While Dave won’t be leaving Tea Gardens until after Easter, he’s already been out to Broken Hill to get a feel for the area. “It’s 14 hours by road, straight west,” Dave said. “70 kilometres out of Broken Hill there’s a road sign saying you’ve now entered another time zone,” he said with a laugh. “There’s 120 Police Officers stationed out there because it’s such a vast place:
there’s four teams of five and about 18 thousand locals.” Dave and wife Fiona will make Broken Hill their home for at least the next three years. “I’m looking forward to it, it’s been something I’ve wanted to do for a long time.” No word yet on Dave’s replacement to work alongside Senior Constable Rob Coyle.

ChanGinG a Child’s name by Mark Sullivan
TAKING THE LEAD
Some relationships come, and go. Children might have multiple siblings to different fathers and/or mothers, and it is not uncommon for a change to a child’s surname to be contemplated. There can be valid arguments for and against such a change, and in the context of blended families, such matters frequently require determination by Judges in the family courts.

An order to change a child’s name is a parenting order and therefore must only be made in the child’s best interests, after taking into account considerations in s60CC of the Family Law Act. Over the years, cases have also distilled a number of practical factors to be considered when considering the merits of a change. These include:

Call to ensure no Trolling THE NSW Labor Opposition has called on the Premier to guarantee that no other Coalition campaign teams, staffers or MPs had engaged in Facebook trolling during the recent election campaign. It comes as NSW Labor throws its support behind a call by an outgoing Liberal Parliamentarian to expel anyone who knew about the Port Stephens’ Liberal Facebook trolling. Departing Liberal Upper House member Scot MacDonald said this week that the tactic showed “poor judgement” and that anyone linked to the trolling scandal during the recent State Election should be “kicked out of the party”. On Monday the Premier said she wanted to improve the conduct of Parliamentarians in the wake of last week’s Election. NSW Interim Opposition Leader, Penny
Thursday, 4 April, 2019
Sharpe, and Labor MP for Port Stephens, Kate Washington, supported Mr MacDonald’s public statements and urged the Premier to be true to her stated commitment. Senior Liberal Upper House member, Catherine Cusack, became embroiled in the controversy in February after Ms Washington asked Facebook and the Clerk of Parliament to investigate fake Facebook accounts being operated by one of Ms Cusack’s staff members. Ms Sharpe also called on Premier Gladys Berejiklian to guarantee that no other Coalition campaign teams, staffers or MPs had engaged in the behaviour. “Even people from her own side see that there is no room for online trolling and election manipulation from fake Facebook accounts political campaigns,” Ms Sharpe said.

Munchies Café EXPERT
REAL ESTATE
433 Tarean Rd, KARUAH $639,000
“MUNCHIES” is a popular coffee shop & takeaway currently operating breakfast & lunch. A favourite with locals as well as a convenient rest stop for those visitors holidaying or travelling through.
Centrally located opposite the Karuah RSL, the primary school and Jetty Park as well as a short distance away from the public wharf and boat ramp - this one of the best positions in town. The current owners enjoy a good income, but if you were looking to expand - potential exists to create synergies with the local motels, golf clubs, schools, retirement villages, social clubs, community groups and more. What about “Weekend Pizza” nights? or dinner? The cafe area is comfortable, with tables & chairs, lounges, a slow combustion stove and ceiling fans. Potential exists to accommodate more customers with a simple relocation of a screen. There is also an outdoor seating area. Upstairs there is a three bedroom apartment, separate lounge & dining area.
PRESENTATION TO MAXIMISE YOUR PROPERTY’S SALES POTENTIAL
“I’M selling my home. Do I need to buy new furniture to make it look more appealing to buyers?” This is an often-asked question and a relevant one! When you sell your property, it’s important to keep in mind that buyers want to imagine themselves living in your home; their furniture; their lifestyle. So it’s not so much about showing a home that is out of a brochure. Although this is lovely if you can afford it, the most important bit is about presenting a property that is clean and tidy. For example; cobwebs removed, surfaces dusted, carpets vacuumed and steam-cleaned; hard floors washed; toys put away. Bathrooms and kitchens should be spotless and surfaces clear. And a vase or two of bright flowers looks wonderful. Same with the laundry. Buyers don’t need to see dirty washing! Outside should reflect the inside with lawns mowed, gardens neat and tidy, rubbish removed and any doggydoo picked up! R and R Property offers an in-house style service as an integral part of our listing process. Our knowledgeable team can advise you on what you need to do to present your home in the best possible light.
The kitchen has been recently renovated with an aluminium splash-back. The bathroom was also recently renovated; with a rain shower-head, quality tiling and features “metal chequered mate” on the walls. Extras include timber-look venetians, ceiling fans and split system air conditioning. The current owners have retained as many of the original features as possible, including polished floor boards throughout and an original ceiling rose. There are views to the Karuah River and Port Stephens Bay from two of the bedrooms; as well as the living & dining rooms. But the best views are reserved for when you step outside to the deck and take in the river on one side and the Bay from the other. The residence also offers a separate laundry with access to a garden courtyard and parking. This is a unique offering - Freehold residence - 3 bedrooms, bathroom, and a coffee shop/ restaurant, office space; all set on approx 855 sqm of land. Enjoy your own business and live in residence or rent out the upstairs. Buy the freehold and convert to another type of business, residence, office space (STCA). The current owners are flexible and are happy to provide assistance to the new owners. For more information call Century 21 on 02 4997 2554.

Women’s Bowling By Lynda RICHARDS Tea Gardens Women’s Bowls TUESDAY 26th March: The semi final of the Club Championship Major Singles Competition and social bowls. It only took Maynie Roberts 19 ends to demolish Lynda Richards 25 v 8. Karen McPhie had a tougher battle against Lynne Green, their contest went to 28 ends. Lynne took the lead early in the game, by the 14th end it was 12 all. Then Karen nudged ahead holding a 2 shot advantage on the 20th end. On the 21st end Karen gained 3 shots, result 21 v 16. Lynne never gave up it took Karen another 6 ends to
claim victory 26 v 21. Thanks to the Markers Robyn Beaumont and Jo Younghusband and Pat Baker for umpiring. The Final of this event between Karen McPhie and Maynie Roberts is scheduled for Thursday 18th April. Format for social bowls was a game of Pairs, a game of Triples and a game of Fours. A great comeback by Lyn Nightingale, Ingrid Luck, Pam Gilchrist and Judy McGavock who were losing by 7 shots on the 11th end but ultimately only lost by 2 shots, 13 v 15 against Judi Polak, Jan Coomer, Jill McBride and Dot Dallas. A good win for Carol Hayden and Kayelene Pearson 18 v Bev Rhodes and Bette Saillard 10. Francis Betar, Bev
Stephens and Deyonne Page led all the way bowling against Jean Glover, Dale Winter and Elizabeth Kelly winning by 4 shots, 14 v 10. The winners on the day, winning with the highest margin were Carol and Kayelene. It appears Kayelene was a “winner all round” taking home the raffle prize as well. Many thanks to the Myall Bistro and Café for their donation of the raffle prize. Thursday 28th March: Home games for our Grade 4 Pennant Sides. The Grade 4 Yellow side bowled against Mayfield West/Hexham. The opponents proved to be tougher competitors than expected but our ladies added 4 points to their tally. Our Grade 4 Blues bowled well against Fingal Bay and also gained 4 points. Thanks to Kathie Rimmer for umpiring. On Tuesday 2nd April

Police Charity Golf Donations By Margie TIERNEY
funds raised from last year’s event. Organised by Senior Constable Dave Coyle, cheques were handed out to half a dozen groups. “$2,500 went to the Clinic Bus, $1,500 to Meals on Wheels, another $1,000 went to the local junior boxing gym and $500 to both the Tea Gardens Primary
THE legacy of the late officer Norm Webber lives on in the form of his Police Charity Golf Day at the Hawks Nest Course. Last Friday, members of a number of community groups gathered at the Golf Club for a special morning tea and distribution of the
School’s Breakfast Club and the Tea Gardens Karuah junior Cricket Club,” Dave Coyle said. For organisations such as the local Clinic Bus, these community donations are vital as they run their service without any Government funding. “We’re now running our bus, three days a week,
taking clients to medical appointments in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland and Raymond Terrace,” Ann Fowler said. Jenny Kelly from the Red Cross who helps run the Breakfast Club at Tea Gardens Primary was also a grateful recipient. “It’s donations like this that enable us to offer more
than just toast and Weet-bix to our kids every morning,” Jenny said. The donation to the local boxing gym for our youngsters, will help go towards their rent for another year in Hawks Nest. And the funds for our local Meals On Wheels will help create over 14,000 meals every year for more
than 200 regular clients. Meals on Wheels President Dan Holmes was very appreciative of the donation, but said with a wry smile, “Now if we could just find someone to donate a block of land and a few hundred thousand dollars, we could fund some new premises as we’ve outgrown where we are.”
