dinghy into Stroud Showground, and risked his life with other police to free a stranded couple from treacherous water and hidden debris.

“Constable Moffat then completed several rescues, some in the dark of night,” read the Commendation.

“If it were not for Constable Moffat’s resourcefulness and determination, numerous lives could have been lost on the day of the flood.”

Trent insisted that his actions were not special, and his being a locally-based policeman, rather than commuting, made all the difference.

“It’s a big thing to have cops living locally,” Mr Moffat told NOTA, “anyone living outside of town simply could not have responded, they’d have been cut off.”

“I was not alone, and all who could help were helping – a lot of people were doing a lot of things that week, I just happened to be there,” Mr Moffat explained.

As the local Lockup Keeper at Tea Gardens Station, Trent supports the ‘old-fashioned’

concept of police living locally, saying, “It means the cops have local knowledge, and the people know them, so the advantages outweigh any risks.”

“Even if the station is ‘closed’, the Lockup Keeper is always ‘on-call’, which really helps when police have massive areas to cover, the Keepers can be called on to help in isolated areas.”

Not just a local resident, Trent has long and strong family ties to the Tea Gardens area, with founders on both sides of the family, as well as postings at Stroud, Raymond Terrace and Karuah.

Black Dolphin ‘Wubaray’ sculpture officially unveiled

ENVIRONMENTAL art

was unveiled with the Black Dolphin ‘Wubaray of Worimi Barray’ sculpture at Bennetts Beach, Hawks Nest, on Monday, 15 May.

Initiated by the Myall Koala and Environment Group (MKEG), Wubaray contains various examples of common pollutants that too-often end up in our waterways.

An accompanying sign spotlights decomposition periods for the pollutants, some lasting centuries, some forever.

“Over two years ago, it was serendipitous that we had a Black Dolphin ‘Wubaray’ in mind at the Koala Group,” Richard Streamer, President of MKEG told NOTA.

Elder Auntie Liz of the Worimi Wubaray Local Aboriginal Land Council explained, “Wubaray is a Worimi Bakuwi (totem) of extreme importance to us; our ways of knowing, being and doing all come from Wubaray’s high intelligence, hunting skills, adaptability.

“Worimi People and Wubaray are one and the same.”

“As Elders, we are proud to acknowledge this wovenlike sculpture of Wubaray, the Black Dolphin, as one of the increasing numbers of works honouring Worimi Barray,” Auntie Liz McEntyre announced,

before reading from 'The Solution to Pollution’.

“The public art gives visibility around environmental issues and the problematic plastics plaguing our waters.”

After Jan Collison’s research, Wubaray was sculpted by Melbournebased Michael Walker, who always uses recycled materials, and kindly donated the sculpture.

“Thanks to Neil and Therese Smith for collecting it, and all members of MKEG involved in receiving, filling and erecting the Dolphin, with the support of the Worimi, TGHN SLSC, the Progress Association, the Lions Club, and Glen Henry for the sign,” Mr Streamer continued.

“Despite painful

paperwork, we thank MidCoast Council, especially Rhett Patteson, and also Rachel Piercy from Manning Regional Art Gallery for their enthusiastic support.”

“We invite you to visit the Murrook Cultural Centre in Williamtown later this year, where, with the very latest technology, you can see and hear the story of Wubaray, as told by Uncle Graham Russell himself,” Auntie Liz said.

Defective work in Construction Contracts –Part 1

Defective work is a common problem in construction contracts. It can lead to disputes between the parties and can even result in litigation. There are a number of factors that can contribute to defective work, including:

• Poor workmanship

• Faulty materials

• Changes to the plans or specifications

• Errors in the design

• Lack of supervision

When defective work is discovered, the first step is to notify the contractor. The contractor is then responsible for rectifying the defect. If the contractor fails to rectify the defect, the owner may be able to take legal action.

The owner's remedies for defective work will vary

depending on the terms of the contract. In some cases, the owner may be able to:

• Terminate the contract

The owner's choice of remedy will depend on a number of factors, including the severity of the defect, the cost of rectification, and the likelihood of success in court.

EV chargers proposed

ENERGISING electric vehicles (EVs) may become commonplace, as MidCoast Council has announced a proposal to install two EV charging stations in Hawks Nest.

Council was approached by Essential Energy about partnering in the pilot program, which will see basic public EV infrastructure become more easily and prominently available for the growing number of EVs coming into the area.

“The program provides destination style EV chargers within communities where fast style chargers are unlikely to be viable for some time,” Council has noted.

A spokesperson from Essential Energy told News Of The Area, “Essential Energy is working with Councils in our network footprint, and other key stakeholders such as electric vehicle charging suppliers, to support the connection of EV charging infrastructure and provide high level advice regarding the most appropriate locations for Councils and others to install EV chargers.”

With support from Council, the next step is to execute an agreement with Essential Energy for the physical installation.

Bruce Murray, President of the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association Inc., stated, "It is progressive and practical that MidCoast Council approved the installation, which we understand to be located on existing power poles in Booner Street, near Reflections Caravan Park.

“Locals and visitors will be able to 'top up' using what is becoming critical transport infrastructure, enabling them to enjoy our area, whilst also providing sufficient range to access fast charging

systems in larger nearby localities," Mr Murray added, citing the average range of EVs as 40km to 160km range for two hours’ charging.

The Progress Association understands the EV chargers will be funded, installed, and maintained by Essential Energy, with MidCoast Council spending around $200 updating signage about the stations’

location and usage.

The only other EV charging options in town, according to the Transport for NSW ‘Charging map’ website, are three ‘3112 wall outlets’, two located along Marine Drive, Tea Gardens, the third at Providence Bay Park, Hawks Nest, though they are tough to locate.

“There is a crisis in Port Stephens, especially in Karuah,” John Manton, Interim CEO of the Karuah Local Aboriginal Land Council (KLALC) told NOTA.

“Quite a few of our members are on waiting lists for housing, and there are more who simply haven’t come forward for their own reasons, typically knowing how long the waiting lists are.

“It is hard to get little projects done, as tradies in the area are still cleaningup after recent floods and fires, but there is also a shortage of skilled, and

unskilled, tradespeople, as well as materials,” Mr Manton continued.

The shortage of ‘affordable’ and ‘social’ housing, both of which appear to be in short supply, is characteristic of the larger, state-wide problem.

‘Affordable housing’ is defined by the NSW Government as “housing that meets the needs of people on very low to moderate incomes and is priced so that they can afford other basic living costs such as food, clothing, transport, medical care and education”.

‘Social housing’ is defined as “secure and affordable rental housing for people on low

incomes with housing needs, including public, community and Aboriginal housing”.

“Big building companies are not really building ‘affordable’ nor ‘social’ houses, and there is nobody really doing anything else about it,” Mr Manton added.

A cultural issue, according to a UNSW report last year, is that housing is treated as a wealthbuilding investment, not a fundamental human need.

As for rents, NSW Fair Trading website indicates there are no blanket regulations or rent caps presently existing in NSW, which means that landlords can charge as much as they want, so long as any rises happen within explicit timeframes.

Safe path from Peter Sinclair Gardens

YEARS of planning, lobbying and discussion have finally come to fruition, with the beginning of construction on a much-needed footpath along Mirreen Street, Hawks Nest, connecting Peter Sinclair Gardens to Tuloa Avenue.

Especially for the elderly residents of the Gardens, this is a long-held dream-come-

true, and one of paramount safety.

Repeatedly delayed, for unknown reasons, the footpath was first requested in writing to the former Great Lakes Council more than fifteen years, and has left many community members flummoxed as to why it has taken so long.

“This clear community need was again highlighted to the MidCoast Council during

the consultation process for the 2021 Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan,” Sandra Bourke, Secretary of the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association Inc. (HNTGPA), told NOTA.

“It’s great that the footpath linking the Peter Sinclair Gardens Retirement Village to the Hawks Nest shopping centre is finally under construction, as many frustrated locals have lobbied

hard for this footpath over the long years, and HNTGPA acknowledges their efforts.”

Mirreen Street is not only the main thoroughfare for ambulant residents at Peter Sinclair Gardens, but also an extremely busy route between Winda Woppa, the Myall River and Bennetts Beach, with cars, trucks, and boat trailers frequenting the street.

Any pedestrians there

have, until now, courted danger as they inevitably walked along the paved road surface, with no other option.

“The HNTGPA hopes that further such projects, aimed at ensuring access, safety and mobility, will also be pursued, including footpaths out to Winda Woppa via Jimmys Beach, completing the Myall Street crossing upgrade, linking Myall Quays to the skate park, as well completing

During 2022 over 1,600 people took part in pop-

ups, workshops and online activities. Participants provided input on their current use of open space and future outdoor space needs.

“Both locals and visitors said they want better connected green space,

more accessible footpaths and cycleways, more flexible open space, and more activities for young children and teenagers.

“People told us that they value our outdoor lifestyle and want to encourage people with a range of

Volunteers thanked across Hawks Nest, Tea Gardens area

VOLUNTEERING is an inherently selfless task, taken on by many, but feted only so often, as it was during last week’s National Volunteers Week (15-21 May).

The residents of Hawks Nest/Tea Gardens and surrounding villages are certainly no stranger to the concept, with multiple volunteer organisations in active operation, looking out for us and our environment, from the beaches to the bush, keeping fit and active and giving us all more reasons to enjoy our little slice of paradise.

This year, as part of National Volunteers Week, MidCoast Council acknowledged and thanked around 50 local volunteers at the Hawks Nest Golf Club, from a range of invaluable service organisations across the Myall Coast.

With the theme of ‘The Change Makers’, the

organisations represented included the Lions Club of Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association Inc, Myall Koala and Environment Group, Community Technology Centre, Meals on Wheels, Hawks Nest Garden Volunteers, Red Cross, SES, SLSC, Myall Masters, community transport service providers, church groups, as well as volunteers from Pindimar, Karuah and

Bundabah.

“Volunteers are a valuable asset to Council, enhancing service delivery and community wellbeing,” stated MidCoast Council General Manager Adrian Panuccio, who opened the lunch with an Acknowledgement of Country.

BROUGHTON Island regular Mick Dall returned with this thumper 6kg snapper which couldn’t resist a fillet of fresh yellowtail floating down a rich berley trail.

With a couple of smaller snapper in the bag he moved off the reef onto the sand in 50 metres of water and landed a fine catch of flathead.

Well worth the 8 nautical mile trip to Broughton.

I have been asked on numerous occasions ‘what is the best month for snapper?’.

Over the years I have come to the conclusion that snapper are a year round fish that can be caught in all conditions. The main determining factor is water temperature.

You are less likely to catch a snapper if the temperature drops below 18 degrees.

Soldiers Point champions Steve Tye and Barry Peters

have been having a ball lately fishing off the rocks off Rocky Point for early season luderick and a few solid snapper.

With National Parks limiting recreational fishing access to Stockton Beach there is no report from beach fishers. There must be a better way to administer access to the beach as currently the ones who suffer are elderly recreational fishers who hold a beach permit.

How about a key to the gate for locals?

Big sea washes away historical link to the past

THE huge sea that we experienced a fortnight ago claimed one of our few historical structures.

Visitors to Rocky Point will notice that the A frame and remains of an old flying fox, that connected the mainland to Big Rocky, have been washed away.

Built by Anna Bay resident John Buckingham, some 60 years ago, the flying fox was constructed using motor bike wheels and an endless cable on which a 10-gallon tin was suspended.

John waded or swam across the channel to Big Rocky where he would

shovel shell grit into the tin for his wife Chris to pull back across.

The shell grit, which toughened eggshells, was bagged and sent to chicken farmers in the district.

It may surprise some to learn that as far back as the 1930s a small community survived at Rocky Point to mine shell grit and to trap lobsters.

Some names as recalled by One Mile Beach resident David Gamble were Ron ‘Clanka’ McLean and family, Jim de Monte, Arthur Murdoch and the first to be granted a mining lease Arthur Priestly from Patterson.

RFS septic tank replaced

RELIEF was palpable at the Pindimar/Tea Gardens

Rural Fire Service AGM on Thursday, 18 May, as it was officially announced that the Fire Station’s septic tank had finally been replaced.

There was movement at the station, for the word had

passed around, the cause of all regrets had gone away, and they had joined the civilised world with a fully functioning toilet, flush and all.

After groundwater surges from La Nina’s wrath last year, the old septic tank had popped out of the ground in a most unsanitary way, the recent extraction and

replacement of the tank became absolutely necessary.

Several of the 48 members were present at the AGM in Tea Gardens, many visibly moved that they no longer had to consider fundamental functions before heading out to protect the town from fires.

The announcement came

amidst the routine annual vacating and re-electing of leadership positions.

“We finally have basic facilities in Tea Gardens, the first time since August last year,” said Captain David Bright, newly re-instated for another two years by the AGM.

As torrential rain pounded the station’s metal

roof, members inside would have felt a familiar angst about being trapped in a small station with dozens of others.

However, all anxiety has now been flushed away.

“We’d all like to thank the organisations that have helped the local Brigade with donations necessary to make these things happen, since we

Karuah main street grant awarded

AESTHETICALLY pleasing avenues and entryways are set for Karuah, as the town’s Beautification Team has recently been awarded a grant under Port Stephens Council’s Vibrant Spaces program.

Lisa Floyd, owner of the Riverside Motel, will lead the project to landscape the median strip down Tarean Road, as well as the roundabout on the southern turnoff from the highway and Swan Bay.

Port Stephens Council has granted $6000 to the Team, a definite boon for beautification in the riverside

town, as the median strip alone measures 3m wide by 65m long.

“This is for the betterment of the businesses, the town, and its appeal, as it is a very busy spot for accommodation, and people passing through, two hours out of Sydney,” Ms Floyd told News Of The Area.

“We want to put some style into the landscaping, keep the place friendly and looking good, for tourists and locals alike.”

Lisa and the Beautification Team are grateful to Council for making grants and resources available, and they are now busy designing the space, as seen in a supplied conceptual image.

The team is also collecting donated and recycled plants to fill the spaces, subject to approval from the Council.

“We hope to have it rolled out by late July, and when it’s done it should come up beautifully, with a little care and attention.”

Lisa headed the team on a similar, successful project in late 2022, focused on the parklets across from the service station on Tarean Road, and will once again work with the Karuah Progress Association and an army of volunteers.

From that previous experience, Lisa said, “A lot of people got on board when they found out that there were things they could do, everyone’s looking after it.”

Aged care volunteer shines

ONE special volunteer this National Volunteers Week was Patricia ‘Pat’ Burnett, who has been volunteering at Estia Tea Gardens for almost twelve years.

Pat was honoured by the Lions Club’s ‘Citizen of the Year’ back in January, and spoke with NOTA about the benefits of volunteering in aged care.

“I’ve worked in a range of jobs throughout the past, including assisting at a girls’ high school, and 21 years in a clothing factory,” Pat told NOTA.

“I later became nurse to my husband, who was on dialysis, and you know it requires a lot of patience and care.”

Pat gives four days per week assisting the staff at

Estia, running activities, taking residents on outings, and calling bingo.

Originally from Sydney, and somewhat of a globetrotter, Pat moved to the area 20 years ago, and, except for family ties, has never looked back, saying, “There is always something to do here, and it is a safe place for the elderly.”

When Estia was being established in Tea Gardens, just down the road, Pat was at the time “a bit lost for something to do”, and asked if they might need some volunteer help.

To say that she was warmly welcomed is an

understatement, according to Melisa and Lenny, Lifestyle Support Officers at Estia with whom Pat works closely.

“The residents love her, and some want her to be the boss,” Melisa declared.

“When COVID first hit, she did everything – she was amazing, and helped us a lot,” Lenny added.

Pat is just happy that the residents “seem to like” her, and enjoys spending time with them and helping out Melisa and Lenny.

“I like to lead an active lifestyle, and have been very fortunate with my own health, so I am happy to keep going.”

“I don’t worry about things that you can’t control, and enjoy four squares of Old Gold chocolate at 10pm every day,” Pat proclaimed.

Bulahdelah Chamber supports the community

BULAHDELAH Chamber of Commerce and Tourism has set up a grant fund for notfor-profit organisations in the 2423 postcode to improve their infrastructure and improve their offerings to the community.

The fund was set up from some of the proceeds of the sale of the former doctor’s surgery on Stroud Street with the understanding by council that the money raised by the community in its construction would be returned to the community after the sale.

Many community organisations have applied and been successful in receiving much needed funding for their purpose and have thanked the Chamber for making these funds available.

Bulahdelah Rural Fire Brigade have thanked the Chamber for providing funding for a weather station

which will soon be installed on the local RFB station.

“This station will allow locals to gain information about weather conditions locally rather than a remote generic location.”

Bulahdelah Bullets Soccer Club said “a big thank you for supporting our local soccer”.

“Their generous grant meant we could purchase brand new equipment for our kids this year and this keeps our little players having fun, staying active, learning to play in a team all while enjoying the game we love.”

Bulahdelah Men’s Shed thanked the Chamber for their donation to provide new equipment that better meets current safety standards.

Bulahdelah Historical Society President Kevin Carter told Myall Coast NOTA, “We have relied on volunteers’ equipment to maintain our grounds and we would like to thank the Chamber and the

Department of Regional NSW for providing funding for a new ride-on mower which will make our grounds look spick and span.

Other organisations that

have benefited from this grant scheme include St Joseph’s Primary Bulahdelah for improvements to their school garden and Delhuntie Youth Services for improvements to

their buildings.

Josh earns national gymnastics gold and recycling boost

FROM wounded warrior to national gymnastics champion in the space of five months – that is the remarkable transformation for fourteen-year-old Pindimar resident Josh Thompson.

Sidelined with a L4-L5 back injury for the entire 2022 season, the elite gymnast wasted no time in recapturing his form when he returned to full training in January earlier this year.

When the talented Thompson was crowned the Level 9 Under 15

Australian champion after superb performances on all six apparatus at the recent Australian Gymnastics Championships at the Gold Coast Sports & Leisure Centre it was a fitting reward for his determination and will to succeed.

Josh also picked up a silver medal in the National Level 7 Under 13 Division in 2021 after COVID lockdowns.

His proud mother Jade Teelow told News Of The Area, “Josh epitomises courage and discipline and earned his national title through sheer hard work.”

Josh gained a position

at the Gymnastics NSW High Performance Centre in Sydney when he was just eight, two and a half hours travel from his home in Pindimar, and is also part of the Junior International squad.

But the costs added up and Jade and Josh were inspired to look at ways to raise some extra money.

To help cover his travel costs for training and competing, Josh chose to participate in the Return and Earn container deposit scheme, where he has raised more than $10,000 through container returns.

Lions enjoy journey on historic Wangi Queen

MEMBERS and friends of local Lions Clubs joined together recently for a luncheon cruise from Lemon Tree Passage on the Wangi Queen, a 100-yearold, heritage-listed former

ferry.

There were five Lions participants from Soldiers Point, eighteen from Tea Gardens, twelve from Raymond Terrace and several from the Medowie Lions.

A ten cent refund per container may not sound like too much, but from the beginning his motto was, “If you look after the cents, the dollars will look after themselves.”

“His record in one return trip was just over $1,300, and he now averages $800 each return every six to eight weeks,” said Jade.

“We are so very lucky

to live in a small supportive community, it didn’t take long for people and businesses to join in collecting cans and bottles for Josh.”

The teen gymnast is home educated and the fundraising has also been a way for him to access additional learning opportunities.

“I like the life skills Return and Earn has given Josh, like financial literacy, effective communication and business skills,” said Jade.

“But we both like how easy it is and the positive impact it has on the environment.”

Josh has grown up in the Port Stephens and Tea Gardens area and was introduced to gymnastics at the age of five.

He is also a part of the Hunter Sports Centre Mens Training program where he

continues to hone his skills in the Parallel Bars, High Bars, vault, rings, pommel and floor apparatus.

Josh shows a maturity that far belies his years.

At the National titles he competed as an individual against accomplished gymnasts aged from fifteen to eighteen years and mastered his Level 9 skill difficulty to claim gold.

He dreams of representing Australia one day on the world stage.

Jade added that she has been thrilled to see how Return and Earn has changed people’s attitudes to litter.

“Kids are almost pushing each other over to pick up that can or bottle on the ground now instead of turning a blind eye to it,” she said.”

Lions Clubs in the Hunter try to meet up with each other every month or so for fun, and

the all-important networking.

“We meet some interesting people, make new friends, and give each other ideas for fundraising, future fun events, and how we might work together on joint projects,” Sharon said.

THE weekend saw the final instalment of Sail Port Stephens with the ‘Off the Beach’ competitors enjoying great wind conditions with gusts to 15 knots on Saturday.

More than 90 vessels comprising sports boats, J70s, International Canoes, RS Aeros, Finns, OK dinghies, windsurfers and other

classes competed on three race tracks in Day 2 of the Sail Port Stephens Bay Series.

The event was hosted by Bay Sailing Centre, with the boats launching off George Reserve and the nearby beach.

Saturday saw four races for the off-the-beach classes and five for the windsurfers, who took full advantage of conditions.

Also racing on Saturday was the fleet of Port Stephens Yacht Club’s Division One, which saw strong competition and a tight finish in a race that avoided conflict with the Sail Port Stephens Regatta fleet.

The win for the Port Stephens Yacht Club race went to Una Vita followed in second place by Shere Khan with the trimaran Chilli taking a well deserved third

Sail Port Stephens crossed classes of boats however there were some competitors that participated in all three regattas.

Among them were Port Stephens Yacht Club member and Fifty First Project skipper Julian Bell and his fourteenyear-old son Arthur.

“I get so excited leading up to Sail Port Stephens, it’s my favourite time of the year and I'm already so keen for next year,” Arthur Bell said.

The Australian Sports Boat Association and J70 fleets also resumed their racing after completing three windward-leewards on the Friday.

The newly launched Don’t Panic, helmed by Nicky Bethwaite and designed and built by 49er designer Julian Bethwaite, scored two firsts and a fourth to lead the way from Malcolm Dean’s ever-

consistent Shaw 650 Black Betty.

Steven Proud’s Swish was the overnight leader after also posting two wins along with a second placing.

Also consistent was Joust70, helmed by Rod Warren.

Those results remained the same after a further three races on the day, with Don’t Panic winning all three on line and handicap honours to step further clear of Black Betty, with Brett Davis’s The Cube moving into third.

Joust70 reeled in some points with two first placings and a third, while Karyn Gojnich steered Jabiru into third overall.

Leading lights in the Windsurfer class, with 26 starters, were Mitch Cooper, Greg Kay and Josh Green, with skiff legend Andrew ‘Dolly’ Divola holding down fourth place.

Matt Visser showed

exceptional consistency in the Finns, posting three second placings and a first, with rival Rob McMillan taking the first three heats then being deemed OCS in the last race of the day.

Grant Wakefield leads the OK class, and Gary Ratcliffe the RS Aeros.

After the success of the 2023 Sail Port Stephens Regatta competitors no doubt will be looking to register for the 2024 event.

In 2024 the Commodores Cup (PHS) and Port Stephens Trophy (ORC) will run over five days from 15-20 April.

The SPS WindwardLeeward Series featuring the NSW Yachting Championships, TP52 Gold Cup Act 3 and Rob Hampshire Cup (ORC) runs alone from 26-28 April and the trailables and off-the-beach classes event will be held on 19-21 May.

Medicine: a family calling for new Tea Gardens doctor

DR SYED QAISER has joined Ochre Medical Centre Tea Gardens - and he’s delighted to finally settle down in the region. “We’ve moved around a lot!” he says. “We’ve lived in three different states of Australia as well as overseas. You learn a lot from moving, but the kids don’t have ongoing friendships. Now they’re older, I’d like them to be able to stay in one place and put down roots.”

Originally from Pakistan, the family moved to Australia in 2013 after four years of training for Dr Qaiser in Ireland. “Many of my family had already moved to Australia, including my siblings and my parents, so we decided to join them,” he says.

“My wife is a junior doctor, completing her training at John Hunter Hospital. The dream is to join me in the practice when she finishes.”

“At the moment all three kids go to different schools, so every day is a bit crazy!

They’re very helpful, but it’s still a lot going on. Next year should be much easier as they’ll be at the same school.”

But it’s all worthwhile when Dr Qaiser is able to improve the lives of patients. “I really love being a GP,” he says, “it’s the best way of helping your fellow human beings. When I first see patients, I do a comprehensive review and keep them in the loop until I resolve their problem. I try to be as comprehensive as possible and look not only at their medical issues, but any social ones also.”

“I enjoyed hospital medicine and trained in cardiology, but working in general practice is my passion, particularly geriatrics. Taking care of older patients is very satisfying. Their physiology is changing as they age – people don’t always understand that. We have to take it carefully and be very considerate. As people age, they need compassion, devotion and a lot of support

to remain independent and in their own environment.

I enjoy playing my role and managing their health issues with compassion and empathy. ”

I LOVE researching financial matters.

I have been doing it for a living for over 40 years, so it is a hard exercise to retire from. With contacts in Geneva, London, San Francisco and lesser contacts in a number of European and Asian countries, it has been a part of my life for a long time.

Attention now moves to Canberra because of the recent Federal Budget, which dictates the way the financial pendulum is set to swing at home.

Unfortunately, all the recognised sites are now clogged with complaints about our government not delivering for them.

Middle Australia has missed out, retirees have missed out, those on JobSeeker social security payouts are wanting more.

“What a disappointing Budget it has been,” they all cry.

The Government is predicting a surplus - so why are there not any handouts for me? Sorry people, now it is time to get real.

Because May is Budget time, I’m sure that many Australians are confusing this event with Easter.

They must be looking for the free supply of countless chocolate Easter eggs that Grandpa plants in easily located places so the Grandkids can all be winners and collect more than they need, safe in the knowledge that Grandma hovers nearby with a bag full of more chocolate eggs so those crying the loudest can be immediately satisfied when the hunt is over.

This is apparently how all the vested interest groups must consider Budget time in Australia.

Not one second is spent on appreciating how Governments make their money by taxing the working and successful participants in order to help or lift up those who are not contributing to the pie.

They don’t consider that the money Governments print in order to satisfy the demands of those complaining the loudest, must at some time be repaid.

Get real guys, this paper money and financial excesses work as a loan and becomes larger when interest charges are attached.

That then reduces the size of the pie that can be shared in future years.

Obviously, it is all about what I can extract from the system now, so let us not think about the negatives in real world terms: just give me the money as it is all I care about.

Getting back to basics, a budget is just that.

It is an exercise to say that I think our income will be this much, and if it is, then this is how I would expect to spend that money.

It looks like a reasonable response to the financial situation that our country faces, so again, please get real with this position.

This assessment of mine is not a Liberal or Labor thing.

It simply is saying that you voted for a government of a particular political persuasion and the majority of voters decided upon the outcome.

The left side of politics is now in charge and their view of where the direction Australia needs to go has the democratic right to see that direction prosecuted.

There are several stages to avoiding salespeople and the first is to immediately avert your eyes. Once they've made eye contact, you're already well on the way to being fleeced of money for a product that you didn't have any need for just 20 seconds earlier.

If you are already at the eye contact stage, walk as though you are about to miss your bus, that is, so quickly that you build up a sweat. Hopefully they won't catch you.

If they've started their spiel, it's very hard to get them to stop. Salespeople have been provided with specific training and any chatter will give them false hope. Say a firm no, and consider crossing your hands in front of your body like a referee. Yes, you'll look like a twit. That's okay.

Do not under any circumstances let them demonstrate their product on you. If you get to this stage, you've likely lost the battle and will end up giving in and buying something you don't want because you've received a free service. Nothing is free, as you will soon discover.

Finally, if you've been conned, use it as training for the next time you're accosted. It's an expensive lesson, but one that's hard to forget.

You voted for them on their stated promises at the last election.

A real issue is that both sides of politics made “political promises” to electors that if elected they would deliver close to 100 infrastructure projects, so please vote for us. There is something good to be delivered in your area by those promises.

The reality of being elected and facing the issue of where all the money is coming from has seen the immediate result of over 60 of those infrastructure projects being dropped and many others “suspended” or put on hold for future consideration.

Somehow political promises are not regarded as lies or even as economic mistakes.

So, we all need to be aware of that and get real.

THE course was too wet and the rain too persistent for golf on Wednesday or Thursday this week, but 34 men competed in the 27 holes Foursomes Championships on Saturday May 20th.

It was a beautiful day and the course is in great condition.

The 2023 A Grade champions are T.Carroll & M.Bramble with a gross score of 121; 5 strokes clear of the runners up, J.Graham and G.Harvey who won the A Grade nett with 114. B Grade champions are D.Johnston & R.Winter with a gross score of 142; only one stroke

clear of the runners up, R.Norberry & Z.Watt who won the B Grade nett with 109.25.

NTPs were M.Schlenert, M.Moss and B.Newton (x2).

Long drivers were T.Carroll, A.Benson, G.Willadsen and B.Gordon.

The ladies’ Stableford winner was B.Newton with 28pts from B.Gordon with 24pts.

Congratulations to all the winners, and hopefully the weather will be kind next week for our normal competitions, Monthly Mug on Saturday and Mixed Foursomes on Sunday.

Lady Hawks vs Aberglasslyn

THE Lady Hawks Tag Rugby team battled the Aberglasslyn Ants, considered one of the best teams in the Ladies’ competition, at Myall Park on Saturday, 20 May.

On a chilly, breezy autumn morning, the Lady Hawks were spared the recent torrential rains, blessed with a cloudless blue sky for their home game.

Both sides started off with strong defence, repelling repeated scoring attempts, until Aberglasslyn’s Mikayla Welsh twice pierced the Lady Hawks’ farleft backline, to score the first two tries of the day.

Aberglasslyn’s runners were quick on their feet, highlighting the drastic change in play style that the tags demand, making line breakthroughs that much more difficult.

The third try for Aberglasslyn

came via the same far-left corner of the Lady Hawks’ backline, but scorer Teegan Barr brought it

around to ground it right between the posts, giving Liane TempestWilson a clear shot for a successful conversion.

As the second half kicked off, the Lady Hawks came out gunning, and their determination paid off with a brilliant try from Treznae Wolter, to the right of the posts.

Tags, in lieu of tackles, once again introduced interesting tactical twists, as it was no longer about bringing players to the ground, and more about remaining fleet of foot and out of reach.

A prolonged battle up and down the Lady Hawks’ backline resulted in another try, to Aberglasslyn’s Paige Harper, with a successful

Lady Hawks’ valiant efforts to save a runaway down the wing were unfortunately thwarted by the opponents’ fancy passing and persistence, leading to fifth and sixth tries for Aberglasslyn’s Lucy Almond and Teegan Barr.

The ladies on both sides displayed remarkable sportswomanship, presenting excellent role models as they shook hands and gathered for a group photo, and welcomed the Hawks and Paterson Men’s teams onto the field.

Final score, 4 – 28, Aberglasslyn’s way.

The big bowling news this week is the progress of the First National Dolphins Grade 5 side as they battle it out with other Sectional winners

for the Zone 2 Pennant and the possible chance of representing Tea Gardens in the State playoffs.

Matches were played at the Raymond Terrace Bowling Club which is famous for its fast synthetic greens.

Two matches were played today with Tea Gardens winning a close tussle in their first game against East Maitland 56-51.

In their second match

against Raymond Terrace, Tea Gardens was successful again, winning the Master Board 6948.

Tea Gardens needed to win two games in their match today against Lemon Tree Passage to secure a place in the final.

They must have felt confident after their great win against the Terrace as Raymond Terrace had beaten Lemon Tree Passage the day before.

However, two noteworthy

events changed all that.

The match was played on a different green and a strong southerly wind was now affecting the play.

I should also add that the Lemon Tree Passage side had bought along their “A” game.

For a while it looked like Tea Gardens might just manage two wins.

One team was in front for most of the game and another, after a disastrous start, were coming home like an express train.

But it was not to be and

THIS week we had games played from round 4 of our local draw in near perfect conditions.

In the Minis’, game 1 refereed by myself saw the Karuah RSL Wobbegong Sharks score 2 goals to the Lofty Cranes Shovelnose Sharks 6.

The game was high

spirited with both teams playing great soccer.

In game 2 refereed by Lilly Fidden and Beauon Lawrence ended with the Myall Lakes Meats Port Jackson Sharks in front of the Aussie Roofing & Guttering Reef Sharks 6 / 2.

Parents and onlookers were impressed with the level of skill shown by all players.

Our popular “Ice Cream

Shack Best and Fairest” vouchers were awarded to Sunny, Alex McShane, Dylan O’Malley and Brooklyn Mobbs.

Game 1 In the Midis’ grade resulted in Ray White Real Estate Bull Sharks narrowly defeating the Rapley Builders Grey Nurse Sharks 4 / 3.

Both teams played well and enjoyed a hard close game.

After a thwarted runaway to their own back corner by Paterson’s winger, the Hawks’ second spectacular try between the uprights was grounded by Ryan

Saunders, nothing less expected from the Coach of the Hawks’ boys’ team and assistant coach for the Lady Hawks.

Paterson’s Kelly Draper scored early in the second half, with a successful conversion to Harry Drayton.

Hawks Captain Jacob Palm-Wicks ably slipped through a befuddled Paterson defence, scoring a try and setting up Aiden Bills’ third successful conversion.

Hawks topple Paterson

IT was victory for the Tea Gardens Hawks Men's team on Saturday 20 May, toppling undefeated Paterson in a showdown at Myall Park.

Paterson’s determined offence kept the equally single-minded Hawks on their backline to start.

The Hawks’ Braith Cotterill hit hard, pushing back three Paterson attackers in a tackle, before scoring the first try, to the loud crowd eruption from the home-crowd and Lady Hawks, as Aiden Bills kicked his first of three successful conversions.
