Firefighters of the future
By John SAHYOUN
EIGHT future firefighters from Bulahdelah Central School (BCS) recently completed the NSW Rural Fire Service School (RFS) Cadet program. The program has been running for seven years. The four-week training course was led by volunteers from Bulahdelah and Green Point RFS brigades and provided students with an insight into fire safety and prevention techniques. Participants also gained an appreciation of community service and the work and commitment of the volunteers.

Cadet Sebastian Sumner thoroughly enjoyed the course and said the skills learnt will last a lifetime.
“The cadet program was fantastic, and I was very proud to wear the uniform,” Sebastian told News Of The Area.
“I learnt a lot about teamwork, taking responsibility, initiative and leadership, and these skills will be very useful in future employment.”
Bulahdelah Rural Fire Service Captain Rod Parr said, “This is the first time the program has been offered locally and commended the cadets on their enthusiasm.
“What a privilege it was to teach and mentor these students.
“Their leadership and teamwork skills grew immensely over the four weeks, as did their confidence.
“Each and every cadet can hold their heads up with pride as their achievements were incredible.”
The students were celebrated at a recent school assembly.
Following the success of the program, plans are now in place to repeat the course with a new group of students later in the year.
The NSW RFS is the world’s largest volunteer fire service with over 70,000 dedicated volunteers across New South Wales. New volunteers are always welcome to join the brigades.

SKATE PARK PLAN
FROM Page 1
along the Myall Way. The weather-beaten blocks of featureless concrete that are the Skate Park’s ramps and jumps greet motorists at the gateway to Tea Gardens, and they need some attention.
Installed over a decade ago in pre-fabricated sections, the Skate Park has begun to resemble a set-piece from a postapocalyptic drama.
Such bland and solid vertical surfaces are magnets for vandalism, often the toil of graffiti artists struggling to find a proper outlet for their artistic inclinations.
The Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association (HNTGPA) seeks to remedy the situation, announcing a ‘Skate Park Redesign Competition’.
“Children and young people under eighteen years of age are invited to submit their ideas for redesigning the Tea Gardens Skate Park,” the HNTGPA’s Secretary told NOTA.
“First Prize is a $50 Gift Voucher and Second Prize is a $25 Gift Voucher, plus, the kids’ ideas will help to really improve the Skate Park.”
Jeanette Hart, head of
the Myall River Art Walk group, told NOTA, “This competition is about kids having ownership in their community, and will give them pride in the facility, and hopefully stop the continuing vandalism.”
The winning children’s design will be adapted to the bare concrete sides of the ramps, as well as around the nearby toilet block.
“I’d also like to engage some of the graffiti people
more constructively, show them that they can express themselves and their artform in legal and appropriate ways,” Ms Hart added.
The HNTGPA intends to segue the competition
into “a grant application to lobby MidCoast Council for an upgrade, including resurfacing the lonely grass netball court with a multipurpose court, marked with lines for basketball, soccer and other sports, too”.
Federal roads funding announced
By Thomas O’KEEFE
FEDERAL funding for local roads has recently been announced in the fourth stage of the Commonwealth Government’s ‘Local Roads and Community Infrastructure’ program.
Five local Councils within the Federal electorate of Lyne have been allocated a grand total of almost $12 million.
The total amounts for Phrase 4 (‘Parts A and B’ combined) are, by Council: Maitland City: $1,376,182;
Port Stephens: $1,230,752; Dungog Shire: $906,393; MidCoast: $5,349,312; and Port Macquarie-Hastings: $2,880,252.
“The Program has now become critical for regional Councils in infrastructure delivery,” said Dr David
Gillespie, Federal Member for Lyne.
“In my recent Vision 2030 Plan survey of 3,000 households across the Lyne electorate, roads were the number one priority, this program will go some way towards getting more road projects on the agenda.”
The Federal Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts (all one Department) stated that Councils will be able to access their Phase 4 funding allocations from July 2023.
“I’ve discussed the
need to not only maintain existing levels of funding for infrastructure in regional areas like ours, but also further investment given the importance of roads to our region and the economy,” Dr Gillespie told NOTA.
With close to half of the overall Federal funding within Lyne electorate going to MidCoast Council, one may hope that the Myall Way, among several other desperately damaged arterial roadways, may finally get some attention.
“In government, The Nationals put in place a

number of good programs for regional Australia.
“These programs, combined with the regionalisation agenda we took to the last election, should be embraced if Australia is not only to bring regional infrastructure up to standard, but also move the growth out of our major cities and into rural and regional towns,” Dr Gillespie added.
However, given that the existing list of MidCoast Council’s ‘Major road and bridge projects’ only specifies three planned projects south of the Lakes Way, the southern section of the LGA is likely not a priority.
When property is sold without your consent - transactions to defeat claims
by Alexander Gee
It’s not uncommon that when faced with a separation, one party may try to sell or otherwise dispose of property in their sole name, much to the frustration of the other party. Issues often arise when the family home is in one party’s sole name and can include circumstances where property is transferred to other family members for ‘protection’ from a family law claim.
The purpose of section 106B of the Family Law Act is to prevent parties from attempting to defeat a claim by their former partner by disposing of property, hiding assets or engaging in other financial manoeuvres that would have the effect of reducing the pool of assets available for division. It can be relied on by both married and de facto separated couples.
Generally speaking, the Court is provided with powers to restrict future transactions and to undo transactions
that have already been completed. To exercise the power, the Court must be satisfied that, among other things, an order was or would have been anticipated at the time of the transfer by a reasonable person and that the transfer defeats that anticipated order.
The power is discretionary and as such the Court would need to be convinced that it is fair to undo or restrict the transaction. As part of this consideration, the Court must consider the effect on any genuine third party who received the property.
If you have concerns about property being disposed of without your knowledge or agreement, we recommend you contact a member of our Separation, Family & Relationships team for advice.

Informing the public on bushfire issues
By John SAHYOUN
BULAHDELAH Rural Fire Service (RFS)
recently held a Community Bushfire Forum which allowed the public to ask questions about local bushfire safety.
Staff were present from the RFS Mid Coast District Office alongside representatives from the National Parks and Wildlife Service and State Forests.
Bulahdelah RFS captain Rod Parr said, “As much as we want to share information with the public, we also want to hear your concerns."
District Officer Mid Coast Darrin Briggs told NOTA, “The purpose of this event is that the community of Bulahdelah had concerns about what was going on regarding reduction burning and other issues.”
Issues discussed included increasing awareness, the unpredictability of fires and how hazard reduction burns are conducted.
Hazard reduction burns are conducted on a seven to ten year basis and involve an extensive planning process that involves taking into account the fuel moisture content, wind direction and the effect on flora and fauna.
“It’s about the community being self aware of the issues and the way landowners can help fireproof their properties to build up bushfire resilience,” said Mr Parr.
There is a fifty percent chance of an El Nino coming up, which will result in an increase in the potential for bushfires.
Therefore it is important to make sure you have a bushfire plan which is updated regularly and to make sure your home is well prepared.

Mystery roadworks at Winda Woppa
By Thomas O’KEEFE
WINDA Woppa residents were surprised to find their two main roads ripped up, and that resurfacing had begun last week, although they are not necessarily complaining.
“We’re happy this is happening, the Anchorage had an extremely bad corner filled with potholes,” Richard Streamer, President of the Winda Woppa Preservation Association told News Of The Area.
“It would’ve been nice to have advance word to the community – the current works stop at Guya Street, but are needed through to Kururma Crescent.
“However, there are worse places around that need fixing, like the Myall Way,” Mr Streamer added.
The absence of notification for Winda Woppa stakeholders clicks with the works’ absence on MidCoast Council’s list of ‘Major road
and bridge projects’.
Dozens of planned, current and completed projects are listed, replete with locations, brief descriptions, date estimates and budgets, including Gloucester, Stroud, Bulahdelah, Forster, and Taree.
Tea Gardens’ only projects are located in the Industrial Estate.
What about the Myall Way?
Multiple residents and visitors have commented that
the sole arterial road in and out of town is in the worst shape they have ever seen.
Several local businesses, whose supply lines depend on a safe and clear connection to the highway, have also voiced concerns.
“The Myall Way is definitely Council territory,” Mr Streamer declared, a statement fully supported by the NSW Government’s official road classification schedule and interactive map, found at https://roadswaterways. transport.nsw.
Myall Way/Street is classified as a ‘Regional Road’, governed by the Roads Act 1933 (NSW), and a link at the top of the webpage opens a document entitled ‘Schedule of Classified Roads and Unclassified Regional Roads’.
Page 1 clearly states: ‘Regional and Local Roads are administered, managed and financed by local councils’.
‘Due to their network significance Transport (NSW) provides financial assistance to councils for the management of Regional Roads’ reads the text of the Schedule.

Tea Gardens Fire and Rescue opens their doors
By Lindsay HALL
FAMILIES in Tea Gardens are encouraged to make a trip to their local Fire and Rescue Station on Saturday 13 May.
From 10am to 2pm the dedicated team of firefighters and support staff will be opening their doors to the public to help educate people about home fire safety.
Captain Jim Wisemantel hopes that families will be encouraged to be better prepared.
“This year we want you
to ask yourself ‘are you ready?’and prepare your homes early for winter by checking your smoke alarms and knowing what to do when it sounds.”
During the Open Day the team will conduct firefighting demonstrations, tours of the station and safety presentations.
Captain Wisemantel also hopes that people attending will gain a greater appreciation for the work that Fire and Rescue is engaged with in the community.
“From road crashes, hazardous material incidents and natural disasters to urban search and rescue,
medical responses and humanitarian relief, our firefighters are prepared for anything and ready to help anyone, anytime, anywhere.”
Statistically the incidents of home fires increase during winter, and can often be attributed to the increased and unsupervised use of heaters and electric blankets.
In addition to the opportunity to check out the fire trucks and station equipment, Captain Wisemantel hopes that conversations with local firefighters will help residents to be more aware of the risks, and better equipped to manage them.

Pindimar pollution threat
By Thomas O’KEEFE
POLLUTION threatens the pristine Pindimar waterfront, as MidCoast Council unilaterally plans to remove crucial public rubbish bins from South Pindimar Reserve.
Currently, eight Councilprovided bins sit neatly near the BBQ shelter, resulting from a decision to accommodate the recent holiday influx to the area.
“The area has been discovered, since COVID holiday season now extends almost year-round,” Vivian Panhuber, President of the Pindimar/Bundabah Community Association (PBCA) told NOTA.
However, recent Council notification has decreed to ‘urban’ and ‘non-urban’ residents alike that the bins shall go, eventually replaced by narrow-opening metal alternatives.
Council’s signage proclaims the bins are strictly for picnic and BBQ facilities users, not household rubbish.
“The PBCA has grave concerns over the proposed change, which happened without community consultation,” Ms Panhuber said.
The notice specifically directs non-urban land-
owners to travel into Tea Gardens Waste Management Centre to dispose of their rubbish, at a cost of $10.50.
“Council assumes that garbage left around the bins is only from non-urban landowners.
“This is prejudicial, discriminatory, untrue and unfair,” Allan Thorley, Chair of the PBCA Non-Urban Committee told NOTA.
“Council has never offered non-urban land-owners a bin
service, despite the fact that we pay rates like everyone else, and we don’t get much for them as it is,” Mr Thorley added.
Regardless of any alleged prejudice, one undeniable fact remains – many more people can use the bins.
The Tea Gardens Waste Management Centre is 15.5km away from South Pindimar Reserve, a threehour walk according to Google Maps – hardly “nearby”, as
Art and Craft Centre Open Days
By Marian SAMPSON
FOR those wanting to connect with the community and explore their creativity, there are some great open days and classes coming up this month.
Elsa Jones of the Myall Community Art and Craft Centre told News Of The Area, “This year instead of having just one Open Day for locals and visitors to come and see just what we are about, the Centre Management has decided to have a whole week of Open Days to show off all the classes which people can attend.
“All classes throughout
the week will have someone in attendance to talk about what goes on, with some participation of visitors if required.”
There are a host of classes being held at the centre, located at 245 Myall St, Tea Gardens, from Monday 15 May to Friday 19 May from 10 am to 1.00pm.
Monday is Open Day for the Craft Group, where the focus will be on art, ceramics and decorative works.
Tuesday will showcase spinning, weaving, knitting, woodwork, wood turning
Council’s notice declares, and a major disincentive for any day-trippers rushing to get home.
“People travelling north or south on the M1 do not pass the Centre, which has limited opening hours, and they won’t be racing to pay, either,” Ms Panhuber explained.
The most frustrating fact for the PBCA is that MidCoast Council failed to consult anyone locally.
As Mr Thorley stated, “It would have allowed property owners to contribute thoughts and alternate strategies.”

On Wednesday it will be patchwork, quilting and picture framing.
Thursday will showcase wood craft, leatherwork, soft crafts and braided rug making.
The Friday’s classes will focus on mosaics and printmaking.
“We all look forward to seeing lots of people who may have similar interests with a view to joining the Centre to practice their particular talent or just to learn something new,” Elsa said.

Lions Club of Tea Gardens hosts 55th Annual Changeover Dinner
By Sandra BOURKE
IT was the end of an era when Lion Peter Webb, the longest serving President in the 68 years of the Tea Gardens Lions, passed the baton to Lion Doug Allen during a delightful Changeover Dinner hosted at Mumm’s on the Myall.
Peter has been the President for four years, navigating the club through the COVID years, culminating in this big year which he summarised in his annual report stating, “We hit the ground running, with work continuing on the Bennetts Beach Frieze Wall, Bunnings, caravan park and other BBQs, festive season raffles and all other activities we were able to conduct after being affected by COVID restrictions.
“We supported the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, Rural Fire Service, Myall Masters Swim Meet, Hawks Nest Triathlon, Seniors Expo, Election Day, Lakes Trail Festival, Progress Association Youth Day, as well as the Lions Need for Feed Christmas in
July Toy Run for flood affected families in Lismore.
“As a result of our fundraising activities, approximately $23,400 was raised.
“We donated $13,200 to local charities (including the Free Clinic Bus, Tea Gardens School, Meals on Wheels, Myall Radio, RFS, Lions Park Lookout and others) and $7,450 to Lions Foundations (including Flood Appeal, Childhood Cancer, Diabetes, Drug Awareness and Alzheimer's Foundation).”
Peter acknowledged
and thanked all Lions, in particular the outgoing Lions Club Board comprising 1st Vice President Helen Watkins, 2nd Vice President Robert Dorman, Secretary Amanda Sykes, Service Chairperson Ann Hill, Treasurer Marlene Stokes, and Membership Chairperson Doug Allen.
The new Board has two new members, notably Lion Carole Richards serving as the new Membership Chairperson, and incoming President Doug Allen.
Previous District Governor, Lion Alan McKim,
oversaw the Changeover, congratulating the club on their success.
Incoming President Doug Allen’s first order of business was to congratulate and thank Peter Webb, stating, “He has left the Club in such excellent shape that Tea Gardens Lions Club is now the largest club
in the District, which covers the area from Gosford to Mudgee to Scone and across to Bulahdelah.”
This growth was evident in the induction of, and warm welcome to, three new members, Ian MacAuley, Robin MacAuley, and Annie Fowler.
Peter and Leone Webb are taking a well deserved extended holiday.

WINTER is coming, and the Red Cross Tea Gardens group is calling for some warmheartedness this season.
After proudly marching on ANZAC Day, the Red Cross ladies have been working hard on the latest appeal to combat rising homelessness in and around Newcastle.
“With the change in temperature, we’ve had a call for blankets for single-size beds, beanies, gloves, socks and scarves for the homeless and people living in their cars,” Janet Baker, Publicity Officer for Tea Gardens Red Cross told News Of The Area.
“Unfortunately, the numbers of people living in their cars have risen, and stocks of warm-weather clothing are low at the
moment.”
Exorbitant rents, coupled with widespread precarious employment have pushed the homelessness upsurge.
“Imagine trying to get an affordable rental, and 80 other people turn up – when you are living payday to payday, it doesn’t take much to end up sleeping in cars or on the streets,” Ms Baker
explained.
Red Cross launch Homelessness Appeal
Donations can be made at No.6 Settlers Way, Tea Gardens, whence a good friend of the Red Cross will take them to where they are needed in Newcastle.
The Red Cross ladies recently held a Mothers’ Day raffle near Coles Tea Gardens, the proceeds of which exceeded $1000, and will go
to local needs.
“New members are always welcome, anyone interested in specialised Red Cross training can contact Joanne Pierce on 0474 222 214 or come along and see and have a chat,” Ms Baker told NOTA.
The organisation’s Tea
Gardens-based training day, soon to be announced, is necessary for those entering the Emergency Service, Recovery or Calling sectors of the Red Cross, which typically requires psychological training, Working with Children and Police Checks.
The local Red Cross
meets at the Country Club on the fourth Monday of the month, which in May immediately precedes the ‘Biggest Morning Tea’, run by the Wednesday Morning Craft Group, and will feature most of the community service groups in town.

Doubts About
Growth
THE concept of growth is probably one thing that young economists are taught and then our politicians grab hold of it and treat it as if it’s the missing item that they are striving to produce in order to boost the economy, pay higher wages and have everyone economically better off.
It is a theory that takes a lot of thought to get one’s head around, but does it really work and for how long?
The theory states that immigration or greatly increased birth rates produce a larger economic pie and is said to work because the new people introduced to our society do so at the bottom rung of the ladder, which then lifts us all up one rung higher and therefore make us all feel better.
Certainly, the cash economy in Australia benefits with more people in it and this is the present cry that says we need more staff for the coffee shops and restaurants, hotels and of course the building industry.
Immigration pre-Covid was running at below 200,000 per annum with people on
specific visas for a fixed period.
Now hopefully being near the end of the Covid restrictions, those visas are held by 235,000 new entrants, which the Government wants to increase to some 400,000 people per year.
As these new entrants into our economy are virtually all at the unskilled level, mainly from those wanting to exit their country of residence in order to settle here for a better life, even though permanent residency is not offered at the point of entry, it is clearly expected by many.
So how does all this so-called growth benefit our economy?
New entrants at that level are most likely not to bring capital with them, therefore they need to be supplied with housing, money for food and necessities of life, which begs the question, who supplies those needs?
If that role belongs to the government, then it needs to be understood that the government only gets its money by taxing the working residents or, as more often is the case in this difficult time, they simply print more money and then hope to sell a bond for some investors to acquire, paying the government a capital sum for that product.
In fact, it is my guess that a lot of the money travelling through our economy is of that source.
It’s a debt that not only needs to be paid back but creates interest charges along the way.
So now we think, how do we house these people?
Virtually every week we seem to read that another major home building company goes into receivership and investors and
Dear Gillian,
THERE is so much variation in mirrors.
The mirrors in shops that sell swimwear, for example, would have to be the most unflattering mirrors in existence.
They have bright lights and no space to move around, so it is impossible to view how you look from the back.
The mirrors in Optometrists seem very flattering, but that may be because you try
potential homeowners are financially skinned because of that.
That also says if the big guys are failing, then where are the basic jobs that are supposed to be filled by our new entrants.
The big guys are going broke because they can’t make any money out of housing at these prices and we all know that the cost of raw materials needed for building is rapidly increasing.
So, if we are to build more homes, the prices will need to increase greatly.
Isn’t there already great angst in the community now about the cost of new homes?
So how is that going to affect prospective homeowners as the prices escalate.
When I was a boy, Australia’s population was well under ten million.
Today it is 26 million and gaining at something like 700,000 each year.
So, if we keep this growth thing going, where do we want to stop our population?
Is it 30 million, is it 50 million or is it 100 million?
How do you think that will affect the massive pollution issues we have now?
No chance of ever reducing the emission levels that we are pipe dreaming about presently, supposed to come down by 2030 and be nil in 2050.
Every thinking person should worry about growth projections but surely, they don’t want us to become another China or India or even an Indonesia.
That is the reason why so many people from crowded parts of our world are looking
on the frames without your script-specific lenses.
When you pick up the same frames fitted with their proper lenses, you realise just how deluded your poor vision has made you.
It's a harsh reality.
Very harsh.
Glancing sideways into a mirror makes you appear bigger than you are.
Glancing into your phone when the reverse camera setting is in place makes you look like Jabba the Hut.
There is so much variation in our reflection, that it's hard to know what we really look like.
Photos can distort our image too, so in some photos we look fairly decent, and in others we look like a hot mess.
Maybe your friend has a mirror that is particularly unflattering due to a number of factors including the lighting and angle.
It's what's on the inside that counts, anyway.
If you are a kind and loving person, you will always look beautiful to those who really matter.
Carpe diem, Jasminda.
to come here.
They have worked it out, so I’m wondering when the lights might come on for our present population in Australia.
Yes, many of our new arrivals are for the purpose of gaining a quality education and their well-off parents are paying the way for the two or three years of education here, but I’m sure that many may not want to return to their lands of lesser opportunity once they are qualified.
But that is the Government's issue to struggle with.
As a past owner of a number of grazing and farming properties, it was very obvious to me that our farmers were able to feed a population of 20 million but above that level our country needed to start importing many items of our food requirements.
Yes, our farmers heavily over produced many basic foodstuffs and of course exported that over production.
It would need a whole new article to argue that case, but the reality should be obvious that once the 20 million level was exceeded, we needed to buy feedstocks from overseas, just like we need to with petrol and diesel which now is accepted as normal practice - until something happens to interfere with supply.
Guess I’m just one of those thinking guys that has great doubts about the need for growth.
I would much prefer to live within our capabilities to produce here and not be crowded out by growth.
Service NSW bring mobile set up to Tea Gardens
By Thomas O’KEEFE
ONE day only sees the Service NSW Mobile Site set up camp in Tea Gardens, on Thursday, 11 May.
Open between 9am and 3pm only, an on-the-spot mobile service vehicle will be parked at 222 Myall Drive, presumably near the Council Library building, entering from Marine Drive.
“It’s good not to have to take a day trip into Raymond Terrace or Nelson Bay,” one local, who preferred not be named, told NOTA, referring to the
fact that a return drive, plus obligatory waiting times for most services, can eat up the better part of a short winter’s day.
Representing the latest in government-embraced technology, locals from the Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest, Pindimar, Bundabah and North Arm Cove areas will witness the luxury that slightly more populated centres have.
According to the Service NSW notification, “The Mobile Centre offers similar services to the physical site, including licences,
certificates and rebates.”
Anyone intending to take advantage of this rare occurrence should be wary of the possibility that the specific service they are seeking may or may not be available.
The official website names the following services, which should be taken to mean that these are the most likely to be available at the Mobile Service Centre: “Driver’s Licence, Photo Card applications and renewals; Driver Knowledge Tests; Working With Children Check applications; Applying for birth, death and marriage certificates; Savings Finder program to access more than 70 government rebates and vouchers.”
Mobile Service Centres do not carry cash, and any necessary payments can only be made by personal or bank cheques, EFTPOS, credit or debit card, with digital options likely incurring a ‘merchant fee’.

Booral Rural Fire Service boosted
THE Booral Rural Fire Service station has significantly boosted its Wi-Fi connectivity, thanks to a $4,000 donation from Stratford Coal.
The funding has enabled the firies to purchase two new mobile Wi-Fi boosters, extending the range of coverage and improving
network speeds at the Booral Rural Fire Station and the popular Driver Reviver site at Nerong Water Holes.
Wi-Fi Boosters extend mobile coverage to areas where the modem signal is low.
By installing this technology at the fire station, they now have stable and secure connectivity, which is
vital in emergencies.
Additionally, installing a booster at the Nerong Water Holes rest stop has been a game changer.
As society moves into being cashless, the fire service recognised a reduction in donations and inability for drivers to purchase cold drinks and snacks at the reviver site.
With the set-up of the Wi-Fi booster, the site is now enabled for card payment service, allowing drivers to pay for refreshments and make a donation.
Kathryn Massey, Deputy Captain at Booral Rural Fire Service, was delighted with the boost in network coverage.
“The new boosters were put to the test over the busy Easter long weekend and proved to be a success, particularly at the Nerong Water Holes driver reviver site.
“The booster enabled strong mobile service over that busy period, not only to process sales on the new square payment system but also to allow drivers to donate.
“The site saw around 1,000 people pass through who also enjoyed great mobile service.
a long time, so we are thankful to Stratford Coal for the donation to make this happen,” said Kathryn.
Booral Rural Fire Service has a long history in the community and brings together residents to protect the lives and property of their neighbours and community.
The volunteer firefighters undertake numerous training sessions to enhance community safety, including responding to fires, assisting at emergencies, and teaching the community about fire preparation and prevention.
Stratford Coal Operations Manager, John Cullen, was pleased to continue supporting the Booral Rural Fire Service.
“The team are there when our community needs it most, so it is vital that they have the best of equipment and facilities to do their job.
“As well as managing fire prevention within our community, they also keep our roads safer by encouraging drivers to take a break at the rest stop.
“We are happy we can help ensure these services continue to be offered to the people in our community,” said John.
Zonta Hunter Newcastle holds local fundraiser in Tea Gardens
By Thomas O’KEEFE
WOMEN’S and girl’s empowerment was the focus of the annual Zonta Hunter Newcastle fundraiser in Tea Gardens on Sunday, 7 May.

Jonesy’s Sparkling Brut, semillon, chardonnay, rosé, shiraz, botrytis, limoncello, and a delightful Moscato that tasted like a dreamy first date.
The effervescent Jac introduced each vintage’s backstory, as attendees enjoyed the mouthwatering morsels prepared by Taste Me’s Peter and Gillian, inside ‘Lovely’, the aptly christened and customised silver bus.
“We have wanted to boost our mobile coverage and speeds for get through the COVID isolations,” Denise told NOTA.
A little light rain hardly dampened the vibe as raffle prizes were awarded, to the collective sighs and cheers those hoping to snag one of the incredibly generous hampers, the lavender soap, the ‘mystery box’, or a gift certificate for ‘Helen’s on Engel’ B&B.
“Today’s funds go directly to local needs, including scholarships for women at Hunter TAFE, and helping to protect domestic violence victims in the Newcastle/Hunter area,” Club President Kate Magee announced.
The ever-energetic Helen Blackbourn hosted the perfect, golden autumn afternoon of leisurely socialising, and all present were evidently sated and satisfied.

By 2pm, the ‘prodigal sun’ returned, igniting the petrichor as the gathering commenced the ‘long lunch’, featuring a delectable baked ham, chicken wings, veggie tarts, quiche, and the ‘drunken fruitcake’, soaked in Jac&Jones’ liqueur muscat.
“Thanks to all, especially the most amazing support from the volunteers, including Jac&Jones, and we were all amazed by Taste Me’s incredible food,” Ms Blackbourn told NOTA.
“It was a wonderful day, made more wonderful by the people who came.”

The last round of the
sectional games in Pennants was played today with the First National Grade 5 Dolphins playing away at Hamilton North.
Grade 5 are certainly “on a roll” with another outstanding win to see them clinch first place in the sectional rounds.
They demolished Hamilton North 87-41 in a clean sweep.
Incidentally, the team of Peter Gurney, Bruce Murray, Chris Ross, and Colleen Ross scored an 8-pin in their last match against Raymond Terrace equaling the feat
of a Team in Grade 6 a few weeks ago.
Grade 5 will play their first sectional game at Raymond Terrace on 20 May.
Their first opponent is yet to be decided.
Grade 6 finished the season with a resounding win against Hexham, 9238, but it was to no avail as they missed the cut for the sectional games. They finished third on the ladder but will take heart with this result for next season.

FRIDAY SHAZAM!
7FLIX, 5.45pm
This kid-friendly fun-fest focuses on 14-year-old foster kid Billy Batson (Asher Angel). Separated from his mother at a carnival 10 years ago, Billy has not had a great run, but when he is finally fostered with a caring family, he is unexpectedly gifted the superpowers of a powerful wizard (Djimon Hounsou). Upon saying the word “Shazam”, these powers transform his body into that of an adult superhero (played with wonderful comedic timing by Chuck alum Zachary Levi, above). Hijinks, magic battles and heartfelt moments ensue.

Prepare to be transfixed by talented rising star William McKenna (Nowhere Boys, pictured), whose soulful, doe-eyed performance propels this excellent new eight-part drama. Based on the bestselling novel by Aussie writer Markus Zusak, who also oversaw the making of this quirky and uplifting series, it tells the story of homebody and taxi driver Ed, who spends most of his humdrum existence with his dog. One day, he receives a mysterious note on a playing card, setting him on the unlikely path of a suburban hero. Also starring Alexandra Jensen (Frayed) and Guy Edmonds (Wellmania), it features a crowd of captivating characters and a winningly mysterious premise.
TUESDAY THE SUMMIT
NBN, 7.30pm
Jaw-dropping snow-covered mountain peaks and the majesty of nature… with an aching insight into greed and betrayal. This high-octane action-adventure series celebrates its spectacular location on New Zealand’s South Island, while also tapping into the human competitive spirit – and thirst for cash. Fourteen strangers – including a sock designer, a marine scientist, a doughnut connoisseur and an outback nurse – set out to win $1 million in a cut-throat comp that sees them scale great heights, valleys and emotional depths to claim the money. Narrated by Jai Courtney, if you’re afraid of heights it’ll be a dizzying experience.

WILD weather proved challenging for the crews participating on the last day of the NSW Yachting Championships and Act 3 of the TP52 Gold Cup at Sail Port Stephens.
23 yachts contested the three-day Windward-Leeward Series, which made for some great sailing off the coast with vantage points from Box to Bennetts Beach being enjoyed.
Principal Race Officer Denis Thompson said, “I was watching the weather models all night and we were not expecting the weather to get fresh until around 1pm.”
