Karuah ANZAC services unite community
By Thomas O’KEEFE
TRADITIONS were heartily observed by hundreds at the ANZAC Dawn and Morning services at Karuah on Tuesday, 25 April.
Into the foggy sunrise there emerged a large crowd of more than 500 people, a larger crowd than usual, uniting to observe one of the most time-honoured and reverent events on the Australian calendar.
As the morning cleared into a great day, commemorators joined the march from Tony King Automotive down to the ANZAC War Memorial, overlooking the Karuah River.
The marchers, which included a contingent from local Royal Australian Air Force veterans, were treated to ceremonial songs upon the bagpipes, specially chartered for this year’s services.
“Despite the holiday, the Karuah Primary School was well represented,” local resident Marion Brown informed NOTA.
The Service featured the traditional Hymns, National Anthem, prayers and wreathlaying, with bugle soundings of the Last Post and The Rouse.
“The Karuah Dawn Service holds a special place in my heart, and every year, more people come – it looked like the entire town turned out this year,” special guest Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington told NOTA.
"I was humbled to have the opportunity this year to share
my reflections on ANZAC Day, and the unimaginable sacrifice paid by too many.”
Chris Fraser, President of the Karuah RSL, told News Of The Area, “The RSL served breakfast from 7am, free for all who attended, and put on by the Directors of the RSL, as a way to give back to the community.
“It was a fantastic day had by all, and we were proud to host everyone at the RSL afterwards,” Mr Fraser added.
The RSL successfully held TwoUp on the premises, which would have come as somewhat of a relief for many in town, given the controversy of last year’s cancellation.
With the brakes applied by the COVID pandemic before that, this was the first time in three years that the Karuah RSL had hosted Two-Up on ANZAC Day.

Nominate a young person for a Youth Award
NOMINATIONS for the 2023 Youth Awards are open, with MidCoast residents encouraged to nominate a young person before Sunday 25 June.
“There are many young people making a positive contribution to the MidCoast community,” said Manager Libraries and Community Services, Alex Mills.
“MidCoast Youth Awards give us an opportunity to recognise these young people and acknowledge the contribution of our young leaders in the community.”
The award includes a certificate, $250 prize, and recognition that can help underpin future career ambitions.
Open to anyone aged 12-24 living, working or studying in the MidCoast local government area, the awards recognise achievements in the arts, community service, leadership, sports, wellbeing and resilience, and entrepreneurship.

planned outages, most of which will last an entire working day (or two, depending on exact address), from 8:30am to 4:30pm.
As a precaution, all affected businesses and individuals should be aware and prepared for having no electricity during this timeframe.
“The major works see more than 90 tasks completed across the area over six consecutive days,” Mat Reedy, Operations Manager Mid North Coast, told News Of The Area.
“Crews will be working on and replacing numerous power poles and sections of power lines, upgrading supporting equipment, along with general maintenance on the overhead electricity network,” Mr Reedy added.
With plans to bring in crews from Port Macquarie, Dungog, Stroud and Gloucester, Essential Energy appears quite keen to have the work done well within the weeklong timeframe.
The company builds, operates and maintains one of the country’s largest electricity distribution networks, with more than 880,000 regional, rural and remote customers in NSW and southern Queensland.
“Significant planning has been undertaken to complete the large program of works as quickly and safely as possible, with a significant amount of work being completed in a relatively short time across the area, to reduce the overall inconvenience on affected communities,” Mr Reedy told NOTA.
“We appreciate that planned power outages may cause inconvenience for some customers, but they are vital to
ensure a safe and reliable power network for these communities.”
More detailed information, including a map of the outages, can be found on the
Essential Energy website at https://www. essentialenergy.com.au/outages-andfaults/power-outages.
The entrepreneurship award is open to young people aged 18-24.
The MidCoast Youth Awards is a partnership between Taree PCYC and MidCoast Council, LJ Hooker Taree, and Grow A Star.
“The support of the PCYC, LJ Hooker Taree and Grow A Star makes these awards possible, along with the sponsorship of several local businesses,” added Mr Mills.
Each category is sponsored by a local service, group or organisation, including: MidCoast Council (Sports); LJ Hooker Taree (entrepreneurship); Grow A Star (Wellbeing and Resilience); Rotary (Leadership); Friends of the Manning Regional Art Gallery (the arts).
Anyone can nominate a young person for a youth award. Nominations are assessed by a panel with a short list of nominees invited to the awards ceremony in September where the winners will be announced.

Caring for an Elderly parent
by Cavelle Lindsay
We are seeing more children caring for their elderly parent(s) in the home of the elderly parent(s).
There are several aged care fees that may be relevant in these circumstances. Some of the most common fees are as follows:
• Home care package fees: If your elderly parent is eligible for a Home care package, they will be given a certain amount of funding to cover the cost of services and support provided in their own home. Care recipients are not income and assets tested.
This means Centrelink will pay the following:
• the maximum basic daily fee;
• the maximum (means tested) care fee; and
• accommodation costs subject to annual and lifetime caps.
If your elderly parent receives an income support payment, they do not have to complete an assessment.
Carer Allowance: As a child carer of your elderly parent, you may be eligible
for a Carer’s allowance. This allowance is income tested, and the amount you receive will depend on your income and other circumstances.
• Home modifications: your elderly parent may benefit from making modifications to their home to make it safer and more accessible. The costs associated with these modifications, may be covered by government funding, grants, or loans.
If your elderly parent requires more intensive care and support than a child carer can provide in their own home, the parent may need to move into a residential aged care facility.
Overall, the fees associated with caring for elderly parents may be complex. It is important to seek advice and support from aged care professionals to ensure informed decisions are made

A ring of flags encircled the memorial, including state, national and historically important banners, as the mild autumn weather promised a beautiful day ahead.
With the main flag at half mast, nature began proceedings as dawn broke over the Singing Bridge, and local pelicans and bats performed fly-bys over the Service as the flag was raised.
The dawn crowd stood silent and reverent, encompassing the Memorial, as the program with the welcome from Tea Gardens RSL subBranch President Mal Motum, followed by an audio interpretation of the original ANZAC landing craft on approach at Gallipoli, as the waves at Bennetts Beach crashed audibly in the background.
Beautiful renditions of ‘The Recessional’ and hymn ‘O Valiant Heart’ by local choir group the Myall Melodians, was followed by an oration from the sub-Branch’s Mr Motum.
The Last Post was performed by live bugler as the flag was lowered to half mast, to honour the fallen in all our wars.
The sub-Branch’s Terry Munright recited ‘The Ode of Remembrance’, followed by
Reveille and flag raising to full mast again, and another beautiful singing of ‘Abide With Me’ by the Melodians.
“It is important that we give thanks that we can watch and play games on sports fields today, rather than fight on battlefields,” said local Anglican Reverend Richard Goscombe, who cited the current struggle being fought out by the brave men and women in Ukraine for their own country.
Reverend Goscombe then led the gathering in a prayer, followed by a hearty singing of the National Anthem, as only a Dawn Service crowd can muster.
Following the Service, crowds bussed or walked to the Tea Gardens Country Club for a free bacon and egg BBQ breakfast, paid for by the club, and run by the Pindimar/Tea Gardens RFS volunteers.
Young rower heading for tall ship adventure
By Thomas O’KEEFE
ADVENTURE on the high seas awaits one young man from Tea Gardens, soon to set to sail on a tall ship from Sydney to Brisbane on 7 May.
Fourteen-year-old Kassian Sikora, a member of the Karuah Rowing & Aquatic Club, which operates around North Arm Cove, was nominated by his rowing coach, John Baskett, for the opportunity of a lifetime.
Accepted as a mentor participant in the 2023 Youth Leadership Challenge, Kassian will sail aboard the STV Windeward Bound, a Tasmanian tall ship, from 7-15 May.
The program’s admirable goals, stated by Windeward Bound’s Captain Sarah Parry, are “to expose young Australians to issues of the broader world, a self-learning leadership experience”.
“It is a life-altering experience for everyone onboard, and Kassian will certainly return more mature,” Ms Parry told NOTA.
Kassian started rowing thanks to his mother, Renae, looking for a way to keep her son fit, but moving away from usual team sports.
Word-of-mouth told her of the Rowing Club, and finally they met Mr Baskett and asked him to give Kassian a go.
“Straight away, he took to rowing, because
he listens and asks questions, which I encourage,” Mr Baskett told NOTA.
“After coaching him for just over six months, I believe Kassian can be excellent at rowing, and I wanted to give him every chance in life to succeed in all his goals,” Mr Baskett said.
Kassian’s parents have strong praise for the
work done by Mr Baskett, saying, “He always goes out of his way to find opportunities for the youth he coaches.”
Kassian told News Of The Area his fitness has improved and he feels more flexible since starting rowing.
“John is a good coach, he is committed to
helping me improve,” Kassian stated.
Kassian is busy for a teenager, with a full week including rowing practice three days, a three-bus expedition to school in east Maitland every weekday, and 4am wake-ups on Saturdays to work at the Hunter Valley Providores in Tea Gardens.

Finally, the kids and parents of the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Preschool, Tea Gardens Primary School, and the Hawks Juniors RLFC brought up the rear of the march.
As the marchers circled onto the park and around the memorial, the onlookers, numbering at least 1000, awaited the promised jet flyover from Williamtown and around the Bay.
The fighter could be heard as it zig-zagged between the various services around Port Stephens, before it was spotted off to the north, then
arced in from the Ridge, and zoomed over Tea Gardens with a thunderous roar, to everyone’s delight and amazement.
The 11am service followed, its program similar
to dawn, with the distinct inclusion of special guest speaker local resident and former Governor of NSW, Read Admiral The Hon. Peter Sinclair.
“ANZAC Day is not a
celebration of victory, as the eight-month Gallipoli campaign was a tragic defeat,” Mr Sinclair told the gathering, “It is a reminder of the obscenity of war.”
“This day is to remember courage, loyalty, sacrifice
and mateship – qualities that help to shape the nation’s character.”
Following the program, several luncheon activities were enjoyed by all at the Tea Gardens Country Club, catered by The Garden Eatery.
The traditional rounds of Two-Up began after 12noon at the Country Club and the Tea Gardens Hotel, both locations gathering large crowds of punters for one of the few days of the year the game may be legally played.

ANZAC Day
commemorations in Bulahdelah were a major success, with school children turning out in numbers for the 11am march and the dawn service extremely well attended by the public.
But what does ANZAC Day mean to those who have participated in various conflicts of war?
Bulahdelah RSL subBranch Vice President Greg Hayes told News Of The Area, “There’s more of an awareness with younger people now than when I was young and that’s a great thing.
“My father and grandfather were veterans and didn’t talk much about it,” said Mr Hayes.
Bulahdelah RSL subBranch president Dennis Coulter said, “It’s only now that people are starting to talk about it.
“ANZAC Day is not about glorifying war but rather celebrating those who have served to preserve freedom and remembering their gallantry,” said Mr Coulter.
Sub-Branch Secretary/ Treasurer Steven Newman said, “Our fathers and grandfathers served and we follow in their footsteps.
“Many of our fallen comrades have gone before
us and we like to remember them.
“We would like to thank the general public for the support we got.

Myall friends support Cambodian Village
By Thomas O’KEEFE
A VILLAGE in Cambodia, some 30km outside Angkor Wat, has established a strong and special connection with the people of Tea Gardens and surrounding areas, thanks in no small part to the selfless efforts of Jan and Owen Holbert.
The Holberts presented the Tea Gardens Family Research Group (TGFRG) a slide show of their time in Romdoul village, where they have been helping to raise the kids out of poverty through donations from friends and incredible projects like the building of the local school.
After a diagnosis of an incurable disease in 1993, Mr Holbert was encouraged by his wife to travel, “One place every year until he couldn’t do it anymore.”
They visited China and many South-East Asian nations, but when they finally set sights on Cambodia, they did their homework.
Through a local foundation called ‘Trailblazer’, they were introduced to the rural village of Romdoul in 2013, where there was no electricity, no working toilets, and the ‘school’ was a class of 57 kids crammed beneath an old building.
“The standard that you walk by is the standard that you accept,” Mr Holbert told the gathering at the TGFRG.
“Villagers were drinking dirty water from ponds, with no toilets to speak of.”
When they asked the village chief what was needed, a school (with toilets) was at the top of the list.
Subsequent trips have installed sand-filters for drinking-water, and the first working septic toilets.
The school’s purposedesigned three rooms have also been augmented with a new structure, and a kitchen that ensures that village kids

Walker takes on Melbourne to Brisbane trek
By Thomas O’KEEFE
YOU may have seen a man walking along the Myall Way on Monday, 24 April, the latest leg in his epic journey from Melbourne to Brisbane.
Leon Sappl, from Perth via Melbourne, had travelled Europe, but in hindsight, “I travelled with my eyes closed until I got to Cambodia.”
A student of economics, Leon told NOTA, “In my early 20s naivety, I wanted to help, which is why I went to Cambodia as an ESL teacher.
“I soon began to see South East Asia as a ‘last frontier’ of sorts, realising the trauma left over from the Khmer Rouge regime, but also the heavy
influences from Vietnam, Thailand and the USA.”
In Cambodia, Leon said he had witnessed such a different way of life and culture, that “the cognitive dissonance of the modern lifestyle became unbearable for me”.
“I wanted to undertake some kind of pursuit to appreciate how much we take for granted.”
The original plan was to trek from Cambodia to Europe, but after a series of personal and family issues, he found himself back in Australia, and was soon stuck in Melbourne’s rolling lockdowns.
“I quit my job and packed
up my life in February, 2020, but couldn’t truly begin until September 2022,” Leon said.
“The idea is to see Australia’s east coast as though I am the first person to discover it,” Leon said, explaining why he chose to walk, rather than drive.
With his entire life compacted into a custom walking trailer, accompanied by his faithful Cambodian canine companion, Qualia, Leon had already faced massive trials and challenges before reaching the Myall Coast.
“Bellbird Hill, just outside Eden, really made me think about what I truly need to survive.
“I now have a ‘serendipity’ philosophy, I will talk to the locals rather than use a map,
Travelling rocks bring smiles to the Myall
By Thomas O’KEEFE
PAINTED rocks are prompting smiles along the Myall Coast, part of a movement that has already gone international.
Port Stephens local Sarah Mischin, of Mischin Cleaning Co., first encountered the ‘travelling rocks’ phenomenon
while recently travelling interstate.
“I found a rock someone had painted two people, and the words ‘Big Hug’, which had come from halfway across the country,” Sarah Mischin told News Of The Area.
“I got hooked while on holidays, painted a few and
left them in SA,” Ms Mischin continued.
The quiet concept already has a strong internet presence, with Facebook pages for all

“The best experiences were the ones not planned,” Leon happily admitted.
Facebook keyword on the back, then are left out for people to discover.
A discovered rock can be whisked far away, and a photo shared online, to spread the
journey one of her rocks has taken.
“I recently went to Sydney and dropped one off in Darling Harbour and posted a photo,” Kaye Simpson, of Hawks Nest First National Real Estate, told NOTA.
“Sarah then found a post of the rock in Lennox Head –how cool is that!”
“We here at the office are having so much fun, and getting so much joy, out of this as she leaves us rocks to put out the front of our office on the flower bed, we wait excitedly to see who will pick them up.”

New welcome sign for Tea Gardens –Hawks Nest volunteer organisations
NEWS
‘THE Service Clubs of the Myall Coast Welcome You’ reads the striking new entry sign into Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest, designed and made by local artist and photographer Glen Henry.
The new sign displays nine key local volunteer organisations who all play an important role in our community and who are always happy to welcome new volunteers and/or visitors:
• Lions Club of Tea Gardensteagardens.nsw@lions.org.au
• Galleries in the Gardens Incgigmyall@gmail.com
• Myall Koala and Environment Group – myallkoala.org
• Myall River View Clubmyallriver.viewclub@gmail.com
• Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association – HNTGProgress@ gmail.com

• Australian Red Crossjenny297@outlook.com
• Meals on Wheels – 4997 0701 or 4997 0800
• TGHN Men’s Shed – 7228 9876
The new sign and soon to be planted native garden were all installed by volunteers from the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association Incorporated and the Men’s Shed, with expert oversight and hands-on assistance from Glen Henry.
Both sides of the new sign feature a stunning coastal image taken from Jimmy's Beach out across Port Stephens by the artist.
The new sign was installed because the old sign had been badly vandalised and torn down.
Sandra Bourke, from the Progress Association told NOTA, “We are experiencing ongoing challenges around vandalism, often very inappropriate in content, recurring in our public places, such as the Tea Gardens Skate Park, Lions
Park Lookout, water towers, and under the Singing Bridge.
“Vandalism can often create anxiety in people as it can undermine our sense of community safety and give the impression that our public spaces and private property are not cared for or respected.
“This is not the case.
“The Progress Association and other volunteer groups are committed to working together and with relevant government organisations to restore and improve our public places, but we always need community help.”
Reporting, removing, and preventing vandalism helps.

More information on seagrass debate
DEAR News Of The Area,
SINCE my contribution to the dredging debate (NOTA 27/4) interested readers have requested more information.
The decline in seagrass density has been apparent since circa 1980.
At that time, anyone venturing onto the meadows would sink up to their knees in mud, such was the effectiveness of the Zostera in catching muddy turbulence.
The plight of the seagrass was not proven until 2011 when most of it had disappeared leaving bare sand.
The Scanes Report focused on water discharge and sedimentation acknowledging its disinterest in seagrass (p38).
The “squeaky wheel” of the politics of dredging took precedence, the loss of seagrass has extended throughout Port Stephens and obviously has nothing to do with “salinity”.
It may be linked to the oyster collapse.
The wonderful cleansing action of the flood tide can be compared to a giant broom cleaning up the mess left by the “elephant in the room”... until the ebb tide.
My thesis is the “missing link” squaringup inconsistencies in a long and tedious debate between Col, Len and others.
Regards, Robert ADAMS, Hawks Nest.
Sophie dances to help sick kids NEWS
By John SAHYOUN
SOPHIE Grills of Bulahdelah is dancing to make a difference for sick kids.
Having suffered from multiple health issues over her life she wishes to help others and their families who are under strain to meet their everyday needs and ongoing medical treatment.
Sophie is joining Ronald McDonald House Charities Greater Western Sydney to Dance for Sick Kids this year.
When a child is injured, or diagnosed with a serious illness, it affects the whole family.
Lives can be turned upside down, and it puts families under enormous pressure.
For many families, it can feel like it’s impossible to hold it together.
“I’ll be making a move every day for seven days to raise money that will help families stay in a home-away-from-home and access emotional and financial support,” said Sophie.
“From day one in the hospital and for as long as it takes, your help ensures that families don’t have to navigate the challenges of illness or injury alone.”
Sophie’s parents told News Of The Area, “Our daughter Sophie wants to give back by dancing for sick kids.
“They need us all to help keep their families together in what can be such a devastating time.
“With family close it helps tremendously, so if you can help us spread the word and get people to donate.”
The generosity of the community will make sure that Ronald McDonald House Charities Greater Western Sydney can support even more families with a seriously ill or injured child when they need it most.
“We as a family just wanted to spread the word that Ronald McDonald House is having a fund-raising event called Dance for Sick Kids.
“As a family that has used them, they have done so much for us to keep us close to our daughter over the years for various treatments,” said Sophie’s parents.
You can support Sophie by making a donation at https://www.danceforsickkids. com/fundraisers/sophieg15049
DEAR Jasminda,
MY husband Roger has offered to be the model for a local life art class so he'll have to strip off and have his dad bod on display for members of the local community. What if someone we know is in the class? Why would he do this?
Genevieve F.
Dear Genevieve, BEING a life model is an important role where artists create representations of the human form in all its glory - in this case the glory of Roger, his belly as ripe and malleable as a persimmon.
The Write Direction
By John BLACKBOURN Assault and
battery
EVERY time I receive my quarterly bill for the supply and usage of electricity it feels like I am being “assaulted” by the provider.
One reaction might be to consider “battery” as a means of defence.
The provision of power in our daily lives is one necessity that we can't survive without and electricity is clearly the preferred form, but it comes at an ever increasing cost, as does its partner, gas.
So what can we do in order to modify this cost to an acceptable level?
Using less of it defeats its purpose so we try to obtain it at the lowest possible cost.
Solar panels on the roof are the best way to lower the cost and governments have been very good in encouraging us to install by providing hefty subsidies initially for this purpose, but of course now need to reduce this benefit over coming months.
When I first started to look at the mathematics of installing solar, the industry was in its infancy and the selected supplier said if I could get another four nearby users then further discounts would become available.
So I held free coffee mornings at home in order to explain my research with costs and production possibilities in order to gauge local interest.
Very soon I had over 30 interested neighbours very keen to be involved and do so at discounted prices with the same supplier.
It proved to be hugely successful for both homeowners and supplier installers.
In those days the 3 KW size package was the most cost effective way with direct to mains generating 60 cents per KWH then buying back from the grid at 40 cents per
Herein lies the beauty of life drawing.
The life drawing scene embraces diversity.
Scars and birthmarks and voluptuous bodies are revered; they add interest and variety to an artist's repertoire.
As long as your husband has stamina, patience and confidence (and it appears he does since he has signed up to be a life model), he will no doubt make a great muse for the local community.
I wouldn't worry about someone recognising him.
People who take life drawing classes are interested in art, not the cheap thrill of seeing your Roger reclining on a bi-fold trestle.
KWH for home use. What a great deal that was for us all by getting in during the early stages of availability.
Subsequently subsidies were reduced as uptake spiralled.
It then became necessary to increase the panels and inverter to the 6.6 KW size in order to cover the rising cost of electricity.
Today the family residence needs the 10 KW sized array in order to obtain the best cost efficiency.
My just under 10 KW system (9.8 KW) now produces some 21 KWH of daily power, greater than we consume and going back into the grid at only 5 cents per KWH - so hardly worth the exercise.
The answer now is to consider buying a solar battery that will store much of the daily overproduction so it can be used freely in the evening when the sun doesn’t shine and the wind doesn’t blow.
The Government's Clean Energy Council provides good information online in relation to battery size and brand reliability but of course it is up to the individual homeowner to select brand and obtain installer costs.
My mathematics quickly showed that the cost of battery purchase didn’t make economic sense for my use from say 6 pm until bedtime.
But that calculation was at today’s prices.
Electricity producers are saying that the wholesale price will increase by 60 percent in two years time so the Government responded by saying they won't tolerate that increase so intend to cap the increase at 40 percent.
So I then redid my sums on the 40 percent increase figure which led me to believe that my investment could be returned in a little over three years.
So batteries can be purchased in 5 KW lots and added together in those multiples so it became obvious that starting with a 10 KW battery plus a 5 KW inverter was my most cost effective size.
So, I jumped in and had that system fitted mid-month with the ability to watch its progress via an app on the phone.
The proof of my decision will be in the pudding “as they say” but I’m one of those guys that would just hate to miss out on my free pudding.

A-10 Shun hosts ANZAC Day commemorations
FOR the fourth consecutive year, the locally based A-10 Shun Veterans Support Group held a commemorative ANZAC Day service at its private memorial garden.
“It was an early start this year as dawn was at 0554 hours,” group organiser Shane Griffis told News Of The Area.
“Stand-to was at 0540 hrs and a solemn but moving ceremony was the order of the day.”
Mr Griffis delivered a stirring opening address and recited two poems whilst the sounds of the battlefield played eerily in the
background.
Karen Lambourne then read the prayers and wreaths were laid, before the ode was read and The Last Post was sounded at dawn.
The National Anthem followed before Mr Griffis read his closing statements, with guests invited to attend a gunfire breakfast
“New friendships were forged and old ones reacquainted,” Mr Griffis said.
The A10-Shun Veterans Support Group offered thanks to Barry Brothers Butchers, Guardian Soaps and veteran Glen Cribbs for their
support of the day.
“A very special thanks also to Karen Lambourne for her readings
of the prayers,” Mr Griffis said. “We hope to see you all again next year.”
Bulahdelah a finalist in state tourism award
BULAHDELAH has been announced as a finalist in the NSW Tourism Awards in the top small towns category.
This awards program allows
tiny, small and large tourism towns to highlight the many features that visitors to their areas may consider on their next domestic holiday.
The awards provide communities, business chambers, visitor centres and local governments the opportunity to showcase how their town encourages tourism development, increases visitation and drives the visitor economy for our state.
Bulahdelah Chamber of Commerce and Tourism President John Sahyoun told News Of The Area, “I was blown away by this as I thought it was almost impossible to get it over the line given the relatively short time frame but we have a team of extremely capable and enthusiastic people who made it possible.
“We are up against some stiff competition in our category but we think we are the best there is - so fingers crossed,” said Mr Sahyoun.
Entrants were required to produce a short video, an itinerary and a website to allow the judges to gauge each area.

Karuah overcome Hawks in local derby battle
By Thomas O’KEEFE
A TOP-OF-THE-TABLE grudge match ensued last Sunday as the Karuah Roos faced off against the Tea Gardens Hawks at Lionel Morten Oval for the second game of the season on 30 April.
“This is definitely the local derby,” Aaron Neighbour, Vice President of Hawks RLFC, told
News Of The Area.
Neither side managed to pierce the other’s strong defences for the first quarter, with more than a few errors at both ends.
The first successful try was in the 26th minute for the Roos’, by Simi Asomua, successfully converted by Samuel Croese.
The Hawks soon responded with Aiden Bills’ first try, although
the conversion was wide.
As the clock wound down to half time, the Roos lost nearly 20 metres to a bad pass, and the Hawks suffered a send-off three minutes before the buzzer.
Karuah’s second attempt to score looked amazing, but was ruled as a drop before the line, leaving the half-time score at a nail-biting 6-4, Karuah’s lead.
The Hawks vaulted out of the gates for the second half, with a 45-metre run straight from the
assistance of the public in helping to win the award.
For final judging the public have the chance to choose their favourite destination in each category, writing a short review on why a particular area is a worthy destination to visit for a short stay.
An explanatory video on how to vote is on the Bulahdelah Chamber of Commerce and Tourism facebook page.
To vote visit https://www. businessnsw.com/events/toptourism-town-awards-2022-nsw or use the QR code.
Voting closes in a week so Bulahdelah needs your support now.
“We would encourage as many people as possible to vote for us as it allows everyone to give their thumbs up to what we believe is the best area in the state and lets the wider community know what we are about,” said Mr Sahyoun.
The eventual winner of each category will be announced at the NSW tourism conference in May with the winner of each category going on to represent the state in the national finals in November.
SPORT
kick-off, but, sadly, to no avail.
An unfortunate fumble by the Hawks, right on the try-line, was capitalised upon, with Roos’ Koby Martyn intercepting, running 30 metres, then handing off to Adam Crampton, who took it in for a try between the uprights, which was easily converted.
Emotions ran exponentially higher into the second half, reflected in the harder hits on the field, with a few players on both sides left prone or even carried off.
Karuah’s third (converted) try came via Daniel Evans, with the Hawks’ second try via Aiden Bills, successfully, and redemptively, converted by Jacob Palm-Wicks.
The Hawks’ final surge lost momentum with an off-side ruling, followed by Karuah’s fourth try by Adam Crampton again, said to be the league’s leading try-scorer so far.
The full-time score of 22-10, Karuah the victors, sets up the Hawks for revenge in the next ‘local derby’ match.

BOWLERS learned last Wednesday of the sudden passing of great friend Bob Skews.
Bob had a long association with the Men’s Bowling Club covering many years and with his lovely wife Pam, previously deceased, were formidable players for Tea Gardens.
Both represented the Club in Pennant competitions with Bob in
high demand as a specialist lead player.
Bob at one time was also a Director on the Board of the Country Club.
I think that just about everyone in Tea Gardens knew Bob and he will be remembered with great affection.

Back at their spiritual home base at Lionel Morten Oval, the proud Roos have opened the 2023 season with impressive performances in the Newcastle Hunter Mens Northern Conference.
Steeped in tradition, the Roos have produced an array of talent over the years and have fielded some powerful combinations throughout the mens senior ranks.
One of the club’s greatest ever outfits was the premiership-winning 1975 Karuah side that defeated Gateshead 23-12 in a hardfought Grand Final to clinch the Newcastle Second Division premiership.
Club President Daniel Evans told News Of The Area, “The 1975 Roos have a special place in the Karuah club’s annals and are widely regarded as one of the region’s best ever teams.
“They etched their names in Roos’ folklore for their skill and tenacity and never-say-die spirit that was the cornerstone of many club victories,” reflected Evans.
Under inspirational captain-coach Russell Elkin, the mighty Roos finished minor and major premiers to bring home the John Dunn Cup trophy.
Other team members included Kevin Smith, Terry Dew, Neil Gardiner, Barry Peacock, Eric Lambourne, Russell Sellers, Bruce Mathews, Phil Fraser, Doug Bowden, Allan Robards, Ian Chapman, John Martin, Mick Sackley, Ken Maytom, Rodney Gough, Kelvin Woodward, Danny Manton,
Harold Evans and Darrell Johnson.
The team’s manager was Harry Chapman and ball boys were Timothy Greentree and Darrin Ray.
Karuah’s womens representative prop and skipper Jess Neilson is the niece of Kelvin Woodward
and the granddaughter of former Roos legend Lionel Morten while Harold Evans is the great uncle of current mens hooker and Club President Daniel Evans.
The Roos have opened their Mens A Grade campaign with rousing victories over Waratah Mayfield (34-12)
30 were Greg Smith, Graham Reynolds, and John Slater.
The Garden Eatery voucher was won by Lon Richards. Our thanks to the Garden Eatery for their support.

They lost overall by 7 shots 53-60 and now drop a place to 5th on the ladder.
In other news.
Entries in the Mixed Pairs competition will close on 5 May.

ANGLERS were on the waters around Karuah all weekend, with the successful return of the Karuah Motor Yacht Club’s (KMYC) annual fishing competition from Friday 28 April to Sunday 30 April.
With 30 entrants in the three categories, Estuary, Offshore and the new ‘Beach’ Fishing, Commodore Jim Timony of the KYMC seemed very happy with the outcome.
“It was pretty successful, the ocean fishing did well, as were the catches in the estuary, despite some trouble with the boats early on,” Commodore Timony told News Of The Area.
Judged by the famous ‘unofficial Mayor of Broughton Island’, Bob Dyer, the winners were stoked to see their
time on the water yield such voluminous returns.
“The average weights for each category were 0.7kg for both Beach and Offshore fishing, the biggest offshore catch was Ron Thomas’ 1.06kg snapper, and 0.5kg for the Estuary,” Kylie Ghys, the event’s organiser at KYMC, told NOTA.
Three juniors entered this year, with two taking home the trophies, Myels Hood won ‘Best Estuary’ with a 0.3kg flathead, and Riley Harris took ‘Best Beach’ with a 0.76kg bream, Harris also took the overall Juniors’ catch award.
In following tradition, the ‘Horse’s Arse’ award, recognising poor planning/ judgement, went reluctantly to the crew of ‘Karma’, for using dirty fuel.
