AFL Season Wrap Up Port Stephens Power AFL Club recently held their Junior Presentation Day at the Great Aussie Bush Camp near Tea Gardens.
By Julie McKIMM
PORT Stephens Power AFL Club recently held their Junior Presentation Day at the Great Aussie Bush Camp near Tea Gardens. The day was attended by over 60 families; this included members from Singleton who were part of the joint venture U17 team this season. Prior to the official presentations families enjoyed adventure activities around the camp. The Giant Swing and Flying Fox helped some players overcome their fears and take the plunge to participate. The official presentation started with the Auskickers receiving their playing medallions, then presentations took place for the U9s, U11s, U13s and U17s teams. President Mr Mark Edgar said to News of the Area, โI would like to take the opportunity to thank all of the coaches, assistant coaches, and team managers for a wonderful season growing and guiding their teams this year.โ โGreat efforts were made by all of our parents and caregivers, who bring their kids to training and matches, cut up the oranges and wave the flags, a huge thank you.โ โFinally, to our hard working committee who work tirelessly behind the scenes, without you, Game Day would not happen, so thanks for all your support this year.โ At their own presentation night, the womenโs team also celebrated their season. Ms Kayla Pennicott from the Senior Womenโs team was named the Best and Fairest for the season. Joint runner-up winners were MS Gabrielle Fitzsimmons and Ms Michaela Simeonova. The Coachโs Award went to Ms Josie Johnson who has been instrumental in building
up the team for their first two seasons in the competition. Most Improved Player was Ms Shakira Jobson, with Ms Cheyenne Neu winning the Golden Boot for being the leading goal kicker of the season. Other Club based awards included: Best and Fairest: U11s Owen Edgar, U13s Joshua Bohan, U17s Jesse Bates. Coachโs award: U11s David Gorton, U13s Arrowyn Carter, U17s Josh Browning. Most Improved: U11s Jackson Connolly,
U13s Thomas Wylie, U17s Cameron Saunders. Regional Team Player Awards: U9s Jake Marsh, U11s Nash Cameron, U13s Seth Morrissey. Club Person: Paul Gorton. Volunteers: Zac Ruhl, Kayla Merritt. First Year Umpires and Milestone Awards to Dominic Boatswain, Jackson Connolly, Owen Edgar, Rhys Hay, Cooper Higgins, Madison Jewell, Ryley Jewell, Fletcher Sinclair, Toby Sinclair, Jacob Radcliffe, Jaydn Healy, and Josh Browning. With a short break, pre-season training will be starting over the coming months and the Club hopes to continue to build its numbers for a competitive 2020 season. Junior registrations are currently open, with Senior Registrations opening around November. For more information on the Club call Club Secretary on 0412 322 056.

Before parents commence Court proceedings, they generally need to first attempt Family Dispute Resolution (โFDRโ). There are some circumstances in which parents can proceed without attempting FDR, such as circumstances of urgency. The Federal Circuit Court in Newcastle recently considered an application of a father to commence proceedings for the return of an infant child, without attempting FDR. The father argued that the matter was urgent, because it was important that the child return and spend regular time with him to establish a strong bond. In reaching her decision the judge clearly stated that โit is preferable that the parents of children make
their own arrangements for their children. They know their children; they know their different personalities, attachments and viewsโฆ It is better for parents if they can stay out of [court].โ The judge acknowledged that not all matters can stay out of Court, and sometimes there are issues which require Court intervention. However in these circumstances, the judge was not prepared to allow the father to commence proceedings without attempting FDR. This is an example of the Court encouraging parents to take control of arrangements for their own child, before rushing to hand the reins to a judge โ someone who does not know the child and their individual idiosyncrasies.

Hearing Check a Priority
By Gordon GRAINGER
Progress Association Report for the Area
q Jeoff Harry and his wife Lexie Harry. Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer said support for this public health awareness campaign aligned with the councilโs Ageing Strategy that aims to improve life for older people living in the local area. The council has already hosted a series of information sessions about hearing loss and will be distributing resources to help inform residents about addressing hearing loss. โWeโre proud many older Australians choose to live in Port Stephens and itโs our responsibility to continue to improve the livability of the local area and support the health of local residents,โ he said.

โBeing able to hear and communicate with friends and family is very important. I urge people to look after their hearing and seek advice if they have any concerns,โ said Mayor Ryan Palmer. Kate Washington MP, who was the first local member to get behind the campaign, recently attended a special event at the Hawks Nest Bridge Club with Associate Professor Kelvin Kong to highlight the importance of hearing health. She said, โThis research highlights why we should not be complacent with our hearing health. Being part of the conversation is crucial for community and family life and good hearing gives us the confidence to connect with people.โ โTaking a hearing test could be the first step towards improving your quality of life,โ said Kate Washington MP. Health experts want to reach out to the 56 per cent of residents in Port Stephens who believe hearing loss is unavoidable as we get older. Associate Professor Kelvin Kong, Consultant Ear Nose and Throat Surgeon and Worimi man, said more
people were expected to develop hearing loss as the population ages, but it wasnโt an inevitable part of ageing. โMany older people ignore their hearing loss or simply resign themselves to slowly going deaf, but this doesnโt have to be the case,โ he said. โThe ability to hear properly connects us to our friends and family, keeping us switched on. If you notice any deterioration in you or your loved onesโ hearing, speak to a health professional about treatment options,โ said Associate Professor Kelvin Kong. In response to local hearing loss figures, Port Stephens residents will become the worldโs first to benefit from a new online check to show if their hearing aids are enough. The Hearing Aid Check (available at www. hearingaidcheck.com/ au) is simple, free and can be completed on a home computer, tablet or mobile phone. Each user receives personalised results and recommendations, including if they should speak to a health professional about their hearing.
THE Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Progress Association met on Monday 9 September and was addressed by Daniel Holmes, representing Meals on Wheels (MOW). He gave an excellent presentation on MOW activities which now has over 200 clients, 80 volunteers, with 5 part time paid staff. They provide over 18,000 meals a year and operate on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, some staff booking in at 2:30 am. Recipients of meals are welcome and need to be registered with MyAgedCare (www.myagedcare.gov.au) or calling 49970800. Daniel advised they would be remaining at the Hawks Nest Community Centre for some years, however, do require a larger facility. Council is endeavouring to locate suitable premises and MOW is seeking funding from Govternment Grants, community support groups and self- funding. Reports were received from the following community groups. ยท The Myall Koala & Environment Group have advised that the koala survey held last year was successful and that another will be conducted this November. Results will include a community presentation on 7 November. They will have a stall at the River Festival and giving away hundreds of koala food trees. ยท The Progress Association will have a stall at the River Festival and plan to ask some groups to join with us, to provide the community with some detail on their activities. Invitations will be issued shortly. ยท The naming of the public wharves has been submitted to Council, which is preparing an Engagement Strategy for public endorsement and approval by the State Naming Board. The names submitted by many within the community are the โSalamanderโ (Sally) the โAbilityโ (Abby), both droghers using the wharves early 1900โs and the โYalinbahโ (Yally) which took goods, passengers and mail throughout the Port and Lakes. ยท The Myall River Action Group meeting with the Shadow politicians was recently reported in News Of The Area (Nota). The Group is waiting on confirmation from State members for a similar discussion which will also include a request for a final announcement of the upgrade to the Police Station and manning levels. ยท The proposed public car park in Myall Street is becoming an increasing necessity and the Reference Group was shown a proposed plan which does not include toilet facilities. We disagree and should any of the readers agree with us, let the planners know. Council have been asked to register the need for the completion of the footpath along Marine Drive. Next meeting will be held at the Uniting Church Hall, Tea Gardens on Monday 14 October 7pm. All welcome.

PORT Stephens residents are being urged to get their hearing tested and prioritise hearing health after 81 percent of people said hearing loss could affect relationships with friends and family. Thatโs according to a recent study which also revealed only four in 10 residents have had a hearing test in the last two years. This is despite 78 percent of respondents recognising that hearing loss has a significant impact on the lives of those with the condition, including feelings of isolation, loss of confidence and stress. The findings have spurred Port Stephens Council, Kate Washington MP, health experts and local community groups - such as Lions Clubs, Probus Clubs and Menโs Sheds to join forces for a public health awareness campaign. Called โImplant Yourself Back Into Lifeโ, the campaign aims to make Port Stephens a world leader in helping older adults benefit from better hearing, which may help keep the mind sharp and may help people have stronger social interactions. Health experts and community leaders have thrown their weight behind the campaign by Cochlear and the SCIC Cochlear Implant Program a Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children (RIDBC) service to help reduce the impact of hearing loss; a condition affecting half of all adults in Port Stephens.

Joanna's journey from the moment the idea was sparked to the triumphant completion at Santa Monica Pier in LA, and covers just about everything in between. There was some sex, drugs, cooperative accommodation, compromising situations, beautiful encounters, struggles, and of course, more than a little music. The Great Song Cycle is filled with humor, wonder and joy and is a beautifully narrated story of adventure, a journey of discovery, and above all a celebration of the artist's spirit. Joannaโs Australian Cycle marks the September publication of The Great Song Cycle: Portland to Los Angeles On Two Wheels and a Song.

JOANNA Wallfisch is about to ride through Hawks Nest
on 29 September, on one stage of her epic Maroochydore to Mona, Hobart Cycle Journey. Joanna is a critically acclaimed singersongwriter and multi-instrumentalist, whose musical style combines her classical routes with her love of jazz, artsong, folk and poetry of all kinds. She is based in Los Angeles, where she works for the Urban Voices Project which brings music education and choir to the Skid Row community. Her new album was inspired by her West Coast USA cycling journey and is called, 'Far Away from Any Place Called Home'. This isnโt the first time this musician has packed up her push bike with instruments and hit the road. In 2016, Joanna Wallfisch felt like she had hit an 'artistic and emotional impasse'. Her answer was to hit the road and she embarked on a solo concert tour of the West Coast of the USA; by bicycle. Over the course of the nearly 2000km's she performed solo shows between Portland and Los Angeles carrying her musical instruments, camping gear, and everything else she needed on her bike. Joanna wrote the story of her adventure. The Great Song Cycle follows

WHAT an absolutely fabulous weekend all members from the Tea Gardens Country Club Fishing Club had during the 13 - 15 September. Club Publicity Manager, Luke Boyd said, โThe BBQ was just as enjoyable for the members and guests during the fish weighin and I also have to mention the great start to the new season with a few members weighing huge fish of many species.โ Junior, Will Markham, caught a massive bream on his new season outing to take the lead for the Biggest Species for the year with a 1.15kg bream that may last the whole season unbeaten. The ladies division had some very enthusiastic anglers showing off their weekend catches in great style. Whiting, Bream and Ludrick dominated the scales for all the anglers on Sunday at the weekend weigh-in. GOL100 The menโs division was, as history tells, hotly contested with a father and son angling for the outing win. Only one clue at who they are ,but you better be thrift to beat these two with their mixed bags of big fish. Big Drummer, big Luderick and big

By The JAFFA IN the last 10 days Tea Gardens Bowling Club has had the pleasure of hosting two visiting Bowling Clubs. The Belmont โSportiesโ Travelling Bowlers were first to arrive and enjoy the Tea Gardens hospitality and our wonderful bowling facilities. Tea Gardens competed with them for the Carolyn Heaney Memorial Trophy, a beautiful award to honour Carolyn who had been an avid supporter and player for Belmont in years past. A tally of the cards saw Tea Gardens take the trophy for the first time edging out Belmont 83 to 74. The individual winners on +11 were; Jean Glover, Kevin Barbie and Barry Goode. Belmont President, Bruce Gill presented the trophy to Frank Dunn on behalf of Tea Gardens. On Friday 20 September, the Lake Cathie bowlers arrived and participated in a Pairs competition with Tea Gardens. Bowls was the winner on the day and although no scores were announced about 50 players enjoyed the contest.

If my experience is anything to go by, Lake Cathie gave us a bit of a โtouch-upโ. The scheduled โKneelersโ v โGrippersโ contest was moved to Saturday 21 September and it was pleasing to see the Lake Cathie contingent stay over and compete. The competition was set up to support the โStart in Life Foundationโ to provide funds to meet the needs of disadvantaged school children in our area. The Fund provides necessary text books, uniforms and other necessities for children needing assistance to stay at school and receive an education to set them up in life. The day raised $1,030 from the bowlers and the Tea Gardens Country Club added another $500 in support. It is a matter of record that the โGrippersโ won the trophy (again). The individual winners on the day were; John Young, Terry Munright and Ross Barry. The all โgirl team of Jeannette Emmett, Lynda Richards and Deyonne Page were a close second.
q Winners of the Start in Life Foundation Charity Day, John Young, Terry Munright and Ross Barry.
