THE Big4 River Myall Holiday Resort in Bulahdelah has been named the NSW Holiday Park of the Year in the less than 100 sites category.

Winners were announced recently at the NSW Caravan and Camping Industry Association Awards at Randwick Racecourse, with park owners Gary and Kim Ekert in attendance.

"We knew we had made it through as finalists but were completely shocked by the result," said Mr Ekert.

"There's about 140 (Big4) sites in Australia, most in NSW and

thousands of other sites and other brands.”

The Ekert’s say they almost stumbled into the holiday park business.

"We were in chicken farming for twenty years and the building industry and were looking for something new," said Mr Ekert.

"It was almost by accident that we discovered this business opportunity as we'd never been in the tourist industry at all.”

The park-managing pair say it is all about ensuring the visitor experience.

"It's about visitors (and) what they want and we have tried to accommodate them.

“It was a long learning curve but we built

on things as we went along, on various sites and by being part of the industry group and learning from other business operators,” said Mr Ekert.

Initially, the road to successful park management was a difficult one.

"We went to Council and they told us we'd never get approval, but four years later we got approval," said Mr Ekert.

“It's been quite good for the business since the winding back of COVID restrictions and the downturn due to floods and fires."

Ms Ekert said the park has seen a particular influx of Victorian visitors since restrictions eased.

"They come through and have booked

again for next year.

“And they talk on various sites so the word gets out and repeat business is important to us,” she said.

Mr Ekert said they have guests who have visited the park at Bulahdelah fifteen times.

“We have asked our visitors for what they want and we have tried to accommodate what they want.

“They want easy access and great facilities.”

With approval for expansion, the Ekerts are looking at providing an upgraded service for visitors in the future.

Pelican mural beautifies amenities

AN artwork depicting the much loved local pelicans has been painted at the Lions Park Lookout in Tea Gardens.

The Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association’s Art Walk Group proposed painting a mural of pelicans on the amenities facilities at the lookout.

After consultation with the local Aboriginal Reference Group, it was agreed to include use of the Kattang language by putting the words ‘Dhunggaarr of Worimi Barray’ on the male toilet block and the English translation ‘Pelicans of Worimi Country’ on the female toilet.

Support for the concept came from the Aboriginal Reference Group and the Lions Club of Tea Gardens.

A Facebook survey also demonstrated

broad community support.

The concept was met with a great response from the community, with the Bulahdelah School of Arts

packed with locals eager to improve medical services not only in Bulahdelah, but the wider area it may serve.

Since the closure of the hospital a few years ago and the recent closure of Cedar

Wharf Lodge Nursing home, the community has been left lacking in emergency, respite and palliative care and locals believe a multipurpose medical centre would fill the gaps in medical provision.

Property Tax – First Home Buyer Choice

The new Property Tax (First Home Buyer Choice) Bill 2022 passed on 10 November 2022 whereby eligible first home buyers will have the choice of either paying transfer duty or an annual Property Tax.

It has been put in place to assist first home buyers whose purchase price exceeds $800,000.00 where no exemptions or concessions are available under the First Home Buyers Assistance Scheme (FHBAS).

The Property Tax will come into effect on 16 January 2023 and is accessible by eligible first home buyers entering into Contracts from 12 November 2022. If you exchange Contracts between 12 November 2022 and 15 January 2023, you will need to pay the duty up front, however, eligible first home buyers may apply for a refund of the duty paid if they opt into the annual Property Tax.

The tax is charged at a rate of $400.00 + 0.3% of the land value if the property is owner occupied (you must still occupy the property for a

continuous period of 6 months within the first 12 months after settlement).

If after this period, the property becomes an investment property, the rate will increase to $1,500.00 + 1.1% of the land value.

The property tax will be an annual fee calculated on the unimproved land value, not the purchase price and you can elect to pay a lump sum or by quarterly instalments.

If you sell the property, the property tax can transfer with the land only to another eligible first home buyer who elects to pay the property tax.

Unpaid property tax is a first charge on the land and will be payable by you if you sell the property and the incoming buyer does not elect to opt into the property tax.

We would love to assist you in your first property purchase. Please feel free to phone Michele Rumph on 02 4928 7300.

medical care this means travelling a considerable distance to either Manning Base or John Hunter hospitals for emergency treatment.

With the MidCoast LGA amongst the oldest demographics in NSW, this distance presents a challenge for patients and their families who have to allocate time, energy and expense to attend to health needs.

Ann-Marie Barry, spokesperson for the Bulahdelah Area Health Action Group said, "A multipurpose (centre) is the best fit for our community.

"It's the best way to bring back hospital facilities, after-hours services and aged care.

“We are not asking for any more than we already had," said Ms Barry.

"It has become a real option for us.

“It will not only serve our community but also all the areas around us that currently lack medical and hospital services.

"It will take the pressure off larger hospitals and will provide safe health services to our wider community,” said Ms Barry.

The proposal was overwhelmingly supported

by the crowd present, and a committee was formed at the meeting to drive the process forward.

Eddies Wood from the Manning Great Lakes Area Health Action Group, who chaired the meeting, said, "It is going to take many years to make this happen but we would encourage all of you to support us on this journey.”

A petition is being circulated throughout the area and locals are being encouraged to sign in support of providing a Multipurpose Medical Centre to serve the southern area of the MidCoast LGA.

Building Better Businesses

NOVEMBER was NSW Small Business Month, allowing an opportunity to highlight the contributions of small businesses to the local economy.

About 80 percent of business activity in Australia is small business.

This year’s theme for Small Business Month was ‘Connect for Success’, and many activities were held across the state to assist small business owners.

One such event was held at the Manning Entertainment Centre, and all businesses from the MidCoast Council Local Government Area were invited to attend.

It was a packed house, with the 100 small business owners in attendance eager to learn more.

The theme was 'Leading your team and developing your leadership skills and inspiring your team to achieve your business goals'.

Speaking at the event, Mid Coast Business Chamber President Anna Godfrey said, "Leadership is the core of businesses learning together.”

The event’s keynote speaker was Catriona Noble, who started off at almost fifteen years old flipping hamburgers before rising to become CEO of McDonald's Australia.

She has worked with ANZ Bank as a senior manager and is currently Executive General Manager Retail at Australia Post where she is responsible for 4300 branches.

In her presentation she emphasised the need to adapt to changing business conditions.

"When I was at McDonalds we introduced items such as salads, as at the time fast foods were viewed as contributing to obesity," said Ms Noble.

"We ended up with a tick from the Heart Foundation and this meant much to us.”

Ms Noble's address was followed by a small business panel where local businesses could ask questions that were relevant to them.

A light luncheon followed which allowed for further networking opportunities between small business owners.

This event was a joint effort of Mid Coast Business Chamber and MidCoast Council, supported by a grant from the NSW Government.

Gold for Barrington Coast in NSW Tourism Awards

MIDCOAST Council’s tourism brand Barrington Coast has won two gold awards at the prestigious 2022 NSW Tourism Awards in Sydney, with local tourism businesses also among winners and finalists.

The Awards celebrate outstanding resilience, innovation and creativity in what has been a challenging few years for the industry.

Barrington Coast won gold in the Local Government Award for Tourism category, which recognises excellence in tourism planning, tourism facilities and services, marketing, event development and the overall contribution made both locally and to the NSW tourism industry.

The second gold, awarded to Barrington Coast in the Tourism Marketing and Campaigns category, recognises creativity and innovation in the promotion of tourism products, services

or destinations.

“I’m thrilled we have won these awards for the second year running,” said MidCoast Council Mayor, Claire Pontin.

“I congratulate our destination management team on their persistence, passion and teamwork.”

Council’s Destination Management Coordinator, Sharon Bultitude, praised the contributions of key consultants Destination Marketing Store, Leonards Advertising and Fred and Co.

“We’d like to congratulate all the finalists who were able to navigate lockdowns and restricted travel to continue to attract domestic visitors and build new visitor experiences,” she said.

Destination Barrington Coast was joined by other local tourism businesses as winners and finalists in the 2022 awards.

Sea Horse Diamond Beach won bronze for Excellence in Accessible

Accommodation, and was a finalist in Self-contained Accommodation.

Donna Carrier from Bent on Food, Wingham won the Dean Gorddard Award for Outstanding Contribution to Tourism by an Individual, while Bent On Food won silver for Excellence in Food Tourism.

Aussie Ark in Barrington Tops won bronze in Tourist Attractions.

These successful businesses are already multi-award winners in NSW Tourism Awards plus other national awards including Australian Small Business Awards and Australian Regional Business Awards.

Last week Sea Horse Diamond Beach won Bronze at the international Stevie Awards in Las Vegas for Social Change Maker of the Year in Disability.

The NSW Tourism Awards are presented by Business NSW in partnership

with the NSW Government and Destination NSW.

The awards were held at Sydney’s Luna Park on Thursday 17 November.

This was the first time in two years that a nonvirtual award ceremony was held, showcasing the State's most outstanding tourism operators.

As the NSW winner for the Tourism Marketing and Campaigns Award, MidCoast Council will now go on to the national awards in March next year.

“These fantastic results provide a strong base from which to move forward and support the sustainable growth of the local tourism industry for years to come,” said Mayor Pontin.

“It’s wonderful to see both our Destination brand and local tourism businesses so well represented at this year’s awards. Congratulations to all winners and finalists.”

Stormwater in the sewerage system an ongoing issue as La Nina persists

in from private properties.

“Our staff use a number of methods to identify where stormwater is getting in, including smoke testing, dye testing, visual property inspections and CCTV sewer inspections,” said Ms Coates.

“The amount of illegal connections and other defects we’re finding across the region is quite concerning.

“In some cases these are deliberate and in other cases

the problem is inherited and the homeowner has no idea.

“But they all need to be fixed.”

Homeowners who are found to have an illegal connection or defect on their property will receive a letter instructing them to have the issue rectified within 90 days.

Ms Coates advised homeowners not to ignore these letters and to get in touch with Council on (02)

7955 7777 if they had any questions or concerns.

“There are penalties that can be applied for not fixing these issues, but we prefer to take an educational approach and work with the homeowner.

“Ultimately, we just want to keep stormwater out of the sewerage system.”

predicted to continue into summer, MidCoast Council is calling on homeowners to help reduce the volume of stormwater getting into the sewerage system.

Keeping stormwater out of the sewer has long been a challenge, but persistent rainfall over the past two years has highlighted the extent of the issue across the MidCoast, with Council’s sewerage system struggling to cope with the amount of water getting in from private properties.

Council’s Executive Manager of Water and Systems, Marnie Coates, said the sewerage system wasn’t designed to handle large volumes of stormwater.

is designed to transfer wastewater from people’s toilets, sinks and drains to the nearest sewage treatment plant. If too much stormwater gets in – which is what we’ve been seeing – it can overload the system and cause wastewater to spill out into places it shouldn’t, like waterways, streets and people’s backyards,” said Ms Coates.

“That obviously poses some serious health and environmental risks, and requires expensive and unpleasant clean-ups.”

Ms Coates said it also added to the cost of Council’s services, as more needed to be spent on treating the excess water.

“All water that comes into our sewage treatment plants is treated, whether it’s wastewater or stormwater, and that process is fairly resource-intensive. If we could cut down on the volume of stormwater entering our plants, we could cut down on the costs associated with treating it.”

Stormwater can enter the sewerage system a number of ways, but most commonly gets in through illegal plumbing connections and landscaping that diverts stormwater into manholes or overflow relief gullies in people’s backyards.

Council is currently undertaking a rigorous program to reduce the volume of stormwater getting

Red Zone to expand due to new Varroa mite detection

NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) Varroa mite tracing and surveillance work confirmed a new detection of Varroa mite last week, as field officers continue hive inspections with beekeepers across the state.

The detection at a property near Cessnock on 23 November brings the total number of infested premises to 103 since Varroa mite was first

identified during routine surveillance at the Port of Newcastle on 22 June.

NSW DPI Chief Plant Protection Officer Satendra Kumar said the new infested hives will require an expansion of the current red zone from its borders, and a new biosecurity order has been made.

The current red zone includes Port Stephens LGA and parts of the Myall Coast, including Nerong, Tea Gardens and Hawks

Nest.

“NSW DPI has put significant measures in place to arrest the spread of the threat beyond the perimeters of the eradication zones,” Mr Kumar said.

“This new detection has been directly traced to an existing infested premises within the eradication zone.

“The purple zone was established to enable the response to delimit the spread of the Varroa mite

from the infested sites and our surveillance efforts to date have and continue to provide the response a high level of confidence in containment.”

The response has carried out surveillance on more than 10,000 hives in the purple zone.

Across the state the response staff have surveyed almost 30,000 hives with no Varroa mite detection.

Through the approved hive movement program

in the General Emergency Zone, beekeepers have tested over 85,000 hives.

This program has been extended where beekeepers are now required to carry out mandatory alcohol wash surveillance a minimum of every sixteen weeks.

“The cooperation of industry and the community is vital in helping the response to achieve the goal of eradication.

“DPI can only act on the information provided to us so I strongly encourage beekeepers to ensure they report the results of all mandatory alcohol washes and to notify DPI immediately of any concerns about the suspect presence

Native Stingless Bees at risk from Varroa Mite baiting program

"IF you have a hive of native stingless bees in a Red Zone, you need to take action now."

That is the advice of Dr Anne Dollin, Chair of the Australian Native Bee Association Varroa Response Subcommittee.

"Your bees could soon be exposed to a very toxic pesticide, so you need to consider moving them to a safe location."

The NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) is about to begin using Fipronil, a toxic pesticide, to eradicate Varroa Mites within the Red Zones in the Port Stephens area.

The Australian Native Bee Association (ABNA) fears native stingless bees within these areas will be at risk of poisoning for up to three years.

The DPI program aims to destroy feral nests of European honeybees in the Red Zones, as these nests may harbour Varroa Mites.

Strict protocols are in place to prevent native insects, reptiles, birds and mammals from accessing the Fipronil-laced sugar syrup in the DPI baiting stations.

However, according to the ABNA, the feral European honeybee nests that are killed by the baiting will contain Fipronil-contaminated honey, and this could attract native stingless bees.

The honey in the feral nests may continue to be toxic to native stingless bees for up to three years.

The ANBA provides

detailed information on their website about the Varroa Mite baiting risks, with advice for stingless bee owners.

If possible, owners should consider moving their hives to a safe location outside the Red Zones for up to three years.

The ANBA has also launched a rescue program to help owners who do not have

THE volunteers at the Tea Gardens St Andrews Op-Shop spread plenty of Christmas Cheers every year.

One of the main ways they raise funds is their massive Christmas Shed Sale, which is back on 2-3 December from 8.3012.30pm daily.

The volunteers hold two massive Christmas sale events; their Christmas in July Sale and the Christmas

Gloria Lovell-Simons of the Tea Gardens St Andrews Op-Shop told News Of The Area, “Our Christmas in July Sale enabled us to help the Tea Gardens school purchase a washing machine and dryer, while the proceeds of the Christmas Shed Sale will also go to a good local cause.”

A great selection of jewellery, toys, books and

kitchenware is all up for grabs at great prices.

“On Friday, shop Christmas gifts, decorations, cards and wraps.

a safe place to take their hives, visit https://www.anba.org. au/varroa-response.

The ABNA says natural nests of native stingless bees are at risk of poisoning within the Red Zones too.

Information for people who would like to help those nests is also available on this ANBA webpage.

"The aim of our Australian

Native Bee Association campaign is to help people move their stingless bees out of the Red Zones and keep the bees safe and strong,” Dr Dollin said.

“Afterwards, when the hives are brought back, they will help repopulate the Red Zone areas."

To read the DPI's advice for people who keep

of Varroa mites,” Mr Kumar said.

Australia is the only major honey producing country free from varroa mite, the most serious pest of honeybees worldwide.

Beekeepers work sideby-side with government as part of Australia’s early warning system to detect exotic honeybee pests, the National Bee Pest Surveillance Program, which includes surveillance hives and catch boxes at strategic locations around our ports and airports.

50,000 Acts Of Kindness

THE 850 members of the Port Stephensbased Heart Letter Pen movement have reached a milestone.

The group has delivered 50,000 handmade and handwritten cards to aged care facilities across Australia.

Heart Letter Pen was launched in July 2020 by Corlette local November Sheehan.

“50,000 cards, that’s more than the seating capacity of the Sydney Cricket Ground!” November told News Of The Area.

But how does it work?

Generous souls make beautiful cards which are hand written by others, sending them in bulk packages to November who checks every single card before they are sorted and packed up for distribution to nursing homes.

Some of the nursing homes have hundreds of residents, others as few as twelve, all of whom receive a beautiful

handmade card on occasions like Christmas, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.

This act of kindness was born through the need for the elderly living in nursing homes to feel valued, connected and cared for by the wider community as they endured Covid lockdowns.

The card makers make sure that every card is special and for some, the simple act of making these cards is a form of therapy in itself.

Donations of cards regularly come flooding into the Post Office, with so many coming in this month that November needed two people and a trolley to get the cards back to the car.

The card makers and those who write messages in the cards remain anonymous.

Culturally sensitive cards and cards suitable for those that have not been parents are also selected and included in the care packages.

Not

This group has already been supplied with 1,200 Thinking Of You cards and are set to receive some extra Christmas cheer as well.

November believes that in a world filled with fast communication like messaging and texts we forget how important the written word is.

For the elderly who grew up receiving and sending mail, the cards are something to treasure and share - some even keep them under their pillows.

“I was told by a staff member in a dementia ward at a nursing home that the residents were holding their cards, closing their eyes and feeling the textures and smiling.”

November is grateful for the support of

“What we need most now are prepaid post satchels to get the cards out," November said

“Our belief is that kindness is real and not manufactured.

“Our new goal is to send out as many cards as we can and we hope to surpass the seating of the Sydney Cricket Ground and knock the capacity of the Melbourne Cricket Ground for six!”

The MCG seats 100,024 people.

You can check out some of the beautiful cards on the Heart Letter Pen Facebook page.

The organisation does not accept cash donations, however donations of prepaid post satchels would be gratefully accepted - these can be sent to PO Box 222 Nelson Bay 2315.

2500 boots at Parliament House

A CONTINGENT of men and women from Port Stephens headed south, laden with more than 100 pairs of boots, to go to Parliament House on Monday for the 2500 Boots On The Lawn of Parliament House Awareness Campaign.

According to the Bureau of Statistics, approximately 2500 men take their lives by suicide every year, that’s 49

men a week or seven men every day.

The event was to create awareness of the lack of services for men and to obtain a Minister for Men to address the problems that organisers believe are causing the high number of suicide deaths of men within our nation.

“We have a Minister for Women, a Minister for Indigenous Australians, a LGBTIQ+ Ministerial and Advisory Council and yet no Minister for Men,” Paul

Withall, founder of the Zero Suicide Community Awareness Program told News Of The Area.

Various Senators and Members of Parliament came to lay boots and to give their respect as they listened to stories from parents and loved ones of men who had died by suicide.

Senator Jim Molan took time out from medical leave to attend the event to commemorate the men and boys who take their lives every day.

‘’I contributed my old army boots to commemorate veteran suicides,” Senator Molan told News Of The Area.

“This is an incredibly important cause, and it was my privilege to visit and thank those behind it for their efforts and dedication,” Senator Molan continued.

Also attending was Tony Miller, the founder of Dads in Distress (DIDS), Mark Parton MLA, Senator Malcolm Roberts, Senator Ralph Babet, former Survivor contestant Steve Khouw, Andrew Wilcox MP, Senator Susan McDonald

and Senator Gerard Rennick.

”The three main reasons men and boys contemplate ending their lives is because of relationship or family breakdown, loss of access to children or family court, and financial issues or loss of employment,” Mr Withall said.

“The national suicide rate of men is higher than the national road toll, it is time to provide support and access to gendered services for the men and boys of Australia,” Mr Withall continued.

TAILS

wildlife in need,” said Jo Lyons.

Jo is launching her book this Saturday, 3 December at 3pm at Hardwood Espresso in Wootton.

“Celebrate the stories of dogs of all kinds from all around the Barrington Coast with heartfelt photography and a gorgeous collector's edition coffee table book and custom artwork for your home, all whilst raising much-needed funds and awareness for endangered

Her book launch party is a celebration for the participants and friends of those who participated, and there will be books available to purchase at the launch, which Jo will sign.

The collector's edition coffee table book is Jo's

second self-published book and showcases 55 local dogs from the Barrington Coast enjoying their favourite dog-friendly location or private farm along with their stories.

Jo’s first self-published book in 2019 was titled ‘Teeny Tiny Dogs and Their Stories’ and supported Sydney dog rescue ‘Paws for Thought’.

Jo’s Tails of Barrington Coast project has raised

over $2600 with 50 percent of the participation fee for each dog, and 100 percent of the participation fee for each additional dog in the family, donated to Aussie Ark while raising awareness for endangered

native Australian wildlife, with a specific focus on our apex predators.

Jo recently experienced first-hand the great work of Aussie Ark when she attended a special sponsors day which included a tour

of the facility, an ATV ride through the Barrington Wilderness Sanctuary, a BBQ lunch with the staff and other supporters, and a chance to cuddle baby Tasmanian Devils and a baby Rufous Bettong.

Funds incoming for urgent pothole repair

MIDCOAST Council will soon start receiving funds for urgent pothole repairs, under the NSW Government’s $50 million Fixing Local Roads Pothole Repair Round.

Member for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead said the money was going straight into MidCoast Council’s bank account to help them cover the extra costs and workload pressures following this year’s unprecedented rain and storms.

“These grants will provide a rapid injection of more than

$1.2 million to help MidCoast Council get on with the job of repairing potholes to get us through the wet summer ahead,” Mr Bromhead said.

“This is on top of the ongoing investment in a stronger road network through Fixing Local Roads, Fixing Country Roads and Fixing Country Bridges.”

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Sam Farraway said all 94 regional councils that applied for funding had been approved for grants.

“From December,

Be alert for Japanese Encephalitis

LIVESTOCK owners in the rural parts of the Myall Lakes are urged to watch for signs of Japanese encephalitis in their animals, with routine surveillance indicating the virus remains present in parts of regional NSW.

Minister for Agriculture and Western NSW Dugald Saunders said mosquito numbers are expected to rise in the coming weeks, given the extended periods

of wet weather across the State.

“As we recover from high rainfall and head into warmer temperatures, the conditions are ideal for Japanese encephalitis to spread,” Mr Saunders said.

“While Japanese encephalitis does not present a food safety risk and all Australiangrown pork remains safe to eat, the virus can cause reproductive failures

in pigs, with 50-70 per cent losses reported in previously affected populations.

“We’re encouraging farmers to be on high alert for ill livestock, with clinical signs of infection including a high temperature, jaundice, lethargy, anorexia and neurological signs including incoordination and impaired vision.

“If you suspect Japanese encephalitis in your stock,

you must report it to the 24-hour Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.”

Minister for Health Brad Hazzard said Japanese encephalitis can also impact humans.

“We’re encouraging people who live or work frequently in areas identified as having Japanese encephalitis to protect themselves with the vaccine,” Mr Hazzard said.

“It’s also important to take additional measures and wear light, long-sleeved clothing, apply repellent to exposed skin, improve drainage where possible to minimise stagnant water and cover windows and doors with insect screens.”

The Japanese encephalitis vaccine is recommended for people aged two months or older who live or routinely work in 41 Local Government

councils across regional NSW will receive their share of $50 million to repair pothole-ravaged local and regional roads,” Mr Farraway said.

“This additional support will help councils to repair their most damaged roads, improving safety and reducing wear and tear on vehicles.”

The NSW road network is more than 180,000 kilometres long, with local councils currently responsible for maintaining well in excess 85 percent of it, including regional and local roads.

Areas with identified Japanese encephalitis risk in the south and west of NSW who meet the eligibility criteria.

The MidCoast LGA is not currently listed as an area of high concern.

MONDAY TASKMASTER

SBS VICELAND, 8.30pm

FRIDAY

THE FLATSHARE

TEN, 8.30pm

London writer Beth O’Leary’s bestselling rom-com novel gets a new life as an exciting six-part series. Starring Jessica Brown Findlay and Anthony Welsh (Dirtymoney) in the leads, it’s a quirky, fun and stylish look at two London millennials in an unusual situation. Book editor Tiff and nurse Leon have never met, but they both sign up to share a single-bed flat, with each having alternate hours to use the space. What begins as a means to an end to save money blossoms into an unconventional love story.

FRIDAY, December 2

Before an Aussie version of this competition-based comedy series hits screens next year, with Tom Gleeson as its arbiter of good tasks, it’s advisable to get a handle on the slightly unconventional format – season 11 of the original British version, premiering tonight, should do nicely. With Taskmaster Greg Davies (right) and his assistant Alex Horne in charge, five new celebrity contestants – Aussie Sarah Kendall (Frayed), actress Charlotte Ritchie (Call the Midwife, Ghosts) and comedians Jamali Maddix, Mike Wozniak and Lee Mack – compete in a series of bizarre challenges, including delivering crockery while riding a scooter and catching rats.

TUESDAY STUFF THE BRITISH STOLE

ABC, 8pm

Host Marc Fennell (right) looks closer to home for the final episode of this globe-trotting six-part series that unravels the mysteries behind artefacts plundered by the British Empire. In 1833, Indigenous Noongar warrior Yagan was a resistance fighter who tirelessly fought against British colonisers in Western Australia. The settlers branded him an outlaw and he was brutally killed. A key part of Yagan’s body was sent to be displayed in a Liverpool museum, only to be lost in the UK for decades. But Yagan’s determined mob never gave up in their quest to bring him back to country. Fennell says the “fight to bring him home is one of history’s wildest detective stories”.

Dorin’s Draws

On the Couch

DEAR Jasminda,

I have a magnificent kangaroo paw plant at the front of my property.

Recently, I noticed that someone has been helping themselves.

I'm quite miffed. How do you suggest I deal with this?

Vicki A.

difficulty, but a kangaroo paw would require secateurs at the very least.

It would also be very difficult to discreetly leave the crime scene with a bunch of these highly distinctive plants.

Your thief is brazen (or perhaps working with an accomplice and a getaway vehicle).

So, you have a couple of options.

You could be passive and bask in the glory of knowing that your gardening skills are of such a high standard that people are willing to resort to theft.

You could be aggressive, hiding out behind your shrubbery and then pouncing on the thief, perhaps giving them a good walloping with a clump of the strap-like foliage and yelling, 'Get your dirty picking mitts off my magnificent flowers.'

Dear Vicki,

I'M trying to envisage someone furtively pinching kangaroo paws and I'd imagine that would be quite a difficult thing to pull off.

I'm also of the belief that this is a premeditated crime.

It would be possible to pinch something innocuous, like a daisy, without too much

Progress Association Update

THE countdown is on to the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association (HNTGPA)

AGM on 13 December which is an opportunity for our community to be involved in what we will do in 2023 with a Strategic Plan and the President's, Treasurer’s and Management Committee reports to be tabled.

A quick update on the last few weeks.

On 27 October, the HNTGPA was well represented at the Community Conversations with MidCoast Council, and we raised a number of well documented issues with the Mayor and senior executives.

I have since been advised by the MCC that this approach will, to a degree, replace the old Southern Area Reference Group (SARG).

The SARG has been useful to date for representing issues about our broader area to Council.

This new consultation approach, which also incorporates their interactive portal, enables broader access and input from locals.

Significantly, it improves accountability in terms of getting things done as we can track our submissions to outcomes by dates.

The HNTGPA also attended the Council’s Open Space Workshop on 5 November, providing

input to help inform a new Open Space and Recreation Strategy (note submissions close 30 November and open to all).

We collated and submitted community ideas, including improving the following: Tea Gardens pool, skate park, dog park, footpaths, bike tracks, beach access/car parks, sporting facilities, etc.

The HNTGPA continued to work closely Council to progress long standing infrastructure and maintenance issues including:

The pool’s extended closure has been an ongoing source of considerable community anger.

On 11 November, I inspected the pool with Council executives and expressed our dismay to them about the delays and reduced scope.

There remains outstanding works including concreting, painting, aquatics and cleaning.

We have been advised the opening date is now 12 December, however I have concerns with the viability of this date. The PA will be assisting where possible, including with painting and equipment upgrades.

The replacement of the old library building will commence at the end of summer.

In addition, the PA will be submitting a grant for minor works to the main hall including floor upgrade, stage upgrade (new curtains), new stove, and minor improvements.

The PA continues to

submit and track over 25 local work orders with Council, noting a compelling need for increased general maintenance staff at the MCC Tea Gardens depot.

Of note, our Secretary/ Grants and Public Officer, Sandra Bourke, has been appointed to the MidCoast Council Community Resilience and Disaster Recovery Reference Group.

This Group provides strategic advice and feedback to the MCC to improve community resilience here and across the LGA.

The appointment was on merit application and reflects the HNTGPA commitment to improving representation and engagement across all levels of government.

The Myall River Art Walk Group continues to renew a number of established murals around our area.

The Group completed the Hawks Nest surfers wall last weekend after work was suspended

during COVID and it looks great.

The Group will also renew the Bennetts Beach mural squares next to the surf club.

These murals were painted by local children and seniors back in 2008 and now need rust removal and refreshing. The PA also reinstalled the original iconic ‘Lost Thong Wall’ which almost disappeared when the old facilities were demolished in October.

We will continue to ensure that the landscaping and new external showers are completed ASAP, given community disappointment with the reduced amenity provided by the new block.

The Senior's Festival Sub Committee grant from NSW Seniors is banked and we have commenced detailed planning for the free Hawks Nest ‘Let’s Celebrate’ NSW Seniors Festival with over 25 stallholders already in!

We will also have free lucky door prizes, fun side show alley, live music, Red Cross Cake kitchen and a

Or you could be imaginative and, once again hiding, cry out a furtive 'ouch' each time the pilferer snips off one of the flowering stems.

I'd hesitate to go to your local law enforcement officers over this.

They are probably dealing with equally important issues like cyber crime, human trafficking and drug cartels.

Carpe diem, Jasminda.

OPINION

free Lions BBQ – a family friendly event.

We welcome any stallholders.

The PA has commenced weekly working bees at the Hawks Nest Scout Hall to ensure it is ready for the day, with great support from the nearby Croquet and Tennis Clubs – join us to celebrate a great community space – see you there!

Our volunteers will be very visible on the day with new hi-vis vests and PPE funded by another successful Federal Volunteer Grant supported by Dr David Gillespie MP, Federal Member for Lyne.

We welcome volunteers to assist with the event.

Finally, at our upcoming

AGM the Membership Committee is excited to be acknowledging the long-standing commitment and community service by some of our members by awarding them Life Membership.

Currently we have one Life Member, Kevin Green, with over fifteen years’ service, including over five years on committee.

These criteria, which are reflected in our Constitution, is how we identified new locals whose extended community service will be commemorated at the upcoming AGM on 13 December.

Take care and see you at the AGM.

Expansive Water Options galore in Karuah

40 Riverside Drive, Karuah

3 Beds, 3 Baths – 385sqm

EMILY Abela from R&R Property would like to present to the market this renovated threebedroom, three-bathroom home, situated along the Karuah River.

Whether you're looking to invest in a holiday home or an Airbnb, perhaps take the opportunity to live permanently close to the water, this unique home on 385sqm is not one to look past.

All the hard work has been done for you, with recent renovations, the double-storey home has an open plan kitchen, dining and living area upstairs with floor to ceiling windows looking out to the beautiful Karuah River, new carpet, and hybrid floorboards, with the spacious kitchen having a gas cooktop, oven, and ample cupboard space.

Another super unique feature in this gorgeous home is the corner spa bath within the living area allowing you to relax and still enjoy the river views!

The upper storey of the home features the main bedroom with a lovely floor to ceiling window letting in an abundance of natural light plus those river views, new carpet, reverse-cycle air-conditioning, walk in robe and a fully renovated bathroom with floor to ceiling tiles, shower, vanity, and toilet with Miele fixtures and fittings throughout!

The lower level of the home features a great second living space with new reversecycle air-conditioning unit, fully renovated bathroom with floor to ceiling tiles, shower, claw foot bath, toilet, and vanity again with Miele fixtures and fittings giving it a quality

finish!

The remaining two bedrooms each have built in robes and carpet.

There is an additional powder room/ bathroom with toilet, shower and sink and the laundry has external access to the back area of the home.

Externally, the back area is the perfect spot

to entertain and spend your summer days!

The large pool/entertaining area features a 7ft deep saltwater chlorinated pool area, an undercover area with ceiling fan and a concrete slab to the rear of the property with the option to build a shed or a pool cabana!

The potential is endless!

Plenty of spots along the water's edge to put a kayak or small boat in and is located only a few minutes' drive to the Karuah Boat Ramp for those with bigger boats.

The property is on town services, has solar hot water, and is on bottled gas.

So, what are you waiting for?

Book an inspection or attend the open home on Saturday 3 December at 11:45AM –12:15PM and check out this unique home for yourself!

There really isn't anything like it!
