time capsule and mural unveiled
MEMORIES and history of the local area, and its veterans, were sealed underground before the Time Capsule and Mural Explanatory Photo Board were officially unveiled at ANZAC Park, Tea Gardens, on Sunday, 23 April.
This unveiling was many years in the making, originally planned for 2018’s centenary of the end of WWI, but delayed by COVID.
With the time capsule interred beneath sandstone the day before, speakers at the unveiling included locally-based Anglican Reverend Richard Goscombe, RSL sub-Branch Secretary Jennefer Ross-

Two, which revitalises the area with shade, plants, lighting, art, and even a stage,” Bruce Murray, Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association (HNTGPA) President told NOTA.
Upon seeing the eightyear-old plans, Kaili Kitchen, owner of the Plaza’s Café Providence since February, said, “The possibilities are huge – we could run movie nights, footy games, live music, and integrate local Aboriginal involvement, too.”
The weather is most problematic upon the Plaza, as Ms Kitchen told NOTA, “On a sunny day, we can have a good lunch crowd, but once the rain hits, like it did on Easter, business instantly dries up,” Ms Kitchen said.
Kaili and her daughter daily assemble all the furniture, umbrellas and kids’ area, but must drag it all back in when the weather shifts.
“We want to create a happy, lively, kid-friendly space, for people and their
furry friends,” Ms Kitchen referred to rectifying the desolate emptiness that haunts the Plaza after 4pm.
Mel Singh, of Sundara Massage, also situated on the Plaza, told NOTA, “I actually located my business here because there was already a café, and I like the idea that people can come for a massage and then enjoy the weather and a treat.”
“The Progress Association is keen to work with locals, building on earlier plans to support an upgrade, including working with Council and applying for relevant grants,” HNTGPA President Murray told NOTA.
“We would be happy to see the area revitalised and part of next year's Seniors Festival, linking the renovated Hawks Nest Community Centre and shopping Plaza."
What happens to the home when your elderly parent requires additional care: The Asset Test
by Cavelle Lindsay
When an elderly parent goes into aged care and there a carer (being a child of the elderly parent) who does not receive a carer's pension, the home of the elderly parent may be treated differently depending on whether the carer has been living in the home and if so, for how long.
If the carer has been living in the home for at least two years prior to the parent moving into aged care, the home may be exempt from the assets test for up to two years after the parent moves into care. This means that the home would not be included in the assessment of the parent's assets for the purposes of determining the aged care fees.
However, if the carer has been living in the home for
less than two years prior to the parent moving into aged care, the home may be included in the assessment of the parent's assets. This means that the value of the home would be taken into account when calculating the parent's aged care fees and may need to be sold to help cover the costs of care.
It's important to note that the rules around aged care fees and assets can be complex and may vary depending on the financial circumstances of the parent and the type of aged care facility involved. We suggest you seek advice from an aged care financial advisor for your individual circumstances.

Free Family Fun Day at Tea Gardens Pool
By Thomas O’KEEFE
FAMILY fun was had by all who attended the Free Family Fun Day at Tea Gardens’ ‘The Y’ Pool on Friday, 21 April.
Although rain swept through briefly, nearly giving some organisers heart attacks, the skies cleared into another brilliant autumn day on the last weekend of the school holidays.
A NSW Government initiative dating back to 1989, ‘Youth Week’ is an annual celebration of young people across the state, this year running from April 20-30, with the themes of ‘Connect, Participate, Celebrate’.
While pelicans circled lazily above, the kids on the ground and along the giant Red Rocket in the water built up strong appetites
for the sausages at the nearby free Lions Club BBQ, and the popcorn and snow-cones from Newcastle’s Photobooths, music courtesy of DJ Emile, all completely free of charge.
The kids were able to enjoy the efforts of MidCoast Council, The Y NSW, and several local community service groups, including the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association (HNTGPA), the Lions Club and Myall Masters.
“It has turned out as a fabulous event, with over 80 people attending, and more than 100 sausages served,” Sandra Bourke, Secretary of the Progress Association, told NOTA.
“Great music, great family fun, and thanks to the MidCoast Council, Lions, and Myall Masters, it just goes to show what community cooperation between service groups can
achieve,” Ms Bourke added earnestly.
The event benefited from the State Government’s Youth Week Funding, via the NSW Department of Communities and Justice.
“The Y acknowledges MidCoast Council and the HNTGPA for partnering to host this event, and we see that it supports our belief in the power of inspired young people,” Melissa Morgan, Cluster Manager for MidCoast Y, NSW Sites, told NOTA.
“The young people here today are inspired to get active and engage with the community.”
More information on Youth Week 2023 can be found on the NSW Government’s website at https://www.nsw.gov.au/nswyouth-week-2023.

WWII veteran turns 100
By Thomas O’KEEFE
WORLD War II local veteran James Clayton turned 100 years old on Wednesday, 19 April, surrounded by family and friends in Tea Gardens.
Three Clayton generations united at Estia Health in Tea Gardens, to celebrate James’ centenary with cake, lunch, and a very nice bottle of Veuve Cliquot.
After joining the AIF during WWII, Mr Clayton eventually entered the Royal Australian Air Force, and served with distinction as a Wireless Operator in a Lancaster Bomber over France and Germany from 1944, aged just 21.
“I was one of the lucky ones,” Mr Clayton
previously told NOTA, “Most of my friends and fellow trainees died over France or New Guinea.”
After the War, Mr Clayton joined a successful wool-buying company, eventually becoming its Director, later owning his own company and raising a family.
James, and his loving, late wife Lal, lived at Mallabula and North Arm Cove after retirement.
In 2015, the French President asked to see James’ original wartime log books, and awarded Mr Clayton the French Legion of Honour medal.
From across Sydney, Port Stephens and Forster, James’ two children, four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren visited, and he received video-calls throughout the morning from those who could not attend.
Apart from family messages, Mr Clayton received several ‘VIP’ acknowledgements, from State Member Kate Washington, the Prime Minister, Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Governor-General, and, last but not least, King Charles and Camilla.
“Dad really enjoyed the celebration, so lovely he was awake!” James’ daughter Lee Clayton told NOTA.
“He really wanted to get a letter from the Queen, but I told him, ‘You outlasted her, Dad!’”
Vanessa Cook, Care Director at Estia Health Tea Gardens, told NOTA, “All the staff at Estia wish James the best on his 100th birthday milestone.
“He joins an elite club of Centenarians at Estia, and had a lovely morning with family, friends and staff."
Mr Clayton, genuinely touched by the love from so many on his very special day, announced, “I love you all.”

Fires cause more damage in Bulahdelah
By John SAHYOUN
AFTER a spate of structural fires in Bulahdelah recently, another building has succumbed to the flames.
In the late hours of Saturday 22 April a house on the corner of Stroud and Jackson Streets, Bulahdelah became engulfed with flames with the subsequent fire
destroying the residence.
“I awoke late on Saturday night with the dwelling well and truly alight at the time,” neighbour Eric Saville told News Of The Area.
“It burned for many hours before it was put out successfully,” said Mr Saville, with no damage to adjoining properties being reported.
The Fire Brigade was recalled as it was still smouldering many hours later, with the building eventually put out nine hours after the initial outbreak.
The timber residence was built in around 1870 and
was one of the last remaining buildings from that era in Bulahdelah.
Many local residents can recall living in the home over the years.
The building was currently unoccupied at the time of the fire.
Additional concerns were raised at the time as the fire had damaged nearby power lines, creating a further
hazard.
The cause of the fire has been investigated and there are no suspicious circumstances reported by the investigation team.
The Bulahdelah Rural Fire Brigade would like to thank Tea Gardens, North Arm Cove and Medowie fire services for their assistance in containing this fire.
Peppers Mountain Broadcast Upgrade
By Thomas O’KEEFE
TELEVISION reception is set to improve in and around Stroud, with transmission tests starting from Peppers Hill from 24-28 April.
In an effort to upgrade digital television transmission coverage in the Stroud area, Regional Broadcasters (RBAH) will commence the tests, intended to provide viewers with another option for receiving their television signal.
All five broadcasters (Nine, Seven, WIN, ABC and SBS) will be broadcast from the new site, and specific information regarding whether viewers can receive
the broadcast will need to be sought from an antenna installer.
RBAH has told News Of The Area that since the beginning of digital TV broadcasting, the Hunter region has been affected by a situation called ‘co-channel interference’, often affecting viewers receiving their signal from the Mt Sugarloaf site.
“Co-channel interference is caused by ‘tropospheric ducting’, which has to do with the troposphere, the lowest atmospheric layer, shrinking and expanding with summer heat in the air,” Stephen Brown, Broadcast Engineering Manager at Nine/NBN Newcastle told
NOTA.
“Signals from the relatively strong transmitter down near Wollongong actually bounce off the troposphere, and find their way into the Hunter region, and this causes the interference.
“Stroud seems to suffer from tropospheric ducting quite a bit, however, the Peppers Mountain site is not susceptible to the interference,” Mr Brown said.
RBAH has said that after the work is completed, viewers will have to repoint their antennas to the new site that serves them, and manually re-tune their digital receivers.
The Peppers Mountain upgrade has been delayed by COVID-19, and is the latest in a series of similar upgrades at the Gan Gan and Bulahdelah TV transmission sites, funded by the Federal Government and the free-toair broadcasters under the RBAH.
“If successful, the transmissions will most likely continue running from Peppers Mountain,” Mr Brown added.
After 28 April information on the new sites will be available from www. ninenbn.com.au or myswitch. digitalready.gov.au or your local antenna installer.

Great Lakes Food Trail highlights region’s offerings

from Forster, Wootton, Bungwahl and Bulahdelah areas. The Food Trail aims to raise awareness, stimulate demand and strengthen

Life Savers seek volunteers for next season
By Thomas O’KEEFE
SYSTEMIC volunteer shortages state-wide may mean unpatrolled beaches, as the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Life Savers Club (SLSC) actively seeks new members for the 2023-24 season.
The systemic volunteering shortage is affecting volunteer organisations, including the RFS and SES, also.
“We need more ‘active’ members, who can do beach patrol,” Amanda Osmond, Junior Activities Co-Ordinator at the TGHN SLSC told News Of The Area.
“There are several different roles to fill, and you don’t have to be David
Hasselhoff
to join.”
“We need radio operators, first-aiders, Surf Rescue Certificate and Bronze Medallion holders, as well as drivers for the Inflatable Rubber Boat and the jet skis,” Ms Osmond added.
The TGHN SLSC’s historical longevity sees it as the longest running continuously active SLSC in Australia, remaining open during the World Wars.
While the main patrol appears seasonally on Hawks Nest’s Bennetts Beach, the TGHN SLSC’s purview is geographically massive.
“Our on-call area covers Broughton to Birubi, and all beaches and shorelines
in between, out past the islands, so the need for active members is huge,” Ms Osmond explained.
According to the SLSC, Bennetts Beach is very safe, as there has never been a death under patrol conditions, which could change if the Club does not find more active members.
“We want to dispel any idea that Life Savers are ‘locked in’ forever, we have people come and go with the seasons, from Newcastle, Dungog and Clarencetown, too.
“One recent incident near Tomaree saw SLSC, the Westpac and Toll helicopters, with emergency services,
Sydney to savour the great produce this area has to offer.
Now in its seventh year, the event has become a much-awaited addition to the calendar.
“People love coming to the Food Trail and our future is assured because people want to know where and how their food is grown and that’s the service we provide,” Great Lakes Food Trail committee member Dale Bradshaw told News Of The Area.
“It’s about connecting our producers with the community and how it’s all produced and that’s the ethos of the trail,” said Mr Bradshaw.
At Bulahdelah, visitors to Old Inn Road Vineyard sampled their award winning range of wines and listened to a free talk on ‘What does your wine label tell you’, as well as indulging in some delicious Barrington Coast Creamery cheese.
At Wootton there was the opportunity to enjoy breakfast, lunch, morning and afternoon tea at Hardwood Espresso, with visitors
enjoying delicious artisan bread and pastries made fresh daily by chef Neal.
Just down the road at Great Lakes Paddocks, people were able to enjoy a delicious local produce platter and the always popular Great Lakes ‘wines and cheese’ flights - a sample of three wines paired with artisan cheeses in the stunning Back Paddock.
At Bungwahl there were pastry and pasta treats from the Maltese chef of Josants Kitchen with plants from Coomba Little Farm, and amazing local produce and treats from Palms Artisan Bakery, Topi Hill Organics, Hillside Honey and Farm to Fridge to name but a few on offer.
In Forster, Coastal Brewing company offered tastings of 90 different beers they have developed over the past few years with food from the Devil’s Que.
The next Great Lakes food Trail will be, weather permitting, in Spring 2023 with some exciting new additions.
rescuing some ill-advised rock-fishers,” Ms Osmond told NOTA.
“It’s one of the few volunteer activities the whole family can enjoy,” Ms Osmond said, relating instances when
she had performed rescues with the assistance of her children on duty.
The first courses for new recruits will begin in late August, 2023, and the SLSC hopes to have active
members proficient for the ’23-’24 season.

Stroud and Proud
By Thomas O’KEEFE
RUNNING for over a century, the Stroud Show proved lively as ever over the weekend of 21-23 April.
Visitors enjoyed a full catalogue of country attractions, coming from far and wide to fill up the stock pens-turned-parking lots, and the weather remained blissfully clear throughout the show as dynamic clouds soared overhead.
“We are all very happy with the turnout and the weather, the message is out there ‘Join the crowd and come to Stroud!’” James Harris, President of the Show, told News Of The Area.
Chainsaws roared to life with the ever-famous
wood splitting and sawing competitions, turning enormous, hulking tree trunks into neat and slender beams or discs.
The traditional cattle and horse competitions were held, along with the poultry and specific chicken pavilions, however, for a brief moment all were outshone by the dog-jumping competition, in which Fergus the kelpie scrambled over a 2.4m fence, to the amazement of the crowd.
“Equestrian contenders have travelled from all over NSW, also down from Queensland to compete at Stroud,” Mr Harris proudly informed NOTA.
A stark juxtaposition occurred on Day 2 when
the ute barrel races and the 6-bar show jumping occurred simultaneously on adjacent showgrounds – something for everyone.
Humans proved equally entertaining, with the national-level dancers from Valley Dance Academy alongside the arts displays, and the ever-popular ‘Wife Carrying’ competition (likely unheard of in ‘the City’), clean and active fun was had by couples and kids alike, despite being a great path to mudcovered embarrassment.
“We opened it to kids last year because they all wanted to have a go,” Mr Harris told NOTA.
“About half these kids came all the way from Sydney to carry their siblings in the
race, because they had so much fun last year.”
Several show-goers who hailed from Sydney openly
professed their refreshment about the Stroud Show’s atmosphere and culture, unequivocally declaring
it was vastly superior to anything held recently in the state capital.

EACH month a photograph is selected at the Myall U3A Photography Group’s meeting to be published in News Of The Area.
The photo selected at the recent April meeting is called ‘Bill the Bastard’.
The photo topic for the month was ‘Monuments’ and the photograph was taken by Group Member Pam Ransome.
“During our journey through the South West Slopes area of NSW, as a result of road closure, we took a detour through delightful country twin towns, MurrumburrahHarden, with a population of approximately 82 and 1,900 respectively,” Pam said.
“To the left was a small grassy incline leading to a large workshop (formally the Old Flour Mill) displaying a sign posted boldly – Bill the Bastard.
“Intrigued, we decided to investigate.
“Allowed entry we were awestruck with an imposing bronze sculpture of a magnificent horse carrying five uniformed soldiers, which had been unveiled that morning to the general public,” Pam explained.

Draft On-site Wastewater Management Strategy
MIDCOAST Council is seeking community feedback on a draft On-site Wastewater Management Strategy before 29 May.
There are approximately 13,000 septic systems across the region.
“In developing this new approach, we’ve focused our resources on managing the risks of having such a significant number of septic systems spread across a large geographic area,” said Executive Manager Liveability and Sustainable Development, Gary Mead.
The draft Strategy directs our resources at monitoring unsewered areas where a system failure or malfunction

The draft Strategy was developed over a twelvemonth period in consultation with stakeholders, including landholders, community groups, businesses and government agencies.
“The new Strategy will allow us to have a more strategic and consistent approach to onsite wastewater system management across the region,” added Mr Mead.
The draft Strategy is on exhibition from Monday 24 April to Monday 29 May.
Feedback will be
considered in finalising the draft Strategy before presentation to Council for adoption.

being sent to the Middle East in The Great War with 200,000 other (New South) Waler horses as part of the Australian Light Horse.
Bill’s minder on the 15,000 tonne Leviathan in the Australian flotilla was writer, poet and journalist, 50-yearold AB ‘Banjo’ Paterson.
Bill was said to be unmatched in intelligence, courage and power.
He was a big 17.1hh with a long neck and big rump but no one could ride him except one man - Major Michael Shanahan.
Bill the Bastard is the tale of a bond between a determined trooper and his stoic but cantankerous mount.
They fought together and relied on each other (“Bill the Bastard” by Roland Perry, printed 2012).
In The Battle of Romani in August 1916, with four soldiers down, Shanahan rode Bill into battle to retrieve the four soldiers and return them to safety.
With two on Bill’s rump behind Shanahan and one each side standing in a stirrup, Bill carried the five troopers safely back to camp.
After going back into the battle, Shanahan was shot in the leg and Bill was shot twice but they still continued in battle until Shanahan collapsed in the saddle.
Bill, realizing the seriousness of the situation, then took Shanahan three kilometers through the fighting straight to the vet tent.
Unfortunately, Shanahan lost his leg but they both became heroes.
Bill is permanently placed at the 1st Australian Horse and Australian Light Horse Memorial Precinct in Murrumburrah, NSW.
The artist, Carl Valerius, is a sculptor who works in clay, marble and bronze.
The total cost of immortalizing Bill was $790,000, raised by the small communities of HardenMurrumburrah, government grants and various other sources with $12,000 donated by Carl Valerius to complete the project.

$20,000 grants on offer for community-led mental health projects
REMOTE rural and regional communities across Australia can apply now for grants up to $20,000 for community-driven mental health and wellbeing projects, through FRRR’s In a Good Place (IAGP) program.
Community groups are invited to apply for up to $20,000 to support activities that empower locals to talk, connect, learn, participate and foster help-seeking
behaviours.
FRRR and CCI Giving are offering $250,000 in IAGP grants, a boost of $50,000 on prior grant rounds, thanks to a new five-year partnership.
Jeremy Yipp, CCI General Manager, General Insurance Claims and Chair of CCI Giving, said that since partnering with FRRR in 2018, CCI Giving has seen the direct impact made to 53 mental health-focused
projects funded across remote, rural and regional Australia.
“Seed funding is critical for the smaller community projects so that they can develop a proof of concept for their activity model and see what works and what doesn’t, and why.
“Without assistance from grant programs, such as In a Good Place, these projects may never have
the opportunity to really get off the ground and reach their full potential,” Mr Yipp explained.
Jill Karena, FRRR’s People Programs Portfolio Lead, said that, now in its sixth year, the In A Good Place program continues to provide vital funding to support the mental health and wellbeing of communities across remote, rural and regional Australia.
“Projects funded through the In a Good Place program typically bring people together, sometimes to heal, always to learn.
“The program has a definite and important role to play in supporting rural communities in reducing the stigma surrounding mental health and help-seeking behaviours.
“It helps to bring mental health and wellbeing out in the open – making it OK to talk about and OK to reach out and ask for help,” Ms
Karena said.
Applications opened on 12 April 2023.
There is a two-stage application process.
To get started, a brief Expression of Interest must be submitted no later than 5pm AEST, Wednesday 17 May 2023.
Full details are available on https://frrr.org.au/ funding/place/in-a-goodplace/.

Rescued sea turtle ‘5 Hooks’ returned to ocean home
By Lindsay HALL
ingesting a fishhook, has now been rehabilitated and released back into the ocean.
Sea Shelter wildlife rescuers were alerted to
the plight of the turtle by members of the public.
“A couple of young boys had been fishing when they actually hooked the turtle and
pulled it in,” said Lia Pereira, marketing manager and part of the marine rescue team for Sea Shelter, the ocean conservation group affiliated with Irukandji Shark and Ray Encounters.
“They were unsure as to what to do next, but fortunately we were nearby when they contacted us.”
The experienced team promptly rescued the animal and took it to Nelson Bay Vet for assessment, where radiographs were collected to determine where the hook was lodged.
“We were so shocked to discover that she had not one but five hooks lodged at various positions within the gastrointestinal tract,” said veterinarian Dr Kathryn Stalder.
“She was at significant
risk of life threatening obstruction and intestinal rupture.”
The turtle was transported to Taronga Zoo for treatment and rehabilitation.
The expert veterinary team at Taronga Wildlife Hospital were able to nurse the turtle back to health and successfully release her with the assistance of NSW Police Maritime unit and NSW National Parks and Wildlife on Friday 14 April.
The turtle, affectionately known as ‘5 Hooks’, has been fitted with a radio tracking device attached to her shell so that her movements and the outcome of her release can be monitored.
The Taronga Zoo Wildlife Hospital team have released a Facebook post urging anglers
to dispose of all used fishing hooks and line appropriately to minimise the risk to marine life.
“We’d like to encourage people fishing to take as much care as they can to retrieve their lines, because creatures like turtles can ingest them so easily,” Lia added.
“We also encourage all people who fish not to use stainless steel hooks as they do not degrade and remain a danger for far longer.”
If you find an injured marine animal locally, please contact the Sea Shelter team on (02) 4982 2476, or report to NSW National Parks and Wildlife.
Local vets are happy to receive and assess injured wildlife and arrange further care.

Super shafting situation
DOES anyone remember what happened in Australia on Saturday 18 May 2019.
Well you should, because it could affect your ability to survive comfortably for the rest of your days and you need to make sure that the lessons learnt there are not repeated.
It was of course the Federal Election where everyone seemed to hate Abbott and decided to vote for someone else.
Every tipping chart said that it was a shoo-in for the Labor Party and its leader, Bill Shorten.
In the last two weeks of that campaign Shorten was so confident he responded to the opposition’s calls that required his would-be treasurer Wayne Swan to tell the public where the money was coming from in order to pay for their election promises.
Swan didn’t know, he was just a political front man, but he had employed an advisor
who understood the economic situation to help him explain.
That person has now become the Treasurer of Australia, Jim Chalmers, who advised Swan as follows.
A Labor Government would need money, and the best supply of spare and available money was in the superannuation funds of older Australians.
But, how do we get hold of it without affecting our chances of being elected?
I know he probably said: “It's all those old retirees in the top fifteen percent of retirement incomes and they are not traditional ALP voters, so why don’t we grab their money?”.
Of course that brought about “a tax on retirees” response.
However, what wasn’t understood was that retirees said to their voting aged children “there goes your inheritance” as Franking Credits were to be abolished, amounting to double taxation on your super savings.
A previous ALP Prime Minister, Paul Keating, who originally developed the Franking Credits refund, even came out to criticize his old party.
Every retiree and voting aged family suddenly saw the danger to their inheritance.
Plus, every tradie and person in the workforce suddenly realized “hey, I have super savings and the ALP’s scheme will take my money too”.
Dear Hannah,
IF I were a chook detective (which, thankfully I am not), I would be asking a few pertinent questions about this chook-gnawing incident in order to establish innocence or culpability.
The most obvious question here, is where was said chook during the incident? If it was in its own yard, then your chook-tackling hound is liable for any damages (physical and emotional).
Since the chook can't talk (though I'm sure it clucked a great deal when it saw its sunny-side-up days flash
result of the retirement tax but produced Liberal spin doctor Scomo as Prime Minister.
Scomo had never worked in the real world of economic reality but had the backing of the new age religious groups, who responded the same way as they had in the USA to produce their equally unpopular President.
Both were elected because people didn’t want their superannuation savings raided and then wasted by every Government.
Now in Australia the new PM has decided to fiddle with superannuation again.
The guy who offered and recommended the policy that lost them the 2019 election has now been elevated to Treasurer.
Leopards certainly don’t change their spots, do they?
before its eyes), emotional damages may be hard to assess.
I'd imagine her egg-laying may decline, in which case I think you owe your neighbours, at the very least, a dozen eggs a week until such time as the chook is over its PTSD (Post Thigh-Gnaw Stress Disorder).
If, however, the chook was in your yard, there may be a case that could be put forward in defence of the dog.
I'm sure, if your dog could speak, it would say something about home intruder rights and responsibilities (unless it was a Staffy, like my dog, in which case it wouldn't care what the intruder broke and would just play around, show him where the valuables were kept, and then jump in his car hoping he was going to the beach on the way home).
This defence has limitations and it would be up to the prestigious Hound Court to decide if your dog grabbed onto the chook in some sort of canine-amended Ju-Jitsu move due to its perception of danger (being henpecked, for example).
The following advice would probably not stand up in a court of law and I indemnify myself from being called as a witness. Build a fence, Hannah. You don't want blood on your hands.
lessons from past failures but will probably be a lot more cunning in the way they eventually get your super savings by saying they only want to change a few words and of course say they need to hit the overly wealthy with $3 million or more in super savings.
But what happens then?
Do you think they will just leave it at that?
No way Jose.
Over time every retiree will have their lifetime savings plundered by a high spending Government in order to greatly reduce its debt the easiest way.
These guys have clearly not learnt
It will most likely become the death of super by a million cuts, the dripping tap method, managed by the guy whose advice was to belt the retiree and by that process, those who are still working in order to save capital for a comfortable retirement.
Time to stand up for the Myall River Response to Len Roberts’ letter
DEAR News Of The Area,
I WOULD like to respond to an opinion published in the newspaper dated 13/4 by Col Nicholson.
I read Col’s response to the original story regarding the river's poor health.
The writer was “puzzled” as to the claims made in the original article however I am somewhat dismayed that the writer has not been able to observe over a period of 24 years the build of sand not only in the river mouth (eastern channel) but also further up the river.
I have witnessed over many years (I'm 63 by the way and have been coming here since I was a young child) not only the degradation of the eastern channel entrance, but the death of established mangroves and burial of sea grass by sand.
Remember when there was seagrass near the bridge and oyster leases on the river?
Now it’s all buried in sand!
Navigating the river at low tide at Tea
The election loss by the ALP was a direct Gardens, in front of the local businesses, is becoming problematic due to the encroachment of sand and now I observe abandoned moorings further up the river due to sand encroachment.
We all know what the cause of the sand build up is - now we have to stand up as a community and demand a permanent fix to the issues plaguing the river before we lose it!
Our local Port Stephens Member has made it public that the river health is one of her priorities and now Ms Washington is in government it’s time to put up!
I’ve written to her requesting the river management and dredging program be taken ‘out’ of council’s hands and be managed as part of a wider state government priority to ensure a ‘fair dinkum’ effort is made to fix these issues plaguing our river’s health.
I would urge all other people who agree with me to do the same.
Regards, Dave WOOD, Hawks Nest.
DEAR News Of The Area,
I SHOULD make a few observations about the response by Len Roberts to my recent letter about dredging in the Myall River.
I am well aware of Len’s former role in the Port Stephens and Great Lakes Estuary Management Committee.
I am also well aware of, and respect, the valuable role played by Gordon Grainger and the Myall River Action Group in initiating the ecological health study and the gathering of data.
I am also well aware of the history of Myall Point and the creation of the northern (Corrie Island) channel so I don’t dispute any of his statements about these points.
But Len has made a couple of curious statements about the Coastal Waters Science Unit’s study and the subsequent ecological condition report.
Firstly, for some reason, he refers to the study leader, Dr Peter Scanes, as “a
bureaucrat”.
Dr Scanes recently retired after a distinguished forty year career as an award winning, hands-on, marine and estuarine ecologist.
He would be much better described as a “scientist”, in which capacity he led the study team and co-authored the report.
Secondly, Len dismisses the group’s conclusion that “the ecological health of the river is excellent” as “a falsehood” because at times of restricted flow through the short cut entrance, such as existed during the study period, the lower river is in a more estuarine than marine condition.
Despite the fact that the Science Unit found “a broad range of ecological health indicators” confirmed the health of the river at a time when there were considerable community concerns about it, Len still seems unwilling to accept it.
Regards, Col NICHOLSON, Hawks Nest.

OPINION
Who has the right of way?
DEAR News Of The Area,
I HAVE a place in the amazing place of Hawks Nest and have been coming here for many years, soon to live permanently.
Every time I drive in off the Singing Bridge and stop at the end of Kingfisher Ave, I can't help but wonder why we don't have the right of way.
I think that given there is less
traffic coming from Mungo Brush south, there should be a better solution.
Either a roundabout or a give way sign for the cars coming from Mungo Brush, should make
the traffic flow better, given the number of cars that turn into and out of Hawks Nest.
Surely many others have thought the same thing?
Thanks, Frank CARABETTA.
Misconceptions on the Myall
DEAR News Of The Area, AFTER 65 years on the Myall, I am flummoxed by the irrational reasoning on both sides of the dredging debate.
It all started in 2008 when the river was in a filthy condition.
The popular misconception was that the extreme turbidity
was caused by the partial channel blockage.
Even now, water clarity is erroneously equated to salinity, whereas it is a matter of turbidity.
What caused the extreme turbidity in 2008?
The almost-complete destruction of the seagrass (Zostera capricorni).
Seagrass filters all the suspended mud content, redirecting it to the sand, leaving the water clear.
Seagrasses are the basis of all fish life.
This loss was not an annual cyclical “die back”, it is permanent.
It has been poisoned.
During flooding events, the
water (before 2008) turned a dark purple shade; now it turns brown, The Scanes report (2010) noted on p38 “these changes are not included because they occurred after the data was recorded”. Now you know.
Regards, R ADAMS, Hawks Nest.

SAIL Port Stephens has become a welcome addition to the sporting calendar for the region.
The event has seen fifteen successful years, and commenced on April 24 with a revamp to the regatta formula.
Around 90 yachts are expected
to compete in the inaugural Passage Series.
For spectators it presents beautiful vistas.
For the competitors it more than delivers exciting opportunities in their sport.
This year Port Stephens Yacht Club has nine entries in the fleet.
Michael Kirby, skipper of She’s
The One and Commodore of Port Stephens Yacht Club, believes the event delivers great opportunities to improve sailing skills while showcasing the region.
Sail Port Stephens organisers are anticipating more first-time competitors at the event.
“Our objective was to make better use of the finite number of berths and moorings, in order to grow the event and allow fresh participation,” Regatta Director Paul O’Rourke said.
Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club’s annual feeder race on April 23 saw the 22 nautical mile crossing of Stockton Bight from Newcastle Harbour
Sail Port Stephens also includes an inshore Bay Series that will bring together Finns, Lasers, Tasars, Aeros

HAWKS rugby league sides, both the Mens and Ladies, had the privilege of starting out on home ground, as their respective 2023 seasons kicked off under a mostly sunny sky at Myall Park on Saturday, 22 April.
The Ladies League Tag Hawks faced off against their Raymond Terrace opponents in a thrilling, fast-paced match.
Despite their efforts, the Lady Hawks’ were outflown by the Magpies from the Terrace, going down 28-0 by the final buzzer.
No doubt, as this was the on-field debut for so many of the Lady Hawks this year, the experience alone has given them plenty of ammunition
for the strategy cannons, which will be fired back at the opposing teams in many more matches to come.
The Mens’ first round was a triumphant affair, to say the least.
“It was a win in convincing fashion,” Aaron Neighbour, Vice President of the Hawks RLFC, told NOTA, in somewhat understated modesty.
The Hawks Mens team ‘convinced’ the Raymond Terrace Magpies into a final score of 60-18, a clear and vibrant relief for the home crowd.
Jacob Palm-Wicks, the Hawks’ main kicker, made a staggering ten from ten kicks through the uprights, a feat that even some first-grade kickers would likely envy.
Both the Ladies and Mens teams have a strong season to look forward to, having well and truly greased the gears between last week’s trials and today’s season debut. Whether it is learning from the loss, or homing in on what made the victory so definitive, both the Ladies and Mens Hawks will give their all as the 2023 season gets underway, and remind us all what teamwork and sportsmanship is all about.
and Windsurfers from May 20-21, sailing out of the Bay Sailing Centre.
Trailer sailers are accommodated with three days of passage racing, starting May 19, and a dedicated windward-leeward course will be offered for sports boats and J70s.
The International Canoe class is a late addition to the Bay Series.
The Canoe is the world’s oldest sailing dinghy, dating back to the 1860s.
Sailed solo with hiking planks and a high-aspect sloop rig, they’re exceptionally fast and exciting to sail and watch.
Sail Port Stephens is supported by the NSW Government via its tourism and major events agency Destination NSW, along with sponsors and event partners.

The newly repaired dam beside the 6th green is holding firm and looks fantastic.

19 APRIL
Having recently watched numerous episodes of the Yorkshire Vet, it seems
appropriate that this week’s bowls were sponsored by the Tea Gardens Veterinary Hospital.
It was a lovely day for playing bowls and 52 players
faced our greens today with both surfaces in play.
The grass was a little bit slow, and a lot of short ends were played but the overall number of comments were positive.
Thanks to our green keepers for preparing the

TUESDAY 11 April: Social bowls played 3 games of 2 bowls Fours 18 ends, with Irene Roberts “Swinger Lead” in one game.
Interestingly, all the teams that won did so with big margins.
Results as follows:
Irene, Loretta Baker, Lynda Richards and Deyonne Page 29 v Irene, Christine Fossey, Kathie Rimmer and Dot Dallas 5.
A win for Precy Swaddling, Sheila Rattray, Jeanette Emmett and Ingrid Luck 28 v Dale Cameron, Jan Coomer, Dawn Jones and Dale Winter 8. Pam Gilchrist, Lyn Nightingale, Lorraine Murphy and Pat Baker 28 defeated Chrissy Buddle, Sheril Johnson, Lynne Green
and Sandra Leisemann 17.
Winners on the day winning with the highest margin were Irene, Loretta, Lynda and Deyonne.
Thursday 13 April: Six teams travelled to Lemon Tree Passage to compete in the annual Lemon Tree Passage Women’s Bowling Club v TGWBC Challenge.
This event started in 2014 instigated by our then Club Secretary Vicki Rankin but not played since 2019 due to COVID.
Unfortunately rain stopped play after 4 ends, the scores were tallied TGWBC were announced the winners, winning by 2 shots. No social bowls played due to rain.
Tuesday 18 April: Social bowls a game of 3 bowls Triples and 3 games of Fours all games 18 ends.
surface and overcoming the issues they encountered.
The morning game was decided by the “Lowest winning score” and Chris Fredericks and Daryl Martin were the winners with a score of 10.
A 3-end countback was required.
The afternoon game was decided by the “Highest winning score” and with a score of 17, and a 4-end countback saw Rick Islaub, John Moore and Roman Bondaruk take the money.
The overall winners on the day were Greg Smith, Leigh Hunt, and Neil Kibble with a total score of 32.
One team dropped an “8” yesterday and it was close to a “9”.
No names but it made for some fun after the game.
The Garden Eatery voucher was won by Rick Islaub.
Our thanks to the Garden Eatery for their support.
22 April
In the open gender
Pennant competition, round 8 was played today with mixed results.
The First National Grade 5 Dolphins played Beresfield at home and recorded a good 10-0 win to keep their sectional playoff hopes alive.
All Teams had comfortable wins and the Master Board score favoured Tea Gardens 66-47.
The First National Grade 6 Dolphins played away at Karuah and they recorded a 10-0 win and an emphatic Master Board total 87-35.
Grade 6 remains in 4th place on the Sectional ladder.
The First National Grade 7 Dolphins played away at East Maitland with the side “blooding” some players who are new to Pennant play.
One team managed a commendable 22-22 draw and the remaining two teams fought hard but were out bowled against their more formidable opponents.
Tea Gardens lost the Master Board 45-82.
Despite the loss Grade 7 remain in 4th place on the Sectional ladder.
The final of the Minor Singles was played today with Neil Kibble taking on Peter Campbell.
Both players did well making the final with Neil nearly toppled by the up-andcoming Tony Butler and Peter beating the very consistent Geoffrey Muggleton in earlier rounds.
Unfortunately, I was unable to see the match but the score of 25-7 in Neil’s favour indicates that his past impressive experience told in the end.
Peter has been playing some particularly good bowls lately and has vastly improved his game.
Today’s match will do much to add to his experience.
Congratulations to Neil, Peter and all those who participated. In other news.
There has been a good response to the nominations for the Club Mixed Pairs but with several male nominations still requiring partners.
By the 11th end Sheril Johnson, Irene Roberts and Bev Harrington had an 8 shot lead (14 v 6) bowling against Jan Coomer, Dawn May and Robyn Beaumont.
Robyn’s team won 5 out of the next 7 ends ultimately just losing by 2 shots, 16 v 14.
A close game all the way between Sheila Rattray, Christine Fossey, Jean Glover and Dot Dallas 18 v Pam Gilchrist, Judi Polak, Maureen Campbell and Sandra Leisemann 13.
Same story on the next rink, the winners here Precy Swaddling, Lyn Nightingale, Lorraine Murphy and Lynne Green 18 v Chrissy Buddle, Ingrid Luck, Dale Cameron and Pat Baker 13. Carolyn Fredericks (Swinger Lead), Loretta Baker, Dawn Jones and Robyn Webster took an early lead and held on to it winning against Carolyn, Bev Rhodes, Jeanette Emmett
and Dale Winter 22 v 17.
Winners on the day winning with the highest score were Carolyn, Loretta, Dawn and Robyn.
Thursday 20 April: No social bowls played due to
23 April rain.
With great sadness I am reporting on the passing of our former member Margaret Smith on Wednesday 19 April.

WIN BOLD, 3pm
It’s a historic year for women’s soccer (or football, if you will) in Australia. With the Matildas recently scoring a landmark victory over England, breaking a 30-game winning streak ahead of the FIFA Women’s World Cup on home soil in July, there’s never been a better time to get behind the sport. In what could be another fairytale finish, Western United will play in this year’s A-League Grand Final today, hoping to finish their debut season with the championship trophy in hand. Tara Rushton (pictured above) leads the coverage live from Sydney’s

Reckon you’re smarter than 99 per cent of the population? This new comedic game show aims to tell viewers exactly where they lie among the general populace, with Los Angeles-based Australian comedian Jim Jefferies (pictured) all too pleased to announce the bad news. Starting with 100 contestants, ringed around a stage reminiscent of a Roman amphitheatre, host Jefferies asks a logic question that 90 per cent of 1000 Aussies surveyed answered correctly. Get it wrong, and the fun really begins. Jefferies is in his sharp-tongued and sassy element as he roasts and toasts the contestants, presenting increasingly difficult problems to solve.

PENNANTS bowling competitions bring similarability teams together to compete from local zone areas.
In their most recent contest, Manning Point Bowling Club versed the Bulahdelah Bowling Club to decide the Zone 11 Grade 4 winner of the day in a fiery contest between the two clubs.
“We were a bit off the pace and didn’t have a full team and we had a few that hadn’t competed before.
“The Manning team came in here with a good game plan and pushed hard,” Bulahdelah bowler Guy Rowe told News Of The Area.
“It was a matter of one or two shots at the end
and Manning Point was the better team on the day.”
Bulahdelah Bowling Club director and bowler
Greg Kirkham said, ”About half way through Bulahdelah was leading but Manning Point took over, played a fantastic game and came through at the end.”
John Hones of Manning Point Bowling Club commented, “It was a very enjoyable day and played in the right spirit by everyone.
“This is our second time here. We really look forward to coming to Bulahdelah and it was a fantastic day.”
After 63 ends over three games of 21 ends each the eventual score was Bulahdelah 53 and Manning Point 70, giving the visiting team Manning Point a ninepoint win to Bulahdelah’s one point.
