REMEMBRANCE DAY FROM Page 1 terrible years for mankind known as the First World War. Initially known as Armistice Day, Commonwealth Countries changed the name to Remembrance Day after World War II as a day where the fallen of both wars would be remembered. Now, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month each year the nation pauses to remember the sacrifices that result from all wars and conflicts Australia has played a role in. Across the Myall Coast Remembrance Day Services will be conducted, providing an opportunity for locals to gather and reflect on the

terrible cost of conflict on our country. For those who are unable to make it to an official service it is appropriate to pause for one minute's silence in your home school or workplace at 11:00 am on Friday 11 November to remember those who fell or suffered as a result of conflict. Bulahdelah has a rich history of commemorating Remembrance Day, and will once again offer a Service at the town’s Cenotaph. Steve Newman, Secretary of the Bulahdelah RSL sub-Branch told News Of The Area, “The history of service of the community of Bulahdelah is detailed in a series of storyboards. “This year we are

working to see these storyboards go to the families of those mentioned as we no longer have a safe space to store this history.” In Tea Gardens the Service will start at 10.45am at ANZAC Park, however this year’s Remembrance Day commemorations will not include a march. Jennifer Ross-Henry of the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest RSL sub-Branch told News Of The Area, “Refreshments will be served at the Country Club. “It will be poignant as some of our members, who have been very active in the community, have passed since the last Service. “To remember individual people in the Service is very special.”

Karuah Place Plan nominated for Best Strategic Planning Project q Port Stephens Council’s Place Plan for Karuah was nominated for a Best Strategic Planning Project award.

PORT Stephens Council’s Place Plan for Karuah was nominated in the Best Strategic Planning Project category of the NSW Awards for Planning Excellence. The Awards recognise and acknowledge innovation and excellence in planning across the state, and showcase leading practice across a range of planning disciplines and sectors.

Council’s Strategy and Environment Section Manager Brock Lamont said the Karuah Place Plan is about improving liveability and wellbeing, as well as delivering economic growth for the river-side village, traditionally owned by the Worimi people. “Through community engagement and consultation, we’ve ensured

the plan recognises the values and priorities of the entire Karuah community including local businesses, community leaders, and the Worimi,” Mr Lamont said. “The actions and projects in the plan highlight the stunning natural environment that Karuah is known for while balancing the need for new housing, business growth and job

opportunities for locals. “It’s focused on creating a more connected town centre, improving accessibility to the waterfront, enhancing and protecting the natural environment, and providing additional housing and improved community facilities for all to enjoy. “We’re proud to be nominated for Best Strategic Planning Project at these awards. It shows us our peers recognise the value of our place planning and implementation approach, and can see the difference it makes to communities at a grass-roots level,” he added. Manager Rebecca Morley said the nomination has created a sense of pride in Karuah locals, as well as acknowledging the importance of community involvement in the implementation of the Plan. “The Plan inspires and encourages community involvement in creating a better place through conservation, beautification and civic pride projects, activations and event opportunities,” Ms Morley said. “We’re grateful to the Karuah community for supporting the Place Plan and being active in its

implementation, which has contributed to its overall success and ultimately, our nomination at the Awards. “Since the Plan’s adoption in March 2022 the community have established the monthly Garuwa Community Market, we’ve commenced the Karuah Konnect on-demand bus service, and have reinstated a scenic cruise along the Western Harbour, from Nelson Bay to Karuah return. “We love how passionate Karuah locals are to get stuck in, and help us implement actions and improvements from the Plan.” To learn more about the Karuah Place Plan and completed and upcoming projects, visit portstephens. nsw.gov.au/development/ place-plans/karuah-placeplan.

Farms are often considered as more than just real estate by those who own and work them. In many cases they are passed down through the generations from parents to their children and as such have sentimental, as well as commercial value. During a separation, this value must be balanced against the non-farming spouse’s right to a fair and equitable property settlement. Prior to the introduction of the Family Law Act, farms maintained a special status within the Family Courts with an acknowledgement that farms were not only valuable pieces of real estate providing a home for the family, but also business assets generating an income. As such, the Courts largely took the view that as far as possible, orders should not be made that would affect the income earning potential of the

farm or require its sale. As a consequence, nonfarming spouses could be significantly disadvantaged compared to their suburban counterpart who might otherwise receive a payment from the sale of the matrimonial home. Today, farms are largely treated as all other real property, however, there remains the view that it is preferable for a business asset such as a farm to be retained by the spouse working the farm, but only if a just and equitable result can still be achieved for both parties. A Court will consider alternatives to forcing the sale of the farm, but ultimately if the alternatives are not just and equitable then the farm will need to be sold, just as any other asset of the parties. In light of the upcoming NSW State election in March 2023, Mr Latham believes it is time to expand One Nation's voice of influence, by creating a One Nation presence in Port Stephens. With more than 70 supporters in attendance at last month’s meeting, potential candidates to represent Port Stephens and the Hunter at the next State election were invited to be a part of the selection process. Mr Latham is currently serving as a member of the NSW Legislative Council, more commonly known as the Upper House, in the NSW State Government. Mr Latham is one of Australia’s leading advocates of ‘outsider’ politics and strongly opposes the impact of political correctness and identity politics on public debate. “I believe that no Australian should live in fear of the words they utter, nor should they be fearful of proclaiming four of the most

glorious words of our civilisation: ‘I am a Christian’,” Mr Latham told News Of The Area. “No one should be sacked by their employer for statements of genuine belief and faith,” Mr Latham continued. Mr Latham said that the NSW economy is at a tipping point, believing the Perrottet/ Kean government to have no real strategy for meeting the state’s economic challenges. With policies covering issues from energy, to law and order and school education, Mark Latham MLC believes that One Nation is the only sensible alternative in government. Mr Latham thanked those who have recently joined the One Nation party and also those who were in attendance at the monthly meeting. A One Nation candidate to represent Port Stephens in the state election will be announced in the coming weeks.

2500 Boots at Parliament House SEVEN men every day, 2500 every year, take their lives through suicide in Australia with many more attempts being unsuccessful. According to Beyond Blue, the number of men who die by suicide in Australia is nearly double the national road toll. This week News Of The Area spoke to Paul Withall from the Zero Suicide Community Awareness Program. “Suicide should not be a taboo topic, the high number of deaths isn’t just because of mental health, often the high number is a direct result of situational suicide, there is a difference,” Mr Withall said. “These mens’ deaths are often the result of family relationship breakdown, family court, lack of access to their children, loss of jobs and not enough support services for men,” Mr Withall continued. The team at Zero Suicide are taking

With this in mind, community members are invited to a memorial event called ‘2500 Boots On the Lawn at Parliament House’ on Monday, November 21 at 11 am. 2500 boots will be laid out on the lawns of Parliament House to remember the men who die by suicide every year. Guest speakers and politicians attending the event are uniting to call for a Minister for Men to be established. Log Feral Deer Sightings

q A Rusa Deer photographed in the MidCoast LGA.

q The interactive Deer Scan Map allows you to log sightings of feral deer.

FERAL animals can cause havoc in farms, gardens and the wider environment. Deer are an issue in our region with wild deer munching and trampling gardens, devastating farms and causing problems on our roads. DeerScan is a purpose-built community website and app for recording deer sightings, damage and control actions. Members of the public can record sightings including information on the species of deer, observations or direct sightings, hoof prints, scats, deer calls, or camera photos. The more information recorded, the more useful the deer mapping will become over time. Trends in movement will start to emerge, which can be used to decide where control should be undertaken. By recording the damage caused by deer, local authorities can become more informed about where and when problems are occurring. This can help to guide local control programs. Once activity is logged control activities can be implemented. These may include the use of fences or acoustic deterrents, trapping and groundbased shooting. Recording control activities can help you to keep a record of what methods have been used, and can help you to document

how much effort is required to reduce the problems deer cause. Pest animals typically live and/or move across the landscape where they can access suitable food and habitat. Maps created through community contributions like DeerScan are therefore an essential planning tool for effective pest management. Mat Bell, Senior Ecological Officer at MidCoast Council told News Of The Area, “Council understands that feral deer are expanding in distribution and abundance in the Port Stephens area. “This is consistent with state-wide trends. “Feral deer numbers across NSW are escalating and there has been substantial increase in deer abundance over the past ten years. “Port Stephens contains populations of three species of feral deer, namely fallow deer, rusa deer and red deer.

“Increasing populations of feral deer increase the risks and impacts of this species on the community, the environment and agriculture. “The community should be encouraged to report all sightings of feral deer via the Feral Scan App. “This enables agencies to monitor changes in the frequency of sightings, understand new deer incursions and potentially evaluate the success of control

programs,” he said. Port Stephens Council is an active participant in the National Feral Deer Action Plan (NFDAP) and recently supported the NFDAP to trial a media campaign to build public awareness of the impacts of feral deer and to report sightings. Support for young mothers in Tea Gardens AN initiative of the St Stephens Catholic Church in Tea Gardens, the Yummies 4 Mummies (Y4M) group started in March 2010 to provide support for young mothers in the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest area. “We saw a need to provide networking and social connections for our young families,” said Y4M coordinator Jan Coomer.

Yummies 4 Mummies gives young mothers of preschool age children a chance to get together on the first and third Mondays through the school term for a chat and a cuppa, and do it all child free. While they're catching up with other mums, their children are looked after by the older women of the community.

Having started up again in May, Y4M is now calling young mothers across the Myall Coast to join the group and become part of the support network. “In March 2020 we had 18 families and 25 children attending, but because of Covid we had to close down,” said Jan. The result was The Broken Hearts Ribbon Day Campaign, which, now in its third year, is being acknowledged in the Port Stephens community on November 10, 2022. Broken Hearts Ribbon Day is for Mothers, Fathers, Grandparents and extended family members who are alienated from their children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews due to what they believe to be the unfair and unreasonable withholding of children by a parent. “We would love those who are experiencing the loss of a child through parent alienation to tie a ribbon

around a tree, pole or fence post,” co-founder of Broken Hearts Ribbon Day, Kathie Cooper told News Of The Area. “Please pick a tree that is in your front yard or is highly visible to the public, tie a ribbon for the children that you love but do not see,” Ms Cooper said. Participants are also asked to take a photo and share it on Facebook with the hashtag #brokenheartsribbonday in order to create awareness. It is requested that you remove your ribbons from any tree at the end of the day to save any trees being damaged.

Thursday, 10 November 2022

IN 2020, a small delegation of women in Port Stephens and beyond, who had been supporting their sons, partners and husbands through family law court journeys and separation from their children, launched the inaugural Broken Hearts Ribbon Day. Tired of feeling like the plights of their family were invisible, the women decided to come together to let the world know what was happening to their families, and were determined to create change through awareness.

Songs of World War One to broadcast on Myall Coast Radio By Marian SAMPSON BRIAN Jones, a volunteer broadcaster with Myall Coast Radio, is once again hosting a special Remembrance Day program. “The radio program, ‘Remember the Armistice’, which so many of you helped to make, and broadcast last Remembrance Day will be broadcast again at 11.00 am on November 11 2022,” Brian said. “There were so many positive responses to our

efforts of showing the horrors of WW1 through the eyes and emotional words of the poets last year, that it will be broadcast again this year.” The Remembering The Armistice program is approximately one hour long, and will be followed at around noon by a second program featuring ‘The songs that won WW1’. This second program tells the story of World War One through the songs of the time. “Strangely the songs

were almost the antithesis to the war poetry!” Brian said. The program will feature a range of nostalgic period music, from recruiting songs to romantic ballads and songs expressing sarcasm at the war. As this program is well over an hour long it has been broken down into four 20 minute sections. Myall Coast Radio streams online 24/7 and it is anticipated that the program will be listened to as far away as the UK.

HAWKS Nest local Leonie Reisberg is currently exhibiting a collection of fine art photographs at the Manning Regional Art Gallery in Taree. The exhibition is a retrospective collection with over 50 years of photography on display. The imagery includes a variety of subject matter including people, portraits, objects and places including the beautiful scenery of the Myall region photographed

over the past five years. The artworks include a mix of monochrome and colour and a blend of photographic styles including polaroids and panoramas. Leonie Reisberg told News Of The Area, “My favourite piece which is on display is of a little five year old girl who is wearing a tutu in her backyard with a sprinkler on - in the background is her great, great grandmother.” This child is now a lawyer with a family of her own. Leonie can often be seen taking images around the

Hawks Nest area, inspired by things that capture her curiosity. The unusual and things that don't quite fit are among the things which Leonie’s work documents. One of Leonie’s works on display is ‘Your Mind Will Set You Free’ and the image is of a sculpture of Buddha’s head which is partially unpacked, leaving Buddah appearing caged within a crate. All of Leonie’s artworks have titles and some have stories behind them, they are framed limited editions and are available for sale.

a series of workshops. Do you have an old bicycle in need of repairs, but don’t know where to start? Did you know that since 2011, the Green Bikes program at Tuncurry has restored hundreds of bikes for resale to the public? The annual Garage Sale Trail is on again across the MidCoast on 12-13 and 19-20 November, with 51 registered garage sales. Shopping the trail is a great way to keep precious resources in circulation for as long as possible.

www.newsofthearea.com.au

The average garage sale on the trail will extend the life of 389 kilograms of valuable resources. That's saving nearly 20 tonnes of valuable resources that may otherwise have ended up in landfill. On the Myall Coast there are a few not-for-profit and multi-stall events to support the ‘It’s Not Wasted Garage Sale Campaign’. These include the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Men’s Shed and The Family Research Sale events on 12 November and the Coffee

in the Cove Garage Sale which boasts 20 stalls on 19 November. Whether you're hosting a garage sale or shopping the trail, your involvement will make a positive difference in the MidCoast region. THE LIVING ROOM

TEN, 7.30pm

The Living Room has been a reliably jovial Friday evening stalwart for the past 11 years, but the word is out that the show is taking a year-long break so that Amanda Keller, Miguel Maestre (above centre), Barry Du Bois (above left) and Dr Chris Brown (above right) can have a breather. While fans fret about whether they’ll defect to Better Homes and Gardeans, lap up these final episodes. Tonight, Miguel helps throw a surprise 60th anniversary lunch and Chris lands in Fiji to explore the secret behind the locals’ smiles.

It was only a matter of time. After years of fruitless flirting, are the writers behind one of the longestrunning forensic crime dramas in Britain finally giving into the romantic pressure? In tonight’s season 24 finale, Nikki (Emilia Fox) and her sidekick Jack (David Caves) share a moment that will have fans either all flustered or covering their eyes. It’s a bold move for a series’ two main characters to cross the flirting boundary: once done there’s no going back. Despite Nikki declaring that their romance would be “totally unethical,” temperatures rise, with the background emergency situation edge-of-your-seat stuff. Season 25 can’t come quickly enough.

THIS IS YOUR LIFE

SEVEN, 7.30pm

Half the Aussie population presumably has a long-buried memory where they are singing their heart out to Tina Arena’s (right) passionate 1994 hit Chains. Likewise, it was a rite of passage for many to curl up on the couch with our parents or grandparents to witness the emotional theatrics of This Is Your Life, which first hit screens in 1975. Tonight, viewers can take another trip down memory lane, in more ways than one, as the rebooted version of this series celebrates Arena’s impressive career. Australian and international guests pay tribute to one of Australia’s most successful female performers, with host Melissa Doyle emcee of the entertaining shindig. 1111

Jasminda Email Jasminda: media@newsofthearea.com.au

Dear Jasminda, I have the most amazing hairdresser, but she chats incessantly. Because I work for a call centre, getting my hair done is one of the few times I can just sit and relax. How can I tactfully explain this. Nell D. Dear Nell,

READING by Lynne Miles: Proverbs 8: 32 & 33 "Now then my children listen to me; blessed are those who keep my ways. Listen to my instruction and be wise, do not ignore it."

Being a call centre worker, I can understand that you may need assistance with being tactful. Call centre operators generally call right when dinner is on, or at the start of a working day, or on the weekend when you are just about to play a family game of charades.

Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club News By John SLATER

2 NOVEMBER Some said the wind was so strong today that it would blow a dog off its chain, but 45 bowlers nonetheless endured at least enjoying the sunshine. The morning winners were Tony Butler, Col Amos, and Mark Hair.

The result was decided by the Highest winning margin and they, along with 2 other teams, had a margin of 10. A three-end countback was required. The afternoon game was won by Peter Cheney, Paul Carter, and Col Fossey. They had the highest winning score of 23.

The overall winners were Henry Dallas, Graham Reynolds, and Mark Nightingale with a total score of 32. The Garden Eatery voucher was won, once again, by Peter Cheney, (no wonder he never eats at home.) Our thanks to the Garden eatery for their support. Excitement is building for the First National Dolphins who are off to

contest the NSW State Pennant titles at Dubbo and Warilla. What a wonderful experience for them as it has been sometime between drinks for this to happen and there are many players in the Club who may never have the same opportunity. Not only will the players be representing our Club, but they will also be representing the Newcastle and District Bowling

Association, otherwise known as Zone 2. They go with the best wishes from the Club, and I know they will equip themselves well. Go the Dolphins! 5 November Tea Gardens played host today to a team of 21 bowlers from the Burwood RSL BC. A Triples game was contested over 18 ends with prizes for the best team.

I feel sure that Tea Gardens equipped itself well and that win, lose, or draw, the game of bowls was the winner. 6 November The Burwood RSL players stayed over today to join the Sunday bowlers for more friendship and bowling competition. In wonderful conditions 52 players competed with all participants enjoying a barbeque lunch after play.

Greenkeepers Revenge STORY STARTS on BACK COVER, Page 20

Then they start their spiel with such startling speed that it is only after the third sentence that you realise you are being seduced into some home cladding, or a new phone plan, or a two-for-one deal on blinds and shutters, when all you really want to do is dig into your carbonara and garlic bread or your monthly invoices or your non-verbal interpretation of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. So, if it is tact you are after with your hairdresser, arrive with headphones and say, 'I hope you don't mind, but I have to listen to this podcast on productivity before I return to work today. Boss's orders.' Or you could bring a book and say it's the only opportunity you have to read. Alternatively, you could realise that your hairdresser knows you are a call centre operator and she is just trying to get her own back from all those occasions when a cold caller interrupted her otherwise peaceful evening.

HOW would you like to own two dwellings on the one parcel just 600m from the surf beach? This two-storey duplex allows all the flexibility one could want. Live in one and rent the other; rent both; live in both with extended family; combine to create one large home, and even add bedrooms; the options are endless. This contemporary construction was originally built by local master builders Cooney Constructions - for their own use. The 'Magic Square' position is highly sought, given it refers to that part of Hawks Nest between both Jimmys and Bennetts beaches, and the well-regarded golf course. Close to shops, cafés, restaurants as well as the Myall River, this is the ideal location for anyone that enjoys the coastal lifestyle. The two-storey duplex comprises two identical, three bedroom, two bathroom

Greenkeepers Revenge THE annual ‘Greenkeepers Revenge’ golf day at the Hawks Nest Golf Club is always a fun day played on Melbourne Cup morning. This year’s event was a corker and provided many challenges for the 60 contestants! It’s not easy trying to putt into a hole in a sand bunker, over numerous coils of hose, through a barrage of golf carts or even a maze of tee balls – but all players enjoyed their challenges. Well done to the winners and to the Greenkeepers, let’s wait and see what exciting
