to support the Rural Fire Service at Tea Gardens, Pindimar, North Arm Cove and areas impacted by bushfires. Club President Stephen Gately said, “While the Golf Club was already a designated Emergency Evacuation Centre, the Board had decided that there was more that could be done in light of the serious fire events across the country in recent months.” “To this end, the Club has decided to conduct a Charity Golf event in the next couple of weeks on Friday 17 January, to provide a coordinated mechanism to raise much needed funds to support our local RFS and the victims of this terrible series of fire events,” Mr Gately said. Over the next couple of weeks, the Club has decided to actively seek donations from members and guests to assist with this Appeal, culminating with the Charity Golf Day in a couple of weeks. The Club will also be actively seeking support for this appeal from local businesses in Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest. Mr Gately said, “While todate our local community had been spared from the tragic fire conditions being experienced by other communities, we shouldn’t be complacent and we can be prepared by ensuring our local

Mr Gately urged all locals at Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest, surrounding areas as well as the many visitors to the area during this holiday period, to get behind this initiative and to provide whatever support they can to ensure this event is a complete success.

Joint Operation local Stations By Sandra CLARK
A JOINT Port Stephens - Hunter Police District Operation made up of Officers from Tea Gardens, Raymond Terrace and Dungog Stations, Highway Patrol Officers, Water Police, Public Transport Command and Trail Bike Operative was conducted in the Tea Gardens and Nelson Bay Area on Friday 3 January. It was a joint operation with MidCoast Council, NSW Department of Fisheries, Port Stephens Maritime, National Parks and Wildlife Service and the RMS as part of Operation Tanlines in order to keep our community safe. Inspector and Commander of the Operation Tony Townsend told News of The Area, “The objective of this joint operation is to ensure community safety through an increased presence during this busy holiday period.” “Increased Officer presence will not only be visible on local streets, patrols will include public transport, camping grounds, waterways here and

This annual initiative that takes months of planning by multiple agencies to achieve, is designed to mitigate anti-social behaviour and raise awareness of crime prevention measures especially when a large influx of people arrives here for their summer holidays.
Communities in and around the Mid North Coast, Newcastle and Hunter regions are popular tourist areas, especially for residents of the Sydney basin within that two-hour drive north. Inspector Townsend said, “It’s a case of proactive policing during this time so that the residents in these local communities can feel safe
knowing we are here in numbers on the ground.” The Operation was planned by Senior Constable Alison Stewart, the Port Stephens - Hunter Police District Crime Prevention Officer. Non-urgent information that may be helpful to Police during this busy time can be reported through the Police Assist line on 131 444.
Artist tags Dolphin Room
BY Ann SCULLY
SELF made and self taught, seventeen year old Wesley Mail has made a difference to the back wall of the newly refurbished Dolphin Room at the Tea Gardens Hotel with his artistic talents focusing on an underwater mural depicting dolphins and turtles which are synonymous of our wonderful waterways surrounding the twin towns of Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest. The idea was orchestrated when Wesley’s dad made a visit to the Hotel and has been sharing his love of photography with the Hotel owner, Ben Hanson and during the conversation Ben mentioned that he would like to commission an artist to paint a mural on the back wall of the Dolphin Room. Subsequently, Wesley welcomed the opportunity to paint another mural and he told News Of The Area, “I love painting these murals and have completed ten so far and it makes me feel good to show off my artwork to everyone whilst adding interest to the look of a particular building.”

When News Of The Area asked owner Ben what he thought of Wesley’s mural so far, he said, “I think it is fantastic – when I go to Sydney and see some of the modern artworks that have been completed in pubs down there, I wanted to steal their idea and add some interest to make the Pub look more eclectic and cool.”

There is considerable variation in the ways that families arrange their children’s care after separation. Issues such as the children’s age, the parents’ abilities to communicate and resolve post separation issues, and the parents’ working patterns play a significant role in decision making. The Australian Institute of Family Studies conducts multiple, large-scale studies of post separation parenting outcomes. In October 2019 it published a research summary. Some of its key findings were: • About 3% of separated parents use courts as their main pathway to making parenting arrangements (based on a sample of about 6,000 separated parents about 18 months after separation). These are predominantly families affected by family violence, child safety concerns and other complex issues. • About 97% of separated parents do not go to court to decide their parenting arrangements, although 16%
use Family Dispute Resolution Services or lawyers. • Orders for no contact with 1 parent are rare: 3% of all court orders. • There are 2 significant ways in which court orders and arrangements in the general separated population differ: 1. Court ordered arrangements are less likely to involve no contact between children and their father: only 3% of court orders, compared to 9% of the general separated population. 2. Arrangements where children spend most of their time with their father are more common in orders made where litigation occurs (10–19%) than in the separated population generally (2%). If you want to read more about this topic, a link to the research summary is: https:// a i f s . g o v. a u / p u b l i c a t i o n s / parenting-arrangements-afterseparation If you require advice on parenting issues, please contact our Family Law Team.

GALLERIES IN THE GARDENS PRESENTS
Council fast-track desalination MIDCOAST Council is fast-tracking the development of a temporary desalination plant at the Nabiac Aquifer water supply plant to supply emergency water, in case it’s required in 2020. “We’ve made the decision to ensure water security for the Manning - Great Lakes scheme, which supplies 90 per cent of our water users,” said Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services, Rob Scott. “We are currently seeking approvals from the NSW Government to proceed with a desalination plant, accessing the $1 million grant to kick start the project.” There is an immense amount of work being undertaken in a short time frame. “This amount of construction work would normally have taken 12 months or more to deliver. With the planning work we have already done and construction commencing onsite this week, we’re on track to commission the temporary desalination plant by March 2020,” said Mr Scott. The proposal involves hiring mobile a desalination plant already mounted in multiple shipping containers. “The overall treatment system is a two stage filtration process, with the second stage being reverse osmosis. This is the step that desalinates the water. Extensive support infrastructure needs to be built before the shipping containers arrive onsite. This includes inlet and outlet pipelines to the river, vehicular access, storage tanks and the footings for the containers as well as connections between all the container units. Salt water will be extracted from the Wallamba River, treated at the temporary desalination plant and provided to supplement the existing Manning and Great Lakes water supply. The existing Nabiac Water Scheme has infrastructure that can transfer water concurrently
Pat vs Cat
north to the Taree area and to Forster / Tuncurry and surrounds. Council will obtain the relevant licences to permit water extraction and discharge the concentrated salt water through a reverse osmosis process. A review of environmental factors (REF) has been produced which outlines measures to ensure there is minimal adverse environmental impact as a result of the plant’s temporary operations. The REF is available on Council’s website at midcoast.nsw.gov.au/ waterrestrictions. The plan includes discharging only for a short period of time and monitoring water quality throughout the operation of the plant. It’s estimated that a supply of around 17.5 million litres per day would provide emergency water supply for all users of the Manning - Great Lakes supply, with the desalination plant providing up to 5.5 million litres of water per day, added to an expected production of up to 12 million litres from the Nabiac Aquifer. Currently our average usage is hovering just above 20 million litres per day, with the current water restrictions target being 17 million litres per day. “If we can reduce our water usage to 17 megalitres per day, and with the responses we’ve outlined above, we will have enough water to get by during this prolonged drought,” said Mr Scott. Council’s modelling shows that this reduction can be achieved with no outdoor water use. “When we have had some rain the demand has dropped to around the 17 megalitres per day target which shows us that we can achieve this target for usage if people follow the water restrictions.”

Huge loss of wildlife from Fires By Marian SAMPSON
n the O Couch
IAN MORPHETT: “We will never know how many were actually killed by the fires"
AUSTRALIA is reeling in the horror of the fires which are engulfing the country. We are watching our nation burn in unprecedented bushfires and there is anger, shock and grief. There is significant loss of human life and property. The wildlife in some areas has been totally decimated. The eyrie quiet here in much of Port Stephens and the Myall region and the smudge of smoke in the air fails to convey the magnitude of our losses as a nation. We once had an ark for the Koala on Kangaroo Island now that ark is gone and so too is at least half of the one truly thriving population of koalas left in Australia. The population on Kangaroo Island was growing at such a rate that at one point it was rumored the South Australian Government considered a cull which was rejected. On Kangaroo Island 13,500 koalas have been sterilised or contracepted in what is considered to be one of the largest fertility control projects in the world. There are reports of some 25,000 koalas dying in the Kangaroo Island fires. The ability of the population to repopulate is dramatically reduced through the fertility control program. This makes securing the koala population within our own Myall Coast and Port Stephens region even more important. Local koalas are already under stress from loss of habitat, the drought, vehicle strikes and dog attacks. Our koala carers are under the pump, caring for not only koalas from our region but also for refugees from the fires. What we need is definitive national and local action now to save this iconic species. Everything we thought we knew about the survival of the koala has changed in the months since the fires began that engulf the nation. Julie Jennings who is a carer volunteering for Port Stephens Koalas told News Of The Area, “Our

Dear Jasminda,
q
One of the koalas in care at the Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary.
koalas are so valuable to Australia and the world now, they are million dollar koalas now; we have no idea what the populations are now… in my personal opinion the future of the koala has a better chance if they can cohabit with humans.” Koalas are living in her street and the community have planted feed trees. Julie believes that all new developments should have koala feed trees planted for shade which would provide a better environment for the residents, and that land should not be cleared of all trees to make way for developments. “Council did street planting in quiet streets in areas like Soldiers Point and the trees planted are koala feed trees encouraging cohabitation with humans which allows us to see other problems and protect them from fires at the same time as we protect our properties.” “The population of the koala is now in a catastrophic situation,” she said. Ian Morphett, Secretary of Myall Koala and Environment Group said, “All wildlife caring

groups in our region such as Port Stephens Koalas, Hunter Wildlife and Taree Koalas in Care are almost overwhelmed by the number of koalas needing attention. Many of them are outside their areas because the local groups couldn't handle the numbers.” Mr Morphett said, “We will never know how many were actually killed by the fires because they were so hot there are often no remains to identify. And, of course, it is not just the koalas.” Port Stephens and Myall Region koalas are not safe from bushfires, dog attacks, vehicle strikes or further loss of environment. Of course koalas are just one of the many species that the fires have decimated, they are one of the more visible and invoke emotive responses. It is our actions and our responsibility to the land we walk on and the environment which we live in which will determine the future of the koala and other species after the fires.

By Marian SAMPSON AT times we all have a little extra love to give. Fostering a pet is one way that you can share that love, without tying yourself down for the 10-20 years that the commitment of pet ownership can mean. Hunter Animal Rescue needs Foster Carers here in the Myall Coast region. At the recent foster carers training session for the region, potential foster carers learned about the types of pets that they may be asked to foster while these animals await their forever home. Caroline Hawkless, Secretary of Hunter Animal Rescue told News Of The Area, “We like people to make an informed decision if they think fostering is something they would like to do.” You can find the application on the website www. hunteranimalrescue.com.au and click through to the foster care section. Hunter Animal Rescue conducted pet Santa Photos on the beach over the Festive season and all profits from this event were donated to Hunter
We are not yet halfway through the holidays and my children are already bored. Any suggestions? Mrs KG, Tea Gardens Dear Mrs KG, At what point did parents become event organisers for their annoying offspring? I hate dragging out the ‘when I was a kid’ line, but when I was a kid, we were basically left to our own devices. We would draw or roller skate down frighteningly steep hills or spend all day in the sun or bake unrecognisable delicacies in non-supervised kitchens. In fact, I’m not even sure I had parents for weeks on end. I guess they were there somewhere, but we were pretty much left to our own devices and I don’t think it did us any harm. With so many people in absolutely dire situations due to the raging bushfires, I think bored kids are probably the least of our worries. Why don’t you get them to come up with a way to raise some money for the RFS, or have them make pouches for the animals that somehow made it through the devastation. Maybe you could get them to design a new advertising campaign for Scott Morrison, or they could write a letter to some of our firefighting volunteers to thank them for the tireless work they are doing to save homes and lives. Boredom probably sounds pretty damn appealing to the people who are trying to rebuild after losing everything, Mrs KG. What do you think? We are lucky to be in Port Stephens at the moment when so much of the nation is burning. Sorry to be negative, but bored children? Get a grip. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

WHEN you live in a ‘sunburnt country’ like we do, solar power is a wonderful way to harness the sun’s power to our benefit. And that benefit isn’t just financial. Installing clean, pure energy from the sun reduces our footprint by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and our reliance on fossil fuels. Of course, you will save on power bills, leaving you more money in your pocket for other things. And that’s got to be appealing! There is an outlay but there are also wonderful rebates upon installation and as soon as your panels are approved and turned on, your money saving starts immediately. I’m seeing more and more properties with solar panels for all electrical appliances and those that are solely hot water. Buyers are discerning and solar panels; water tanks and other eco-friendly and money saving initiatives are viewed favourably. The absence of such initiatives isn’t necessarily a deal-breaker for buyers, but properties that have them, do, as you say, have an ‘edge’ and that can sway a buyer comparing two fairly similar properties. So, yes, give yourself an edge, and enjoy the benefits in the meantime.

A national outstanding achievement. Due to her drive and impetus to achieve, she went on to complete the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest SLSC’s submissions for the Hunter Surf Life Saving PLATINUM Level Quality Club awards for the 17/18 achieved success 16/17 and seasons and both years affording the Club financial grants from Surf Lifesaving. In conclusion, Maxine’s contribution to TGHN SLSC has encompassed every Club Activity across the entire gamut of Surf Lifesaving. Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Lifesaving Club and Lifesaving in general are all the better for her involvement. Her dedication, commitment and performance in this role can be described as nothing short of exemplary and above and beyond what could be considered as normal. Maxine has been of inestimable worth to Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Lifesaving Club. Her value as Administrator is best summed up by the words of past Club Treasurer Ian Dunlop “I havepersonally who said, observed and experienced the extraordinary fashion in which Maxine’s diligent and devoted service has ever been continually, quietly and effectively brought to bear for the benefit of the members of TGHN SLSC particularly and Surf Life Saving in general. Our club is fortunate to count among its members one such who is a rarity and without peer, and who so effectively demonstrates vigilance and service “beyond the line of duty” to an extraordinary degree.” The Committee and Members of Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Lifesaving Club as a whole, are very proud of Maxine Cook and appreciate enormously the work she has performed over the past decade.
