future in Forestry
By John SAHYOUN
A FORMER Forestry manager has called on MidCoast Council to take a more considered approach to logging practices in the region.
At a recent MidCoast Council meeting a motion was passed unanimously that Council advocate to the NSW Forestry Commission and National Parks to permanently cease all logging in Compartments 41 and 43 of the Bulga Forest and add the compartments to the Biriwal Bulga National Park.

Bulahdelah Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Vice President Kevin Carter, who has had experience as a manager in both Forestry NSW and National Parks NSW, has voiced his concerns to Council based on his extensive knowledge and practice in this field.
Mr Carter noted that although such resolutions provide some traction leading up to a state election, Forestry and National
Parks are state government concerns rather than local government issues.
“This has serious implications for timber towns such as Bulahdelah where about 30 percent of the population are involved directly and indirectly with the hardwood timber industry,” Mr Carter told News Of The Area.
“It would have a devastating effect on our and other towns in this industry should these ideas continue as employment opportunities for such a large number of displaced would be very difficult to fill.”
Mr Carter said that sustainable logging
Churches Unite in Prayer
THE World Day of Prayer is a combined church gathering to pray for other countries.
In the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest area the Anglican, Baptist, Catholic and Uniting churches have been involved for over 30 years, and each church takes it in turn to host the event.
Coordinated services of Christian worship and prayer are held across the world in over 170 countries, directed by the international body – the World Day of Prayer International.
The program for the service is prepared well in advance by women from one focus country of the world.
Each service has an advertised theme and involves Bible readings, prayers and songs and a reflection and is attended by women and men.
Locally, the service involves participants from the four churches offering prayers for, and highlighting the needs of a particular country.

With some areas having been logged up to four times over many decades and the devastating effects of recent bushfires, the forests have demonstrated that over time they can regenerate to their former glory.
Mr Carter hopes that Council may arrive at a more considered response and that a reasoned debate by all concerned parties arrives at a sensible balance between the demand for timber and environmental concerns.

people asking questions.
Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen announced last week in Newcastle plans to create an offshore wind farm zone in a 5000 square kilometre area off the coast stretching from the Central Coast to the Myall Coast.
The Federal Government said the plan will unlock renewable energy jobs, and provide energy and job security for the Hunter region.
The Hunter is an Australian manufacturing powerhouse and home to the nation’s largest smelter.
Establishment of an offshore wind industry in this region could support the decarbonisation and future of onshore manufacturing powered by cheaper, cleaner energy.
Labor says this new renewable energy industry has the potential to create 30008000 jobs in Australia every year.
City of Newcastle has welcomed the prospect of unlocking billions of dollars of investment and hundreds of local jobs after the Federal Government opened consultation into establishing Australia's second offshore wind zone off the coast of Newcastle.
Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said a renewable energy industry built on large-scale offshore wind farms would offer a sustainable new future for Newcastle, which was once home to Australia’s first large scale, land-based single wind turbine at Kooragang Island.
"City of Newcastle has a long history of supporting and implementing renewable energy projects, including becoming the first local government in NSW to move to 100 per
cent renewable electricity," Cr Nelmes said.
“We are committed to transitioning towards a low carbon economy to ensure future generations can continue to enjoy our city and region, and believe that a mix of renewables, including offshore wind, is essential to achieving this target.
"Offshore wind also provides the perfect opportunity to diversify Newcastle’s economy by pivoting thousands of jobs in the local manufacturing, construction, maritime, transport and logistics industries into the renewable energy sector.
"In addition, the accessibility of the Port of Newcastle and our existing local skills base would allow offshore wind to precipitate the emergence of a new renewable energy industry in Newcastle and the Hunter.
"This can unlock billions in new investment in renewable energy infrastructure and pave the way for our city to become the renewable energy hub for the Asia-Pacific region."
Cr Nelmes said the offshore wind industry offers many potential benefits for Newcastle, but was mindful of the need for measures to be put in place to protect and deliver local jobs, and consider any potential impacts on visual amenity and our marine environment.
"With the correct legislative and regulatory framework, offshore wind along the coast of Newcastle has the potential to play a significant role in sustaining our state’s future energy needs, and provide a significant boost to the local economy,” Cr Nelmes said.
Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen said he’s looking forward to hearing from the community about the best way offshore electricity can be harnessed in the region and is encouraging locals to engage with community discussions and online
First MidCoast Economic Development Strategy open for feedback
‘ATTRACT’ and ‘grow’ are the themes of the first MidCoast Economic Development Strategy, currently on exhibition for community comment.
MidCoast Council’s Mayor Claire Pontin has welcomed the draft strategy and is encouraging the community to share their thoughts on it during the public exhibition period.
“Driving local economic growth is something that has a long-term positive impact on the future of all our communities,” Mayor Pontin said.
“Through the implementation of this strategy, we will work with local businesses and business leaders aiming to stimulate growth, attract new residents and businesses and retain jobs, build opportunity, grow existing local industry sectors and diversify the economy.”
The draft strategy has been developed by Council in close partnership with the business chambers across the MidCoast, through the Economic Development Strategy Reference Group.
“I am very pleased to say that when I first reached out to the various Business Chambers to ask for their assistance and involvement in this process, the partnership concept was readily agreed,” Mayor Pontin said.
The draft strategy is based on the objectives of ‘attract’ and ‘grow’.
It includes action areas to achieve these aims.
They centre around workers and professions, investment, businesses, residents, visitors and events.
These actions are a joint responsibility with local business and industry and will rely
heavily on attracting external funding.
“A strategy such as this is a critical tool that local government uses to drive local economic growth.
“Funding to implement the forward focused action plan will need to be jointly provided by Council, State and Federal Governments as well as our local business partners.”
Business, industry and community members are invited to share their feedback on the draft strategy until 2 April.

submissions.
“The world’s climate emergency is regional Australia’s jobs opportunity, and the Hunter is uniquely placed to capitalise on this,” Minister Bowen said.
“An offshore wind zone in the Hunter presents significant opportunities to create new energy sector and manufacturing jobs, drive economic growth and reduce emissions.
“I’m encouraging residents from across the Hunter to have their say on the proposed area and what they would like to see from this offshore zone.”
The consultation process is an opportunity for all community members, workers, residents, industry groups and chambers of commerce to provide feedback.
Submissions will run from February 23 to April 28.
The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water will also facilitate community information sessions, which will be held throughout the region during the consultation period.
For those in the Bay wishing to find out more there is a public meeting being held at Nelson Bay Bowling Club on 9 March 2023 from 5pm - 7pm.
In Hawks Nest, the meeting will be held on Thursday 9 March at the Hawks Nest Community Centre from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Agency Part One: Appointment and Authority
by David Collins
Have you appointed a person or an entity to act on your behalf, possibly in business? If so, they are likely to be your ‘agent’.
If you consider the conduct of your agent has caused loss there are some key principles and questions that need to be considered:
1. The appointment of the agent. This includes looking at how the agent was appointed, whether the agreement needed to be written, and the capacity of the party appointing the agent.
2. What was the agent appointed to do? What power or authority did the agent have to act on your behalf? Were any powers or authority implied? Did the agent have authority to receive payments or discharge debts? The assessment
of an agent’s authority may also consider normal business practices relevant to the appointment.
3. Did the agent perform the act or service that led to the alleged loss? If not, an assessment of the agent’s ability to delegate responsibilities may be required.
4. Has the agent acted outside of the express and implied powers of the agency? If so, those actions may still be binding if they are ratified by the principal. This involves an assessment of the conduct of the principal following the unauthorised action. Disputes can arise even with a carefully drafted agency agreement; for further information please contact David Collins or Kristy Nunn from our dispute resolution and litigation team

The Great Lakes Food Trail hosted a dinner to showcase the great food on offer in our region as well as speakers who gave informative talks on how they had achieved success on their farms and handy tips.
The theme of the night was 'So you want to live on a farm'.
The event dinner was held at the River Myall Resort with 85 people enjoying fabulous local food accompanied by matching wine and beer.
On arrival the guests were served canapes and were entertained by the Sydney Ensemble string quartet which was followed by a mouth watering three course meal.
Deputy President of the Great Lakes Food Trail, Dale Bradshaw told News Of The Area, “The aim of the event was to provide information to those thinking of moving to the country on how to get started on a farm and to showcase the great talent we have in our region.
“It’s a great way of showcasing our region as many of our visitors came from Newcastle and Sydney.”
The speakers covered the areas of more conventional farming on a larger scale like sheep, dairy and beef to more smaller scale intensive farming practices.
“It doesn't matter how big their farm or even if it’s a small block you can do something with it to produce food,” said Mr Bradshaw.
The event organisers would like to thank their principal sponsor Local Land Care Services, Big 4 Holiday Park and the Bulahdelah Chamber.
“A huge thank you to the team from Tillermans Restaurant and the Food Trail's own Chef Sarah and Nadine the Cake Queen, who put together a dinner to remember.
"Thank you to our guest speakers Andrew Smith, Brett Cooper, Andrew Yeo and Jesse Gollan who spoke on various topics of interest to potential new farmers.”

Peter Sinclair footpath on track for delivery in 2023
THIS week MidCoast Council advised the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association (HNTGPA) that the footpath linking the Peter Sinclair Gardens Seniors Home to the Hawks Nest shopping centre on Tuloa Avenue is on track for delivery this year.
The HNTGPA has been lobbying for this much needed footpath for many years to improve safe and inclusive access to shops and services for our community.
The new footpath will also support people using walkers and scooters, as well as bike riders and joggers of all ages.
Bruce Murray, President, welcomed the update, stating, “The Peter Sinclair footpath has been a clear community need for over ten years and the delays to date very frustrating for some.
“The HNTGPA continues to advocate for this and improved footpaths across our villages and this will be a good outcome for all.
“We have received written confirmation from Council that the works will commence this financial year.
“The Committee will continue to advocate to improve our village.
“This is a good start, however the HNTGPA is concerned that people using mobility scooters or walkers still need to use the roads in some places, which is unsafe.”
The Peter Sinclair footpath, and most other local footpath and access needs, were documented in the MidCoast Council Pedestrian Access and Management Plan (PAMP) in 2021.
The development of the PAMP included consultation with the community as well as input from local service and volunteer groups.
The PAMP outlines a number of local requirements including the following:
• Upgrade to the Singing Bridge (safer access and egress for pedestrians).
• Improved and safer access between
Winda Woppa and Hawks Nest.
• General lack of connecting cycle and footpaths across the villages (Myall

Hawks Nest - Tea Gardens Probus Club celebrates 35 years of activities
INITIALLY sponsored by the Rotary Club of RutherfordTelarah, the inaugural meeting to form the Hawks Nest-Tea Gardens Probus Club was held 35 years ago this February.
The club was founded on 15 February 1988.
The meeting was held at the Hawks Nest Golf Club, known back then as the ‘Tea Gardens - Hawks Nest Golf
Club’. The meeting was attended by sixteen men with Frank Fowler duly elected as President.
The foundation committee of five consisted of Keith Messenger (VP) Ron Singleton (Secretary), Bruce Oswald (Treasurer), Les Petersen (Social Director) and Mort Maiden (General Committee).
It was later discovered that some anomalies had existed in the election of officers and so a further meeting was convened on 28 March that year.
Fresh elections were held, resulting in the election of Randle Pritchard as the new President.
The original committee was retained with the addition of Alan White
elected as Programme Director.
Rotary President Mr Neville Davies represented the Rotary Club of Rutherford Telarah on both these occasions.
“Up until 2019, the club operated as a single gender club, however whilst the club’s constitution was silent on gender and its membership only open to men, wives and partners were always included in all its social functions and outings and they were also invited and made welcome to the monthly meetings despite having no voting rights,” said Ron Green, Hawks Nest - Tea

“Following the formation of a new mixed Probus Club in Hawks Nest in 2011, our club's membership numbers slowly declined from approximately 100 members to less than 60 over the next several years.
In late 2018 with the intention to address the declining numbers and after much discussion and deliberation, the HN-TG Probus Club began the transition to become a combined Probus Club in 2019.
Following a strong membership drive conducted in conjunction with the transition, membership grew rapidly to 113 members by the end of 2019.
However, when the COVID pandemic struck in early 2020, the club was

forced into recession until early 2021.
“Further disruptions and restrictions including social outings continued and as a result, the fallout that followed was that many of our newer members resigned without having experienced the real benefits of being part of Probus.
“Despite the club currently having just 50 active members, it still has a good base on which to build its membership in 2023 and most importantly the Probus philosophy of friendship, fellowship, and fun – still lives on in this immensely proud club,” Ron said.

Nominations open for Australia’s Heritage Lists
THE Federal Government is calling for public nominations to preserve sites of cultural and historic significance on the National Heritage List and on the Commonwealth Heritage List.
Nominations of a place with outstanding heritage values can be made by anyone.
The independent Australian Heritage Council will assess the values of the nominated place against
set criteria and make recommendations to the Minister for the Environment and Water.
There are currently 119 sites from across Australia included on the National Heritage List and close to 400 on the Commonwealth Heritage list.
These special places all contribute to Australia’s national identity.
The National Heritage List includes natural, historic and Indigenous places that
are of outstanding national heritage value to the nation.
Examples of places already on the National Heritage List range from built icons like the Melbourne Cricket Ground and Sydney Opera House to less well known but significant sites like the Moree Baths and Swimming Pool in regional NSW.
Natural sites include Bondi Beach in Sydney and Shark Bay in Western Australia, and Indigenous
sites include Wurrwurruy stone arrangements in the Northern Territory.
The Commonwealth Heritage List includes natural, historic and cultural heritage places across Commonwealth land and waters or owned or managed by the Commonwealth Government.
Examples of places on the Commonwealth Heritage List include historic lighthouses, post offices, courts and army barracks and bases.
“Australians know the value of our special places – natural places, built icons and Indigenous places,” said Minister for the Environment and Water, Tanya Plibersek.
“We visit them, we live near them and they help to shape our national identity.
“I encourage the public and local community groups to nominate the special places in their communities – we want to make sure the Heritage Lists reflect what Australians value.
PEP-11 offshore mining still a threat to the environment
By Marian SAMPSON
THE fate of our beautiful coastline and much of our tourism industry lies in the decision to approve or deny the PEP-11 mining licence off
the NSW coast.
The project was famously quashed by former Prime Minister Scott Morrison, but has since raised its head once more.
Tourism operators are
fearful that the project will disrupt the annual humpback whale migration which is a major visitor attraction in the region.
The NSW Liberal and Nationals Government have
announced they will legislate their existing policy to prevent offshore coal, gas, mineral and petroleum mining and exploration in NSW waters and have ramped up calls for the Albanese Government to prevent offshore mining in neighbouring Commonwealth waters.
Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin said that a re-elected NSW Liberal and Nationals Government will introduce a bill in the next session of Parliament.
“The NSW Liberal and Nationals Government has been consistently opposed to offshore mining due to the grave concerns we hold about the possible impact on the environment.
“We will always stand up for the environment and our communities that care deeply about our pristine coastline, and the federal
Labor Government must give the community certainty in their waters, as we will do in ours,” Mr Martin said.
The NSW Government’s existing Offshore Exploration and Mining Policy sets out the party’s approach to the development of the State’s geological resources.
“Today’s announcement cements our opposition to offshore gas exploration and mining, and these new laws will make it crystal clear to anyone looking to drill for gas in NSW waters that they need not apply,” Mr Martin said.
To help tackle beach erosion, the NSW Government will still consider offshore mineral exploration or mining in NSW waters for beach nourishment where a clear public benefit can be demonstrated.
Jordan Jensen, the Port Stephens candidate for the Greens in the NSW State
“Our heritage tells our story – it is a showcase of the unique environments, First Nations culture and our development as a nation.
“This is a chance for everyone to have a say in how the country showcases our outstanding heritage values and preserves the places that have helped shape our national identity.”
Nominations for both lists close on 19 April 2023.
To nominate a place visit www.dcceew.gov.au/parksheritage/heritage/about/ national/national-heritagelisting-process
Election, told News Of The Area that neither of the major parties can be trusted to protect our offshore waters from drilling.
“Those of us who live and work in Port Stephens know that gas exploration out from our coastline would be devastating for the marine environment and our tourism industry,” Mr Jensen said.
The Greens have concerns that the Liberal/ National State Government’s last-minute commitment to legislate to ban offshore exploration for gas may end up as yet another broken promise should they be reelected.
“Australians are realising, wow, this climate change thing is a problem and the liberal party doesn't prioritise it.
“The public wants urgent action on climate change and the coalition parties do not have an inspiring track record,” said Mr Jensen.

Commission campaign to tackle election disinformation
THE NSW Electoral Commission has launched its campaign to help reduce the spread of disinformation ahead of the NSW State election.
The Stop and Consider campaign is based on the campaign used by the Australian Electoral Commission for the 2022 Federal election.
This campaign is intended to provide voters with tools to identify disinformation when they come across it and direct them to more reliable
information sources.
NSW Electoral Commissioner John Schmidt said there was already a lot of information circulating about the upcoming State election on Saturday, 25 March.
“With so much information available to voters it can be hard to know what is true and what isn’t. I encourage all voters to stop and consider the information they are seeing and hearing.”
The NSW Electoral Commission is encouraging voters to think about three
things when they encounter electoral communications:
• Reliable: Is the information from a reliable source?
• Current: When was it published?
• Safe: Could it be a scam?
Mr Schmidt said false information about elections circulating in the community and online could undermine confidence in the integrity of democratic processes.
“The campaign aims to maintain public confidence in, and understanding of, the electoral process and election outcome.
Stay safe around buses
BUS Safety Week ran from Monday 20 February to Sunday 26 February to raise awareness on how to stay safe on and around buses.
Preliminary statistics from 2017 to 2021 show 298 people were seriously injured in crashes involving buses or mini buses and 30 people lost their lives.
37 percent of all bus passengers injured were children aged five to sixteen years.
“Buses play an important role in our community, especially in helping children get to and from school,” said MidCoast Council’s Road Safety Officer, Chris Dimarco.
Parents and carers should always meet children at school or at the bus stop.
Don’t wait on the opposite side of the road.
Hold your child’s hand when walking to and from the bus stop or crossing the road, and wait for the bus to
go before crossing. Teach your child to quickly find a seat on the bus and put on a seatbelt if available.
You can find resources to help teach your children bus safety at https://roadsafety. transport.nsw.gov.au/ downloads/bus-safetyschool-students.pdf
With pedestrians accounting for most bus fatalities, it’s important we all adopt some simple habits.

A big plus for the Hawks is the acquisition

Redman, a former Newcastle Knights and Gold Coast Titans hooker, takes over the coaching reins after playing for the Cessnock Goannas in the Newcastle Rugby League competition.
The club boasts a fine crop of young talent that includes powerful prop Jyson Wolfram, back rower Braith Cotterill, dashing fullback Ben Woolard,

The NSW Electoral Commission has launched a disinformation register which rebuts prominent false and misleading statements about electoral processes in NSW.

Don't rush for the bus, obey traffic signals, don’t get distracted, stand back from the kerb and wait until the bus has gone before crossing the road.

Dress Circle Location
4 bedrooms/2 bathrooms/2 garage/720 sqm
WAKE up and look out your window to the Myall River and check the weather.
Step into your walking shoes and head off for a morning stroll along the riverfront.
A ten minute leisurely stroll to your favourite cafe for your morning coffee - or indulge in a full breakfast overlooking the waterway.
If you are up for more of a workout, head across the bridge into Hawks Nest for a swim at the stunning Bennett’s Beach and reward yourself on the return walk.
This small and exclusive enclave known as Port Stephens St/Sanctuary Close in Tea Gardens is regarded as a dress circle location.
This small exclusive cul-de-sac is the location for some of the areas more upmarket properties.
Located at the northern end of the riverfront promenade, it affords all residents easy walking access to the main attractions of Tea Gardens.
You are only a few hundred metres away from hopping on the ferry to Nelson Bay to enjoy a day out on the other side of Port Stephens; or close enough to indulge in dinner and a few drinks at one of the restaurants along Marine Drive with just a short walk to get back home.
Homes in this cul-de-sac are tightly held and rarely come to market.
This is a quality home where nothing has been left out.
This home is stylishly presented, with neutral wall colours, immaculate flooring being a combination of quality tiles and
carpet; and luscious outdoor spaces front and back.
There is a great flow to the home, from the formal entry where we find the more formal living spaces continuing through to the expansive informal living space with gorgeous
kitchen and access to the rear al fresco dining area surrounded by beautifully landscaped and manicured gardens.
The informal living area features built in custom cabinetry and shelving, window seats with storage and an entertainment unit.
The windows feature plantation shutters adding a special touch to this room.
The rear garden is fully fenced with the landscaping that includes a meandering path through natives, shrubs and trees providing shade and privacy.
Sitting here you will de-stress, surrounded by low maintenance plants, and clever use of garden features that draw the eye; while a delightful water feature enhances the sense of location next to the waterway. There is an irrigation system in place that makes gardening even easier.
The al fresco dining area is north facing, is located off the living area, and boasts a servery
from the kitchen.
The space is covered by an electric Vergola to control the amount of light and shut out any inclement weather.
This space can also be screened off as required.
There are three to four bedrooms depending on your needs.
The Master bedroom is located on the Myall River side with some water views.
This is an expansive space with a picture window for plenty of light, and an en-suite bathroom as well as a spacious walk-in wardrobe.
In a separate 'wing' there are two further bedrooms, one with a built-in wardrobe. Both accommodate queen size beds. This is also where we find the family bathroom, which comes with a shower and a corner bathtub, as well as another vanity and
toilet - ideal for those with small children.
Additionally, there is a study with library shelving that could be used as a fourth bedroom if required.
Finally we have the double garage with internal entry, a storage space/workshop area and a drive through to the back - an attractive feature for those moving to the area with boats and/or caravan.
There are loads of extras; from a fully fenced back garden, solar power and hot water, curtains, insect screens throughout, ducted air conditioning with a new system (approximately twelve months old), skylights and lots of storage.
This is an awesome combination of a quality home in a dress-circle location.

The Write Direction

THE most frustrating communication tool we have is our TV set.
It should be a simple exercise of just switching it on for the news or the entertainment we need.
Would you like to watch tennis, football or any other world class sporting event or even the local evening TV news?
Of course you would, but now things start to go wrong.
The picture breaks up, it pixelates, your set says the TV is not tuned properly, check the antenna connection…
If it could think of another reason why your picture has evolved into panic mode, I’m sure it would.
Some blame the NBN, others blame the wind which could sway the antenna, maybe there is a storm between us and Newcastle and others might say it’s your TV set which could need to be upgraded or re-programmed.
Having worked my way through all these issues and found that none of them apply to my TV sets, I guess I just become frustrated and cannot do anything practical to restore stable viewing.
Eventually quality viewing is restored automatically so we let go of the issue rather than try to sort it out.
I now have a list of other TV viewers in our approximate area, living in nearby locations up to 25 kilometers away from home and they report the same pixelating picture syndrome when I telephone them to say my TV reception is at it again, so how is yours doing?
In every instance they report the same issue and say how frustrating and incurable the issue has become.
So, whose fault is it?
My view is that the issue is located at the transmission tower where our pictures are delivered from.
My guess is that there is lack of maintenance at this location which results in transmission interruption or failure.
The fact that the picture quality suddenly reverts to normal means that the issue at transmission is seen and resolved at the end.
Isn’t it interesting that the advertisements usually transmit without issue but the plot in the movie is lost whilst the pixelation takes over.
So, what can we do about it?
I’m amazed that in our general location with a majority of retired folk who have the time and need for reliable TV broadcasts, are not operating in revolt mode, are not writing letters to politicians or driving the TV repair guys to distraction over this continuing picture failure.
Maybe they are but still nothing is happening to resolve the problem.
This is an issue that detracts from our way of life and in a first world country with skilled communication professionals, why is this happening?
At present we have a first world service that is operating in a third world fashion.
The media giants need to be put on notice that the public’s acceptance of poor reception is wearing thin and they need to do something about it.
Free TV is a great concept but needs to work efficiently where content is good, but delivery performance is very poor.

DEAR Jasminda,
I recently made a delicious tuna slice for our church group and everyone loved it, but I later discovered I'd used the cat's tuna instead of tuna for human consumption.
Should I tell them?

HAWKS Nest Golf Club Lady Veterans Golf Competition for 23 February 2023
Penny G.
OH, Penny. If you hadn't mentioned that you'd made it for your church group, I would have said, let bygones be bygones, which is the sort of vague, encouraging advice you will find in the bible interspersed with the somewhat less encouraging descriptions of war, human sacrifice, and murder.
In the scheme of things, I'd say tuna slice made with pet food is relatively harmless. Interestingly, upmarket pet food often costs more than food for human consumption and looks so delectable, that it's no wonder you made this error.
I'd only start worrying if, next time you go to church, your friends greet you by coughing up a hair ball before rubbing themselves against your leg then biting your ankle, or, alternatively, they bring dead mice to the parish door and use the pews as scratching posts.
To safeguard against this error in the future, store your cat's tinned food in a separate location. Maybe make something less fraught next timescones, for example.
Carpe diem, Jasminda.

25 FEBRUARY
Constant drizzle last Wednesday put paid to any play in the usual Wednesday gala day.
However, the first ever open gender Pennants commenced today in brilliant sunshine with a stiff North-easterly breeze making conditions difficult.
The First National Sponsored Grade 5 team played away at Merewether and gave a great account of themselves losing the match by just one shot 54-55.
One key Dolphins Grade 5 player, Cody Ross, unfortunately suffered an industrial accident during the week and was seriously injured.
Cody, you have 100 mates back
at the Club pulling for you and in your corner right now.
Get well soon!
The Grade 6 Dolphins managed a nail-biting win against arch nemesis Raymond Terrace at home, winning the Master Board 62-60.
Not so lucky was the Grade 7 side who, although leading early in the match, were eventually overtaken by the Beresfield machine and soundly beaten 46-81.
It is interesting to note that none of the female players have been graded and many have found their way into grade 7 giving some an enormous advantage.
I know as the season progresses smaller clubs will experience much more of this, and lesser teams will have to lift their game or be in for a
26 February Fine and hot conditions continued today for the semi-final round of the Club Championship Minor Pairs.
After their resounding win last week, the team of Stephen Mount and Anthony Grant probably started as favourites today in their match against John Moore and Roman Bondaruk.
John and Roman proved the pundits wrong with a sound display of consistent bowls, winning an entertaining game and booking a finals berth 22-15.
In the remaining game, it would be fair to say that Tony Butler and Rick Islaub were slow out of the blocks and with only 7 or so ends remaining it was going to take something of a miracle for them to recover a 2-15 deficit to win their
The Competition runs for four days with the Final to be held on Friday 3 March at Tea Gardens Country Club and Motel, hopefully one or both of our teams makes it through to the Final. Spectators are welcome to see some great bowling. match against Wayne Duggan and Hylton Newman.
But they did.
Steady increments and a long end on the 20th which gave Tony and Rick a 5 to see them take the lead for the first time in the match and give them a two-shot buffer with one end to play.
The last end was a nervous untidy affair, but Tony and Rick held their nerve winning by just one shot 18-17.
It is hard to pick a winner for next Sunday’s final.
Certainly, John Morre and Roman Bondaruk have more experience but Rick and Tony can play a lot better than today so it should be a great game.
In next week's Pennant round Grade 5 play Karuah at home, Grade 6 play New Lambton away and Grade 7 travel to Hexham.

Aerial spraying (using drones) of Bitou Bush on beaches
MidCoast Council will be carrying out aerial herbicide spraying at various locations along our coastal strip, for the control of Bitou Bush. Scheduled works will occur intermittently during the month of March until early April and recommencing early May until June, weather permitting.
This activity is undertaken as a part of a broader, collaborative and coordinated program with other public authorities and land management agencies on the Mid North Coast of NSW.
Council’s contractors, experienced in aerial spraying using drones, will be following recommendations contained within the “best practice guidelines for aerial spraying of Bitou Bush in New South Wales”, as published by The Department of Environment and Conservation, Natural Heritage Trust and National Parks and Wildlife Service.
Two herbicides will be used within different areas determined by site specific requirements.
Lynx WG (Metsulfuron methyl 600g/Kg) will be applied at 20 – 30g/ha or Macspred Glymac 360 (Glyphosate 360g/L) will be applied at 2 L/ha. These herbicides will be applied, as per requirements of APVMA off label permit 12251 for the control of Bitou Bush in coastal sand dunes, bushland and grass land.
The following areas may be temporarily closed to public access for the duration of the spraying or from 7am until 5pm on the specific treatment days:
• Crowdy Beach
• Crowdy Head Reserve (Harrington Beach)
• Manning Point Beach
• Sandbar / Cellito Beach at Pacific Palms
• Bennetts Beach, Yacabba Peninsular, Jimmys Beach and Winda Woppa at Hawks Nest
Contact MidCoast Council for further information.

WEDNESDAY THE SWAP
SBS, 8.30pm
SUNDAY VERA
ABC, 8.30pm
Devoted fans of this long-running drama can breathe a sigh of relief – no-nonsense sleuth DCI Vera Stanhope (Brenda Blethyn) will return for at least one more instalment after this latest four-episode run wraps up next week. Rest assured, Vera isn’t hanging up her iconic green mac and fisherman hat just yet. In tonight’s penultimate episode of season 12, simply titled “Blue”, Vera gets her teeth stuck into another baffling mystery when a second-generation police officer is found dead floating in a park lake. The unorthodox but perceptive crime-solver treads carefully on both sides of the thin blue line as she bids to uncover the truth.

This first-of-its-kind social experiment is set to shake up the country’s cultural divide, break down social barriers and boost acceptancea – all by giving 12 very different Brisbane students and their families the chance to swap schools for a term. Ali Kadri, CEO of the Islamic College of Brisbane, is behind the exchange, which sees six Muslim families, four Catholic families and two atheist families take a leap of faith that will test their preconceptions of each others’ lives. The results are eye-opening, and at times challenging, but there’s no doubt the students, their families – and viewers – will be changed for the better.
