Bitou Bush control success story

THE annual Bitou Bush aerial spraying program is underway, targeting an environmental weed that invades natural coastal ecosystems. The program, a joint collaboration between MidCoast Council and the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), will cover several areas on the coastal strip within the MidCoast region will be treated, from Crowdy Head south to Redhead, from Monday 17 June through to Friday 28 June, weather permitting. The Program follows Best Practice guidelines issued by the NSW Government, and strict safety measures are undertaken, including temporary closure of nearby public areas, while inaccessible areas are sprayed.

The program has had outstanding results in reducing the introducing bitou bush from MidCoast coastal environments over the last ten years, restoring natural

The family law sector in Australia is abuzz with the release of the Australian Law Reform Commission’s (the ALRC) review into the Family Law system. The final report contained 60 recommendations addressing all aspects of the system from property division changes, family violence support and access to the Courts. The second of the ALRC’s recommendations proposes the development of a national framework to guide the sharing of information relating to safety, welfare and wellbeing of families and children. Currently, the State Governments have responsibility for child protection (through Family & Community Services) and policing (relevantly, criminal and apprehended domestic violence issues); and the Commonwealth Government has responsibility for family law.

Many families straddle the two systems. Unfortunately, for those families, information held by the respective government agencies is not easily shared – or at times even known – due to privacy restrictions and complications caused by the interface of state and federal laws, policies and procedures. This results in victims having to retell their (often traumatic) experiences; or very relevant and important information never coming to the attention of subsequent agencies or courts. The ALRC recommends that the National Framework include the legal framework for sharing of information, including relevant federal, state and territory court documents, child protection records and police records. The recommendation is supported by many within the family law sector, including the family law team at Mullane & Lindsay.

OPINION

Strategy to grow the economy is tax plan Dear News Of The Area, ONE of the key pieces of the Federal Coalition Government’s strategy to grow the economy is our tax plan. In the lead-up to the election, the Liberals and Nationals put forward its tax policies to the Australian people, and so did Labor. In the long-term, Labor’s strategy to increase taxes would have actually reduced the amount of revenue the government had available to meet the growing costs of delivering important services and infrastructure. We remember last time this occurred when they couldn’t afford to put vitally important medicines on the pharmaceutical benefits scheme. The Coalition’s plan to reduce taxes aims to reduce the burden on individuals, families and small businesses and incentivise greater investment and

activity, which will in turn help grow our economy. As the economy grows, so does the revenue to investment in services and infrastructure. Next week, we’re putting our entire tax plan to the Parliament. Labor and the Parliament should respect the mandate delivered to the Coalition by the Australian people. The Reserve Bank Governor has also urged the Parliament to pass our tax plan. It’s a plan for tax relief not just now but into the future that will be good measures for the economy, for jobs and confidence. Two significant changes will deliver $158 billion of additional tax relief for hardworking Australians. 1) The Government is more than doubling the low and middle income tax offset from 2018-19. · Taxpayers earning up to $126,000 a year – including teachers, tradies

and nurses – will receive a tax cut. · For a single income family, this means up to $1,080 in your pocket per year. And for families on a dual income, up to $2,160. · More than 10 million

q

taxpayers will benefit, with 4.5 million receiving the full amount. This relief will flow quickly and be available to Australians after tax returns for the 2018-19 year are submitted in 11 weeks’ time. 2) We will deliver longterm structural reform by lowering the 32.5 per cent tax rate to 30 per cent from 1 July 2024. · This will cover all taxpayers earning between $45,000 and $200,000 and will mean that 94 per cent of taxpayers will pay no more than 30 cents in the dollar. · From Budget night,

the instant asset write-off will be increased and expanded. It will be increased from $25,000 to $30,000, and it can be used every time an asset under that amount is purchased. The instant asset writeoff will also be expanded to businesses with a turnover of up to $50 million. This will

Lowest Point for Sightings KOALA sightings in Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest are at their lowest in the last 15 years and they may never recover to the levels of six years ago, according to the Local Environment Group. In his report to the annual meeting of the Myall Koala and Environment Group, secretary Ian Morphett said loss of habitat was the main cause. He said in 2014, the Rural Fire Service introduced the 10-50 Rule allowing trees within 10 metres of buildings in bushfire zones to be removed without approval.

It was estimated that up to 20 per cent of trees were cut down in Hawks Nest alone, including a number of important trees that were established koala homes. There have also been more trees cut down and land totally cleared for new buildings. “This has strongly affected the koala corridor connecting Hawks Nest to the national park,” Mr Morphett said. “Tea Gardens has continued to see new large housing developments reducing the number of wildlife corridors in and out of the town.”

Mr Morphett said these included intensive housing in Palm Lake Resort and the removal of hundreds of swamp mahoganies to create Asset Protection Zones in residential, commercial or industrial areas. He said there have also been additional housing construction in the Grange, earthworks related to Riverside at Tea Gardens and the soon-to-commence North Shearwater development. The Myall Koala & Environment Group is proposing that, in its 30th anniversary year, it embarks on a new era developing a

whole new strategy for koala preservation on the Myall Coast. Mr Morphett said, “We have healthy populations surrounding our towns and our emphasis must be on preserving and enhancing fauna corridors.” Continue reporting koala sighting on the Hotline answering machine at 4997 0878. The Myall Koala & Environment Group held its Annual General Meeting and Quarterly Meeting in June. Sixteen members were present with 19 apologies.

President Jill Madden affirmed that Koala sightings in the twin towns were down and she was also not optimistic they would recover to the levels of less than six years ago. “ The loss of habitat and more fragmented habitat being the main causes, however, we have healthy populations surrounding the towns and our emphasis must be on preserving and enhancing fauna corridors,” Ms Madden said. The annual Easter raffle and stall were very successful and raised funds for further fauna surveys around town and to support habitat rehabilitation. The Group has proposed

a name change for Winda Woppa Reserve to ‘Randle and Pat Pritchard Memorial Reserve’. Jill said this was well supported by other groups in our towns. The Group would continue to monitor any changes or developments to proposals to rezone the land between the Golf Club and the beach. A submission was lodged with MidCoast Council by MKEG objecting to the proposal to double the density of the subdivision at North Shearwater on ecological and site suitability grounds. The koalas painted on the road surface in Kingfisher Avenue will be repainted by MidCoast Council after the recent repaving, hopefully with a more realistic koala shape.

Sugarloaf Point Trip By Garry WORTH

RECENTLY the Myall Coast Historical Society had an excursion to the particularly beautiful and historically significant Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse at Seal Rocks. On a balmy autumn day the two rocky reefs lying offshore within three kilometres of Sugarloaf Point were easily visible despite being only a couple of metres above sea level. At night or under choppy seas, Seal Rock and Little Seal Rock would have been invisible to the Sailors of the 1800’s. Eight ships are reported to have been wrecked on, or around, Sugarloaf Point before the lighthouse was lit. It was designed by New South Wales Colonial Architect, James Barnet and the construction of the lighthouse required building a 460m long jetty used to land

the 1,800 tonnes of supplies and materials required. The light was first lit on 1 December 1875. The light has gone from being kerosene powered to a quartz halogen beam now seven times brighter than the original and the present fully automated light no longer needs the two lighthouse keeper families that used to live on the site. Lunch beside the mirror-like waters of Neranie Bay on the upper Myall Lake was followed by a visit to the Neranie Pioneer Graveyard. On the way home an opportunity was taken to sample the signposted walk around the Bulahdelah Courthouse recently installed by the Bulahdelah Historical Society. A wonderful day was made magic by the sort of weather that can only be described as perfect.

Nominated Triples competition Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club By The JAFFA

19 JUNE: The popular Nominated Triples competition was played today with a good field of 52 bowlers participating. Four teams played Fours with the remaining players playing Triples. The second game brought home the winners. On the grass, Paul Carter, Neil Kibble and Bill Whalen succeeded with +13 and on the synthetic; John Bilby, Ron Green and Brian Emmett on the synthetic also had a +13. The lucky draw went to Kevin McInerney, Peter Campbell, Keith Smith and Ron Webster. Col Saillard won the Myall Bistro voucher. 21 June: Friday Open Pairs has recommenced, now that the Pennant season is over, and hopefully numbers will now build up. 23 June: The Annual General Meeting of the Men’s Bowling Club was held today with all positions on the Management Committee being filled before the meeting. A very positive report from the President Noel Jackson, and the hard work of the outgoing Committee during the year pointed to the Club powering along with a solid increase in membership as well as strong participation in Pennant bowls and Club Competitions. Noel paid tribute to “a great team effort”. We certainly have a Club that is putting in the hard yards to increase our membership and satisfy the needs of our bowlers. MP Not Happy with State Budget Announcement PORT Stephens MP Kate Washington has criticised the latest NSW State Budget stating that “this is a disappointing budget full of disappearing promises.”

By Mitch Lees

MS WASHINGTON pointed to a heavily contested campaign of lavish election commitments that “have failed to be delivered to the region and community”. “The Fingal Bay Link Road received no mention in the Budget’s Infrastructure Statement and the collection tin has been sealed shut with

no funds allocated over the next four years.” “As well as the Link Road the promised $275 million for the Nelson Bay Road duplication wasn’t allocated in the Budget, and only $37 million has been allocated this year leaving Ms Washngton ready to shirtfront the NSW Government on funding prioritisation and expanding timeframes.”

COLOUR-IN COMP

“Unbelievably, the duplication of Nelson Bay Road has been delayed yet again,” said Ms Washington. “Instead of the two year completion date promised by the Premier, it’s likely to take another seven or eight years,” Ms Washington said, “The people of Port Stephens have a right to feel ripped off by this budget.” Treasurer Dominic Perrottet has stated that the Government was “absolutely committed” to its election promises and funding would flow to some of the projects around Port Stephens in the coming years.

Public Meeting about Quarry

By Fred McINERNEY THERE were about 30 people in attendance at the public meeting held last month, some of whom live within 300metres of the site. In my view this meeting was for information only, no decisions made, although some comments were noted. Of the submissions received all 45 were in objection of the project. Of the 45 objections 36 mentioned concerns about water and sediment coming off the site into Yalimbah Creek, and then onto Port Stephen, affecting all manner of things, including flora and fauna, oyster farming, sea life, both sea grass and sea creatures, air quality noise and traffic movements.

Some of these issues would also need to be looked at for the existing quarry and there could be some compliance issues there. The proposed hours of operation for the quarry are 5.00 am start for loading of trucks and associated activities with actual quarry operations beginning at 7.00am. Because of the 45 objections the approval has to go to an independent planning commission and there is also a commonwealth list of compliance rules that have to be dealt with. Prior to any approval there will be another public meeting for community consultation. The company making the application has between 2 and 15 months to respond to conditions demanded by the planning department.
