BOOMERANG Bags are back in business after months of pause due to COVID-19. Julie Sims, Coordinator at Boomerang Bags Hawks Nest Tea Gardens, said that group members have still been hard at work crafting their usual bags – in addition to masks. “We haven’t been able to have a sewing bee for five months, but in that time, our volunteers have still been hard at it creating from home.” The group hasn’t been able to attend markets since March 2020, but have recently been able to restart selling bags and masks again on the second Saturday of every month at Tea Gardens Hotel. “Our first one back was

The group originally sourced their materials from local op shops but has since received generous donations from the community. “It’s amazing how much beautiful fabric people have stored in their cupboards,” Ms Sims said. “We even had a wedding dress donated – the lace made lovely produce bags.” The group has had an active role in helping
to reduce single-use plastics in the local communities, including eliminating plastic bags at meat raffles and launching a buyback scheme to remove plastic straws from cafes. “Once we started having the conversation within our community about how to reduce plastic usage so many people got on board,” said Ms Sims. “It’s with this community support that I hope we can achieve a plastic-free future.”

$4,400 won on 26 July 2020 FROM Page 1 up to ten koalas on a stretch of highway in Nerong in the past year. Group members say that the koala deaths began when a two metre high fence was erected on a local landowners property in September 2019. The property in question runs along the Pacific Highway and neighbours The Island Action Sports Centre. “The fence was finished in September and in November we had our first confirmed koala kill, north of the fence on the highway. A week later there was another one, directly above the wildlife underpass on the highway,” said Ian Morphett, group secretary. “One of our members has personally witnessed five dead koalas, with reports of another four to six dead, the latest being on August 17.” Mr Morphett says the fence blocks koalas from travelling safely between National Park areas either side of the highway. “Koalas need movement corridors to move from one place to another. It so happens that where the landowners property is located, there is also National Park on both sides of the highway. “The probability is that these koalas used to be able to feed on the landowners property, and as they are now unable to get across there they go across the highway to get to the other side, hence we are seeing a big increase in koala fatalities in this
location.” Mr Morphett said that MidCoastCouncil, NSW Threatened Species and the National Parks and Wildlife Service had been notified of the situation but no action had been taken. “National Parks and Council have both washed their hands of it, which obviously we are not very pleased with,” he said.
Member for Port Stephens, Kate Washington MP, told News Of The Area the situation was “very, very troubling.” “Quite frankly, I’m horrified by what residents have shared with me, with one even describing it as a ‘massacre’.

“The land involved is a natural corridor between the Nerong State Forest and the Myall River National Park. “Remarkably, koalas still travel between the two conservation areas, either under or across the Pacific Highway. “However, the koala carnage only started after a new fence was erected on the property,” she said. Ms Washington said that urgent action was required to avoid a localised koala extinction. “Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest koalas are officially listed as ‘endangered’. Given the drought, bushfires and increased predation, we know that the local koala population is now in critical decline. “To lose at least ten koalas on a short stretch of the highway in such a short space of time, means a localised extinction is looming.”

If you are running a company, there is a need to hold an AGM. Due to lockdown restrictions/ social distancing measures under COVID-19 sometimes face to face meetings are not possible. CWA Mask Fundraiser By Marian SAMPSON
Bushfire risk greater By Geoff WALKER The release of the report of the inquiry into the NSW bushfires will make it even harder to get the fire fuel burnt off, according to longtime local fireman Richard Osborne. “The government has adopted the 76 recommendations in the 466 page document but these are a complex web of different requirements to pander to particular interest groups. This will mean
more regulations and mountains of paperwork. It will put an extra burden on the local volunteers,” he said. Mr Osborne said extra regulations would make staff retention more difficult. “The training regimes at the moment consume so much of the volunteers' time that any more requirements will mean that it will be hard to retain new recruits. Experienced firies will be walking away from the RFS,” he added. “There were 1967 submissions to the inquiry and 650 of them stated that the failure to burn off the
COVID-19 has hit many fundraising activities hard but the CWA have pivoted to meet a new need. The need to wear face masks has seen many organisations and families crank up their sewing machines to create suitable attire to prevent the spread of COVID-19. A group of industrious Country Women’s Association (CWA) ladies from the Gloucester branch saw a need to supply face masks to help in the battle against COVID transmission in our local community.
fuel was responsible for the unfightable firestorms. This was the highest type of response received,” he added. Mr Osborne is now calling for real action to result from the inquiry. “Local residents just want burnoffs to happen, and they won't because it will be just too hard to do,” he said. “Every time there are big fires we get inquiries but nothing gets done. This time is no different. We also have a Royal Commission into the fires running at the moment but out in the bush the fuel levels are growing all the time. Come summer, it will all happen again because burnoffs haven't reduced the fire fuel during the winter,” he said.
q Richard Osborne OAM receiving his RFS Life Membership Award.
Anne Williamson of the Gloucester CWA told News Of The Area, “Around 12 of the Gloucester CWA branch members put their sewing and support skills to work using fabrics and accessories from members’ own supplies to make a colourful range of threelayer fabric masks. “The CWA hall was transformed into a sociallydistanced production line for cutting fabrics, pinning and sewing the 3-layer masks, threading elastic and pipe cleaners, ironing, bagging, labelling and selling to the public.” Initially the CWA ladies
planned to make around 50 masks for family and friends but after being inundated with orders, the group has made over 300 masks for the local community and they have posted orders as far as Queensland. “All the proceeds from the sale of the masks support the local community through local CWA activities and support the NSW CWA Disaster Relief fund. This has helped thousands of families across the state during the recent drought and bushfires,” she said. Masks can be ordered
by sending a message on our CWA Gloucester Branch Facebook page or keep a look out on the Facebook page for the dates on which masks will be sold from the CWA hall. The mask-making activity has been a welcome chance for members to reconnect with each other after several months of only being able to phone and email each other due to COVID restrictions. The regular CWA meeting, which takes place every second Tuesday of the month at 10am in the CWA hall, also recommenced last month with strict safety measures in place. All prospective members are very welcome and can contact Gloucester CWA via Facebook Page or through the Secretary on 0408 146 753.
Aged care restrictions essential
q 3-year-old Logan Lyne, visiting his great grandmother through the glass during restrictions
By Ashley CHRYSLER AS the region with the oldest average population in the State, Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens are naturally home to several retirement villages and aged care facilities. With the continued prevalence of COVID-19, local villages and facilities have had to institute rigid restrictions to preserve the health and safety of its residents. Allyson Gregory, manager of residential aged care facility Peter Sinclair Gardens, shared with News Of The Area some of the precautions they’ve put in place. “We’re in stage two which means visitors are now allowed back into our facility for up to two hours by appointment, to a maximum
of two residents per day, for room visits only,” said Ms Gregory. “All staff wear masks when interacting with residents, and social distancing and handwashing is practised.” “Residents can leave the facility, but only for medical appointments or in special compassionate cases.” Ms Gregory said that stages and restrictions are determined by their Risk Management Team, and based on a number of factors, including positive COVID-19 cases within 100 kilometre range in the last fortnight. In the case of an approved exemption, visitors must also pass a number of requirements,
such as undertaking a temperature check and a health declaration, be vaccinated for influenza, and having not visited a hot spot in the last 14 days. “Our primary objective is to keep our most vulnerable elderly safe whilst ensuring they are still able to maintain contact with family and live fulfilling lives,” said Ms Gregory. The facility helps facilitate Zoom meetings, and organises front door visits safely through the glass for families. A resident at Peter Sinclair who preferred to remain nameless, said that while the restrictions are quite limiting, she understands and appreciates why they are in place. “It’s frustrating but I’d rather be ‘locked down’ than catch the virus,” she said.
Look after your health. Continue medical appointments. It's more important than ever to keep your usual medical and mental health appointments, as well as taking any regular medication. And if you need to go to the hospital, don’t hesitate. It is completely safe to do so. Your health is important. And as always, if you develop any COVID-19 symptoms such as fever, cough, sore/scratchy throat, shortness of breath, loss of smell or loss of taste, get tested straight away.

Ray Keipert releases anthology of stories By Lyn CHAIKIN RAY Keipert, a member of the Myall U3A Writers' group, has just released his first book, an anthology of 20 short stories titled 'Life's Winners... and a Few Losers.' Some of his intriguing tales of fiction are based in our area, although the majority are located elsewhere throughout Australia or in various overseas countries.
What is the theme? We see ordinary people, cast into difficult and sometimes life-threatening circumstances, or maybe faced with an unexpected challenge. In certain cases, it may be more in their own imagination than real. But a challenge nevertheless. Where do they find the courage to succeed? A war hero's secret life, giving away a million
pounds, forgiveness for a sudden death, dodging submachine-gun fire. All this and more to be revealed. Along the road we meet a few villains and those with unworthy motives, who turn inwards to meet their own selfish needs. Even here, we occasionally see one regretting past actions and changing their ways, a prelude to achieving something worthwhile.
MYALL COASTNews Of The Area How good is that! So welcome to this edition of 'Life's Winners... and a Few Losers.' Ray hopes that you will find it inspiring. Priced at $19.99, please email him on Lrkeipert@ dodo.com.au or phone him on 4997 2356 to obtain your copy. And wait, there's more: in October, Myall U3A Writers will be releasing their own book, 'Write by the River' featuring stories and poems on the Myall by a number of members. Stunning garden in full swing
Harry Anstey in his garden
85-year old Harry Anstey has had a passion for gardening for as long as he can remember.
By Ashley CHRYSLER
85-YEAR OLD Harry Anstey has had a passion for gardening for as long as he can remember. Even at the age of three, he would nurture a strawberry patch with his sister and compete to see who could grow the most berries. “I’ve always loved gardening,” said Mr Anstey. “When I was living on the Gold Coast and in Bowral, I used to have such big and beautiful gardens – we would even open them up for
charity events to be held in.” Mr Anstey attended Gatton Agricultural College on a scholarship, moving on to work for British Airways and managing clubs, while continuing to work on his craft recreationally. “We get a lot of people walking past and commenting on it,” said Mr Anstey. “A couple even dropped off some wine once, saying ‘we enjoy your garden so much so here, enjoy this’.” Mr Anstey had open heart surgery several years
which includes inspecting of hollows and cavities to relocate any fauna, and close inspection during the removal process for displaced fauna,” explained Mr Aldridge. “All useful hollows, branches and deadwood will be lowered from the trees and relocated to protected areas within the
site.” Woodchip generated from the removal will be used onsite, and Council has approached the Stroud Men’s Shed who will seek to use timber from the trees to repurpose for construction uses, such as seating and tables. Council has also engaged a contractor to

violence and that we all have a role to play in prevention. Whether you run, walk or roll, everyone is welcome. You don’t have to run too far to be a part of the movement either. If you have ten people in your team, each member will need to average 6-7km per day to complete the Challenge. A team of 20 members equates to 3-4km per day per person. You don’t need to build your own team, you can join one during the registration process. There are several Port Stephens based teams already registered, jump on line and join in.
Run Against Violence Is Back By Marian SAMPSON
RUN against violence is taking off for the third time and there are already teams of runners from the Bay lining up to complete the 1300 km run to raise awareness around domestic violence. Run Against Violence is a volunteer-based, member association established to use running and other sporting activities as a conduit for engaging the broader community in family violence prevention. Kirrily Dear, founder of the Run Against Violence, told News Of The Area, “This will be the third virtual challenge, I did the Broken Hill to Sydney

Aboriginal issues and making sure local people were accessing the support they required and were entitled to. Diane said her experiences growing up infomed her later choice of career. “You grow from childhood and you see the struggles. I was always passionate about being a voice, where sometimes our mob doesn't have that voice,” said Diane. “I was living and breathing it. The experience of being homeless, going through the struggles, I have been through the things that our mob faces.” Diane said that often Aboriginal people weren't aware of the support available to them, or had difficulty

Tuesday 25th August: Social bowls five games of three bowls. Triples 18 ends. A massive win for Sue Morris ("swinger" lead), Robyn Beaumont and Dale Winter 33 v Sue, Christine Fossey and Loretta Baker 5. An interesting contest on the next Rink Jean Glover, Dot Dallas and Karen McPhie leading by 8 on the 7th end, on the 12th end losing by 5, finally snatching victory on the last 2 ends
(scoring 7) against Bette Saillard, Dorothy Thompson and Kayelene Pearson, the final score 25 v 19. Ingrid Luck, Sheila Rattray and Lynda Richards led from start to finish against Leona Clissold, Carol Hayden and Deyonne Page winning 23 v 8. A close game on Rink 11 Wendy Jones, Jill McBride and Lorraine Murphy v Jan Coomer, Bev Stephens and Judy McGavock. A tie 9 all on the 10th end, then Lorraine's team gaining a 7 shot lead over
the next 2 ends, 16 v 9. Unfortunately Lorraine's ladies didn't add to their tally over the next 5 ends, finally losing 18 v 21. It took 3 ends for Dawn Jones, Bev Rhodes and Maynie Roberts to put points on the board but from then on they never looked back winning 22 v 13. Their opponents were Sheril Johnson, Judi Polak and Robyn Webster. Winners on the day winning with the lowest score were Jan, Bev and Judy.

COVID-19 has made life more difficult for many people in the local area, and has highlighted the need for community members to have effective access to key services and community resources. Diane Ball, the executive director of the Raymond Terrace-based Wahroonga Aboriginal Corporation, has been connecting local Indigenous families and individuals to the services and programs they need during the pandemic. Since starting her corporation in 1994, Diane has worked tirelessly, and unpaid, advocating for local
q
and support our Indigenous people to better help their lifestyle. For example, I make sure people have access and knowledge of our local Aboriginal health services,”
Diane Ball loves her work in the community.
she said. Diane also liaises with Government departments to ensure programs are inclusive and accessible to Aboriginal people. “When I go into consultations with Government or community agencies, I speak about the programs and some of the barriers for people who don’t fit within the guidelines,” she said. “I always come across barriers for Indigenous people, programs sometimes don't cater for someone's individual needs, then when they get this funding from the government, there are still barriers to accessing it. It's like a revolving door. Then your're back to square one.” During COVID-19, the need for Diane’s role has been even greater. “I hear a lot of people locally not being able to access services during COVID
19, so I stay in contact with community members, see how they are going.” Diane says that a onesize-fits-all approach simply does not work with Aboriginal communities, and said that building trust was an important first step. “When you look at it you have your urban communities, and on the flip side when you go to reserves or missions, they are like a community on their own. “Basically if they don’t know you they won't voice their concerns. It's about going out, introducing yourself, having a yarn. It does take time to build that trust.” While her work is all done on a volunteer basis, Diane says she finds her role rewarding. “Yeah I don’t get paid, but when I put a smile on an individual or families face, that’s all the payment I need.”
Glover and Kathie Rimmer 7. Wilma Drake and Kayelene Pearson proved to be too strong for Judi Polak and Jeanette Emmett winning by 13 shots, 22 v 9. The Triples proved to be a very evenly matched contest winner here Sheril Johnson, Dorothy Thompson and Dale Winter 12 v Sue Morris, Bev Rhodes and Lorraine Murphy 10. Jill McBride and Maynie Roberts won the first end of their game v Marie Reinhard and Robyn Beaumont but
remained scoreless for the next 7 ends final result a win to Marie and Robyn 12 v 5. On the 5th end there was only one shot the difference in the score Ingrid Luck and Loretta Baker v Bev Dunn and Judy McGavock from then on the game belonged to Ingrid and Loretta winning 14 v For those bowlers interested in entering Versatility Competition, Club Championship Triples and RSL Pairs lists for these events are on the board at the Club.

Hawks Nest Bridge Club News and Results By Esther DIGBY HAWKS Nest Bridge Club continues to develop and improve the range of opportunities to play bridge in these restricted coronavirus times. Our Club tournaments on Bridge Base Online have moved forward with the first online Red Points event which was held on 21 August. This is in addition to the normal online Club games

I WAS recently diagnosed with mesothelioma, which is an insidious cancer that can sit dormant for decades. It usually occurs in people who have worked with asbestos or other high dust producing building materials. After having my first immunotherapy/ chemotherapy treatment on Monday and while sitting around with a drip in my arm for 3.5 hours I started to think about all the people around me who seemed to be doing it a lot tougher than me, some being pregnant women who could potentially lose their babies or die before holding them. I started to think about young kids with cancer who have never had a chance at life and in this COVID19 world are separated from the world more than ever before. By chance I saw a post on Facebook

EARLIER this month our local paper reported that Federal funds were being injected to improve our local Tea Gardens pool. I swim laps a few times per week when the Tea Gardens pool is open for the season and I have recently contacted the Council to confirm a reopening date (usually it is in September). I cannot tell you how disappointed I was
to read the Council's reply to me today - they are not reopening the pool to the general public and use COVID as an excuse. So many pools in our state are open and have been for some time now for their local communities. Local residents may find this news upsetting. Barbara Janczak.

10 MYALL COAST NEWS OF THE AREA
We are having a week without social media with our kids. How should we entertain ourselves? Mrs Karen B. Dear Karen, I can totally understand you wanting a break from social media, and with the hard time Karens of Australia have had lately, a break makes a lot of sense. Hopefully by the time you return, Bunnings Karen will have been replaced with BCF David or Kmart Kellie and you can put away those namechange documents you've been toying with. The thing is, many of us are old enough to remember LBI, and by that I don't mean Long Beach Island or Lower Back Injury or Leveraged Buy In, but Life Before Internet. It was a time when we practiced mindfulness all the time. It was called 'Mum's locked me out of the house again'. We sniffed salty air instead of multi-level-marketing oil blends and we took the occasional dodgy photo rather than having our lives constantly compared to everyone with an ego, a library of filters and twenty different pouts. It was accepted that we could quite happily exist without needing to be stimulated ever 20 seconds. Entertainment consisted of making mixed tapes and the Paddlepop Lick-a-Prize which no one ever won but we did eat our body weight in Paddle Pops every summer. We've lost sight of each other because we are too busy scrolling, and not only are we ending up with dodgy eyes and dodgy necks, but we're seeing a whole lot of stuff that we probably could survive, and survive well, without. As an experiment, here are a few moments of my social media feed for your entertainment. From the top: Sam Newman is irresponsible. Now I have to find out why. Arrgh, he's suggesting a protest. Now I'm thinking about protests. Hang on, my friend is having a birthday, which I wouldn't have known about but for social media; now I have to find the appropriate GIF and so I am scrolling through cats wearing birthday hats, chubby babies dancing, fireworks, my brain is exploding. Ah, that's better, a seaside post rolling waves. No, it's a travel memory and I've remembered the borders are closed and I'm feeling despondent. Hang on, there's a local fundraiser for a child I don't know with a disease I've never heard of. Now I am Googling the disease and getting out my credit card which is already seriously depleted due to previous donations to rehomed horses and koalas . . . but wait . . . a German hacker has turned sausages into a working piano. Oh wow. Did you know it is Clancy the Labrador's birthday? I don't know Clancy; he lives in Florida (nice to know Clancy's still kicking when over 11,000 people have lost their lives there due to Covid-19 - it's great dogs can't get it . . . can they?). Did I need to know any of that stuff? No. Could I have coped better without it. Probably. So, Karen, I commend you on your social media hiatus and I think if you and your family just head outside, your brains and bodies will thank you. In fact, I'm going to stop typing and do the same just as soon as I look at this video of a blind cat that can play chopsticks after its owner transformed the piano keys with braille made out repurposed milk bottle lids. Oh, it's adorable. You should . . . No, don't do it, Karen. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

North Arm Cove is less than 20 minutes to Tea Gardens shops & restaurants and Hawks Nest & our beaches. Under 2 hours on the M1 (at Wahroonga), this is a great getaway.
