New Guinea. After just three weeks of leave, Jack was stationed again in NSW, before being deployed to Borneo. Thora said Jack’s distinguished service record has one very small blemish. “He went AWOL when he was stationed at Goulburn, and walked 13 miles to see me,” Thora told News Of The Area. “His pay was docked, but it was worth it to spend the afternoon

His brother Peter also served in WWII, which left their parents to run the business alone, under “immense pressure and extreme difficulties”. “It is impossible to appreciate the amount of work they had to do in our absence,” Jack said. “They must have

troops landing at Gallipoli in 1915. It was also a time of sad reflection. Barry Whiteman from the RSL Sub branch noted, “We’ve lost 13 veterans in the past 12 months so these ceremonies are very important to remember them.” Mr Whiteman went on to add, “So let us mourn with pride, but let us also remember with equal pride those who served and still live.” Women in wartime were remembered as too was a dedication from Kemal Ataturk, Commander of the Turkish 19th Division during the Gallipoli campaign. Guest speaker Sheran Silva from the Williamtown Air Force Base gave a moving speech. “Respect, honour, comradeship and service are just some of the words which come to mind,” Sheran said. “This great nation has given me a number of opportunities for which I am grateful, therefore I wanted to give something back, ultimately driving my decision to serve my country and join the Australian military.” “It is the spirit of the ANZACs which continues to flow through all Australians, courage, good humour, and mateship.”
The RSL’s Barry Whitman responded. “We’re a very lucky country when we have people of your calibre serving.” The Myall Melodians
added their beautiful voices to the commemorations. The official ceremony ended with the traditional laying of the wreaths.

If a member of a superannuation fund dies (the deceased) there are a number of elements that determine how their superannuation death benefit will be paid. These include the terms of the fund’s trust deed, applicable trust laws, the Superannuation Industry Supervision Act 1993 and Regulations (SIS) and the Income Tax Assessment Act. SIS Regulation 6.22 provides that the trustee can pay a death benefit to any dependant of the deceased or to their Legal Personal Representative (LPR). The class of dependants includes:
• the deceased’s spouse (including de facto spouse or same-sex spouse)
• the deceased’s children (and children of the deceased’s spouse if their spouse is living at the
deceased’s date of death)
• people who are actually financially dependent on the deceased and in an interdependency relationship with them at the deceased’s death. If it is paid to the LPR it will form part of the deceased’s estate and be distributed in accordance with the deceased’s Will.
If you have a blended family or problematic relationship, there is good reason to consider if you need to make a valid Binding Death Benefit Nomination (BDBN) or provide information under the fund’s deed to the trustee to influence the trustee’s decision on how your death benefit will be distributed. Our experienced Family Lawyers and Succession Lawyers can help you if this is an issue for you.

ARTHUR and Juin Battle recently celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary, surrounded by their family and friends in Bulahdelah. Reflecting on 60 years of marriage, Juin revealed the secret behind their very happy union. “It’s simply lots of love and understanding, and sticking together through all the ups and downs,” she said. Juin first laid eyes on Arthur in a café in Manilla in 1956, when she was just 16-years old. “Some mutual friends introduced us,” Juin said. “My first thoughts were that he was tall, handsome and someone I could see myself sharing a lot of years with.” Love blossomed, and Arthur proposed very traditionally, a short time later. “He got down on bended knee and asked if I would marry him, of course I said yes,” Juin said. “He asked my parents for permission and they had no problems, they were very happy.” Arthur and Juin were married on 13 April 1957 at the Methodist Church in Manilla. Juin’s sister Nola Coote was bridesmaid and Arthur’s brother Hiram Battle stood beside him as best man. Juin said the reception at Manilla’s Namoi Park consisted of, “sandwiches, a cake, one box of beer and a single bottle of port”. The couple spent
two years travelling while Arthur worked as a timber cutter, and lived in an “auto tent”, which Juin describes as a “small, mobile canvas home”. Moving to Bulahdelah in 1965 to care for Arthur’s elderly father, they took up residence on a property in Rosenthal. Locally, Arthur worked for Great Lakes Shire, a position he held until he retired 25 years later. Reflecting on many happy memories, Juin said sharing their lives with their three children, Wayne, Angela and Graham, was one of the highlights. “We are also very lucky to have 12 grandchildren and six great grandchildren who we love and adore,” she said. Although Arthur now resides at Great Lakes Nursing Home, Juin travels from the family home every day to be with him. “We have always done everything together, and have always been together,” Juin said.

it goes through the roof.” The books were packed and shelves pulled down last week in preparation for the move, marking the end of an era. According to past librarian Diane Burns, the service began operating from Bulahdelah Central School in 1981. “There was a need for a community library, as we didn’t have anywhere that books could be borrowed from,” Mrs Burns said.
“A grant application was submitted to Great Lakes Council by Ian Aird, the Headmaster at the time, and library assistant Lyn Bonney, to purchase books for the community.” Mrs Burns said with Council’s support, a community section in the school library was established, and was open for two hours each Wednesday afternoon. q A New Chapter: Bulahdelah Library will operate from the Rural Transaction Centre from 1 May. Farrell also played a significant role in operating the community library from the school. Mrs Burns said the service moved to the CWA rooms in Wade Park in 1990, as a larger space was needed to house the expanding collection of books. Council provided ongoing support for the library, which reached a 25-year milestone. “Local volunteers have been vital in achieving this, ably overseen by Loraine

Loraine told News Of The Area, there have been many changes over the years. “We had no computers when we first opened,” she said. “We also expanded the loans available to include large print books, magazines, audio books, CDs and DVDs.” Loraine said usage had declined over the past six
years. “School children are using it less frequently as a point of reference, because they now use their laptops and iPad’s,” she said. “It’s still an important service, and I hope once moved, the community will continue to use it.” The library service is expected to recommence on 1 May from the Rural Transaction Centre.

BULAHDELAH Men’s Shed members have been busy, with another batch of News Of The Area newsstands completed and ready to hit the streets. The men have now made more than 80 of the modern, high-quality stands, to keep up with the growing circulation of the three News Of The Area papers. Shed Member John Renfrew, said they have “certainly enjoyed making them”. “We gained a lot of experience, especially with a number of new tools that we used to build them,” he said. “We lost sleep over it a few times, but the main thing about it is that we were up here doing it together.” And a team effort it was, with all shed members having “a hand in each component of the stands”. Max Burrows and John Renfrew lead the construction and Peter Millen and Barry Holm were the chief painters. Neville Wing and Max
took on the role of mentors, and all other members pitched in to help with each stage. The men constructed their first newsstand more than 18 months ago, and have since modified the original design many times. John said the project allowed them to work together in a supportive and social environment. “It has been a good thing to work on, we really did enjoy it, and it is also good to be able to support men’s health in this way,” he said. With the latest set of newsstands completed, John said their attention would now be focused on other activities. “We’ll still be working on beehives, and we will work on other projects to help the community,” he said. “We also have card nights
twice a week, it’s a small shed, but we do get a big

NEW South Wales children have just gone back to school after what could only be described as a bumper Easter Holiday season in the Myall. Hundreds of tourists flocked to the towns of Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest taking advantage of the perfect autumn sunshine, the beach and river. Local businesses reported bumper sales while many community groups held garage sales and trash and treasure market stalls to take advantage of the tourist dollar. The Myall Koala and
Environment Group set up a stall and raffle outside Hugo’s Newsagency in Hawks Nest to raise funds for a number of projects. “We’re trying to get more done down at the Singing bridge where the Koalas cross because we’ve lost so many in the last few years,” Jill Madden told News Of The Area. “We’ve got the Koala sign going, so now we’re looking at doing some writing on the road, possibly a Koala shape and also an interactive sign for the other side of the road,” ‘’We’ve also got a plan to do a walk around the town, it would be great for tourists

and for the locals.’’ At the Grange Village, local residents held their annual Trash and Treasure but with a twist this year. A special Charity stall was set up to raise money for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. The Grange’s Craft Group
was also busy selling raffle tickets for three Mother’s Day Gift hampers. “Ladies from our craft group have done all the embroidery and made the blankets,” Grange resident Lynda Curran said. “It took three months
because it’s all hand done.” The raffle will be drawn on Saturday 6 May at the Craft Group’s bi-monthly morning tea. All proceeds will go to the Tea Gardens Primary School Breakfast Club.

$275,000 is raised annually from the Tea Gardens moorings. In response, Mr Gordon Grainger of the Myall River Action Group has once again written to the Department of Industry citing six issues at odds with the Government’s latest stand. Of most concern, is the fact that sand migration has now reached critical phase. ‘The Gut’ has not been dredged since 1961. “To pass the cost to[MidCoast] Council is nothing short of an abrogation of responsibility and questions the ethics and morality of both Lands and the responsible Government representatives,’’ Mr Grainger said. ”Council has responded they have no funds available, particularly
following the recent Council amalgamation.” “The “Rescuing our Waterways” program, whilst applicable to navigation channels is questionable when referred to private moorings and in any event, Council has rejected the 50:50 funding arrangement.” “The final question is what can these boat owners do? There are no new mooring areas available within the Tea Gardens/ Hawks Nest waterway.” The Myall River Action Group believes the handling of ‘The Gut’ dredging issue has ramifications for estuaries throughout New South Wales. State MPs Kate Washington and Stephen Bromhead have both questioned the Department of Industry’s decision.
Dredging Disappointment THE ongoing battle to fund the dredging of the Myall River area known as “The Gut” continues, following the latest response from the NSW Department of Industry, Lands and Forestry. In a letter just received by the Myall River Action Group, Alison Stone, Deputy Director General of the Department of Industry is sticking to the Government line that it is not responsible for dredging ‘The Gut’. Ms Stone, writing on behalf of the Minister for Lands Paul Toole, said while mooring fees were paid to the Department of Lands and the Roads and Maritime Services, the mooring charges went towards administration and management costs.

AN SOS went out from volunteers at the annual Easter koala stall in Hawks Nest when they ran out of cakes to sell. Demand for the homebaked cakes was so great that the Myall Koala and Environment Group sold out within the first hour and had to make urgent calls to members and friends to bring more. The sun, locals and visitors came out to support the koala stall in Hawks Nest on Easter Saturday. As well as the cakes, the

Funding For A Stronger Future Applications for the second round of the Stronger Communities funding open on 1 May, with $500,000 up for grabs across the MidCoast region.
By John SAHYOUN
APPLICATIONS for the second round of the Stronger Communities funding open on 1 May, with $500,000 up for grabs across the MidCoast region. Incorporated notfor-profit community organisations can apply for grants of up to $50,000 to improve services or facilities. This could include upgrading existing facilities, the introduction of new community services,
or funding for sporting infrastructure or equipment. To assist with the application process, MidCoast Council Community Development Coordinator Lyndie Hepple, led a workshop in Tea Gardens last week. Lyndie said in the first round of funding allocated in November last year, 17 community projects were selected from 76 applications across the region. The successful projects ranged from boatsheds and

community gardens, to hall refurbishments and exercise trails. During the workshop, Lyndie stressed the need for applications to address all criteria points to be considered. Similar sessions have been held in Taree, Forster and Gloucester. “The workshops have been generating quite a bit of interest with about 20 people at each,” Lyndie told News Of The Area. “By the reaction, I can see there has been a great response to the collaboration, which has allowed people to get a better understanding of the process.” The Stronger Communities Funds come from a one-off allocation to merged councils, made available through the NSW Government’s ’Fit For the Future’ reform program. Applications for the final round of funding close on 9 June, 2017. “Get them in as early as possible, and don’t leave it to the last few days,” Lyndie said. Further information is available on Council’s website. For general enquiries, Lyndie Hepple can be contact on 6591 7490 or email community@midcoast.nsw. gov.au.
Rate Rise On The Way
MIDCOAST residents will be hit with a rate hike from 1 July, if an application for a special rate variation (SRV) is approved. After legislation was passed in NSW Parliament earlier this month, Council has been given the goahead to submit its SRV application. If approved, the average increase per year will be $59 in the Manning region, $64 in the Great

Lakes region, and $77 in the Gloucester region. The rate increase is earmarked to address the $180 million maintenance backlog. A proposal for an increase of five percent, (including the rate peg), each year over a four-year period, along with the harmonisation of the environmental rate at six percent across the MidCoast local government area, was outlined during community
consultation in November last year. To sweeten the deal, Council proposed freezing the waste levy for three years, providing a saving of $120. According to Council, the condition of roads and bridges has been highlighted by the local community as their highest priority. “Being given the green light to proceed with the SRV application is a positive step forward and one that is

Council said the extensive asset backlog for roads and bridges, along with underfunding of depreciation for roads and bridges by $5million annually, means the backlog of works will continue to increase, unless it is addressed. “Since the merger, we have identified ongoing savings far exceeding the KPMG merger business case scenario. By committing these merger savings to our roads and bridges, along with additional merger funding through the Stronger
Communities – Major Projects Fund, a $30million Roadcare Program has been developed”, Mr Handford said. “While this is a great result for a newly merged Council, it will not address depreciation or the significant backlog, which is where the SRV will be critical in making a positive difference.” To find out more about the SRV proposal, visit www.midcoast.nsw.gov.au/ SRV.

Rate Rise, Residents Have Their Say
Kevin Carter, Bulahdelah.
David Mort, Bulahdelah.
The current rate rise is only the CPI. It is standard and expected. However, it could become unfair on former Great Lakes residents who are paying the highest rates in the MidCoast area. I do believe we need to embrace the rises as best we can, as long as the money goes towards improved services and infrastructure. The rate rises need to be reasonable and honest. If we expect improved services, we should expect a rate rise.
When you’re looking at people who buy property, any rate increase could affect their decision to buy here. Any increase in rates should be used to improve our infrastructure, and the rates should be evened out across the whole council area.

I am against a rate rise. I feel our rates are high enough at the moment, considering what we actually get for our rates. We do need a lot of resources in this area, but I am not sure that a rate rise will benefit our area.
We really need to see more for our rate money than we are getting at the moment, so hopefully things will improve. We will pay more, so we will expect more.
Helping Hand With Homework The thought of staying after school to do homework is the last thing on many young people’s minds.
THE thought of staying after school to do homework is the last thing on many young people’s minds. But a group of the region’s students are seeing the benefits, after attending the homework club at Bulahdelah Central School. The program is run by mathematics teacher Walter Prowse, who said the aim is to assist students improve their learning outcomes. “Some kids need a little bit of extra support, and there is a big reluctance for them to do that sort of thing at lunch times because they like to socialise,” Mr Prowse said. “By staying after school, they can get help with their homework and develop a bit more of an appreciation for academics.” Mr Prowse told News Of The Area, the homework club, which began earlier this year, has already had many positive flow on effects. “It builds the student’s confidence which improves their participation in their
classes,” he said. “Having different year groups together also improves engagement with their learning, as they can see the link between what they are doing and the work they will do in later years.” For Year 8 student Logan Davidson, attending the club eliminates the frustrations of taking homework home. “It can be difficult when you are doing it at home and get stuck on a question,” he said. “By getting help at school, it saves heaps of time and makes it easier to understand.” The homework club runs one afternoon each week and caters for all subjects and learning abilities. “Students are keen to practise maths, but there’s also those who need help with English or history, and some of the primary with spelling,” Mr Prowse said. Other staff, including English teacher Ms Ros Caro and Scientist Mr Tim Cooper, also regularly lend a helping hand to assist at the club.
Jeff Carryer, Bulahdelah.
Irene Worth, Bulahdelah. Nobody wants to pay more rates. If there is a rate rise, so long as we don’t suffer and everybody benefits. It needs to be fair across the council area, not just for a few areas.
Often the rates here are as high as a million-dollar place in Sydney. The proposed rise may not seem much, but when you combine it with water rates, a lot of properties are looking at three grand per year now, about $60 per week, it may be a bit of a struggle for pensioners. Any money from a rate rise needs to go into our roads, facilities and bridges.

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Send your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb. Dear Jasminda,
Help! A senior work colleague of mine is soiling the workplace, from discarded staples on the floor to crumbs under the keyboard, science experiments in the kitchen to over-shooting the waste paper basket, her petulant hoarding of office stationery to her whistling nose breathing… it just goes on and on! How do I broach her grotty ways with her without ending up wrapped in bubble wrap on the bottom of the ocean? Ms. PE, Corlette
Dear Ms. PF, WHEN you said “soiling the workplace”, at first I thought we were dealing with incontinence issues. I was more than a little relieved that this senior was not relieving herself in a very literal sense, marking her territory, if you will, as some senior staff like to do when confronted with a new kid on the block. I envisage that your workplace is a bit like The Hunger Games. You are the delightful Katniss Everdeen, with cute plaits and olive skin, and your senior colleague is the female equivalent of President Snow, plotting each day with new levels of filth and depravity to test your limits. If she has been in the workplace for many years, you’ll never get rid of her. Her sense of entitlement is not based on merit, but on longevity. Like a long-term partner, she also feels very comfortable in her own skin. So comfortable, in fact, that I fear the keyboard crumbs and whistling nose breathing are just the start of more sinister vices – gouging the butter container instead of gently scraping, coffee granules in the sugar, an empty toilet roll on the holder, soup slurping and tooth grinding. Oh, the horrors these actions bring to the more obsessive and compulsive among us. Perhaps you need to demarcate your workspace. Or print out a cleanliness affirmation and stick it in a prominent place. Something like: “I shall tolerate no uncleanliness in body, clothes, habitation or thought” ought to do it. If her grotty ways continue, arm yourself with an arsenal of cleaning products and hunt her down, Katniss style. Carpe diem, Jasminda
A Lesson in Safety By Daniel SAHYOUN WITH children returning to school this week, it also means that school zone speed limits are back in force. Fines and demerit points apply if you are caught exceeding the 40km/h school zone limit, which operates

Statistics Don’t Stack Up Dear News Of The Area,
AMAZING! An Act passed in May 2016 prevented merged Councils from accessing a rate increase. Then, a couple of weeks ago (31/3/2017), according to Len Roberts, an Easter Bunny in the form of Paul Green from the Christian Democrats submitted an amendment exempting Mid Coast Council (MCC) from this Act, thus allowing Mid Coast Council to seek a rate increase. One wonders what Paul Green, who resides
on the South Coast, has to do with the Mid North Coast. I requested clarification from Paul Green and he indicated that he was approached by MCC and, in view of the survey that showed that 75% of ratepayers and renters would be able to afford the rate increase. Mind you, the 75% was made up of 20% who would be able to afford it and 55% who said they would be “inconvenienced” by the rate increase. I would have interpreted inconvenienced as a burden. However, they do plan to freeze the waste levy for three years, saving ratepayers $120. Wow! According to Mr Len Roberts (Point of View), survey after survey showed support for a rate increase. Well, I must have missed something in all this excitement. I do not recall the results of the MCC survey being published. I had to find these

The School Zone Safety campaign is supported by school staff, bus companies and local police. Bulahdelah Deputy Principal Deb Gilbert, said to improve school zone safety, a ‘load and go’ bus system has recently been implemented at the school. “The idea is that the students are all in one location, so it is easier to
supervise them,” she said. “The buses now come in the order they arrive, so they are not trying to navigate around each other on the roads, which also improves the flow of traffic around the school.” Mrs Gilbert said other safety measures in place include flashing lights, which give drivers extra warning to slow down, and designated walkways. Signs explaining the school zone traffic rules are also displayed. “While most drivers should know the rules, if you’re unsure, we encourage you to either jump online to the Roads and Maritime Services website, contact the school or visit Service NSW to find out more,” Chris said.

Sunrise Service ON a glorious Easter Sunday morning about 100 people gathered at Hawks Nest beach to celebrate the Risen Christ. Holiday makers joined local Christians for a service of Holy Communion as the sun rose over the ocean. Preaching on the theme “He is not here, He is risen” Rev Denis Kirkaldy reminded
people of the question of the angels at the tomb: “Why do you seek the living among the dead?” and encouraged them to walk daily with the risen saviour. This service continues a tradition of dawn services at Easter which St Andrews Tea Gardens has been holding for 40 years.

Turkey Alert
By Margie TIERNEY LOOK closely at the picture taken in the Hawks Nest Newsagency last week. Can you see anything amiss in the bait and tackle section? Sitting next to the bait freezer is a Bush Turkey who came a-callin’ and refused to leave. Now here’s a few facts you may not have known about the humble Bush Turkey or Brush Turkey. The Brush Turkey is the most ancient member of a family that dates back 30 million years and includes
chickens, quails and peacocks. The Brush Turkey also became a food staple through the Great Depression with the Country Women’s Association even publishing recipes for brush turkey egg omelettes. Today, however, the Brush Turkey is mostly regarded as a pest, invading gardens from far North Queensland to south of Sydney. Newsagency owner Hugo Elstermann wasn’t too impressed either when the curious Brush Turkey managed to make its way through the plastic strips on his store front door just on closing time.
Hawks Nest locals are well aware that Hugo puts in a long day, opening his doors at sun up and not closing until sundown. So it was a toss up who was the most annoyed. The Brush Turkey who managed to evade capture, leaping from one end of the shop to the other. Or Hugo who just wanted to catch the bird and go home. Of course Hugo eventually won out. The Brush Turkey finally tired of the chase and gave up, last seen hopping down the street unscathed ready for its next adventure.

Mudcrabs First Match and Win
AFTER Rounds 1 and 2 of the Lower Mid North Coast Rugby Competition being washed out, the Myall Coast Mudcrabs overcame a lack of numbers and fielded a full side in their first win 14-7 of the 2017 Season against Gloucester Cockies played at Gloucester last Saturday. The Muddies team displayed skill and talent from a number of new young players in the backline and played beyond their years in the first half taking a 14-0 lead into the half-time break with two well contrived tries scored by James Bowden and Blake Gibson, both being converted by Captain, Ashley Rushby. In the second half, Gloucester forged on to achieve a try and conversion bringing the score to 14-7 favouring the Muddies with this being the final score with the match having to be abandoned in the final 10 minutes due to a serious
injury suffered by a Gloucester player which necessitated him being transported to the John Hunter Hospital via helicopter. Best on the park for the Muddies were in the forwards, Ashley Rushby ably supported by Chris (Turtle) Sando, James (Farm Boy) Farmer and Jackson Page whilst in the backs, new player Riley Hunter was outstanding in his first game for the club with others including Danny Lawrence, Blake Gibson, Karl Nicol and James Bowden playing hard and giving their best to the side. New players are always welcome – training held every Wednesday, Myall Park commencing at 6.00pm. A “catch up” match will be played against Old Bar this Friday evening at the above oval with kickoff at 6.45pm so come along and support your local Rugby side under the lights.

Eureka Moment for Mixed Bowls BOWLING
Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club By The JAFFA 12 April No Wednesday Bowls was played today due to constant rain, however the Tea Gardens Mid-Week Pennant team played “out west” at Wallsend. Playing on grass was always going to be difficult for the team especially on the dead-slow surfaces they have encountered when away from home. Wallsend was no exception and the side struggled to make an impact. The Wallsend side clinched the match 72-34. Not good! 19 April The format was threebowl Triples played over 16 ends with 30 bowlers playing. The winners were decided on a countback. They were Geoff Page, Noel Jackson and Greg Smith. Runners-up were Brian McPhie, David Perry and Gary Melrose. The Wednesday bowlers made way for the Mid-Week
Pennant side who were taking on the Mayfield West side in Round 9 of the competition. With some key players missing, the task was always going to be tough and such was the case, but there was one shining light in the match. The Merv Mills combination managed a close win 23-22. The remaining teams fell afoul of “sleeping sickness” at about the 14th end. One team lost 13 shots in 3 ends after leading to the 14th. Ouch! 21 April What a great day for Fabulous Friday Open Jackpot Pairs today. Sixteen players turned out, including three ladies, to enjoy a wonderful afternoon of bowls. The winners were decided by the team having the highest winning score. The winners were Tony Attard and Tom Parkinson and the runners-up were Col Saillard and Stewart Sturrock. The jackpot was not won and will stand at $160.00 for next week. 22 April Round seven of the Saturday Pennant competition was played today

with two sides enjoying wins. The Mighty Dolphins Grade 3 side took on Lemon Tree Passage and managed a comprehensive win 74-50. One team lost but the remaining two teams enjoyed good wins. The Sean Mearrick Four won 23-18 and the Richard Lee side smashed their opponents 36-11. The Grade 3 side are well into this completion has a great chance of winning their
BOWLING
Section. Grade 5 had a disappointing result, with many substitutions having to be made, no doubt due to the “unofficial” long weekend. There was one positive result with the Leigh Hunt combination scoring a great win 25-17. The remaining two teams could not match it with their opponents and lost heavily. Nelson Bay won 75-48. The Grade 6 side, which
also have a great chance of making the Sectional playoffs, scored a tight win on the grass at Hexham. Two teams narrowly lost their matches. The Ron Webster Four went down 17-19 and the Danny Johnson combination lost 19-20. It was the Doug Naylor team that saved the day. They won 27-16 to see Grade 6 take the match 63-55. 23 April

Pat’s team gained 6 shots on the next end (11-5), but Lorraine’s team regained the lead on the 12th end, the score here 13 to 12. By the 14th end the tides had changed Pat’s team now regaining the lead by 3, the score 16 v 13. The difference was narrowed to 1 on the 16th end. Local By Margie TIERNEY OUR local Police have gone above and beyond to help build positive relations with the younger generation. Sixteen children were given the opportunity through the school holidays to go on a fishing adventure with three officers in blue. Joining forces were Karuah Police Constable Trent Moffat, Senior Constable Brad Smith from Stroud and Senior Constable Dave Coyle from the Tea Gardens station. The youngsters too, came from across the region. Students from Stroud, Karuah and Tea Gardens Public Schools were given the chance to make new friends and learn how to bait a hook and throw a line. “The aim of the day was to build positive connections between the local police and our local students,” Tea Gardens Primary School Principal Mark Clemson told News Of The Area. The children started off the day with a fun-filled drive along Bennetts Beach.

Police Fishing For Community Then it was time for some hands-on fishing advice. Unfortunately the fish had other ideas. Youngster Tyler Rodgers from Tea Gardens Public School caught a decent flathead and one of the support crew managed to land a bream. But it was the case of the one that got away for the police. Luckily, lunch had been pre planned and the three officers cooked up a great barbecue. “It was a very successful day,” Mark said. “We were blessed with the outstanding conditions, sun shining, and the water was just divine.”
