“‘shocked and surprised,” but also “very proud” to have won the award.

“I always took advantage of the opportunities that were available,” Amber told News Of The Area.

“My mother believed that having a broad range of experiences was important and she always encouraged me to get involved and do my best.”

Amber said the prize will help with her plans to begin a mathematics teaching degree at the University of Newcastle next year.

Amber was honoured to receive her award from former Bulahdelah Central School student, Ampol Marine Compliance Specialist Trent Styles, at the school presentation assembly.

Ampol Managing Director and CEO Matt Halliday said the company was proud to celebrate the achievements of Australia’s emerging leaders in the classroom, on the sporting field, in arts and culture and across the community.

“Ampol is a proud Australian company and this program forms part of our commitment to supporting communities and recognising the best all-round achievements of our young leaders across the country,” Mr Halliday said.

“Everyone at Ampol wishes to congratulate our winners for this well-deserved recognition.”

More Defibrillator Funding For Sports Clubs

CARDIAC arrests can happen anywhere, anytime and even apparently fit and healthy people can suffer from one of these life threatening emergencies.

Community sporting clubs and organisations can now apply for life-saving defibrillators as part of the NSW Government’s Local Sport Defibrillator Grant Program.

Minister for Sport Alister Henskens said the NSW Government has committed $2 million over four years to the program, ensuring more sporting clubs and councils are equipped to respond to life-threatening emergencies.

“Whether you’re at your local sailing club or playing footy with your mates, when

someone has a cardiac arrest, time is crucial – they can happen to anyone, anytime, or anywhere so it’s vital that a defibrillator is readily accessible,” Mr Henskens said.

The Local Sports Defibrillator Program is available to sport and recreation clubs, associations and organisations as well as councils and service clubs.

Up to $3,000 is available per device with organisations able to apply for up to three devices.

Applications are open and close Friday 10 February 2023.

Since 2017, more than 2,000 devices have been installed at sports facilities across the State.

The co-deputy Director of the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, Professor

What does “vacant possession” mean?

When a property is sold with vacant possession, it means the property needs to be cleared of all personal property and any tenant needs to have vacated by the completion date.

When entering into a Contract for Sale for a property which is sold with vacant possession, it can mean different things depending on whether you are selling or buying.

When selling - this can include:

• Removing all items from the property, such as furniture;

• Removing building materials stored in the garage, shed or under the house;

• Removing any items such as car body parts, tyres, etc; or

• Providing a tenant with the correct notice to vacate the property.

It would not include removal of any fixtures and fittings included in the Contract for Sale.

The Purchaser is entitled to vacant possession under the Contract and settlement can be delayed or the Purchaser could seek compensation to attend to the removal post settlement.

When purchasing - you

should consider:

• If the property appears to be untidy or has building materials or examples as mentioned above stored at the property and if so, you should advise your conveyancer/ solicitor and they may be able to negotiate a clean-up clause in the Contract on your behalf so that the Contract is conditional upon the Vendor completing this work before you are required to settle; or

• When completing the final inspection, which you are entitled to under the Contract, if the property should be in the same condition it was in when you agreed to purchase or if a clean-up clause or any other conditions apply and then ensure those works/conditions have been completed by the Vendor.

If those works have not been completed, you are not required to settle until they are, and you cannot be penalised for the Vendor’s delay.

Mullane & Lindsay would be happy to assist you with your next sale or purchase. Please feel free to contact Michele Rumph of our office on 02 4928 7300.

Jamie Vandenberg, said people who play sport may think they are healthy but sudden cardiac arrest does not discriminate.

“Sudden cardiac arrest is a devastating disease which takes the lives of nine out of ten people who suffer an arrest outside of hospital. It’s vital we install as many lifesaving defibrillators as possible across NSW and beyond and that people know how to use them,” Professor Vandenberg said.

“I encourage sporting clubs to apply for these generous grants that will help prevent the trauma, and the heartache, that cardiac arrest causes families."

A Midcoast Council spokesperson told News Of The Area, “Defibrillators, where they exist, are the property of individual sporting associations, not MidCoast Council.

“We encourage MidCoast sporting clubs to apply for funding for defibrillators to improve the safety of their activities.”

the pool ramp tiling and plumbing.

“We had hoped to see the pool open before Christmas but the reality is now a mid-January target for completion,” said Council’s Manager of Strategy and Projects, Amanda Hatton.

“However, we will continue to keep the community updated on this matter as it progresses.”

MidCoast Council is working with the Head Contractor to outsource and engage a suitable pool tiling specialist.

A lack of access and sub–

contractor commitment from form and steel workers, and concreters throughout the project has contributed to the current delay.

Earlier this year, prolonged wet weather affected large machinery accessing the site.

Engineering issues including subsoil contamination, damage to the existing pool structure and undermined base layers only became evident after demolition works began.

“We are very disappointed that we have been unable to complete works and open the pool so

far this season,” added Ms Hatton.

“We are looking forward to sharing a more inclusive facility with better accessibility for the Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest community once we work through the considerable issues that have delayed the project.”

The $700,000 improvement project includes the installation of a new access ramp, all-access shower and toilet, all-access pathways and upgrades to the existing amenities.

Focus on local roads

MIDCOAST Mayor Claire Pontin has welcomed last week’s announcement that $1.2 million would be provided to MidCoast Council for urgent pothole repair.

Mayor Pontin said the money, funded under the Fixing Local Roads Pothole Repair Round, would be highly beneficial after the region was hit by floods and severe weather several times this year.

“We have more than 3,600 kilometres of local and

regional roads to manage across the MidCoast Council area that have been badly damaged.

“Every dollar counts towards ensuring they are repaired as quickly as possible,” Mayor Claire Pontin said.

Following the announcement, locals are calling for a greater focus on improving road conditions in Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest.

Local Anne Reynolds told News Of The Area, “Apart from the M1, the maintenance of all roads in our LGA are the

responsibility of MidCoast Council.

“The main access to Forster, Failford Road, is in 99 percent high quality condition, ensuring locals and holiday makers have safe driving conditions.”

Like many others, Anne would like to see those conditions replicated on the Myall Coast.

She is appealing to MidCoast Council to “please show you respect the lives of people in Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest before there is a fatality”.

Myall Coast Radio Looks to the Future

MYALL Coast Radio has now been broadcasting for almost three years, with plans in place to ensure its sustainability well into the future.

Since initial discussions in 2019, when establishing a local station was described as “a great idea”, Myall Coast Radio has gone from strength to strength.

With the decision to be a live streaming service, listening to local radio programs from anywhere in the world has never been easier.

Indications from Myall Coast Radio show that many regular listeners tune in from across the globe.

Moving forward, President of the Myall Coast Radio Committee, Chris Lock, said a membership drive will be starting in the new year.

"Our average listener base has been the 45-to-65year range and of those, 64 percent has been women,” he said.

"Our aim is to improve our listener base, and we have set a target to increase our membership by 50 percent to help achieve this goal."

Additionally, the

organisation has increased its social media presence by 70 percent in the past few weeks to help spread the word.

Myall Coast Radio, run completely by volunteers and reliant on sponsorship, are always looking for new people to get involved.

From assisting with programming, technical support, sponsorship and day to day back-office issues, through to becoming a presenter and sharing your passions with the world, there is something for everyone.

Those who are interested in supporting the organisation should contact Myall Coast Radio at admin@ myallcoastradio.com.au.

Have Your Say On Dementia

THE National Dementia Action Plan is an opportunity for those living with dementia to have their say.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics states that there were an estimated 219,000 Australians with dementia, a 12.7 percent

increase from the 194,400 with the condition in 2015.

Dementia Australia welcomes the opening of the Australian Government’s Department of Health and Aged Care National Dementia Action Plan (the Action Plan) consultation process and calls for people living with dementia, their families and carers, as well

as health, disability and aged care professionals, and academics to contribute.

Dementia Australia Chief Operating Officer Anthony Boffa said the National Dementia Action Plan consultation process is an important opportunity for everyone who has firsthand experience of dementia to have their say and influence what needs to be at the forefront of the government’s attention.

“This includes people of all ages living with all forms of dementia, their families, carers and friends, people who work in primary care, health, acute or aged care, and researchers and academics,” Mr Boffa said.

“We know that there are up to half a million Australians living with dementia – which is projected to increase to 1.1 million people by 2058, so we welcome the government’s focus on ensuring the contribution of people living with dementia, their families and carers is central to the Action Plan from the outset.”

The Action Plan is a joint initiative between the Federal Government and state and territory governments.

It is a ten-year plan for the government to put people living with dementia, their families

and carers at the centre of all action on dementia.

The consultation process aims to ensure that the voices of all people living with dementia and those involved in their care are reflected in Australia’s priorities for future action on dementia.

Feedback is invited on each of the seven draft objectives, as well as corresponding challenges and possible actions. Objectives are: tackling stigma and discrimination, minimising risk, delaying onset and progression, improving diagnosis and post-diagnostic support and care, improving treatment, coordination, and support along the dementia journey, supporting people caring for those living with dementia, building dementia capability in the workforce, and improving data and maximising the impact of dementia research and innovation.

“Through creating the Action Plan, the government is demonstrating a commitment to developing a more coordinated approach to dementia risk reduction, early diagnosis and improvements to services for people living with dementia, their families and carers,” Mr Boffa said.

“We support the Action

Plan and will continue to work closely with the Federal Government to ensure that, when delivered, the Action Plan will be fully funded and provide a clear vision for the future, where all Australians understand dementia and all people living with all forms of dementia and their carers have quality of life, and that no one is left to experience dementia alone.”

Feedback will help inform the development of the Action Plan, which is expected to be finalised in 2023.

The feedback process is open until 31 January 2023.

Feedback can be provided by completing a survey which takes approximately fifteen minutes, online, via email, post or by calling 1800 565 789 to provide feedback over the phone or to request a hard copy of the paper and/or survey.

To access the National Dementia Action Plan consultation paper and for further details please visit www. agedcareengagement. health.gov.au/ dementiaplan/.

For support, please contact the National Dementia Helpline on 1800 100 500.

Reminder to red zone beekeepers

THE NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) Varroa mite emergency response is reminding all beekeepers in the eradication or red zones that they cannot re-establish bees in those zones until they are deemed safe.

NSW DPI Chief Plant Protection Officer Dr Satendra Kumar says it is

important all beekeepers are on the same page and that the message is clear.

“We have almost successfully euthanised all managed hives in the red zone, but we are hearing some reports of people attempting to establish, or re-establish bees, which is not allowed under the emergency order,” he said.

“The goal of the Varroa

mite Response is the full eradication of the parasite from NSW, which is the best outcome for Australia's $147M honey bee industry, the $14.2B pollination reliant industries and the communities they support.

“Full eradication requires us to euthanise 100 percent of Varroa hosts, being all European honey bees in the red zones,

managed and wild, and to ensure the red zones are free from Varroa mite for a period of time to support a declaration that Australia is free of the mite.”

Euthanising all bees in these areas removes any chance of Varroa mite surviving and spreading undetected through potential future hosts, where incubation of the

parasite may be happening.

“NSW DPI knows this is difficult for beekeepers and appreciates the cooperation we are seeing from the majority of people,” Dr Kumar said.

“Reimbursement is available for registered beekeepers in the red zone in consideration of the financial impact of the response and

acknowledgement that it may be a few years before hives can be managed in this zone.

“Our aim is to get to this freedom of Varroa as soon as possible, and we will be keeping our communication lines open so that beekeepers know how things are progressing.”

this summer’s events are designed to be fun, connect our communities, and encourage visitors and residents to spend time in our beautiful outdoors.

“We’ve been listening to the types of activities our community wants to see and this summer we’re trialling a new program including markets, public art, musical performances, street performances and evening activities,” Ms Herrmann said.

“We’re really excited to have some first-time

events happening in areas such as Fern Bay, Karuah, Seaham, Anna Bay, Salt Ash and Lemon Tree Passage, so if you’re looking for something to do, there’s sure to be an activity in an area close to you.”

The It’s on! Tastes Like Summer events are on 2 December, 6 January and 3 February from 4pm to 8pm at Longworth Park, Karuah.

Galleries in the Gardens exhibits ‘Self Portraits’

(BCS) Visual Art students were recently given the opportunity to exhibit their self-portraits at Galleries in the Gardens in Tea Gardens.

The self-portraits, in a variety of expressive forms, were undertaken at school over the last twelve months.

Students and their family and friends were invited to the exhibition and presentation of the awards by Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington and the president of the gallery committee.

First prize of $200 was awarded to Hannah Bailee-Angeles for her outstanding body of work, ‘Me, Myself and I’, which included an etching, a painting inspired by Margaret Olley, ceramic sculptures

and a traditional Indigenous style painting.

The Encouragement Award of $200 was presented to Jazz Bishell by Kate Washington, Member for Port Stephens, for her original etching and digital imagery.

All other students received a $50 award in recognition of their creativity and commitment, with some students being able to sell their artworks.

Sue Cross, BCS Visual Arts Teacher, would like to thank everyone who contributed to the organisation of this amazing opportunity for emerging visual artists at Bulahdelah Central School.

Sue is also looking forward to the continuation of this positive connection between the creative community of Galleries in the

Myall Masters Back in Tea Gardens Pool

AFTER numerous delays, Myall Masters has been assured by MidCoast Council that it’s all systems go to commence regular Monday afternoon training sessions on Monday 12 December.

The Tea Gardens Pool is usually open for the commencement of the September/October school holidays.

Due to unfinished upgrades being made to the pool, this starting date was pushed back until the weekend of 5 November.

As work still was not completed by this date, Myall Masters were informed they could program their training schedule to commence on Monday 28 November.

Again deadlines were not met by Council and contractors and the club has now been assured by Council that they will be able to commence their long-awaited training sessions on Monday 12 December.

Chris Dunning, Publicity Officer, Myall Masters told News Of The Area, “To compensate for the lack of availability of our pool for over

These sessions are led by qualified coaches who volunteer their time and tailor programs to cater to all fitness and skill levels.

“A culture of ‘Fun, Fitness and Friendship’ is nurtured,” Chris said.

BCS students take on Love Bites program

YEAR 10 students from

Central School (BCS) recently had the opportunity once again to participate in the Love Bites program.

The program is delivered across numerous schools each year and addresses the important topics of relationship violence and consent.

This reinforces the teaching and learning in relation to these topics that has already occurred in class through the junior PDHPE (Personal Development, Health and Physical Education) program.

Presenters from community health and NSW Police delivered the program.

Warren Jones, Acting Deputy Principal Wellbeing, BCS, said the participating students were fantastic ambassadors for the school.

“Every year I am told by the presenters that BCS is one of their favourite schools to visit because of the positive way in which the students engage with them,” Mr Jones said.

“In the after-lunch session, students were given some time to compose an original artwork that captured a key message from the day for them.

“I would like to finish by thanking the presenters, Tony and Cheryl, and also the students for their demonstration of PRIDE throughout the day.”

On theCouch

DEAR Jasminda,

I've recently had the flu and so my husband has been sleeping in the office.

The thing is, I've been sleeping better than I have in years.

There is no one pulling the covers off me.

I don't get cold. I can't hear his snoring.

How should I approach speaking to him about keeping this arrangement?

Is speed camera on Myall Street warranted?

DEAR News Of The Area,

A REGULAR visitor to Myall Street, Tea Gardens, is an unmarked white sedan with a ‘Radar Speed Check’ placard on the roof.

One day there was one on each side of the road.

The hours they spend here seem disproportionate to the area’s population and the amount of dangerous driving.

Eye watering fines are regularly imposed and must suck discretionary spending from local pockets.

Is it correct that these traps are run by private contractors?

Do they get a cut of the fines paid?

Do they decide for themselves where they will work?

Do the fines go to improve the roads where they are imposed or just go to fatten NSW State coffers while the MidCoast Council struggles to keep Myall Street in good repair?

Regards, Marjorie Sutcliffe, Hawks Nest.

Tracey Bennett joins NOTA

NEWS Of The Area is proud to announce that Tracey Bennett has joined the organisation as a Client Account Manager.

Tracey joins the business after more than ten years with the Port Stephens Examiner, where she developed strong relationships with the business sector across the region.

The Medowie local said she is “excited to take on new challenges” in her new role and to help grow the reach of NOTA in the community.

“It is very exciting to be involved in building the paper up.

“It is great that News Of The Area is a small family business, run from Port Stephens.

"The paper is very community minded which I really like.

“Hopefully we can keep building.”

Close to 600 participants competed over four distances in the Super Sprint, Sprint, Standard and Aquabike categories.

Elite Energy needed to engage over 60 event helpers and again, the call out was answered by local community groups, schools and sporting clubs that all came to assist and in return received a donation back to their club or schools.

Hawks Nest was selected as a location for

SPORT

Dear Miriam,

I KNOW of many couples who no longer share a bed and they seem to be thriving for reasons very similar to the ones you've outlined.

Some have gone a step further and moved into separate residences, rekindling the romance in their relationship by inviting each other over for meals.

Poor sleep can have an impact on many things including your attention span, your mood, your decisionmaking ability, and your overall health.

Perhaps your husband's quality of sleep has also improved.

If you are worried about losing your romantic attachment to each other, remind yourself that there is very little romance in wanting to throttle your partner because he snores like a freight train. Perhaps you could have sleepovers or sneak into each other's rooms to keep things exciting. You'll probably have a lot more energy if you are both sleeping soundly.

Carpe diem, Jasminda.

From this week, Tracey will be helping local businesses achieve their marketing goals with NOTA and welcomes any business interested in advertising through the paper to get in touch.

“I look forward to catching up with as many people as possible, rekindling old friendships and starting new ones,” she said.

Tracey joins NOTA at a time of growth, with the well-loved TV guide being reintroduced to the Port Stephens paper from this week.

Feedback from volunteers and participants from the event is all positive and the Tri Hawks Nest Event is now an annual event that will be scheduled in November 2023.

The venue offered a fast and flat bike course and an amazing run course

The local community of Hawks Nest turned out to cheer the athletes on from the sidelines.

The presentation awards for the event were hosted at the iconic Tea Gardens Hotel.

Team Hawks Nest, which is not affiliated with a running club, took out six first place medals at the event.

FRIDAY CHRISTMAS WITH AUSTRALIAN WOMEN’S WEEKLY

TEN, 7.30pm

The incoming host of The Project, Sarah Harris (above left), along with Santa’s team of elves at the Australian Women’s Weekly are here with some famous friends and a selection of handy tips for getting through the silly season unscathed. While Jessica Rowe gets creative with crafty Christmas decorations and eyecatching wrapping ideas, chefs Lyndey Milan and Warren Mendes share their most delicious recipes for your festive functions.

SATURDAY CHRISTMAS WITH DELTA

NBN, 7.30pm

Delta Goodrem has reason to celebrate this Christmas – next year will mark the 20th anniversary of her record-breaking debut album Eyes; she’s loved up with her long-time boyfriend Matthew Copley; and she’s set to perform at a special event in the Maldives in May. But before she turns her focus to 2023, the Born to Try singer gets into the festive spirit with this cheerful special. Among the stars joining Goodrem to sing some Christmas classics are Hanson, Thelma Plum, The Lumineers, Conrad Sewell, Sam Fischer and Gwen Stefani. Goodrem also pays a heartfelt tribute to her mentor and friend, the late, great Olivia NewtonJohn.

TUESDAY MINISERIES: CROSSFIRE

TEN, 8.30pm

Prepare to be emotionally pummelled by this gripping threepart British drama. Airing over three consecutive nights, you might find the gut-wrenching scenario interrupting any idyllic dreams of a carefree holiday. Starring Keeley Hawes (The Bodyguard), who also co-produced, it’s not based on a true story, but has the ingredients of being ripped from multiple headlines. In tonight’s premiere, ex-cop Jo’s (Hawes) sun, pool and cocktail-filled family and friends holiday is devastated when gunmen attack the luxurious Spanish hotel they are staying at. Suddenly, the mother-ofthree transforms into a rifle-toting heroine in a transfixing, gripping turn.

Time to Celebrate

THE Hawks Nest Ladies Golf once again celebrated a successful year at their presentation luncheon and annual meeting held at the golf club this week with over 70 ladies in attendance.

Congratulations go to the Ladies Club Champion and Division 1 scratch winner for 2022 – Mandy Dickson.

Mandy certainly had a very successful year, also winning the Division 1 Shortcourse Championship; the Veteran Women’s Golf Association Country Cup ‘Best Score for NSW’; winner of the Captains Trophy for best scratch score over the season; and was runner-up with Carolyn Affleck in the scratch event of the Foursomes Championship for the best

54 hole nett score over the championship rounds.

Sue Kovacs was the worthy nett winner of the Division 1 Championship.

Championship Division 2 scratch winner was Judy Benson, with Helena Wilton the worthy nett winner.

Division 3 Championship scratch winner was Susan Fordy and Diana Smith the nett winner.

Congratulations go to all trophy and medal winners for their sensational results and supporting ladies golf through what proved to be quite a difficult season.

Unfortunately there were many cancellations of events due to the huge deluges of rain throughout the year, causing many disruptions and course closures.
