Carnival feeling as BCS secondary students hit the pool
IN gloriously warm conditions, local students took to the pool for the annual Bulahdelah Central School secondary swimming carnival.
Participation from both staff and students was excellent, with the continuous swim hotly contested and the noodle relay bringing out the competitive streak in all participants and spectators cheering from the poolside.
There were several classic catches made and the belly flop competition provided entertainment for the crowd.
The day ended with mixed relays and the staff again entered a team into

MidCoast Council has already been working to support the local koala population through its environmental levy.
This new partnership means Council now has the resources to do more as part of their Koala Safe Spaces Program.
The Koala Safe Spaces Program will begin with an effort to learn more about our local koalas, how they’re doing and where they can still be found.
This will include the most extensive koala survey ever conducted on the MidCoast.
The results will help scientists better understand how to protect or restore koala habitats.
“Parts of the MidCoast region provide some of the best opportunities to see koalas in the wild,” said MidCoast Council’s Manager Natural Systems, Gerard Tuckerman.
“An important thing we can all do is report koala sightings.”
Council operates an online koala reporting form which has received over 300 sightings to date.
If you see a koala, go to Council’s website to report your observation at www. midcoast.nsw.gov.au/Community/Ourenvironment/Environmental-Projects/ MidCoast-Koala-Mapping.
Any sick or injured koalas should be immediately reported to Koalas in Care (0439 406 770) in northern parts of the MidCoast or Wildlife in Need of Care (1300 946 295) in the south.
Council will also be looking to establish “safe spaces” for koalas.
With a significant proportion of local
koala populations on private land, Council will be working with local landholders to improve koala habitats.
“We applaud the work of many locals who are already doing some fantastic work tree planting and protecting the special patches of bush on their blocks.
“We’ll now be able to better support these efforts,” said Mayor Pontin.
“We also hope many other landholders will volunteer to get involved.”
Council would like to hear from landholders willing to host a koala dog survey team on their land.
This will help determine where koala
populations are.
Land owners can also volunteer to help create or protect existing koala habitats or corridors.
If you’d like to help out, visit www. midcoast.nsw.gov.au/koalasafespaces or contact Council on (02) 7955 7777.
With koala populations declining in many parts of NSW, the MidCoast is now at the frontline of koala preservation.
This koala conservation program is possible thanks to the NSW Koala Strategy and with contributions from MidCoast Council’s environmental levy.

One Nation push back on offshore wind zone
WHEN the Albanese Government announced their intention last week to explore the possibility of a new offshore wind zone in the Pacific Ocean off the Hunter, Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen described the world’s climate emergency as “regional Australia’s jobs opportunity”.
Labor believes the proposed offshore wind area, off the coast of Newcastle and Port Stephens, will create thousands of jobs in related industries.
The Australian Government has set a target of net zero emissions by 2050 and is looking to reduce emissions by 43 percent, and by 2030 to have 82 percent of Australia’s electricity generated from renewable sources.
With the Government now seeking community feedback on the project, One Nation’s
candidate for Port Stephens in the coming state election, Mark Watson, has been quick to voice his displeasure.
A media statement released by Watson on Thursday outlined the One Nation position, describing the push towards renewable energy as a ‘pointless transition, given that Australia’s emissions are not large enough to impact on global surface temperatures’.
Mr Watson instead believes the region should instead focus on preserving existing resources and manufacturing jobs.
“NSW should be a global energy superpower with flourishing coal, gas and nuclear and even renewable power, this project off the coast of Port Stephens is the wrong choice for our region,” he said.
“The conversion to a new electricity grid will cost tens
of billions of dollars, now being paid for by taxpayers, households and businesses through their skyrocketing power bills.”
Mr Watson is also concerned about the visual impact of the proposed wind zone.
“The last thing we need off the coasts of Newcastle and Port Stephens are 130 of these unreliable eyesores.
“I would not want to stand at the top of Tomaree Mountain looking at these in the distance.
“So far, many I have spoken to in the community agree,” he said.
The area being considered begins at least 5.4 nautical miles (approximately ten kilometres) from shore.
Offshore wind turbines are the tallest renewable energy option being proposed in the area, with current heights of up to approximately

She was a bit taken back initially but expressed her thanks to the Careers

According to the Government’s proposal documents, the offshore wind turbines are likely to be visible from the shore.
Their visual effect will depend on their distance to the shore, and the location and number of approved projects and where they are viewed from.
The exact location of projects and number of turbines within the declared area is yet to be determined.

It was an interesting journey to become a Careers Teacher for Ms Drenkhahn, having served over time in Trundle, Broken Hill, Forster and currently for seven years at Bulahdelah Central.
“People don't normally just come into the system as careers teachers,” Ms Drenkhahn told News Of The Area.
“My original training was primary and my first year out was 1990.
“I couldn't get a job so I retrained with the department general secondary.
“In my second year there at Trundle the person who was doing the careers
load moved on and the boss nominated me as the careers advisor.
“I went from there to Broken Hill high as a full time careers advisor and then to the Forster Senior campus for three years and I needed a change so I transferred to Bulahdelah Central.”
Ms Drenkhahn’s current role embraces many different tasks and enjoys giving students an opportunity to try things and opens up new possibilities for future employment with new initiatives being planned.
Many local businesses in hospitality and tourism have difficulty in attracting new staff and this presents an opportunity for youth to embark on life long careers in this field and receive valuable training in the school environment.
Agency Part Two: Agent Duties and Obligations
by David Collins
Where you have appointed a person or entity as an ‘agent’ they must act in your best interests and within the delegated power and authority.
Generally, agents must follow instructions, avoid conflicts with the principal, use reasonable care and, skill and keep proper accounts.
If the appointment is written the agent may be entitled to be paid for the work done on your behalf. There are numerous factors to consider about whether an agent is entitled to be paid, including circumstances where an
agent loses that right.
Where an agent acts within the authority, the principal will usually give an indemnity in relation to legitimate expenses and liabilities. Such rights can entitle the agent to hold onto goods and chattels owned by the principal, but careful consideration is required before such rights should be asserted.
Disputes can arise about the duties and obligations of an agent; for further information please contact David Collins or Kristy Nunn from our dispute resolution and litigation team.

Redistribution of electoral districts comes into effect
NEW electoral district boundaries have come into effect for the electoral districts of Upper Hunter, Cessnock, Maitland, Myall Lakes and Port Stephens.
Changes made with the 2021 redistribution of NSW electoral districts will commence with the 2023 NSW State election.
The changes affect approximately 10,000 voters in the Hunter district and more than 770,000 people across NSW.
NSW Electoral Commissioner John Schmidt said where changes to electoral districts have been made, some voters would now be enrolled to vote in a different district even if their address had not changed.
“The NSW State election, on Saturday, 25 March 2023, will be the
first election where the new districts come into effect.
“Some electoral
districts have changed name, changed boundaries, been removed and split
into other districts or been newly created.
“Voters can find out if their district has changed by using the ‘Find my electorate’ tool on our website.
“I encourage voters to go to elections.nsw.gov.au and check, and update if needed, your details on the electoral roll before 6pm on Monday, 6 March.
“The district you are enrolled in at that time is
the district you are enrolled to vote in at the election.” Mr Schmidt said changes to districts were needed as people move in and out of electoral districts and in and out of New South Wales.
“The number of voters within each district should remain about the same across all districts.
“To ensure this, electoral boundaries are reviewed after every
M1 extension gets the go ahead
By Marian SAMPSON
IT’s the bottleneck we all hate to get stuck in and the bane of travellers every school holiday period.
The M1 ends and traffic snakes along an inadequate road beside the Hunter River.
Now one of the Hunter region’s biggest ever infrastructure projects is a step closer to construction with the M1 Pacific Motorway extension to Raymond Terrace given the official green light by the Australian and NSW governments.
The Australian Government has approved the project under national environment law, meaning works can begin.
The $2.1 billion project is jointly funded, with the
Australian Government contributing $1.68 billion and the NSW Government investing $420 million.
The project will deliver a 15-kilometre extension of the M1 Pacific Motorway from Black Hill to Raymond Terrace, including a 2.6-kilometre-long bridge over the New England Highway and Hunter River.
The surrounding network will also be upgraded, including the Hexham Straight Widening of around six kilometres of the Pacific Highway/Maitland Road to three lanes in each direction between the Newcastle Inner City Bypass at Sandgate and the New England Highway at Hexham Bridge.
Once complete, the
extension will create more efficient and reliable journeys by bypassing five sets of traffic lights, and removing about 25,000 vehicles a day from key congestion and merge points between Newcastle and Maitland.
This road will be a game changer for Port and Myall residents who commute to other areas for work.
The Australian and NSW governments have announced John Holland Gamuda Australia Joint
Venture as the contractors for the southern section of the project, covering a 10-kilometre section extending from Black Hill to Tomago, while Seymour Whyte Constructions will deliver the northern contract, completing the fivekilometre section that will bypass Heatherbrae.
The project is expected to be open to traffic in mid2028, weather permitting.
“This is an exciting step forward in this project, which is the last remaining bottleneck on the Pacific Highway between Sydney and Brisbane – and even better that it’s happened ahead of schedule,” Federal Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson said.
“I know Hunter locals who frequently travel between Maitland and Newcastle are very much looking forward to this extension, making for a safer and faster journey.
“I have been focused on this as a priority project since my election seven years ago, and it’s great to be working alongside the Australian and NSW Governments to make it a reality.”
Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King said, “The Australian Government is committed to working with all state and territory governments to deliver a safe and efficient road network across the nation.
second State election and the boundaries changed, if necessary, to keep voter numbers at similar levels across all districts.”
Maps of all electoral districts and information about the 2021 redistribution of electoral districts are available on the NSW Electoral Commission website at https://elections.nsw.gov. au/redistribution/aboutredistribution/overview.
“The M1 Pacific Motorway extension to Raymond Terrace will be a key link in this vital piece of the nation’s infrastructure.
“We know that extending the M1 will provide improved traffic flow and increased connectivity.
“Getting the official tick to move forward is exciting news for the community as we continue to build the infrastructure that communities in regional NSW deserve.”

Pilot program to improve pedestrian safety around childcare centres
MIDCOAST Council has joined forces with the Little Blue Dinosaur Foundation and the University of NSW on an innovative new pilot program which evaluates child pedestrian safety around local childcare centres.
Seven Local Government Areas in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria are taking part, including the MidCoast Local Government Area.
The official launch of the pilot program in the MidCoast took place at Faith Family Early Learning Centre in Taree on Thursday 2 March.
“We’re very supportive of the Foundation’s community education campaigns,” said MidCoast Council Mayor Claire Pontin.
“It’s great news that preschools in our region are taking part in this important initiative.”
Preschools involved in the research program have received books, posters, parent education flyers and signage.
The program encourages teachers to talk to children about road safety, especially the importance of holding their parent or carer’s hand on arriving and departing preschool and everywhere cars are.
The preschools will also provide information to parents through flyers and newsletters and will ask them to complete surveys to support the research.
The Little Blue Dinosaur Foundation is a not-forprofit organisation.
It was established in 2014 following the death of Michelle McLaughlin’s four-year-old son, Tom McLaughlin due to a pedestrian-motor vehicle crash whilst on a family holiday.
“Land transport crashes are the leading cause of death for Australian children aged one to fourteen,” Michelle McLaughlin said.
“Over the last decade from 2013 to January 2023, 590 children aged zero to sixteen years were involved
in a road fatality crash, with 22 percent of these fatalities occurring when the child was a pedestrian or a cyclist.
“On average, one child per week dies in Australia this way, and it’s entirely preventable.
“It is especially important for young children to hold their carer’s hand when around busy roads. “My family knows first-hand the heartbreaking reality of losing a child to road trauma,” Michelle said.
“Over the past nine years, the Little Blue Dinosaur Foundation has partnered with 68 LGAs in four Australian states with its signage and media campaigns.
“This pilot program is very important, and we thank MidCoast Council for being so proactive.”
A key aim of the Foundation is to educate parents about the perceptual limitations of children around roadways.
Those aged one to
ten years are especially vulnerable, and depend on parents to keep them safe from road trauma events.
Michelle encourages parents to be cautious when on holiday or in new environments, particularly around areas of high
Alliance of ocean users calls for end to land clearing
By Andrew VIVIAN
AN alliance of surfers, divers, recreational fishers and conservationists are calling for an end to land clearing in NSW, saying it too heavily impacts our coast and marine environment.
They say land clearing has increased thirteen-fold in NSW since 2016, when land clearing regulations were replaced with selfassessment codes.
The alliance has made a submission into the statutory review of the NSW Native
Vegetation Codes currently underway and demands the review takes into account the impact of clearing on the water quality of our coastal waters and marine life.
James Sherwood is an Australian Marine Conservation Society Marine Parks Campaigner and North Coast-based surfer and diver.
“NSW’s self-assessment codes, which give landholders the power to decide whether they are following the rules, has led to mass land clearing, threatening our freshwater and marine ecosystems, vital
systems that support both the health of humans and vulnerable marine life,” Mr Sherwood said.
“Land clearing often leads to more intensive farming practices that results in increased sediment and chemical runoff, which has a harmful effect on marine life.
“The proposed scope of the review is too narrow, missing an opportunity to explore the serious issue of poor water quality and the impact on our marine ecosystems.
“The review should be
an opportunity to look at the impacts of land clearing on water quality and improve regulation.”
Dane Wilmot, president of the Bateman Bay-based Nature Coast Marine Group and a recreational fisher, said our waterways are important breeding sites for aquatic animals and flush out into our oceans and marine parks, and special refuges for NSW’s vulnerable marine life and habitats.
“The millions of taxpayer funded dollars being spent on riparian revegetation and

Richard Nicholls, president of the Dive Industry Association of Australia and owner of Manly Dive Centre, said divers are concerned for the health of marine life.
“We also want to see an end to poor water quality, because runoff is bad for business.
“It muddies the water, creating bad visibility, impacting on our bottom line.”
Mr Nicholls said less people dive when the visibility is poor and it’s time to clean up our oceans for the future of human health and wellbeing, and the survival of vulnerable habitats and species, like seagrass and sea turtles.

Dear Jasminda,
DEAR News Of The Area,
AS a friend and former workmate of Kevin Carter
I have to endorse his concerns about MidCoast Council’s motion seeking to add parts of Bulga State Forest to Biriwal Bulga National Park.
Kevin and I well remember the exhaustive studies and deliberations of the late 1990’s which led to the signing of the Regional Forest Agreements which now apply to the management of all public forest land in NSW.
The agreements were drawn up to deliver three things; an expanded and permanent forest conservation estate, ecologically sustainable forest management and certainty of resource access and supply to industry.
As part of the agreements extensive areas of State Forest became unavailable for logging and were properly added to the National Park estate.
This of course led to a substantial restructure of the timber industry which had every reason to then expect guaranteed access to the greatly reduced volumes of available timber under the terms of the agreements.
Unfortunately it hasn’t happened that way.
People fiercely opposed to any logging in
native forests have simply refused to accept the legitimacy of the agreements and many newcomers to the issue appear to be completely unaware of their existence at all.
Individuals and communities involved with the industry have every right to feel exasperated by continued calls for governments to now renege on the agreements which took so much detailed professional time and effort to draw up.
Native hardwood logging Questions on offshore wind turbines
DEAR News Of The Area,
I HAVE a few questions to ask about the proposed turbines.
Is this another uncosted blowout disaster like the NBN, NDIS and Snowy Hydro 2?
1) Where will the turbines be manufactured, by whom and at what cost per unit?
2) Where will the materials used be sourced and what do they consist of?
3) Who will build them and do they have expertise in this area of construction?
Minor Pairs!

4 March
The second round of the “open gender” Pennants was held today with the First National sponsored Grade 5 side taking on Karuah at home.
It was, as expected a close contest with Tea Gardens losing two matches and having to rely on the margin of the third to win the Master Bard by just two shots.
The final score, Tea Gardens 57, Karuah 55.
The First National grade 6 side were not so lucky at New Lambton.
My sources tell me that they were out bowled by the opposition, losing the match 37-59.
Grade 7 travelled to Hexham with some trepidation as they had not played on a grass surface for three months and the pace of the green was expected to be slow.
Two teams struggled with their line and length early in the game and the early
4) What foundations are needed and at what depth. Cost of construction?
5) How many turbines are proposed and will their placement disrupt the shipping lanes both along the coast and into Newcastle Harbour.
6) Will they disrupt sea life and the migration of whales?
7) What is the cost of cables from the turbines to shore?
8) What is the cost of maintenance of the total system?
9) What is the expected life of a turbine out
indications were that they were in for a hiding.
It was late in the game that Tea Gardens hit the front with two teams winning and the third team mounting a huge comeback.
Lynda Richards was in that team and played an outstanding game to be voted the Most Valuable Player.
Well done, Lynda!
Grade 7 won the Board 67-61.
All grades have now experienced one win and one loss each.
Next week, Grade 5 play away at Beresfield, Grade 6 play Karuah at home and Grade 7 are also home to East Maitland.
5 March
The final of the Club Championship Minor Pairs was played today with the team of John Moore and Roman Bondaruk playing Tony Butler and Rick Islaub.
Rick and Tony established an early lead but at the halfway mark only one shot separated the two teams.
It was a game dominated by narrow side play and longer than normal ends.
One had the feeling that if the play had been a little more creative and varied the outcome may have been different.
In the second half, John and Roman were playing more consistently and their experience started to show with some nice precision bowling.
They claimed the title with a 9-shot margin
Provided native forest logging is being properly planned and managed the spirit and intention of the Regional Forest Agreements should be observed.
I BOUGHT a puppy to keep my dog amused so I could work from home more easily, but instead it has created further chaos, with both of them playbrawling at all hours. Help.
Helena P.
Dear Helena,
WHILE reading your desperate cry for help I envisaged you trying to pick up 500 mauled cotton buds and the contents of a disemboweled teddy bear while your puppy ran between your legs before knocking over the side table (breaking a mug filled with cold tea because you haven't had a chance to drink it, let alone do any of your work, simultaneously saturating your warranty-void-due-to-water-damage laptop).
People mistakenly buy pups because they see adorable puppy photos on social media, but the common denominator is that people photograph puppies when they are asleep (which is also the only time they stay still).
at sea?
10) What are you going to do with the turbine when it finally expires?
11) Most importantly, what is the timeline to completion?
12) Will there be a penalty clause if construction passes an agreed completion date?
Have you considered that nuclear energy might be less expensive, more efficient, land based and connect into the existing poles and wires?
Kind regards, David BRUCE, Tea Gardens.
25-16. Congratulations to them, runners-up, Rick, and Tony and indeed all those that participated.
In other news.
Nominations are being called for the Club Championship Minor Singles with the first game scheduled for 29 March.
All new players are encouraged to enter this event as the experience gained will be invaluable.
Puppies have the ability to morph from adorable fluffballs to Mephistopheles in a matter of seconds. They can cause cyclonic levels of destruction with their razor-sharp puppy teeth, ravenous appetites and boundless energy.
Everything is fair game to a puppy, including you, Helena. As for your other dog, it has no doubt become collateral damage as they fight over your attention and battle for the position of top dog in the pack.
Now, Helena, I need to let you in on a secret that the puppy doesn't want you to know. You are the head of the pack, not the five-kilo Tasmanian devil you've let into your home, your heart and probably your bed. You need to set some parameters. Time out is an effective strategy on toddlers and it also works on dogs.
Separate the dogs when they are becoming too chaotic, reward positive behaviour with kind words and treats, wear them out with a long morning walk, and remember that this too shall pass (in about four years).

THE Myall Masters Swimming Carnival, which has become quite a highlight of the NSW Masters Calendar, was held on Saturday 11 February 2023.
The local Masters Club successfully hosted their ninth annual Masters swimming meet, with 23 clubs and 134 competitors.
Myall Masters fielded a team of 25 swimmers who all performed strongly, the club winning the carnival convincingly with 836 points.
Second place went to Port Macquarie with 501 points and Warringah Club came in third with 412 points.
“The event was organised with the support of approximately 30 eager volunteers from our club and 20 volunteer officials from a variety of masters clubs,” said Chris Dunning, Myall Masters.
“The YMCA staff were also extremely supportive and willing to be of assistance, while our local Lions Club supplied the BBQ at the

end of the day.
“These combined efforts resulted in a fantastic and outstanding day.
“Although all upgrades to Tea Gardens Pool by MidCoast Council could not be completed by the carnival date, our willing volunteers and pool staff, with their ‘can do’
attitude helped contribute to the success of the day.”
Club members Sharon Taylor, Linda Stubbs, Jo Collins, Luke Rochester and Leon Bobako were outstanding in their swims, all winning their respective age groups.
Steve Bergan’s individual effort in his 50m Breaststroke was loudly cheered home by the whole Myall Masters team which was led by our resident announcer Rhonda Bobako.
“A special mention needs to be made of Jackie Bower.
“Jackie was certainly one of the heroes of the Myall Masters Team.
“She competed in her first Masters Meet, performed her best times and also volunteered to enter one of our top relay teams as a lastminute replacement.
“The team of Cheryl Rose, Linda Stubbs, Jackie Forsyth and Jackie Bower went on to win their event by a nine hundredth of a second!,” Chris said.
With complimentary catering to competitors, officials and spectators alike, Myall Masters high standard of hospitality and support to other clubs was again demonstrated and well received.
“A big thank you to members who supplied slices and cakes and to our friends from the Lions Club who manned the delicious barbeque.
“Myall Masters ethos of fun, fitness and friendship was once again demonstrated in the whole comradery of this special day!”

FRIDAY ENDEAVOUR
ABC, 8.30pm
Detective Endeavour Morse (Shaun Evans, pictured) still has plenty of loose ends to tie up as this Inspector Morse prequel series comes to a rapid close. In tonight’s penultimate episode of the final season, Endeavour suspects a connection between a woman’s disappearance and her past employer. However, a pressing missing persons case demands his attention as it involves a notable artist, whose work adorns the covers of a series of paperback mysteries. Regular viewers should enjoy some emotional moments as it’s also revealed how Morse came to be estranged from his crime-solving partner Fred Thursday (Roger Allam).

Based on H.E. Bates’s 1958 novel The Darling Buds of May, this cosy series set in a quaint Kent village is the perfect way to ease into a relaxing Saturday evening. Season two sees much-loved Ma and Pop Larkin (Joanna Scanlan and Bradley Walsh) at war with their posh new neighbours Pinkie and Cuthbert Jerebohm (Morgana Robinson and Julian Rhind Tutt, both pictured). Meanwhile, there’s a new romance on the horizon for Primrose (Lydia Page). Fans of the show will notice the Larkins’ eldest daughter Mariette looks very different this season –newcomer Joelle Rae has replaced Sabrina Bartlett in the role after the Bridgerton star abruptly left the series.
