Generosity and donations just keep going from small town By Ann SCULLY THERE is absolutely no doubt about the generosity in our area and this story focuses on a group of volunteers who run The Centre at Karuah and who were instrumental, earlier this year, in the collection and delivery of children's books which were given to schools Narrabri, North West, New South Wales. Since that time, other deliveries have included blankets, warm

non-perishable food items as well as cleaning products for dishes, clothes or for personal hygiene. Co-ordinator, Hazel Wheeler, told News Of The Area, “As you know the whole area out west is suffering a major drought with very little farming being done and families experiencing homelessness and hunger. “Some whole families are sleeping outside under dead trees and these people are our Aussie brothers and sisters and we should try our best to help in some way,” said Hazel. Once the donations come in to The Centre, out of the goodness of their hearts, Hazel and her husband Les, will load up their truck with all the goods and take the seven hour drive to Narrabri and return whilst at

the same time pay for their own expenses for travel. On arrival at Narrabri, the non-perishable food items will be delivered to the St Vincent de Paul outlet who will then distribute to the needy people in the area. Another stop is at Moree where the goods are dropped at Moree LightHouse Care where residents can come to the centre every Thursday to collect food and other goods. Hazel also said, “Les and I are very happy that we are in a position to be able to do these trips but it still is not enough.” So, if you are able to help, please drop off your goods at The Centre, Karuah or if you would like to speak with Hazel, her contact number is 0428 814 246.

Seeking Marine Park Advisory Committee MEMBER of the NSW Upper House for the Hunter, Taylor Martin is calling for nominations from interested local community members for membership of the Port Stephen-Great Lakes Marine Park Advisory Committee. “The Port Stephen-Great Lakes Marine Park is special area that helps to conserve marine biodiversity, while at the same time providing for many other activities, such as diving, boating, fishing and tourism,” Mr Martin said. “The role of the advisory committee is to provide a voice for local communities and different stakeholder interest groups.

“The committees are not decision-making bodies, but provide important local advice to the NSW Government on marine park management, including local issues and opportunities.” Mr Martin said that the advisory committee can include up to 12 members and alternates with skills, expertise and knowledge in areas such as Aboriginal culture, fishing, local government, boating, tourism, marine conservation, marine science, to ensure the wide range of community values can be considered. “The committees are not decision-making bodies, but provide important local advice

to the NSW Government on marine park management, including local values, threats, issues and opportunities,” Mr Martin said. “Successful nominees would be appointed as members of the committee for a term of up to four years. “Members of the community with relevant skills and experience in one or more of these areas of interest are encouraged to apply. Nominations close 22 September 2019.” For more information or to download a nomination form, visit https://www.marine. nsw.gov.au/nsw-marine-estate/get-involved/ advisory-committees.

Gordon Grainger met with Shadow Ministers, Kate Washington and Jenny Aitchison and the oyster industry. The loss of many marine filed this Report FROM Page 1

Stephens oyster farming industry, manager of Natural Systems MidCoast Council, president of the Tea Gardens Slipway, consultant representing further development within the area and Councillor Roberts representing our community. Kate Washington is now the Shadow for Environment and Planning, Jenny Aitchison, Shadow for Primary Industries. Their portfolios include most of the issues we face in ensuring the Myall River is kept in a pristine condition. We felt it was important they were informed of the past and hopefully enlist their help in untangling the bureaucratic knots we currently face. It was fully understood that this meeting was the subject of the river maintenance and did not include the issue of Jimmys Beach erosion, apart from the common denominator. They need sand, we have it at the entrance of the natural entrance. As Ms. Aitchison was not familiar with the area, the opportunity was taken to conduct a tour of the area and a visit to the STS. Presentations were made by the participants and the following points were highlighted.

MRAG · MRAG explained the history of the area, displaying old charts defining Myall Point. The early errors in creating a false channel (now known as the Corrie or Navigation channel) and the buildings allowed on Myall Point, subsequently blown away in 1927. · Maintenance dredging was conducted for over 100 years and ceased in 1998. Subsequent decline in river quality due to gradual closure of the eastern or natural entrance. · Formation of MRAG in 2008 to raise community awareness of probable causes of diseased fish, increased turbidity, blue green algae and low salinity leading to the closure of

species including dolphins and black swans. · With the then State Opposition and Great Lakes Council help, committees and studies were conducted, leading to the decision to dredge the entrance. · Council was elected to manage the project and it took over 2 years to gain approval from 13 Government Agencies. A lack of single management within the Government Agencies lead to excessive costs in both finance and manpower as well as lack of commitment. · Funding finally obtained from State Government, Council and the Federal Govt. (Ramsar commitment Corrie Is.) Dredging conducted in 2015, not completed due to restriction on time place by the bird watching group. · Sand migration is now closing that entrance and unless a new program is undertaken, the river will revert to the backwater it became. COUNCIL MANAGEMENT · For each dredging campaign, Council is required to obtain approvals from the following Govt. agencies. Several divisions within each of the following. OEH, Primary Industries, Crown Lands. Then, NP&WL, Marine Parks, Fisheries, EPA, Maritime Services, Fed Govt., Port Stephens Council. Plus, Aboriginal Land Council and bird watching groups. · These approvals can take 2 years to obtain as there is no single management to oversee the project. Those approvals are for each single project. Follow up- programs, same site, same objectives, need to undergo the same approval process. · The bureaucratic restrictions add a considerable cost in time, manpower and finance. OYSTER INDUSTRY · 16 farms provided employment and contributed to a $9mio industry within the

Tea Gardens precinct. All were lost when salinity levels decreased to 7ppm from a normal 28ppm. · Post dredge, there has been a return of 6 farms, again under threat should the river quality deteriorate. COMMUNITY · The Myall River is considered a lifeblood to the residents and businesses in our twin towns. · Current population is 3500, with an anticipated growth of 2000 over the next 10 years. · Tourist accommodation is 820K bed nights per annum and contribute $75mio to the local economy · A decline in river quality will be reflected in the economic health of the towns. TEA GARDENS SLIPWAY · The recent attempt to close the slipway by Crown Lands and Council has been withdrawn and activities allowed to continue with some minor changes. · Community involvement underscored the necessity for this operation to continue for emergencies and a convenience for boat owners on the north shore of Port Stephens. · Improvements are being undertaken in repositioning and effluent removal, costing up to $600K and the Association is seeking funding from State Govt. THE FUTURE · Approval applications for dredging the natural entrance need to be undertaken in near future. · Funding for the project must not be protracted. · Political influence to appoint a one authority to oversee dredging and similar projects within the Port. Approvals to remain in force for a period of at least 10 years. · To assist the Slipway in obtaining a grant for completion of improvements. If you are under 30 you probably don’t think you need a Will or to worry about ‘legal stuff’. Consider this, were you brought up in a single parent household with no contact with Dad? If so, without a Will, if you were to pass away, Mum and Dad would equally inherit your money and your things (assuming you have no partner and no children). What’s the point, though, do you have anything to give Mum anyway? In fact, you may have more than you think: superannuation often includes insurance. That barista job you did full-

time for a few months, may mean a significant lump sum is payable on your death (so long as you kept a minimum balance in your super fund). Plus, if you are about to go overseas to some remote place, do you want Mum to be able to look after your legal stuff whilst you are away and if you take some amazing pictures of your holiday or do an amazing blog of your trip, do you want to give Mum the best chance of accessing your digital data if anything happens to you? Give your Mum a break and sort out your legal affairs.

Moderate water restrictions in force MODERATE water restrictions come in force across the MidCoast region from Monday 2 September – with MidCoast Council warning that tighter restrictions follow the Created:could A & BinFoley coming weeks. Creator No: 12394 “We’re asking everyone Gaynor across the Qxpress: MidCoast to ensure they are complying with Checked: Noel these restrictions, which are mandatory,” said Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services, Rob Scott. “The weather forecasts and our predictions of water usage indicate that we may need to increase restrictions, possibly as early as October.” Moderate restrictions mean that you can water outside using hand-held hoses, for one hour every second day, before 9am or after 4pm. Garden irrigation systems may only be used for 15 minutes as part of the one hour allocation. If your house number is an even number, water on the even days of the month; for houses with odd numbers, water on the odd days of the month, and there's no watering at all on the 31st day of any month. This includes topping up home pools. In addition, use buckets, with trigger hose rinsing for washing cars and boats. If possible, always wash vehicles and flush boat motor engines on grassed areas - this will help keep your lawn alive!

You’re really there to tell the world how fantastic your life is while you search for signs of mental breakdown and/or Botox in your former classmates. Seriously, my best advice is to just grit your teeth and endure it. Your school friends already know you. They all remember the time you vomited on the school bus and that unfortunate moment when you pashed the PE teacher (don’t stand, don’t stand so, don’t stand so close to me . . .). No amount of makeup or styling or subterfuge is going to make them see you in a light other than the one you created all those years ago. Just enjoy the moment, chat to everyone you can, and be thankful that you won’t have to endure another get-together for many years, if ever. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Slipway to Focus on gaining Support

By Ann SCULLY SINCE the last report concerning progress at Tea Gardens Slipway, the facility has been able to get back to full operation in late July and five boats have now been slipped. As part of getting back into operation, a “bund” wall to catch all water runoff from washing boats has been built so that this water cannot enter the river then this wastewater is then pumped into tanks to be later disposed by the local wastewater contractor. While these arrangements are effective, they are not the final solution for the Association to achieve their environmental compliance targets. “They are at best an interim arrangement to keep our community Slipway operating without the potential to affect the river,” said Paul Bendy, the Slipway Association’s President. “We understand that our Development Application with Council

has been signed off by the various interested external Government agencies, so now Council can process the DA through their system. “Once we have an approved DA from Council, which we expect at any time now, we can then focus on gaining the support in the way of additional funding to assist with the upgrade necessary for such a facility.” There is widespread support for the slipway to be upgraded, both within the various levels

of government and the community. When the upgrade works are completed, Tea Gardens Slipway will be able to continue to service the area in the role of vessel maintenance, but more importantly, as a marine emergency response facility, protecting the Myall Lakes and River areas. The Tea Gardens Slipway Association will keep the community informed of their upgrade progress through News Of The Area.

Hire Car business takes off By Ann SCULLY ONE local, newly formed car hire business has seen dramatic growth in recent times due to the fact that its customers in our region have supported its services whilst other businesses in our area have seen a downturn in trade and in some cases, sadly, have had to close their doors. Tea Gardens Hire Cars have been fully supported by residents from Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest and Pindimar using

q Wheelchair Passenger, Norma Glenn, from Peter Sinclair Gardens.

the car fleet for local drop offs as well as taking advantage of the fantastic service to airports. Owner, John Cohen, told News Of The Area, “My business has grown because the community has supported our services and we have been able to increase the number of cars in the fleet as well as adding on extra services for the region.” Regular wheelchair customer, Norma Glenn, cannot speak highly enough of the service and told News Of The Area, “This is a

wonderful business that is very impressive, professional and reliable. “I feel very safe going up and down the ramp to get in and out of the vehicle and would not hesitate to recommend the services of Tea Gardens Hire Cars. Norma also said, “The last time I was in the vehicle, John even drove me to Bennetts Beach to take a look at the surf before returning me to Peter Sinclair Gardens.” Well done John!

Jeff Carryer makes a return to Real Estate

R & R Property Bulahdelah is forging ahead with the return of Jeff Carryer. Despite having ‘retired’ two years ago when Denise Haynes of R&R Property Bulahdelah and Stroud purchased Jeff’s Great Lakes Realty, the local real estate identity never lost his passion for property marketing. Following the sale of his business, Jeff and Denise remained close, often catching up to discuss the property market and local trends. It’s not surprising then that an opportunity to take on the role of Licensee in Charge of the Bulahdelah office proved too good to resist. A Bulahdelah resident for 35 years and with 20 years in the real estate industry, Jeff’s wealth of knowledge of the local market and industry trends is indeed enviable. Covering both Rural and Residential Sales and working with Bulahdelah office’s Sales Agent Debra Thomson is something Jeff, who

q

has already taken up his role, relishes. “I love the human element of the real estate industry; working with Denise, her talented team and such wonderful clients; making their property dreams come true,” Mr Carryer said. “It doesn’t get much better than that.” Jeff said, “I am thrilled with the way Denise is taking the Bulahdelah office forward. R&R Property’s focus on customer service is without peer and to be able to play a hands-on role working with Denise in forging ahead is extremely exciting.” Ms Haynes said, “We have a terrific, dedicated team of highly skilled locals.” “This is a very exciting time for R&R Property and with a combined thirty-five years of experience in the industry, it’s very clear that our clients are in ‘safe hands’,” Ms Haynes told News Of The Area.

FOR the first time, the Hawks Nest Beachside ProAm will be conducted over two days, Friday 13 and Saturday 14 September at Hawks Nest Golf Club and Club spokesperson, David Gilbert told News Of The Area, “The two day format was only possible because of the wonderful support from the business community. “The total prize pool for the event of $22,500 has attracted a quality field of sixty eight professional golfers including defending champions Callan O’Reilly and Leigh McKechnie as well as Matthew Millar, Tim Hart and James Nitties with household names Craig Parry, Andre Stolz and Peter Lonard who have also entered the event. Mr Gilbert also said, “The club is enormously grateful for the support from naming rights sponsor Hawks Nest Beachside, Gold sponsor Burtons Automotive and silver sponsors Ray White Tea Gardens, Tile Rescue, Palm Lake Resort, Yamaha,

Toro Australia, Supercharge Batteries, RSL LifeCare and Wakeford Securities.” A highlight of the two days will be the Par 3, ‘Nearest the Pin Shootout’ which will be held under lights after the completion of the Pro-Am whereby in the shootout, the professionals will compete for $1500.00 together with a number of selected local amateur golfers who will compete for $600.00 worth of prizes. Members, guests and

visitors are welcome to watch the quality golf which will be on display over the two days as well as to take in the spectacle of the ‘Shootout under Lights’ on the evening of Saturday, 14 September. There are still some positions available in the Pro-Am field over the two days and golfers wishing to play on either or both days should contact the Office or the Pro Shop during business hours on 4997 0145.
