IN today’s world, it is easy to forget the power of kindness, but doing something as simple as saying ‘Thank you’ can bring a smile to many faces. Bulahdelah Central School Year 12 students put this theory to the test last week, by acknowledging some of the many people who contribute to the community. Armed with baskets filled with freshly baked muffins, the students hit the streets during their recess and lunchtime to deliver the treats, which had a note attached simply saying, “Thank you for being part of our community”. The surprise visits brought instantaneous smiles, which quickly spread throughout the town. “This has made my day,” one community member said.

“Wow, such a lovely thing to do,” another stated. Year 12 student, Kaitlyn Smart said she enjoyed being involved, as kindness is an essential part of small communities. “If you can put a smile on somebody’s face by performing an act of kindness, that smile is going to be contagious,” she said.

“It feels good knowing that you can brighten someone’s day by doing something so simple.” The muffins were baked by Year 12 Hospitality students, who arrived very early to prepare hundreds of the sweet treats ready for delivery. Year 12 Advisor, Ms Wendy Parsons, said due to Year 12’s HSC

NORTH ARM COVE: Quarry Meeting.

No to Quarry FROM Page 1 150 locals from North Arm Cove, Pindimar and Bundabah gathered to voice their concerns about a development application for the quarry now lodged with MidCoast Council by Tattersall and Lander on behalf of developer Phillip Lee. Resident Janine

Reid proposed a motion calling upon Council to reject Development Application 269/2017 due to the damage it could do to both the surrounding natural environment and the quality of life in nearby villages. The motion was seconded by CEO of the Aboriginal Land Council Len Roberts and passed unanimously. Local MP Kate Washington lent her

support to the cause. “It’s clear that the development proposal is of great concern to many residents,” Ms Washington told News Of The Area. “The main concerns were that the proposed quarry presents a significant risk to the environment whilst also posing a significant threat to the peaceful enjoyment of nearby properties.” “Neither of these

potential threats are adequately addressed in the development application.” Ms Washington added, “Given the applicant is already currently embroiled in Land and Environment Court proceedings for alleged non-compliance with existing environmental protections, I urged the applicant’s representative to withdraw the development application and fix up the mess that

has already been made before pursuing more approvals.” The DA proposes the quarrying of 25,000 cubic metres of rock a year for an indefinite time. The quarry would also be able to operate on a daily basis. Another development project for the site remains with the Land and Environment Court until further hearings in late September.

Misek v McBride [2017] NSWSC 406 is a recent decision of the Supreme Court of NSW and a renewed warning to think carefully before allowing Attorneys to gift money to themselves.

In that case, a widow died leaving a daughter (C) and her deceased’s sons’ four children (her grandchildren). She left her entire estate to her daughter and made no provision for her grandchildren. There was, however, evidence that the grandchildren had received fairly substantial gifts before her death. One of the grandchildren (K) made a claim for more funds. She also sought orders

that (C) refund monies back into the estate. She alleged that whilst her grandmother was still alive, (C) had used her position as Attorney under an Enduring Power of Attorney granted by the mother to give herself $642,000 from her mother’s funds to buy a property in Queensland. The Power of Attorney was worded to allow (C) to pay monies to benefit herself. Judge Slattery confirmed that he was obliged to follow an earlier decision which had recently expressed the view that benefit clauses “mean what they say”. He stated that (C) therefore had the power to pay herself.

Ahoy Pirates

Ahoy young pirates, Tea Gardens Library is the place to be this July school holidays for some swashbuckling fun.

By Margie TIERNEY

AHOY young pirates, Tea Gardens Library is the place to be this July school holidays for some swashbuckling fun. Magician Quenorie Eades is back at the library, this time hosting a pirate party. “The kids can come in fancy dress if they want, face makeup, or just wear an eye patch,” Library Chris Shelly told News Of The Area. “She’s organising lots of fun games including a treasure hunt and tug-of-war.” Chris said “Beware

however, Quenorie may make some kids walk the plank and if you are really naughty you’ll have to scrub the deck.” There’ll be craft activities for the children, maps and hats to make, maybe the odd sword or two and what pirate would be complete without a patch. There will also be maggoty biscuits and seaweed water and gold for afternoon tea. Sounds yummy. Cost per child for the Pirate Party on Wednesday 12 July from 2pm to 4pm is $7. As always though,

Budget Snub

THE NSW Government is touting the budget as the “envy of the western world” with record spending on health, education and infrastructure. But Myall Coast residents have been overlooked, with no new local projects announced. Port Stephens MP, Kate Washington, said the budget highlights the Government’s misplaced priorities, who has plenty of cash to splash on Sydney’s inner-city road projects while ignoring regional communities. As part of the Government’s record spend on education, an additional $60 million has been committed to catch up with the maintenance backlog in NSW Schools, which is reported to be a total of $775 million. With no new funds allocated for the $119,443 maintenance backlog at Tea Gardens Public School, Ms Washington said it would take eight years at the current funding rate to complete the repairs. “Families across this region have every right to be upset by the government continuing to ignore the educational needs of their children,” she said. “Our schools are bursting at the seams, demountables have become permanent fixtures and maintenance backlogs are soaring.” In the Myall Lakes Electorate, funding has

been allocated for upgrades at Taree Police Station and Manning Base Hospital. Addressing Parliament last week, Myall Lakes MP Stephen Bromhead, spoke about the “fantastic budget” and “the announcement of another $9.8 million” for Manning Base. “Stage one of the hospital is under construction and now there is funding to continue it,” Mr Bromhead stated. “At the 2015 election, Labor said the redevelopment was a lie and would never happen, but it is up and running.” The budget also includes $100 million for palliative care in NSW, which Mr Bromhead said “is an important measure for the Myall Lakes”. Residents advocating for funding for ongoing dredging of the Myall River and a boat ramp in North Arm Cove have drawn a blank, whilst $244 million has been allocated to expand NSW Art Gallery. Ms Washington said Myall Coast residents “deserve better than the misguided priorities of this Government” who has “sold our poles and wires, Newcastle Port and the Land Titles Office”. “We are all bearing the burden of the sales but seeing no return. The needs in our community are not being met. It’s all going to Sydney,” she said.

BIANCA Mason has received the prestigious Pierre de Coubertin award in recognition of her involvement in sport and for displaying the Olympic ideals of teamwork, fair play and sportsmanship, both on and off the field. The award was presented by NSW Olympic Council President and AOC VicePresident, Helen Brownlee, at an Olympic Academy day recently held in Sydney. The Bulahdelah Year 12 student has been involved in sport since she was eight years old, and currently plays first grade soccer, regularly competes at State Athletics Championships and is also a classical dancer. As part of the selection criteria for the award, Bianca submitted a literary piece on the moment during the 2016

Rio Games that made the biggest impact on her. Bianca said she wrote about Paralympian James Turner, who smashed the world record and won gold in the 800 metres. “I trained with James for five years at the Forster/Tuncurry Little Athletics Club, he is very determined, motivated and a naturally talented athlete,” Bianca said. “His gold medal demonstrates that by pushing yourself, you can overcome

barriers and achieve your goals.” In addition to receiving her award, Bianca also heard from three Olympians, including rower Cameron Girdlestone, who recounted his Olympic journey. She also took part in a boxing session with Rio 2016 boxer Shelley Watts. Bianca said, “Meeting the Olympians was inspirational”. “Shelley is from Laurieton, and shows that even though you come from a small town, you can make

it all the way,” she said. Bianca is currently balancing a hectic training schedule with her HSC studies, and has her sights firmly set on representing Australia at the 2020 Tokyo

Olympics. “To represent your country, family and hometown would be a dream come true,” she said. Bianca was amongst an elite group of 70 NSW secondary students who received the Australian Olympic Committee’s award last week.

MYALL Coast parents have welcomed the $100 sporting rebate for school-aged children announced as part of last week’s NSW Budget. The Active Kids Rebate will be available from 1 January next year, to assist with covering the cost of sports registration and membership, as well as swimming lesson fees. Belinda Cunningham said her two children are involved in soccer and swimming, which both attract a $90 registration fee for each child. “The rebate is definitely welcome, as the costs of registrations, uniforms and equipment certainly do add up,” Belinda told News Of The Area. For small businesses, insurance duty will be abolished on commercial vehicles, as well as professional indemnity and public liability insurance, bringing savings of around five percent on premiums. Bulahdelah Farm and Garden owner Dave Saul, said as the duties are a small component of their total running costs, “there is really nothing in the budget for early for this exciting repeat performance. small businesses”. “It is only the largest of the small businesses that will get any real benefit from the removal of the duties,” he said. For primary producers, the budget includes the removal of the 2.5 percent premium on crop and livestock insurance duty. Anthony Dorney, from Relf’s Mill in Bulahdelah, said the reduction in premiums is a positive for farmers. “Every little bit helps, but not all primary producers will benefit,” he said. “The timber industry has missed out on any reforms, and we are still waiting on the government to make a decision on the industry roadmap, which we hope will ensure a stronger and more sustainable industry.” The budget also includes $6million for a new antibullying scheme in NSW Schools. from Donna at Altitude Travel - Shop 10 Myall Quays Shopping Centre, Tea Gardens. FEARS that the Bulahdelah bypass would spell disaster for the local economy have almost faded to a distant memory. The 8.6km stretch of highway was officially opened in June 2013 and four years on, many businesses have reported a thriving trade. The Mount View Hotel is regularly full, and without the constant bottleneck traffic that once snaked through the town, guests are enjoying the quieter, country atmosphere. Owner of the family-run business, Patrick Bramston, said the opening of the bypass coincided with the soaring

popularity of online booking sites. “Although there is less passing traffic, we have had an increase in business,” he said. “We are getting more people who are using internet applications to find a place to stay before they reach here.” Patrick said they have increased their employees’ working hours to cater for the rise in business. Café On Main is also thriving, with travellers making up 70 percent of their weekly trade. Kevin and Kay Aitken who have owned the business for 10 years, said Bulahdelah is a perfect stopping distance for people travelling through from Sydney or other areas. “Everything is homemade and we are still busy keeping up with the demand,” Kevin said. “We also have some regular couples coming up from Newcastle for the day,

newsofthearea.com.au just to go to the butchers, bakers and come to get some homemade goods to take home.” Kevin said they open at 5.30am, and are busy well into the afternoon. Figures show the number of travellers calling into the Visitors Information Centre has increased by about five percent since the opening of the bypass. Improved public facilities and Lions Park, which caters for self-contained campers, are some of the initiatives that encourage travellers to continue to stop. But the picture is not entirely rosy, with some businesses feeling the pinch. “Since the bypass, there has been a significant downturn in trade, I’ve never known it to be this quiet,” Newsagent Sue Chick told News Of The Area. A few other businesses report they have cut back on opening hours due to the reduction in passing trade.

q Patrick Bramston said more people are now booking accomodation ahead.

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from our three News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. Send your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb. Dear Jasminda,

At 8.00pm on a Sunday night, my son tells me that he has to dress up as a wolf for a performance. I do not have anything in the house that resembles a wolf. What should I do? Mrs PV, Salamander Bay WELL, Mrs PV, what you should do is nothing, because that will teach your son to be more organised and selfsufficient. By doing nothing, you will hopefully be bringing up a child who turns into an adult who is not rewarded by leaving unpleasant tasks to others – right up until the very last minute on a Sunday night when you should be drinking red wine in front of an open fire or watching a movie, or soaking in a bath. But that is not what you will do, because you are a mother and you will feel judged by the drama teacher if little Sonny-Jim turns up to his performance with wolflike facial expressions drawn onto his face with your mascara and a pair of Explorer socks that do look slightly wolfish, because they’ve been washed with the towels and are covered in loose threads. Instead you will rant and rave and then you will go door-knocking, begging your neighbours for any costume items that looks remotely like they could be turned into a wolf with a few safety pins or some double-sided tape or a nail gun. Or else you will go up to the school, like a wolf in sheep’s clothing, and you will explain that your son has performance jitters and is suffering from some form of bea-wolf-by-Monday-post-traumatic-stress-disorder and he will not be performing on Monday, but on Friday, when he is feeling better. And then, if that doesn’t work, you will just raise your face skywards and howl. Carpe diem, Jasminda

Country Duo on the Rise By Margie TIERNEY

A LOVE of country and bluegrass music is paying off for popular Karuah Duo PJ and STIX. Peter James and Michael McGuirk have been playing together for the past three years, performing at clubs and pubs in the Hunter, Port Stephens and up and down the coast. They were also among the local stars at the Lost Highway Bluegrass Festival in May. “We often do free shows for local community and fundraising events,” Peter

James said. But it’s their Busking at the Blue Water Country Music Festival in Nelson Bay that’s paid big dividends for Peter and Michael. They busked and sang and strummed in the rain for the four days of the festival “To our surprise we received the Award for Best Duo and we were also booked to perform at the Toyota Showcase Marque which gives us a chance at going to next year’s Country Music Festival in Tamworth,” Peter said. The Nelson Bay Music Festival has been going

since 2006 and this year an estimated 20,000 people tuned in over the long weekend. “There was some great talent in the Nelson Bay area with free performances, and it was a great weekend despite the poor weather.” “The best part was meeting up with other musicians who we haven’t seen for years who travelled from the Central Coast and Hunter Valley.” PJ and STIX’s next gig is at the Botanical Gardens in Heatherbrae on Tuesday 4 July.

TAKING a trip down memory lane with 102-year-old Allan Stewart is like stepping back in time through a century of Australian history. News Of The Area was

given the privilege recently of interviewing Dr Stewart on the occasion of his latest award, a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List. “It’s a record for the family

to appreciate for all the help they’ve given me,” Dr Stewart said. To call the honour the icing on the cake of a life well lived, would be an understatement. His love of country, love of family, passion for learning, sport and community have played out his entire life. Allan Stewart lived through the Great Depression, studied dentistry at Sydney University, graduated with honours and was offered a scholarship to further his studies at the North Western University of Chicago. He went on to receive a doctorate. He served his country in World War II. He married and had six children. All through the years, there was a love of sport,

especially cricket. He played for the 1st Eleven for Australia House in England as the opening batsman and was given the honour of wearing the ‘Baggy Green Cap’. Throughout his life though, Allan never stopped learning or giving to his community. Allan volunteered his services to Meals on Wheels in Tea Gardens for a decade and was a rostered driver

to take people to medical appointments. Not done with his studies, he enrolled in a law degree in 2001. In 2006 Allan became the world’s oldest Graduate. His penchant for learning continued and yet another degree followed in 2010, Allan obtaining a Masters of Clinical Science (Complementary Medicine). At the age of 95, he broke his own world record.

His daughter Anne approached three of his University Professors to be his referees for the OAM; they didn’t hesitate. One of Allan’s sons likes to joke that his father now has so many letters after his name that the OAM slips off the page. A humble Dr Stewart simply stated, “I’ve had a very fortunate life.”

NEWS Of The Area (NOTA) is linking arms with Tilligerry Adult and Community Education (TACE) to cosponsor a national short story competition which is now open for entry. Former school principal and chief judge Lloyd Hogg said that with prize money of $1100, the competition will draw entries from all over Australia.

“We have emailed over 100 writers’ groups in all states and with exposure in the three NOTA editions we expect that many local creative writers will be submitting entries,” he said. “It costs just $10 to enter one story and $5 for each additional submission,” he added. “There is a limit of 2000 words and writers can send in

stories on any topic.” Full details of prize money and entry conditions can be found on www.tilligerry.com by clicking on ‘Literature Award’ in the left hand green sidebar. Or simply go to the News Of The Area website and follow the links. Entries close 30 September and results will be announced in November on a date to be advised.

Hawks finally beat Eagles LEAGUE

Tea Gardens Hawks By Neil REYNOLDS THE Tea Gardens Hawks broke a 13 year hoodoo at Windale Oval on Saturday. The Hawks had not defeated the Eagles at the ground since 2003. A grudge game against the reigning A grade premiers was expected. The Eagles had knocked the Hawks out in a controversial 2016 final game and the

clash live up to expectation. A disrupted preparation saw 4 regular players unavailable for the game. A thankful Club saw four last minute addition to the seasons side. In slippery conditions, the Hawks defeated Windale by 24 points to 16. CJ Misifosa, Steven Soper, and Kurt Langdon were made inroads into the Eagles defence all day. Langdon maintained strong form in the centres that saw him score 2 tries in last week’s win. Halfback, Luke Handsaker

orchestrated the attack, giving his outside backs plenty of options. Jack Beverley played a typical 5/8th’s game in attack, and was strong in defence. Up the middle Mikey Nanai continued his impact in the front row, supported by Matty Cameron whose time on return was strong. Late signing, Benny Langdon added starch to the backrow along with young gun Aaron Bills. Nathan Ruse was tradesman around the ruck, and David Edmonds continued his 110% effort with and without the ball.

q Former school principal and chief judge Lloyd Hogg. Cain Waterman, in his first year in open competition, continues to impress. His work ethic is undoubted, and enthusiasm strong. He is among a number of players in the side that has played with the Myall River Juniors, and is keen to develop his game. Highlights of the win was Jade Duroux run down of the leagues ‘fastest player” to save a certain try, and Anthony Cameron’s 80 metre run to score and put the Hawks 14 point in the lead. Brendon Davies, Steven Soper, Anthony Cameron, Jade Duroux, and Benny Langdon, scored tries. Luke Handsaker kicked 2 goals

BOWLING Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club By The JAFFA 21 June THE rain of the past three weeks passed and fine and sunny weather greeted a full-house of 42 bowlers for the usual Nominated Triples competition. Winners were decided by allowing 20 points for each win plus margins. Taking away the money was the team of Greg Smith, Geoff Page and Noel Jackson. Runners-up were Ken Devlin, Col Amos and Mark Hair. 23 June Although overcast, the weather stayed fine for a day of Fabulous Friday Pairs. A near record field of 29 players attended including six lady bowlers. Winners were decided by the team with the lowest winning margin. The Triples team of Bryan McPhie Barry Goode and Bill Heylbut managed

from three attempts. Best in defence was awarded to Nathan Ruse. Best attack was CJ Misifosa. Jack Beverley was the supporter’s choice. Referees points went to Steven Soper, and Cain Waterman was voted the “players player” choice. Player of the round was shared by Steven Soper and David Edmonds. This year’s competition has shown many twists, with player availability being a major factor in the Hawks position on the ladder. The Hawks are still on the bottom of the ladder, although only four points from the final five, and 9 points from Dora Creek,

that feat taking first prize money. They were closely followed by John Atherton and Tony Attard. The $260.00 jackpot was won and by Lon Richards and Dale Winter. Congratulations to them! I hope that the jackpot going off does not deter our regular Friday players from playing next week, when the prize money will go back to $20.00. 25 June The long-awaited final of the Club Championship Fours was played today in great weather. For those of my readers with long memories the finalists were the teams of Richard Lee, Jeff Baker, Sean Mearrick and Paul Syron, (they currently hold the Fours Championship crown), and the team of John Slater, John Younghusband, George Winter and Doug Naylor. I would like to report that the match was a closely contested event that had all the spectators on the edge of their seats. Such was not the case with the title holders dominating the contest from start and to its early demise. The Paul Syron team held a commanding 26-6 lead at the 16th end when opposing Skip, Doug Naylor conceded defeat. Congrats to the 2017 Club Fours Championship winners; Richard Lee, Jeff Baker, Sean Mearrick and Paul Syron.

who lead the competition after 11 games. A solid core of players has kept the campaign alive. The lack of good backup against strong competition has seen the side struggle in round one. With resolve, the Hawks have won both games in the second round, and are committed to a strong run home to the semi-finals. The Hawks are at home this Sunday to South Newcastle. The game will kick off at 2pm. The Lady Hawks will play Newcastle University in the lead up game, which will kick off at 1pm

Annual Trophy Day

Bowling Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club By Lynda RICHARDS

IT has been a busy week of bowling for club members this week. On Monday 19 June Lynda

Richards, Robyn Webster, Deyonne Page and Karen McPhie headed to Fingal Bay to bowl at their Invitation Day. Unfortunately, we didn’t end the day as winners, a loss in one game and a draw in the next.

q Presenting Trophy: Lemon Tree Passage Club President Annette Zoutendijk receiving trophy from Robyn Webster.

Thursday, 29 June, 2017

A great day, enjoyed by all participants. Tuesday 20 June: Our annual Trophy Day against Lemon Tree Passage Women’s Bowling Club. This was the fourth year for this event. Our club have been the winners of the trophy for the past three years. Format for play Fours, six teams from each club competing. Winners decided by adding scores from each game. We ended the day with two wins and a drawn game, sadly not good enough. Lemon Tree Passage 128 v Tea Gardens 89. Congratulations to Lemon Tree Passage but next year will be a different story. No social bowls played. Thursday 22 June: Two games of Triples, 18 ends played. On Rink 4 Bev Dunn, Sheril Johnson and Lynn Green were leading on the 6th end 8 v 0 against Bette Saillard, Dorothy Thompson and Carol Hayden. Carol’s team fought back

Lynne’s team claimed victory winning 19 v 14. Great bowling ladies. Rink 4 was a contest between Francis Betar, Karen Green and Karen McPhie v Ingrid Luck, Robyn Webster and Deyonne Page. Winners here Karen’s team 27 v 13. To quote from a member of the losing team, “We lost, badly, basically through back, foot injury and one player trialling new bowls”. Perhaps, the other team bowled well? No comment. That’s bowls, you have to love the game. The winners for the day with the highest score were Francis Betar, Karen Green and Karen McPhie. Coming events Versatility Day on Thursday 29 June; this is an annual event sponsored by Pelican Pest Control. Veterans Day at Karuah Bowling Club on the 30 June, 18 of our members are bowling in this event. Good luck, ladies enjoy your day. Sunday mixed bowls recommences on 2 July, names to be submitted by 9.30am play starts 10.00am.

However, the Ratz scored four quick tries due to a combination of a quicker Ratz backline breaking at half time with the Ratz leading 24-3. In the second half of the clash, the Muddies rallied and played catch up with the final score being 43-22 for the Ratz. The Muddies were well represented by new player, Kayden John ably assisted by

Ray Sharp, Jack Hyde and Trent Page. In the backs, none tried harder than Chris Sando, Nathan Colver, Riley Hunter and Kyle Nickle. Muddies need to train hard this week in order to have a “must win” against Old Bar Clams at yet another home game to be played at Myall Park this Saturday, kickoff 3.00pm.

Qualifying Finals Karuah RSL Men’s Bowls Club By Trevor DAVIES

WITH the exception of very few playing days, wet weather has prevented play of most of the scheduled games at Karuah Bowls Club for the last two weeks. A big roof may have allowed more play, but would stop the grass growing, so that’s simply not an option given the beautiful grass greens our club at Karuah is famous for. The ever stoic Gordon Latimore, Club President, said, “It just makes the good days even better” and there were some very competitive games played on the days where there was a short break in the wet weather. The Men’s Minor Singles

Championship has progressed with some huge games played on slow greens. Dave Benson was able to get and stay in front of Ben Taylor, While Dave Austin was able to defeat Peter Green. In the Semi Final, Dave Benson then went on to defeat Dave Austin in a high quality game that changed leads a couple of times and will now go on to play Max Rosser in the Grand Final next Saturday at 1pm. This game should be a cracker and seats are still available on the RSL verandah at the usual price (free!). On a dry morning on Friday, the Ladies Triples Final was decided with Robyn Latimore, Kim Post and Lyn Cale ending up with the win over Marg Nolan, Pam Cembala and Sandie Lowndes

in a high quality game, well played by all involved. The Club junior development program continues with the green full of young players every Friday afternoon. It’s great to see the next generation of players coming through, with some great potential being shown. If you would like to have a roll on the best grass green on the mid coast, free beginner sessions are still available every Sunday morning. Our Tuesday and Thursday morning social comps are (weather permitting) proving popular for locals and visitors alike, 9.30am names and 10.00am first bowls, it’s best to ring the RSL to confirm if weather is a doubt. See you at Karuah.

Masters State of Origin By Margie TIERNEY STATE of Origin isn’t only the domain of Rugby League. For the past 14 years there’s been a battle royal in the pool between swimmers from New South Wales and Queensland in the annual Masters State of Origin Carnival. This year the competition was held at Yamba and nine swimmers and a support crew from the Myall Masters Club recently made the 500 kilometre journey to the northern New South Wales coastal town. Chris Lock, Chris Mobbs, Brad Jensen, Michael Rose, Leon Bobako, Sharon Taylor, Linda Stubbs, Cheryl Rose

and Liz McKay all took to the water against competitors from 22 clubs. “Myall Masters

performed exceptionally well, achieving fourth place overall and fourth in the average score,” Valerie

Mobbs, told News Of The Area. “Not bad considering the stiff competition from

Council purchased the land for a public recreational reserve and in 1938, on the inception of Newcastle City Council, it was placed in their trusteeship where it has been ever since. Much work and many improvements since then have resulted in today’s fabulous family playground and tourist attraction. Our walk took us through wooded areas of significant

remnant vegetation and a restored rainforest providing habitats for a range of wild fauna including Brushtail Possums, Grey-headed Flying Foxes and Powerful Owls. There were a few steep climbs and my activity app tells me that we walked up the equivalent of 22 floors. So a good cardio workout as well. We walked the boardwalk

to find birds including the Australian King Parrot, mammals like the Brushtail Rock Wallaby, Koala and Wombat and even reptiles such as the Eastern Longnecked Turtle, Diamond Python and Eastern Bluetongued Lizard to name a few. Sydney, Newcastle, Gold Coast and the host Club, Clarence River which fielded 30 swimmers.” Valeria said, “Liz McKay, Michael Rose, Leon Bobako and Christopher Lock deserve special mention for achieving third, second and first placings respectively in their age groups.” Michael Rose was entered in six out of seven events achieving a well deserved second placing overall. Out of the pool the conditions were very cold and rainy. “Our Head Coach, Brad Jensen, was primed to crash through the 14 second barrier for the 25 metre Freestyle, making him one of the fastest men in Australia in his age group, however the inclement weather forced the organisers to abandon

Thursday Walkers head to Blackbutt By Helen WATKINS

A MUCH longed for rain free day and the Thursday Walkers headed south to Newcastle to enjoy walking in Blackbutt Reserve. With over 182 acres of bush land in the suburb of New Lambton, Blackbutt Reserve started life as a Depression era subdivision that was doomed to failure. The then New Lambton

BEHIND every local sporting association for our children is a group of volunteers who keep the wheels turning and ensure our youngsters get to play their favourite sport. Myall Coast Little Athletics Centre (MCLAC) has only just finished its season but its committee is already

in order to have a “must win” against Old Bar Clams at yet another home game to be played at Myall Park this Saturday, kickoff 3.00pm.

parents and sponsors for their ongoing support. “A very special thanks to our Major Sponsors, Myall Pharmacy and the Tea Gardens Country Club Motel for their ongoing support over the years and $1500 sponsorships for the 201617 season,” Secretary Melisa Brown said. “Both of these businesses

are part of the MCLAC family and allow us to keep the centre going.” “Our Silver sponsors in 2016-17 were Brighter Beginnings and Auroras Chinese Takeaway, both being first time sponsors and boosting our core funding pool with $500 sponsorships.” MCLAC was also very fortunate to receive a number

of donations throughout the year from Kelly’s Famous Bakehouse with continuous donations of bread for the weekly barbeques, the Anglican Church Parish of Bulahdelah & Tea Gardens donated $500 and Lazy Paddles donated a major prize for the Christmas raffle valued at $400. The Lioness Club of Tea

Gardens Hawks Nest, made a $2,000 donation following a Myall Coast Entertainers community disbursement, with the funding reserved for the 2017-18 season. For new or continuing Little Athletes and/or sponsorship pledges, please contact Melisa Brown, MCLAC Secretary, on 0457 671 400.
