Median house prices, which peaked between September and November 2022 in most parts of the valley, increased 3.23 percent in Nambucca Heads in the four months from October last year to February 2023, pushing prices from $650,000 to $671,000, according to figures from realestate.com.au.

Despite Bowraville, Macksville, Hyland Park and Valla Beach all seeing declines of between 4.29 percent and 7.14 percent in the same period, median house prices across the Nambucca Valley have still increased significantly in the three years since the Covid outbreak began.

Billed as featuring ‘Sydney’s hottest men’, the two-hour Hotshots show is described as ‘a visual feast, choreographed and developed by Australia’s leading professionals’.

“Our hand-picked selection of dreamy guys will have the ladies up from their chairs, screaming for more, night after night!,” said the Sydney Hotshots organisers.

“With a totally interactive

“A high energy production, our shows boast the perfect mix of killer dance routines, eye-catching costumes, acrobatics, and jaw dropping athletic male physiques.”

The Sydney Shotshops are selected from hundreds of men nationwide and put through an intensive ‘Hotshots Bootcamp’, with the show featuring tradies, cops, farmers and even firemen.

“Hosted by seasoned professional Paul Reynolds (original cast member of Manpower Australia and Las Vegas headliner), Reynold’s showmanship and cheeky banter with our audiences makes for an extra entertaining evening,” the organisers said.

Troy Vance, LJ Hooker Nambucca and Macksville real estate agent, said median house prices in Scotts Head had increased 105 percent over five years to overtake Valla Beach as the Nambucca Valley’s most expensive market, largely driven by the limited supply, ocean views and the town’s popularity with Sydney buyers.

The continued growth in Nambucca Heads is likely attributable to some strong sales in the past few months, aided by the town’s proximity to Coffs Harbour, Vance said, adding that rising interest rates are unlikely to result in any major declines in property prices across the valley, citing the area’s desirable coastal location, affordability and an undersupply of rentals as factors that will help ensure continued demand.

“We’re still one of the most affordable places on the coast,” he said.

While the average time on market has stretched out to about 90 days, Vance said vendors who’re patient and put the right price on properties from the start are still seeing strong results.

And for those looking to buy, Vance advises not waiting until interest rates drop.

“If we do get one more rate rise, that’s the time to buy, because once the rates start dropping again, that’s when people will flood back into the market.”

“In terms of delivering on the brief to reconnect regional communities, we absolutely nailed it.

“All around me and throughout the entire event, people were catching up with acquaintances and loving the community atmosphere.”

With an estimated 1,500 visitors across the day, the steps in front of the stage and the whole western end of River Street were jam packed right until the last bars of headline act ‘Sunset Strut’.

Featuring dozens of local organisations, artists and performers included music acts Billie-Jo Porter, Loose Cannons and Blind Pretty, dance performances from Valley Performing Arts Centre and Opal Dreaming, and a ‘Welcome to Country’ by Uncle Micklo Jarrett.

Two local choirs, Valla Voices and the Yarrapinni Choir, gave performances, after which the audience were invited to sing along with renditions of ‘You’re the Voice’ and ‘Dancing in the Street’, along with the choir and backing band.

The floorspace at Galeria Creative Junction was abuzz with activity as local artists and writers gave workshops and book launches.

According to the business owner and curator Felice Ferrer-Burton, it was the busiest day they’d experienced since opening.

After dark, the lantern parade, headed up by two giant cardboard puppets, wound its way up and down Wallace Lane to the beat of local reggae sound system MC Fitzroy Lee feat. Fluxa, and in the laneway, children and parents played with hula hoops, juggling balls and poi,

Residents complain of lack of transparency around Hill Street public road closure

decision was made without taking into account impacts to surrounding residents.

A PROPOSED road closure and development application (DA) at 3 High Street, Nambucca Heads (DP 390600), has residents of High and Hill Streets submitting objections to Nambucca Valley Council.

Residents' objections to the road closure and subsequent proposed development include a lack of transparency during Council process, loss of an iconic view of up to 70 percent from their living rooms and balconies, impacts on amenity, privacy, overshadowing, and potential reduction of property values.

In July 2021, 3 High Street sold for $1.41 million, and in August 2021 Vista Projex Pty Ltd made an application to Nambucca Valley Council requesting a part road closure of Hill Street.

On 14 October 2021, Council resolved to agree “to the closure of part of Hill Street from High Street to step in the boundary in the north eastern corner of the land, which is Public Road”.

As part of the discussion, Council reported to Councillors that there were no environmental impacts, and no social or financial implications from the closure.

Councillors then adopted the recommendations for closure.

Residents feel there has been a direct lack of transparency in Council’s activities regarding due process.

The report of 14 October to Councillors did not state the economic benefit to Council once the road was converted into a lot, and potentially sold, and no mention of social impacts to adjoining residents, as at this stage they had not been informed.

There were also no environmental reports regarding water runoff from the parcel of land including reduced drainage, and adjoining land instability, which in October 2022 suffered a major land slippage.

At this time there had been no correspondence to adjoining High and Hill Street residents, and a

On 25 October residents received correspondence from Council notifying them of a proposal to close part of Hill Street.

The proposal described the closure area as a ‘thin slither’ of public road.

A diagram was attached to the letter with no detailed dimensions, no survey was provided (despite a

survey being available to Council), and no explanation given as to the context or timing for the proposed closure.

The letter also did not explain that the proposal had already been presented to Council and adopted.

The proposal by Casa Koala Pty Ltd on behalf of Vista Projex Pty Ltd defined as ‘Integrated Development’ exceeds Council’s LEP in the overdevelopment of the proposed site, and needs to purchase additional

land from Nambucca Valley Council, which the road closure area represents.

Residents are concerned that in effect, Council is being asked to consider a DA where Council benefits financially from the sale of roadway, that will directly benefit the developer and disadvantage current ratepayers.

Nambucca Valley Council’s Manager of Environment and Development, Daniel Walsh said, “Applications to buy unmade roads is not an uncommon occurrence, often residents, and landowners make applications to extend their backyards etc, the process can take years to process.”

High Street resident Mr David Pleasance said, “I feel the inclusion of this ‘thin slither’ of roadway creates a huge advantage to the developers of 3 High Street, over and above the current High and Hill Street residents.

“It is not the business of Council to create advantage to developers, as the original portion allowed only minimal development upon the existing site.”

Bernie and Geraldine Perkins have owned their unit at 1 High Street since July 2022, and to date have not received any correspondence in regards to Council’s land sale or a DA proposal at 3 High Street.

“We’ve owned our unit since July 2022, yet have received no

correspondence on this matter at all from the council.

“They (Nambucca Valley Council) have been instructed of our email address for rates and all notices since last July, and we’ve received the same by email,” said Mr Perkins.

Residents are worried this development not only severely impacts on neighbouring properties, but increases the number of residents within a small area, putting added pressure on infrastructure projections such as sewerage, population, stormwater, and traffic/ parking on High and Hill Streets.

“The DA proposal as it has been submitted has a disastrous effect on our amenity, overshadowing, privacy, and land values of myself and the adjoining residents in particular 1 High and 1 Hill Streets,” said Mr Pleasance.

Hill Street resident Nicola Lewis, who is new to the Nambucca Heads community, is devastated at the proposal.

“I think this development shows little respect for the beauty and culture of the area,” she said.

“If this goes ahead, I’ll be looking directly into a wall of verandas, five units, the overshadowing of my property will be extreme, and will reduce the outside amenity of my lifestyle, and outside use of my property.

“Back in October there was a massive landslide next to my home that council has done nothing about, and now I find a development literally on my doorstep that will potentially

State Government faces backlash from local councils

q It’s been a long and winding journey for Nambucca Valley Council yet, four years after the State Government announced a review, Council still waits for a decision on the handover of the old Pacific Highway.

THE State Government is facing a backlash from local councils due to the lack of action on the transfer of the old Pacific Highway.

“It has taken longer to sort this issue out than it did to build the new highway!” said Nambucca Valley Mayor Rhonda Hoban OAM, referring to the years-long wait for a review decision.

The Nambucca Valley Council is one of a number of councils awaiting the outcome of the review and transfer process.

The Council has had the maintenance of the old highway on its agenda since the northern section of the upgraded Pacific Highway opened in July 2016.

At the time, Cr Hoban expressed her concern about the costs involved in managing an extra 30 km of tarred road along with fourteen major concrete structures, and the burden it

would add to Council finances, which would inevitably affect ratepayers.

In January 2017 proposed arrangements were outlined for the handover to Council of the Pacific Highway between Warrell Creek and Urunga by the Roads and Maritime Services, which was at the time the New South Wales Government agency responsible for building and maintaining road infrastructure and managing the day-to-day compliance and safety for roads and waterways.

The RMS was dissolved on 1 December 2019, when Transport for NSW took over the responsibility. Negotiations continued in good faith until early 2019 when the State announced there would be a review of the handover process.

Four years later, there is still no resolution and local roads remain in a state of suspension, awaiting action.

There is a lack of certainty about the impact that decisions relating to transfer and reclassification will have – what level of service and funding will be provided for maintenance, renewal and upgrading, for instance?

And of course, the big problem for Council is not being able to make long-term plans on community projects.

It’s difficult to make important decisions on funds allocations without knowing the extent of support that will be offered by the State to maintain the old highway, and a timeframe for when the handover will take effect.

In August 2020, the Nambucca Valley Council and the Bellingen Shire Council made a joint submission to the State Government in an effort to achieve some progress on the matter, but it has had no effect.

and she emphasises that Council can’t afford to take on assets that are not in good condition.

The cost to Nambucca Council is estimated at $266 million in total liability.

Nambucca Valley Councillor

David Jones understands the pressures being put on Council at present.

"The Council and community are now seeing the pressure that

growth and change are having on our community.

“I believe the whole community needs to be engaged in a discussion of just what we want the Nambucca

Wormo’s Shave Off raises over $4500 for Cancer Council NSW

Council and put a figure up which I thought was a bit high, $2,000 for growing ya hair,” he said.

“YOU don't realise how hot it got with all that hair and now it's gone it does feel great,” said cancer survivor Colin ‘Wormo’ Wormleaton after his fundraising Shave Off saw his tresses tumble to the ground.

The cooling cut took place at Nambucca Heads Island Golf Club on Saturday 4 March.

Having grown his hair for fourteen months in a bid to raise $2,000 for Cancer Council NSW, on the final day the funds raised hit $4,500 and then some more.

“To my surprise and support from Nambucca Heads Golf Club together we raised $4,515…boom, go Parra,” the delighted Wormo told News Of The Area.

“The shave day was fantastic with my family and golfing friends and just having a good ole laugh and a beer with everyone.

“It's funny how I made my decision to grow my hair to raise money for the Cancer

Happy to be proved wrong and find the total more than double his high ask, Wormo is justly proud.

Mrs Wormo, Nelly Wormleaton, told NOTA she’s “very happy the hair has left the building”.

Wormo’s relatives made it a memorable and musical family affair on the outside deck with Nelly playing the saxophone and nephew Ayrton on the double bass, while his nieces Sidney, six, and Leila, four, took around a

donation box.

For grandson Henry, it was the first time he had seen Wormo without his thick mop and bushy beard.

The eight-month-old was wideeyed and open-mouthed when looking at Wormo after Nambucca Valley Barber Shop’s Nathan Ison had finished with the clippers.

The Shave Off was a jovial and interactive affair with little Sidney helping with the chop.

Comments from onlookers and supporters flowed freely.

Throughout different stages of the shave Wormo was described as: Goldilocks, Rapunzel, Uncle Fester from the Addams Family to an 18th century statesman and even references to characters from the Sons of Anarchy drama series.

The golf club also joined the event, presenting Wormo with a beanie for his shaven head.

Wormo was diagnosed with Stage Four melanoma

on his 50th birthday in September 2015.

Stage four means the cancer has spread to other parts of the body and not just the source.

He has been a recipient of targeted therapy or ‘Magic Meds’ as Wormo calls them.

“He has hit milestone after milestone,” said Nelly.

“We never thought he’d see the girls graduate high school, now there’s been university graduation and a grandson.

“The family motto is: every day is a good day.”

Anti-racism campaigner arrives in Nambucca

PERAMBULATING with purpose towards his ultimate goal in Queensland, long-distance walker and anti-racism campaigner

Peter Elzer will be passing through Macksville on Friday

17 March and arriving in Nambucca where he will spend the night.

If you see a man in a bright yellow T-shirt emblazoned with the words Stamp Out Racism, that’s him - give him a toot and a wave.

He will be up at the crack of dawn on Saturday, leaving Nambucca behind and heading to Urunga for a 9am meet-up with his daughter, Mieke, who will be travelling

down from Casuarina.

They’ve chosen The Honey Place on the outskirts of town to have a hug and a chat, joined by friends from Bellingen and locals who will all be wearing their yellow Stamp Out Racism T-shirts.

Everyone is welcome to join the gathering which will then walk into Urunga town where he will spend the rest of the day, and overnight.

Heading north, Peter will make it to Sawtell on Sunday where he plans a day off, and maybe a dip in the sea.

Peter, who hails from Coffs Harbour, set out on 23 December from Melbourne with a 2022km walk ahead of him to Seventeen Seventy (north of Bundaberg).

His purpose is to bring awareness to racism and ignite a trickle down effect that runs through the generations and communities and turns around to inclusiveness.

A gentle man, Peter doesn’t push his intolerance of racism; he wears his bold yellow Stamp Out Racism campaign T-shirt and people come to him for the conversation as he walks through their town.

With a passion for NRL, Peter says sport has an important role in promoting ideas of participation for all.

“When sport promotes equality, it filters out into the community,” Peter told News Of The Area.

“I was uncertain of how I would be received as I walked through Taree where South Sydney Rabbitohs player Latrell Mitchell lives nearby.”

The NRL player was recently the target of racial abuse by a fan at the Penrith Panthers game on Thursday 9 March.

“I felt a strong connection with the people in Taree; they were very welcoming and expressed an uncompromising view that this doesn’t happen again,” he said.

People can show their support for Peter and interact with him and his campaign by joining the Facebook group Stamp_Out_Racism_2022.

Walking Together exhibition opens at Phoenix Gallery

SATURDAY 25 February was the official opening of the ‘Walking Together: Voice –Treaty – Truth’ Exhibition at Phoenix Gallery and Café in Bowraville.

A crowd of more than 60 people were treated to a deeply heart-felt and inclusive Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony by Uncle Martin Ballangarry.

Carol Clarkson, Julie Byers, Lee Albert, Jaine Rubine and Janet Besancon, the artists who created this

exhibition, spoke of their journey of learning from local Gumbaynggirr Elders.

Janet Besancon acknowledged and thanked Aunty Ruth, Aunty Rita,

Melinda, Kalysia, and Wurinda; Gumbaynggirr women who were part of the consultation process with the artists throughout their creative process to put this exhibition together.

The artwork and installations are both beautiful and confronting at times, promoting emotional responses ranging from joy and wonder to grief.

VIEW club members celebrate International

Women’s Day

ON International Women's Day, March 8, Nambucca River VIEW Club and ladies from Nambucca/ Macksville VIEW Club were joined by Nambucca Valley Mayor Rhonda Hoban for a morning tea at Macksville Ex-Services Club.

On a day for celebrating women and their achievements, Cr Hoban gave an entertaining talk on her journey to lead Nambucca Valley Council as Mayor.

Nambucca River VIEW Club is always on the lookout for new members who want to give back to their community and make new connections with women in the area.

VIEW, which stands for Voice, Interests and Education of Women, is a network of close to 300 clubs and over 14,000 women throughout Australia.

It provides a place for women to connect in the community, enjoy social activities, and develop lasting friendships – all while supporting the work of children’s education charity, The Smith Family.

Nambucca River VIEW Club President Lyn McGuigan said this

year is the perfect time to join VIEW as social events are back on the calendar after a hiatus due to the pandemic.

“We have had so much fun organising upcoming events for our club this year, including a trip to Hobart for the National Convention.

“These always feature fabulous dinners and speakers, and are a great way to hear about how we help children and young people through The Smith Family.”

VIEW is the largest community sponsor of the charity’s Learning for Life program, which provides students with financial, educational and personal support.

Lyn says this is crucial, particularly in the current economic climate.

“We have all been hit by the rising cost of living, be it power prices, food or petrol.

“But these rises have had an even greater impact on those already doing it tough.

“Parents shouldn’t have to choose between putting dinner on the table or buying their child a uniform for school.

“This is why it is so important that we can help children experiencing disadvantage with their education,” Lyn said.

Nambucca River VIEW Club currently supports the education of three students through the Learning for Life program, ensuring they have what they need for the school year.

“We are keen to add another to this number this year,” Lyn said.

In addition to their ongoing support of The Smith Family, Nambucca River VIEW Club hosts a range of social events including fashion parades, high teas and walks.

“We are always looking for women of all backgrounds and ages to join us and look forward to welcoming new faces at our next monthly meeting,” said Lyn.

Anyone interested in becoming a member can call Lyn McGuigan on 0423 386 230 or visit www.view. org.au for further information.

The next Nambucca River VIEW Club meeting will take place at Nambucca Heads RSL Club on Monday 27 March at 11 for an 11:30am start.

Please phone Lyn by the previous Thursday to let her know of your interest in attending.

Charlie Batt publishes second book

NAMBUCCA Heads High School

student Charlotte Battiston, who writes under the pen name Charlie Batt, has launched the second book in her Imagine series.

The book, ‘Imagine: A Long Winter - Part 1’ was published in print and eBook in the first week of March 2023.

Fifteen-year-old Charlotte is a talented young woman who is on the autism spectrum.

She loves storytelling and drawing and has put her talents into writing the Imagine series, as well as creating the original covers.

The book’s synopsis states: ‘It's the last few days of Autumn and Winter Time is imminent.

‘Charlie Neon Imagination goes on a quest to the White Land with her pal, Bucky, to find Quil, the eldest brother of a family that once had three siblings.

‘But they won’t be the only ones going.

‘When shy and broken-hearted Surviving Mind Ryan Cyan is discovered after being banished by Queen Scarlet, Charlie and Bucky decide to help him find his future’.

Having written the first book, ‘Imagine: A Wild Civilization’, which was published in December 2021, Charlotte was in flow state and completed Book 2. Her editor was amazed to see that this second book was over

q Author Charlie Batt with her writing tools, her iPad and iPad pen she uses to write and draw her covers.

100,000 words, which is the size of a full-length adult novel.

To make it a more manageable size for junior fiction readers, Book 2 has been split into Parts 1, 2 and 3. The second part which will

be published in April 2023.

Two sentences to describe this great adventure: ‘Charlie Neon Imagination and her friends, Bucky and Surviving Mind Ryan Cyan, continue on their quest to find Quil.

‘Will they succeed despite the adventures they encounter on the way?’.

The prolific writer is currently writing the rest of the series, to be published in due course.

Beyond becoming a children’s book author, Charlotte’s work has been noticed by the education world.

Just recently in February, Charlotte's editor, author Annie Seaton, who is also Charlotte’s Nan, was contacted by an English teacher at Arthur Phillip High School in Parramatta.

“He was seeking permission to use Charlotte's book as an example for Year 7 students to show them that ‘young people have lots of opportunities’,” Annie told News Of The Area, adding, “‘If they do their best, there are many things

they can achieve’, the teacher said.”

The class at Arthur Phillip High is creating eBooks for their projects and they are now studying Charlotte's book.

When asked how she felt about her book being used as an example for students in another high school, Charlotte told NOTA, “I honestly feel very happy because those students will know me and see what I have achieved.

“I will be having a Zoom meeting with the class in Sydney and they will be able to ask me questions.

“I believe we are never too old, or too young or too ‘different’ to shine.

“When you believe in yourself, you can do it,” she said.

Charlotte believed in herself and has created an amazing series of print and eBooks.

She has also created the original digital covers, hand drawing the characters and settings on her iPad.

“Certainly, an inspiring achievement for a fifteen-year-old high school student,” said Annie.

THE Tigers travelled to Urunga for round 3 of Pennants last Saturday looking to bounce back from a heavy loss at Sawtell the week before.

David Johnson's rink was a seesawing affair with the scores locked at 19-19 through 16 ends.

The home side, aided by a huge game from their skip,

Special mention to Tracey Armes who had a blinder in her first game in a month.

Adam Laird's new look crew were also embroiled in a tense battle with the score 11-11 after 14 ends.

The remaining three ends were all claimed by the Tigers to take the rink 23-17 and a very important 62-60 win on the master board.

Well done to all players who have participated thus far in a campaign that has yielded two wins from three away games.

Club

WELL, I’ve been away for four weeks, and what’s happened at our club?

There have been lots of busy people making improvements and we are acting on our plans to improve the club premises and facilities to make this a centre of family and community activity.

Our bar staff are very happy with the new floors in their work area, and Reece is literally cooking up a storm in the kitchen with his new staff.

There are plenty of happy faces in the kitchen and outside with guests enjoying a fresh new menu.

Outside, Zenith Roofing are finally replacing the

damaged roof, which will enable us to also fix outstanding issues inside the club.

And, as well as all that, a start has been made to fence our family entertainment area on the Nissan/Blackford Green.

When I popped down to the club last Saturday the club was jumping - lots of people inside and our Men’s Pennant teams playing as well.

I’m sure Grumpy will let you know the results.

The vibe was fantastic, and it's something we aim to build on.

Our first Jack Attack Program has finished, and I’d like to thank everyone involved in both organisation and playing for making this

a terrific new experience for our usual bowlers as well as newbies.

The overall winners, who received a great trophy created by Aaron Cedelland,

were Brendon, Michelle and Doug. We hope more people

will join in when we run this event again later in the year. And now to the Ladies’ bowls.

Social Thursday bowls is in full swing again and we are currently running the Ladies Major/Minor Club Championships on Tuesday mornings (or other days when our busy ladies are unavailable Tuesdays).

The results so far are:

Round 1 C. Davis and K. Porter def D. Mann and P. Fletcher 28-9; J. Cedelland and E. Flemming def M. Duffus and N. Blackford 19-12. Rd 2 M. Flagg and M. Smith def A. Johnson and S. Seckold 18-17; J. Cedelland and E.

Flemming def K. Dale and A. Duffus 18-15; B. Jones and M. Dwarte def J. Haigh and T. Ryan 26-14.

Top junior teams to play off in cricket grand finals

THE region’s best junior cricket teams will be crowned this weekend with the Coffs Harbour District Cricket Association’s junior grand finals set to be decided.

Sawtell Stingers will look to cap off a tremendous undefeated season when they take on the Macksville Bulls Blue in the under 12s grand final.

Bellingen/Dorrigo take on the Coffs Colts in the under 16s grand final this afternoon.

Minor premiers Sawtell Stingers booked a place in the under 12s season decider with a dominant 9 wicket win against the Coffs Colts in their semi-final at Toormina Oval.

The Stingers restricted the Colts to 8/43 in their

T20 after Coffs opened the batting, with Joshua de Groot the best of the Sawtell bowlers taking 2/2 from his 2 overs.

Macksville Bulls Blue qualified for the under 12s grand final with an eight wicket win against Bellingen/Dorrigo Green in their semi-final at Macksville.

Bellingen/Dorrigo Green opened the batting and posted 6/74 from 20 overs.

Macksville successfully chased it down with Hunta Peterkin finishing on 23 not out from 12 balls.

Coffs Colts made the under 16s grand final with a 9 wicket win against the Macksville Bulls in their semi-final at Macksville.

Colts held Macksville to 8/65 from 20 overs, with Harrison Mulhearn taking 2/6 from 2 overs.

The Colts chased down the total in the 12th over with James Lobb top scoring with 39.

The Colts will now play Bellingen/Dorrigo in the grand final, after Bellingen/ Dorrigo beat Nana Glen by 7 runs in their semi-final at

Dorrigo.

Bellingen/Dorrigo opened the batting and posted 7/143, with Taylor Gilbert and Lincoln Kellett both making half centuries.

Bellingen/Dorrigo successfully defended their opening total with Nana

Preferential voting

DEAR News of the Area, AUSTRALIA is very fortunate to have preferential voting as it means you don’t risk wasting your vote when you vote for an independent or small party candidate – your second and later preferences mean your vote will still count if your preferred candidate’s first preference vote numbers are low and they are eliminated.

When we vote for the House of Representatives in a federal election, full preferential voting is the system, meaning that for a vote to be valid a number indicating our preferences is needed in every square.

In NSW state elections, optional preferential voting is allowed for the Legislative Assembly, meaning that placing the number 1 beside the candidate of our choice is

Glen finishing at 5/136, with Blake Botes top scoring with 42.

Nana Glen White and Macksville Bulls were scheduled to face off in the under 14s grand final this week.

Nana Glen White beat

Nana Glen Blue by 6 wickets in their semi-final, with Zane Guthrie having an unbelievable spell of 4/2 for Nana Glen White.

Macksville Bulls beat the Sawtell Storm by 2 wickets in their semi-final in Macksville.

sufficient for a vote to be valid and numbering the other squares is optional.

NSW is now the only state using an optional preference system.

To make sure our vote is fully effective in an optional preference system, we need to fill in our preferences beyond our first preference.

Unfortunately, about half of voters don’t number all their preferences and this

favours the prominent candidates.

We can support the candidate we cheer for, but if they are unsuccessful then marking our preferences means we still have a say in which of the leading candidates gets elected.

Regards, John GRAY, Coffs Harbour.

HYPOTHETICAL Taking a Legal Look

What is a Statutory Will?

EMILY suffers from a severe disability, affecting her cognitive abilities and preventing her from making a will.

Emily’s condition also means that she will likely have a reduced life expectancy.

Emily receives a substantial inheritance from her uncle, on her mother’s side.

Emily’s mother has been her sole carer since birth and has dealt with the challenges arising from her disability.

Emily has had no contact with her father, nor his side of the family.

Emily’s mother is concerned about what will happen to Emily’s inheritance, if she passes-away without executing a will.

If Emily passes-away without making a will, the laws of intestacy which apply in her circumstances, mean that her biological father would receive half of her substantial estate.

Her mother believes that Emily would not wish for this to occur and that such a result would be incredibly unjust.

However, legislation permits a “statutory” will to be made on Emily’s behalf, by way of an application to the Supreme Court of New South Wales.

The application requires the briefing of a barrister and the filing of supporting affidavits from family members, care workers and medical professionals.

It is not a cheap process, but given the size of Emily’s inheritance, her mother views the costs as warranted.

A solicitor, specialising in these matters, drafts a will on Emily’s behalf, making provision for her mother and her two siblings.

The draft will form part of the application to the Court.

Emily’s father is served with notice of the application and he does not participate.

Ultimately the Court grants the application and a will is made on Emily’s behalf on the basis that in the Court’s view, if Emily had capacity to make a will, she would make a will primarily making provision for her mother and also her siblings.

Dorin’s Draws By

We're paying to have our natural heritage trashed

DEAR News Of The Area,

ALL around our region, our irreplaceable native forests are being smashed as they struggle to recover from the Black Summer bushfires.

Forestry Corporation's destructive operations have contributed to the ecological crisis we currently face.

Right now they seem to be hell bent on annihilating core koala habitat in a grab to pillage the forests before the up-coming election.

In the next twelve months, seventeen percent of state forests in our area are slated for intensive logging.

Only four to eight percent of this timber is turned into sawn logs; much is burned on the forest floor or shipped to China as wood chips.

Is it worth driving the koala to extinction for this?

Mature native forests alone can sequester the carbon needed to mitigate the worst effects of climate change and are less flammable.

They also assist in climate moderation, maintaining soil quality and clean waterways and provide vital rich biodiversity.

Meanwhile, we taxpayers are paying the bill for the destruction of our natural heritage.

In the past four years, we've forked out $107.7 million to cover the losses of this industry.

A just transition package for affected timber workers would cost little more.

We already derive most of our timber needs from sustainable plantations, which run at a profit.

So, who does profit from the current system?

Is it that the corporations who benefit pay political donations to the parties who are willing to rip us off and devastate nature so they can spend up big on their election campaigns?

I cannot agree with Col Nicholson (Letters, News of the Area, 7 March) in his defence of the RFAs.

The NSW Audit Office, the Natural Resources Commission and the NSW Government’s vegetation clearing figures all confirm a regulatory failure to achieve environmental outcomes.

The Greens and The Animal Justice Party want to protect our native forests and they are not corrupted by the corporate donations game.

On 25 March, vote for our ecosystems, our forests and our wildlife.

Regards, Mary FORBES, Eungai Creek.

The Voice is about inclusion, not separateness

DEAR News Of The Area, DES Foley (NOTA 10.3.23) is right to ask the question: “what sort of a country are we leaving to our grandchildren?”.

But rather than focus on climate change, which poses an existential threat to the kind of planet that our grandchildren will inherit, he bizarrely homes in on the Voice referendum.

To suggest that the Voice represents and benefits an “interest group”, not dissimilar to the cashed-up lobby groups which influence government policy on a daily basis, is a gross

Respect our democracy

DEAR News Of The Area,

THE lead up to an election in Australia is like the lead up to the Melbourne Cup.

People who show little interest in either horse racing or politics now become expert pundits and purport to having extensive knowledge of those subjects and then dig in.

I believe the reality is that

we are barracking for teams.

Being members of a sport crazy nation is affecting our objectivity.

We should be looking at policies and the qualifications and the abilities of politicians.

We should be more concerned about outcomes.

Could it be that our tribalism is the mechanism by which we vote in governments that we soon become disillusioned with.

Remember the old adage we get the governments that we deserve.

We need to move past the old school sports carnival situation of barracking for red, blue, green and whatever other colour house your school happened to have.

Changing your vote or changing the government shouldn’t be feared.

A change of government is like a health check for our

misrepresentation of the message of the Uluru Statement from the Heart, and deeply disrespectful towards our First Nations people.

They are not an “interest group”.

They have inhabited this continent for millennia.

It is they who, since colonisation, had their lands stolen, their people slaughtered, their children taken away and their rights denied.

It is beyond time for the white colonisers to recognize the wrongs of the past and to

democracy.

Would all the details of the robot debt policy and Scott Morrison’s secret ministries be known without government change?

Change is an opportunity to pass a lens over what has been happening in the halls of power.

If you have any misgivings about an incumbent government’s performance then an argument can be made for scrutiny.

If after scrutiny no problem is detected then

DEAR Jasminda,

MY husband has decided to learn another language through an app.

Every time he gets something correct, the app makes an annoying ding.

The sound is driving me insane.

Dear Rachel,

Before we delve into your husband's annoying antics, let's pause to congratulate him on learning a new language.

There are many cognitive and social benefits to learning a new language.

Studies show that people who are bior multi-lingual have improved memories, enhanced problem-solving skills and superior listening skills (all the better to hear those annoying dings you mention).

If his phone is frequently dinging, it's a sign that he is getting a lot of correct responses, so that's a plus.

The dinging sound no doubt also gives your husband a little buzz of pleasure, which is probably just the positive reinforcement he needs after your constant loud sighs every time he makes some progress.

If, despite these benefits, you are unable to cope with the noise any longer, may I suggest that you either move to a separate room, wear some noise cancelling headphones, or alternatively disable the motivational messages, haptic feedback and sound effects on his phone thereby taking away one of his few pleasures in life.

give First Nations people a direct say in the issues that affect their lives.

A Voice to Parliament, enshrined in the constitution, will create that framework.

It threatens nobody, and offers a unique opportunity for Australians to reset the dial, and to begin the process of healing, truthtelling and treaty.

This is not about “sentiment, activism or propaganda”, as Des Foley would have us believe. Rather, it is a long-overdue and clearsighted proposal which should be supported by all Australians who are committed to fairness, justice and reconciliation.

We owe it to First Nations people, and to all Australians, to seek a resounding YES vote in the upcoming referendum.

You know the one?

return them to power at the next election.

What have we lost?

In truth, both major parties have a lot of overlapping policies and have become more alike than they used to be.

The current furor over taxing superannuation is a classic example of this.

Scott Morrison proposed the very same policy when he was in power.

Maybe we should consider another old adage when we are casting our vote.

The one about doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

If you are dissatisfied in anyway with the current situation then cast your eyes over the alternatives, their policies, objectives and their qualifications.

You may like what you find.

Regards, Mark INGLEBY.

MINISERIES: IN OUR BLOOD

ABC, 8.30pm

The poignant music of the ’80s is the entrancing extra character in this musical drama based on the play by Adriano Cappelletta. Starring Matt Day (Rake), Tim Draxl (A Place to Call Home, above), and Jada Alberts (Mystery Road), it’s a moving and at times surreal fourpart drama exploring a pivotal moment in Australia’s history when the AIDS crisis hit. Embracing hope and the power of the individual, it chronicles how this country became a world leader in AIDS prevention. Tonight’s premiere kicks off on election night, 1983: in a crucial turn of events, for gay man David (Draxl) it means a job as the senior adviser to the Health Minister.

When a series has confidently pedalled through a whopping 18 seasons like this one has, it’s something of a cultural phenomenon. The older generations are traditionally WDYTYA fans, but this season there’s perhaps a shift to nab a younger audience – a new generation of ancestry buffs. A younger cast of participants, including comedian Joe Lycett and soccer player Alex Scott, have traced their family tree and the trend continues tonight with Pixie Lott. The singer-songwriter is keen to confirm the family story that she has Italian ancestry from Verona, but instead she discovers ancestors battling poverty and hardship in London.

an electrifying intensity. Set in Boston “some time ago”, it’s about two ace cops – the undercover Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) and the high-ranking Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon, above) – whose contrasting moral fibre has set them on a collision course. Jack Nicholson plays the Irish gang boss Frank Costello, while Mark Wahlberg, Ray Winstone and Martin Sheen are the impressive peripheral players in this water-tight, Oscar-winning thriller.

Grumpy ’s Grumble: Nambucca Heads Bowling Club

PENNANTS were played at home last Saturday with both sides at home.

The number 2 side played Kempsey RSL who have won the section quite a few times and are a red hot

side. We were running neck and neck in the middle of the game but they powered on and we seemed to run out of breath.

Maybe a few more laps of the bar might help.

Kempsey won 71-47.

The boys are at home to Park Beach tomorrow and will need all the support they can get against another side that should be playing in the no 1s.

The no 5s played Sawtell and came away with a big win 83-33.

Wizza’s side won 41 - 11 so that really pushed up the board. That is 3 wins in a row and they travel to Bowra tomorrow and if they have any chance of winning the section these are the games they need to win, away from

home.

There is a list on the board for the Easter Saturday Shoot Out so organize your triples side and get your names down early as it will fill fast.

Yesterday we had St Pat's Day and it was a raging

success. Turn around Triples was played.

For the novices that means everybody played every position and the last 2 ends were different to what we normally play. GRUMPY

or whether you’re someone who loves to get physical, or you’re someone that wants to jump, there’s a position for you on the field,” she said.

“Girls who have played

other sports, it’s really easy to transition across to AFL and give it a crack because there are so many different skills that are transferable.

“The best thing about footy is the team you’re in and I think we’re really lucky

on the North Coast to have such amazing clubs and such strong Youth Girls programs.

“Give it a try, come down to a come and try day or training with a club, and you’ll find you absolutely love it just like I do.”

The third and final session in the Force Girls

Development Clinic will be held in Sawtell on Sunday, 16 April from 10am to 12pm. Keep an eye on AFL North Coast socials for more details.
