Elders celebrated at Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest

‘FOR Our Elders’ was the theme of the inaugural NAIDOC Week event at Tea Gardens Public School on Tuesday, 11 July.

A sunny winter’s day brought many community members to the school campus for an event organised by local Worimi Elder Auntie (Dr) Liz McEntyre, and funded by a MidCoast Council grant.

Council was represented by MCC Mayor Claire Pontin.

Justin Ridgeway from Worimi Local Aboriginal Land Council (LALC) performed the Welcome to Country and Smoking

Ceremony, and Auntie Liz spoke of ongoing cultural ties to the lands, waters and skies, and of honouring the ancestors.

“For Our Elders pays tribute to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander elders’ invaluable knowledge, wisdom and shared history,” Auntie Liz told the gathering.

“This NAIDOC, we salute our elders throughout the thousands of generations, and the continuation of their cultural, spiritual, and educational roles in our community . . . such as the handing down of language, practices, songs and stories to keep culture alive as well,” she said.

Murook and the Worimi LALC people led various cultural activities, including weaving, beading, boomerang

painting, face-painting, and ‘Johnny-cake’ (damper) making workshops.

Kaiyu from Murook, led the ever-popular boomerangthrowing lessons on the sports field, where kids could learn about the various ways boomerangs were employed in hunting.

The Tea Gardens Lions Club donated barbecue services, while Myall River Art Walk Groups’ Jeanette Hart led the creation of the ‘Mullet Run’ mural, a new work of immense cultural significance, which will feature prominently near the beach soon.

All food on the day was free to visitors and sourced locally, with a special celebration cake made by Myall River Bakery.

Auntie Liz also reminded all present it was a special

Work to begin on Booner St

REFURBISHMENT work will begin in the next two weeks at Hawks Nest Community Centre on Booner Street.

MidCoast Council on June 28 voted to release money for the upgrade from its ‘developer contributions’ funds.

“This project was originally funded by a $300,000 community development grant, however, due to an increase in construction costs since the grant was awarded, further funds are required to progress,” MCC’s media team told News Of The Area.

The Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association, which calls the centre home, welcomed council’s move, but said the wait had been five years.

“We are happy to see the community

centre will finally be completed, but are concerned about the cost increase and considerable delay, which was not caused by the community,” HNTGPA President Bruce Murray told NOTA.

The extra funds have been extracted from the Tea Gardens ‘district section 94 contributions plan’.

Council said, “the required balance of funds will be provided from the community facilities section of the plan and the open space section of the plan”.

Money drawn from the ‘open space’ section of the plan would be “repaid in future years, when developer contributions are received”.

Mr Murray said the progress association was concerned that given that the costs had already risen of their own accord, there was

nothing to prevent greater blowouts in the future.

And that, he said, could put more pressure on an already-stretched budget, meaning projects dependent on ‘the plan’ for funding could miss out.

“The progress association has concerns about how the ‘section 94 developer contributions plan’ does not appear to have translated into action in a timely manner, and will continue to lobby council officers for improved transparency and accountability,” Mr Murray said

A council media spokesperson told NOTA on 13 July that contracts for work at the community centre were expected to be exchanged soon, with work expected to begin in a fortnight, weather permitting.

new report suggests.

Seabirds preying on bait schools attracted to the structures supporting the turbines being killed or injured and whales getting lost because of navigational interference are among concerns detailed in the report.

The Australian Trade Fishing Association - while clearly stating it supports the push towards net zero emissions - details potential detrimental impacts on marine life and fishing, shipping, tourism, defence, and aviation industries.

“Issues such as area-exclusion zones, noise generation and electromagnetic impulses that affect migration patterns of fish, mammals and seabirds are not to be taken lightly,” the ATFA report said.

The report, released on June 30, listed wildlife and navigational issues as among potential pitfalls.

“While this is a national issue, the impact in the proposed area for the Hunter-Central

Coast offshore wind farm, for example, covers the prime regions for pelagic sports fishing, particularly marlin, tuna, dolphin, fish and sharks,” the report said.

Energy Corporation of NSW (EnergyCo) is responsible for leading the delivery of renewable energy zones.

The corporation’s own literature states it is integral to “the NSW government’s vision to coordinate investment in electricity transmission, generation, storage and firming infrastructure and transform the NSW electricity system into one that is cheap, clean and reliable”.

A spokesperson for Energyco this week told News Of The Area, “NSW will work closely with the commonwealth on the development of the proposed Hunter offshore wind area, which is located in commonwealth waters at a distance of at least 10 kilometres from shore.

“If the development of offshore wind proceeds in the Hunter region, projects

Viney Creek Vehicular Roll

A LUCKY motorist walked away from the scene of a crash on Viney Creek Road East on Saturday July 8.

Investigations continue, but a combination of poor visibility and a dirt road probably stacked up against the driver.

First responders were the local ambulance, followed closely by the Tea Gardens/Pindimar Rural Fire Service as per standard operating procedure.

“Around 10pm the crew was called to attend a motor vehicle accident on the site, the ambulance was already present,

but there appeared to be no-one in the car, so the site was checked and taped off, and police were informed of the matter in full,” RFS Deputy Captain Ralph Clark told News Of The Area.

North Arm Cove’s Category-1 truck also responded, but was sent home.

The vehicle involved on the night was evidently coming in from the M1 motorway, and would have driven into darkness.

Unconfirmed reports have the vehicle’s owner leaving the scene after phoning their partner.

One of only three viable roadways in or out of Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest townships, Viney Creek Rd East turns off the ridge and almost immediately into a gravelly, dirt road that then swings left at the bottom of a gully.

The other exit roads are via Mungo Brush National Park and Myall Way.

will be required to undergo a rigorous environmental impact assessment and approvals process, which will include assessing potential impacts on the marine environment and bird life,” the spokesperson said.

“Extensive community engagement will also be undertaken as part of this process.

“Environmental approvals will be required from both the NSW government and commonwealth before offshore wind projects are constructed off the coast,” the spokesperson said.

Last week BlueFloat Energy, the developer of the Eastern Rise Offshore Wind Project, welcomed federal Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen’s declaration of the Hunter region as Australia’s second offshore wind zone.

Smaller than originally proposed, the Hunter zone was declared after two months of public consultation with the local community, industry and sea users.

The company’s Eastern Rise Offshore Wind Project is located within the declared zone, between Newcastle and Nelson Bay off the Hunter-Port Stephens coast in NSW.

With as many as 115 floating wind turbines and three offshore substations, the project is proposed for an area 25-45km off the coast.

It is set to generate enough electricity to power 825,000 homes, the equivalent of almost a quarter of all households in NSW.

BlueFloat Energy intends to apply for a ‘feasibility licence’, which will enable further work, including detailed environmental and technical studies, to be undertaken to validate the suitability of the location and inform project design and the environmental impact assessment process.

Nick Sankey, BlueFloat Energy’s Australian country manager, said, “we’re excited about the announcement of Australia’s second offshore wind zone and applaud the government’s feedbackoriented approach.

“We want to create lasting benefits for the Hunter region.

“Our recent public drop-in sessions represent the start of our consultation and there will be plenty of opportunities for feedback during the design and approvals phase.

“This is a fantastic step towards Australia’s clean energy future,” Mr Sankey said.

The company’s environment and planning chief Deb Neumann said consultation was a priority.

“At the public drop-in sessions in the region, we heard that whilst the transition to renewable energy is supported, the community wants a focus on studying the potential impact of the project on the marine environment, particularly whales and migratory birds.

“These studies and related analyses will be undertaken during the environmental assessment phase,” she said.

Wild times at Rocky Point

Stinker's Stories and Fishing

THE 1950s were wild times at Rocky Point with a gathering of squatters, from far and wide, forming a scattered community among the trees.

The squatters eked out an existence any way they could by fishing, lobstering, farming

FOR those keen to fish off the rocks, this is the time of the year to chase one of the meanest, toughest fish that you are likely to encounter.

The rock blackfish, commonly called a black drummer, doesn’t know when to give up.

There are a few tips that will come in handy if you decide to target drummer over the coming months.

Firstly, what is needed is white water, breaking waves crashing into the rocky headlands or outcrops.

If the sea is calm, forget it.

This wave activity fires up the drummer to move in really close, in search of any shellfish or kelp that has been washed into the sea.

Bread berley, ladled into the surge, drives the drummer crackers.

Time to introduce a well-weighted bait of cunjevoi or prawn on a 2/0 hook on a 12kg line.

The lead sinker that you choose is vital to success – too light and your bait washes around on the surface and too heavy you will sink to the bottom and hook Australia, which takes some moving.

Once hooked the drummer will take off like the last bus to Bob’s Farm, that is fast!

The fish is remarkably strong and there is no margin for releasing the pressure.

Lean back and keep winding.

There is a simple technique when targeting drummer and that is – when the drummer pulls, you pull harder.

When fishing off the rocks a life vest is essential.

If you are washed in, you will have a far better chance of survival on the surface than under it.

Rocky Point on an acreage owned by Charles and Nettie Diemar.

As could be imagined, living at Rocky Point was rough, no house, no road, no electricity or running water.

While at Rocky Point, Ron worked on a small boat to trap the surrounding reefs and headlands for lobsters.

Wife Adele worked cutting sticks to make lobster pots and lifting heavy traps with kids at her feet.

Ron was fortunate to be gifted a 1928 Chevy which was abandoned in the bush. When repaired, the car enabled him to travel to collect vines to make traps and gather rocks for ballast to hold the traps against the sea.

Having saved £300 in an envelope the young family left the isolation of Rocky Point and settled in Nelson Bay.

Lookout! The bin’s full

GARBAGE overflowing from bins at Tea Gardens’ Lions Lookout Park is being cleaned up once a week by volunteers, but they can’t keep up.

And it’s not just rubbish from weekend visitors, tyres, ovens and even fridges are being dumped at the park.

The Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association reckon it is up to council to help clean up.

A few months ago, the News Of The Area reported

that council planned to remove eight wheelie bins from Pindimar South Reserve.

The unpopular decision meant the only legal way to dispose of waste was taking it to Tea Gardens Waste Management Centre, and paying for the privilege.

‘Non-urban’ landowners, who pay rates but have no designated garbage pick up, think it’s time council did something.

The transfer station only opens on alternate mornings and afternoons, is shut on Saturdays and

people are illegally dumping waste.

“The Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association acknowledges that council’s current policy is unrealistic, and this is ultimately on council to sort out,” said an association spokesperson.

Lions Club volunteers, who clean the park every Monday morning, report that dumping and overflowing bins are a recurring situation, and have even alerted the Environmental Protection Authority, which has

A quarter century working for women

THE Myall River Voice, Interests and Education of Women Club (VIEW) marked it’s 26th Anniversary at the Tea Gardens Grange Clubhouse on Friday, 14 July.

More than 80 members congregated, including those of sister clubs at Tilligerry, Maitland, Gloucester and Cessnock, as well as guests from the local Red Cross and RSL Sub-Branch, to mark the occasion with a ‘Christmas in July’ fun-filled theme.

Guest speaker and local bush poet, the aptly named Bob Bush, regaled the room with several poems from his renewed compendium “Fair Dinkum Fibs, Facts & Folly”, saying “some of the tales are true, and some could be

true”.

His rhyme was clear and hilarious, as the poems covered Santa’s attempt to use a GPS when Rudolph got the flu, mishaps due to pelicans perched upon the Singing Bridge, some sporting misadventures, a moving tale about an auctioned bugle, and the ‘idiot-proof’ washing machine, as well as a mercifully-abridged ‘Man from Snowy River’.

Music was performed by talented local singer, Jomeca, who has lived in the area since early childhood, and now works as an entertainer at weddings and other functions.

Jomeca sang several Christmas-themed songs throughout, a good warm-up

for the DJ gig she is due to take up at the Women’s FIFA World Cup in Sydney next week.

The marvellous decorations were by VIEW’s own Sheril Johnson, of Hawks Nest Pharmacy’s

koala-logo fame, while all ladies participated in the 100 Club and Tombola raffles of donated hampers.

All proceeds will go to the Smith Family, with which the club has a close connection.

late 1990s, it was a cold, wet winter’s day at the Hawks Nest Golf Club when the inaugural founders, including local advocate for elderly access, Dorothy Thompson (the first vicepresident) joined a meeting

“Plenty of CCTV warning signs have been placed in the area, but they were also torn down,” one Lions Club volunteer told NOTA.

Call to detail emergency volunteers’ experiences

SUPPORTING volunteers who turn out to help in a crisis is a key focus of a new state government consultation.

Communities across NSW regularly band together to support each other through volunteering

with emergency services organisations such as the State Emergency Service, the Rural Fire Service, and spontaneous volunteering when natural disasters hit.

Five million volunteers in NSW contribute about 1.5 billion hours each year,

and the face of volunteering is changing, with existing participants growing older or having less time to help, and the growing frequency of disasters also increasing demand for volunteers.

The government wants to know when and how NSW residents sign up to volunteer programs, and why they choose to

spontaneously volunteer in the face of a crisis or recovery.

It also wants to know about volunteer experiences, motivations and any barriers to joining, to help it enhance recruitment, retention and recognition programs.

Emergency services agencies including the SES, RFS and Fire and Rescue

NSW are being consulted along with volunteers across the state, with everyone able to have their say online.

The Independent and Parliamentary Flood Inquiries identified a need to strengthen emergency services volunteering and will inform a report that will address: emergency management volunteering

and trends, including particular focus on regional and remote areas; opportunities to better integrate spontaneous volunteers into the emergency management framework and; how well placed we are to meet projected future demand for volunteers.

People are encouraged to have their say by 4 August 2023 at: https://www. haveyoursay.nsw.gov.au/ volunteering

Thompson touring electorate

TANYA Thompson’s first three months as The Nationals Myall Lakes MP have been busy, and she’s using the parliamentary winter break to confer with her electors.

“Having been involved with the back-office issues under Stephen Bromhead (her late predecessor of more than a decade) I was really aware of how it all worked and have found that it’s down in Sydney where you make

things work, but I love coming back to the Myall Lakes,” she said.

“It’s a lot of fun finding out what is happening and debating the important issues,” said Mrs Thompson.

“There are many big state issues coming through that impact people in this electorate

“Minister for Regional Health Ryan Park is happy to support us and work across party lines,” Mrs Thompson said, as she continues her lobby for a multi-purpose

health service.

“The minister is happy to come to Bulahdelah to talk about a potential multipurpose service and putting in money for stage three at the Manning Base Hospital and hopefully these will move ahead in a positive direction,” she said.

Other state ministers have also been invited to the electorate.

“We’re In the middle of a cost-of-living crisis and things may get worse,” said Mrs Thompson.

She said anyone could forward questions to her and she would pursue them with the relevant minister.

Hazard Reduction Burn in Tea Gardens

A SMOKY horizon greeted the coast on Friday 14 July, with planned hazard reduction burns reducing fuel loads in the surrounding bush.

Tea Gardens/Pindimar

Rural Fire Service, joined by significant elements from Nabiac and Limeburners Creek stations, performed critical, controlled burning on 6.14 hectares at the top of the hill, along Myall Way and adjacent to the turnoff to Viney Creek Rd and the Lions Lookout.

“This area has not been burned since the 1990s at least,” said RFS Captain David Bright, who acted under supervision as the burn incident controller.

“The main aim is to reduce the fuel load that would otherwise feed a wildfire coming from the west, which could easily overrun the waste management centre,

then the rest of town.”

The combined crew of twenty volunteers also discovered an illegal tyre dump, meaning extra precautions had to be employed.

The team reckoned conditions were near perfect for a couple of days during their hazard reduction burning, and was followed by rain.

The fire’s perimeter was blacked out first, with ongoing fire allowed to burn inwards, the whole burn lasting about 24 hours.

A similar action at Booti Booti National Park added to the pall of smoke, which hung over the hinterland and drifted out to sea as the contained fire quietly burned away under supervision.

“We are coming close

to our scheduled aim of 75 per cent reduction of fuel, and minimised the smoke intrusion across the road, leading to a ‘textbook’ burn,” Captain Bright said.

“It is a job made a lot easier by a good crew.”

There are burns planned across the state, with one planned for Hawks Nest later in the year.

House hunting helping

HOUSE hunters are being offered assistance with the launch of the new online ‘Home Buyer Assistance Finder’.

More than 1,500 first-home buyers take out loans in NSW each month, and this new tool will make it easier to find out if they are eligible for government support.

In just 14 questions or less, the tool can work out a prospective homeowner’s eligibility for the first-home buyer assistance scheme, shared-equity home-buyer helper and or first-home owner’s grant.

People just need to answer questions about their budget, what type of property they are looking to buy, if they are a first homeowner and if they are an Australian citizen.

The tool will then provide information about the available schemes they might be eligible for, cutting the time and effort to find this information and understand the eligibility criteria.

The new tool is part of the NSW government’s commitment to streamlining services so people can access the help they may need to get out of the rental market and into their own home sooner.

Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club News

5 JULY

Our sponsors for this week’s bowls are Tea Gardens Auto and Electrical.

A beautiful day for bowling with 39 players competing in the usual Wednesday competition.

There were 3 pairs teams, and the remainder were triples.

The morning game was decided by the highest winning margin and with a margin of 14 John Parkinson and Bruce Murray were the winners.

The afternoon game was won by Bob Peady, Geoff Muggleton and Dennis Ashbridge.

The highest winning score was the decider and they had 15 points.

The Garden Eatery voucher was won by Col Amos.

Thank you to the Garden Eatery for their continuing sponsorship of this voucher.

There were no birthday attendees here today, but we congratulate Vic Garlick on his 90th birthday.

8 July

The semi-finals of the Club

Championship Singles were played today in cold and windy conditions.

Anthony Grant was playing Bruce Murray and Barry Goode took on his nemesis from last year, Jeff Baker.

It is fair to say the strong wind, more aptly described as a whirling dervish, played a large part in determining the winners in this contest.

Well delivered bowls were blown offline and it was difficult for the players to play with any precision.

However, Anthony Grant, playing with his late father-in-law's bowls managed a great win against Bruce 25-18.

In the remaining match Barry Goode just could not get his bowls in the right place when needed and Jeff was just too consistent running out the winner 25-16.

9 July

Despite the appalling weather with the strong cold southerlies continuing, there was a good gallery in to watch the final of the Club Championship Singles.

Defending champion Jeff Baker

was opposed to Anthony Grant.

Anthony does not play bowls regularly and I suppose the smart money was on the five-time champion, Jeff Baker.

Jeff makes a habit of coming back when down and some of that ability was on display today.

Anthony held a commanding 10shot lead at one stage and in no time, Jeff reduced this to just two shots.

But the barnstorming finish failed to materialise and Anthony

ran out the winner 25-20.

It was an enthralling game, spoiled somewhat by the wind, but today we celebrate a new Club Singles Champion, Anthony Grant.

Congratulations to him and runner-up Jeff Baker and indeed all those that entered and “had a go.”

In other news.

Nominations for the Club Pairs championship are closing shortly with round 1 commencing on Saturday 29th July.

The Write Direction

Navel gazing

I AWOKE this morning with my version of writer’s vacuum. Nothing grabbed me as needing to be explained on the economic front this week, and no pressing community issue needed to be theorised. A period of navel gazing followed while I gave some thought to the world’s economic position.

No matter where you look, the result is either a heaven-or-hell situation.

In my perfect world the police are British, the top chefs are Italian, the best mechanics are German, the best lovers are French and it’s all being organised by the Swiss, the world’s most-efficient nation.

Then we must think about hell and I’m sure this would be where the police are German, the chefs are British, the mechanics are French and the lovers are Swiss and it’s all being organised by the Italians.

I’m not trying to be offensive in any way, as for years I did business with residents in all of those wonderful nations, with the exception of Italy. It probably just shows my poor form when trying to be humorous while little else seems to grab my attention today.

The most concerning missing ingredient when trying to do business today is the lack of service.

It frustrates me to blazes when trying to contact businesses by telephone only to hear that they are experiencing heavier than normal call volumes, but they really want to hear from me and that I could go online or try to call back later on that day. Do I believe that?

Of course not, but it is just their way of being courteous while trying to dodge the contact by having you chase up your query via the internet. They don’t want

Remembering

DEAR News Of The Area, MY husband (of nearly sixty years) keeps saying he is going to sort out his ‘stuff’.

He will have to, as he is a bit of a hoarder and the kids keep telling him it is all going in a skip.

I know he is doing his best when everything goes very quiet.

A box will have his full attention and each piece is examined carefully - then usually replaced.

A very small pile goes into the garbage, but a happy human eventually replaces the box for another time.

It is going to take a while, so it is good that he has plenty of spare time.

Perhaps this is why we have old age - a time for memories?

Regards, L ALLEN, Hawks Nest.

DEAR Jasminda,

AFTER buying a fitness tracking device, I'm now really disappointed that my intense workout is only worth about 350 calories, which is less than one chocolate sundae.

It hardly seems worth it.

Dear Bruce,

Bruce L.

WHAT did we do before devices that are so clever? They track our calories, let us take an ECG with our morning coffee, show us our erratic sleep patterns (which leads to insomnia) and tell us when to move and drink water.

We've become slaves to the machine

to have the cost and inconvenience of providing that service, they need you to do it online.

Banks don’t want you to visit their diminishing branch premises, the new way is to do everything online, which we are told is much easier for us.

Retailers of course are desperate to get you to come into their stores because so many customers have found it easier to buy online.

Online is perceived to be a lesscostly way to buy goods, which are not burdened by the cost of having a retail outlet for which they pay rent and a staff complement to assist with your purchase.

It’s all about reducing the cost of doing business while not providing any real service to assist with your decision making.

An interesting notice I saw in the USA best describes the options we need to evaluate when looking for real service. That notice said “we offer three kinds of service : GOOD : CHEAP : FAST. You can pick any two of the three options and we will willingly supply, but you need to

with people now unable to stop and talk on their morning walk or else they'll slip into non-zone exercise minutes.

My friend sometimes walks around her coffee table just to make up her 250 steps in the hour (hard to achieve during a Zoom meeting).

Another friend's watch was faulty and so she thought her oxygen saturation was dangerously low, except it wasn't. Between fitness trackers and Dr Google, people self-diagnose with the confidence of neurosurgeons when their highest qualification is a Certificate IV in real estate.

There are many positives to your intense workout and the calorie count is just one of them. You're strengthening your bones and muscles, lowering your risk of disease, socialising with others, and improving your memory, among other benefits.

Try not to be obsessive about the statistics. Your neck position from studying your watch and other devices is of more concern than a sneaky sundae now and then. Everything in moderation, Bruce.

be aware of the following reality. Good service and cheap won’t be fast. Good service and fast won’t be cheap. Fast service and cheap won’t be good.”

Many people in business have made the decision in these tough economic times to delete much of their service in order to save costs.

More and more businesses require you to do the leg work and seek your answers online rather than spending time talking with their customers, which was once the reason why you always went to that business with money to spend, because of helpful service.

We who live in regional locations need to sometimes shop outside our immediate locations in order to purchase bigger-ticket items that are not available near home, so service is a critical factor when needing information before buying that product.

One piece of advice might be to slow down and enjoy the journey. Take time for the people in your life because they won’t always be there.

I hear you Jasminda, spot on!

DEAR News Of The Area,

I READ with interest Jasminda’s recent column about certain family matters.

Jasminda, following on from your advice summated to, "once your son

leaves home do not let him store his items at your place", here’s a case study for you

We sold in Sydney and put all our possessions in storage, leaving our sons with the key.

Wrong move - when we found our new home we had the container delivered only to find our sons had put some of their possessions, they couldn't part with, in our container.

Regards, Bev MILES

Lady Hawks defence strong

IMPROVEMENT comes with practice, as the Lady Hawks confirmed with their latest home game result at Myall Park against the Stockton Sharks, on Saturday 15 July.

As play started, some Stockton ladies showed that they were not beyond sacrificing their bodies to make the tagging, and the crowd was privy to more than a few interesting tagavoidance techniques.

With some recently absent Lady Hawks returning to the field, a strong defence was set down, proving its effectiveness with the first major Stockton try attempt saved by a fast chase up the right wing.

With their fancy (and questionable) tag-avoidance dance moves and backingups, Stockton managed their first try, but had to settle for the far corner as Hawks’

central defence remained strong.

Several more Stockton try attempts were miraculously saved, and Sophie Frazer, Chloe Tito and Sara Galea each made some good line breaks and runs, but alas none were to prevail.

Hawks main field kicker, Clarissa Mitchell, was highly consistent, often gaining considerable ground with her strong kicks on the fifthtaggings.

One heart-pounding close chance for a score appeared as the Lady Hawks gained possession from some Stockton knock-ons mere metres out, then made a gruelling push, but Stockton’s defence held out.

An ensuing storm of knock-ons from both sides meant that the first half ended at 0-4 only.

The second half saw some slippery tags go un-torn for Stockton, and few more tries

to them as a result.

Too many Hawks, however, upon gaining possession of the ball and running ahead of the pack, would turn their head to find no-one to whom they could pass, and a few such linebreaks were squandered.

Fortunately, the Lady

Hawks’ amplified defences proved strong enough to save four more tries in the last 3 minutes, mitigating the potential score difference considerably.

The Lady Hawks held fast right until the end, with the final score at 0-16.

Shaq Saunders scored again (and converted his own), making Aberglasslyn’s despair palpable.

One dangerous collision left a player from each side prone, but both were thankfully walked off.

MONDAY JOHN FARNHAM: FINDING THE VOICE

SEVEN, 7.30pm

Iconic Australian singer John Farnham has a voice that millions of fans know and love, but his incredible success belies his humble beginnings. Director Poppy Stockell, who co-wrote this authorised biopic with Spicks and Specks creator Paul Clarke, has crafted an affectionate and fitting tribute to the prodigiously talented performer, who still holds the title to the highest-selling Australian album of all time. Nostalgic, honest and heartwarming, it’s a captivating must-see.

Six years ago, Craig Reucassel shocked the nation and got everyone talking about our waste problem with this series. So, now that he’s back and as driven as ever with this new three-episode instalment, it’s both regrettable and comforting. Since we last saw Reucassel revealing the depths of our waste, there have been positive changes, from supermarkets selling “wonky” fruit and veg to plastic bags slowly being phased out. But there’s still a mountain of problems for Reucassel to highlight and motivate more progress. Find out what we can all do, as he meets inspiring “waste warriors” and uses some cheeky undercover GPS to unearth where our waste really ends up.

WEDNESDAY MINISERIES: ANNE BOLEYN

SBS, 9.30pm

Actress and model

Jodie Turner Smith radiates power and passion in this feminist retelling of the final five months of monarch

Anne Boleyn’s life. Henry VIII’s second and most well-known wife was infamously beheaded for treason after being unable to bear a male heir. Anne is the story’s strong-willed protagonist and it’s told from her perspective. Drama and history blur as we learn of her determination to get her daughter on the throne as she grapples with the patriarchal world enveloping her. This beautifully shot exploration of her character is filled with grim trepidation: we all know the terrible ending that awaits. Billed as a psychological thriller, it’s an affecting ride.
