Tea Gardens on Monday 4 December. The café at Estia was festooned with balloons in a definitively mauve (not lavender, and not purple) ‘high-tea’ motif, as Olga was accompanied into the room by her daughter, Lynette Mildwater. Born in Woodstock, NSW on 4 December 1919, Olga’s family moved to Spring Hill where she went to school and was very active in the church.

“She was a good runner and often won first place with many prizes, and she was also a hospital volunteer with the women's auxiliary in Orange,” Lynette told NOTA. They later moved to Orange when Olga was a teenager, where she lived until 2020, aged 101, encompassing a very full life with 61 and a half years of marriage from 1941, and a prodigious progeny of four children, four grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren, many

of whom are now living across the country. “Mum moved to Tea Gardens after the death of her sister, to be closer to family, and into Estia in 2021,” Lyn explained. “Her favourite pastime is bingo, and she also cuts fabric for quilters in the Wednesday Craft Group,” Lyn added. For more than a century, Olga has been receiving this early Christmas present, and while most of us would be lucky to get just one, Olga’s clean country living has enabled her to receive her fifth letter from

the Governor-General of Australia, congratulating her on her birthday, as well as from the Prime Minister... but was still waiting on one from the King, surely en route from Buckingham. “She loved the party, was really happy, exhausted by the end, people enjoyed themselves for a few hours at Estia, a big day with happy tears, Estia’s staff did a marvellous job,” Lyn said. “She is caring, loving, and she's supported all of us at some stage in our lives, and a loyal friend.”

q A rare sight for many, the birthday message from Governor-General David Hurley and his wife.

Christmas is a happy time for children, but when children are exposed to arguments or negative comments between their parents, the happiness can disappear very quickly. Many children feel anxious, sad, and torn between their parents, and at Christmas, these feelings are heightened. Parents and extended family members can make Christmas easier and more enjoyable for children by: • Avoiding conflict – children want nothing more than to see their parents getting along (or seeming to get along). Avoid situations which will end in arguments, and if necessary avoid contact over the Christmas period and seek the assistance of family and friends. Remember watching their parents cooperate may be the best Christmas gift you can give your child. • Ensuring the children see or communicate with both parents and members

Thursday, 14 December 2023

of their extended families on Christmas Day – technology now provides us with many ways to connect with family. Where circumstances prevent children spending time with both parents on Christmas Day consider a video call, so the children can wish their parents Merry Christmas face to face. • If there are blended or step-families make sure that all the children feel welcome and included – remember that children don’t think like adults, and sometimes they need extra care to ensure they feel included and welcome in the celebrations. So think ahead, and take steps to ensure that, despite the family dynamics, your child, grandchild or family member can enjoy Christmas like every child should. A new sleigh for Santa By Thomas O’KEEFE

SANTA gets a new sleigh when he visits Tea Gardens, courtesy of the multi-talented Tea Gardens Men’s Shed, which will debut at the Lions Christmas Festival on Friday 15 December. Men’s Shed President John Adkins invited News Of The Area to witness the finishing touches on the gleaming sleigh, which will comfortably hold Santa and up to three kiddies for photo opportunities at the Lights Festival. Santa’s new sleigh was prepared by Barry Mclean, with design and construction directed by John Adkins. True to form, it sports a festively bright red veneer, with attractively contrasting black trim, courtesy of resident Shed painter Ray Curtis. “Tea Gardens Lions initiated the sleigh idea for the Lights Festival, and we took it and ran with it,” Mr Adkins explained. “It is made from recycled materials, reclaimed from items donated by the community, wherever possible.” “The Men’s Shed built it for free, and we can make it available for other community groups that may like to borrow it for Christmas in July or other events,” Ray Curtis added. It may even one day take part in a future resurrection of the Christmas parades that once passed through town, perhaps by mounting it on a box-trailer or as a float under the right conditions. While there is a dearth of proper reindeer in town to pull the sleigh, perhaps the mangaroo (man-sized kangaroo) that bounds around shearwater could drag the whole thing on his own, in lieu of reindeer in summer. Having the space and wherewithal to maintain the sleigh, the Men’s Shed will store

Gardens is preparing to hold its Christmas ‘Carols In The Park’ event at Tea Gardens’ ANZAC Park on Wednesday, 20 December. Starting from 6:30pm will be a free sausage sizzle, with the festive singing to start from 7:15pm. “At a time when we’re all pretty dismayed and disturbed at the way the world is tearing itself up, it's important for us to consider why we have Christmas at all; why Christ was born,” Reverend Richard Goscombe told NOTA. “It's a pretty staggering story: ‘Kid Born in a Shed Saves World’ – it certainly got my attention, and Christmas is when it needs to get the attention of us all, because he's the one that came to bring peace between nations, peace between communities, peace between families, peace to our own hearts and minds – peace for all. “So, grab a chance to come and celebrate the heart of Christmas down at ANZAC Park and join us for ‘Carols In The Park’ on Wednesday 20 December. “It'll be great to sing some carols, have some fun, and hear the story of where Christmas began.” Rev. Goscombe thanks the Tea Gardens Country Club and RSL sub-Branch for gifting the free sausage sizzle to the community. “Terry's going to be manning a free bus, and will happily pick up anyone who needs a lift to the Park.” Pick up information is on the St Andrew’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook. com/groups/195929288509402. “You can enjoy the free BBQ, but you're also welcome to bring your own picnic, blanket and chairs, or grab something at the local eats. “Come and enjoy the evening, as we celebrate how a kid born in a shed saved the world.” On Christmas Day, St Andrew’s welcomes all to join services starting with the Bennetts Beach Service at 6am, and Family Christmas Service at 9:30am at St Andrew’s, on the corner of Ogden and Witt St. “Feel free to join us and if you're not able to, I hope you have a truly happy, peaceful and blessed Christmas.”

Karuah coming alive with Christmas events By Thomas O’KEEFE

SEVERAL Christmas events are readying for the holiday period in Karuah, with multiple community groups pitching in. The Karuah Progress Association’s (KPA) Christmas Lights Competition, in its third year and born of the impacts of lockdowns, is already lighting up the place. “Karuah’s community pivoted to celebrate the holidays for our kids,” said

KPA President Breanna Landwehr. “New to the competition, the KPA has made over 80 pallet Christmas trees for the community to decorate, for free, and over $1000 in prizes are up for residences and businesses sharing in the festive season.” The KPA has brought on-board several corporate sponsors to donate prizes including the first prize Wangi Wangi Ferry Dinner Cruise for two (and $100 cash), and

a stage, which is currently erecting out the front, and will be used for community afternoons at other times.” The Karuah RFS brigade is also hosting Santa’s run around town on 23 December, starting at 10:30am at Alice Street. “We intend to move through Holdom Road, George Street and Peachy

Circuit, then Ironbark Estate, and finish at Roundhill Crescent by 11:30am,” Jim Semple, Karuah Rural Fire Brigade Captain said. “Times are approximate and could change, we will endeavour to do all streets, but due to safety reasons some dead-end streets might be missed.”

The fisherman’s paradise of Broughton Island By John ‘Stinker’ CLARKE

OVER the next couple of months Port Stephens will be experiencing a huge rise in population as visitors from near and far arrive to experience the wonders of this magnificent area. Many, I am sure, will be armed to the teeth with all the fishing gear to target the snapper off our coastline. Those with suitable boats will no doubt head to snapper central - Broughton Island. Before you head off there are a few things you need to know. Broughton Island has been a fishing paradise for as long as records have been kept. Firstly, the Worimi people, followed by the Chinese in the early to mid 1800s, then the Italians from 1893. Greeks and Europeans set up small fishing communities at the turn of the century. Frenchmen spent time on the island in 1906, introducing rabbits, in a failed attempt to discover a virus that would free the mainland of the ongoing rabbit plague. The Frenchmen left the island but the rabbits stayed

and continued to grow in healthy numbers grazing on the native vegetation. Rats invaded the island and became a major concern around the shacks and also to nesting birds, particularly the fairy penguin and the shearwaters. In 2009 National Parks and Wildlife took up the challenge with a baiting program to rid the island of the feral animals. All reports continue to suggest that the program has been a great success, which I’m sure would be greatly appreciated by the native flora and fauna. Referred to as Long Island by the commercial fishers,

Broughton still has much to offer, 150 years later. For recreational fishers the snapper fishing remains fantastic with thumping “reddies” swimming up from the bottom to smash lightly weighted baits metres from the surface. Big prawns, fresh bonito and squid baits will be attacked seconds after hitting the water. Rat kingfish can be expected to join the party accompanied by the odd monster kingy that hit the bait and keep going. Resident sand flathead litter the sand drifts to the north. The magnificent beaches

on the island are alive with cracker whiting that swim along the sandy stretches in less than a metre of water. Rock fishing provides drummer, groper and snapper for those who try. To preserve this wonderful fishery, bag and size limits are enforced along with possession limits. Possession limits particularly apply to those who remain on the island overnight or for any extended

period of time. Possession limits are equivalent to one day’s bag limit. If there are two in the boat your possession is doubled. Keep in mind that you are in a Marine Park and that certain areas that surround the island are designated Sanctuary Zones. Free maps are available from all Bait and Tackle outlets so don't get caught in the wrong place. Pleading ignorance rarely

works these days. Broughton Island is a fragile environment which demands respect from all who choose to visit. Contact Port Stephens Marine Rescue on leaving the Port, on your arrival on the island and again when you return. The eight nautical miles to the island can become very unfriendly at times. Stay safe and enjoy the remarkable experience.

THE Bureau of Health Information (BHI) last week released two reports – showing activity and performance for public health services in NSW during July to September 2023, and patients’ experiences of emergency care in small rural hospitals in early 2023. BHI Chief Executive Dr Diane Watson said the July to September 2023 Healthcare Quarterly results show continued improvement for patients receiving elective or planned surgery. “Since the same quarter one year ago, there has been a considerable decrease in the number of patients on the elective surgery waiting list and more patients receiving their surgery on time,” said Dr Watson. For example, in July to September 2023, compared with the same quarter a year earlier: • The number of elective surgeries performed was up 10.4 percent, to close to pre-pandemic levels. • 82.6 percent of all elective surgeries were performed on time – a 7.1 percentage point increase. • The number of patients on the waiting list who had waited longer than

clinically recommended decreased by 61.2 percent, to 6,937. Emergency departments (EDs) continued to see an upward trend in patients presenting with the most urgent clinical conditions, with increased numbers of triage category 1 and 2 presentations. “Despite EDs seeing larger numbers of very sick patients, 67 percent of all patients started their treatment on time – a slight improvement on the same quarter last year,” said Dr Watson. “However, patients spent a record amount of time in the ED, with 56.6 percent leaving within four hours – the lowest result for any quarter since BHI began reporting in 2010.” BHI has also released the latest results of the Rural Hospital Emergency Care Patient Survey 2023, which reflect the experiences of more than 5,100 people who received emergency care in one of 81 small rural public hospitals in NSW between January and March 2023. “Patients were very positive about the emergency care they received, although ratings for some important questions declined compared

with the previous survey in 2019,” said Dr Watson. Notable results include: • Most patients (94 percent) said, overall, the care they received was ‘very good’ or ‘good’. • 67 percent of patients rated how health professionals worked together as ‘very good’. • 71 percent of patients said they were ‘definitely’ involved as much as they wanted to be in decisions about their care and treatment. Additionally, almost half of patients (45 percent) thought, at the time of their visit, their condition could ‘definitely’ (23 percent) or ‘to some extent’ (22 percent) have been treated by a GP or other health professional. Of those 45 percent of respondents, the most common reasons given for not seeing a GP or other health professional were: those services were closed; or they couldn’t get an appointment within a reasonable time. Detailed results for Healthcare Quarterly and results of the Rural Hospital Emergency Care Patient Survey 2023 are available at bhi.nsw.gov.au

The challenges and pleasures of recording local history

q Rascals: Commercial fishers Ken Barry, Athol Sproule and Glyno Tarrant.

By John ‘Stinker’ CLARKE AMONG many of the pleasures writing history books has given me, has been the opportunity to meet many of the numerous men and women who have contributed significantly to the growth and development of Port Stephens. Listening to their stories and viewing their old photographs has been a step back in time to a wonderful period in our development as a nation. From the Worimi people, who first settled our shores and were such a significant, positive influence on the oyster industry, to the pioneering commercial fishermen, boat builders and light keepers. Broughton Islanders were a tough lot who ventured outside the safety of the port to motor and sail the treacherous eight nautical miles to an island surrounded by lobsters and fish. I have felt particularly privileged to have been welcomed into the homes and lives of these people and wish to thank them sincerely for their generosity and warmth.

There has been no work involved in writing these books, to me it has been a great experience. The pioneers of this area deserve recognition and the respect that they have earned. To put it simply, the folks that I interviewed, for all my books, were a wonderful

group of people who lived in an era that was free of many of the dilemmas associated with modern society. There was a mutual respect that was undeniable from one family to another, a genuine care for the welfare of others who shared their lives and experiences.

q Worimi oystermen. Vital to the success of the industry.

q Omnitae nonetur? Nonectae vita conet latur, cum adipidi sitaquas

The lifestyle that I uncovered was basically a struggle in tough times and was dominated by hard working, hard drinking, heartbreak and happiness. The closeness of the characters in this book was moulded by their reliance upon each other. Woven throughout this period in our history, that included two Great Wars and a Depression, existed a spirit that is truly Australian. These people could

always find something to laugh about when it appeared all was lost, a sense of ‘Digger’ humour that I think only exists in us. A fun-loving attitude that defines our character, an attitude that I hope we never lose. Pranks were a part of everyday living, never hurtful or demeaning. Not a day would pass when there wasn’t a good natured ‘set up’ on some unsuspecting soul who would

respond at some time in the future. I laughed at the craziness of it all and thought how much I wished that I could have been a part of it. Currently I am writing my fifth history book, ‘Marsh Road’, due for release in October 2024. ANOTHER successful running of the Bulahdelah Twilight Christmas Farmers Market had locals smiling on Saturday 2 December, with an array of offerings to tempt the palate and fill stockings. Despite initial rain, market organisers’ prayers were answered when skies cleared above the Big 4 River Myall Holiday Resort. With this the third iteration of the Christmas markets, locals and visitors came out in numbers to support local producers and community organisations. There was something for everyone including great food, Christmas treats, decorations, fabulously creative art and kitchenware, fairy floss, plants, sourdough bread, cheese, wine, handmade toys and lots more.

Santa also took some time out of his busy schedule to drop in and spend some time with the kids. The market was sponsored by the Bulahdelah Chamber of Commerce and the River Myall Resort. "We were very pleased q Nothing like a bit of fairy floss.

MYALL COAST News Of The Area

Taskforce established to tackle emergency department wait times THE State Government will establish a new taskforce to tackle emergency department (ED) wait times. The ED Taskforce will comprise health workers and NSW Health officials, from across the state’s various local health districts and specialty networks, including from regional communities. It will be tasked with identifying and implementing efficiencies, including initiatives to reduce unnecessary presentations, address bed block and improve patient flow, safely discharge patients more quickly, improve the experience of patients and staff in the ED, and move patients to parts of the system with more capacity where clinically appropriate. Minister for Health Ryan Park has instructed NSW Health to draft terms

of reference, appoint membership of the taskforce and set a first meeting date. The announcement comes after the release of two Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) reports and the latest Bureau of Health Information (BHI) quarterly results. The two AIHW reports show that over 2022-23, NSW reported the highest number of ED presentations of any state or territory in Australia (three million). The latest BHI data for the September quarter shows a record number of triage 2 category (emergency) presentations (118,772), and a 61 percent reduction in the number of overdue surgeries compared to September 2022.

A significant factor in the record demand on hospitals is the proportion of cases that could be treated in primary or aged care settings. Almost half of all presentations to EDs were either category 4 (e.g. sprained ankle, earache) or category 5 (e.g. small cuts or abrasions). A further BHI report on patient experiences in small rural hospitals shows that 45 percent of patients felt they could have been treated by a GP or other health professional. This will remain a focus of the ED Taskforce. “This Emergency Department Taskforce is the latest initiative in our suite of measures to improve wait times and access to care, including supporting and boosting our workforce; and embracing innovating initiatives to divert pressure from our

hospitals,” Minister for Health Ryan Park said. “Patients just want to receive the care they need and deserve in a timely manner. “Having people and their loved ones waiting around in our hospitals for lengthy periods of time is neither good for them, nor our staff, nor other patients. “I’ve made it a ministerial priority of mine that where we can safely improve access to care and treatment – including timeliness – we will do it. “I’m proud of our healthcare workers across NSW who have faced serious challenges over the past couple of years but continue to show professionalism amidst record presentations and demand on our health system.”

CHRISTMAS tidings call at Tea Gardens Baptist Church, with their Christmas Carols returning on Sunday, 17 December, commencing at 6:30pm. “There will be a free sausage sizzle from 5:30pm, so everyone can come along and join in the Carol singing,” said Sue Roberts. “Be treated to an evening of Carol singing, stories and festive fun as locals prepare for Christmas to celebrate the birth of Jesus,” Ms Roberts added. “We’ve been hosting this Carols event since 1996, despite the COVID gap, and this year we have a Christmas tree and special Baptist Church band with John Carter, Leone Keipert, Julie Hughes, Graham Brydon, Darrell Thornthwaite, Caroline Thornthwaite and Susan Carter.” “The band has been together for several years, doing a free monthly live concert in the Church hall, and they often perform at the Grange and nursing homes.” The Carols this year will specially feature one eleven-yearold performer, as well as items presented by several other local churches, including St Andrews Anglican Church, and the Uniting and Catholic Churches. The Christmas mood was high at the Baptist Church on Saturday, 9 December, with dozens of kids and family members building gingerbread houses. “A lot of people said there's not much Christmas stuff around,” Barb James told NOTA. Gingerbread tenants lay waiting for their domiciles, even as some succumbed to poor structural engineering, or stillgooey icing adhesive. “All the pieces were cooked in-house; the church is very generous and people brought in different ingredients each week." Powerful thoughts THE issue that is dominating discussion in our area is that of the offshore wind farm proposal for our Mid Coast location. With the pending closure of coal fired electricity generators in the near future, the question being asked is: Where is the replacement power generation coming from? Renewables is the quick and easy response and most likely the preferred option, but is that practical and probable? The worst possible outcome if this issue isn’t solved quickly is a gap in

production and resultant blackouts for all consumers. The Treasurer Dr Jim Chalmers said last month that the government's prediction that 82 percent of our electricity will be supplied by renewables by 2030 is now unlikely to be achieved. He went on to say that further action is required so we are able to reach that target. Energy Minister Chris Bowen is pushing ahead strongly to get offshore wind up and running as his method of filling the power supply void. Under the previous Government the solution was to build the Snowy 2 pumped hydro scheme, which is now well behind schedule. Its budget has also long since blown out. The Pioneer-Burdekin pumped hydro proposal for North Queensland is also in the consultative stage. This project reminds me of our locally failed Tillegra Dam proposal, which was dumped by the NSW State Government after they had acquired all the land that would have been flooded as well as land required for runoff and environmental purposes. The loss of some 50 homes would

LEON Bobako's opinion (‘Pool management change not adding up’, 7 December 2023 Edition) is worth a response. The MidCoast Council's consideration to transition Tea Gardens Pool management to a small operator or community group, despite recognizing it as a 'High Risk' endeavour, raises concerns. While public facilities like swimming pools, libraries, and garbage disposal often

run at a loss, they are integral to vibrant communities. Our own Midcoast Council would run at a loss if it wasn't for grants. As Mr Bobako wrote, "The current operator, YMCA, maintains a 'Low Risk' safety rating, with performance improvements, despite facing challenges like Covid management and pool renovations." Mr Bobako went on and wrote, "The Council's emphasis on monetary considerations overlooks the community's

be required for Pioneer-Burdekin to go ahead and understandably those unhappy residents are making their views heard. So, are there other alternative sources for electricity production that need to be investigated? It is well known that a group of Federal politicians recently visited Germany in order to assess the suitability of mini transportable nuclear power generating plants with the capacity to power 30,000 homes. These could be used to travel to locations in Australia experiencing power outages and set up to operate within hours of arrival. Several of these plants could be of great benefit when used in different locations and transported quickly by road or rail to supply the power needs of affected areas. The fact that they are nuclear is creating issues for the green elements in our society and a major political party whose members are distinctly anti-nuclear. Our near neighbours in South Korea have built eight active nuclear plants that operate 25 reactors.

However, when the government changed, the new group decided that renewable energy was their preferred way to generate power and set about extensive renewable installations. In May of last year, it was found that these units were being run at massive losses so asked the government to greatly increase the cost of electricity supply. That led to another change of Government and the new lot has embraced nuclear as a solution to reduce carbon footprint and inexpensive source of electricity. Since then, three United Arab Emirates have employed Korean nuclear technology plus a fourth is now under construction as their major method for production of electricity. Time is quickly running out for Australia to protect its power supply situation, so we must very soon have the discussion on the positives and negatives of power generation by the various alternative methods of production.

health and well-being benefits from such facilities. “Even as the Council assures no pool closure, the decision to seek community input post-management change seems untimely." He then further added, "The commendable standard, cleanliness, and efficient staff of the YMCA-run pool highlight the importance of experienced operators for community welfare. “The community deserves a facility

managed by a low-risk, experienced operator to ensure its well-being.” Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest anticipate exponential growth in the next ten years, housing development releasing of 700-plus home sites and increased patronage is currently driven by a $1 million swimming pool upgrade to facilitate disability-friendly and child-friendly swimming pools. MidCoast Council promotes summer reading

By Thomas O’KEEFE

MIDCOAST MidCoast Council Libraries Summer Reading Club is offering the chance for prizes to the most prodigious readers aged seventeen and under. The Reading Club annually encourages kids to read throughout the summer holidays, with a 2023-24 seasonal theme of a ‘Roomful of Stories’. “Reading for pleasure has so many benefits for children including improved concentration, literacy skills, imagination, and creativity and will give them a hobby they can enjoy for the rest of their lives,” said Alex Mills, MidCoast Council’s Manager Libraries, Community and Cultural Services. “You can borrow a huge range of books from MidCoast Council Libraries, with access to books, e-books, audiobooks, e-mags, and even movies, TV and music through the

libraries’ three apps, Libby, Borrow Box and Hoopla.” “These great free resources are a fantastic way to keep your kids entertained this summer and will give them the opportunity to fall in love with reading.” Literacy among Australia’s kids needs desperate motivation, especially in light of the recent 2022 OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). PISA, conducted every three years across 81 countries, 690,000 students worldwide, 13,437 in Australia, assesses fifteenyear-old students’ “ability to apply their Reading, Mathematics and Science knowledge and skills to solve real-life problems and participate fully in society”. Official PISA information shows Australian kids ranked barely above the OECD average in all three knowledge areas, and an apparent improvement

overall was actually the result of other nations dropping due to COVID impacts, rather than Australian kids actually performing better. Kids across Australia, let alone MidCoast LGA, can never read enough, and books always make great

thoughtfulness,” Kris Whiteley, President of the Craft Group, told NOTA. “This is just one day per year, and it's clear why they all keep coming to the group.” The crafters share the funds from the sale as donations that are given directly to major local community service groups at the Biggest Morning Tea in May, which this year included the Rural Fire Service, State

Emergency Service, Westpac Helicopter, Free Clinic Bus and the Cancer Council. The stage of the Hawks Nest Community Hall was piled high with donations gathered by the crafty ladies for the Salvation Army in Raymond Terrace. Salvos’ Envoy Ron Petterson visited with grandson Jack McDonald to greet the ladies and collect the generous donations.

Christmas presents. Summer Reading Club participants can register online at https://library. m i d c o a s t . n s w . g o v. a u / Events/Summer-ReadingClub, then visit their local MidCoast Council Library to receive a reading

calendar, the challenges, and challenges card to start their reading journey and fill up a reading log over the summer. Registrations close Saturday 20 January 2024, all materials must be completed and returned by 27 January, whereby

participants can be invited to the Summer Reading Club party and enter the draw for prizes. Forster Library will host the Summer Reading Club party on Saturday 3 February 2024 in the Civic Centre.

RSL LIFECARE sponsors the Club’s annual Versatility Day, and they also sponsored this week of bowls. 6 Dec The summer heat did not deter the 52 players today but there was a nice southerly breeze blowing to keep play bearable. The overall winners on the day with a score of 34 were John Moore, Neil Kibble, and Rick Islaub. The morning game was decided by the Highest winning score and with a score of 20 Paul Carter, John Yabsley and Doug Naylor were the winners. In the afternoon Peter Gurney, Greg Smith and Bruce Murray were the winners, having the lowest winning margin of just 1 shot. The Garden Eatery voucher was won by Paul

Carter. Thank you to the Garden Eatery for sponsoring this voucher. 9 Dec With heat wave conditions forecast for the weekend, the finals of the Club Triples and the Minor Singles took place this morning starting at 9am. I unfortunately missed the Singles final between Wayne Duggan and Colin

Hands but, it was a good game with Colin running out the winner 25-14. Having seen both players in their earlier matches, I thought that whoever won needed to bring their “a” game with them and bowl consistently. Forget the score, both these players can play. I was asked the other day who were the best players in our Club and with a few more inclusions it would be hard to go past the six players in the Club Triples final. It was a close game with the score locked at 14-14 at one stage and then the Greg Brown trio dropped an unexpected 5 from which they never recovered. Just about any side has experienced this phenomenon, but at this level it is difficult to play “catch-up” bowls. Greg’s side ran out of

ends, and they lost the match 15-27. Congratulations to the Club Triples Champions for 2023, Peter Gurney, Chris Ross and Cody Ross and commiserations to John Parkinson, Jeff Baker, and Greg Brown. In other news. This week will be the last game of organised bowling for the year. When play resumes in the New Year the Mixed Pairs competition will commence. Run in similar fashion to the Ryder Cup, players covered 36 holes in total, one round of 18 in foursomes, the other as singles, with the highest (not the lowest) scores being the winners. “It was the first time I've

played this competition, and it was great,” said Denise Sainty, a veteran player of 20 years. “I played with a friend from Hawks Nest, and had a really fun time against good opponents.” The Newcastle team is picked from all different clubs, including Merewether, Belmont, Waratah, Newcastle, Hawks Nest, and Maitland. “Mandy and I played

in foursomes together and won 5/3 (‘5 holes up and 3 to go’), while Helen and Katrina Skinner-Oyston (from Maitland) also won their foursomes game 2/1,” Denise explained the ladies' individual pair victories. “In the singles match, I won 2/1, but at the end of the day, the foursome score for NHDLGA was 8 and a half, while CCWGA was 9 and a half, so they won.” “Wyong’s course was wellpresented and the people

There were only a few arguments between playercaddy pairs, which is, really, all just par for the course.

CHRISTMAS WITH DELTA

NBN, 7pm

In her fourth festive extravaganza, it’s no secret that Delta Goodrem (pictured) adores Christmas. In tonight’s joyous occasion, the festivities are set to sparkle even brighter, with the much-loved singer promising “a few extra little surprises”, along with launching a heartwarming initiative called The Community of Kindness Christmas Campaign. It’s all about at inspiring small, meaningful gestures of good will during the holiday period, with Goodrem recruiting a slew of big stars to join her for the merrymaking.

Not all Bachelor episodes are the same; every fan knows this indisputable truth. When it comes to the moments that stand out – those more intoxicating and dramatic than rose ceremonies featuring tears and walk-outs or champagne-soaked soirees bubbling with declarations of love and/or heartbreak – it’s when the loosecannon relatives finally come into play. When the bachelorettes’ loved ones divert from the script and drop truth bombs, it’s the stuff of gold. Tonight, in a movie-length instalment, Bachelors Ben, Luke and Wes (pictured) introduce their dates to their own families, and meet their parospective in-laws, all under one roof.

THE YEARLY WITH CHARLIE PICKERING 2023

ABC, 8.30pm

Whether you’ve been busy burying your head in the sand, or you’ve followed every news thread this year like a hawk, there’s fun and hijinks to be had for all in this biting and fun wrap-up of the year’s headlines. It’s an annual tradition for Charlie Pickering (pictured) to gather together a group of insightful and funny folks to try to make sense of the year that was and tonight’s offering promises laughs and amusement galore. Let’s face it: there was a lot going on in 2023, but Pickering is here to take his pick of the most bizarre and memorable. With the help of comedy duo Roy and HG, film critic Margaret Pomeranz and comedian Rhys Nicholson, expect mushroom gags and soccer silliness aplenty. 1512
