Emergency services attended swiftly but were unable to save the building, which in daylight revealed charred and twisted corrugated iron, and doubts as to the structural integrity of the concrete slab.

Reserve Fire

The reserve operates under the Nambucca Council Section 355, and with limited profits during the last few years, building insurance has not been a viable option.

As a dedicated storage shed, the contents included stacks of portable tables and chairs, crockery, shelves of painting products, and, most importantly, a large filing cabinet containing financial and historical records dating back to the 1930s.

q The Reserve Committee believes an electrical fault may be the cause of the blaze.

The Reserve Committee commented, “We are waiting for the results of the Coroner’s report, but at the moment we are assuming that an electrical fault was the cause.

More info at https://www.unkya.com.au/.

A spokesperson for the Unkya Reserve Committee of Management informed NOTA, “This is devastating, though it could have been much worse if the blaze had spread to surrounding bushland, and it’s so sad that the large mosaic on the exterior wall is now a pile of rubble, though we may be able to salvage some of the pieces.”

“Installation of a shipping container is being considered as an interim alternative till funds are raised for a rebuild, so let us know if anyone has a spare one to offer or lend.”

THIS was our first week back after the Greens renovation and the drenching the course received over the weekend forcing the cancellation of the Men’s Monthly Medal on Saturday and the Island Sunday Mixed 4BBB on Sunday. The course recovered remarkably quickly, and with strong nor’easters blowing on Wednesday and Thursday, the renovated greens responded very well – although some putts were seen to have a mind of their own over the occasional core holes.

Relief from Abnormal Course Conditions – if on the putting green, you can obtain free relief from any damaged areas.

The stroke event will be played in 3 Grades, with trophies awarded for scratch and net in each Grade.

DEAR News Of The Area,

It is costing us dearly to be deprived of the recreational and spiritual connection to Nature in state forests, deprived of the profits of nature tourism, deprived of the flood mitigation wellvegetated headwaters provide, deprived of the climate benefits of carbon sequestration that more bushfire-resilient forests can give.

The estate was not finalised until five years after John’s death due to difficulty tracking down all of his cousins.

16 NAMBUCCA VALLEY NEWS OF THE AREA

By Paul DORIN

All levels of government have a responsibility to our future, to conserve what is left when so much is vanishing everyday.

Forestry Corporation repeatedly breaches the conditions, designed to protect key ecosystems and habitat, of its licence, thus costing the

Logging and clear felling our native forest is disastrous.Arereaders aware that our taxes ($20 million in 2020/21) are squandered propping up this destructive industry?

Over 700 people signed a petition opposing the rezoning, and certainly Lot 45 was not in the vicinity of all their backyards.

We are paying to have our forests trashed,

How is this a sustainable way to raise funds?

Coastal villages should not have to sell off their land to fund Council works.

If you believe that Part Lot 45 should remain as community land please write to the Minister for Planning, the Honorable Anthony Roberts MP at office@roberts.minister.nsw.gov.au and request that he not approve this rezoning.

Kudos to you for making the effort and for being both proactive and altruistic, if not a tad naive.Areyou usually someone who runs?

The Council has stated that funds raised from selling two housing blocks at Part Lot 45 will fund the repair of local infrastructure like the South

I'm now hobbling around taking antiinflammatory tablets, nursing frozen peas and making physio appointments that will cost far more than the amount I donated.Isthere a lesson in all of this?

Instead, Local Government should be protecting their heritage for future generations.

Regards, Dr JohnVallaBENNETT,Beach.

John assumed that, when he sold the house, his estate will only be comprised of a cash in his bank account so he made a Will which gifted “the cash in my bank account to my cousins Sarah and Rhianna”.

He also named Sarah and Rhianna as his executors.Johnpassed away suddenly but peacefully in his sleep, before he had marketed his property for sale.

And as we all know - Koalas are now officially ENDANGERED in this State.

THANK you for the article, ‘Kalang Catchment Concerns’ (News Of The Area, 9 September), exposing the dangers of erosion and water pollution likely to be the catastrophic consequences of Forestry Corporation's planned inappropriate, industrial logging.

twelve years, I have seen one Koala, and that was in South Valla.

At the date of his death, John had $3,000 in his savings account.

This council refused to support the Great Koala National Park initiative and supports continuing forestry operations in Koala habit.

our special ecosystems annihilated, our unique native species, including the Koala, deprived of habitat and driven to extinction and our water catchments ruined.

There are many native flora species growing on the land including Allocasuarinas, the only species of feed tree for endangered glossy black cockatoos.

To add insult to injury, two reports by Locale Consulting were produced, funded by the public.

Where is the democracy?

On the Couch with Jasminda

DEAR News Of The Area,

Not only did they not have any contact with most of the cousins, they did not think that it was fair that people who had nothing to do with John in his lifetime should receive any provision from his estate.

The village is situated between two Nature Reserves which are losing biodiversity and South Valla already has a huge housing development which interferes with fauna mobility.Nambucca Valley Council have disrespected the views of the community so clearly expressed in petitions and meetings by reclassifying the land.

Dear Tamika,

By Manny WOOD

Another nail in the coffin

You can't just turn up to an event full of goodwill and Red Bull and expect to be able to perform as though you are a seasoned runner. You need to build up to these things by perhaps joining a walking group, alternating short distances of jogging and walking, and eventually, after a few months, doing some short sprints and increasing your distance each week, as long as you remain injury free.

It seems a waste of time and money when the motions of consulting the public are gone through only to be dismissed as not valid.

‘THINK GLOBAL, ACT LOCAL’: This slogan describes the actions of Valla Beach residents opposing the decision by Nambucca Valley Council to reclassify Part Lot 45 Ocean View Drive from community to operational, allowing it to be sold for residential development.Atatime of devastating loss of habitat and wildlife over the entire world, we may feel powerless to make large changes, but we can try to protect our own neighbourhood.

Let us join WA and Victoria in ending native forest destruction.

people feel a sense of duty to protect these animals.Since Council has dismissed the claims of the land being used in this way by wildlife, surely there should have been an ecological study done prior to a rezoning decision.

Wildflowers are coming into bloom, but all vegetation will be reduced by Council workers to a height of 10cm. Suggestions have been made by Valla Beach locals to enhance the area by bringing back topsoil that was removed and placing Pictorial Information Boards to showcase the nature reserves in the area.

Stop using public money to fund environmental destruction!

Where is democracy?the

John was an only child and never married nor had children.

LOT 45 is a small block of land granted to the community by the original planners, a preserved public green space.

The NSW State of the Environment 2021 report, released in February, is a sobering and depressing document.Landclearing in NSW has tripled over the past decade! And the Australia State of the Environment Report 2021, released in July (six months after the coalition received it), again shocking reading.

Dorin’s Draws

DEAR Yesterday,Jasminda, whileparticipating in a fun run to raise money for a good local cause, I somehow managed to injure myself.

Although John was relatively cash poor in retirement, he was considered asset rich and had a net worth of about $2 million, having purchased a large block with a small fibro house located close to the beach, in the early 1970’s.

taxpayer even more in fines.

Yours sincerely, JudithVallaKIRWOOD,Beach.

JOHN worked hard throughout his life, earning a modest wage and comfortably providing for himself.

Sarah and Rhianna are advised by their solicitor that they are only entitled to $1,500 each and that the remainder of John’s estate must be dealt with in accordance with the rules of ‘intestacy’. In this particular case, all of John’s first cousins were entitled to an equal portion of the estate.

Next time, just click the donate button on the charity's website, which shouldn't cause damage to anything but your account balance. The name Fun Run is a misnomer, as you have unfortunately discovered. They should be called Have You Ever Seen a Long-Distance Runner Smile?

HYPOTHETICAL Taking a Legal Look

Sarah and Rhianna were furious.

John’s situation highlights the importance of proper estate planning, particularly where one does not have any surviving immediate family members.

Email Manny Wood, Principal Solicitor at TB Law at manny@tblaw.net.au or call him on (02) 66 487 487.

This small parcel is precious because it is a wildlife corridor between the protected littoral rainforest of Valla Nature Reserve to land west and wetlands south.

DEAR News Of The Area,

Despite zero residents being in favour of the rezoning and 36 detailed submissions opposing the rezoning, their opinions and wishes were dismissed as NIMBY syndrome (not in my back yard). This is an insulting term, used to discredit people as being selfish or ill-informed.

Arriving in your activewear, somehow assuming that an X-back sports bra, Techfit tights and cross-train runners will be enough to get you to the finish line in fine form is admirably spontaneous, but mind-numbingly stupid.Add to that those endorphins that create a 'runner's high' and you would have been too busy gazing at the scenery and chatting about how you think you could have missed your calling as a long-distance elite athlete, to notice your knees were developing Iliotibial Band Syndrome, your feet were jogging their way to plantar fasciitis and your hip labrum wasNottearing.tomention the sun damage.

TUESDAY TAKE 5 WITH ROWEZAN

each week for the past 15 years on her enormously popular radio program and podcast, which makes its television debut this week. There are five episodes in the series, featuring country legend Keith Urban, singer-songwriter Missy Higgins, sports presenter Tony Armstrong and pop powerhouse Tori Amos. In this premiere episode, Rowe delves deep with actor Guy Pearce, who reflects on how music helps him make sense of the world.

An Emmy Award-winning comedy, Atlanta rewrites the rule book on storytelling and hitting viewers’ funny bones. After last season, in which Earn (Donald Glover, pictured above), Van (Zazie Beetz), Darius (Lakeith Stanfield) and Paper Boi (Brian Tyree Henry) indulged in weird adventures in Europe, you could say creator and star Glover threw that pesky rule book out of a fastmoving car’s window. For the fourth and final season premiering tonight, the crew is back in Atlanta. Glover has promised this series is all about having fun. News. Shaun Micallef’s MAD AS HELL. (M, R) 12.50 Summer Love. The competition is heating up for the next room reveal, as the all-important kitchens get their time in the spotlight. Darren Palmer will no doubt on the lookout to see if these latest offerings adhere to his “five-zone kitchen” ideals, as he and fellow judges Shaynna Blaze and Neale Whitaker (pictured right) cast a critical eye over them. While some design choices this season have left fans divided, there’s no doubt the country location of this year’s series has been a breath of fresh winButrunningforfi(literallyairandguratively)thislong-series.whowillthisweek?
