Piggy Races run for charity
By Thomas O'KEEFE
RACING for charity took on novel meaning at the Charity Pig Race Day, held once again at the Tea Gardens Country Club on Easter Saturday, 8 April.
It was a great pig day out for everyone, with clowns, face painting, a mechanical bull, and the star attraction of the porcine prowess from Noah’s Thoroughbred Racing Pigs, with proceeds going to the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) and Variety.
The pigs and their performance formed the basis of a series of raffles and auctions, the main

beneficiaries of which were the youth of the SLSC.
“These Country Club pig races are the biggest fund-raiser of the year for the Life Savers,” Amanda Osmond, who has been Junior Activities Coordinator at the SLSC for the past five years, told NOTA.
“This year the funds will help construct a purpose-built shed for our Youth, who are Life Savers out of Nippers but not yet adults,” Ms Osmond added.
At the time of printing, the Pig Races had raised $8000 for the SLSC.
“This is the fourth year we’ve run the pigs at Tea Gardens, after losing a year to COVID,” said pig handler Jeff Bakon (yes, that is his actual name, he provided ID to prove it), from Warwick, who has been running thoroughbred piggies for eight years.
“We hand feed them from four weeks of age, and they will have a racing career of about three months,” Mr Bakon explained, adding that the six-race card was the first outing for the seven cute little maiden racers.
The maiden racers had a little trouble navigating the loop, however, once they found the official finish (a tray of milk), the porcine prancers clambered for the creamy goodness as the large crowd of pig-punters erupted in cheers.
While the seven porky pacers are yet to be
named, a few onlookers suggested some meaty monikers, including ‘Amy Swinehouse’, ‘Peter Porker’, ‘EinSwine’, ‘Ham Solo’, ‘Chewbacon’, ‘Hamlet’, and, of course, ‘Sooey’.

publishing an apology to Mr Roberts.
The proceedings centred around an episode of the ABC’s Four Corners program, entitled Obeid Inc, which aired in November 2021.
The episode explored links between a number of planned residential developments on the NSW Mid North Coast and the Obeid family.
Mr Roberts was interviewed for the program, with questions raised about his involvement in development plans for land at Sanderling Avenue, Hawks Nest; both in his capacity as CEO of the Karuah Local Aboriginal Land Council and as a MidCoast Councillor.
On Tuesday 4 April, the ABC offered the following apology on their website.
“On 8 November 2021 the ABC broadcast a program called Obeid Inc and published a transcript of that program on the ABC website.
“The publications included an interview with Mr Len Roberts, a First Nations person, and a former Councillor of the MidCoast Council, and a member and former CEO of the Karuah Local Aboriginal Land Council (KLALC).
“The publications contained allegations concerning the Obeid family’s role in property developments on the north coast of NSW.
“The ABC did not intend to suggest that Mr Roberts was working or co-operating with the Obeids or that Mr Roberts behaved in any way inappropriately in his roles as a former councillor and former CEO of the KLALC.
“If the program did inadvertently make
Kate Washington MP joins NSW Cabinet
By Thomas O’KEEFE
LOCAL State Member Kate Washington was officially sworn into the historic NSW Cabinet of the new Minns Labor Government in Sydney on Wednesday, 5 April.
Ms Washington joined the historically diverse cabinet with dual portfolios as Minister for Families and Communities and Minister for Disability Inclusion, after being part of the Shadow Cabinet for seven years.
“I am incredibly honoured, and looking forward to the important work that needs to be done.
"Having held these responsibilities as Shadow Minister, I have an understanding of
the complexities and challenges in what lies ahead,” Ms Washington told NOTA.
“The current state of the child protection system in NSW is not achieving the outcomes that vulnerable families deserve,” Ms Washington said, adding, “the Minns Labor Government puts vulnerable kids at the heart of its decision-making.”
On Disability Inclusion, Ms Washington said, “I will work with Bill Shorten to make the NDIS work better for everyone, with a significant focus on increasing employment for people with disabilities,” referring to the Federal Minister for NDIS and Government Services.
When asked how her Cabinet positions
those allegations about Mr Roberts the ABC unreservedly withdraws them.
“The ABC apologises to Mr Roberts for any hurt or embarrassment caused by the publications.”
A spokesperson for the ABC told News Of The Area, “The proceedings were commenced by Mr Roberts’ statement of claim filed in September 2022, which set out his concerns about the program.
“The ABC filed a defence in November 2022.
“The proceedings have since been resolved to both parties’ satisfaction on confidential terms including discontinuance of the proceedings and an agreed statement on the ABC Corrections and Clarifications webpage.”
Mr Roberts told NOTA he hopes the public apology from the ABC will “help restore” his reputation on the Myall Coast.
“I’m hopeful that it will be seen that I was
wronged,” he said.
“The defence lodged in the Federal Court case by the respondent did not ever say that what was broadcast in the Four Corners program against me was true.
“Defences centred on issues of ‘public interest’.
“I was never able to understand how what was said about me could be in the public interest.”
Mr Roberts has maintained his innocence since the program aired.
“I hope that the outcome will be to restore my good name, recognising that I have always denied the truth of the allegations made about me in every respect.
“The public record shows that despite statements to the contrary I did declare a conflict of interest when the DA came before Council as required under council obligations in the matter as an Aboriginal and former CEO of KLALC.”
impact her role as Member for Port Stephens, Ms Washington affirmed, “My primary role is as the Member for Port Stephens, and I will never forget that; I will always be there for them.
“It’s also good that our community will have a voice at the most powerful table in the State.” Ms Washington’s family watched as Kate and the new Minns Cabinet, historic in having 50 percent female Ministers, were sworn in by NSW Governor Margaret Beazley.
“It’s great that our Cabinet finally reflects our community, with a range of ethnicities and geographical origins, it is a truly representative cabinet,” Ms Washington reflected.
“Whilst I am a Minister, I still want people to keep calling me ‘Kate’,” Ms Washington said, after a “whirlwind” few days in Sydney, adding, “I am very glad to be heading home to Medowie for the Easter long weekend.”
Means testing for your aged care pension & your family home
by Cavelle Lindsay
We are often asked whether the value of the family home should be included in the assets assessment when determining the amount to be paid when going into care. The answer is part of the value of your family home may be counted in the assets assessment.
If you keep your family home, a capped amount of $186,331.20 (as at 20 September 2022) or the net market value of your house (if lower) is included in your assets assessment. If you are part of a couple, each partner is considered to own half of the home, so half of the net market value or the capped value is included as an asset – whichever is lower. The cap is applied to each half of the home.
Your home won't be counted as an asset if it is occupied by a protected person. A protected person
includes:
• your partner or dependent child
• a carer eligible for an Australian Government income support payment who has been living in the home with you for at least two years
• a close relative who is eligible for an Australian Government income support payment who has been living in the home with you for at least five years.
A dependent child is a child who is under the age of 21 years.
It's important to note that the rules around the asset test can be complex and may vary depending on a range of factors. We suggest you seek advice from an aged care financial advisor for your individual circumstances.

Police and Community Charity Golf Day 2023
By Thomas O’KEEFE
SWINGING for charity was the Good Friday deed for many this year, at the Police and Community Charity Golf Day at the Hawks Nest Golf Club on 7 April.
“The Golf Day is run by the police and the community, to raise money for the community and local charities, people in need,” Trent Moffat, local Senior Constable and Lockup Keeper, told NOTA.
“Not one cent goes to the police, it is about local people supporting local people.
“The local police rely on the community for support, and we want the community and the police to maintain a good relationship through events like this,” Mr Moffat said.
Jeff Farmer, a local policeman from 19882001, co-founded the event in 1988 and still resides in the area.
“The people of Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest and surrounds have been the most giving to charity, per capita, compared to anywhere else,” he said.
“This sort of thing used to happen all over the Hunter, but this is now the only ‘Police and Community’ event of its kind that still happens,” Mr Farmer told NOTA.
Since its inception, the Police and Community Golf Day has raised an accumulated total of more than $250,000, according to the organisers.
This year’s major sponsor, Hawks Nest First National Real Estate, led the way with a host of local businesses sponsoring holes, and donating a host of impressive raffle prizes.
“We’ve supported the local school and preschool, the Community Bus, Meals On Wheels, local ambulance services and the Westpac Helicopter, donations to brain cancer research, and to individuals and kids with illnesses,” Mr Farmer added.
Stephen Mount, local solicitor and organising committee member, told NOTA, “We are pleased to see up to 140 golfers who had joined the competition, coming from all around the Hunter.”
This year’s event raised over $20,000, going to the Tea Gardens P&C Association and other local beneficiaries.
The next event at Hawks Nest Golf Club, which brings hundreds of tourists to the area, will be a Kids Disco, held on 13 April.

‘Emotion’ catamaran steps mast
By Thomas O’KEEFE
STEPPING closer to the ocean, the locally built catamaran ‘Emotion’ had its mast ‘stepped’ at Hawks Nest’s Pelican Park Wharf on Monday, 3 April.
In the dismal, wintry morning, the 21.5m twillfinished carbon fibre mast was ferried from Carrington, in two sections, upon John Lyall’s oyster barge, then
hoisted onto solid ground by Lofty Cranes.
Local carpenter Winnie brought the third and final piece, the boom’s furler, by road, telling News Of The Area (NOTA), “It’s probably worth more than my car!”
Boat builder Nigel Holt, with Emotion owner Rob Cave, guided the pieces to safety, then prepared the complicated electronics and connections for the stepping
later in the day.
At mid-morning, Emotion left Tea Gardens public jetty, glided under the Singing Bridge, and sidled silently up to the Hawks Nest wharf.
The catamaran’s sleek ‘Matterhorn White’ paint job, courtesy of Ian Car, conjured the visage of a spaceship, crossed with a manta ray, when viewed from the front.
“The mast weighs 300kg, and its fully-assembled 21.5m won’t fit under the Bridge,” Mr Cave informed NOTA, alluding to the Singing Bridge’s 10.6m safe clearance limit.
“It was actually my first ‘voyage’ as we said ‘Goodbye Tea Gardens, hello Hawks Nest’,” said co-owner Anna Cave.
“Since the launch, we’ve been amazed by the interest from locals, and want to thank everyone for their support and well-wishes,” Mrs Cave told NOTA.
“’Stepping’ is the whole process of raising and attaching the mast, and we’re following a traditional attaching of a silver coin at the mast’s bottom,” Mrs Cave
RFS seeks recruits and fire awareness
By Thomas O’KEEFE
VOLUNTEERS are being
keenly sought for the evercrucial service provided by the Pindimar/Tea Gardens Rural Fire Service, which held regular training exercises at Tea Gardens on Sunday, 2 April.
Training is held twice per month, at various locations around the Tea Gardens/ Hawks Nest/Pindimar area, and is both great physical exercise, and a solid social experience with the dedicated team of local volunteers.
This week saw recruits, seasoned and new, practicing the art of ‘bowling and rolling’ the fire hoses, then shooting down practice targets with the high-pressure water jets.
According to the RFS,
the statutory ‘fire season’ ended as of 31 March, however, human calendars are meaningless to Mother Nature.
“The last two and a half years of rainfall have created an extreme fuel load,” Brigade Captain David Bright, who became Captain only five months prior to the devastating 2019/2020 fire season, told NOTA.
Captain Bright referred to the La Nina weather event, which brought the extended heavy rains that have caused extraordinary vegetation growth.
“Combine that with a predicted mild winter, and we will have a very high fire danger period coming up,” Captain Bright added, saying, “a ‘mild winter’ means low
rainfall, very dry and perfect for vegetation to become fuel.”
The end of the RFS’s statutory Bush Fire Danger Period, which officially runs from 1 October to 31 March, means that fire permits are no longer required, however landowners planning to burn off still need to notify their neighbours, and Fire Control 24 hours beforehand.
Captain Bright and Training/Equipment Officer Morrie Leembruggen are eager to find new volunteers for the local brigade.
“The average age of the Pindimar/Tea Gardens Brigade is 67,” Mr Leembruggen told NOTA.
“We’re keen to train up some young blood to keep the wheels turning in the fire brigade,” said Captain Bright,
“especially in the face of what’s likely to eventuate this year.”
Information on how to join can be found via the Pindimar/Tea Gardens
explained.
The silver coin was donated by Paul Johnson, a retired policeman from the Central Coast.
The morning’s wintriness yielded to a trademark sunny Hawks Nest afternoon, as rigger Bart, from NZ Spars & Rigging, ascended the mast to ensure the connections.
The sails and jib will be added in coming weeks, after which Emotion will move from the estuary into the bay to begin sea trials, one ‘step’ closer to her ambition of sailing around the world.

Autumn Great Lakes Food Trail returns
By Thomas O’KEEFE
FOODIES, families and discerning wine connoisseurs alike will find plenty to do after Easter these holidays, with the Great Lakes Food Trail returning on Sunday, 16 April.
Food producers along the Trail look forward to welcoming visitors to sample and purchase their goods, with ‘hubs’ located at Bulahdelah, Topi/Bungwahl,
Wootton and Forster.
“The Food Trail usually brings around 1000 people to the area,” Deputy President of the Great Lakes Food Trail, Dale Bradshaw told NOTA, highlighting the importance of the event for the region’s economy.
“You can visit all in one day, taking about an hour from Bulahdelah to Forster, plus time to stop at locations along the way,” Mr Bradshaw told NOTA.
The full gamut of gourmet foodstuffs can be discussed and experienced, such as the wine from Old Inn Road at Bulahdelah, cheese from Barrington Coast Creamery, and the market garden
Farm. Consumers can range from The Coastal Brewing Company in Forster, where beer is centre-stage, to the undulating Great Lakes Paddocks at Wootton, or see the alpacas at Topi Open Range Farm, where several more local producers await, ready to chat and offer visitors chances to try and buy top quality local farm
produce.
“The producers are very excited to be welcoming locals and visitors to their farms and businesses,” Sue Williams, President of the Food Trail, told NOTA.
“The Great Lakes Food Trail gives people the opportunity to hear, see firsthand and ask producers and providores questions, an experience the whole family can learn from and enjoy.”
After losing three years to poor weather and COVID, the
Food Trail is now in its seventh year, and, as Mrs Williams told NOTA, “People can garner a greater understanding of the region’s produce and, at the same time, help raise awareness, stimulate demand and strengthen markets for producers and providores of the Great Lakes/Barrington Coast region.”
More information can be found on the Great Lakes Food Trail website at https://www. thegreatlakesfoodtrailnsw. com.au/.

Pindimar Boardwalk in disrepair, vandalised
By Thomas O’KEEFE
VANDALISM, rot and time have wrought destructive effects upon the boardwalk that links Pindimar North to Pindimar South, with the latest case reported on Good Friday, 7 April.
Unofficial reports from locals in the area suggest that at some time between Good Friday evening and Easter Saturday morning,
planks from the Boardwalk were removed, while some well-meaning locals have attempted to fix the gaps.
However, seeing at the boardwalk as a whole, it is difficult to determine if the damage visible along the entire span is due to vandalism, or extensive weathering.
“The boardwalk is rotting in several places, but this is to be expected,
given the environment,” said Vivian Panhuber, President of the Pindimar Bundabah Community Association (PBCA), referring to the corrosive effects of saltwater and oceanic tides among the mangroves.
“The MidCoast Council approved a budget of $175,000 to restore the boardwalk, but that was in late 2022, and any action was pushed to March, and it
Special Easter Bunny visit
By Thomas O’KEEFE
EASTER spirit was enjoyed all around the Myall Coast, with the Easter Bunny making a special appearance at the Tea Gardens Hotel on Easter Sunday, 9 April.
“We happen to know the Easter Bunny personally, and he came to lead the kids in an Easter egg hunt,” said Ben Hanson, Publican of the Tea Gardens Hotel.
Clubs and associations all over Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest, Pindimar and surrounds celebrated Easter and the start of the school holidays amidst the dynamic early autumn weather, with the rains cleared off by blustery winds in time for the Bunny’s visit.
Good Friday saw a full house at the pub, with Newcastle-based covers band ‘Barracuda’ holding a tribute
to Fleetwood Mac on Easter Saturday night.
“It has been a terrific Easter trade, and great to see so many happy families in town,” Mr Hanson told News Of The Area.
Mr Hanson likely shares his sentiment with all touristfriendly businesses in the area, optimistic that the dark days of the COVID pandemic are behind us, and the local economy can flourish again.
is now April and nothing has been done,” Ms Panhuber told NOTA.
The boardwalk was originally built in 2004, by a volunteer workforce of 62 locals who put in a total of 2200 man-hours, bringing the total cost to $15,000 ($10,000 of which comprised a grant from the Great Lakes Council) less than twenty years ago.
A patchwork of plywood
on the southern end of the boardwalk represents Council’s most recent attempt to fix gaping breaches, the result of several cross-planks rotting away.
In some spaces, rusty screw and nail heads protruded hazardously from the walk, a clear and present danger to pedestrians and cyclists alike.
Underscoring to the serious safety concerns
plaguing the boardwalk, Ms Panhuber also added, “It is the only refuge for pedestrians in case of a bushfire, unless we all just wade into the bay.”
The Pindimar boardwalk is the only direct connection between North and South Pindimar, the only other route being the 7km road up the hill and through the fireprone eucalyptus forest.
As the Easter-specific festivities come to a close, further events planned around town include two kids’ discos, one at the Tea Gardens Hotel on 11 and 18 April, and one at the Hawks Nest Golf Club on 13 April.
Adults also still have plenty to look forward to, with more coastal talent in the form of Forster-based nine-piece band ‘Big Fins’ set to bring down the house at the Tea Gardens Hotel on 15 April.
No doubt, given the cascade of calamities that have affected the tourist economy these last few years, all business owners in the twin towns must be pleased with the autumn holiday season so far.

Dorin’s Draws By Paul
DORIN
DEAR Jasminda,
I follow a local community page on social media because I like to know what's going on in the local area.
I've noticed, though, that there is ongoing racist and derogatory remarks.
I'm not game to comment back because then I'll be trolled.
Why do people have to be so horrible?
Gwen P.
Dear Gwen, REMEMBER the good old days when the
only opinions you heard were those from family and friends or the heavily monitored ones in the local paper?
It was easy, back then, to believe that most people had similar values.
Social media offers a plethora of opinions and unfortunately the notion of free speech has opened the door to keyboard cowards.
Unless the page has vigilant moderators, the trolls will continue to write obscene comments, probably with the intent of seeking attention to the detriment of those with common decency.
There's little point in engaging with them as you'll just be giving them the attention they desire. I would message the administrators of the page and alert them to their own rules.
If they don't have the time to effectively monitor their page, perhaps they need to remove it.
Check for asbestos before renovating
OPINION
By Marian SAMPSON
FOR me the battle against asbestos is personal.
I lost my father to asbestos five years ago - 35 years after his exposure to the mineral in his workplace.
Some of those he worked alongside have not been impacted.
Working in a science lab, the exposure was minimal.
So my message is, it doesn’t take much and everyone dealing with asbestos needs to take care.
Because, in my experience, mesothelioma, a cancer caused by asbestos,
can’t be cured and is a very hard way to die.
Unknowingly, many Australians expose themselves and their families to asbestos after undertaking DIY renovations without being conscious of its presence in their homes.
According to the Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency, a staggering one in three homes in Australia built before 1990 contain the deadly asbestos fibre.
Head of National Asbestos and Dust Diseases at Slater and Gordon, Joanne Wade, said that whilst people love to take advantage of a long weekend to finish home projects, it is important to know that when disturbed, asbestos poses a very real risk.
Loose fibres that are invisible to the naked eye can contaminate your hair, clothing and even surrounding furniture. Breathing in asbestos dust and fibre can be deadly.
“Every day I see clients whose lives are tragically affected by a danger they had no idea was under their roof,” she said.
Before you begin any home renovation project it is important to check that you are not ripping up deadly fibro that contains asbestos.
If asbestos is found in your home, contact a licensed asbestos removalist immediately.
If you have been diagnosed with an asbestos related disease, do not delay in seeking legal advice.
There is support and a fund for those suffering from asbestos related diseases thanks to the work of Bernie Banton (AM).
There are strict rules on the disposal of asbestos.
To find out how to dispose of asbestos, visit www.asbestossafety.gov.au.
Port Stephens Council advises the
following in relation to asbestos.
“If you are a homeowner or you're thinking about renovating, it's important to be aware of asbestos.
“The handling and removal of asbestos is a regulated activity and must be carried out in accordance with certain guidelines.
“Before commencing any building or renovating around the home, it's a good idea to seek out accurate information about asbestos.
“We recommend the use of a licensed asbestos removal contractor to test, handle and remove all asbestos-based building materials.
“Special precautions should always be taken, even for minor renovation works that don't require Council approval.
“To dispose of asbestos, take to Newline Road Waste Facility.”
Puzzling claims of river’s poor health
DEAR News Of The Area,
AS a 24-year resident of Hawks Nest who spends a lot of time in and on the Myall River, I found some of the claims in last week's article a little puzzling (River at Risk). Sedimentation in the eastern (shortcut) river entrance is not new.
There have been four major dredging programs in my time here. In every case the river mouth has silted up again relatively quickly, making it unnavigable by deeper
draft and displacement vessels.
This should come as no surprise.
The eastern entrance discharges through an extensive area of unconsolidated sand which is subject to constant wind, wave and tidal action.
Sand movement is inevitable and unavoidable.
Presumably it was this sedimentation which led to the decision to open the northern (Corrie Island) channel in 1909.
But this is a natural process which should
not be cause for undue concern.
Salinity in the lower reaches of the river will be naturally higher after periods of higher catchment rainfall – such as we have experienced over the last twelve to eighteen months. This creates a reservoir of discoloured, low salinity water in the Myall Lakes which can take months to clear through the lower reaches of the river.
I am not aware of any new information to suggest that the condition of the river water is markedly different to 2010 when extensive
studies by the Coastal Waters Science Unit from the Dept Environment, Climate Change and Water, responding to concerns from the Myall River Action Group, concluded that “ecological health in the river is excellent and equivalent to other comparable estuarine locations that have not experienced changed entrance conditions”.
Regards, Col NICHOLSON, Hawks Nest.
The Anderson Art Award exhibition is finally here
FOR the past five months, artists from across the state were called upon to enter their artworks in the Anderson Art Award competition.
Entries have now closed and the exhibition of the entries will open to the public at ‘The Gallery’, 81 Marine Drive, Tea Gardens from Saturday 15 April until Sunday 30 April.
“An amazing 150 entries were received for the two categories of two dimensional and three dimensional art pieces,” said Anderson Art Award coordinator Ian Morphett.
“This number of entries makes this the largest ever art exhibition on the Myall Coast.”
Two prizes of $3,000 as well as two $500 Highly Commended awards will be announced at an invitation-only opening event at the Gallery on Friday 14 April by Ms Kim Blunt,
Senior Curator of the Maitland Regional Art Gallery.
“This inaugural competition celebrates the contributions to the arts on the Myall Coast over many years by Lee and Rob Anderson,” said Ian.
“For example, in 2017 they purchased an historic cottage on the Tea Gardens Myall River waterfront and offered it to the Galleries in the Gardens (GiG) cooperative of 50 local artists to operate as a not-for-profit art gallery.
“Celebrating its 5th anniversary in 2022, ‘The Gallery’ has been a great success with high visitation rates, many art sales and frequent return visits.
“The art prize organisers thank our major sponsors, Sheargold Property Developments, Burton Automotive Group and Galleries in the Gardens, for supporting this wonderful event.”

Students shine as Easter tradition continues
q Students parading for Easter with families looking on.
By Thomas O’KEEFE
SCHOOL and community were the focus as students at Tea Gardens
Public School honoured the age-old tradition of the Easter Hat Parade on Thursday, 7 April.
Prior to the parade, schoolkids were all excited by the prospects of the parade and prizes, no doubt invigorated by the fact that they were all in mufti, owing to it being the last day before their much-anticipated Easter and school holidays.
The dynamic autumn weather was hardly an issue as the school’s 148 students paraded in their
specially-made hats underneath the COLA (Covered Outdoor Learning Area) at midday, with plenty of parents and family members watching on.
“The Easter Hat Parade is one of the longest traditions at the school,” Principal Mark Clemson told News Of The Area.
“It’s all about taking
opportunities to build community and school culture,” Mr Clemson added, informing NOTA that the school’s catchment includes the communities of Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest, Pindimar, Bundabah, as far south as Karuah, and as far north as Nerong.
It was obvious, as one teacher pointed out, that a lot of special
efforts had been made on the hats by many kids, parents, and grandparents.
The school’s students circled and danced under the COLA to a series of tunes, from classic rock to more modern fare, all kid-safe and chosen by the students and teachers.
A few families will be supercharged on sugar this holiday,
as eleven raffle prizes were awarded to the winners after the parade, mostly of chocolate egg hampers that had been donated by individuals and parents in the community.
P&C President Kelly Hurkett thanked all the community donations, announcing that a total of $1400 had been raised. “All of it goes to the school for books, clubs, and the students’ learning opportunities,” she said.
School resumes on Wednesday, 26 April, although some students may wish to participate in the 10am ANZAC Day March on Tuesday, 25 April, wearing their school uniforms to honour the day.
Young leaders among Tea Gardens students
By Thomas O’KEEFE
LEADERS of tomorrow from Tea Gardens Public School attended and gained some inspiration at the National Young Leaders Day in Sydney on Tuesday, 7 March.
Nine aspiring leaders from the school’s famed student parliament, the Speaker and eight Ministers, attended the event with students from Booral Public School, at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Sydney.
Young Leaders Day is designed to benefit students who possess leadership potential and show interest in developing it further, with many schools sending students recently elected or appointed to leadership positions.
The students also got to visit the world-famous Taronga Zoo while
they were in town.
With the last two years affected by COVID and floods, several attending students were thrilled to have the opportunity, and for some, just being in the big city for the first time was exciting enough, not to mention keeping some pretty impressive official company.
“Our leaders learnt from some extremely impressive Australians, from his Excellency Governor General to Caitlin Bassett, Nazeem Hussain, Chris Green and Dr Jordan Nguyen,” Principal Mark Clemson told News Of The Area.
“They taught the students important lessons about leading through listening and putting others first; the words of Dr Nguyen were a great reminder 'One life, persist to improve many’.”
“It was a fantastic opportunity for the kids to learn from people they look up to,” said Miss Caitlyn Kelly, Year 6 teacher at TGPS since
2018, who has accompanied the kids to YLD three times.
“I was excited about learning from other leaders,” said Year 6 student Isabelle Yuswak.
“Caitlin Bassett was my favourite speaker, she told us all about how to have good sportsmanship,” added Year 6 student Rhani Genner.
School Parliament Prime Minister Kade O’Neill was especially impressed by the work of Dr Jordan Nguyen, recalling, “He built a car for a kid with cerebral palsy, which he could drive with his eyes!”
No doubt we will see one or more of the TGPS attendees speaking themselves at future events.

It’s time to showcase Stroud!
By Marian SAMPSON
IT’S showtime at Stroud this April and members of the local farming community are ready to showcase their produce and animals.
The Stroud Show will run for another three, jam-packed days this year from April 2123, following the success of last year’s inaugural extended program.
On display and in the show ring, visitors will see over 800 cattle, 700 horses and 500 dogs!
There’s also a new and improved sideshow alley, masses of stalls, displays and entertainment for everyone to see and do, including a reptile display, amusement rides and an interactive dinosaur display for little Show goers.
President of the Stroud Show Association, James Harris said the long-standing tradition of showcasing livestock, produce, local
talents and products from the Stroud Valley region, and beyond, will continue in 2023.
“The show will be even bigger and better this year with two exciting new equestrian events added to the festivities for the first time,” Mr Harris said.
“Saturday will feature Olympic standard six-bar show-jumping which is anticipated to attract the best jumpers from across the country!
“While on Sunday, the Hunter Cup Campdraft will essentially be a group of finalists from the Hunter region campdraft events,” he said.
The Showground ring will be teeming with entertainment, giving spectators a chance to see “the best of the best” compete.
The three day Show boasts an extensive program including fast and furious post splitting, the entertaining
wife carrying competition, K9 high jump and a working dog trial.
Displays of fruit and vegetables, quilts and needlework will also be on show.
For beer enthusiasts, the home brew amateur competition is now a permanent feature at the Stroud Show.
Another highlight on Saturday will be the evening fireworks display and entertainment by nine-times Golden Guitar-nominated Sunny Cowgirls and one of Newcastle’s best rock bands, The Flattrackers.
The popular ute show returns in 2023, including a sound off, and this year’s categories include the Best Feral Ute, Best Tradies Ute and Best Themed Ute.
Mr Harris said there were opportunities for all members of the community to participate in the show with a range of competitions

FRIDAY BONDI RESCUE
TEN, 7.30pm
There’s possibly nothing more Aussie than Santa on the beach. After a hiatus during the height of the pandemic, this much-loved doco series celebrating Bondi’s lifeguards and the Aussie beach lifestyle returns tonight with its 17th season – and lifeguard Harries cruising the sun-soaked beach on motorbike wearing a Santa suit. The season premiere opens on a joyful note, as the throngs descend on the beach on Christmas Day. Later, Harries faces one of the toughest moments of his long lifeguarding career when he’s faced with a baby who has stopped breathing. A microcosm of life’s highs and lows, Bondi Rescue pulls at the heartstrings.

A hotbed of money, lust, partying and ambition, Sin City is the ideal stomping ground for this provocative reboot following a group of criminal investigators. The fifth instalment in the long-running franchise, CSI: Vegas formulaic and nostalgic, with crime lab scenes reigning supreme. To fans’ delight, CSI stalwart Marg Helgenberger bolstered the ranks by joining the cast, which also stars Mandeep Dhillon ( and Matt Lauria (Friday Night Lights, right), for its second season. Of course, there’s predictably some oddly compelling scenarios thrown into the mix. Tonight, in “Third Time’s the Charm”, the curious case involves the death of competitiveeating contestant.
SUNDAY GRAND DESIGNS
ABC, 7.30pm
This iconic series returns with its 20th season, celebrating decades of homeowners (wrongly) declaring: “We’ll be in by Christmas!”. Over the years, a smorgasbord of inspiring, different and usually very expensive builds have been documented. Sardonic host Kevin McCloud (above) still admirably sports an eagle-eyed enthusiasm and entertaining candour, and this new batch of builds and owners is intriguing as ever. Tonight, McCloud meets Colin and Adele, following the couple’s stunningly designed yet fraught dreambuild journey, which would reduce most to a broken mess. Of course, they declare that the emotional and financial turmoil was worth it.

Easter Raft Races
By Thomas O’KEEFE
GUSTY winds and choppy seas could not sour spirits on Easter Sunday, 9 April, as the annual ‘Anything that Floats’ Race was held on South Pindimar beach by the Pindimar Bundabah Community Association (PBCA).
At 10:30am, four teams of raft-racers braved cold water, racing around buoys, then returning to shore... and unparalleled glory.
The line-up included ‘Farrah the Flamingo’, the ‘Unicorns’, the ‘Toucan’, and the ‘Adventure Kings & Queens’ all the way from Chisholm.
The racers pushed, pedalled, and paddled the course, with a tight start dispersing quickly.
The Unicorns suffered a cataclysmic capsizing at the first buoy, despite a valiant effort upon their inflatable
steed.
Farrah the Flamingo had busy legs, while the Toucan lost a paddle and was momentarily marooned.
The ‘Adventure Kings & Queens’ led on their homemade assembly of SUP and boogie boards, prevailing as first past the post, and proclaimed winners once
ashore.
“It’s a great morning of community fun, despite the blustery conditions,” Vivian Panhuber, President of the PBCA, told NOTA, after calling the race.
“We had concerns about the wind and tides, but overall, there was great visibility,” said SES Stroud
Unit Deputy Commander Greg Snape, proud to have supported the Race for the last eight years.
The SES had flood rescue specialists on hand, just in case.
Next were two “first past the thong” Tug-O-War bouts, the kids’ ending in Easter egg prizes, the adults’ ending
in a graceful reminder of inertia and gravity.
The kids were then unleashed upon an egg hunt, with some spotting mother lodes while the rest vanished into the mangroves, halfway to Carrington.
The raffle, drawn by SES Dep Cmdr Snape, saw more
Easter goodies go out and raised funds for the PBCA.
“Raffle proceeds will go towards the repainting and replacement of windows on the Community Association Hall, and hopefully to some outdoor space paving... and a new toilet, if any is left over,” Ms Panhuber told NOTA.
