are a staple in all NSW schools, with the latest for Tea Gardens Public School being held on Thursday, 8 June.

There was something for every kid, as all present participated in the races, running and otherwise, throughout the mild winter’s day, as the weather, too, behaved itself.

“Everything about the carnival was fantastic,” said student Christine O.

Meanwhile, Emily S reported, “My favourite part was the parachute and tug-o-war,” the two events no doubt presenting some

unintended lessons in physics for the kids.

“I loved the 200m race,” said Gypsy, while Samuel L declared, “High jump was my favourite, I was really proud of myself.”

Leroy R energetically announced, “I practiced so hard for the athletics carnival, and had lots of fun!”

“Our Year 6 kids loved the races, especially the 800m,” Principal Mark Clemson told NOTA.

Other novelty events, besides the

mainstay running, long jump and high jump, included the egg-and-spoon race, and the sack race, both of which are secretly excellent ways to get the kids super-active and focused on achieving an outcome... but don’t tell the kids that, it will just spoil the fun.

Whether breaking world records or not, the kids also got to enjoy a classic Aussie sausage sizzle on-site.

The ever-crucial House Competition ended with the following results: 1st Place was Stephens with 320 points; 2nd place

was Corrie with 305 points; 3rd place was Yacaaba with 303 points; and 4th place was Tomaree with 217 points.

Age Champions were: Junior Girl = IvyPearl Carter Hughes; Junior Boy = Lucas Edwards; 11 Year Girls = Isabelle Yuswak; 11 years Boy = Lachlan Mills; Senior Boy = Kade O’Neill; Senior Girl = Rhani Genner.

All event winners who have met qualifying heights, times and distances will now go on to represent Tea Gardens Public School at the Port Stephens Zone Athletics Carnival in Maitland on Friday 21 July, 2023. Good luck to all the Champions at Zone!

FINANCIAL AUDIT

the NSW Audit Office into financial management and governance performance at MidCoast Council.

“Many of the report’s issues reflect the discussions we had with the performance audit team prior to the audit,” Adrian Panuccio, MidCoast Council General Manager said.

Mr Panuccio added that

the audit’s recommendations were “consistent with the improvement path Council had been on since early 2021”, potentially indicating that no further changes may result, after all.

Mr Panuccio sought wins where possible, such as, “The report highlights that our financial governance has progressively improved, which is a positive reflection on the work we have done

to continually review and improve our financial and governance systems and processes.”

Less favourable elements were rationalised as being the result of the audit’s “narrow focus”, and the “missed opportunity for it to provide significant value to the local government sector by taking a wider view”.

“Generally, when a performance audit is undertaken, a number of councils are reviewed, to be

able to draw comparisons and identify common issues and challenges,” Mr Panuccio explained.

“In this case the Audit Office chose to conduct an audit over a single council which doesn’t, in our view, deliver the same benefits of comparing the situation and challenges in different types of councils.”

Mr Panuccio said Council had put their objection to this approach on record.

The report acknowledged

Myall River jetsam boat haul

ELUSIVE pollution has not escaped the vigilant survey performed by the Paddle Pops and Myall River Action Group (MRAG) upon the Myall River at Tea Gardens, on Friday, 16 June.

In a sequel to their previous diligent inspection, the Paddle Pops kayakers, from Palm Lakes Resort, took to the water re-enforced by a motor-boat supplied by Clarrie from the Boatshed Restaurant, arranged with Gordon Grainger from MRAG, to recover more jetsam discovered on the estuary island earlier in the week.

In a true team effort from

the ‘Paddle Pops’ volunteers, with Doug Webber at the helm, Rod Larkin along with Gordon Hutchins collected the rubbish.

“While very little rubbish was located two weeks ago, when we checked out the single folding chair we located a further five chairs, one wooden table, a BBQ some plastic covers plus some garden pots, so went back today to collect them and dispose of them at the Boat Ramp at Tea Gardens,” Rod Larkin of the Paddle Pops group told NOTA.

The haul may lead some to suggest that someone has been attempting to live on the tidally flooded island, or, perhaps this is leftover

flotsam from the houseboat that capsized back during the pandemic in 2021.

The presence of a lawnmower in the middle of the river, however, appears to be the most perplexing

the significant challenges at MidCoast Council in the wake of the 2016 forced merger, which required transitioning and consolidating four separate financial management systems into one.

Mr Panuccio sought support from the MidCoast Council Audit Risk and Improvement Committee, an independent review and advisory body, and Committee Chair Stephen Coates claimed to be

comforted that Council was “doing things the best way they can for their communities” despite opportunities for improvement.

MidCoast Council’s full response to the audit report, along with the audit report, can be found at https://www.audit.nsw. gov.au/our-work/reports/ financial-management-andgovernance-in-midcoastcouncil.

part of the mystery.

“Tea Gardens residents can now be happy that their waterways are spotless and clean until the next clean-up after Christmas 2023.”

Some refreshing beers

were enjoyed by the workers back at the Boatshed after the clean-up.

“Congratulations to you and the team!” Mr Grainger said, representing the MRAG.

Stroud landfill changes from 1 July

LANDFILL operations are set to change significantly, in accordance with a State Government environmental policy.

MidCoast Council has announced that the Stroud Waste Management Centre has just received $168,457 as part of the NSW Government's ‘Landfill Consolidation and Environmental Improvements’ grant. The intention behind the grant is,

according to Council, “to make environmental improvements to landfills, reduce environmental risks, and contribute to the long-term protection of the environment.”

What this means in day-to-day terms is that the Stroud Waste Management facility will be upgraded, and the landfill will close permanently.

“From 1 July we will no longer be operating as a landfill, so cannot accept trucks and large vehicles bringing mixed general waste, which

will have an impact on our commercial and business customers who will have to take this type of waste to our Taree or Gloucester landfill facility,” Council’s Manager of Waste Services, David Rees, told NOTA.

MidCoast Council wishes to advise that this change “will not impact domestic waste customers, with households still able to take excess recycling and problem waste to the facility”.

All domestic waste brought to the Stroud Waste Management Centre will either be recycled and sorted for transport to other facilities, or taken to the recently expanded landfill at Taree.

EPA-approved problem waste like paint, batteries, electronic waste, and scrap metal can still be dropped off for free.

“We will still be able to accept trucks and larger vehicles wanting to dispose of recyclable materials like clean bricks/ concrete, metal and green waste,” Mr Rees added.

One waste type definitely no longer acceptable at the Stroud facility will be asbestos, which will need to be taken to either Gloucester or Taree Waste Management Centres, both of which require an application to be made in advance, with at least 24-hour notice for disposal.

The asbestos waste application can be found on Council’s website, and other further information is available at https://www. midcoast.nsw.gov.au/Services/Waste-andrecycling.

Bulahdelah shines in tourism award

BULAHDELAH has received a judge’s commendation in the small tourist towns category of the 2023 State Top Tourism Town Awards.

This was the first year that Bulahdelah entered the competition and to make the final and then receive a commendation was a massive achievement.

The contest was divided into three sections of tiny, small and large tourist towns, with each category entrant up against some stiff competition.

Each entrant was required to produce a short video highlighting the main features of the area, and an itinerary of what a visitor may do in a short stay.

The votes of the public on various review sites were then tallied, all of which contributed to an entrant’s final score.

In their entry, Bulahdelah emphasised not only the great offerings of their locality, but the town’s role as the centre of the Mid North Coast’s best tourism region.

Bulahdelah used the theme of ‘It’s full of surprises’ as their focus.

“I think it went well,” Event Manager Dale Bradshaw said.

“We had a limited time to respond and there was much talent in our town contributing towards the competition.

“We are very pleased with the result.”

The team behind Bulahdelah’s entry said they

found the process of the award useful as it made them take a hard look and deep dive into what the region has to offer.

The team will now update the information that is available to the general public with the overall aim to improve processes, get new ideas and think critically about how they operate.

The awards were announced at a NSW Tourism Conference in Sydney.

The award was received on behalf of Bulahdelah by MidCoast Mayor Claire Pontin and councillor Peter Howard.

The Bulahdelah Chamber would like to extend a big thank you to the entire team that put together the entry for Bulahdelah and to every person that voted for them.

Beachside mural revived on Bennetts Beach SLSC block

q After: Original artists’ signatures have been preserved from 2008, and the whole, cheerful mural is now protected by varnish.

OCEANSIDE art at Bennetts Beach, Hawks Nest, has been weathered by the elements, but vigilant volunteers from the Myall River Art Walk Group have intervened to bring life back to the special mural at the top of the hill.

The wall of the Tea

Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Life Savers building, next to the clubhouse, was first graced with artworks by several schoolchildren and senior citizens back in 2008.

“The artworks were first applied to plaster boards, then erected on the side of the storage shed at the SLSC,” explained Jeanette Hart from

the Myall River Art Walk Group.

“The weather and seaspray has damaged some of these artworks over the years, with rusting screws, faded and missing paint, so the Art Walk Group decided to revamp them and bring them back to life with a fresh coat of paint.”

Ms Hart and her fellow Art Group members John Hart, Bruce Murray and Sandra Bourke repainted the designs over the last two weekends, and sent out a special thanks to Robert, who lent the group the scaffolding necessary to make the restorations possible.

The team were very specific in their application,

maintaining all the designs and colours as closely as possible to the originals used.

“There were many positive comments from passers-by about the refurbishment and the existing art, and about how bright and cheerful the wall now appears,” Ms Hart added.

Living Through Grief support group at Karuah RSL

GRIEF comes in many forms, and it is often helpful to have someone to talk to about it.

The new ‘Living Through Grief’ group, set up by Lee Clayton and Helenna Anderson, is one such opportunity, meeting

every second Friday at 10:30am in the Boardroom at Karuah RSL.

With the first meeting back in late May, Lee and Helenna’s initiative was sparked upon learning that others had asked around for such a group to talk to, but turned up nothing regular.

“We started it as we think there is a need for people to have a safe place to talk about their grief and loss,” Lee told News Of The Area.

“People who have come said it’s a really good thing to have a place to share and listen to others’ stories, too.”

Lee’s father, James Clayton, who was recently featured in the NOTA

upon his 100th birthday, recently passed away in Tea Gardens, a loss felt by many.

People can come to the group to talk in a safe and comfortable setting with some general input provided by Helenna and Lee, who both have experience in counselling.

Lee emphasises that it is not intended as a professional counselling session, and there is no

need to commit to any sort of regular appearance.

“Just a place where people can come, share their stories, be listened to, reflect on what’s happening, and have some human interaction.”

People may not wish to burden their closest friends and relatives with their grief, but keeping it inside is not healthy, either.

“Karuah RSL is

has also been applied, to help preserve them longer, so hopefully they last more than fifteen years.”

As the stunning finale of the Myall River Art Walk, the Bennetts Beach mural certainly deserves as much attention, culminating all the other pieces along the recently revamped route.

honoured to be able to support Living Through Grief to help members of our community lessen the burden of grief and loss –supporting great volunteer organisations such as these aligns with the core values that our Club prides itself on,” Chris Fraser, General Manager of Karuah RSL told NOTA.

The next meeting of the Living Through Grief group will be on 23 June, and following fortnightly thereafter.

Tea Gardens Public School Parliament officially opened

DEMOCRACY prevailed at the 34th Tea Gardens Public School Student Parliament official opening on Wednesday, 14 June.

Since the first functional sitting back in February, and formal elections in late 2022, the student leaders had had several sessions to get familiar with representing the ‘voice of the children’.

Special guests included State Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington, and former Principal Daryl Martin, who served as the first ‘Governor-General’ at the first Student Parliament, way back in 1989.

Mr Martin has, in fact, attended every Parliament opening, despite retirement, this year coinciding with his birthday, celebrated when Ms Washington led everyone in singing ‘Happy Birthday’.

Proceedings were remarkably realistic under the COLA, with the entrance and fanfare for the 5th Governor-General (Principal Mark Clemson), the Year 6 Government Ministers, and the Year 5 Opposition.

“The TGPS Parliament

and focus on the children’s actions,” Mr Martin proudly informed NOTA, one important standout factor

being the arrangement of the Ministers down the middle of the floor, just like in Sydney or Canberra.

All other students automatically assumed roles as ‘Honourable Members’, and could stand and be heard on any motion that was presented, of which there were several, all guided by Parliamentary Advisor and Year 6 teacher Caitlyn Kelly. State and Federal Governments could learn something here, as the students’ ideas and concerns were presented in clear,

meaningful and honest language to the best of their abilities, well beyond the deliberately baffling behaviour of modern adult politicians.

The timeliest concept was the native-language Welcome to Country at the beginning, and the acknowledgement of the Junior Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (JAECG) as the ‘voice’ of students with Indigenous

“No-one seemed nervous, and all have done an incredible job respectfully, responsibly, and thoughtfully,” came the praises from Kate Washington MP.

Dorin’s Draws By

Dear Jasminda,

WHEN people ask me to events, I genuinely want to go, but as the date draws closer, I realise that I'd much rather stay at home with my dog.

Then I have to attend and be miserable, or come up with a last-minute excuse.

George B.

The Write Direction

In debt we trust

IN my 40 years in the finance and investment game, the one cause of failure that was a constant throughout Australia and the nine overseas countries that I operated in, was debt.

This month the debt crisis in the USA really hit the headlines.

President Biden openly stated that he had only just averted a major financial catastrophe on a scale never previously anticipated.

That the President of the world's largest economy should admit that, must send shivers through every human who knows how the system should work.

The shape and size of the dog we are discussing is mind blowing.

The USA has a population of some 334 million residents who need feeding, housing and health care expenditure from the Government's budget.

Presently the USA has admitted to

a Government debt of US$31.4 trillion. Because they would have been unable to pay any bills after mid-June, their parliament had been asked to come together on a bipartisan basis to approve of the nation's borrowing power to be increased by an eye watering amount in order to avert a financial meltdown.

Please take a moment to think about what “a trillion” looks like.

It is one thousand billion and is written as US$1,000,000,000,000.

Chew on that number if you can then panic when you realise that this is the size of their debt.

Plus, they want to increase it.

Wow.

Nowhere is anyone saying that they need to reduce debt.

There is no positive thought about how or when they might even bring it down a bit, especially as interest rates are rising world wide.

No one is saying ‘How about living within your means?’ or ‘Only spend what your income will allow’.

What they said was ‘Guys, we have run out of money, I know how we will fix it - we will borrow even more’.

The decision they came to was not to increase their level of borrowing.

It would be interesting to know where they thought that kind of money was coming from and what the interest cost might have been.

Dear George,

YOUR intentions are good and it's human nature to be flattered when an invitation is sent your way.

You get that good-time George buzz. But then, as the date draws nearer you start to think of the negatives associated with the quick game of golf or the 40th birthday celebration or the cattle mustering

They settled on allowing the nation to borrow whatever it needed in order to pay its bills for next two years with no limit, when one could assume that another election would take place and hopefully everyone might then forget about the level of debt.

Talk about kicking the debt further down the hill and leaving it to the next administration to do something about it.

I need to say that I have great affection for the American people.

I have many good friends over there, enjoy their country and have visited many times over the past years.

I have also done business with them for over 30 years.

But boy oh boy they are huge risk takers.

To my way of thinking it looks more like the discredited 'buy now and pay later' scheme that our courts are saying is a recipe for financial failure for whoever gets involved with it .

It begs the question, if the only value of a currency is one's confidence in it, and this ever fails, are we looking at another Argentina or one of those banana republics we read about?

Australia has tied its little canoe to the US sized aircraft carrier in order to secure our future, probably because there is no rational other choice due to our isolated location and what we all think could be unfolding for our security in the world.

weekend with your high-school mates. Let's take the last one. When you get the call, you think, heck yes.

You picture yourself on your trusty stead meandering through bushland, a kelpie called Red at your side, the fresh country air, an invigorating canter through a pristine lake.

But then, as the date draws closer, you remember that you haven't been on a horse since you were 12 (and it bucked you off), you don't own any horse riding attire, you have to sign that waiver that states what a dangerous activity it is, potentially leading to injuries including but not limited to death. And suddenly cattle mustering doesn't seem fun anymore. In fact, is feels more like an accident waiting to happen.

When you receive an invitation in future, draw up an advantages/ disadvantages list and give it due consideration before accepting. It's much better to give people lots of warning. Otherwise, you'll be known as Flaky George and no one will invite you to anything.

However, this US debt situation is a troubling event.

If the USA can't keep the confidence factor high, then heaven help all those nations tied to it.

The only way I can think of to resolve this issue is for more US currency to be printed in order to get their job done, in the hope that several other countries may well be doing the same.

As these currencies are devalued, we all retain our relative positions to each other. If the big guy goes down then there is no hope for the rest of us.

Just for interest's sake, the world's largest economies from the biggest downwards are USA, China, Japan, Germany, UK, India, France, Italy, Canada and South Korea. Australia runs at thirteen behind Russia and Brazil.

In many of these countries Governments are trying to provide their citizens with facilities they cant really afford to fund from income, so resort to the politically easy remedy of borrowing or printing more currency in the hope that no one really appreciates what the end looks like.

This also provides the short term remedy that all politicians are looking to achieve for their re-election chances in the next two to five years.

A celebration of the kindness of strangers

DEAR News Of The Area,

THIS is a letter of thanks really.

My partner, a 95-year-old, likes to save money and he likes to shop with that in mind.

I have started shopping online because I hate shopping so that leaves one person at a bit of a loss.

Now he goes off on his own for his

shopping “hit”.

So first to buy a RAT test kit.

At a retail outlet he was told the Library supplies them free!

The Library insisted he have several ‘just in case’.

Leaving his walking stick on the roof of the car he headed for the supermarket with an obvious result, but a thoughtful motorcyclist

watched the stick fall and quickly informed the old fella.

Then a kindly lass saw him collecting said stick and offered her assistance to navigate the road safely.

After shopping successfully for ‘specials’ but forgetting his own bags he had to man handle the loose goods into the car bootanother good soul then offered to assist with

the trolley.

He arrived home safely, if a little late, having plenty of socialising and a successful trip.

What lovely people we have in our community!

MidCoast Youth Awards nominations closing

YOUTH development and community impact will be celebrated once more this year, but the nomination period will soon close, at midnight on Sunday, 25 June.

Opened for nominations LGAwide during MidCoast Council’s Youth Week back in April, the MidCoast Youth Awards are aimed at promoting young people who have “demonstrated personal growth and made a positive impact on their peers and the broader community”.

Covering six categories, including the Arts, Community Service, Leadership, Sports, Wellbeing and Resilience, and Entrepreneurship, the awards recognise valuable contributions made by young people aged 12-24.

Arts include the visual (drawing, filmmaking, painting, photography), literary (fiction, drama, poetry and prose), and performing arts (dance,

music and theatre).

Community Service recognises those who put others’ interests and needs first, to better the community as a whole, while Leadership can range from school captaincy to sporting clubs or community groups.

Wellbeing and Resilience recognises youth who have bounced back from tough times to accomplish positive outcomes, demonstrating inspirational triumph over adversity, or a dramatic increase in self-confidence and ability.

Entrepreneurship acknowledges vision and initiative in getting a new business off the ground, and demonstrating creativity and outside-the-box thinking in overcoming roadblocks.

Every category except ‘Entrepreneurship’ is further split into dual age-groups, a junior 1217 years, and a senior 18-24 years, while the Entrepreneurship is only open to the senior age bracket.

Nominations shall be judged by a panel, and those short-listed will be invited to the awards ceremony in September, where the young winners will be announced, and each awarded an eftpos voucher valued at $250.

Although at the time of printing there will only be one in-person option left to make nominations, at Forster Library, Wednesday 21

Smoked tailor hard to beat

June from 10-12pm, nominations can still be made via an online form at MidCoast Council’s Youth Awards website at https://www. midcoast.nsw.gov.au/Community/ Community-support-and-statistics/ Youth/MidCoast-Youth-Awards.

Emails may be sent to council@ midcoast.nsw.gov.au or phone calls made to (02) 7955 7777, if you require personalised assistance.

The most popular spots are the headlands at Boat Harbour, One Mile, Fingal and Box Beach.

The best beaches are Stockton and Fingal.

I have always found sunrise the best time to target tailor.

Pilchards on ganged 4/0 hooks or any silver lure will do the trick.

As tailor are surface feeding fish it is not necessary to use any lead at all.

Tailor also swim into the port and gather along the Nelson Bay breakwall where they are accompanied by big predators including mulloway.

Wherever there is a school of tailor there is a big chance you will find a mulloway.

In the kitchen I prefer my tailor smoked.

It is a simple exercise.

WE are currently being visited by healthy schools of ravenous tailor keen to attack anything dangled in

front of them.

A much underrated table fish, tailor is one of the few fish that can be caught in every state in Australia. Growing to a thumping

1.2m in length, the fish off our shores average around 1kg and can be found from Stockton Beach north to Tomaree Headland and further north to Little Gibber.

Pickleball takes off in Bulahdelah

BULAHDELAH Tennis Club has recently started up a Pickleball competition, with many enthusiastic players meeting on Saturdays for a bit of a hit and a laugh.

Bulahdelah Tennis Club Treasurer Brett Lamborn said, “It was mentioned at a committee meeting.

“It is taking off around the world and we thought it would be a fantastic addition to what we are doing.”

Pickleball is an indoor or outdoor racket/paddle sport in which singles or doubles hit a perforated hollow plastic ball over a 0.86 metre net in the middle using solid-faced paddles.

Opponents on either side of the

net hit the ball back and forth until one side commits a rule infraction.

Pickleball was invented in 1965 as a children's backyard game in the United States and named after the founder’s dog.

In Australia there are now more than 5000 members and 15,000 players spread across the States, associations and more than 100 affiliate clubs, community groups and businesses.

It has recently become a favourite sport of locals in this area as it can be literally played by those from five to 85 years old.

It is far less strenuous than tennis with the game being a cross between tennis, ping pong and badminton and played on a court half the size of a normal tennis court.

Besides Bulahdelah, contests are

regularly held in Tea Gardens.

The committee wishes to thank the Bulahdelah Chamber of Commerce and Tourism for their generous donation that will enable them to buy new bats, balls and nets.

It is hoped in time that a

Fillet the fish and rub brown sugar on the flesh side before sitting in the smoker above a metho fire. Fantastic hot or cold. Give it a go.

SPORT

dedicated pickleball court will be established next to the existing tennis courts in Bulahdelah.

If you wish to become involved in this exciting new sport contact the committee on 0422389185 or 0438974110.

TUESDAY THE BLACK HAND

ABC, 8.30pm

SUNDAY MASTERCHEF AUSTRALIA

TEN, 7.30pm

For a foodie, cooking is an intoxicating adventure –they’re taking notes while watching MasterChef each night. For others, watching the series is akin to a fantasy – those viewers might also consider scallops with wattle seeds a bit fancy as we dig into a meat-andthree-veg dinner. But tonight, aspiring chefs and casual viewers alike will be inspired to visit their local deli. There’s a caviar taste test in store for the contestants, as well as a challenge to whip up a dish that highlights a particular colour. Tune in to see the reactions from judges Andy Allen (above right), Melissa Leong and Jock Zonfrillo (above centre).

Jump into the heady depths of true crime hidden among Queensland’s cane fields in the 1930s. Presented by award-winning actor Anthony LaPaglia, this is a gripping and unsettling three-part doco that unearths a dark part of the Lantana star’s family story, as well as a dangerous chapter in Queensland’s history. LaPaglia explores the violent reign of the Black Hand – an Italian organised crime gang that operated in Australia’s deep north – and the stigma against Italian Australians between the wars. Featuring cases of arson, extortion, kidnapping and murder, it’s nonetheless a story grounded in hope and optimism as Australia’s new migrants tried to break free from the mafia’s grip.

WEDNESDAY RIPTIDE

TEN, 8.40pm

Sun, sand and surf go handin-hand with in this new soapieesque mystery thriller. A British and Australian co-production, this four-part drama from Jason Herbison and director Scott Major (Heartbreak High), who both cut their teeth behind the scenes on Neighbours, is essentially a whodunnit set by the beach. EastEnders’ Jo Joyner (above) and Neighbours’ Peter O’Brien play a newly married middle-aged couple whose seemingly idyllic life is shattered when O’Brien’s Sean disappears after his daily surf. His wife Alison soon suspects something sinister. Filmed in Melbourne, Riptide is a by-the-numbers thriller buoyed by its leads’ performances.

Hawks slay Cheetahs

TRIUMPH greeted the Tea Gardens Hawks’ latest away game, hunting down the Waratah-Mayfield Cheetahs at Waratah Oval, Newcastle, in their first encounter of the season on Saturday, 17 June.

A week of rest over the King’s Birthday long weekend did not dull the Hawks’ razorsharp talons, as Aiden Bills chipped and chased the ball to score from 30 metres out.

Passing proved profitable on several occasions, like when Luke Perry sent the ball wide to James Sinclair 20 metres out, who then

grounded it in the corner.

After a wide-out pass from Shaqueil Saunders to Bills, Cheetah’s defenders melted away as Bills touched down under the posts, proceeding to convert his own try – a useful habit Bills has formed lately.

In the reversed redux of the ‘Dad and Son’ dreamplay last home-game, Shaq Saunders passed to his father, Ryan, who scored between the uprights, setting up Bills’ successful conversion.

Perry and Bills’ combination landed another chipped kick into the tryzone, from 40 metres out this time, and Bills converted his

own try... again.

Luke Perry soon took matters into his own hands, acquiring the ball 10 metres from his own backline, sprinting the other 90 to the other end, and beating five defenders to score in the corner.

Finally, to confirm that his debut effort last game was no fluke, Shaq Saunders exchanged return passes with Aiden Bills, then took the ball to score under the posts, giving Bills an easy kick to seal the deal.

In a commanding performance to match their raptor moniker, the Hawks landed a grand total of seven

tries, with five successful conversions by kicker Aiden Bills.

The latest stats see Bills secured as the top try-scorer

in the league, with 10, and a close third upon the ‘Top Points’ (conversion kicks) list, with 62.

The Hawks are holding

their position at fourth on the ladder, and as the new cycle starts next week, they will soon gain the opportunity to claw their way to the top.
