WILDLIFE conservation scientist Dr Ryan Witt from the University of Newcastle has recently been commissioned by the National Parks and Wildlife Service to carry out drone surveys for koalas and dingoes in the Myall Lakes National Park and in parts of Hawks Nest. The drones use thermal imaging to identify animal body heat when flying precise transects across wooded areas. This method of surveying is far more productive than traditional techniques, permitting much larger areas to be surveyed in a given time. By Marian SAMPSON ACCORDING to the World Wildlife Fund, Australia has the worst mammal extinction rate of any country in the world, and the catastrophic bushfires of 2019-20 impacted nearly three billion animals and have pushed many more of our precious wildlife on the fast-track towards extinction. The World Wildlife Fund states that the rampant destruction of threatened species habitat continues at an unprecedented rate due to the loopholes and failures of Australia’s national nature laws - The Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act 1999.However we as individuals can contribute to change by becoming citizen scientists. With a rubbery duck bill, webbed feet and fur, the platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) is one of Australia’s strangest and most iconic animals. The platypus is a monotreme, one of only two mammals in Australia that lay eggs (the other is the echidna). They really are like no other animal on the planet. Different groups of First Nations peoples have named the platypus Mallangong, Tambreet, Gaya-dari, Boonaburra and Lar-re-lar. Platypus can be found near Stroud and in the Barringtons.Theplatypus is now at risk of localised extinction in parts of its range. Land clearing, dams and drought destroy important platypus habitat, leaving them with nowhere to go. Extreme events like bushfires can put pressure on populations too. To survive, platypi need a safe habitat to call home. The Platy Project is one that involves recording where platypuses live so we can understand more about this incredible creature, and help prevent further declines in theirThat’snumbers.where citizen scientists can help. There are places within the platypus’ range where sightings have never been recorded, or where they haven’t been seen for a long time. These are our biggest gaps in knowledge. You can help researchers fill these gaps by visiting priority areas, looking for platypuses, and uploading your findings to the University of New South Wales’ platypus sighting database. You’ll also have an incredible time getting out into nature – and hopefully experience the magical moment of spotting a platypus!Designed and created by platypus researchers at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), the platyproject map was created to prioritise the biggest gaps in platypus data. It is known that the platypus has a large distribution – from the tropics of northern Queensland to temperate Tasmania – but little is known about which waterways platypus inhabit, including whether declines in populations or local extinctions have occurred. Filling these knowledge gaps is a big job, researchers at UNSW are calling for the help of the community to tackleTheit. map can help to identify priority areas near you – and then you can head out to see if you can spot a platypus.Youcan find out more at the Australian Conservation Foundation website.

27 TheAugustNewcastle District Pennants competition continued today with Round 3 played under sunny skies with both First National Dolphin sides competing against Raymond Terrace. Division 3 played at Raymond Terrace and unfortunately their winning streak ended with narrow losses recorded in each of the threeThegames.aggregate of the 3 games was reflected in the Master Board result with Raymond Terrace winning by 9 shots, 66-57. At home, the Division 4 side took full advantage of their home green knowledge and although the initial stages were tight, as soon as the wind came up this local knowledge came to the fore and two of the Tea Gardens teams powered away to win with large margins. In the remaining game scores were tied at 17-17 with one end to play and Tea Gardens were holding shot and match point. A great conversion from the Terrace skip saved the game for them and they won 20-17.The damage was well and truly done by them with the Master Bard favouring Tea GardensRound79-45.4next Saturday will see Division 3 play away at Karuah and Division 4 play Hexham at home. 28 August A beautiful sunny day for Sunday bowls today with again a great turnout of players. The Club welcomed Carolyn and Chris Fredericks and Phil Thrift to the wonderful world of lawn bowls.Iam sure they all enjoyed their first taste of what lawn bowls has to offer and they will now go on for free coaching to enhance their playing experience. The competition was won by Rick Islaub, Sandra Leishmann, and Gary Wynne. In other news. Bowlers are requested to watch for dates of the forthcoming annual 'Kneelers vs Grippers' game. This game is a charity event for the 'Start in Life Foundation' which the Country Club and both the Women’s and the Men’s Clubs support.Anomination sheet will be posted shortly, and it will take the form of a mixed triples game.
By John SLATER 24 AUGUST Wednesday dawned bright and sunny for our weekly Nominated Triples competition but it came with a windy sting in its tail, making bowling interesting for the 45 players on the synthetic green. The grass was not played on due to the 50mm of rain the day before. The morning winners were decided by the 'lowest winning margin' and with a 1-point margin Vic Garlick, Col Fossey and Bob Weir prevailed.Theafternoon game was also decided by the 'lowest winning margin' and Rob Young, Dave Garcia and Mark Nightingale won with a 1-point margin. The Garden eatery voucher was won by Col Amos. Our thanks to the garden eatery for this prize.

Dear THEREPetra, could be a scientific reason for the imbalance.Somepeople just don't respond to certain eating plans due to genetic and environmental factors.Itis possible that you are both eating well, but your individual genetic makeup means you are responding in a more beneficial way than your husband. Or .... there could be more insidious reasons at play. Your husband may not be following the 5:2 diet or the Mediterranean diet or the Paleo diet (which only works when you run great distances to hunt and gather your meals, having a heart attack along the way, because the eating plan is full of saturated fats). He may, instead, be following the Bit on the SideIndiet.keeping with its origins, the Bit on the Side diet is marked by deceit. Your husband may happily leave home with his kale, sweet potato and home-made houmous wholegrain wrap, eight almonds, and an apple, but then, unbeknownst to you, he enters the dark side (otherwise known as the drive-through), supplementing this with the all-day big breakfast hotcakes combo with a side of hash browns and strong coffee (don't hold the full-cream milk). He then surreptitiously removes all traces of his fast-food affair, carefully placing the packaging in the bin, wiping the maple syrup residue from the steering wheel, and putting on a new shirt free of deep-fried oil stains. May I suggest you follow him one day (make sure you don dark glasses, a trench coat and smoke a pipe for authenticity) and then you will uncover his seedy underground eating habits and the real reason he is gaining weight while you are losing it. Carpe diem, Jasminda.
DEAR Jasminda, My husband and I have gone on a health kick. After one month, I have lost two kilos and he has gained five. He doesn't want to participate anymore, but I'm thrilled with the results and could eat like this forever. I don't want to cook different meals each day. What do you suggest? Petra B

By John EDWARDS ON Monday 22 August, the Hawks Nest/Tea Gardens Probus Club hosted the third event for the year in the Probus Bowling Calendar. It was also the third event for some two-and-a-half years as all events were cancelled during that time due to Covid. The Probus bowls calendar usually caters for teams from Probus Clubs bordered by Port Stephens, Swansea, Cessnock, Singleton, Scone and Muswellbrook.Theorganisers are in the process of rebuilding the Probus Bowling circuit following the effects of COVID and the decimation of some Clubs that failed to survive the impact of the virus. The local Club is proud to be associated with the movement and the successful Gala Day held at our local Country Club will contribute to the rebuilding process. The day was represented by 16 teams from the various Clubs and although there was room for more, it is a first step to demonstrate that the Probus movement is alive and is recovering.Lawnbowls has played a major part in the activities of various Probus Clubs and does much in cementing the Probus ideals of fun, friendship, and fellowship in retirement. Our Club was well supported with the Gala Day by the Tea Gardens Country Club, the Garden Eatery and the hard work put in by many of our members.Sofar this year our Club has been successful in winning the Kevin Bainbridge Shield at the Morpeth on Hunter Gala Day, held at East Maitland Bowling Club, and our own Gala Day Trophy last Monday. Already two more clubs have lined up to host forthcoming events with Maitland North holding their bowls day next month to be followed by Adamstown.TheHawks Nest /Tea Gardens Probus Club will be represented at both. q Winners of the Hawks Nest/Tea Gardens Probus Gala Bowls Day: Sheila Rattray, John Slater and Irene Roberts.
