Fighting Jimmys Beach Erosion

By Adrienne INGRAM LOCAL Bitou Busters have been playing their part in fighting the erosion at Jimmys Beach by working to

AN annual charity event was hosted by the unstoppable Bec Tansey at Club Charlestown last Saturday night with the evening taking the format of a Trivia Night to raise funds for Jenny’s Place. Since 1977, Jenny’s Place has been helping women and children in the Newcastle area to find safety from domestic violence, by providing accommodation for women who are at risk of homelessness or who are experiencing domestic violence, and also provide support and information about services to keep women and children safe. Four years ago, Bec Tansey who used to work for her parents who owned a book distribution business in Tea Gardens, in an attempt to meet other Mums in the community, formed an online parents group, Newcastle Hunter Mums (NHM) which now boasts a huge membership of 14,500 with this number growing steadily by the hundreds each month. Bec told News of the Area, “Over the past four years, the NHM has provided support to countless families and is widely recognized within the community, and for the past two

Cars Vandalised FROM Page 1 that I took of three vehicles that had been damaged last week at Tea Gardens. They had been left at the “Car Yard” at the intersection of Myall Street and Myall

Quays Boulevard. All vehicles had been there for sale and had been left on site overnight unfortunately. Every window has been broken in all vehicles with some of the mirrors also smashed, the “musso” being the worst This of course is just an act of wonton vandalism and something that we do not

want, anywhere let alone in Tea Gardens. There are a lot of cars displayed here over the holidays and other times for sale, but I suspect that it would be good if they were not left overnight in future. Geoff Cash Tea Gardens

On 28 December 2018 the Land and Environment Court of New South Wales decided the case of Hourigan v Howard [2018] NSWLEC 1686. The applicants claimed plants along the fence line obstructed sunlight to their property and sought a remedy from the court. The Trees (Disputes Between Neighbours) Act 2006 No 126 [NSW] (“the Act”) empowers the court to “remedy, restrain or prevent a severe obstruction” (Part 2A) of sunlight to a window, or any view from a dwelling (section 14B). The particular plants were found to have an average height of 2.5 m, with some new shoots reaching above 2.5 m. Therefore, Part

2A of the Act applied. Relevantly, in winter only part of the lower section of the affected windows was obstructed; there was no obstruction of sunlight for the remainder of the year. Consequently, the court concluded the obstruction of sunlight was “not severe” and therefore the court could not make any orders relating to the offending trees. If you are considering an application to “remedy, restrain or prevent a severe obstruction” to sunlight to your windows or a view from your house caused by trees on your neighbour’s property, the height of the offending trees must exceed 2.5 m and the obstruction of sunlight must be severe.

Community Conversations The answers to the questions raised during the conversation and the community priorities can be found at www.midcoast.nsw.gov.au/Community/ Community-Conversations-andFeedback It is no surprise that a hydrotherapy pool was the number one priority as this has been requested by the community and local councillors for many years. Southern Area Reference Group (SARG) A & B prior Foley An initiative, Created: that I implemented to amalgamation, was Foreshore Creator No:the12393 reference group, which advised council Qxpress: Gaynor on the strategy and implementation Checked: Noel of the riverfront at Tea Gardens. The committee continued through the amalgamation period and it was so successful, that council morphed and expanded the group into SARG. This is an advisory group consisting of peak community associations, from Bulahdelah, TGHN, NAC, Pindimar, Bundabah and Winda Woppa. The purpose of SARG is to advise the council on the strategic issues in the southern area. Hopefully, this will encourage residents to discuss needs at their various community groups and present a united front. Too often isolated and disparate views are presented to council which do not necessarily reflect the views of the local community.

2019 Palm Lake Resort/ WBNSW State Carnival SPORT

Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling By Lynda RICHARDS A "BIG week of bowling" for our Club. Four teams (16 bowlers) headed north for the 2019 Palm Lakes Resort/ WBNSW State Carnival.

The biggest State Carnival ever conducted with a record number of entries. There was 20 sections, 268 teams, 1072 bowlers. From these numbers only 18 teams went through to the Post Sectional Finals and I am pleased to say that a team from TGWBC accomplished this, the first team in the history of our Club to do so. Francis Betar, Judi Polak, Bev Rhodes and Pat Baker did our Club proud against their opponent Merrylands. At the beginning of the contest it was "neck to neck" then Merrylands gained 5 shots on one end but our ladies didn't give up adding a 4 points to

Please support the advertisers within the News Of The Area

their tally, narrowing the gap to just 3 shots. Unfortunately these finals are only 13 ends and the Merrylands team won 15 v 9, it could have been a different story if 18 ends had to be bowled. I have to report that Merrylands went on to win this State Carnival defeating all of their other opponents by much more than 6 shots. Well done to Robyn Beaumont, Lorraine Murphy, Maynie Roberts and Kayelene Pearson for coming 2nd in their section, just losing 2 out of 6 games. Lynda Richards, Robyn Webster, Deyonne Page and Lynne Green, won 4 out of 6 but came in 4th in their section. A great effort from Jeanette Emmett, Bette Saillard, Dot Dallas and Dale Cameron. A great result from our Club competing against much bigger Clubs. Bowls continued as usual for our other members. On Tuesday 28th May, 2 games of

Triples and a 10 end Single match, 3 players each taking a turn as Marker. Sheril Johnson winning the Singles 17, second Pam Gilchrist 15 and coming third Ingrid Luck 11. A big win for Maureen Campbell, Christine Fossey and Dale Winter 26 v Lyn Nightingale, Lily Smith and Karen Green 13. A closer contest between Leona Clissold, Jean Glover and Sandra Leisemann 17 v Irene Roberts, Dawn Jones and Leslie Kibble 21. The winner by a draw was Sheril Johnson. On Thursday 30th May 2 games of Pairs a win for Margaret Wigwam and Jean Glover 13 v Liv Everingham and Pam Gilchrist 8. Ingrid Luck and Bev Dunn led all the way defeating Ann Remment and Lyn Nightingale 12 v 9. Coming events: Minor Singles commencing Tuesday 4th June. Annis Young Competition commencing 20th June.

Break Your Age Challenge ASK THE

REAL ESTATE

EXPERT

Can I buy property with my superannuation funds? THIS is a common question, to which I always answer with referring the client to their accountant, but here is a very brief and general overview. Purchasing this way is a possibility through establishing a self-managed superannuation fund (SMSF). Members combine their superannuation accounts and use them to purchase assets. Since 2007 SMSF’s have also been able to borrow to help fund the purchase of property. Like any entity that owns property the SMSF collects the rent and is responsible for the associated costs such as interest, council rates and insurances. As the sole purpose of superannuation is to fund retirement, there are limitations, which include: Members of the fund & their associates (eg family members) cannot live or stay in the property. You will need to have enough funds to pay the deposit, stamp duty and related costs. Ensuring the fund has adequate cash flow to meet loan repayments and expenses. Tightening of lending policies by financial institutions may make achieving finance approval difficult. I am not an accountant and therefore this advice is general in nature and you should always seek financial advice from financial experts for your circumstances. Hope this helps Denise

THROW away your golf handicap, your age is now your new handicap and the question is, “Can You Break Your Age?” The long weekend in June sees the inaugural staging of the “Break Your Age Challenge” at Hawks Nest Golf Club on Sunday 9 June and this event format, the first of its kind in New South Wales, if not Australia, has the support of NSW Golf who have agreed to promote the event through their social media outlets. Whether you are a 65 year old who is capable of shooting a sub-par round or an 87 year old who can still shoot 85 off the stick… this event is for you. David Gilbert, Director of Hawks Nest Golf Club told News of the Area, “The event provides an exciting opportunity for golfers, male or female, aged between their mid sixties through to their nineties. “On our own Club Honours Board, there are four or five golfers who have been

Well done Men By Esther DIGBY Hawks Nest Bridge Club HAWKS Nest Bridge Club (HNBC) has just held another of its very successful Sunday social events by way of lunch for members and their partners and friends followed by a Bridge session. This month however, was a bit different! In honour of Mother’s Day, the men provided the catering and served lunch and what a great job they did. A fabulous selection of soups, fruit platter and cheese board delighted diners before Bridge players settled down to a relaxed afternoon of Bridge in the wonderful modern Blubhouse. Special thanks also to Bea Treharne without whose efforts this monthly event would not happen. HNBC meets twice a week on Monday evenings and Friday afternoons.

New members are always welcome and lessons are held during the year for those who are new to B__ridge.

All entrants must have a GA handicap and will be required to provide evidence of their age on the day. David further added, “To add spice and variation to the weekend, the Grey Nomads Cup, a four person Ambrose for golfers over the age of 50 years , has been re-scheduled for Friday 7 June and will provide a good variety of opportunity to make this weekend a bit unique for the club as well as providing a further opportunity for those playing on the Sunday to familiarize themselves with our golf course.” Of course none of the above would be possible without the generous support of Palm Lake Resort who has sponsored not only the Grey Nomads Cub but also this exciting new opportunity the Break Your Age Challenge. Entry forms are available on the Hawks Nest Golf Club Website, hawksnestgolfclub. com.au or telephone the office on 4997 0145.
