THE BULAHDELAH show has returned to be better than ever, celebrating the one hundred years of the gazette of the showground.

After not being able to be held for two years due to COVID restrictions, the 2022 show almost did not happen.

"A few weeks ago we almost called off the show due to the poor conditions of the grounds after months of rain," said Bulahdelah Show President Gary Gooch.

"With the improvement in the weather over the past few weeks, we decided that we would hold a one day event

with traditional events such as the rodeo and camp draft being cancelled," said Mr Gooch.

With near perfect Spring weather, the show was brimming with activity.

There was something for everyone with the pavilion displays, various animal competitions, trade displays and sideshows proving to be the most popular.

Indications were that this was the biggest show in the last forty years.

"For popular evening events such as the

Demolition Derby and the fireworks display the events were highly supported.

"Right around the show ring it was six deep in places," said Mr Gooch.

The Show was officially opened by MidCoast Council Mayor Claire Pontin.

Mayor Pontin also announced the winner of the Young Woman of the Year competition at the opening with Ashley Dorney now advancing to the zone finals in February at Stroud.

Representing retiring Member for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead at the event,

Nationals state election candidate Tanya Thompson said, “Rural shows are the lifeblood of their communities and give everyone the opportunity to see the best aspects of country life.”

The Show Committee is hoping that next year will be bigger and better than ever.

Many thanks to the State Government who provided a grant to offset some costs and the support of MidCoast Council and to the local community who supported this event.

showing a 90 percent increase in losses to $424.8 million over the same period last year.

These numbers vastly understate real losses as only about thirteen percent of victims report to Scamwatch.

The local scam awareness presentation was hosted by the Myall U3A.

“A big thank you to all who supported this very informative session, it was amazing to find out the

level of cleverness these dodgy scammers will go to just to cheat you out of your good, hard-earned money!” said Annie Rutter, Publicity Officer, Myall U3A.

“And, it’s not always money they will attempt to steal from you.

“These horrible people do not discriminate, the more vulnerable you are the harder they hit.

“Essentially what I took away from this presentation was ‘trust no one’.

Of losses due to scams reported to Scamwatch, the highest loss categories

were investment scams ($292.9 million), dating and romance scams ($29 million) and remote access scams ($18.7 million).

The top three most reported scams were phishing (50,015 reports), false-billing (16,263 reports) and online shopping scams (13,068 reports).

The most common contact modes were phone (51,234 reports), SMS (50,947 reports) and email (33,287 reports).

Superannuation can often be a couple's biggest investment asset. Until recently there was an inability for separated de facto couples in Western Australia to include it in their division of property as an asset for adjustment. This limited options available to effect an equitable settlement and sometimes impacted on those clients who were resident in WA when their de facto relationship broke down. It also disadvantaged women who retire on average with half the superannuation of men.

On 28 September 2022 WA came into alignment with the other states and territories, all of which have allowed superannuation splitting for de facto couples for many years.

The Family Court of Western Australia is now able to make

orders splitting the superannuation interests of de facto couples in Western Australia. This includes those with family law proceedings already on foot in respect of their non-superannuation property interests, if those proceedings have not been finally determined. De facto couples will not however be able to seek a superannuation splitting order if they already have final property orders.

The new legislation also extends the federal bankruptcy jurisdiction of the Family Court of Western Australia to enable it to hear bankruptcy proceedings concurrently with family law proceedings for de facto couples, where appropriate.

Super-splitting orders for WA de facto couples now possible FRY BROS

Myall Coast businesses excel in tourism industry awards

LOCAL tourism businesses and individuals were among the winners and finalists at the NSW Caravan and Camping Industry Association Awards in Sydney last week.

“It’s very satisfying to see Barrington Coast tourism businesses and individuals recognised for exceptional best practice and innovation, and we congratulate all winners and finalists,” said Deb Tuckerman, MidCoast Council’s Manager Growth, Economic Development and Tourism.

U3A portrait shoot workshop produces great results

EACH month a photograph is selected at the Myall U3A Photography Group’s meeting to be printed in News Of The Area.

The November photo is a collage from the group’s recent Portrait Shoot Workshop, the first time ever that the Myall U3A Photography Group had held a portrait shoot.

Under the direction of convenor, Paul Mulvaney, eleven photographers took part in the shoot.

“Most, if not all, photographers present had very little or no experience in this field of photography,” said Sue Donohue, Myall U3A Photography Group.

“With cameras, props, lighting, and photographers ready, our model, Jannine, arrived.

“A great time was had by all with lots of learning, trial and error and hundreds of photos later, the group finally packed up, exhausted after a great day of shooting.

“The following fortnight the group had their ‘show and tell’ of edited, printed and photos shown on the big screen.

“The model chose a photo taken by Anita Catharell as her favourite and the one to be printed in the paper.

“Anita is usually a landscape photographer and found the portrait shoot quite a challenge but most enjoyable.”

The group look forward to another portrait shoot next year.

For information on the Myall U3A Photography Group contact Paul at mulvaney@bigpond.com.

• Demolition of the playground at Queen Elizabeth Park and construction of a new playground at a nearby site with better flood resilience.

$1,964,375 for repairs and reconstruction works at Wingham Riverside and tennis courts, including:

• Carpark reconstruction and landscaping at Wingham Riverside Reserve.

• Repairs to landslip, bank stabilisation and tennis court repair at Wingham Tennis courts.

“We know these places are important assets to our community, and repairs on some of these facilities are already in progress,” added Mr De Szell.

Community and Council combine for Karuah revitalisation

THE addition of murals, outdoor spaces and colourful streetscapes are key parts of a recent revitalisation of Karuah, with the community and Port Stephens Council coming together to build towards a brighter and better township.

Port Stephens Council’s Vibrant Places Coordinator Amber Herrmann told

News Of The Area, “The placemaking projects outlined in the Karuah Place Plan are focused on driving social well-being, creating a more connected town centre, better accessibility to the waterfront, and improving community facilities for all to enjoy.”

Placemaking is designed to improve the vibrancy of townships, bringing the community together to

implement the place plan.

“The Karuah Place Plan outlines the key values and priorities of the Karuah community.

“It’s been designed to support the Karuah Growth Strategy by identifying additional opportunities for residential development, employment lands, and public infrastructure.

“Project highlights include: the restoration of the

Karuah Riverbank, Karuah Bridge Mural Project, Café and Restaurant activation project,” she said. Council has confirmed that the Karuah Place Plan is not related to the SRV program, with some projects being funded through Council’s operational budgets, and others to be achieved through external grant funding.

Another initiative in Karuah has been the introduction of a regular community market held at Karuah Public School on the third weekend of every month.

Receiving Council funding, the Garuwa Market provides an opportunity for the community to come together, connect and celebrate local culture and showcase local

Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Motor Club Hosts Visitors

TEA Gardens Hawks Nest Motor Club held a special function on November 8 at a rural property in Pindimar.

Club members and their partners attended in good numbers with their cars on display.

“Special guests on the day were the Austin Healey Car Club of NSW, who travelled from various statewide locations to join the local Club for a luncheon and interesting discussions on the historic/classic motoring scene,” said Ross Anderson, President, TGHN Motor Club.

Austin-Healey was a British sports car maker established in 1952 through a joint venture between the

Austin division of the British Motor Corporation (BMC) and the Donald Healey Motor Company (Healey), a renowned automotive engineering and design firm.

BMC merged with Jaguar Cars in 1966 to form British Motor Holdings (BMH).

Donald Healey left BMH in 1968 when it merged into British Leyland.

The Austin Healey was extensively raced by the Donald Healey Motor Company in Europe at Le Mans and elsewhere with great success.

The range of vehicles on display included sedans and sports cars from manufacturers such as

Austin Healey, Aston Martin, MG, Citroen, VW, Buick, Camaro, Holden, Ford Falcon GS, Chrysler, Morris and Wolseley.

The event luncheon was catered by The Providence Deli based at Hawks Nest, prepared by Ms Caitlin Smith with an excellent range of cuisine.

“All members and guests enjoyed the luncheon held on the rural parkland setting in brilliant sunshine,” said Ross.

The Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Motor Club is now actively planning the 2023 Motorfest to be held on the Myall Park Oval on Saturday March 11.

There are no racing pulses here, only coos of delight and the occasional warm tear drop. In tonight’s season two finale, when James’ parents come to visit him in Darrowby, he makes a big decision about his future. That’s not it for the series’ village-set stories this year: a lush Christmas special is incoming.

After a hiatus from TV and the world of restaurants following the collapse of his dining empire and the end of his more than decade-long stint as a revered judge on MasterChef Australia, George Calombaris (below) returns with this personal ode to his heritage. The fiery and passionate chef promises to show a more mellow and intimate side of himself as he embarks on a delicious journey back to his roots. Calombaris is joined by a familiar face to MasterChef junkies, with 2014 alumni and 2022 runner-up Sarah Todd co-presenting this food lovers’ extravaganza. Tune in for the laughs and good times – as well as the drool-worthy dishes.

WEDNESDAY FISK

ABC, 9pm

From Helen’s (Kitty Flanagan, right) floppy brown suit to George’s (Aaron Chen) blunt mullet and Roz’s (Julia Zemiro) coiffed high hair, it’s the little eccentricities of ’s well-written, imperfect characters that draw you in. Flanagan’s award-winning comedy is a warm-hearted and playful treat. Once you enter the quirky world of awkward lawyer Helen and the shenanigans at small-time agency Gruber & Associates, you never want to leave. Settle in and savour the fun in the season two finale.

In “Snitches Get Riches”, Play School’s Alex Papps and comedian Colin Lane guest star. Trouble is bound to brew when Ray (Marty Sheargold) goes on leave, leaving Helen in charge.

IT HAS been a busy and enjoyable week of bowling for our members.

On Monday 14 November, two teams from Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club competed at the Fingal Bay Triples Invitation Day.

The programme was to be two games of two bowl Triples, ten ends but due to heavy rain overnight and into the morning the green keeper had closed the greens when we arrived at 09:00am.

Thankfully the rain

stopped and we headed out to bowl at 11:00am, with the format changed to one game, two bowl Triples, twelve ends.

Congratulations to Lynda Richards, Deyonne Page and Karen McPhie on winning this event, in which 20 teams competed.

Also well done to Lorraine Murphy, Jean Glover and Robyn Webster on beating a very strong Soldiers Point team.

Tuesday 15 November: The Final of the Major Singles Club Championship, Robyn

Beaumont v Karen Green.

Robyn started strongly, winning the first five ends by one shot (except the third end, where she gained two).

On the sixth end Karen had a win, the score now 6 v 1, it was another six ends before Karen had another win but by this stage Robyn had gained a significant lead.

Karen continued to “give it her best shot” and as often stated, the score does not reflect the standard of the bowling.

Robyn became TGWBC Major Champion (for the third consecutive year), on the nineteenth end winning 25 v 7.

Social bowls was played, but just two games of Pairs, as most of our members opted to watch the Major Singles Finals.

Results of social play

Irene Roberts and Sandra Leisemann 19 v Chrissy Buddle and Pat Baker 9.

Ingrid Luck and Bette Saillard 12 v Lyn Nightingale and Lynda Richards 8.

Winners on the day winning with the lowest score were Ingrid and Bette.

Irene Roberts won the raffle, many thanks to The Garden Eatery for donating the raffle prize. Bev Rhodes was presented her 20 year membership/badge to Women’s Bowls NSW.

Thursday 17 November: Three games, three bowl Triples, twelve ends.

A big win to Chrissy

Buddle,

Polak and Bette Saillard rallied, eventually winning by four shots, 12 v 8.

Liv Everingham, Jean Glover and Dale Cameron led all the way against Deb Gardener, Lynne Green and Deyonne Page winning 14 v 9.

Coming events: Thursday 24 November is the NDWBA Open District Triples, good luck to our three teams who were “inadvertently” entered into this Competition.

Thursday 1 December is the annual RSL Grange LifeCare Trophy Day.

Dorin’s Draws

Dear Jasminda,

On the Couch

The gym I go to takes candid photos of people exercising to encourage others.

Last week there was a particularly unattractive photo of me wearing no makeup, doing sumo squats.

While others may find this encouraging, I just feel embarrassed. Can I ask them to take the photo down?

Oh, Hilda

I can see it now. Your knees bent at impossible angles, your face dripping with sweat, a frown of concentration making you look miserable, your leggings and tank top accentuating parts of you that you don't want accentuated, your sports bra giving you one huge mono-boob.

People who take selfies at the gym generally take them when they first arrive,

from certain angles and with everything simultaneously sucked in and pumped up.

They then apply a filter so every photo shows dazzling white teeth, eyeliner, a slimmed-down torso and a Byron tan.

When you are in the midst of exercise, however, you can't be concentrating on how you look, because you're too busy wondering if you're going to pass out from over-exertion.

It's just not possible to look good in that situation. And maybe that's why the photos are encouraging to others.

They will say to themselves, 'She looks as god-awful as I do when I exercise. Maybe I should join.'

Not that that is much consolation for you, Hilda.

If you see the trainer pointing their phone at you, I would suggest you just hold your towel or your drink bottle over your face, or turn around and face the wall.

The photo may not be a good one, but at least you will be incognito.

Surely you should be able to exercise in private.

Maybe sign one of those 'no publicity photos' forms.

Businesses can't just go about taking photos of their clients without permission.

Carpe diem, Jasminda.

The tale of the Tea Gardens Civic Hall

THE recent consecration of the Myall Masonic Lodge in Tea Gardens started some old memories returning.

The Civic Hall used to be referred to as the Masonic Hall as the Lodge was on the first floor.

The Temple was dedicated in 1924.

The main auditorium, the ground floor, was very much needed by the town in the early days.

The school P & C held

an Annual Ball there to raise funds.

My parents met at the Ball in 1926 and married in 1930.

Our school dances and concerts were held in the hall, with the ladies providing a nice supper.

Each Saturday we would look forward to going to the movies – there were no computers or TV back in the 40s and 50s!

We children would mostly walk to the hall at night, with an occasional adult in attendance.

Our very small town had

free to roam.

Bulahdelah Golf Club News

THE ladies played a stroke round on Wednesday November 16 and the winner was T-L.Smith with 72nett from M.South with 74nett.

T-L also won the putting

with 32 putts, Meg won the J/P and B.Gordon won the NTP.

Meg and Vicki (past member) competed in the Pan Pacific Masters games on the Gold Coast last week and managed a gold medal in

Dolphins Go Close

Champions in either Division would be a dream come true.

But first they had to play a series of elimination matches against some of the best sides in the State to challenge for that heady prize.

Games began in earnest on Friday with each side expected to play two matches each day until eliminated.

Division 3 started well with a good win over

Gwandalan 71-55 in their morning game but fell 5 shots short against Grenfell in the afternoon 71-76.

Similarly, Division 4 managed a good first session win accounting for Tathra Beach 74-41 and in the afternoon succumbed to Miller Park 51-60.

This meant that both sides had to win their Saturday morning games to progress to the quarter finals.

At this level, every shot counts and Division 3 ‘s hopes were dashed when they had a 62-62 draw

the B Grade 2BBB. Well done girls!

The Vets played a 2BBB on Thursday November 17 and the winners with a great score of 50pts were R.Norberry and S.South.

R/Up were D.Brown and

against Camden.

That one shot would have made all the difference and it allowed Camden to go forward based on their for and against record.

Meanwhile at Warilla,

J.Crockett with 48pts. NTPs were M.Donnelly, D.Brown and R.Norberry.

The ladies played a stableford event on Saturday November 19, and the winner was M.South with 36 pts from B.Gordon and A.Benson

Division 4 made the quarter finals by defeating Ettalong 59-48, on Saturday morning and then down to the last four with a single shot victory in the afternoon against Tuncurry Beach 51-

with 35 pts. The Men’s championship continued, and the daily winner was S.McNaughton with 67nett from H.Pierson with 68nett.

NTPs were J.Small and R.Norberry.

Long drivers were J.Small, S.McNaughton, Z.Watt and

50. Sunday dawns with the realisation that our small Club, Tea Gardens, the place we locals keep a closely guarded secret, “somewhere on the coast of Australia,” has a real chance of winning a State title.

Wallacia is the next to fall, 62-50, to the Tea Gardens Dolphins, the Dolphins into the final.

History is made again.

Tea Gardens is a State bowls finalist.

They played Miller Park for the title but fell short 4667.

Both Divisions, sponsored by our local First National Real Estate,

T.Stellema. R.Winter won the J/P.

The Championship leaders after 3 rounds are M.Schlenert, S.McNaughton and S.Moss.

The final round will be played next Saturday, with seeded hit-off times.

played their hearts out and deserve the sincere congratulations of all of us in the bowling fraternity.

Congratulations also to our Management Committee, who somehow found the funds to send the two sides off on their quest, the sole Selector, Peter Gurney, who did an amazing job and our home base the Tea Gardens Country Club, who keeps us bowling every week.

The Club will be holding a ‘Dolphin Day’ commemoration early next month and this will be combined with the raising of the three Pennant title flags from the masthead.
