mentally and physically healthy.
Uniting/Becoming U Community Impact Strategy Lead Barry Higgins said the program has been going for four years and he is stoked about the growing recognition the team is getting for the work they are doing.
“Becoming U is really about going into the Nambucca community and spending time there, not rushing in, not coming in with a pre-organised project, and really letting that community work alongside us and co-design projects with them, for them.
“Some of the projects which
have been co-designed include digital storytelling, which is all about highlighting self-belief and confidence in young people, we also do sport programs, which are all about building new skills and developing relationships with other young people, plus we have Opportunity U grants which are aimed at helping remove those financial hurdles for young people, and we have mentoring projects,’’ said Barry.
With its success in Nambucca, Becoming U has branched out into Toormina and has been exploring that community for the past couple of months thanks to its Community
Connector Jess Miller.
“Through Jess’ work, so far we have managed to connect with Toormina High School and are working on establishing key relationships and exploring some interesting projects which we can use to support young people within that area.
“This is just the beginning and we look forward to more success for our young people.
“We share this honour with the young people, parents, teachers, school staff, mentors and organisations who have all played a part in Becoming U's journey so far.”
The NSW Youth Work Awards
are hosted by Youth Action NSW, the peak body representing young people and the services supporting them in NSW.
They advocate for positive change on issues affecting these groups.
Youth Action founded the NSW Youth Work Awards in 2013 to create an annual celebration of the exceptional work of youth services and youth workers across NSW.
The winner will be announced at the Awards ceremony on Thursday, 17 November at the Australian Theatre for Young People, Dawes Point, Sydney.

Ignite MNC tackles important issues for Mid North Coast
‘Ignite MNC’, on Wednesday, November 2.
They were there to learn, connect, and discuss issues around the three main themes of the conference: Housing, Circular Economy, and Workforce.
Kerry Grace, CEO of RDAMNC said, “Ignite is an important event on the Mid North Coast annual calendar and we were thrilled to return to a face-to-face format this year.”
Housing was a key theme of Ignite this year, and issues around accessible and affordable housing were discussed by housing industry experts.
The housing keynote speaker, Ian Ugarte, advocated strongly for NSW Local Government planning controls to be changed, aligning with other states to allow multiple dwellings in
single residences.
“With the right councils being brave in their decisions about sharing control of approvals, we can produce one million new front doors in the next year,” Mr Ugarte said.
The Circular Economy was another key theme explored by the symposium, with the results of local research shared with Ignite participants.
Opportunities and barriers to a more circular economy on the Mid North Coast were explored by the keynote speaker and panellists.
Waste consultant Keiran Travers said, “In the short term the region could make better use of recycled material, particular organic waste (food and garden waste) by either composting at home or by using processed organic waste in infrastructure or
rehabilitation projects.”
Workforce was the third theme for Ignite this year, with conference speakers discussing the new world of work and how to navigate blended workplaces, as
well as local best practice employers sharing innovative ideas and techniques.
Ms Grace said, “Our region has faced down some incredible challenges over the past few years, and with
more disruptions ahead of us, an opportunity such as Ignite which brings people together to talk about things that matter deeply to the region is invaluable.”
More information about the themes discussed at Ignite MNC 2022 can be

Kim Churchill and Jason Lowe take Bowraville on an acoustic adventure
By Mick BIRTLES
LAST Friday at the Bowraville Theatre an appreciative audience was taken on an unforgettable acoustic adventure when two of the nation's most impassioned singer/ songwriter/instrumentalists, Kim Churchill and Jason Lowe took to the stage.
As Kim Churchill’s special guest, Jason Lowe performed first and had the capacity crowd mesmerised by every note he played on guitar, lap guitar and piano.
Jason’s intriguing explanations of the motivation behind each song added to the audience experience, particularly his tale of a chance meeting with Joni Mitchel in the Canadian wilderness and the profound effect meeting one of his idols had on his creativity.
When Kim Churchill joined Jason on stage to play harmonica it set a theme that permeated through-out the evening and the love and mutual respect these artists have for each other seemed to spill over into the atmosphere of the evening, making the gig even more special.
By the time patrons took their seats for the second act the connection with the irresistibly likeable Kim Churchill was well established and a respectfully appreciative audience were focused intently on every word and chord only to explode with applause at the end of each song.
Kim’s peaceful vibe and his obvious
gratitude toward his own life and circumstances comes through in his music and lyrics, making it impossible not to smile with him during the performance.
His ability to strip back his tracks like ‘Second Hand Car’ and ‘Please Come Home’ on stage and somehow make them sound just as luscious as the studio version is indeed a special gift.
Almost as if providing a reward for their
attentiveness, Kim Churchill cheekily invited everyone to dance and finished the set with some powerful rocking blues that rose to another level when Jason Lowe cut in with his slide guitar.
This concert is the second of six events at the Bowraville Theatre presented by Archive Mid North Coast, who’s program is designed to refresh and liven up the theatre, to provide opportunities for touring and local musicians
and to bring accessible and inclusive music events to this regional community.
Archive Mid North Coast’s Sara-Jayne Prince told News Of The Area, “We will soon be announcing the third event on the program and we are sure audiences will continue to enjoy the amazing performances here in the beautiful Bowraville Theatre.”

Paco Lara heads to the Mid North Coast
By Mick BIRTLES
THE cultural diversity of the Nambucca Valley is about to take another step forward this month when the Bowraville Theatre presents the virtuoso Spanish flamenco guitarist Paco Lara.
q
Bringing the soul and spirit of Spanish flamenco to regional audiences, Paco Lara will inspire and capture the imagination of Australian audiences with this tour to launch his new album, Duende.
Duende is a repertoire
of original compositions Lara has produced and the event will be a stunning live performance of Flamenco with a fusion of music, song and dance with his talented ensemble.
Paco Lara migrated to Australia in 2017 from his
home in Jerez in Southern Spain, the heartland of flamenco.
He has toured internationally alongside some of the best artists and maestro legends of flamenco in Spain and is the vanguard and foremost musician of contemporary flamenco fusion in Australia.
Paco Lara has enjoyed recent successes at the Sydney Opera House, at the Adelaide Guitar Festival and has toured this year with the immensely popular Andalusian Guitar Show.

Graham Howle named Songwriter of the Year
By Mick BIRTLES
THE Nambucca Valley continues to cement its reputation as a haven for creatives following last week’s announcement by the Australian Songwriters Association (ASA) that Bowraville’s Graham Howle was the songwriter of the year in the Australia category.
In an impressive field of entries the esteemed judging panel singled out Graham’s thumping anthem ‘I am Iron, I am Steel’ from 30 finalists to win the prestigious award.
When News Of The Area asked Graham what it felt
like to have won he said, “I thought that I was in with a bit of a chance however was not convinced I would pull off the top gong in such a competitive field.
“When my name was announced it was very exciting and I must say that it felt great.”
The song is about the infamous bushranger Ned Kelly and when asked what inspired him to write the song Graham said, “Ned always got my attention and as an adult, I considered what life would have been like for him in those days.
“During the shootout at Glenrowan Ned Kelly left the building he was in on two
occasions but came back to continue the fight.
“When he came back in wearing his armour he was heard to yell 'I am Iron, your bullets cannot hurt me’ which inspired the theme of the song.”
Graham said it was one of the most complex songs he had ever written.
“It took me some time to get it just how I wanted it.
“I am also proud of the song as it is over five minutes long in a world of songs between two and a half and three and a half minutes.
“So to hold a listener for that long it had to be good.”
Fans of Graham Howle will notice the song also required him to push his boundaries vocally and the power in his voice on this song reaches new territory
for him.
Graham told News Of The Area, “I would now like to delve into co-writing to take my songwriting to the new levels through collaboration.”
This was not the only award Graham picked up at the ASA Awards.
In the Comedy Novelty Category his song ‘James Squire’ was awarded first place, his song ‘Upriver Cowboys’ was in the top 10 in the Country Music Category, in the Folk Acoustic Category ‘She’s my Change of Scenery’ was awarded third place and his song Maria was also given exceptional merit by the judging panel.

Fishermans Reach author shares poetry anthology
FISHERMANS Reach poet and News Of The Area contributor reporter Jen Hetherington
travelled to Port Macquarie Library on October 28 for an author visit as part of the Mid North Coast Library Service’s Stories Behind the Storyteller series.
Jen’s collection of poetry, ‘Between Coastal Rocks and Softer Places’, was the topic of discussion at the event.
“Though being a poet was not an intentional aim, I started writing, taking notes in a journal as a young
teenager,” Jen said.
“Over many years, the collection of notebooks grew and were very useful resources during my creative writing degree.
“It was these studies that really sparked my poetry enthusiasm,” she said.
“My writing, be it poetry, creative fiction or essay, is generally initiated from personal introspection, though reactions to broader societal events and interactions are a great stimulus that require
a different approach to sensitivity and development.”
‘Between Coastal Rocks and Softer Places’ was inspired by time Jen spent travelling, and the joy of returning to the coastal districts where she grew up.
“Also, and maybe more importantly, I needed to fulfil a promise to my dear Mother who has since passed away,” Jen said.
From her work, Jen said readers could expect “a degree of unapologetic sentimentality, some grief, some whimsey, also reflected in my illustrations, a sonnet or two and one solitary haiku”.
With writing often a pursuit enjoyed in solitude, Jen said the process of sharing her works with the public, in events such as her author visits, was initially quite daunting.
“The reading events and author talks have proven to be mutually beneficial.
“It’s truly reassuring to interact face-to-face with fellow poetry readers and writers.”
Like many artists and creatives, Jen found the pandemic brought with it both challenges and opportunities as she worked towards finalising her poetry anthology for publication.
“In terms of locating and establishing a supportive relationship with my fantastic independent publisher/editor, Zac from ‘RoseyRavelston’, the time frame (for publication) of about two years was both hindered and helped by the pandemic lockdowns.
“The publishing process epitomised the deep dive into the world of publishing that I craved, not without trepidation … but knowledge begets confidence and confidence begets results.
“Utilising my illustration skills added a new dimension to the works and I now find that my drawings have often
become a catalyst for the words.”
Now a regular contributor to News Of The Area’s weekly Nambucca Valley edition, Jen is engaging with the community in Stuarts Point, Fishermans Reach, Scotts Head and surrounds to bring the area’s stories to life.
Jen holds a degree in Creative Writing and Screen Studies from Griffith University and has a second book of poetry due for publication in early 2023, which includes ‘Cross Words’, the winner of the 2022 Welsh Poetry Competition.

A Fundraiser With A Difference
By Mick BIRTLES
HOLD onto your sequined hats Nambucca Valley, there is a fundraiser with a difference coming to town
that has everybody talking.
Melbourne’s leading drag queen, Abril LaTrene, is coming to town and will be hosting a hilariously entertaining night of Drag
Bingo at the Golden Sands Tavern on the evening of Thursday, 17 November to raise funds in support of Wildlife Information Rescue and Education Service Mid North Coast (WIRES MNC).
Abril LaTrene is an international host, MC and performer, having graced stages and venues in Thailand, Bali, New Zealand and the United States.
A little closer to home, Abril has performed in nearly every state in Australia and taken up residencies in venues both in Queensland and Victoria.
When News Of The Area asked Abril LaTrene what Drag Bingo was all about, she said, “It is a crazy night of bingo that’s a bit cheeky, a bit raucous, often inappropriate and definitely adults only with
a comedy spin on the traditional bingo.
“There will be some musical rounds of bingo and lots of laughs are guaranteed on what will be a great night out.”
Originally intended to take place in the Wahoo Lounge at the Golden Sands Tavern, demand for tickets has been so high that the event will now take place in the extended bistro area of the tavern in order to enable more people to come along.
Many local businesses are getting behind WIRES MNC through generous donations meaning winners will take home great prizes on the night.
Tickets are only $11:50 with a whopping $10 from each ticket going to WIRES MNC.

By Jen HETHERINGTON
MORNINGS at Grassy Head’s Painted Blue Coffee Roasters are lively and aromatic, regardless of their recent accolades, which include winning ‘The Golden Bean 2022 - Champion Espresso and Champion Organic’, categories judged within Australasia.

The company provides products to many local outlets and individuals with a growing ethos, including the potential for increased local employment opportunities.
Charelle emphasised that, “As a roasting company with insights, experience and exposure to industry practices we plan to be a catalyst to
SLADE LAWN SERVICES COMES TO NAMBUCCA VALLEY
MATTHEW SLADE grew up in the Nambucca Valley and it has been quite a while since he delivered a pizza or served petrol form to old BP. While Matt was away, he pursued several possible careers and finally settled on lawn services and garden maintenance. While living at Wollongong he established “SLADE LAWN SERVICES”. Impossibly high rentals and equally high costs of running a business in the Illawarra convinced Matt to move back to the Valley and bring his business and his family (wife and four kids including two babies). Grandparents Lynne and John are delighted.
Matt has invested heavily in the latest “cutting edge” lawncare equipment including a Scag-standon mowing machine that can do almost anything. There are only a few of these machines in the Valley and are imported along with rave reviews from the USA at a cost of $16,000.
Matt’s services include regular mowing contracts, one-off arrangements, pressure cleaning, weed control, hedging, rubbish removal and odd jobs. His business is fully legitimate, insured and registered having been established through the Federal Government NEIS Scheme. His services are approved by the Dept. of Veteran’s affairs and the NDIS. One local Real- Estate agent has already been in touch.
Matt believes that this summer climate will be a busy time for him and his colleagues in the industry and there may be difficulties arranging regular lawn and garden care. For an honest and realistic quote call 0402461391, or on-line contacts:

WHEN a theatrical production is locally written, produced, directed, has a local cast and sells out its three dates weeks in advance, we can’t help but sit up and take notice.
On Saturday night the final performance of Yours Sincerely, presented by The Wyz Wimmin & Friends, was on stage at the Nambucca Heads Bowling Club and
News Of The Area was there to see what all the fuss was about.
The first two performances of Yours Sincerely were put on in late October at the Utungun Hall and South Arm Hall consecutively in line with the Wyz Wimmin’s intent to take live theatre to the people.
All three performances were preceded by a meal and monies raised supported the
Painted Blue Coffee Grinders Garner Fresh Awards
Utungun and South Arms Halls for the first two shows and the Bowling Club show proceeds went to the We’re Here in the Nambucca Valley Initiative with cast and crew giving their time and skills free of charge.
Yours Sincerely deals with a range of mature themes through a collection of letters, some fantasy and some true, that are read by actors being completely in character.
We can report the Wyz Wimmin & Friends kept their promise and they took a spellbound audience of 110 guests at the Nambucca Heads Bowling Club on a ride which had them laughing, gasping, stunned to silence and wiping tears away all in the space of two hours.
Kathleen Crawley, Anne Joyce, who also directed, Helen Kirkpatrick, Frederick Millard and Anama Tesser were all utterly convincing on stage and quick study of their respective theatrical backgrounds explains why they were able to deliver such rich performances.
confronted.
When Kathleen reappeared in the second act as a political staffer wronged by her greedy boss she was once again so plausible it was hard to accept it was the same actor.
FROM Page 8
Wyz Wimmin & Friends co-founder and script writer Carrolline Rhodes told News Of The Area, “The production promises to take the audience on a journey across the spectrum of emotions.”
While the thought of actors stepping up to a lectern to deliver words from a page does not sound particularly dynamic, in reality the dramatic effect achieved through meticulously crafted dialogue and totally convincing acting was extraordinary.
Actors Laurel Astle,
While every interpretation on the evening was riveting, it was the character change agility of Kathleen Crawley that is stuck in the mind of this reviewer.
Her portrayal of a young woman with mental health issues in a piece called Gran’s Bible was so credible the audience actually felt
Yours Sincerely was a triumph, not just for the Wyz Wimmin & Friends but for everyone with an interest in the performing arts.
Selling out its three performances is the Nambucca Valley’s way of screaming out for more live theatre.
It is tantalising to consider what the Wyz Wimmin & Friends will come up with next.

Scotts Head Community Gardens Welcome You
By Jen HETHERINGTON
MONDAY, 7 November saw a frenzy of volunteer workers eager to tidy up the garden plots at the Scotts Head Community Gardens in readiness for new plantings.
With storm clouds rolling in from the east, the crew were busy mowing, weeding, extracting spent plants for composting and seed saving, and digging trenches to accommodate a rudimentary watering system in order to utilise the new water tank.
Volunteer George Driussi explained to NOTA, “Establishing the gardens was funded by a community grant and with the basic plots and storage shed installed, it was time to add the water tank which, with the kind approval of our neighbour, we are able collect roof runoff from both sheds, so it’s not going directly to the storm water drains.”
With the trench dug and pipes laid, tap fittings were installed in strategic locations for easier access to the vital water supply.
The morning's labour, using many tools sourced from local waste stations, was not complete till fresh garden soil was wheelbarrowed in to top up the plots.
Elizabeth Driussi said the garden’s volunteers want “to create a welcoming, active, social place for all the community to be involved in”.
If you need herbs or produce from the garden, please carefully pick what you need, however you are encouraged to leave a donation to help with future plantings and operational costs.
As the garden’s welcome signage states, ‘Scotts Head Gardeners Welcome You’.

Rotary Club extends hand of friendship to Fijian guests
MEMBERS of the Rotary Club of Nambucca Valley are part of many worthy projects in our community, and have recently spent time welcoming newly arrived Fijian residents to Nambucca Heads.
At an afternoon tea a fortnight ago, Nambucca Rotarians and friends met with the Fijians to form connections and then buddy up to assist them to integrate into the valley’s community.
The nineteen Fijians have recently started work as Care Service Employees with NVC Group, working in Riverside Gardens and Autumn Lodge aged care homes to support local elderly residents.
They have been employed through the Australian Government’s Pacific Australia Labour Mobility scheme, a program designed to address labour shortages in regional areas.

Praise for poultry club founders
By Andrea FERRARI
RECOGNISING over 47 years of commitment to the Bellinger River District Poultry Club, three founding members have been celebrated and honoured.
Des Taylor, Hilton Lovering and Ted Vaughan were lauded at a presentation attended by a small group of members who gathered at Diggers Tavern in Bellingen.
“The Poultry Club was reformed on 6 May 1975 and at that meeting Des, Hilton and Ted were present,” Secretary for Bellinger River District Poultry Club, Peter Paff, told News Of The Area.
“All of these gentlemen still perform important functions in the club and we felt that it was time that their commitment was recognised.
“They have each held various positions over those 47-plus years, Des having been President for thirteen years and Hilton has now served as President for 30 years.
“Ted is currently Chief Steward also having served in many roles such as Secretary for an extended period.”
The club presented all three with Foundation Member bars and Life Membership, an honour which
Peter said was “well and truly deserved and way overdue”.
The club members recognised that their commitment would not have been possible without the support of their wives.
They acknowledged the
Talking about the organisation, Peter Paff said, “The Poultry Club is many things.
“It is there to raise awareness of the joy of keeping poultry, support its members, to encourage young and not-so-young people
to discover a rewarding hobby.
“It is also a great way to teach children the responsibility of looking after a pet with the side benefit of fresh eggs for breakfast.
“Many of the breeds kept are rare and breeders work hard to maintain each breed’s integrity.”
The Bellingen club runs the Annual Poultry Section of the local Agricultural Show, which is held in May each year.
It also conducts its own Club Show which is traditionally held on the last Sunday in May.
These shows bring exhibitors from up and down the coast and over the range.
“The last show we had exhibitors came from as far away as Somersby and Muswellbrook and up to Grafton, the shed was full to capacity with 575 birds.
“Both shows have junior sections and we encourage kids to enter their birds.”
Members of the club are often seen giving tips on the best way to look after the chickens and how to keep them healthy.
On the first Saturday of every month Bellinger River District Poultry Club holds a poultry market at Bellingen Showground and people are welcome to bring excess poultry along for sale.
The club charges a small fee for birds entered at this market.

local training and Mission Australia’s local Transition to Work (TtW) team.
“It’s been amazing starting work at Blue Gum Café in Macksville,” Tristan said.
“Everybody has been so supportive, and I love making coffees and talking with customers.
“It feels great to be working.”
Tristan was supported into work through Mission Australia’s Transition to Work team.
Jess Harpley, TtW’s Youth Employment Specialist, supported him to explore career pathways and local opportunities. NV College’s Barista Essentials course was discussed and identified as a positive pathway for Tristan.
Delivered by NV College, Barista Essentials is part of the NSW Government Department of Education’s Summer Skills campaign, which aims to help young people gain employment over the summer.
Tristan completed this feefree, four-day course in September and was then offered a hospitality traineeship through NVC Group, which runs Blue Gum and Zen cafés in Macksville and Riverside Gardens café in Nambucca Heads.
NV College General Manager Karen Busby welcomed this
outcome and said it was the goal of NV College to provide opportunities for locals.
“While care training is our college’s speciality, I’m pleased Barista Essentials is providing local youth with the skills and confidence to gain a job,” Ms Busby said.
“NVC Group are always seeking to hire good hotel service workers and carers to support our community’s elderly people, so employment with our community-owned organisation is often possible after students complete their training.”
If you’re a school leaver aged 15-24 and are unsure of your employment or education pathway, Mission Australia’s TtW team may
be able to help.
“We support early school leavers and our goal is to connect local young people to employers, education or community,” Transition to Work Program Manager Nicole Baade said.
“TtW is a rewarding and helpful program.
“This assistance is tailored to a young person’s individual needs.
“Collaborating with NVC Group has been a great experience for all parties, where training and employment opportunities have been created; making a positive impact in the lives of local young people.”
The next fee-free Summer Skills courses at NV College in Macksville start this month (November) and include barista training and care ready training.

CWA Macksville Hosts Cooking Tips Day
By Jen HETHERINGTON
THE Macksville CWA Branch hosted its latest group event on Sunday 6 November, titled the ‘How to Do Day’.
Directly aimed at offering tips to assist members with kitchen and baking skills, Vivianne Beaumont, Denise Hawdon, Rhonda Merchant and Barbara Reichart, all accomplished judges, led the gathering with a display of baked and bottled goods acknowledging the varied features of quality and presentation.
As tastings and discussions were underway regarding flavour, ingredients, and the importance
of using correct vessels and cookware, particularly regarding the seasonal baking of fruit cakes, those in attendance were keen to share and learn more.
Rhonda Merchant, Group President, along with the presentation panel, greeted all newcomers and said, “All our members are welcome to compete, and progress to positions as judges and stewards within local and state-wide cookery competitions.”
Merrie Hunt from Macksville CWA, the instigator of this innovative event commented, “We had a fantastic rollup of engaged and enthusiastic women.”
With jams, chutneys, pickles
and relishes also sampled, rules for success and reasons for failure were strongly interrogated, noting that ‘tried and true’ methods still prevail, but not without recognising contemporary advances in equipment, ingredient qualities and utilisation of local produce.
“My idea for introducing this type of session came from meeting with a few younger members, and prospective members at a recent regional show, who said they wanted to know more about the judging process,” explained Merrie.
An evening branch of the Nambucca Valley CWA is in the proposal stages for interested women who are unable to participate in daytime meetings and events.

Macksville Stingers junior to represent Australia in India
By Aiden BURGESS
AIDEN Laird is headed on a tour of India to represent Australia.
The Macksville Stingers junior has been selected to the Australian Youth Men’s Futsal team that will tour India in April next year.
The seventeen-year old’s selection to the junior national team came on the back of standout performances as a goalkeeper at the recent National Schools Championships in Brisbane.
His performances in goal saw named as an All Star as one of the top players at the championships.
Laird and the Australian team will
take on teams from various Indian cities such as Delhi and Mumbai.
His Australian selection took him by surprise.
“I honestly couldn’t believe it, as there were so many other good goalkeepers that I played against,” he said.
“It was a big surprise as I’ve only started playing three years ago.”
The young goalkeeper was looking forward to the Indian tour for a number of reasons.
“I hope to get my skills up a lot more, and potentially make the Australian senior team,” he said.
“Just the experience of it, and we’re going to the Taj Mahal.
“Just experiencing a different culture and the experience of playing overseas and playing for Australia.”
Having played goalkeeper in both football and futsal, he explained how he came to become a shot stopper in both sports.
“I started at centre back for the Macksville Stingers in juniors, and they didn’t have a keeper so I put my hand up,” he said.
“It’s come naturally to me playing goalie in futsal, and I think the position is more important in futsal because if there wasn’t a good goalie the scores would be so high, and the ball is always coming at you.”

Macksville Country Club Mens Bowls
By Mark COLEMAN
G'DAY bowlers,
This week's social bowls on Thursday saw a moderate turn out on the greens, with some good Bowls played.
The winners were found by the draw of a card determining that the biggest winning margin was the winner, the lucky Bowlers being Phil ‘Rocker’ Rose, Garry ‘outa’
Towner and Ken ‘Skinno’ Ainsworth (all the way from Grafton).
Tuesday saw a good turn out of bowlers, for the over 50s, with a full green enjoying the day.
Club Championships.
Sunday saw two games of singles played with Phil Rose overcoming Kevin Garner and Ken Ainsworth overpowering Peter ‘Nobby’ Carlow (I might have to look at getting a mechanical arm).
The great bowls will continue again on Sunday with more singles action.
Andrew Shearer v Ken Ainsworth and Peter Fox v Cliff Yager.
Come down and watch, they should be two great games.
The next big event on the calendar will be nominations for the open gender pennant, sheet is on the board.
Short and sweet this week, good bowling all.

Macksville Country Club Ladies Bowls Report
By Gladys GREEN
OUR Macksville ladies entered a team in the Grade 3 pennants which was played late July and August.
A team consists of two sides of four players, with Ruth Flarrety, Kaye Wood, Gail Griffiths and Carol Turner on one side and Thelma Scott, Judy Walker, Karen Liddell and Janet Poletti on the other.
Elwyn Ainsworth was reserve, filling in for three games.
Barbara McBride was our fantastic manager.
As there were only four teams in our grade the season was played reasonably quickly. The first three games were played at home
defeating Stuarts Point (45-24), Park Beach (47-35) ,and Woolgoolga 5626.
Then in the return away game we beat Stuarts Point 32-27 in a very close game.
At Park Beach we went down 4425 in very tricky windy conditions.
The last game at Woolgoolga was a must win to progress through to the regional play-offs, unfortunately just falling short 47-41.
Well done to our ladies.
We have had a number of new bowlers join us lately and they are enjoying playing each week.
New bowlers are welcome to join us on Wednesday Mornings at 8.30 am for a 9am start.
Our ladies will be holding a street stall down in the town on Thursday, December 1 outside the newsagent.

Bowls Galore: District, Championships and Twilight Bowls at Nambucca
By Nerida BLACKFORD
IT’S been a whirlwind month or so for the Nambucca Heads Ladies’ Bowls Club.
We have hosted and been involved in a variety of bowls events and seen some great success for some of our longest and newest bowlers, which has been wonderful for our club.
The end of October saw the Mid North Coast District State Open and Seniors Championships at our greens.
Recent upgrades to our greens meant it was the obvious choice after rainy conditions, and the greens were magnificent.
No time was lost, and a very high standard of bowls was played by teams from Woolgoolga, Park Beach, Coffs Harbour, Sawtell, Stuarts Point and Macksville.
In the Open Division, first time competitors Nerida Blackford and Teresa Meehan surprised themselves by getting a win in their first game against Park Beach, but went down in their second round to eventual runners up, also from P.B.
A terrific crowd supported their games and then went on to loudly cheer for two of the legends of our club.
Gloria Richardson and Elaine Fleming played in the Seniors Division and played some of the best bowls seen by ladies at our club!
After a very close semi-final game, that had all of the crowd very excited, and the ladies went on to defeat
Woolgoolga in a comfortable game in the final.
Starting with some multiple scores in the first six ends, the game became very tight, with the next nine
ends seeing each team score only 1.
In the end Elaine and Gloria only allowed Woolgoolga to win eight ends by 1, eventually winning 20-8.
It was an exhausting couple of days playing in heat, and our champs did remarkably well to keep their concentration and level of play at a high standard.
It was hard to tell in the end who was more excited - our teamor all their supporters.
The next event Nambucca was represented in was the MNC District State Triples, held at South West Rocks.
This time Elaine teamed up with Eliza Brown as lead and Margaret
Flagg as second.
The team played well and won 24-23 against Park Beach in their first game but was then defeated by SWR 24-19.
That team went on to be runners up to Coffs Ex in the Open Division.
In the Seniors field, Gloria joined Nerida Blackford as lead and Pat Fletcher as second.
In their first afternoon game Nambucca had a comfortable win against Woolgoolga 30-18.
The next day we returned, having to play in the craziest gale force winds all day.
We won the semi final game against a strong team from Sawtell.
Some ends saw bowls stretching right across the rink having been blown completely off course by the wind!
The wind didn’t abate for the finals match against SWR.
Even the home team had bowls going everywhere, and it was a battle to get close to the jack. SWR were winners on the day, beating us 30-20 after coming back from being behind in the first half of the game.
Club Triples Championships
We have now completed the semi finals of our club Triples Championships.
Last week’s games had a keen group of supporters clapping every bowl as each player drew to the

The Mid North Coast Vets played a Medley Stableford on Tuesday –some early showers cleared to a fine day, we still hosted 75 players. Ross Donnelly (10) was the winner of Division 1 (0 to 18) with 41 points from Jeffrey Porter (17) with 40 points, from Cos Osland (16) 37 and Richard Harrison (15) 36.
In Division 2 (19 to 45), John Ward (229) scored 39 points to win from Eric Wise (33) and Barry Ellis (21) with 38 points and Terry Noble (22) with 36 points. The Ball Rundown to 32 points.
NTP’s went to Col Osland on 5 and 18, Houston (Ray) Baker on 8 and Mary Ann Perry on 13.
On Wednesday Morann Paterson and Gillian Anderson sponsored the Women’s ‘Friendship Day’ American Foursomes.
In a very close contest, the winners were Sue Brooks and Coral McCann 70.12, from Donna Easey and Sue Seymour 70.25, and Chris Clarke & Cheryl Gilmour 71.0.

jack or knocked out competitors’ bowls in good positions.
The standard of play by the teams was wonderful.
After a slow start, the team of Margaret Flagg, Marg Duffus and Kerrie Dale won 14 shots in the last three ends, to defeat Gloria Richardson, Manor Smith and Ann Marie Johnson 23-13.
On the next rink, a big tussle was happening between Kim Porter, Sandra Seckold and Teresa Meehan against Elaine Flemming, Rosemary Dugdale and Deb Mann.
The game went from 8-0, to 8-8 by the seventh end.
The lead changed over the next five ends, until Kim’s team got ahead, and went on to win 22-15.
The final will be played next Tuesday and should be another great game, so come on down to watch!
Twilight Bowls
Our club has resumed Twilight Bowls on Thursday evenings.
We hope to cater for working people who would like to start or return to bowls, as well as those who love playing in the evenings.
Names need to be in by 5.30 and play starts in random teams at 6 pm.
We play one game of seven ends and then have a nice break
and sausage sizzle before playing the second game. It’s proven very popular, and everyone enjoys the bowling and social aspect to the evening.
Results have been: Stuart, Neil and Nerida v Joanna, Marg D and Mark: 7-1 and 1-8
Mark S, Leeanne and Doug v Richard, Teresa and Peter M 3-5 and 5-10
Deb, Brendan and Aaron v Sharon, Mitch and Tyrone 8-4 and 6-5
Our second round saw only two ends played before the rain set in so we got off the greens early and enjoyed the sausage sizzle and a cold drink and chat.
Everyone was keen once the rain stopped so we got back to it and played a game of 10 ends.
Results were Mark S, Stuart, Nerida and Hoggy (who bailed after the first 2 ends) def Johnny, Shawn (another defector) Brendan and Mark B 13-6; Bill, Trav and Mike def Deb, Mitch and Darcy 15-3; Eliza, Janice and Aaron def Jasmine, Leeanne and Adam 13-4; and Marg D, Neil and Steve def Sandy, Teresa and Bruce 10-8.
We had a number of players trying out bowls this session and they loved it.
Don’t be afraid to come along - we will all support you and teach you the ins and outs of the game.

A not-so-binding death benefit nomination
SUSIE and John are high school sweethearts.
They marry young and shortly after, their son Joey is born.
Unfortunately, their marriage begins to deteriorate when Joey is only two years old.
In anticipation that they will soon divorce, John makes a non-lapsing Binding Death Benefit Nomination (BDBN) with his superannuation company, Super Super, in which he nominates Joey to receive all of his Super if he dies.
Six months after John makes the BDBN, he and Susie are formally divorced. John moves out of the matrimonial home and he sees Joey every second weekend.
Worried that Susie may try and claim his super in the event of him passing, John notifies Super Super of the divorce and provides them with a copy of the divorce orders.
John struggles to find rental accommodation of his own and moves into a share house with two other people, David and Priscilla.
Although his accommodation is not ideal, he manages to maintain a close relationship with Joey.
Two years after the divorce, John is tragically killed in an accident.
About a month after John’s death, a Super Super statement addressed to John turns up at the share house.
Priscilla opens the statement and sees that John had $200,000 in superannuation.
Priscilla writes to Super Super advising them that John had died.
She states that she and John were in a de facto relationship and makes a claim to receive all of John’s superannuation death benefit.
David provides a Statutory Declaration in support of Priscilla’s purported relationship with John.
Super Super make a determination to pay Priscilla all of John’s super, noting that his BDBN was invalidated by the divorce and therefore, they were not bound to follow it.
Had John’s family lawyer referred him to a solicitor who specialised in estate planning, John would have been advised to re-execute his BDBN after the divorce to ensure Joey received his super.

Better management of local rivers
DEAR News Of The Area,
CONGRATULATIONS
‘Save the
on 28 October 2022.
As a child, during school holidays we would visit our relatives’ farm.
I remember going down to the Taylors Arm River to swim in the beautiful swimming hole cleaned out by the man who dredged the gravel.
After we moved here over 45 years ago, our neighbours would let us know when the same man would be taking gravel from the river in case we needed to pump as the dredging could impact on the beautiful clear water for a couple of days.

DEAR Jasminda,
I have the most amazing hairdresser, but she chats incessantly.
Because I work for a call centre, getting my hair done is one of the few times I can just sit and relax.
How can I tactfully explain this?
Nell D.
Dear Nell,
A plan to solve Cowper’s housing crisis
DEAR News Of The Area,
MY suggestion for attending to this housing 'crisis' is for the government - all 'levels' - to purchase all available houses and units (there are over 1000 at present in Cowper) and make them available for rent to their employeesteachers, medicos, police - at 20 percent of net salary. “
While they are at it, put solar panels on them and add a battery.
And a water tank.
And a bike path to the nearest school.
Sure beats a summit!
Our representative in federal parliament, a member of a minority 'party' or 'mob', invites contribution to their social media publications but when they are challenged or criticised they respond by blocking their constituents.
Their recent 'newsletter' devoted the back page to the member's 'beliefs' about energy. They were wrong.

The absolute folly of the methane pledge
DEAR News Of The Area,
WHY do we allow politicians, many of whom have never set foot on a ‘real’ farm, come up with this ridiculous impost on our long suffering Aussie farmers, without a thread of evidence to the real facts!
Cattle and sheep who live their lives outdoors and are naturally grass fed, emit a minimum amount of methane, probably a lot less than your average beer guzzling bloke!
On the other hand, the poor animals who are confined to industrial feedlots, fed on grain
there were beautiful swimming holes, and you could even dive off the old bridge – now washed away.
The water has always been crystal clear – like spring water.
Other than flooding events, the water is still as clear and pristine as it was years ago once the water clears after a flooding event or downpour.
For decades, gravel was judiciously extracted from key points where it was likely to build up.
That was how most of the rivers were managed and managed well.
It helped to maintain deep pondage for the fish and helped the river do what it should do – and that is to hold water.
Fortunately, it also kept the tidal zone contained during dry times as the last thing anyone would want is the tidal zone moving further upriver and killing valuable riverine vegetation.
Then along came the gravel extraction ban!
The photos included in the article clearly show the results of this blanket ban.
We used to be taught the benefit of using the deposits that flowed down along the Nile Delta and how this helped ancient Egyptians survive.
These silty deposits were so valuable as they helped promote water retention and air circulation.
That was how they managed their river and used the natural resources.
For a while some local farmers managed to get approval to remove some of the material from their waterholes to use only on their own private roads.
Permission was sought to permit clearing some ponds to use the gravel on local roads upriver –what would seem a sensible solution as before the river was heavily impacted by this ban, much of the gravel comes from heavy downpours rushing down the road network and ultimately into the rivers.
This would have saved the ratepayers substantial money in cartage alone.
However, the cost of getting approval from the relevant authority and the time it would take to get
and reduced to a 100 percent unnatural diet plus chemical additives, are unfortunately reduced to digestive tract problems leading to excess methane gas emissions!
Hence, instead of demonising our hard working farmers and their livestock, target inhumane industrial farming methods!
Grass fed cattle and sheep are happier, plus their milk and meat is far superior in taste!
It’s a win/win!
that approval was far greater and could take three years to be approved.
Our rivers are now clogged.
Just imagine the gutters around your house, filled with leaves etc that cannot hold water.
The gutters overflow.
Clogged rivers hold less water; the ponds are filled up impacting fish habitats and water availability.
During dry times – the saltwater moves further inland, poisoning the precious riverine vegetation.
Locals are concerned about bringing in foreign materials for our roads.
Combine all this with the fact that trees which fall into the river are not permitted to be removed from the river where they have created a domino effect during flood time, and the photos in the article show the devastating results.
There are further impacts.
The last drought was long, harsh, and not acknowledged.
Trees growing on the riverbank searched for water with their roots and continued to grow far beyond the sustainability of some of the riverbanks.
This issue was reported to the relevant authority, while the problem was acknowledged, no action was taken to address the issue.
The reason for trying to get some remediation work carried out in this area was because part of the bank is very close to Taylors Arm Road, thereby placing the road at risk.
As the drought continued, the riverbanks became parched as available water diminished or turned to salt.
Then just three years ago, as we all recall, the bushfire ripped down from Kian Road (a little-known fire trail) and set those trees alight.
The fire was so intense. Included in those trees was one with a blaze made when the area was originally surveyed probably over one hundred years ago.
The fire burnt the trees and the roots under the ground.
Being a call centre worker, I can understand that you may need assistance with being tactful. Call centre operators generally call right when dinner is on, or at the start of a working day, or on the weekend when you are just about to play a family game of charades.
Then they start their spiel with such startling speed that it is only after the third sentence that you realise you are being seduced into some home cladding, or a new phone plan, or a two-for-one deal on blinds and shutters, when all you really want to do is dig into your carbonara and garlic bread or your monthly invoices or your non-verbal interpretation of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
So, if it is tact you are after with your hairdresser, arrive with headphones and say, 'I hope you don't mind, but I have to listen to this podcast on productivity before I return to work today. Boss's orders.'
Or you could bring a book and say it's the only opportunity you have to read.
Alternatively, you could realise that your hairdresser knows you are a call centre operator and she is just trying to get her own back from all those occasions when a cold caller interrupted her otherwise peaceful evening.
Carpe diem, Jasminda.
From crevices in the riverbank, you could see the red glowing roots.
While we were happy to see rain when it eventually fell, as always happens, the drought ended with a flood.
The massive force of the water took out trees and devastated great swathes of riverbank.
Much of the precious riverine vegetation has gone and even more riverbanks were washed into the already clogged river.
Just like when you run a bath and the bath runs over – so the water spreads everywhere and cannot be stored or effectively clean out the clogged estuary, and therefore is wasted.
The riverbanks remain susceptible, but so too does the estuary.
What will happen when the slug of silt moving down river meets the sand that washes in from the ocean?
What happens when two east coast lows combine?
When Landcare was first introduced to the Valley, there were many small projects and a few large projects carried out on the rivers.
How these have been assessed or the outcomes may never have taken place.
While the focus seems to be on planting trees, it is time to get back to the rivers.
For decades, those who have sought better management of our local rivers have been thwarted by rules and regulations.
Legislation introduced following well-intended groups intervention have resulted in further degradation of our rivers.
At great cost, many studies were carried out by Catchment Management and Water Management Committees who were charged with such governance.
However, for outcomes, this governance was not balanced.
Consideration should always be given to consequences, and this did not happen when the blanket ban was introduced.
Regards, Janine REED, Utungun

SUNDAY SILENT WITNESS
ABC, 9.20pm
It was only a matter of time. After years of fruitless flirting, are the writers behind one of the longestrunning forensic crime dramas in Britain finally giving into the romantic pressure? In tonight’s season 24 finale, Nikki (Emilia Fox) and her sidekick Jack (David Caves) share a moment that will have fans either all flustered or covering their eyes.

It’s a bold move for a series’ two main characters to cross the flirting boundary: once done there’s no going back. Despite Nikki declaring that their romance would be “totally unethical,” temperatures rise, with the background emergency situation edge-of-your-seat stuff. Season 25 can’t come quickly enough.
Half the Aussie presumably has a long-buried memory where they are singing their heart out to Tina Arena’s (right) passionate Chains
Likewise, it was a rite of passage for many to curl up on the couch with our parents or grandparents to witness the emotional theatrics of This Is Your Life, which first hit screens in 1975. Tonight, viewers can take another trip down memory lane, in more ways than one, as the rebooted version of this series celebrates Arena’s impressive career. Australian and international guests pay tribute to one of Australia’s most successful female performers, with host Melissa Doyle emcee of the entertaining shindig.

The Living Room has been a reliably jovial Friday evening stalwart for the past 11 years, but the word is out that the show is taking a year-long break so that Amanda Keller, Miguel Maestre (above centre), Barry Du Bois (above left) and Dr Chris Brown (above right) can have a breather. While fans fret about whether they’ll defect to Better Homes and Gardeans, lap up these final episodes. Saturday will be on the Flat Track and Sunday will be on the Motor Cross track.
“The excitement here is if you want the Champion of the Dirt title you have to ride both tracks.
“How interesting will that be?” posed Bob.
“On top of all that we are at Raleigh Raceway for a two-day, Saturday and Sunday, NSW Rallycross Championship event.”
This is an exciting spectator sport with great vision of the track.
The final round of the RedPoint

Burnouts and Hillclimbs
COFFS Coast Festival of Motor Sport 2022’s first event has been run and won.
Kempsey Sporting Car Club officials and members produced a great event, introducing RedPoint, the series sponsor, to the first round of the RedPoint Hillclimb Series at its Cooperabung Track on Sunday, 6 November.
With a field of 39 cars from Kempsey, Grafton and Coffs Harbour clubs, plus some from the Gold Coast Tweed Car Club, Bathurst Light Car Club and MG Car Club in Newcastle, some great times were achieved.
"The weather was good and the track almost perfect,” Coffs City Rotary Club executive Bob Carle, Chair of the Coffs Coast Festival of Motor Sport, told News Of The Area.
The following results are for the fastest time of the day:
First Outright: Dave Morrow from Coffs Harbour in a Krygger Suzuki with a time of 25.721secs.
Second Outright: Les Maloney from Kempsey in his Ford Focus with a time of 28.501secs.
Third Outright: Michael Boaden from Wauchope in a Mitsubishi Evo with a time of 28.970 secs.
Fastest Lady: Elizabeth Simpson in a VW Golf GTI with a time of 32.644 secs.
Fastest Junior: Thomas Oram in a Subaru Impreza with a time of 31.143 secs.
Coffs Harbour driver John Kelly was unlucky not to be in the outright results,
finishing in his Subaru WRX with a time of 29.017 secs.
The second event in the Festival’s first weekend was the Burnout Competition at Raleigh Raceway.
A huge thanks goes to Steven Michell for his assistance in putting this show together.
“A lot of smoke and burnt tyres kept the many spectators entertained all afternoon,” said Bob.
“Some smart, very powerful visiting drivers outperformed the locals much to everyone’s approval.
“They were exciting to watch with lots of manoeuvers and plenty of smoke and noise.”
First was Logan Shore in a VR Commodore Ute, finishing second was Jett Trappel in a VN Commodore Wagon and third was Blake Bolton in a Falcon XR6 Turbo.
The action continued with Round 2 of the RedPoint Hillclimb series at Raleigh Raceway at Raleigh.
This event was run by Coffs Harbour and District Sporting Car Club and took place on Wednesday, 9 November.
More on that next week.
The following weekend on Saturday, 12 November sees a massive Motorcycle Show at Coffs Harbour Race Club in Howard Street.
This show will have vintage, classic, special and new bikes from local and out-oftown motorcycle dealers, motorcycle clubs
