Finalists regional New South Wales, Sydney. “It’s a great achievement for our business and staff to be selected and be up against other restaurants from all over the state. “We’re extremely grateful that the local community has continued to support us since 2003, without them, we wouldn’t be where we are today,” Jenna said. Like many other hospitality businesses, Mumm’s on The Myall was hit hard by the pandemic, which left Jenna and her husband Nathanial anxious for the future. “It has been a really tough few years; having our restaurant close for lengthy periods of time twice and having to change to offering takeaway only. “It was hard not knowing what was going to come next and constantly adjusting to the rule changes,” she said. Ms Menzie says the pandemic was scary for not only herself, but the existing staff too.

Council’s Senior Land Use Planner Alex Macvean said the submissions received during public exhibition of the Draft Rural Strategy were being reported to Council in a coordinated manner to ensure consideration can be given to the matters raised and how these may result in amendments to the strategy before adoption. “Adoption of the final amended Rural Strategy, by September 2022, will enable commencement of the MidCoast Local Environmental Plan and Development Control Plan programs in 2022 and exhibition of these documents in 2023,” Mr Macvean said.

FROM Page 1 new residential developments should comply with existing bushfire legislation. The service’s request came among public submissions to Council’s draft Rural Strategy Rural and Waterways Zone Criteria and Standards, due for adoption next month. The NSW Rural Fire Service said to Council, where: “rural zone changes create new (or additional) dwelling opportunities on rural lands, Council shall prepare a bushfire report, outlining if those new residential opportunities can comply with the requirements of bushfire legislation and associated Planning for Bushfire Protection guidelines”.TheCouncil noted this advice, however believed it to be outside of the scope of the Rural Strategy and considered it “unnecessary and unreasonable”.ANSWRFS spokesperson told News Of The Area that regardless, the NSW RFS would continue to work closely with the MidCoast Council to ensure appropriate bush fire protection and management strategies are considered and incorporated into any and all future residential developments in bush fire-prone areas. “This is in accordance with current legislation (Planning for Bush Fire Protection Guide 2019) to ensure that bushfire risks are considered during the rezoning and strategic planning process,” the spokesperson said. Public exhibition for the draft rural strategy was from 30 August 2021 to 28 January 2022, with the community commenting on the rural and waterways zone criteria, land uses and development standards. During the 22-week public exhibition, 430 submissions were received, including five from State agency Throughoutorganisations.theengagement, the public discussed many issues that were classified as the following:•General submissions, rezoning requests, urban release areas and the villages of Bundook, Bunyah, Markwell, Mt George and Newells Creek; • Rural and Waterways Zones- zone criteria, land uses and development standards; • Environmental Zones- Zone criteria, land uses and development standards and; • Paper subdivisions

MULLANE & LINDSAY TAKING THE LEAD Monetary policy and cash rate decisions are made by the Reserve Bank Board and released at 2.30 pm on the first Tuesday of each month. Coincidentally, the Melbourne Cup falls on the first Tuesday in November, and both can potentially cause pain to one’s hip pocket nerve. Cash rate decisions impact on our family law clients also. Orders for the payment of money usually provide a time for payment and what happens if there is a default. Interest will usually be payable on the balance of the money that remains outstanding after default and if the order does not set an interest rate, it is calculated in accordance with the Family Law Rules. These provide that:1. Interest is payable from the later of the date of the order or when the obligation to pay money takes effect. 2. Interest is calculated in six-month periods: 1 January to 30 June; and 1 July to 31 December; and 3. The rate of interest is 6% above the cash rate last published by the Reserve Bank prior to the commencement of the six-month period for which interest is being calculated. Currently, the default interest rate is 6.85%. Unless the order specifies to the contrary, simple interest shall accrue, not compound. When negotiating settlements clients should consider the contingencies in the event of default. Such contingencies might include a charge over property; or the enforced sale of real estate; default interest on unpaid money or a percentage of the equity in a property in lieu if markets are volatile; and ensuring they can meet their obligations before committing to orders. We can assist you when making these choices. Liability limited by a scheme approved under Professional Standards Legislation Interest in the first Tuesday of the month by Mark Sullivan

The first report was presented to Council on 25 May, with the Rural and Waterways Zones report presented at Council’s July meeting.

By Tara CAMPBELL MIDCOAST 2 Tops Landcare is urging landholders to improve the health of paddock trees. The Koala Paddock Tree Regeneration Project is an attempt to protect the sparse habitat left for MidCoast koalas, and is managed by Project Officer Lauren Booth. “Paddock trees are an integral part of both agricultural and natural landscapes as they provide shade and shelter to livestock, prevent erosion, and store carbon, as well as being a valuable source of food and habitat for wildlife,” Ms Booth said. Koalas are known to use paddock trees, particularly during breeding season, however given age, drought, disease and pests, many isolated paddock trees are dying. “Improving connectivity of trees for wildlife across the landscape is vital, especially for koalas, as they are extremely vulnerable while on the ground,” Ms Booth told News Of The Area. This project will give many landholders the opportunity to fence off a selected paddock tree, controlling access by livestock, while allowing access for wildlife. Fence design and layout will be codesigned with landholders to ensure stock still benefit from the shade the tree currently provides, with the kit provided by the project. This project will use the benefits of natural regeneration, scientifically monitoring the regrowth in a three-year period. Ms Booth says that MidCoast 2 Tops will be looking for improvements in biodiversity for both plants and animals. “The aim of the project will be to collect data on regrowth, create small patches of bushland to act as a safe refuge for koalas and other animals, improve existing wildlife corridors, and ultimately grow trees that will replace the once-isolated paddock trees when they“Oncedie. the patch of bush is mature and the fence removed, it will improve shade and shelter for livestock, and store carbon,” she said. The project will focus on landholdings in the MidCoast region, in areas of regional koala significance, with paddock trees that meet certain criteria. THE Department of Defence is facing fines of as much as $2.5 million following the death of a Williamtown worker. The Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions has filed three charges in the NSW Local Court at Maitland, alleging Defence failed in its primary duty under the federal Work Health and Safety Act 2011, mishandling the psychological welfare of a worker who took his own life. The prosecution is filing on behalf of the Royal Australian Air Force technician who took his own life while on duty at the Williamtown Base on 28 July 2020.The criminal charges, which relate to alleged failures in managing risks to psychological health and safety, were laid following a Comcare investigation. The prosecution alleges the Department of Defence breached its health and safety duty under section 19(1) of the Commonwealth WHS Act by failing to provide, so far as reasonably practicable, safe systems of work, necessary training to workers, and information necessary to protect all persons from risks to their health and safety. The charges consist of one 'Category 2' offence, carrying a maximum penalty of $1.5 million, and two 'Category 3' offences, each carrying a maximum penalty of $500,000.Thematter is listed to be heard in the Maitland Local Court in late September.

Owners of multiple homes in the are are sometimes choosing to keep them empty or rent them on the shortterm market through AirBNB or through “holiday” real estate agencies instead of offering these properties for long-term rental contracts. According to the most recent census in Port Stephens 15.4 per cent of all dwellings are unoccupied. In 2021 Port Stephens Family and Neighbourhood Services assisted 848 people experiencing homelessness, including 317 children aged less than 16 years. The Federal Government’s Human Rights Department reports that older women aged 55 or more constitute the fastest growing cohort of homeless Australians. This trend increased by 31 per cent between 2011 andThe2016.agency said it was likely the trend would continue given the ongoing shortage of affordable housing, the ageing population and the significant gap in wealth accumulation between men and women across their lifetimes. Port Stephens Councillor Leah Anderson is keen to see some solutions for those facing homelessness in the community and wants Council to review several key issues.Port Stephens Councillor Leah Anderson told News Of The Area, “There is a recognised increase in the prevalence and risk of homelessness across the Port Stephens Local Government Area and I believe that we need to measure this and benchmark our region against other Hunter regions. “We need to identify what other councils are doing and what our options are to address these issues going forward,” she said. “There are issues with long-term rentals being sold as owners take advantage of what is considered as a ‘hot market’ and these renters have nowhere to go.” Anderson believes that innovation and creativity could be part of the solution to families losing rental accommodation and becoming homeless. “No one wants to see families living in cars in our region, no one wants to see workers leave the region because they cannot find long-term accommodation and security for their families,” she said. Cr Anderson said Council alone could not solve the problem, however she would like to see Council work with all levels of government to achieve the best outcomes for those living in the region.

SUNDAY VERA ABC, 8.30pm

It’s comforting that over 10 seasons of grim discoveries (aka dead bodies), our titular protagonist hasn’t changed much, especially in her appearance. After countless murder cases, Detective Vera Stanhope (Brenda Blethyn, righta) could be forgiven for being haunted by the horrors of her small, windswept town, turning up to work in track pants and gumboots. Instead, her olive-green trench coat and bucket hat live on. It’s one of the ways the charming series stays true to Ann Cleeves’ novels. There’s nothing like a spot of therapy to really get to the nitty-gritty of a character and add Fromintriguingsomelayers.thecreatorsAmericanHorrorStoryand Glee, this fast-paced procedural serves up drama from a Texan fire, police and ambulance department, but lately an emotional blaze has been smoking inside firefighter Owen (Rob Lowe). This week, the troubled veteran of emergency situations finally opens up about his childhood, uncovering a hidden fear that is tested when the 126 gets a call involving a clown at a young boy’s birthday party. Grace (Sierra McClain) reaches out to a co-worker after a devastating emergency call.

FRIDAY GARDENING AUSTRALIA ABC, 7.30pm There’s a season for everything in the garden (or planter box); when this beloved show goes off air once a year it takes time to acclimatise and adjust to Friday evenings without the enthusiastic banter and tips from presenter Costa Georgiadis (above). The hosts deserve a well-earned rest, of course, but the viewing public’s yearning for the plant-loving series never wanes. This week, Friday night is once again in full bloom because Gardening Australia is back. Breath a happy sigh of relief as Sophie dives into soil science, Costa visits a laneway transformed by love and plants, Tino resets the vegie garden for spring and Tammy meets home hydroponic growers. 1908

13 August Finally, the Newcastle District Pennant season kicked off today with the First National Dolphins Division 3 side playing at home to Karuah. The match was played on the synthetic green and it proved a bit tricky for the Karuah side. This did not deter them however as they played some great bowls to put the match right up to the locals. Karuah won one game 20-14 and another game was a close encounter with the Dolphins holding out to winThe18-13.decisive factor for the Master Board, however, was the dominating performance of the Cody Ross team winning 26-8, a score not reflecting on the quality of the game. The First National Dolphins won the match 9-1, with the Master Board reading, 58-41. The First National Division 4 side travelled to Hexham for their first match and with some untried new players and new combinations in the side, and the fickle greens, it was pleasing to report they were unfazed and came away with a cleansweepThewin.Dave Perry four won 23-14, The Mark Nightingale team won 2117, and the Doug Andrews side scraped home on the last end to win 18-17. The Dolphins won the match 10-0 and the Master Board, 62-48. Next Saturday the Division 3 side play away at New Lambton and Division 4 are at home against Fingal Bay.14Fine,Augustbutwindy, weather today greeted another good field of Sunday scoremanagedBengston,chosenlowestcontention.allfierce,CompetitionBowlers.wasbutfriendly,withwinningteamsinTheteamwiththewinningscorewasfortheprizemoneySueMorris,CraigandJohnSlaterthattaskwithaof12points

The usual Wednesday Nominated Triples competition, sponsored by our good friends at Tea Gardens Auto and Electrical, started off with a bang with a good field of 43 players but after 5 ends it degenerated into a soggy day with the rain making an unwelcome appearance. An early lunch was taken in the hope that play might resume, but the weather was having none of that and play was cancelled. Prizes were nonetheless awarded for the five ends played, decided by the Lowest winning margin. The winners with a margin of one point were Rob Jones, Col Cameron, and Chris May. The Garden Eatery voucher was won by Ross Barry. Our thanks to the Garden Eatery for their continued support.

q Tracy Blosdale is seeing first hand the impact of the shortage of housing in our region as houses are sold out from under tenants leaving them nowhere to go.

For both Walter and Tracy it hasn’t been easy and Walter’s story is far from over. The team at the NOTA will follow Walter’s progress.

DEAR Jasminda, One of my siblings is inviting his new girlfriend to our wedding and insisting she be in the family photos because 'she's the one'. The problem is he's been with 'the one' about 15 times before and now we have a heap of lovely family portraits with ex-girlfriends and we can't display them. I don't want to hurt his feelings, but I also don't want to pay thousands for photos that will end up redundant. Loretta Dear THAT'SLoretta, definitely planning ahead. I like it. I guess past performance dictates that you are no longer confident that he's found true love that will stand the test of time. And since you're no doubt paying for the photographer, you should have the final say.One solution, and an idea that is becoming more popular, is to have prewedding photos for the bride and groom. This takes away some of the stress of the actual wedding day and gives you a chance to have a trial run. You may even want to have some photos in clothes other than your wedding attire, because, really, how many wedding photos can be on display in a home? Another idea is to position her at the edge of any photos. You'll then be able to crop her out without too many issues if or when she's no longer in the picture (which may be the first time I've understood what that saying actually means). You could also have a bit of a heart to heart with your brother about his track record and hence your need to make some alternative arrangements on what is your big day.Don't feel too bad. Hopefully you only have one shot at this, so make the most of it. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

By Marian SAMPSON WALTER (name changed for privacy reasons) has been renting a home on the Tomaree Peninsula for seven years. He is a quiet man, one who has kept to himself.Healways paid his rent on time and had thought that he had found his ‘forever home’. Walter is now 81 years old and facing homelessness.Thisisthrough no fault of his own and at his age losing his home is daunting. Walter is just one of the many people displaced from a long-term rental because of the sale of the property. Walter doesn’t have a lot of possessions, he is living week-to-week on the pension. But where will Walter go? Real Estate Agent, Tracy Blosdale said while she sold the property, she felt compelled to help Walter. The decision to assist Walter has brought to light the very difficult nature of finding a newAfterhome.all, if a real estate agent can’t find somewhere for someone to live, who can? However with the impending settlement date looming, Walter still has nowhere to go. Unable to find a rental property for Walter before the property’s settlement date, Tracy has been working with My Aged Care as a last resort to find somewhere safe for this Walter to live. Tracy Blosdale told News Of The Area, “Through no fault of his own Walter is now in need of respite within the aged-care system. “For someone who has been living independently this move is crushing,” she said. “Walter has an old car that needs scrapping and a home that needs to be packedTracyup.”fears for Walter’s future. She has been assisting him with Centrelink and in finding respite. “Where will he go? He has no family, friends or support and is on the pension,” she said.

READING by Lynne Miles: Genesis 1: 24 & 25 (Abridged) "And God said, "Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock and creatures that move along the ground and wild animals." And it was so. God made the animals and saw that it was good."

Social Catch q Winner Christine McKenzie.

Walter – a spotlight on one man’s descent into homelessness

Inadvertently Tracy has become his advocate during this difficult situation. “I felt compelled to help him find a safe space to live,” she said. “There are very few rentals that have rent lower than $300 a week in the Bay and it became apparent that Walter needed more care and could not look after himself anymore.“Iwould not allow him to be homeless so I started looking into aged-care services. “He needed an ACAT assessment, but this can take a staggering ten weeks and Walter simply didn’t have that much time. “The unit is settling in mid August and he needs urgent care,” she said. “I spoke to some wonderful community members that could guide me and they spoke to ACAT and an emergency assessment was granted and this expedited the process.”
