AFTER twenty-three years of owning and operating two pharmacies in our twin towns of Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens, Graeme Hackworthy has sold both businesses and is currently assisting the new owner across a two week handover which commenced on Monday, 28 October 2019. News Of The Area asked Graeme how he felt about his retirement and he said, “It is time for me to have a new life and to finally do some of the things that I have not had the time to do whilst being involved in the running of the businesses.” “I have thoroughly enjoyed looking after all the locals who have supported both pharmacies over the

Hany told News Of The Area, “Working in small villages like Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens is so very different from working in the bigger cities so we will take time to develop personal relationships with our customers and take it slowly at first.” He went on to say, “When new owners take over a business, you need to sit back and learn about the dynamics of that business

of the soldiers in WW1. The Grandstand at the showground has a roll of honour which has been duplicated at the newer Stroud ANZAC Memorial in the township of Stroud. The event is being delivered by the Stroud District Historical Society and will see the year 5 and 6 students attend a service at the Showground. Past Mayor of Great Lakes John Chadban will be delivering the address. He was born and bred in Stroud and has recently visited the Western Front where many died fighting the Germans. He will be able to give the students a firsthand account of his experience on the battle fields on which his ancestors from Stroud served. The service will include a minutes silence at 11am. Rodney Gorton, President of the Stroud Historical Society told News Of The Area, “After the service we will have games for the children to play, that reflect the games that children would have been playing in 1918. “They will also enjoy a sausage sizzle which is being provided by the Stroud Men’s

Shed,” he said. This is the first time that the Historical Society has delivered this type of memorial service for Remembrance Day and it is hoped that it will be repeated in future years and potentially opened to a wider audience. Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest service will commence at the cenotaph from 10.30am. The event will be MC’d by the RSL Sub Branch President Terry Munright and the guest speaker is Mal Mortem who has recently retired from service and comes from one of the pioneering families of the Tea Gardens region. Jenny Ross-Henry of the Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest RSL Sub-Branch told News of The Area, “We are looking forward to Remembrance Day and we will be selling badges at Coles the week before.” The service will be concluded by a morning tea served by the RSL Ladies Auxiliary. In Karuah the commemorations of Remembrance Day will commence at 10.45am at the memorial which will be followed by drinks for the veterans back at the Karuah RSL Club. News Of The Area wishes Graeme a happy, healthy and exciting retirement and also extends congratulations and support to Hany, Manuel and John in their new venture.
High Water Restrictions
WITH Level 3 Very High water restrictions is confirmed from Monday 11 November despite the recent rain. Very High (Level 3) water restrictions mean that you can water outside using hand-held hoses, for ten minutes every second day, before 9am or after 4pm. If your house number is an even number, water on the even days of the month; for houses with odd numbers, water on the odd days of the month, and there's no watering at all on the 31st day of any month. There is now a total ban on all sprinklers and garden irrigation systems, and topping up swimming pools. In addition, use buckets, with trigger hose rinsing for washing cars and boats, as part of your ten minute allocation. If possible, always wash vehicles and flush boat motor engines on grassed areas - this will help keep your lawn alive! Outdoor cleaning of driveways, paved areas, windows, walls and roofs can only be undertaken using buckets. More information: www.midcoast.nsw. gov.au/waterrestrictions

Driver Reviver opening

A DRIVER Reviver kiosk was officially opened on Sunday 19 October, 2019. The Lions of Bulahdelah have for many years provided Driver Reviver services for motorists travelling the Pacific Highway. That involved towing a heavy purpose built caravan out to Brown’s Flat every morning and back to Bulahdelah each night. Six months ago, the Lions decided to build a permanent structure, a kiosk, at the site. It was funded by an anonymous donor who left a bequest to the Lions club of Bulahdelah. “It has made such a difference,” said Lions President Judy Dixon. ”and has lifted a heavy workload on all our volunteers.” The work was outsourced and the finished facility is very professional. The volunteers and the drivers love it. Judy said, “The Lions cover shifts at the beginning and end of the school holidays and the Easter Weekend.” The facility is also opened over the Christmas Break, and holiday breaks and long weekends. “We are so grateful for our volunteers and their commitment to service the kiosk,” said Judy. The facility was officially opened by Allan McCormack the national Director for Driver Reviver. The function was attended by Rhonda McCormick, RMS Representatives and Bulahdelah Lions and Driver Reviver Volunteers. “We are very supportive of the work the Lions of Bulahdelah do,” said Mr McCormack. “This is a very impressive facility and will provide a great stop for fatigued drivers. That reduces the road toll so it is a very vital service,” he said.

Pindimar and Bundabah update By Peter ECONOMOS Pindimar Bundabah Community Association
WE previously advised locals and visitors to drive carefully on Pindimar and local roads. There have been two vehicle rollovers within a day of each other, one trying to avoid wildlife the other due to poor visibility at the Pindimar Bundabah turn off, we urge you to take care. Lot of interest taken in recent local honey tasting of honey from Victoria and NSW. All the honeys scored between 6.00 and 6.70 out of 10. They were Mixed Blossom, Mountain Harvest, Iron Bark, Red Stringy Bark, Kamarooka Mallee, Red Gum and Bloody Good a blend of pure honeys.
Location of the Fire Danger Indication Sign still remains an issue as its present location on Myall Way does not adequately serve the needs of the resident ratepayers of the area. Prior suggested locations on Myall Way to serve the majority, have received a negative approach and fallen on deaf ears, however the Association will continue to pursue this issue. A lot of road patching /repairs required, some of the work done in Clarke Street South Pindimar is not up to standard, consequently resident/ratepayers are questioning whether they are getting value for their rate dollar. PBCA have given Council Engineering Dept. a list of issues which they are addressing however, the lack of funds and Councils backlog of work appear to be hampering progress. A presentation on the restoration of South Pindimar Beach and Visions for the area will be made to Council in the New Year.

In (Dowsett v King [2019] NSWSC 1459) a fairly typical scenario unfolded. Siblings quarrelled over Mum’s money whilst Mum was still alive. Mum, aged 89 years, had 4 children. She had been very close to one daughter. She had transferred real estate to her. Evidence from bank accounts also showed that $140,000 had been transferred from Mum’s account to the daughter’s account. Legal proceedings were commenced by the son (in Mum’s name) seeking that the property be held on trust for Mum (effectively transferred back to her) and also that the $140,000 be repaid. Evidence revealed that Mum had seen a solicitor about transferring the real estate to the daughter and had made a statement at the time of the transfer (an Affidavit) explaining her reasons for the transfer.
The Judge was satisfied that Mum was properly legally advised and knew what she was doing. The $140,000 was a different story. In earlier Tribunal proceedings the daughter had agreed that she was “holding the money” for Mum. The Judge was not persuaded that the $140,000 was a gift. He held that the daughter’s admission in the Tribunal proceedings was critical. Mum’s Will was not consistent with a gift. Overall, he found there was insufficient reason for the Mum to so greatly prefer the daughter above her other three children. The Judge ordered the $140,000 to be repaid plus interest. Clearly it is important to “pick the battle” since the son lost the property argument. However, Judges will listen if the evidence is there and the case is presented appropriately.

Knitting With Purpose Skatepark final plans are By Heather SHARP
ACTIVITIES like yarn bombing, the interest in homemade items, and an interest in living sustainably have all contributed to knitting’s profile rise in recent years. What was once considered, although the reality was different, the realm of grandmothers, the image of knitting has had a radical makeover. This has not gone unnoticed by the students at St Joseph’s Primary School, Bulahdelah. With the assistance of a volunteer, Mrs Jan Peeters, the students formed a learn to knit club this year. Guided by her expertise, the students learnt their new craft by knitting squares. Mrs Peeters told News Of The Area, “Rather than only creating something for themselves, the students decided to combine their efforts to make a knitted rug for someone in need.” Once completed, they decided to donate the rug to Wrap With Love.
This not-for-profit was started in 1992 and since that time has provided more than 414 000 knitted rugs for people all over the world. They are donated to people, especially to children and families, who experience poverty or natural disasters and are all created by volunteers. Mrs Peeters said, “Today a beautiful rug knitted with great care and devotion by the children attending St Joseph’s school knitting club was presented to Mrs Mary Leafe representing Wrap With Love.” “Mary spoke to the children about the organisation and showed some photos of children receiving their rugs.” The students told Mrs Leafe about how much they enjoy the knitting club and want to keep knitting for a cause. If you would like to know more about Wrap With Love and how you can knit and donate a rug or just squares phone Mrs Peeters on 02 8399 3000 for more information.

MIDCOAST Council has finalised plans for a new skatepark and is inviting the community along to a barbecue and to view the final design plans. Bulahdelah Lions Club raised an enormous $181,000 for this project, and together with $79,000 from MidCoast Council and $50,000 from the Australian Government’s Building our Future fund, local skaters will soon have their very own impressive skate park, located at Mountain Park.
“We’ll be presenting the final design for the skate park on the day to provide an opportunity for the community to ask any questions in regards to the new facility,” said Council’s Manager of Community Spaces, Recreation and Trades, Dan Aldridge. “Due to the Bulahdelah Lions Club’s amazing contribution to the project, this skatepark will be one of the best in the MidCoast region.” Everyone is invited to come along to the (Alum) Mountain Park on Tuesday 12 November from 3.30pm to 5pm, enjoy a sausage sizzle, view the design and ask the project team any questions.
Rotary Raffle raises over $2000
By Ann SCULLY
EVEN though there was a dramatic change in the weather during the afternoon, the Myall River Festival was a spectacular success with the Rotary Myall Coast stall inundated with generous and caring locals and visitors in support of their efforts in raising funds for the drought bound farmers. Rotary raised more than $2,000 in ticket sales on the day with their latest major raffle offering the lucky winner a $5,000 open order on our local travel agent, Altitude Travel with the option of the prize being spent on the winner’s dream trip at one time or being spent across two or more smaller trips.
Please support the advertisers within the News Of The Area
Second prize is a Smart TV with the third being a “Dinner for Two” voucher at Mumms on the Myall Seafood Restaurant. President of Rotary, Ian McKenzieSmith, told News Of The Area, “With only 650 tickets being sold in this raffle and the tickets being $20.00, the prizes are very tempting. “There are still tickets on sale at the Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest Shopping Centres and at the rate at which they are being snapped up, the raffle should be drawn in time for Christmas. Ian went on to say, “On behalf of the Rotary Club, I would like to thank everyone for their continued support of our fundraising efforts especially in the name of Drought Relief.”

News Of The Area
Southern Area News By Gordon GRAINGER Southern Area Report THE Reference Group met on Friday 1 November chaired by Councillor Roberts and attended by Council engineers and representatives from North Arm Cove, Pindimar Bundabah, Bulahdelah, Progress Assn and Myall River Action Group. Council reminds us of the forthcoming community event as a follow up to the
newsofthearea.com.au
meeting earlier this year where important issues were tabled. Find out the results emanating from that meeting and be prepared to voice your priorities for the following year. The meeting will be held at the Baptist Church Tea Gardens on 26 November. Council is also aware of a desire to achieve greater pedestrian and mobility access, with improved footpath and cycleway connections. This ambition is Shire wide and Council have appointed a specialised consultant, Stantec to undertake an independent review. Your input is vital to develop a Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan (PAMP) and Council urges this community to be part of this initiative. A community meeting has been scheduled at the Baptist Church Tea Gardens on Thursday 5 December at 6pm and all are urged to attend. Should
you not be able to attend on the night, you can access www.midcoast.nsw.gov. au/PAMP and complete a short survey. This facility will be open from Monday 18 November. A number of other issues were raised, of which the following will be of interest. · The residents of the Dunshea Estate have been reporting serious accident potential on the corner of Penn Drive and Myall Street. The problem has been trees planted on the median strip, obstructing drivers’ views on oncoming traffic. Council were required to follow a lengthy protocol and we are pleased to report the sigh of relief from those residents when the trees were removed this week. · Council have arranged an inspection and much needed repair and improvement to the Moira Pde. boat ramp. We are still on the waiting list for upgrades to the ramps in Tea Gardens.
· The lack of rubbish bins in Hawks Nest is recognised, however garbage removal seems to be a law unto its’ own and the bin situation will remain as is for the foreseeable future. · The Council owned property on Myall St and designated as a future car park is still some time away. Plans have been drawn up and the lack of toilet facilities was discussed at length. Council are reluctant to install that amenity due cost and maintenance, whereas we argue that such a facility is needed to cater for the growing tourist trade. To be continued · The Rural Fire Service has reported missing and unworkable fire hydrants throughout the area. Council will follow up the important matter, particularly in the face of a potential severe fire season The next meeting is scheduled for Friday 6 December.
Shared office space venture for local business owners
q
TEA GARDENS is joining the new world trend towards sharing office space. Sharing spaces is a fastgrowing industry from the long-embraced practice of sharing homes on Airbnb and via holiday agencies to sharing driveways as a car space, house sharing there are so many options. Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Properties and Myall Coast Legal have now bought a fresh new approach to the idea of sharing space to Tea Gardens with the recent opening of their new corner office location on the corner of Myall and Maxwell Streets. Dylan Tennyson, Principal of Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Properties said, “We wanted to create a clean and fresh environment for
Charmian Seil and Dylan Tennyson.
our established and future clients and saw a natural fit to bring our offices into a shared office space.” Charmian Seil, Principal Partner of Myall Coast Legal said it is a very good fit. “Dylan and I have worked on various matters together and certainly the idea of having a law firm and real estate agent in the same space will provide a more convenient way to access conveyancing services,” said Ms Seil. “After completing my Master of Laws majoring in Wills and Estates in May this year, I am also looking forward to providing premium wills and estates services to residents. We are excited to bring our existing formerly mobile practices into the town and
provide a location where the community can easily access our services.” Dylan Tennyson of Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Properties has successfully sold a number of properties already since he established his own agency and will continue to service this community with his enthusiastic fresh approach to real estate. Dylan’s office hours are 9am until 5pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 1pm on Saturday, however, as an eager young professional you are certain to also see him in the office outside these times. Myall Coast Legal will be open from 9am to 3pm Monday to Friday and will continue to provide a mobile service to residents unable to travel to the office and open outside those hours by appointment.

Cricketers represent Hunter Region By Ann SCULLY
THE NSW PSSA Schools State Cricket Carnival was held in Wollongong from 14 to 18 October 2019 and James McCarthy from Tea Gardens Public School and Thomas Long from Karuah Public School represented the Hunter Region Primary Schools at this carnival. Both boys had been selected earlier in the year when they trialled at Maitland against sixtyfour other keen competitors for the twelve team spots to represent the Hunter Region at the PSSA titles. James and Thomas both play for the local cricket club, the Karuah Tea Gardens District Cricket Club in the Maitland District. Col McCarthy, James dad, told News Of The Area, “These State titles drew players from private
independent, catholic and state primary schools with the talent pool at the carnival being nothing short of outstanding with some of these boys heading onto state and international selection in the future.” “For such a small club we managed to have two players selected which was an amazing effort by both James and Thomas.” James was selected for his medium fast bowling and Thomas as a leg spin bowler for the Hunter team with both boys playing in the four games held during the course of the carnival, acquitting themselves very well. James took two wickets from twenty three overs conceding 2.78 per over and Thomas four wickets from twenty seven overs conceding 3.44 runs per over. They both batted as well during the carnival with limited opportunity at the crease with
James getting sixteen runs at an average of four per innings and Thomas four runs at an average of one. Both boys were selected for their bowling and did that job well according to their coach, Colin Johnson, from Charlestown Public School. James was happy with his effort saying, “It was good to play at the higher level and it was harder to get wickets easily.” Thomas also found it hard despite his representative efforts at the Hunter Valley level saying, “If you are off line, they just smacked you but I learned a lot over the week of the carnival.” Needless to say, both boys have made their schools and families very proud of their efforts and sportsmanship during the carnival. Congratulations James and Thomas from News Of The Area.
