“Time for someone else to take the reins” By Margie TIERNEY THERE were some major changes to the committee of the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association at its recent Annual General meeting. The Group is looking for a new President following Trevor Jennings’ decision not to stand again. “Although I’ve enjoyed the past five years as President and Secretary of the Progress Association, I feel it’s time for someone else to take the reins,” Trevor said. “I’d be lying if I said that I’m not disappointed with the proceedings of the past year,” Trevor said.

“The efforts of the Progress Association were somewhat thwarted by the merger of Great Lakes Council with Taree and Gloucester and the internal cohesion of the Association’s Committee was also put to the test by the resignation of two Members late in the year.” “Notwithstanding these setbacks, a successful new bi-monthly meeting format was trialled to give Members and locals the opportunity to listen to guest speakers and engage them in discussion about important local issues.’’ Trevor added, “I foresee next year as being one of

IN an endeavour to further remind drivers to watch out for koalas that frequently cross Kingfisher Avenue, MidCoast Council has agreed to paint signage on the roadway. There will be signage similar to this at the foot of the Singing Bridge and at the intersection with Ibis Avenue. In addition, there will be large koala images facing in both directions in the middle of the danger stretch. Like many wildlife creatures, Spring is the start of the breeding season for koalas. This year has been a particularly active one with twice as many sightings being reported to us, compared to last year in September and October (28 compared to 14), however, we haven’t yet had any reports of mothers with last year’s babies on their back which is usual at this time

of year. There have been a few sightings this Spring in less common places. For the first time since 2009 a koala was photographed heading towards Yacaaba along Jimmy’s Beach.

Two koalas were spotted in North Arm Cove (Somerset Avenue and Eastslope Way) and two have been seen in Pindimar (Cambage Street and Kyah Street). Of course there have been sightings in most

THE Bulahdelah Community of Christ has recently closed its doors after serving the local area for well over a century. Congregation member Irene Worth said the tough decision to close was based on declining attendance, the lack of younger families joining and stewardship. “There are only a few of us left and we are all related, so we see each other all the time during the week,” Irene said. “There seems to be a trend away from the Church these days, I think a lot of younger people are disillusioned

Wendy Ballard and Evangelist Frank Flood led the service. “It was good to see Brothers and Sisters of the Faith come together from the Uniting, Anglican and Catholic Churches, and other friends and Church members from all around,” Irene said. “It showed that the Church is still a valuable part of the community.” Irene said although the Church is closing, “It will still live on in spirit”. “That’s because any finances that come from here will go towards helping Tiona and the Green Cathedral, that has always been the wish of the congregation,” Irene said.

Starting primary school or high school can be a daunting prospect for children. It can also be a daunting prospect for separated parents, as they need to work together to determine the most appropriate school for their child to attend. This is a decision of parental responsibility. Most parenting Orders give separated parents equal shared parental responsibility. This means that parents must communicate about the issue, and reach agreement. If one parent makes a unilateral decision about which school the child attends, they risk being in breach of the Order.

Parents should have discussions early regarding schooling, and at least 6 months before the enrolment applications are due. During those discussions, be open minded to all possibilities and ideas, and think about the impact on your child of each proposal.

When parents are unable to reach an agreement, there is an expectation that they will attend mediation to try to reach agreement. If this is unsuccessful, and parents still cannot agree, the only option remaining is an application to the Court. These applications are difficult because the Court cannot decide if one school is better than another; it can simply look realistically at the facts before it, and try to determine which option will ultimately be more convenient for the individual child.

In the meantime, while ever the issue remains in dispute, your child is left with the uncertainty of what school they will be attending in the coming year, and is unlikely be able to become excited or make plans with their friends. Save your child this angst, and let them experience the adventure of commencing school or high school by addressing the issue early and realistically, and with an open mind.

A Formal Farewell By Daniel SAHYOUN YEAR 12 students from Bulahdelah Central School celebrated the end of 13 years of schooling at a formal dinner held last week. Dressed in stunning frocks and stylish suits, the students gathered at Bulahdelah Golf Club and posed for hundreds of photographs capturing memories that will last a lifetime. Taylor Garemyn and her friends arrived in style, stepping out of a 1949 Chevrolet driven by her father Andrew. “We thought it was cool getting out of a fancy car,” Taylor said. “It was originally my Pop’s car and now my Dad’s.” The young adults were joined by their parents and school staff for the evening, with a mix of nostalgia and celebration experienced during the formal speeches. Speaking on behalf of the graduating class, Shae Finch, Tamara Gooch and Bianca Mason acknowledged the guidance and assistance

School Thank You By Margie TIERNEY IT takes a community to grow and nurture a school and that was very evident last week when Tea Gardens Public held a ‘Thank You Morning Tea’. “We wanted to say thank you to everyone at our school and the community for helping out throughout 2017,” Principal Mark Clemson said. “It’s great that we’ve got a wonderful community that come in and support our school, whether it be a

scripture teacher, the P&C, the View Club, the Lions Club, the Lionesses, Rotary, Red Cross, Staff, you could keep going on and on,” Mark said. “It helps our kids out and we can’t thank you enough.” To show the School’s appreciation a wonderful spread of home made morning tea delights was enjoyed by the dozens of people who were invited to the ‘thank you’ gathering. And News Of The Area could well have done with a wide-angled lens to capture the joy in the room.

Principal Clemson said, “All of you have been involved in many different ways and the successes of the past year have been achieved with your involvement.’’ Students too have been involved in many community activities over the past 12 months, from Australia Day ceremonies to Anzac Day Memorials. The school’s major fundraiser ‘The Easter Art Show’ would not be possible without the students, volunteers and contributors.

MY PH, my dear man. Have you ever read those ‘What I ate today’ columns? I think they are all telling furphies. Don’t you agree that furphy is a wonderful word? How can a word that conjures up an image of a cute little gonk with downcast eyes be related to deception and trickery? Now, in those ‘What I ate today’ columns in glossy magazines, they always interview supermodels and ballet dancers and C-grade celebrities who write books about paleo diets, and what they are basically saying via their self-righteous meal plan is that we mere mortals are blubber-guts with zero self control. It is hard not to feel slightly pathetic, when you read about someone eating organic goji berries washed down with a kale smoothie for breakfast, a handful of hand-harvested sprouts with vitamin water for lunch and a probiotic drink for dinner, because the poor waif is so fatigued that the thought of cooking a decent meal is beyond them. Everything in moderation is a cliché worth recalling in these times of trouble, Mr PH. There’s no point starving yourself until you turn into a raving lunatic at the local drive-through shouting, “Get me the family pack and make it snappy” and eating it in the shadowy depths of the car park, because you’re starving to death. PS: I don’t think you are cheating on your wife unless your subterfuge involves the woman next door (who also has no willpower). Carpe diem, Jasminda

Nurturing the Nests By Margie TIERNEY

THESE are exciting times for conservationists in the Myall. After weeks of keeping watch, the endangered little Terns have started laying dozens of eggs. “Great news, the little Terns have started laying on the dredge pile at Winda Woppa,” Jill Madden told News Of The Area. The first nests were located a couple of weeks ago, just four scrapes in the sand, each with one egg. Jill Madden is over the moon because locals have

now counted 48 eggs. “The Winda Woppa dredge pile of sand is an ideal site for them to nest but also very open to disturbance from people and dogs.” Last year local birdwatcher Neil Fraser documented 28 fledglings being raised. “This is a great result which really relies on beach goers and dog walkers being careful and vigilant,” Council’s Drew Morris said. With that in mind, Midcoast Council and residents are appealing to all locals and visitors to be very wary where they tread and

Outerphase hits the Bay By Rachael VAUGHAN

OUR Entertainment weekly look at what’s on around town

moves across all areas of the News Of The Area family of newspapers, and this week we’re back in the Bay!

The Seabreeze Hotel in Nelson Bay has a great night planned for anyone heading out next Saturday and looking

for someone to catch up with friends. On Saturday 1 December, the hotel will be hosting ‘Outerphase’ from 8:30pm. Outerphase is a Newcastle, Hunter Valley, Port Stephens and Central Coast Duo which combines the talents of Murray Byfield and Gary Boughton, playing all the great covers from the Rock Classics to present. Gary has worked nationally with acts such as Back2Rock, Diversity and Cybercrystal and brings to the show an amazing guitar and vocal strength. If you combine this with Murray, who delivers lead vocals and guitar, you’re in for a treat. Murray is well known for his vast vocal range, which allows him to cover most musical styles with ease. He has an uncanny ability

to sound like the artist he is covering at the time, impressing audiences up and down the coast. Outerphase caters for any venue, with either a complete acoustic set list for a more laid back atmosphere or a fully sequenced show that can have you dancing all night.

q

Murray and Gary from Outerphase spoke with News Of The Area and said, ‘We are really looking forward to rocking out at the Seabreeze Hotel.” “It’s such a great venue and atmosphere, so we hope to see you all there!”

on his own to compete in the NSW Masters Long Distance Championships at Knox Grammar in Sydney’s north. Not only was he the only entrant from the Myall Club but he came home with a gold medal for the 15 hundred metre Freestyle. “Being the champion that he is,” Valerie Mobbs said. “Chris followed up with a Novocastrians meet on 18 November where he came away with another three gold and a silver medal.” Chris is now ranked fifth nationally in 200 freestyle, fourth nationally in 400 freestyle and fourth nationally in 50m Backstroke in his age group of 75 to 79 years. While Chris was

competing in Sydney and Newcastle, three other swimmers from the Myall travelled up to Port Macquarie for their meet. Chris Lock came away with two firsts and two second places in four events. Sharon Taylor finished with a first, two seconds and a fourth place and Chris Mobbs placed third in both the events he entered. Valerie Mobbs said, “At this meet there were 23 clubs represented, 111 swimmers entered and with just three swimmers Myall Masters still came in 10th place.” “I think this is a credit to the dedication of our coaches and swimmers.”

Croquet Club News

By Constanze HEWETT

MYALL Park Croquet Club continues to run smoothly with an active committee and the few dedicated volunteers always ready to help. Sometimes outside volunteer help is also given so we say a really big ‘Thank You’ to Gordon Rowe for organizing the repair of some of our chairs and our equipment trolleys, and to Jim Murphy for all the help he gave us with spreading the 8 tonne of topsoil over the lawns. This form of help is greatly appreciated as the Club’s male membership is sadly lacking. Monday 20th we welcomed 15 members of Rotary to a fun day of croquet

q

and social activity together with BBQ lunch provided by our caterer Michele Weir and band of helpers. The beautiful weather allowed everyone to enjoy themselves as Graham Dunn (President) summed up in the final speech of the day. Croquet is an outdoor, equal opportunity, social activity mallet sport which, like all others, has different games with various levels of difficulty. They include names like Ricochet, Gateball, Pirates and the more popular Golf and serious Association. Our Club plays Golf on Mondays and Saturdays, Wednesday and Friday are mixed games. Any afternoon, by appointment, is available for

showing new players this interesting game. Anyone wishing to learn, can receive three free days of games or instruction before deciding if it is a sport for them. Wonderful surroundings, company and come when you feel like a game make this an enviable choice. There are also many welcoming Clubs throughout Australia where you can play and meet the locals when travelling. We would particularly like to hear from anyone who understands the games of billiards and/or chess as they will find the Association game an enjoyable challenge. Home Ground By Daniel SAHYOUN

BULAHDELAH Cricket Club will have a load of new equipment this year thanks to a $2,500 grant from the Holden Home Ground Advantage program. “We are only in our second year and are a very small club, so this is a great boost to help set us up,” Team manager Erin Matheson said. Holden’s national funding program has been running since 2014 with the aim of distributing funds to grassroots communitybased sporting clubs. Newcastle Holden Sales Manager Alan Curtis said the local cricket club was one of 25 organisations awarded a grant in the latest funding round. “Initiatives like

this are important to support kids sport, that’s why Holden gets behind it,” Mr Curtis told News of The Area. “It is good to help kids get active and outside exercising.” The new junior cricket team is competing in the Manning River District competition this year and recently celebrated their very first win. “You probably could have heard them all over Bulahdelah, they were very excited with the win,” Erin said. “They have such enthusiasm, they are very encouraging to each other and winning a game has definitely spurred them on.” Erin said the grant will be used to purchase new equipment for both training and competition matches.
