“The students especially loved being involved in the presentation, where they had a slo-mo football game.
“Our Italian accents greatly improved with the pronunciation of Felice’s name and some joint reading of the book, ‘Pasta’, which made us a bit hungry.”
Tea Gardens Public School student Eamon declared, ““My favourite part was when the teacher called him ‘Felicky’ and my favourite books were Sporty Kids, Little Athletics, and Pasta.”
Younger students even got involved by drawing the cat from the ‘Pasta’ book after his visit, and sharing in their reinvigorated inspiration for creativity.

On Tuesday, the kids were visited by author Jacqueline Harvey, who shared some of her exciting stories, engaging the students with tales from her childhood and her own days as a teacher.
“I have been inundated with requests about her books and they are disappearing rapidly from our library shelves – demand is certainly outstripping supply,” TeacherLibrarian Rachel Cooper noted later, in a clear testament to how engaging Jacqueline’s visit was.
“I think my new favourite author is Jacqueline Harvey,” student Kora C proclaimed.

the Myall River mouth.
In light of a recent series of stories on the Myall River and Jimmys Beach environmental situations, News Of The Area has attempted the mammoth task of unravelling the dense matrix of government bureaucracies involved.
Two local councils, MidCoast and Port Stephens, share a zig-zag border along Jimmys Beach, which actually bisects the contentious eastern Natural Channel of the Myall River mouth, as the Office of Local Government website confirms.
Eight state government offices, as well as two ‘independent’ (but government-funded)
licensing bodies are involved: the Marine Infrastructure Delivery Office (MIDO), Fisheries, Marine Parks, National Parks & Wildlife Service, Crown Lands, Office of Local Government (OLG), Hunter Local Land Services, Public Works, the NSW Environmental Protection Agency, and the Port Authority.
Six pieces of State legislation require licensing or approvals: Marine Safety Act 1998; Marine Estate Management Act 2014; Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997; Protection of the Environment Operations (General) Regulations 2022; Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979; and Offshore Minerals Act
1999.

New Myall Lakes MP Tanya Thompson delivers inaugural speech
By John SAHYOUN
NEWLY elected Member for Myall Lakes Tanya Thompson delivered her inaugural speech last week in the NSW legislative assembly.
Mrs Thompson is the first elected female representative for Myall Lakes and the youngest to represent the electorate.
Mrs Thompson expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to serve and outlined her commitment to working tirelessly for the betterment of the region.
She initially reflected on her early life and how a lifetime of determination had led her to this place in time, thanking both her family and the tireless team who got her across the line and supported her on her political journey.
Mrs Thompson said
she has drawn inspiration from the hard work of her predecessor, the late Stephen Bromhead, and pledged to match his tireless dedication and follow in his footsteps in advocating for the people of Myall Lakes.
In the address Thompson emphasised that she represents the voice of regional and rural NSW and their communities, and hopes to bring this to the forefront of the current government’s thinking.
In Mrs Thompson’s speech, she shed light on a pressing concern affecting the tourism industry in Myall Lakes and will call upon the active government to prioritise dredging on Wallis Lake, emphasising the detrimental impact it has had on local businesses, in particular the long-standing Amaroo Cruises.
Other aspects that Mrs Thompson highlighted for
the Myall Coast electorate include fighting for the permanent opening of the Manning River, the completion of Forster Public Hospital and the development of stages 2 and 3 of Manning Base Hospital as healthcare priorities, the need for a Multi-Purpose facility in Bulahdelah, and ensuring the necessary funding and resources to ensure all these projects come to fruition.
Importantly, she emphasised the pressures on families in the current economic environment and how past and current initiatives can assist those in the most need.
She concluded in her address that the regional areas are the true heartbeat of the state and said she understood what it meant to represent the great people of the Myall Lakes electorate.
those approvals, being offices of the Ministers for: Transport; Roads; Agriculture; Natural Resources; Planning & Public Spaces; Climate Change, Environment (the last two happen to be the same person, at the moment).
Citizens should bear in mind that Ministers can be reshuffled at any time, and
usually change with each State election.
Four State Government Departments, which can also be reassigned, are invariably involved: Transport for NSW; Department of Primary Industries; Department of Planning & Environment, and Department of Regional NSW.

of Environment is watching, too, just in case.
Finally, at least two Local Aboriginal Land Councils are obvious stakeholders, Karuah and Worimi.
Needless to say, this Kafkaesque gauntlet of bureaucratic obstacles makes it a wonder the dredge was ever installed or activated in the first place.
Disputes over Defective Work
by David Collins
Disputes over defective work are common. They can be difficult to resolve and can often lead to litigation.
There are a number of factors that can contribute to disputes over defective work, including:
• Disagreements about the existence of the defect
• Disagreements about the cause of the defect
• Disagreements about the cost of rectification
• Disagreements about the contractor's liability
Disputes over defective work can be complex and timeconsuming to resolve. It is important to seek legal advice from Mullane and Lindsay’s litigation and disputes team if you are involved in a dispute over defective work.
Disputes can arise about the duties and obligations of an agent; for further information please contact David Collins or Kristy Nunn from our dispute resolution and litigation team.

No rest for busy local environmentalist
By Adrienne INGRAM
WELL known Myall Coast environmentalist
Ian Morphett has been invited to sit on a regional advisory body to help save our endangered koalas.
Ian will bring decades of knowledge about koalas, habitat and other wildlife issues to MidCoast Council's Koala Reference Group, which will provide input to the development of a Koala Plan of Management that will highlight key projects in priority koala habitat areas of the MidCoast, under the NSW Koala Strategy.
Comprising Council and state officials, conservation bodies, environment experts and local representatives, the reference group will hold its first meeting in Taree on 5 June.
Ian and his wife Gail have been wellknown for many years as coordinators of the Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens koala surveys and rescues.
Ian has held several official positions in the Myall Koala and Environment Group (MKEG).
He recently stepped down as Secretary but retains an active role in the group as vice-
president.
“Ian has been a role model for us all,” said MKEG’s current president, Richard Streamer.
“He has been a tireless and very effective voice for nature conservation in our area and he will take all this experience to the reference group, so our local interests will also be well represented.”
Ian’s experience and knowledge about
koalas, habitat and other wildlife issues gained over his twenty years with MKEG will be invaluable.
Ian and Gail set up the Koala Hotline and kept records over twenty years of koala sightings on the Myall Coast, which are vital in understanding koala population trends as well as key koala locations and movements.
Ian also wrote many submissions to
MidCoast Council on behalf of the group about environmental and development issues to local, state and federal governments. He also organised the Wildside Festival for MKEG, drove the placement of koala signage around town, the speed signage on the Hawks Nest side of the bridge and the road paintings of koalas.
Stinker’s Fishin’: Action Aplenty
By John ‘Stinker’ CLARKE
RIGHT now the water is boiling with fish.
From Birubi in the south to Broughton up north, the action is fierce.
It’s great to see big schools of surface fish; slimy mackerel, bonito, yellowtail, kingfish, salmon, a few tailor and of course the mullet.
With so much activity it is only natural to be visited by a few sharks.
In the southern corner of Fingal Bay, Grey Nurse sharks have been feasting on lazy mullet.
Mulloway are also showing an interest and I have been receiving reports of thumpers up to 20kg landed along the beaches from Stockton to Fingal and over at Hawks Nest.
Out in front of the Fingal Lighthouse in ‘Stinkpot’ through the week, I used strips of fresh mullet pinned at one end with a 6/0 Octopus style hook. Tossed behind a rich berley trail the unweighted bait slowly sank until whammo!
Half a dozen cracker snapper from 3kg to 5kg came to the party along with kingfish, bonito, silver trevally and a lonely, somersaulting salmon.
The salmon was immediately consigned to the kitchen for a feed of fishcakes.
I am not a salmon fan, however in fishcakes they are hard to beat. Give it a go.

Skate park rejuvenation underway
By Thomas O’KEEFE
REJUVENATION of the Tea Gardens Skate Park has begun, with practical work starting upon the Myall Way blocks on Wednesday, 24 May.
Jeanette Hart, Myall River Art Walk Group leader, assisted by Sandra Bourke from the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association (HNTGPA), began by giving the whole area a once-over, and more than a decent scrub of the adjacent public facilities.
In a purely volunteer affair, ‘grey-washing’ began on the porous blocks of concrete, which just goes to show that even a quick lick of paint can make a difference, rendering the future ‘canvas’ a little easier on the eyes.
There is still a lot of work to be done, with a spotlight now on the state of the rusty metal bars that form the railings of the skate ramp blocks.
“We are setting the scene for the Progress Association’s Kids Redesign Competition, which closes on May 26,” Sandra Bourke, Secretary of the HNTGPA, told News Of The Area.
The winner of the Kids Redesign Competition will
be chosen by the Art Walk Group in June, followed by preparations to transfer the design onto the façade of the blocks and walls of the facilities at the Skate Park.
A few stencilled and painstakingly hand-drawn outlines of skaters and flora and fauna silhouettes were being added on the day by
the volunteers.
Prior to their efforts, a few other practical changes had also been made, with new and safer stall locks put inside the doors of the public toilets.
“We’ve also been informed that the rotted benches will be getting replaced next month,” Ms
KARUAH PIZZERIA KARUAH PIZZERIA
Bourke added. For too-long a visible blight on the side of the gateway to town, the volunteers’ efforts, augmented by local kids’ artistic endeavours, will bring the Skate Park into the fold as part of the Myall River Art Walk, which begins up the hill at the Lions Lookout, and ends at Bennetts Beach, everevolving along the way.
Tech training at Myall Coast Radio
By Thomas O’KEEFE TECHNOLOGY
outpaces even the most well-equipped media setups, and there is always more to learn and do, as the volunteers at Myall Coast Radio discovered in Tea Gardens on Wednesday, 24 May.
The training came as part of a government grant, through the Community Media Training Organisation, and was delivered primarily to ensure that communityminded radio stations can stay up to speed on the rapidly changing technological situation.
“The technology in broadcasting has transformed entirely, and we need to be kept abreast of the
software and hardware in use at the radio these days,” Chris Lock, MC Radio Committee member, and past President, told NOTA.
Chris would know, having worked as a broadcast engineer himself, back in the days when it was all run by the Postmaster General’s office.
Training facilitator Brock Martens of Brave Tech, on the Central Coast, brought his wealth of knowledge and experience as a broadcast engineer and IT specialist, who develops and upgrades commercial and community stations and transmitters.
“Brock is a good teacher, and we are learning a lot, always more to pick up,” said Ian Nylander, one of the
volunteer presenters, and woodworking hobbyist.
“The biggest problem faced these days is cyber-security concerns, especially since everything is computerised now,” Mr Martens told the volunteers.
“Ransomware, spyware, malware – they can all get it through the wrong click of an unsolicited email, and scammers are very good at disguising their work as legitimate-looking.”
With a view to making Myall Coast Radio into more of a staple for the community, the Committee will continue to look into the best ways to develop the platform and its delivery to people on and around the Myall Coast.

Hawks Nest hosts truly Biggest Morning Tea for Cancer Council
By Thomas O’KEEFE
GREAT Aussie traditions don’t come bigger than the Biggest Morning Tea, hosted by the Wednesday Morning Craft Group at Hawks Nest Community Hall on Wednesday, 24 May.
Over 60 people joined, raising funds for the Cancer Council, including the RFS, SES, Tea Gardens Country Club, Progress Association, Lions Club, Clinic Bus, VIEW Club, Family Research Group, Red Cross, Meals On Wheels, and ‘Teabags’ 7am Swimmers.
The ladies of the Craft Group laid out a colossal, mouth-watering spread of sandwiches, pies, pastries, cakes and desserts – most lovingly home-made –along with tea and coffee.
“Everybody from the Craft Group pitched in, and we are very proud of the community donations we can present to our recipients today,” Kris Wheatley announced.
“We are sometimes astonished at this community’s generosity, and feel lucky to live where we do.”
In all, $1145.25 was raised for the Cancer Council on the day.
The Morning Tea also saw the presentation of $750 donations to the RFS, SES, Clinic Bus, and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, raised via the big Red Cross and Craft Group raffles last Mother’s Day and Christmas.
David Bright accepted for the Pindimar/ Tea Gardens RFS, thanking the ladies for their ‘fantastic efforts’, reiterating the basic needs of the volunteer firies that the funds would go towards.
Greg Snape, of Stroud SES, reminded us of the drama and tragedies of floods, declaring the funds have assisted with making rescue operations that much more bearable in atrocious weather conditions.
Jan Peeters, of the Clinic Bus, announced the funds’ role in bringing a new, customordered vehicle to their small fleet.
Rusty Sargeant and Graeme Rowe from the Westpac Helicopter, a first-time beneficiary, said the funds go towards keeping the choppers in the air, adding, “We hope you never need to use it, but it is free for those who do.”
Although dwindling to around a dozen members eight years ago, today’s 40-plus Wednesday Morning ladies were keeping things lively with raffles and competitions, producing a truly pleasant morning.

Have a coffee on MidCoast Assist
WHAT’S better than the feeling you get from helping your community by volunteering?
Having a coffee thrown in of course.
MidCoast Assist is hosting several ‘Coffee On Us’ sessions at different cafes in the area for those thinking about becoming a volunteer with their ageing services team.
The sessions give residents the opportunity to chat with other like-minded
people and current volunteers to give them valuable insight into the world of volunteering.
“We want to provide a friendly, relaxed atmosphere where people who want to make a difference by assisting older residents in their town can come along, chat with us and learn more about volunteering with us,” said MidCoast Assist’s Team Leader – Active and Older Program, Christine Ellis.
“We decided that meeting
in a local coffee shop is a great way to get together for an informal, no-obligation chat about what we do and how our volunteers assist us.
“And the real experts are our current fabulous team of volunteers – they’re the ones who can tell you exactly what to expect.”
The MidCoast region attracts new retirees each year, and they’re responsible for the region boasting one of the highest volunteering rates
in NSW.
There’s many different volunteering opportunities and cutting through the swathe to find one that’s right for you can be a big task.
One of the best ways to find out if a volunteering opportunity is right for you is to talk to the people who already volunteer there.
Volunteers at MidCoast Assist provide practical assistance to people over 65 with things like outings
and social events, transport, shopping, technology, sharing hobbies and companionship.
Whether it’s one day a week, one day a month, or a couple of hours a fortnight, your valuable time and friendly face will be very welcome.
“We are committed to providing quality services and provide all our volunteers with training and regular support,” Christine said.

Rediscover the Myall River Art Walk
By Thomas O’KEEFE
ART is best when heralding humans’ love of nature, as it does along the Myall River Art Walk through Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest.
Over 40 sculptures, mosaics, murals, paintings, and poetry have coalesced into the Art Walk over the last 20 years, first established in 2003 by locals including Lee Anderson and Shona Howarth.
The idea was to create, with Council permission, a journey of artworks along the Myall River, giving people some insight and appreciation of the culture, history, heritage, community, and the obvious natural beauty of the area
“We encourage and showcase local artists’ works,” Jeanette Hart, current leader of the Art Walk Group, told NOTA.
“The Group continues the legacy with an energetic and enthusiastic ‘hands-on’ approach to preservation and restoration of existing artworks, along with encouraging and adding new and diverse works to the Walk.”
As it exists today, the Myall River Art Walk runs the length of Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest, forming an interpretive trail that starts atop the hill at the Lions Park Lookout, meanders down to the Skate Park (soon to be revamped in the kids’ competition) to the riverfront itself.
It then crosses the iconic Singing Bridge, pauses at the Hawks Nest Community Hall park, and flows on to the stunning Bennetts Beach, with the new Black Dolphin ‘Wubaray’ sculpture, unveiled last week.
“The evolution of the Art Walk endures, thanks to the support of the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association, MidCoast Council, Men’s Shed, local Historical Society, Lions Club, Myall Art and Craft Centre, and more recently the local Worimi Reference Group, with new works added and others fading away,” Ms Hart said.
The Myall River Art Walk Group has updated the
map and brochure, adding an online version, so that locals and visitors can rediscover and enjoy both the new and older artworks.
The new Art Walk map and brochure is available from the Tea Gardens Art and Craft Centre and from many local businesses.

Jalopies rally for Cancer Council
By Thomas O’KEEFE
OLD bombs and jalopies dragged along the most circuitous route possible between Newcastle and Townsville as the ‘Shitbox Rally’ for Cancer Council funds ran between 12-20 May.
Local volunteer RFS fireman Patrick Hurkett joined old friend and cancer survivor Paul ‘Dutchy’ Kuster in ‘Dutchy’s Mob’, one of several local teams in this year’s Autumn Rally.
Their steed upon this quest was a stereotypical white Holden Commodore station-wagon with a ‘dingo fence’ decal, adhering to the Rally’s primary rule of “a shitbox worth <$1500”.
Their route covered over 3500km, 1500km of which was outback dirt roads, cross-country to Townsville, via Betoota and several other locales.
“It was a great adventure,”
Patrick told NOTA, “camping in showgrounds and building a close-quarters team dynamic.”
“Support vehicles had trailers, although of the 230 vehicles that started, only
two didn’t make it,” Patrick explained.
“A lot of bush-mechanic action went on – one Commodore lost its sump, but, miraculously, they salvaged the same part off a nearby abandoned heap.
“One tiny Suzuki Swift, with barely inches of clearance underneath, suffered oil leaks and suspension blowouts as it literally dragged its belly across hundreds of kilometres of rough terrain, and was trailered off three times.”
The Rotary Club of Goulburn sponsored ‘Dutchy’s Mob’, with several individual and organisational donors from Tea Gardens pitching inLions Club, Ray White Tea Gardens, Woody’s Nursery, PC Brunton Electrical, and RN Baker switchboardsraising an impressive total of $6,195.
The ‘Shitbox Rally’ (real name, so no complaints, please), is a massive fundraiser for the Cancer Council, started thirteen years ago, by James Freeman, after he lost both his parents to cancer twelve months apart.
To date, the Rally has raised an ongoing total of over $38million, with the Autumn 2023 Rally alone amassing more than $2 million so far.
Several recent local fundraisers for the Cancer Council and related charities remind us that everyone has been affected in some way by cancer, and events like Shitbox Rally help people to talk about it.

Simultaneous Storytime at Tea Gardens School
By Thomas O’KEEFE
READING became a national event on Wednesday, 24 May, as the students of Tea Gardens Public School (TGPS) engaged with the National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS).
Each year, since 2000, the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) chooses a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, which is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops, and many
other places around the country.
This year’s book, The Speedy Sloth by Rebecca Young and Heath McKenzie, was enjoyed by students from kindergarten to Year 6 at TGPS, alongside over two million participants at 59,000 locations country-wide.
The aim, according to ALIA, is to “promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6”.
TGPS student James said,
“I liked both the exaggeration in the story, and the way Spike tried to do what all the other sloths believed couldn’t be done.”
“I loved the way Spike the sloth was cheered on at the finish line by her sloth friends, even though she came last,” said Sarah.
“It was lovely the way Spike the sloth's inspiring journey resonated with the students, teaching them a valuable lesson of perseverance and friendship,” noted one TGPS teacher.
'The Speedy Sloth' was a hit among TGPS students, with many eager to borrow

it from the library for future readings.
Writing, and thoughtful reading, are quickly dying artforms, especially in the face of the instancy of social media, which lacks any clear articulation or purpose, so this glimmer of focus on literature should come to parents as a refreshing change.
This all comes amid official promises to reform the curriculum, and widespread reports that NSW kids are falling behind on literacy, fundamental for being a productive member of society.
The students at TGPS cannot wait to find out which book is selected for next year’s National Simultaneous Storytime.

Golden Times
IT was interesting to read earlier this month that Australia’s largest gold miner, Newcrest, has received a takeover offer from the USA’s largest gold miner, Newmont.
If the offer is accepted by shareholders and government approval follows, the joint company will be the world’s largest gold miner.
This is all happening at a time when the price of the precious metal has reached its all-time high of over US$2000 per ounce.
This immediately raises the question of why you would buy anything at the top of the market.
Gold is not in the same position as Sydney waterfront real estate, where that seems to be happening on a regular basis, but on the premise of large demand for small supply.
We are all aware of one family buying
two eastern suburbs houses for over A$100 million each.
However, gold is mined in many locations and often as a free result when mining for copper as the minerals are frequently found together.
The USA miner Newmont is headquartered in Denver, Colorado; not far from where I go fishing on the Colorado River, but on the Utah side of the border.
The President of the American company Newmont is Australian born, which I’m sure will make the employees of Newcrest feel a lot more comfortable about their future.
Newmont has an existing mine in Western Australia at Boddington and the Tanami mine in Northern Territory.
So, on the face of it, consolidation of the two big miners could prove to be a neat fit.
Together the enlarged company is expected to produce some eight million ounces of gold each year and is also looking to increase its production of copper, silver, zinc and lead.
As we know copper will be needed in vastly greater quantities in order to build renewable energy infrastructure and for electric vehicles.
They are talking about producing 350 million pounds of copper each year too, all of which values the Aussie company at $26 billion.
Dear Jasminda,
I'M feeling quite unnerved about turning 50 when I don't feel anywhere near that age.
It just sounds so old. How should I approach this?
Mrs YL.
Dear Mrs YL,
YOU know this problem isn't really a problem when you think about all the people in this world who will never make it to 50.
That you are reaching this amazing milestone is actually fantastic. It's evidence that you haven't succumbed to a life-threatening illness.
You haven't suffered an accidental
If you include the dividend Newcrest wants to pay its shareholders before the takeover goes through, that value increases to nearly A$29 billion.
An eye watering sum no matter how you look at it.
It will be interesting to see how elements of the Australian Government will approach the sale of our biggest gold miner.
We all remember the community resistance to the sale of Australia’s largest dairy farm in Tasmania to a company associated with the Chinese Communist government and how that played out.
The present price of gold still amazes me as I can clearly remember when the value of gold had its price fixed at US$40 an ounce.
This base rate was used to value other countries’ currencies when we all operated on the gold standard.
Because gold doesn’t produce any income a number of nations decided to liquidate their gold reserves and use the cash to bolster their economies. Eventually we had just the Swiss currency as the only one fully backed by gold and even now they have moved to the Euro.
Switzerland is held in the highest esteem as having the best money managers in the world.
death due to circumstances beyond your control. You haven't been swept into the ocean while trying to get a selfie in front of the pounding swell, because you are too mature for that nonsense. You are winning the game of life, Mrs YL.
You are a winner. I know it is a cliche, but it really is just a number. I mean Iggy Pop is still swivelling around on the stage in his 70s, Grace Jones is still cavorting down the catwalk in a skimpy bodysuit. The whole notion of what you can and can't do at certain ages has passed. We do, of course, live in a youth-obsessed society, and that doesn't help. People are told by marketers that they need to look younger with smoother skin, fatter lips, firmer thighs, flatter tummies, and on it goes. You can either succumb to this or you can embrace your age and just be the best you can be. Fifty is fantastic when you think about the alternative, Mrs YL. PS: You can always lie about your age.
Its neutral status also helps.
I am sure that a number of people will be thinking about the question I put earlier, that of why would you buy at the top of the market.
Maybe it will go higher, they say.
Others might suggest that because gold is seen everywhere as a repository of wealth when people get nervous of economies being overvalued and may well adjust downwards in hard times, as gold holds its value it can be readily converted into any other currency.
The safest way that you can protect your assets is by converting them to gold, but in the knowledge that it doesn’t pay any income unless you sell it at a higher price than you paid for it.
It is likely that the present outlook for many world economies is that they may well fall into recession.
If that happens then the gold buffs will have made the right decision, be able to ride out the downturn safely and come out looking like geniuses when things settle and they reconvert their gold into currency.
With gold at the present high price, it’s a big guys game to be involved with.
Lady Hawks v Shortland Devils Touch Tag
By Thomas O’KEEFE
HOME ground advantage proved insufficient, as the Lady Hawks succumbed to the Shortland Devils at Myall Park on Saturday, 28 May.
Shortland came out of the gate with a bang, as their #1 jersey scooped the kickoff, sprinted down the right wing and scored before anyone else knew what was happening.
The scene set, the Lady Hawks quickly rallied, putting up a strong defence, spectators commenting on their need and execution of “very quick” footwork, mainly due to the unique realities of the tags streaming from both hips.
Shortland strafed back and forth along the Hawks’ backline, looking for an opening, all the while battling with the fact that a mere flick of the wrist is enough to yank the tag and halt a run.
A strong frontal push from the Devils kept the Hawks’ territorial gains to a minimum, until Shortland found the far right corner for a few tries, making none of the conversions
easy.
An awkward play stoppage was befuddling but necessary, and once the papers were all in order, play resumed with Shortland’s dependence upon one player in particular becoming evident.
Several excellent displays of footwork by Lady Hawks’ Chloe Tito and Shian Perry would have gotten them to the line, if not for the billowing tags requiring at least a metre on either side of a runner, a nigh-impossibility within the confines of the field.
Despite strong attacks, the Lady Hawks were unable to score in the second half, and the heartbreak was palpable as spectators witnessed several Hawks make clear linebreaks, only to hear that their tags had been swiped at the last split-second.
Several ref’s imperatives of “Play Tag!” also led to multiple restarts, as the latter stages of the game saw some ladies getting a little too ‘contact’ for a touch-tag match.
The full-time scoreline of 0-20 was full of learning opportunities, a situation that should not be lost on the first-timers and veterans alike among the Lady Hawks’ this season.
q Space is at a premium, as the tags add to runner’s burdens.

Progress Association Update for May
MAY is almost over and lots to report so please come along to the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association’s next General Meeting on Monday 19 June 2023 starting 6.30pm at the Tea Gardens Hotel in the Dolphin Room.
High on the agenda will be developing the Progress Association’s response to the MidCoast Council (MCC) draft Open Spaces & Recreation Strategy 2023-2035.
It will shape how our parks, gardens, recreational foot and bike paths, sports fields, boat ramps, playgrounds, dog parks, foreshore areas, and other public places will be prioritised over the next fifteen years.
It will also inform the expenditure of our area’s Developer Contributions as collected by the MCC in accordance with the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979.
It appears that some of the actions for our area have not been updated since 2014 and we are keen to ensure they reflect current community needs and priorities and that the funds are spent accordingly.
I am pleased to report that the $117k Regional NSW grant for our new three outdoor gym stations in Providence Bay Park has finally been received.
Updates about this great local
project and its positive impact on the park will be shared in NOTA, on the Myall Coast Radio, and via local internet and social media sites.
It is anticipated it will be completed by summer and we will continue to apply for other grants to improve our area.
The Tea Gardens skate park has seen a flurry of activity these last few weeks including:
· The new Tea Gardens Welcome is up with a huge thanks to Glen Henry, plus all the nine community groups who contributed.
There is also a new solid surrounding native garden built by the Men’s Shed – thank you.
· Local young people have submitted over 30 entries into our ‘Redesign the Skate Park’ competition which will be judged by the Myall River Art Walk Group and the Worimi Aboriginal Reference Group this week.
The winners will be announced on 5 June, however, all the entries will be submitted to the MCC to inform their Open Spaces and Skate Park strategies, plus used in an updated grant application to act on their ideas.
Thank you to Principal Mark Clemson and the P&C for the Tea Gardens Public School support.
· The Myall River Art Walk Group (led by Jeanette Hart) with HNTGPA volunteers are repainting
the outdoor skatepark walls in readiness for mural designs (based on the competition).
They have also painted murals (reflecting young people’s input) inside the toilet amenities to help prevent vandalism and encourage safe use.
· MCC have repaired the damaged skatepark seats with replacements scheduled for installation next month.
Other highlights include:
· HNTGPA volunteers, with support from IGA Hawks Nest, installed a bike rack following public requests.
We remain committed to supporting improvements to the Hawks Nest Plaza area.
· The long-awaited footpath from Peter Sinclair Gardens to Hawks Nest Plaza was commenced. Sincere thanks to all who lobbied over many years.
It has been frustrating however the path is now almost complete with a native tree grove to be planted by HNTGPA volunteers.
· Winter Working Bees at the Tea Garden’s pool to hose away recurrent duck poo, conduct minor maintenance, and gardening, remain ongoing every second Thursday 10am with the next one scheduled 1 June 2023.
· We have completed and submitted the Community Defibrillator Project Plan and participated in two local Disaster
Recovery and Resilience workshops with an updated Local Disaster & Recovery Plan in progress.
· We continue to monitor all MCC meetings and draft policies and note a number of issues of concern including the future provision of Visitor Information Services, the LGA’s Roads Strategy, rate increases, and the loss of MCC provided christmas lights (perhaps an opportunity).
Our first Bunnings BBQ fundraiser is on Saturday 10 June from 7.30am at Heatherbrae.
Please support us as the funds raised directly support volunteer works and materials, including joint projects with other community groups.
Finally, we have commenced early planning for several exciting events over 2023-24, notably the Singing Bridge Golden Jubilee Commemorations on Saturday 6 April 2024 - bridge party time! Ideas, photos and stories are all welcome and check out and share on the new community Facebook page by the Singing Bridge.
Thank you, Bruce MURRAY, President, Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association Incorporated.
Rookie fullback Lily-Ann named Knights’ Under 18 Player of Year
By Chris KARAS
EMERGING schoolgirl rugby league ace Lily-Ann White has capped a memorable representative season by reaching two major milestones.
The versatile seventeen-yearold from Tea Gardens was recently named the Newcastle Knights’ Tarsha Gale Cup Under 18s Player of the Year and last week earned another State jumper when selected in the women's NSW Combined High Schools team.
It has been a season to savour for the talented rookie who has shone at half back, fullback and five eighth across different competition formats.
A modest Lily-Ann told News Of The Area, “Taking out the Tarsha Gale Cup Player of the Year award for the Knights was a huge thrill.
“It was a pleasant surprise after reaching the finals and then to gain selection in the NSW Schoolgirls side was a real bonus,” Lily-Ann revealed.
The boom teenager received her prestigious trophy during the Knights’ Junior Representative Awards Night at the M.ex Club in Mayfield.
After joining the Knights system as a development player last season in the Tarsha Gale Cup, the promising White proved a sensation at fullback – helping Newcastle reach the 2023 semi finals where they were eliminated by eventual premiers the Indigenous Academy Roosters at Leichhardt Oval.
She was a stand out for the Northern schoolgirls representative team at the State Championships in Wollongong – guiding her side to two victories from four matches with skilful performances at five eighth and fullback.
Lily-Ann, a student at Hunter River High School, will line up in the number six jumper for NSW CHS at the National Schoolgirls Championships to be staged from June 27 to July 7 at Redcliffe.
The outstanding utility is sure to be in the mix when selectors name an Australian Schoolgirls team after the Carnival for a tour of Papua New Guinea.
She will be joined in the NSW squad by Hunter Sports High School lock Ryver Lee Arlo and forward Sophie Smith.
Lily-Ann started her rugby league career as a ten-year-old winger and hooker with the Myall River Hawks mixed Under 11s side in the Newcastle-Hunter Junior competition.
At the age of twelve she spent a season with the Thornton-Beresfield Bears as a halfback before linking with the Raymond Terrace Roosters.
Wearing the number seven, Lily-Ann figured in four successive Grand Final defeats from Under 14s before joining the Raymond Terrace Magpies this season.
The classy White is gaining invaluable experience as a half back in the Magpies A Grade women's team where she can mix it with former Jillaroos and more seasoned
opponents.
It won’t be the first time LilyAnn pulls on a NSW jumper.
Last year she represented the NSW Maoris as a fullback in the Harmony Cup and helped the Under 18 Blues clinch the tournament with victories over the Cook Islands, Tonga and Indigenous at Wollongong.
She was also blooded on the wing for the NSW Maori Open women's team that defeated Fiji in Sydney.
A sharp running back with
natural ball skills, Lily-Ann was also selected in the NSW All Schools Rugby Sevens team last season but withdrew due to her commitments with the Newcastle-Maitland Under 17s side at the Country Rugby League championships.
The gifted schoolgirl dreams of one day running out for the Knights in the NRLW competition and hopefully for NSW and the world champion Jillaroos.
“That would give me a huge buzz,” said the Newcastle sensation with the world at her feet.

Record breaking feats for junior golf champ Harry
By Chris KARAS
SINKING birdies on a golf course, stopping a goal in an elite football fixture or serving an ace on the tennis court is a way of life for Tea Gardens sporting whiz Harry Leggatt.
Fourteen-year-old Harry has a passion for sport and already can boast an impressive list of achievements that would make any seasoned athlete proud.
He had a tennis racquet and golf club in his hand as soon as he could walk and was always kicking a ball around.
Most weekends you’ll find the promising golfer competing in local competitions or in the Jack Newton Junior Foundation events throughout NSW.
The gifted Medowie Christian School student is a two time Junior Club
Champion at Hawks Nest Golf Club and the current A Grade Nett champion.
Versatile Harry told News Of The Area, “Golf is my favourite sport that gives me plenty of enjoyment.
“I like to be active on the football field but the strategy and shot selections around a golf course get my adrenaline and competitive spirit going,” he said.
A six marker, Harry will be chasing a third consecutive Junior Club Championship title in October after reaching an historic personal milestone earlier this year.
The talented teenager etched his name in the record books when chosen to represent Hawks Nest Golf Club in the 2023 A Grade Pennants team.
Harry and his father Ian Leggatt created history as the first son and father to represent Hawks Nest Golf
Club in the same A Grade side since the club was formed back in 1963.
Back in 2019, Harry played his first Pennants game for Hawks Nest at the age of eleven in C Grade and finished first in C Grade Nett and second overall in Nett at the Hawks Nest Beachside Pro Am tournament.
Harry is also a member of Newcastle District Golf Club and last year represented Newcastle District Golf Association in the PR West Shield and Lower North Coast District.
When he is not teeing off on the golf course, you’ll find the young gun shining as a centre back or defender with the Newcastle Olympic Under 15s in the Northern NSW Football Youth League competition.

Mixed results for Myall River
Playing at home on Myall Park, the Under-10s had a similarly energetic experience, with a score so close to victory that another few minutes on the clock may have made the difference.
The massive scoreboard difference was made possible with the equally amazing efforts of Kysaiah Sims’ try, as well as two important assists on other scoring opportunities.
Noah Fidden scored two tries, and Kieran Nean scored one try, with another (eighth) try pumping up the team’s score.
The boys and girls got a late start, but the tries came thick and fast on both sides, as they played their hearts out against Wallsend-Maryland Tigers.
Almost every play following one team’s try resulted in a try for the other, with the Hawks leading at half-time 18-14.
After 40 minutes of youthful fun and fury, it was a good clean game, marred only by one errant fist in the last few minutes.
Tries were awarded to the groundings by #11, #4
Mark and Lyn Nightingale required an extra end to defeat Jean Glover and Rob Young 16-15.

SUNDAY DESIGNING A LEGACY
ABC, 7.30pm
As the saying goes, “home is where the heart is”, and in this inspiring, contemplative billet-doux to design, there’s a whole lot to love. Architecture aficionado Tim Ross returns with a lively second season to explore innovative, beautiful and refreshing abodes around Australia. The playful host travels our diverse landscape to unpack our homes’ innate influence on our lives, analysing how great design connects us to a place and to each other. In tonight’s premiere, Tim explores the influence of European heritage and our understanding of place.

After almost five years, this much-loved political satire returns with fresh shenanigans at the Nation Building Authority, a government organisation run by a comical band of diligent pen-pushers. Season five delivers eight exciting new episodes about the minutiae and relationships of federal bureaucracy and office life, with the all the crew, including star and director Rob Sitch (right), Celia Pacquola, Dave Lawson, Dilruk Jayasinha, Kitty Flanagan and Anthony Lehmann returning for the hijinks. With its trademark hilarious characters and dry one-liners, this season features an embarrassing UNESCO report and a road project held up by an errant stature.
THURSDAY RICK STEIN’S CORNWALL
SBS FOOD, 8.30pm
Chef Rick Stein is a foodie, but old-fashioned gentleman who loves striking up a conversation with fellow gourmands.
Known to quote works of literature and freely wax lyrical, Stein’s series are intimate and educational delights. In this third season of exploring his beloved Cornwall, the slow pace and attention to detail is tantalising and, of course, the food is a wholesome treat. Tonight, the self-effacing Brit visits the fishing port of Boscastle, where an unusual seafood restaurant is calling. After a jaunt to Cornwall’s only organic mushroom farm, he whips up a stir fry with lion’s mane mushrooms and broccoli. It’s brain food at its best.

Hawks bitten by Cobras
By Thomas O'KEEFE
SCORELINES can belie a match, as happened during the Hawks’ home game at Myall Park on Saturday, 27 May.
The Hawks’ aggressive offence came from the start, bouncing off last week’s victory, but Clarencetown came back equally uncompromising.
Clarencetown’s first try came after some evasive sidewinding, but the Hawks’ response was foiled by a knock-on losing possession.
Clarencetown dominated possession in the first half, the Hawks’ defensive line holding a 30-minute state of attrition, but no scores registered until after a prolonged back-and-forth delivered Clarencetown’s second try.
A highly unfortunate interaction caused both Hawks’ Captain-Coach and Half-Back playmaker to retire from the field, leaving the Hawks in sore need of leadership.
The Hawks’ valiant efforts went unrequited, including a three-man push-back on Aiden Bills’ run for the line, to no avail.
Serious and intense halftime huddles ensued for both teams, clearly sober to the fact that their opponents were giving everything they had.
Clarencetown’s next two tries came through exploitation of that pesky farright corner.
The Hawks finally found their try-line with a team effort, ignited by Benny’s spirited run from the back all the way up on the left wing, and a pass-off that led to James Sinclair’s try.
The second Hawks’ try
followed minutes later, with Ethan Tito putting it between the posts for Aiden Bills’ second successful conversion.
Hawks’ defence held up, but Clarencetown showed that persistence pays,
cutting through a fifth try in the same corner, answered immediately by Carl Williams’ third try for the Hawks, after another of Benny’s breaks from the backline.
A fourth Hawks’ try
courtesy of Luke Perry, closely after the third, and at ten minutes left, the Hawks were one away from levelling.
The ensuing series of nailbiting plays and error-driven handovers saw several near-
the-liners for the Hawks, but Clarencetown’s final try hit in the last minute of the game.
The final score, 22-32, belied the efforts throughout, and we look forward to a full side next game.
