The organisers encourage cutting-edge judging procedures and provide a host of social and educational events that promote knowledge sharing and the ferment of ideas. This event provides industry professionals and exhibitors the opportunity to taste every single entry in the show as a way of benchmarking the scene across Australia and New Zealand. The Myall Community Arts and Craft Centre recently donated $1,000 to the Surf Club. “This money was the proceeds of a raffle held leading up to and during the Art and Craft Show, which was held in January,” Janette Coppock said. “The raffle prize was a beautiful oil painting by Joan Richards, a member of the Centres Art Group and one of the area’s best loved artists.” Janette added, “The Myall Coast Arts and Craft Centre is pleased to be able to support groups such as the Surf Lifesaving Club, which makes such a valuable contribution to our community.” The Rotary Club of the Myall Coast was also pleased to be able to make another $1,000 donation to the Surf Club, happily received by Surf Club President Tony Logue from Rotary President Peter Sivyer. It was a big year for the relatively small Club, with the Open Reserve Men’s Boat Crew crowned world champions at the International Life Saving World Championships at Glenelg Beach in South Australia late last year.

It is not always plain sailing when brothers and sisters own real estate together. It quite often happens, for example, that one sibling lives in the property rent free whilst the other sibling receives no benefit from the property other than the prospect of capital gain. What happens if that sibling wishes to sell the property and the other wants to stay living in the property? The law provides a mechanism to force a sale of jointly owned property – although the process can be slow and expensive. It is difficult for the sibling living in the property to resist the sale unless there is legal agreement permitting the sibling to live in the property
(such as a licence or lease) or promises made to the sibling that they can live there for the rest of their life. In a recent case, Lewin v Lewin [2019] NSWSC 380, 2 sisters were in this predicament. The Court ultimately ordered the sale of the unit (it took more than 12 months) and ordered that the sister living in the property and refusing to agree to the sale should pay half of the legal costs incurred by the sister who wanted the property sold. The moral of the story is that any sibling finding themselves in joint ownership with another sibling where disputes may arise should think carefully about the legal implications.

Men’s Bowls commentary Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club The JAFFA 24 APRIL: Another great attendance today for the usual Wednesday nominated Triples competition. Fifty-eight bowlers turned out today enjoying 2 games of bowls in very good conditions. The Club welcomed visitors today from Albury; Lachlan Hair (son of Mark) and Ian Millar from Pennant Hills. Peter Campbell had his first game on a Wednesday and hopefully enjoyed the experience and will be a regular player. The winners of the second game were

Kevin Barbie, Barry Goode and Ian Baker with +19, playing on the grass, and Ron Jones, Chris May and Neil Kibble on +15 on the synthetic. Kev Nowland, Mike Dellaca and Leigh Hunt were successful with the luck card draw. Tom Short took out the Myall Bistro voucher. 27 April: Round 7 of the Newcastle District Pennant competition was played today with the First National Grade 4 Dolphins playing away at Beresfield. Beresfield were keen to seek revenge for the loss to Tea Gardens at home and they succeeded in their mission. There were two close games but in the third match, Tea Gardens just could not get into the game. Beresfield winning the contest 72-49!
The home ground advantage was denied the First National Grade 6 side scheduled to meet Karuah at home. Through no fault of their own, Grade 6 were directed to play this match at Hexham, putting them, in my view, at a distinct disadvantage. It showed up in the scores with the Danny Johnson four the only successful team. The Bill Thrift side had a narrow loss, but the remaining team struggled and were muscled out of the game. Karuah won the match 62-48! The First National Grade 7 Dolphins took on East Maitland on their home turf. Leading the competition at this stage, the “mighty sevens” really wanted to consolidate their lead. Alas, it was not to be. Although narrowly winning two of the
NewsOfTheArea.com.au
matches, the remaining team were not good enough to bridge the gap and the match was lost by four shots. East Maitland winning 61- 57! Next Saturday, in round 8, Grade 4 play East Maitland at home, Grade 6 play Hexham at Hexham and Grade 7 play Hexham at Tea Gardens. 28 April: I have no results for the remaining quarter-final match in the Club Championship Pairs that was played today. We will all know next week! In other news; Nominations are now being taken for the Bowls Management Committee at the Annual General Meeting of the Bowling Club on Sunday 23rd June. All positions will become vacant and all members are encouraged to consider nominating and having a say in the running of the club.

I have a dog and a cat. What are my chances of being accepted as a tenant?
Until recently, having a pet – anything other than a goldfish or a budgie – consigned you to rental purgatory. Rejection was the norm. If you were accepted, often the best you could expect was very basic accommodation. But now, with so many Australians having four-legged family members, times have changed. Potential tenants don’t need to relinquish their dog or cat in order to secure a roof over their own heads. Generally rental properties are advertised with ‘pets permitted’ or ‘no pets’ so you know what you’re looking at from the outset. A ‘pet bond’ may be asked for in addition to the rental bond in case of damage to carpets, gardens etc. Many tenants provide references from previous landlords attesting to their pet’s good behaviour. Landlords and Agents want good tenants and pets do not necessarily preclude you from securing a lovely rental property. We have tenants renting with their dogs & cats and they have always been treated with respect by both the Agency and the Landlord. At R and R Property, we and our landlords assess every application on its merits and treat everyone with respect. Hope this helps Denise

Final Day of Pennant Play Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club By Lynda RICHARDS TUESDAY 23rd April: The final day of play for our Pennant sides. Grade 4 yellow and Grade 4 Blue bowled at home. The Grade 2 side bowled at Soldiers Point. Our Grade 4 Yellow team bowled against Adamstown. Both teams had a win and gained another 5 points, next step Post Sectional Finals which commence on Sunday 28th April. Here's hoping they bring back a flag. Our Grade 4 Blue side were defeated by Nelson Bay Red, putting them in third position in their section. A wonderful achievement by this side considering most of them are new to Pennants. Unfortunately our Grade 2 side, who were in first place in their section prior to play were defeated by Soldiers Point Blue resulting in them coming second in their section. Next year ladies, you will do it. Many thanks to Kathie Rimmer for umpiring the majority of the Pennant games and Jo Younghusband for 1/71 Marine Drive, Tea Gardens, NSW 2324

Karuah Bowling Bt Trevor DAVIES
q Dave Austin (R) congratulates the new Karuah Major Singles Champion Scott Fitzalan, overseen by Karuah President Sam Rees.
A COOL, breezy but most importantly for bowlers, dry spell on Karuah’s grass green this last weekend, saw some great lawn bowls played. Saturday saw the Grade 4 and Grade 7s play at home so 6 full rinks were in use by over 50 bowlers. Robyn Latimore, a keen and knowledgeable spectator said “given the tragic loss of bowlers and friends in the last 2 weeks, it was uplifting to see so many good mates out on the green enjoying each other’s company”. Robyn was of course speaking about the loss to the club of a fellow bowler Reg Cowling and a great friend to bowlers Vice President of the RSL Club Graeme Parker

in a terrible car accident and whose funerals had been held this last week. Bowlers however are a pragmatic lot and they went out and bowled in their honour this week despite the sadness. John French respected observer and commentator, said “working and playing together, supporting each other in hard times, it’s what involvement in a strong club is all about”. Results don’t always follow extra effort but they did on Saturday. The 4s won on all 3 rinks over Mayfield West with a full 10 points and while our 7s were beaten by a strong Wallsend team, our 6s won an away fixture against Tea Gardens by 2 rinks and 9 points to 1. Dave Austin reported that “it was a gritty win against a strong side, well supported by their very vocal and parochial crowd of supporters”. Sunday saw

more bowling with a well attended social gala in the morning and in the afternoon, the Champaign of Championships, the Major Singles Final. This event was played between Dave Austin, long term stalwart of the club and Scott Fitzalan, a relatively new and younger but much respected bowler within the club. Both players had to defeat past champions in cracking games to get to the final. Sam Rees, Karuah’s President said “It was an honour to mark the game between two such respected Club members”. The game was as good as expected and while Dave played some of his best bowls ever, Scott went on to win 31 to 23 after 31 action filled ends. Peter Green on the verandah said “it was as good a game as you could ever see and it had everything, skilled draw bowling, delicate on shots and powerful drives”. Both ends of the skill spectrum, social and championship are fun on the green at the Karuah RSL. See you at Karuah.
