By Karen GRIBBIN NAMBUCCA Valley Radio 2NVR, our local community radio station, recently celebrated its 30th birthday at the Bowraville Theatre. Celebrations were originally to take place at the 2NVR Studios, but after months of preparation and extremely wet weather, the steering committee decided the boggy conditions at the studio were too risky, and so plans were moved to the iconic theatre. “It was a great decision as the Bowraville Theatre volunteers were very helpful, and the space worked well,” said Ceri Wrobel, 2NVR Presenter and Publicity Officer.

ATTENDING the Macksville Circle Sentencing program’s Premier's Award presentation day on 26 May was a reformed offender who, in his own words, is “very grateful for the Circle and how it helped change my life”. The man’s name is Daniel, and he shared at the presentation some of his personal story from both before and after his experience of the Circle Sentencing program. Daniel spoke of being an “uncontrollable, stubborn and ignorant kid” who started making poor choices at a young age. “I left home at fifteen and

started hanging around the wrong places smoking and drinking, which quickly led to the beginning of my criminal history.” Daniel told the gathering about his criminal lifestyle, which saw him running from police, rehab and courtrooms. “My life was just spiralling out of control, a drug addicted, paranoid, careless criminal with not a worry in the world other than for myself and my needs.” He was eventually caught by the police. “No more running and hiding from the police, I wasn’t happy, but relieved at the same time.” Daniel’s solicitor offered him the option of the Circle Sentencing Court, and he was accepted into the

program by the local Magistrate. “Going through the Circle was the real turning point in my life. “I was reconnected with my culture, my family, and most importantly my children. “Through the Circle I was given the right tools and support to address my issues, my criminal behaviour, my drug addiction. “The Circle has definitely changed my life.” Daniel now considers himself a rehabilitated man who has been drug free for five years. “I have become a father and a role model to my kids, gotten a driver’s licence and found a job, which helps me strive to be a better person, father and partner every day.

“Still to this day I remain in contact with Victor and the Elders from the Circle and I’m very grateful for the Circle and how it helped change my life.” When News Of The Area spoke with Victor Darcy, Senior Aboriginal Client and Community Support Officer Department of Communities and Justice, about the Circle Sentencing Program. He spoke of the many offenders that successfully move through the program and never reoffend again, like Daniel. “In some of them you can see the bulb turn on when we are talking with them. “We are asking them to think, asking them what are you going to do to correct that behaviour,” Victor said.

MID North Coast-based Senior Constable Wallace Brooks said he is happy to see a decline in the overall road toll over the last 20 years, but is dismayed that speeding continues to be a leading contributor to road trauma. “I’ve been working as a traffic and highway patrol officer for 25 years, but you never get used to visiting a crash site or hearing the jobs over the radio,” Senior Constable Brooks said. “Visiting family members to tell them their loved one has been involved in a fatal crash is a devastating part of my job.” In the five years to 2020, at least

two-thirds of speed-related deaths and serious injuries occurred when a driver or rider was travelling no more than 10km/h over the speed limit. There were 90 people killed in Northern NSW in 2021, and 37 people have died in the region so far this year. Tara McCarthy, Deputy Secretary of Safety, Environment and Regulation at Transport for NSW, said speeding is the leading contributor to fatal crashes on NSW roads – contributing to around 40 percent of deaths each year. “Going ‘just a bit over’ can be the difference between being able to stop in time or not at all,” Ms McCarthy said. “Travelling at the 65km/h in a

60km/h speed zone doubles the risk of a casualty crash. “Any extra speed means extra impact force – and the human body can only tolerate so much before death, or serious injury is all but inevitable.” Senior Constable Brooks said it is disappointing to see motorists being so casual about speeding when people are dying on our roads because of it. “There is absolutely no reason to be speeding,” Senior Constable Brooks said. “When I am called to a crash in Coffs Harbour, there’s a good chance that I know the people involved, which is scary.” Twenty years ago, half of the people killed in speeding-related

crashes on country roads were locals to where the crash occurred. This is still the case today, with about 52 percent of people killed on NSW country roads between 2016 and 2020 being locals killed close to home. Ms McCarthy said the NSW Government is committed to driving the road toll toward zero. “We’re working hard to make our regional roads safer.” Through our ‘Every K Counts’ campaign, we are trying to educate motorists about the serious consequences of casual speeding,” Ms McCarthy said. “Road safety is a shared responsibility – please stay under the speed limit and always drive to the conditions.”

Circle Sentencing Court Program in Macksville receives the Premier’s Award FROM Page 1

Nambucca Valley and Kempsey were the first to host the award in the regions where the program is delivered. Circle Sentencing is an alternative sentencing court for adult Aboriginal offenders held in a community setting. Aboriginal community members, the local Magistrate, police prosecutor, solicitor for the accused, the accused, the victim, support people and the local sheriff attend the Circle Sentencing sessions. The respected Aboriginal community members sentence the offender after hearing from members of the Circle, including the victim giving their account and sharing the effects that the crime has had on them. The program first began in the Nambucca Valley in 2009 after trials had been run elsewhere in NSW. Following the initial success the program has now been rolled out in a number of locations across NSW. Victor Darcy, Senior Aboriginal Client and Community Support Officer Department of Communities and Justice said, “The Circle court is all about offenders being made accountable.

“It makes the offender take responsibility for their behaviours.” Kevin Jarrett, panel member and Aboriginal Health worker for NSW Health, said, “The victim gets to speak up. “They get a voice and a safe place to tell their story. “The accused disempowers them and the Circle empowers them.” Mr Jarrett explained, “The beauty of the Circle is that you get the support of the others in the circle. “It is hard making these judgements on offenders that we often know. “But we get to come to a general consensus, we decide how to manage the different views for the best outcome for the accused. “There is a big responsibility on the offender to get themselves back on track once they have been to Circle Court.” Mayor Rhonda Hoban explained her first experience of Circle Sentencing in 2009. “I was sceptical and half expected a patronising process based on a sympathy vote for the disadvantaged. “How wrong I was. “It was no soft option. “It’s not a system where

excuses are made and it must be very hard for the Elders to participate in determining the punishment when it is often a person from their own community and they are all too familiar with some of the challenges the offender may have faced in life.” Mayor Hoban sees one strength in the program being that the offender knows that even though the community members have handed down the sentence, they are there

2NVR celebrates 30 years of community radio FROM Page 1

Prior to celebrations beginning, visitors had the opportunity to visit the radio station at Tewinga before heading back into Bowraville. Local musicians Splash, Ali Christopher, Glenn Heath and The Deep Blue Sea, Graham Howle and The Loose Cannons all gave their time to provide fabulous live music all afternoon. Many pioneers of 2NVR attended, some travelling from interstate for the auspicious occasion.

The Theatre foyer was the perfect place for reunions and to browse the 2NVR archives. Ceri Wrobel was the MC for the day and she interviewed several of the 2NVR pioneers to hear their stories. Gary Williams, pioneer of Goori Radio in the Nambucca Valley gave a Welcome to Country. 2NVR President Donna Collins welcomed everyone and also streamed a live to air broadcast so people could listen from anywhere. Mayor Rhonda Hoban gave

a welcoming speech befitting her long association with 2NVR. 2NVR pioneer Rob Turnell, who was instrumental in setting up the radio station and obtaining the broadcasting licence, spoke about the history of the station. Rob awarded 2NVR’s newest presenters Deb Truskett (Scoobs), Ralph Ord and Tim Hood with their Certificates of Attainment in Radio Broadcasting. Hauville frustrated with by-election process WITH the announcement that Kempsey Shire residents will return to the polls on Saturday 30 July to vote in the by-election for eight Kempsey Shire Councillor positions, Kempsey Shire Mayor Leo Hauville has expressed frustration with the process. “The whole saga of the iVote system failure and the decision of the Supreme Court of NSW to void the December

election has left a sour taste in all our mouths,” Mr Hauville said. “The present Councillors rightly feel very upset that they must dedicate their time, energy and money to another election campaign just seven months after they were told they had been successfully elected.” Despite his frustrations, Mayor Hauville encouraged

Kempsey Shire residents to take to the polls a second time in support of “our essential democratic process”. “Even though we may find this distasteful, we are a country of laws that must be followed. “So please consider all the nominated candidates and remember to vote on Saturday 30 July.”

Nambucca Valley Phoenix open donations program By Karen GRIBBIN

NAMBUCCA Valley Phoenix has launched ‘Keep Phoenix Flying’, a donation program which will help the organisation continue to provide employment and programs to people living with disability or experiencing disadvantage in the Nambucca Valley. All donations over $2.00 are tax deductible. “Our donation imitative is now up, but there are other ways to support our organisation. “By enjoying our food, belonging to the community at the Phoenix Gallery and Café, or joining a program at the Phoenix School of Arts, or getting involved at the Depot community shed,” said Phoenix Coordinator Pippa Tabone. Phoenix Gallery and Café is a community owned and operated social enterprise. “Through this enterprise we support people living with disability or experiencing disadvantage in the region,” said Pippa. Set in the historic Bowraville bank building amongst beautiful gardens, the café offers ambience, a delicious range of healthy and affordable food options as well as local produce. The gallery features art exhibitions from local artists, locally made arts and crafts and works for sale. Phoenix School of Arts Programs on offer are ceramics, drawing, painting, textiles, screen to printing, felting, tie-dying, mosaics, and woodwork. The art school is housed in Phoenix’s ‘yurt’ buildings across the lane from the main premises and offering a wide range of arts programs for

NDIS participants (Ability Arts), and open to the public (Open Arts), suitable for students at any level and of any ability, delivered by qualified adult educators and professional artists. “This is a great opportunity for private support workers to give their client’s a chance

to develop their creative skills, and many of our programs are a great entry level for further opportunities,” said Pippa. Phoenix creates work opportunities for people living with a disability or experiencing disadvantage, such as long-term unemployment or lack of

transport. This includes employment, training, enterprise development, volunteering and work experience at Phoenix. “The gallery exhibitions change monthly showcasing local artists, we’ve received funding to hold school holiday programs for July, and the

café is now open on Saturdays now from 8am – 2pm,” said Alejandra, Arts Coordinator at Phoenix Gallery. Dine and Discover vouchers can be used in the café, and contribute to art course costs. Phoenix Gallery and Café is a registered organisation for

Bello’s improv music festival YOUNG musicians, the Bellingen Improvised Music Collective Inc is inviting you to participate in the inaugural Bellingen Improvised Music Festival (BIMF). Providing learning and performing experiences, BIMF is a weekend of original and improvised music for youth and adult audiences, held in the Bellingen Showground Main Pavilion on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 July 2022. BIMF Chairperson Louise Gore told News Of The Area how this style of performing plays out. “Improvising is like composing on the spot, unplanned - the musicians have varying degrees of freedom to do their own thing. “Sometimes they go for complete freedom, with no prior ideas about what they’ll play. “Sometimes they start with a composed piece or a song - and then freely explore their take on the piece/song. “All the time you’re listening to the other musicians, being open to what is coming from within yourself, and adding your bit or not at that moment. “You aren’t following a written score from start to finish.” The group interaction is really satisfying, the performers say. “You bring yourselves, your training and experience at hand, it’s a very ‘in the present moment thing’, and you all roll with that. “It’s intense and exciting because of the immediacy, the ‘on-edgeness’ of it, and the collaboration and connectedness for

PLAYERS have been amazed at how well our Golf Course has recovered from the long running wet weather event. Sunny days and fair winds have assisted the drying process, and it’s been great to see the fairway mowers out for the first time in two months. We still have some “wet weather” local rules in play, particularly for some areas of rough where the ground remains too soft for heavy machinery to access. This week’s featured sponsor is Allied Air Conditioning who provide all the Club’s cooling and heating requirements. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Barely playable a week ago, we considered the course would be in an unsuitable condition to host the scheduled MNC Vets Tuesday competition, and it was cancelled. A small group of members were able to play a Medley Stableford on Tuesday 7 June, with William Mann (16) scoring 30 points to win. The Ball rundown went to

DEAR Jasminda,

By Manny WOOD

Different residences preserve relationship JACK and Jill have been married for 40 years. Ten years ago, Jack moves out of the matrimonial home and into separate accommodation. Five years ago, Jack is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and moves into an aged-care facility. When Jack passes-away, he is receiving a pension from his superannuation fund. Jill makes an application to the superannuation fund to receive Jack’s pension by way of a “reversionary benefit” on the basis that she is Jack’s spouse. The superannuation fund declines Jill’s application, stating that because they were not living together “on a permanent and bona fide domestic basis” at the date of Jack’s death, Jill no longer satisfies the definition of “spouse”. Jill makes a complaint to the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) and a review of the superannuation fund’s decision is conducted. AFCA states that the formal act of separation will be conclusive that the relationship of “living together” has come to an end even if the legal status of marriage continues to exist. However, AFCA rejects the argument that the expression “living together” requires the parties to live in the same household. Jill argues that living with Jack became untenable due to behaviour attributed to the early stages of his disease. She says that Jack’s initial move into separate accommodation was made with a view to providing the parties with personal space and was in fact positive for their relationship. Jill says that despite living in separate residences, she continued to visit Jack regularly, cooked and bought him meals. AFCA states that the choice to live in different residences was done to preserve the relationship and after reviewing the evidence from a variety of sources, is satisfied that Jack and Jill were living with each other as husband and wife at the date of death. AFCA decides that the superannuation fund’s decision should be set aside and that Jill is entitled to the reversionary spousal pension plus interest to remedy the delays in the commencement of the pension benefits. I was recently asked to be the godparent of my best friend's newborn. She knows I'm not a religious person, and told me I just need to say 'yes' to whatever they ask me in the church. This seems a bit dodgy. I don't want to insult her though. Maureen L. Maureen,

This really is an ethical quagmire. You just need to say 'yes' to whatever they ask you? They will ask you, depending on the religious designation of your friend, some pretty specific questions in relation to your beliefs and the way you are going to assist in bringing up the child according to that religion. Just saying 'yes' seems to be a pretty unethical command from your best friend. How, for example, are you performing the duty of a godparent if you are lying for her convenience at the first hurdle? Surely this goes against the teachings of all religions. I'd be saying as much, and then letting her decide whether you are the right person for the role or if she could instead have a naming day ceremony. You could perhaps suggest that you'll be a solid support and role model for the baby, but you can't possibly make things up for the convenience of the service. The fact that you are feeling uncomfortable and compromised indicates that you are a principled and honourable person. Your friend? Not so much. Carpe diem, Jasminda. Both dates recognise the vital work of all volunteers and all agencies. So many in our community are volunteers who work in different ways to help to create a better society for everyone and we simply say ‘Thank you’. at a national level. Community hero: To recognise and celebrate outstanding mental health leadership at a State or community level. The Australian Mental Health Prize was established in 2016 by UNSW Sydney’s Medicine & Health School of Psychiatry. Scientia Professor Henry Brodaty AO at UNSW Medicine and Health said, “Leadership comes in many shapes and sizes, which is why we feel it is important to broaden the nominations across four significant categories. They give people more flexibility in how they choose to nominate. “While we will continue to recognise people who have dedicated their lives to improving the mental health of Australians at a national level, we specifically wanted to shine a light on the incredible

work of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mental health leaders and people with lived experience, who have so much insight and wisdom to share. We also wanted to recognise our community heroes, as a great deal of innovative work begins as a grassroots level in local communities,” Prof. Brodaty said. How to nominate To enter, nominators will answer three questions about the nominee’s contribution to mental health and how it is making an impact. Nominations are completed using an online form. Nomination questions can be obtained from: http:// australianmentalhealthprize. org.au Entries open on June 14 and close on August 1. The winners will be announced in late September.

“What the hell did I agree to this for?” quips actor Simon Baker (below) in the season 13 premiere of this thriving series. Genealogy is a puzzle-like beast, but with a crack team of researchers behind this show, it’s plain to see why celebrities carry on appearing to learn the funny and sad stories hiding in the branches of their family tree. Along with The Mentalist star Baker, radio/TV presenter Myf Warhurst, netball champion Liz Ellis, chef Matt Moran and TV vet Dr Chris Brown are among the familiar faces confronting their family history. Exploring his Aussie ancestry, Baker discovers a huge family and an Irish orphan who became a pioneering eye surgeon.

Often mocked for leaning heavily on sentimentality, this drama – or tragedy – bows out tonight with a masterful flourish. Creator Dan Fogelman obviously had a clear vision for the multigenerational story of the Pearson family, which might have been hazy to some as it rummaged around in the past as far back as the ’40s, all the way to 2040. Besides some excellent makeup artistry and costuming, the series’ backbone has been its outstanding ensemble cast and remarkable editing, on show tonight. Prepare for tissues, three words and a simple conclusion as Kevin (Justin Hartley, above right), Kate (Chrissy Metz), and Randall (Sterling K Brown) bow out.

WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?

FRIDAY

KEEPING FAITH

ABC, 9.30pm

This tense thriller, set in a seemingly idyllic town in the Welsh countryside, is racing headlong into its final episode. While initially, the series revolved around Faith’s (Eve Myles) search for her missing husband, it soon became clear his disappearance was just the beginning of a rocky road for the lawyer and mother – now, she’s fighting for the rights of a 14-year-old with a brain tumour while fending off her scheming mother Rose (Celia Imrie). The third and final season’s penultimate instalment sees Rose put the second stage of her plan into action after her attempts to make amends with Faith fall flat.

Celebrating ONE YEAR

gaye@newsofthearea.com.au

By David WIGLEY NORTH Coast Squash won gold and bronze at the NSW Combined High Schools competition last week at Thornleigh Squash Club in Sydney. Nambucca High School physical education teacher Col Hocking has been managing the North Coast squash team for ten years and was delighted with the outcome. “To win two bronze medals in both the boys and girls team events shows the strength and depth of the group against the best students in the state,” said the reigning Nambucca Squash Club champion. “Madison Nagar from Coffs Harbour had a stellar tournament taking out gold in the individual girls under 15s event. “What’s even more remarkable is that she is only twelve and competed against girls two years older than her. “She has a very bright future in the sport. “The camaraderie in the camp was excellent and this really helped us in the team events with all players cheering for their teammates and giving advice between games. “These events provide valuable life experiences for the students and I’m really pleased they made the most of it and enjoyed being part of a team.”
