in June 2018, at that time being a $1million redevelopment as part of state budget funding. The NSW State barricades went up when the part of the structure to be upgraded was removed, then on Friday 24 January the new demountable was placed beside the remaining weatherboard Courthouse. It will only be a matter of days before this new demountable will be โon-lineโ and in use as services are connected however a definite date for an official handover is to be advised. The Courthouse itself is a Heritage listed item, as such the Tea Gardens Courthouse and Police residence, Marine Drive remain in place. The historical value to Tea Gardens of the Courthouse is immeasurable, with the earliest evidence where a request was made for a Police Station and Courthouse to be erected and service the community of Tea Gardens was in 1908, because existing structures on the site were in a dilapidated state. Regarding the date of the Courthouse it is estimated to be 1910 and the Police residence estimated around 1915 from a time when Police Constables were provided with a boat to navigate the river and Port and an era when activities such as illegal whisky distilleries made from old copper boilers were being discovered and confiscated. Kate Washington told News Of The Area," From the outset there has been a lack of transparency here, the Police need proper resources, the Tea Gardens Community deserves these resources and I will be going back to the Premier next week to ask what happened to the million dollars that was promised?" Councillor Len Roberts said," This is a fabulous building for Sydney but as the inaugural Chairman of the Local Historical Society, I can say this is not in keeping with the heritage design of the existing buildings."

Amazing Day on the Myall By Sandra MURRAY
COLOURFUL Australia Day celebrations by the Myall River โEveryone being together and having a good timeโ is how Peter Webb the President of the Tea Gardens Lions Club, described Australia Day 2020. The Lions Club cooked up a fantastic breakfast served to upbeat music from the country band J&J. The proceeds support their humanitarian efforts locally, Nationally, and Internationally. At 9.00am the band played the National Anthem for the Flag raising by Barry Whiteman, President of the RSL Sub Branch, followed by Official Awards. Citizen of the Year was awarded to the long-term President of the Red Cross in Tea Gardens, Jennifer Wenham. Red Cross supports communities impacted by disasters such as the recent bushfires. The Festivities continued with childrenโs games, including sack racing, replete with ice cream and lamingtons. The morning attracted over 600 people to the grassy riverside Moira Parade Reserve. Regular weekenders from Greystanes โ Sydney West, Elijah and Michelangelo Nassau dressed in OZ Day colours. The Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Family Research Group displayed stories about National disasters over the years and
how communities respond and recover. There was also an update on their successful News Of The Area (NOTA) to Trove project. Trove is an Australian online Library now spanning the years for NOTA articles from April 1970. The Family Research Group, Roslyn Bridger, Shirley Cox, Karl Lackman and Jenny Little with convict and relative, William Crofts, who was transported for life to Australia. The Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Historical Society displayed stories from the local past, with tales from the old shark processing factory at Pindimar. Lots of sharks, with around 25,000 killed between 1927 and 1933. Today only stories remain about the factory which burned to the ground. Sharks are now a protected part of our productive and healthy local marine environment. David Benson, the president of the Society, also spoke about rediscovering Aboriginal names for the area, some from the Gathang language of the Worimi people, the Traditional Owners of these lands and waterways. Jan Winn with scary shark stories from Pindimar (the place of black possums). One hundred years ago in 1920, the then Prime Minister was Bill Hughes and Australia Day was called First Landing, Anniversary or Foundation Day. Tea Gardens and surrounds were being logged for

It is estimated that 90% of Australiaโs 5.3 million baby boomers are predicted to retire this decade. It is also estimated that approximately 1.4 million workplaces are considered family business operated organisations, many of which were founded by baby boomers. The Australian economic landscape is on the precipice of a mass baby boomers exodus from organisations that were founded by baby boomers. As a result, business succession planning will be critical in ensuring the smooth operation of the respective family owned businesses and the Australian economy as a whole. In my experience, there is little to no consideration or appropriate planning by small to medium size family owned businesses in respect of the founderโs retirement, whether that be a transition to new family generations or to external third parties. Ensuring that an appropriate
plan is discussed, implemented and documented appropriately is vital to ensure the smooth transition of baby boomers out of their businesses, both for the benefit of the baby boomers themselves and stakeholders of the business. An entirely unfounded assumption that โeverything will work outโ is often the start and finish of many businessโ succession plans. Such an approach will inevitably result in disputes, heartache and financial loss. We recommend you contact the writer to ensure you can implement and achieve a smooth business succession plan. The impending mass exodus also has significant implications for baby boomersโ personal estate planning and we recommend anyone contemplating retirement should also contact our Felicity Wardhaugh to ensure their personal affairs are also in order.

MidCoastโs Aussie Day Award Winners
โOUR award recipients this year represent everything that is great about the people of the MidCoast region,โ said MidCoast Council Mayor David West. This yearโs nominees came from across the whole MidCoast Local Government area after it was decided to consolidate the three main ceremonies previously held at Gloucester, Taree and Forster into one single, civic ceremony. Members of Councilโs awards panel were grateful to everyone who took the time to nominate an individual or group they felt was deserving of regional honours, admitting it had been a difficult task to narrow down the field. There were six awards categories this year โ Cultural Award, Volunteer of the Year Award, Community Activity of the Year Award, Sportstar of the Year Award, Young Citizen of the Year and Citizen of the Year. MidCoastโs inaugural recipient of the Cultural Award is Joedie Lawler, CEO of Purfleet Taree Local Aboriginal Land Council and strong Biripi woman. โJoedie is everything we imagined when we decided to include the cultural award,โ said Mayor West. โShe has always been an active member of the community and is committed to showcasing and celebrating her culture with others.โ This year also included the very first Volunteer of the Year award, with Colin Howarth, a volunteer for The Bucketts Way Neighbourhood Group, receiving the

honours. As well as the neighbourhood group, Colin has also regularly volunteered for aged care services, a transport program that works in partnership with Cancer Council NSW and Hunter New England Health Services. Over the past seven year he has spent around three days a week helping others. โHeโs a truly selfless, generous person who deserves this award and more and weโre very grateful for his contribution to our community,โ added Mayor West. This yearโs Community Activity of the Year Award was presented to Great Lakes Food Trail, an event organised by Sue Williams. This event bring thousands of tourists to the area, educates attendees about local, ethical farming and continues to increase awareness of good and healthy food for the community. Jasmine Chamberlain is the 2020 Sportstar of the Year. Jasmine is a member of Manning Valley Dressage, Equestrian Australia and Federation Equestrian Internationale. She has been riding since she was 12 years old and has competed in Riding for the Disabled Australia Special Olympics Equestrian. Last year was a big year for Jasmine, winning three national Australia first places in Equestrian Australian Para Equestrian national video comps. The MidCoastโs Young Citizen of the Year is inspirational 15 year old, Asha Clarke. Asha has been a participant and volunteer with the PCYC, undergoing a range of
courses to become an accredited gymnastics instructor. For the last 12 months Asha has run a weekly Koori Gymnastics program specifically for young girls at risk in the community. She has not only been an instructor to the group, she has become a friend, mentor, role model and support person. The 2020, MidCoast Citizen of the Year was awarded to John Hahn. โJohn is an exceptional person, with a long history of serving his country and helping his community,โ said Mayor West. โIโm honoured to present him with this award and grateful to him for the work he
continues to do to better the MidCoast.โ John is a Vietnam Veteran, an Inventor and an active member of Cape Hawke Surf Life Saving Club and Forster Tuncurry Lions Club as well as assisting local aged care services and his Church. He received Life Membership of Cape Hawke Surf Club and is also the recipient of the highest Lions Award โ the Melvin Jones Fellowship. He has given time, support, assistance and care to others throughout his life. โAll our award recipients this year contribute to making our region a better place and I thank them for the dedication,โ added Mayor West.

numeracy skills. Based on 2018 information, Tea Gardens has approximately 180 students with around 25 teaching and support staff. Around 7% of the students scored in the top quarter of Australia, up from previous years. Year 3 students did particularly well in writing, with overall improvements in the levels of attainment up from last year. The 2019 results will be available on the My School website from August, together with information about attendance, staffing, budget and achievements. Useful information about starting school is also on the NSW Government education website. Tea Gardens Primary School runs local events such as the famous annual Art and Craft Expo over Easter. Events such as these are major fund raisers, supporting the school to maintain their excellent craft facilities, library, play areas, native gardens and a healthy canteen. The school and such events are supported by a renewed P&C Committee. There are always opportunities to improve how we support our local schools, including being vigilant and safe around the general vicinity. Information about upcoming events is in the Myall Coast NOTA.

SCHOOL is back from the 28 January, which is also the time for that special first day for many new kindergarten students. This year there will be seven classes including a new kindy and a K1 class. All of the teachers and the general assistant have been busy preparing the school with fresh paint in the classrooms and the gardens renewed. Welcoming new and old students alike is an inspiring aboriginal mural by artist Rachel Syron. From a learning perspective, the school is ready to support their students and families, as well as the community, by providing quality education and organising local events. The staff are committed to high quality, evidence based teaching and futures learning (using digital technologies), as well as supporting student wellbeing. Mrs Jennifer Wenham - Tea Gardens / Hawks Nest Citizen of the Year In a big surprise for Jennifer, the Tea Gardens Lions Club acknowledged her 14 years of service and support to the Red Cross, as well as to the community generally. The ceremony was conducted at the Lions Club Australia Day Breakfast. It was followed by a surprise celebration for Jennifer and her extended family and friends at the Uniting Church. Jennifer recalls first joining the Red Cross in Second Grade and door knocking with her sister around countryside Glenfield, NSW. โIt was around 1946 and we wore a Red Cross Koala Pinsโ, Jennifer remembers, โWe collected shillings and pence for the Red Cross which was run by the Headmasterโs wife. We also sold cupcakes and toffees at school to raise money to buy wool to knit layettes for local babies.โ The importance of helping others endured throughout her life as a city florist, Dungog dairy farmer, committed church member, loving wife to Ken, and a mother

Since then she has worked tirelessly at fund raising. โWe are in the top ten for fund raising from the Annual Australia Big Cake Bake. We also hold regular raffles, support fetes and run garage sales.โ Jennifer recalls raising money for specific causes such as Black Saturday, the Queensland floods and the recent bushfires. The 35 local members have also provided many Trauma Teddies to comfort impacted children. Jennifer acknowledges that, โit is important that local support also helps our local community. For example, we supported the local Surf Life Saving Club by purchasing defibrillators, and the local school building shade covers.โ Red Cross Australiaโs purpose is to โreduce suffering across Australia and internationally through mobilising the power of humanityโ. Jennifer reflected that volunteering remains important to communities, stating โYou get back what you give. You meet new people, build skills and gain confidenceโ.

Since late December, Council had been trucking water from the Tea Gardens Aquifer to Gloucester to fill town reservoirs after the Barrington River ceased to flow. The trucks will continue to provide a supplement to the water supply, with Council gradually reducing the number of trips as the plant comes back online. โWe are also sending a truck to Stroud to top up the water storage, and sending another to top up our reservoir at Kolodong near Taree, as a trial just in case thatโs ever required in future,โ said Mr Scott. โWeโre pleased that the rainfall has allowed us some reprieve, but Severe level 4 water restrictions are continuing for now, until we can be sure we have enough water to get through the hotter weather ahead.โ For more information on water restrictions and managing water supply during the drought, please visit midcoast. nsw.gov.au/waterrestrictions.

Craft Group ready for Raising Funds
q Bulahdelah local, Ashleigh Dorney.
By Margaret MUNRIGHT TWENTY nineteen is done and dusted but I, on behalf of members of the Wednesday Day Craft Group, canโt thank this community enough for its ongoing support of our fundraising efforts, be it Motherโs Day, or Christmas raffles or contributions to our Biggest Morning Tea. Weโre proud to be able to write cheques for local services, for which, at one time or another, we may depend on. As one of our usual projects Meals on Wheels recipients received a very practicable gift which no doubt is being put to good use. After a very productive year and our AGM we all enjoyed a welcome Christmas lunch at Mummโs, the food and the service faultless.

Eighteen year old Ashleigh completed her HSC last year and has been accepted to study a Bachelor of Business at the University of Newcastle. When News Of The Area asked Ashleigh how she was feeling about competing in the Zone Finals, she said, โI am so excited and starting to become a little nervous but I guess that is pretty normal.โ

MidCoast Water restrictions remain despite recent rain
MIDCOAST residents across the region welcomed substantial rain over last weekend, but water restrictions remain in place until regular rainfall returns to the region. "We are very pleased to see water flowing again in water courses across our catchment, but we canโt start refilling Bootawa storage just yet until the water cleans up,โ said Council's Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services, Robert Scott. Severe level 4 water restrictions will need to stay in place until river water quality improves and pumping to refill the Bootawa water storage can occur. Overall, the catchment has averaged around 84mm of rainfall for the weekend and 100mm for January so far. โThe rainfall we
have received looks even better when you consider that only 500mm was received for the whole of 2019. Obviously this year is already looking like it could be better that last year.โ While remaining optimistic, Mr Scott says MidCoast Council will continue to be prepared in case regular rainfall doesnโt return to the region over summer and autumn. โWe are optimistic that we will get a chance to transfer some water from the river to Bootawa Dam later this week or possibly next week. At this stage it is too early to be able to predict how quickly the water quality will improve and when we will be able to extract some water. It is also difficult to tell how fast the river levels may drop again โ so restrictions
3 million litres initially โ and make up the gap to supply emergency water to the Manning โ Great Lakes area. "We would like to thank everyone for the continued cooperation with water restrictions โ itโs essential we keep up this effort to save water, and not relax now that weโve had one decent fall of rain. Thereโs more to be done.โ Gloucester has had a small river rise and we are looking to recommence our water treatment plant and pumping from the river. The Karuah River at Stroud hasnโt seen the same increase in flow as the other sources, and we will keep watching this closely. Bulahdelahโs water storage has been refilled โ allowing a buffer for that water supply in case thereโs no further rain for a while.
remain in place until we are confident of supply.โ The rainfall has allowed more time to have the temporary desalination plant at Nabiac installed and ready to go. โUnfortunately the vandalism at the desalination plant construction site last week added at least a week of delay, so we will need every bit of extra time we can at this stage,โ said Mr Scott. For the Manning / Great Lakes supply, if the Bootawa water supply is exhausted, we will need to manage on around 15-17 million litres per day. The Nabiac borefield is being expanded so that it can provide up to about 14 million litres per day, and the temporary desalination plant at Nabiac borefield is essential to provide around an extra

River Action impressed with Community Response Dear News Of The Area
THE community response to our report on the state of our boat ramps has been great and the Myall River Action Group would like to thank all those who have expressed their concerns to MidCoast Council. For those who are yet to lodge- keep them coming as the more Council management is informed of our needs, the more likely we will have in achieving our goal. One disturbing factor has been brought to our notice, is that sections of the community take the opportunity to berate Council workers for Council inaction and we would urge those people to desist and rethink. These workers are on the front line, do the hard yards of physical activity and are the face of Council in their day to day activities. They are the easiest to target as they are unable to respond. They live in

We have found them all to be good people who care about their jobs and this community. Jetty Time Limit
OPINION Dear News Of The Area, MAY I offer the following to add to Jeff Shining Opinion article headed โJetty Time Limitโ ( NOTA page 5 23/01/20 ) Whilst totally endorsing Jeffโs factual description of our two wonderful Myall River boating mooring facilities here in Tea Gardens I wonder why the same approach to time limits etc was not taken as the public pontoons on the Clarence River at Maclean. We moored overnight there 2 months ago after taking these photos. The Tea Gardens facility has rarely ( if ever) been full to the point of denying berthing to incoming vessels as I see the pontoons from our home and can vouch for this comment.

The only challenge as Jeff points out is craft not mooring appropriately thus not allowing multiply berthing spaces. As to the identity of the โjetty mooring complainantโ I believe I have personally encountered this person. I was told that โ Tea Gardens didnโt welcome large boats from the side of Port Stephens as they took up all the roomโ. This was said pointing to our boat whom I reminded this person that I am a 40+ year Tea Garden resident . That meant nothing and I was told in no uncertain terms to limit my stay to the prescribed 2 hours. Very unfriendly and should I have been a visiting boat owner I would have not returned (another reason why the pontoons are empty maybe??) Rick Wraight Tea Gardens

Old Punt Ramp
Dear News Of The Area
I feel itโs important to let you know whatโs been happening at the old punt ramp site at Hawks Nest. Like me, you may have been driving over the bridge and watching the huge pile of rock appear and then disappear. All in a good cause. Itโs a great thing that oyster and fish reefs are being constructed in the Port. What I didnโt know was that our History Society had played an important role in 2007 in rescuing the site from oblivion and getting
grants to repair it with the help of Council. On the 20th December, 2019 I sent the attached letter to Kirk Dahle, the officer in charge of the project. I received what I would call a dismissive phone call assuring me that everything had been done with Councilโs approval and according to regulation. I was assured that the site would be returned to the public better than it had been before the thousand tons of rock were placed on it. I have not been able to speak to any Council officer who actually knew that it was happening.
Nevertheless, I believe that the reef project is a great one and I felt sure that the site would be looked after and remediated. My latest discussion with Kirk Dahle informs me that his superiors have agreed to donate a sum of around $450 towards an information sign about the heritage site for the Myall Coast Historical Society. My first impression of the site is that poles have been knocked over and removed, rock from the dump has been left on site, concrete has been cracked and ne effort has been made to remediate the site. The fact that no effort appears to have been made to record the state of the site before the work began as it should have been makes it difficult to assess what should be done now. Mr Dahle has agreed to meet with me at 10.30am on Tuesday 4th February at
the site. He has made it clear that he feels the site is now finished with and all that is required is the payment for half a sign to complete all transactions. I am extremely disappointed and concerned that this is how a worthwhile project should be conducted. David Benson President Myall Coast Historical Society

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from readers throughout the circulation area of our FOUR News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. SEND your concerns to Jasminda care of media@newsofthearea.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb. Dear Jasminda,
How am I going to get my teenagers to abide by the new 4 minute shower restrictions? Dear Mrs OP,
Mrs OP,
IT is a strange transition from the pre-teen years, when our children have to be forced to follow basic hygiene principles, to when they become teenagers and showers turn into a totally new past-time. Suddenly your kids start locking the door and taking music into the bathroom and you'll be lucky to see them for a couple of hours. I'm not sure what takes place during these teen beauty rituals but the aftermath is a flooded floor, three towels on the ground, the remnants of lotions and potions all over the mirrors, shower screens and tiles and various other calamities. It is not just fires that can create their own weather systems. Entering the bathroom after a teenager is like witnessing the aftermath of a tsunami. I do, however, have some great ideas on how to get them to keep to the fourminute timeframe. 1. Try an egg-timer. 2. Tell them that you will dock them $10 for every minute they go over the 4-minute mark. 3. Remove the door lock and threaten to drag them out if they can't follow the rules. 4. Install one of those water-saver shower nozzles. They are so unpleasant your teen won't want to go beyond 4 minutes. 5. Suggest that if they can't follow the new shower etiquette, you'll all have to revert to taking turns sharing the bathwater. 6. Have the local plumber install an automatic cut-off switch These simple suggestions should work. Just don't let them watch the news or they will start to question why there are water restrictions for residents when we are selling off our water supplies to the highest bidder. Mmmmm. They may just have a point. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Handicaps are calculated after every bridge game and the pair that have improved the most are named as โhandicap winnersโ. In this case, Graham and Jane improved more than anyone else playing at that session. Another interesting result was that Jo & John Younghusband returned from a holiday and managed to depose Chez Rands & Leslie Falla from their N/S winning streak on Friday 17th January. Tea Gardens Womenโs Bowls
Tea Gardens Womenโs Bowls By Lynda RICHARDS TUESDAY 21st January: Pennant Trials continuing, format for play, 3 games of Fours, a game of Triples and a game of Pairs. Lyn Nightingale, Jan Coomer, Lesley Kibble and Dot Dallas had a good win bowling against Ingrid Luck, Judi Polak, Maureen Campbell and Judy McGavock 28 v12. Robyn Beaumont, Robyn Webster, Lynne Green and Kayelene Pearson were leading by 11 shots on the 8th end in their contest, just "to add salt to the wounds" they then scored 8 shots on the 9th end now leading by 19 shots. This proved
to be their winning margin against Irene Roberts, Bev Rhodes, Bette Saillard and Dale Winter 30 v 11. Jean Glover, Lynda Richards, Deyonne Page and Karen McPhie led all the way v Karen Green, Maynie Roberts, Sandra Leisemann and Pat Baker winning 24 v 18. Christine Fossey and Sheril Johnson defeated Leona Clissold and Jill McBride 19 v 11. A win to Pam Gilchrist, Bev Dunn and Kathie Rimmer 11 v Julie Kennedy, Dorothy Thompson and Liz Kelly 7. The winners on the day determined from a random draw were Dot's team. Thursday 23rd January: Bowls was cancelled due to the hot humid conditions. Six bowlers attempted to have a "roll up"

Maynie Roberts (sub), Liv Everingham, Lynne Green and Kayelene Pearson winning 24 v 13 against Francis Betar, Sheril Johnson, Christine Fossey (sub) and Liz Kelly. Kayelene's team will progress to Round 2 of this Championship to be played on Thursday 30th January. Round 1, for the other teams competing in this event will be contested on Tuesday 28th January. COMMERCIAL CONVERSION โIโm currently looking at a shop converted into a residence. Iโve fallen in love with it but an unsure whether a shopping strip home is a good buy. Any advice?โ
THE conversion of former commercial premises into residential properties isnโt new. Banks, churches and corner stores for example have been popular โ and highly sought-after โ for many years. And this trend shows no signs of declining. Additionally, Iโm seeing more diversity in the conversion process โ small pubsand general retail outlets etc. As more tree-changers enter our small rural communities they often look to properties that might have a hint of the urban environment theyโve left behind by way of smaller blocks and a more centralized, convenient aspect, but with all the country towns theyโre heading to. So, store conversions are a really good combination of characteristics that make for a lovely lifestyle. You get the low maintenance block; that forgotten loaf of bread is literally a stoneโs throw away and after everything closes for the night, you have a lovely quiet street. Main street living in a country town is a world away from living on a metropolitan main street/shopping strip. You say youโve fallen in love with the property. With the best of both worlds literally on your doorstep, I say go for it.
I hope this helps Denise

Neil Kibble, Mike Delacca and Leigh Hunt 25 January Congratulations to the Management Committee for hosting a combined Triples event today. The last one was very successful and Iโm sure everyone who participated appreciated this one. All enjoyed the camaraderie and the cheese
and crackers after the game. The winners were Merv Mills, Jean Glover and Col Amos. In other news; There is a good field for the forthcoming Club Minor Pairs with the competition commencing next Saturday. The Minor Pairs nomination sheet has been posted and it is expected that this event will draw a huge field. Hopefully all new players will nominate as it will be an invaluable way to test and improve their skills.
