The Great Lakes Food Trail, with support from sponsors NSW Local Land Services, MidCoast Council and the Bulahdelah Chamber of Commerce, have organised a long table dinner featuring a range of guest speakers who will discuss life on a farm, and provide tips for setting up farming enterprises in the region.

“It is a great opportunity to hear from experts in the field and get tips for those who wish to venture into agricultural production,” event organiser Dale Bradshaw told News Of The Area.

The speakers on the night will provide practical tips on what to look for, how to get started in agriculture and tell their personal stories.

“If your questions are not answered on the night then you can submit them to the organisers, who will put you in touch with someone who can help,” said Mr Bradshaw. Dinner will be offered by renowned local chefs, Peter and Kerry Hodges from Tillermans Restaurant in Tea Gardens, using produce sourced locally from Great Lakes Food Trail

When Being Misled does Not Lead to a Loss

In the recent case by two homeowners against a construction company (Mills v Walsh) the NSW Court of Appeal found that, based on the evidence provided, no loss was demonstrated as a result of a misrepresentation.

The homeowners contracted with the builder to renovate their house for a sum of $500,000.00. The owner of the company did not say that it did not hold the appropriate building licence.

The project costs went beyond $500,000.00 and when the builder asked for more money a dispute arose.

The Court decided that the construction company had been misleading and deceptive but said no loss flowed from it. The homeowners claimed they would not have entered in to the contract

if they had known about the licence situation. The court found that the value of a renovation to a homeowner is in the work and materials provided; the increase in value of the property is not relevant. The homeowners did not provide evidence about the value of the work done and therefore could not say whether they had received value for the money spent. They lost because no loss was established despite misleading and deceptive conduct.

For further information about misleading and deceptive conduct in the course of business, please contact David Collins or Kristy Nunn from our dispute resolution and litigation team.

q Local musos attended to play together and share their music.

The event was born after organiser Lisa Beatty, who is learning the guitar, took to social media to call for local musicians to gather for a community ‘jam’.

“The evening was filled with cool vibes with tunes by some local musicians featuring Dave, Doug and E,” said Lisa.

“Internationally renowned Ghanaian-Australian singer-songwriter Afro Moses joined in for the evening and had the crowd of approximately 200 locals and area visitors dancing to their own beat,” she said.

Musos on The Beach now has a Facebook group for interested locals to stay up to date on future get togethers.

completed by the MidCoast Council project, funded by the Federal Government grant of $700,000.

These included the installation of a new access ramp, all-access shower and toilet, all-access pathways and minor upgrades to the existing amenities.

The Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association

has welcomed the project’s partial completion and has identified a number of outstanding works that still require mitigation and has offered to assist Council in their completion where appropriate.

These include (in addition to the new rear storage sheds and upgraded gutters):

• Complete the concreting at the entry (now half pavers / half concrete),

seal and paint the incomplete entry façade.

• Replace the inground automatic watering system which was removed during the project. Both the new turf and old grass are dying, and watering is being done by volunteers.

• Additional turf is needed to cover exposed dirt which will dirty the pool and prevent lawn use.

• Replace the bubbler.

• Repaint the safety step stripes around the pool area.

• Replace the shower wall tiles in all bathrooms (both need light and professional painting).

• Replace the old unsafe pool access ladder with a new safe modern one that is easy to remove for carnivals etc.

• Repaint the entry building and pump room

shingle style facia (roof) –they are damaged and very unsightly.

• The two picnic shelters need minor repairs, cleaning and repainting.

The President of the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association, Bruce Murray, told NOTA, “It is great that the public pool is open after some frustrating delays.

“The Progress Association is committed to ensuring the project is fully completed as well as the other repairs and upgrades, most of which are long overdue.

“We are keen to work with Council to assist where possible to ensure we have a great safe facility.

“In the long term we are committed to lobbying for a major upgrade of the whole aquatic and sports precinct in this great Tea Gardens location.

“The $4.3 million Federally funded upgrade of Blayney Centrepoint Sport and Leisure Centre is a great example of what is possible.

“Blayney is a regional town with a similar population profile, taking local growth into account.

“The project was federally funded and used the existing old pool and surrounds. This

is one of many major local improvements we will be pursuing in 2023.”

The Progress Association has to date purchased new plants, lane ropes and reels and plans to assist with other equipment and more volunteer works.

A classical music Encore! in Tea Gardens

HAVING delighted classical music lovers in Tea Gardens last November; Michael Harvey, Gaetano Bonfante and Julie Lea Goodwin will combine again for two exciting concerts in February.

Event organiser Michael Harvey said it is a return of the performers’ “best season ever”.

With outstanding tenor

Bonfante again joined by the exceptional Opera Australia soprano, Goodwin, with Harvey on piano, this is a notto-be-missed event.

“Gaetano and Julie Lea delighted our audience last time with their captivating program - the songs of Andrea Bocelli, selections from La Boheme, La Traviata, West Side Story, The Phantom

of the Opera, the Rodgers and Hammerstein songbook,” said Mr Harvey.

“‘Encore’ will repeat these and more from their amazing repertoire.”

Blown away by the quality of music on offer, local attendees at previous concerts featuring these performers have been generous in their praise.

Have your say on draft Aboriginal Action Plan

MIDCOAST Council is inviting the community to provide feedback on the MidCoast Draft Aboriginal Action Plan.

Council worked with the community to develop the draft plan, which is on public exhibition until 3 March 2023.

“Our Aboriginal Action Plan supports our commitment to strengthening our relationship with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities,” said Council’s Director of Liveable Communities, Paul De Szell.

Supporting Aboriginal people is important to the MidCoast community, with 6.9 per cent of residents identifying as Aboriginal or

Torres Strait Islander, well above the NSW regional average of 4.7 per cent.

“We want to see all people in our region thrive, and to do this we need to understand the gaps and needs in order to better support services already in place,” added Mr De Szell.

Council says the Plan was shaped with input from the community, identifying what’s important to our Aboriginal residents and provides a strategy for improving outcomes across a range of every-day experiences.

The draft Plan identifies key issues across the areas of health and wellbeing,

education training and employment, housing, safe communities and justice, inclusion and participation and outlines goals and initiatives to reduce disadvantage experienced by the MidCoast Aboriginal community.

It also addresses how Council can work with external agencies to better deliver services for our communities.

The community was encouraged to participate in the development of the plan through surveys, by attending one of the pop-ups held across the region, attending a yarn-up, or one of the youth engagement workshops that

“Their talent is breathtakingly next level,” said one, while another commented, “A fantastic performance, how wonderful for our community.”

For the convenience of locals, this time around there will be two concerts –

Saturday February 18 at 5pm and Sunday February 19 at 3pm, at St Stephen’s Parish Centre, Witt St, Tea Gardens.

“As always, please arrive 30 minutes beforehand for your complimentary glass of champagne or juice,” said Mr Harvey.

“This is an event not to be missed!

“Please book early to avoid disappointment.

“Tickets are only $35 at BT’s for Fashion, Shop 11 Myall Quays Shopping Centre, Tea Gardens.”

Koala tops the vote

DURING December, MidCoast Council’s Natural Systems team invited the community to vote on their favourite local animals for a new and exciting project, Wildlife We Love.

Wildlife We Love launched on Council’s Facebook and Instagram pages.

The community was asked to vote for their favourite animals from five different categories: mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and frogs.

Knowing what species are special to the community will assist Council to better support the incredible biodiversity of the region.

Based on current knowledge, the MidCoast region is home to 548 unique animal species.

Our diverse habitats include rainforests, wetlands, heathlands and estuaries.

These environments reach from the hinterland of the Barrington Tops to the coast,

including the Myall Lakes National Park.

With close to 100 votes, the winners of the inaugural Wildlife We Love species are: the Koala, Manning River Turtle, Green Tree Frog, Azure Kingfisher and Yellowfin Bream.

The community votes, together with scientists’ input will help to develop an education campaign on a range of selected

species.

The campaign will include workshops, activities and resources showing how you can help protect the animals of our region.

There will also be opportunities to get involved in citizen science and active conservation projects.

You can keep up-to-date with the project at: https:// haveyoursay.midcoast.nsw. gov.au/wildlife-we-love

Almost directly across from this is the Browns Flat rest stop, operated by the Bulahdelah Lions Club,

Bulahdelah Lions Club President and coordinator of the Browns Flat Driver Reviver site, Judy Dixon, told Myall Coast NOTA that the demand had been “flat out”.

“We can only man this for so many hours and there is a demand outside what we can offer so we are looking for more volunteers to assist them in this worthwhile project,” said Mrs Dixon.

“Our aim is to pull people off the road and give them a bit of a break, and in doing so, save lives.”

NOTA, “Our aim is to ensure that people arrive at their destination alive.

“Recently we had a family that had been driving all night from Brisbane and they were obviously very tired so we said ‘have a rest and we’ll come and wake you in a couple of hours’,” said Ms Dafner.

MidCoast children win their seats at Are We There Yet? stage show

EIGHT lucky MidCoast families have won family passes to the children’s stage show, Are We There Yet?, at the Manning Entertainment Centre after children participated in workshops last November to develop the MidCoast’s first Open Spaces and Recreation Strategy.

“We wanted to hear from children across the MidCoast about which outdoor spaces are important to them, and how they want us to improve and maintain them over the next thirteen years,” said MidCoast Council’s Manager of Strategy and Projects,

Amanda Hatton.

Eight workshops held across the MidCoast region provided consultation opportunities for both adults and children.

“We know young families are busy, so we tried to create events that would fit in with family life and provide them with the opportunity to talk with us.”

The Manning Entertainment Centre donated the family passes on the production, worth $800 in total.

A colour-in competition was one of the activities.

The winners are: Elizabeth, Harry, Samantha, Roy and Hannah (Gloucester), Tobias and Anouk (Smiths Lake), Olivia (Tinonee), Archie (Tea Gardens), Nora (Rainbow Flat) and Teddy (Koorainghat).

Alison Lester’s muchloved picture book Are We There Yet? comes to life on stage at the Manning Entertainment Centre for the first time in 2023.

The show will play for two performances on Wednesday 22 March at 1pm

Time To Check Electoral Roll

NOW is the time to check that you are correctly enrolled to vote in the upcoming State Election.

For those who have just turned eighteen, the 25 March election will be their first opportunity to have their say on who governs our state.

NSW Electoral Commissioner John Schmidt said with polling day fast approaching, now was a great time to get election ready.

It is the second of her classic picture books to be adapted for the stage.

Prioritise wellbeing in 2023

FOR many, the beginning of a new year brings with it resolutions to increase their personal wellbeing.

While embarking on a journey of personal improvement can be a challenge, Positive Psychology and Wellbeing Practitioner, Kerri Rodley, has provided tips for getting started.

“Finding time to work on your wellbeing should be a high priority,” said Kerri.

“If you don't, who will?”

She recommends that you make space in your day to switch off - even for a few minutes - to relax and rejuvenate yourself.

“Do something you enjoy every day,” she said.

“Take time out and do something that makes you happy each and every day.

“It doesn’t matter how small: a cup of coffee in the sun, a read of your favourite book, a bath, walking the dog - whatever!

“Connect with peoplewhether it’s on the phone, online or in person – a quick chat with a friend or family member could make all the difference to both of you.

“It is a scientific fact that

“Get

exercise in nature,” she said. “Take some time out and

the nature around you.

“Exercising outside creates greater feelings of positive thinking and happiness than working out indoors.

“A study found that people who engaged in physical activity outdoors had 1.5 times increased positive mental health and decreased mental health conditions like depression and anxiety.

“Port Stephens is full of nature!”

Trying something new can also make a difference, according to Kerri.

“Try something newwhether it’s taking up a new sport, finding a new walking route or getting artistic with activities like drawing and painting – find an activity you can look forward to and concentrate on.

“Joining a class or group can help you connect with new people too.”

Kerri’s final tip is to practise gratitude through journaling.

“Gratitude forces you to look for the positive, rather than the negative, aspects in your daily life.

“Writing it down invites your brain to relive that situation, which doubles the positive impact it has on your life.”

Fiona Brown of Youtopia Wellbeing recommends setting SMART Goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound).

“Only 20 percent of people set goals, and only a third of those goals are achieved.

“Sadly, that’s so much unused potential, unmet dreams and many people accepting mediocre lives.

“It’s people’s perception of potential challenges that exist between now and their goal and the belief that it takes a lot of effort to overcome them.”

Fiona believes coaching can make a big difference in achieving set targets.

“Most of the obstacles are a matter of mindset and that can be changed easily with the support of coaching.

“As the saying goes - ‘If you think you can or think you can’t, either way you’re right’.

“Simple strategies plus accountability support from a coach can fast-track the achievement of goals and get you living the life you want and deserve much sooner than you realise,” she said.

Police unveil enhanced online Sexual Assault Reporting Option

THE NSW Police Force has unveiled an enhanced online reporting option to allow victims of sexual assault to provide information without having to take part in a formal police interview.

While police always encourage victims of any crime to make a formal report, it is acknowledged that for a number of reasons, victims of sexual assault often do not wish to speak about their experiences nor speak with police and go through the legal process.

The NSW Police Force’s Sexual Assault Reporting Option (SARO) has been in existence since 2012, allowing victims to report a sexual assault without any obligation to participate in further lines of inquiry.

From Friday 13 January 2023, the SARO is accessed through the online Community Portal and is available in twelve languages, making the reporting option more accessible to victims.

This replaces the old process of printing and completing a fourteen-page document and emailing the State Crime Command’s Sex

Crimes Squad.

NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Police Paul Toole said the advancement in the online reporting system puts victims of sexual assault first when reporting and investigating these serious crimes.

“While we want to stop would-be perpetrators before it’s too late, it’s absolutely critical we take a victim-focused approach to supporting those involved through the reporting option,” Mr Toole said.

“Through the hard work of those involved in the Sexual Violence Project, NSW Police have been able to identify ways to better support victims through their journey and to also ensure we take all opportunities to reduce offending.

“While the online portal does not commence a police investigation, it empowers victims of sexual assault to take the first step and record their sexual assault, whether or not they wish at a later date to have the matter investigated.

“The NSW Government is committed to providing the

best services and support for victims of crime, and I am passionate about this project and what it can do to help those in vulnerable positions come forward on their own terms.”

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb said this is an important step forward to help victimsurvivors of sexual violence retain control over their level of contact with police and what happens next.

“For many victimsurvivors, a police investigation and court process are the farthest thing from their mind and often they feel further traumatised through the process,” Commissioner Webb said.

“We understand and recognise that a successful prosecution is not always the desired outcome or the only measure of success.

“Victims can report via SARO anonymously without further contact from police, or they can elect to be identified and request that police follow up in certain circumstances.

“We know that sexual violence continues to be

under-reported, and we hope that by providing victims with alternative reporting options we will be better placed to understand sexual violence in the community, assist victims, and hold offenders accountable.”

State Crime Command’s Sex Crimes Squad Commander, Superintendent Jayne Doherty, said the NSW Police Force is continuing to review and improve its practices and procedures around sexual violence.

“Our ongoing focus is to create a trauma-informed, victim-centric response to sexual violence – the enhanced SARO is another important resource for both survivors and investigators,” Det Supt Doherty said.

“While trauma affects individuals in different ways, reporting can be therapeutic for those victims who wish to share their experience and do so online from their own home or a safe location.

“For some victims, this may be their first disclosure of the sexual assault.

“The number of SARO reports continues to steadily increase each year, with the

monthly average increasing from 64 reports in 2021 to 70 in 2022.

“This allows us to continue to gather information which can be used to develop future strategies that target repeat offenders and can determine modus operandi or links between cases.”

Full Stop Australia’s Director of Clinical and Client Services Tara Hunter said this is a great step forward in addressing the barriers experienced by victimsurvivors when engaging with the justice system.

“The enhanced SARO will provide choice and greater accessibility for victimsurvivors of sexual violence.

“We know sexual violence in our community continues to be under-reported and we see the SARO as a tool for victim-survivors to make initial contact with police following an incident of sexual violence, where they are able record the details and return to making a more formal statement if and when they are ready.

“Full Stop Australia supports these improvements to increase the reporting of sexual violence incidents in our community

and look forward to continue working to better our justice and support systems for survivors of sexual, domestic and family violence.”

The Community Portal sexual assault page will include an online reporting form (SARO) that allows victims to:

• report their sexual assault in English or twelve other languages,

• report their sexual assault anonymously,

• upload images such as screen shots of social media or dating app profiles,

• respond to SARO questions that are tailored to their experience,

• request follow-up contact from a police officer,

• download their SARO report from the site and via email or text,

• receive a SARO reference number on the site and via email or text, and

• access the community portal via desktop and mobile devices.

The SARO questionnaire can be located on the NSW Police Force website: https://portal. police.nsw.gov.au/ adultsexualassault/s/ sexualassault reportingoption

& LETTERS On theCouch

DEAR Jasminda,

TWO months ago, I met a wonderful woman, and everything is going brilliantly except when we watch movies together.

During the movie, she picks at her nails and I can't focus on the movie because all I can hear is this hideous picking noise.

I don't think I can make this a longterm relationship as I'm a movie buff. Roger H.

Oh, Roger,

Bulahdelah

HAWKS Nest Golf Club has been holding The King of the Mountain annual event at Bulahdelah since 1990.

The coveted trophy was hotly contested by 52 players on Monday, January 9, and the winner of the crown was T-L.Smith with 40 points from M.South with 36 pts.

The Mathew father and son team won the 2BBB with a terrific 48 points from J.Hooper and T-L. Smith with 44 on a c/b from M. and S. South.

K.Hill won the time-to-take-upanother-sport encouragement award!

It was a great day that the Bulahdelah Golf Club always enjoys hosting. Thanks to the sponsors, cooks and all the organisers.

The Vets resumed their Thursday comp on Wednesday January 11, and the winner

SPORTS

of the Stableford event was R.Winter with 40pts from C.Nebaur with 38pts and M.Gardiner with 37pts.

NTPs were T.Crowther, H.Pierson and M.W.Coleman.

Saturday January 14 was a stroke event and the A Grade winner was T.Carroll with 69nett from S.Moss with 70nett.

B Grade winner was H.Pierson with 63nett from D.Mathew with 67nett. Great scores gentlemen!

Ladies’ winner was T-L.Smith with 72nett from A.Benson with 76nett.

NTPs were P.Karingas, H.Pierson and B.Newton while the long drivers were C.Wheatley, D.Johnston and B.Newton.

Caravan Dave also won the $32 jackpot.

Next Saturday is a Stableford, and Sunday January 22 is the Bulahdelah Men’s Shed Fundraiser (3 Person Ambrose).

The chook run continues (Sunday –Friday) and the three winners so far are Sam Moss, Alan Crick and Terry Griffis.

WHILE I appreciate that you are a movie buff, I can't quite fathom that you would end a relationship due to what is probably a subconscious, nervous habit.

We all have irritating predispositions and in the scheme of annoying habitsbinge eating, nose picking, smoking, open-mouthed chewing, compulsive swearing - nail picking seems relatively innocuous.

Perhaps she is bored senseless by your movie selections.

Or maybe you select horror movies that scare the living daylights out of her and she's too polite to say anything, so she has to pick her nails as a form of self-soothing.

Instead of thinking of ending the relationship, you could hold one of her hands, a romantic gesture that will kill two birds with one stone.

Or you could give her a relaxing hand massage.

Maybe you just need to turn up the volume so you can't hear nail-picking antics.

Another option could be to treat her to a manicure - some gel nails may prevent the habit.

Frankly, if you would consider leaving someone due to such an innocent vice, I think nail picking is the least of your problems.

Stop being so picky.

Pun intended.

MONDAY GHOSTS

TEN, 8.45pm

FRIDAY

MONTY DON’S ADRIATIC GARDENS

ABC, 7.30pm

British gardener Monty Don’s screen presence is intoxicating – is it the curly hair, the lilting British accent or his smooth voice? – but it’s only fair to concede that it’s no match for the scenery in his travel shows, which is uniformly magnificent. In this new three-part series starting tonight, the plant lover and culture connoisseur invites us on a fascinating journey as he explores the influence that the Venetians have had on horticulture, from centuries past through to the present day.

Young couple Sam (Rose McIver) and Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) are trying to turn the ramshackle country house they inherited into a successful B&B. After a near-death experience, Sam can see and hear the many ghosts who inhabit the house, so the couple always have some spirited helpers to call on. In this episode, feisty jazz singer Alberta’s (Danielle Pinnock, pictured) Prohibitionera expertise comes in handy when Sam and Jay run into complications during a whiskey tasting soiree. Meanwhile, Isaac (Brandon Scott Jones) wants to start his own ghost fraternity, but finds the others joining a group set up by Trevor (Asher Grodman), because of the fun it promises.

MONDAY BODY OF LIES

7MATE, 10.30pm

Based on the novel by David Ignatius, Ridley Scott’s geopolitical

war on terror as waged by Americans on foreign soil, and back home in the US. Leonardo DiCaprio (above) plays a young spy who infiltrates a terrorist cell under the remote instruction of an indifferent CIA veteran (Russell Crowe). Writer William Monahan, who won an Oscar for Martin Scorsese’s The Departed successfully brings the novel’s gritty urgency and combative character dynamics to the big screen as the mismatched pair team up to bring down an emerging terrorist leader.

Bowls Are Back!

THE new bowling calendar opened today with fine summer weather and 55 eager players cramping on to the synthetic green in teams of four and one team of three.

The morning game was decided by the ‘Lowest winning margin’ and with a margin of three, Rick Islaub, John Moore, John Payne and Roman Bondaruk were the winners.

The afternoon game was decided by the ‘Highest winning score’ and Greg Smith, Peter Campbell, Noel Jackson, and Dave Perry won with a score of seventeen.

The Garden Eatery voucher was won by, guess who, Lucky Kev Barbie.

He has started the year off
