THREE years ago the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock Music and Art Fair was celebrated in the Nambucca Valley by recreating the vibe with a spectacular outdoor music event at the Macksville Showgrounds called Woodstock in the Valley. What was initially intended to be an annual event fell victim to the pandemic and it was feared that Woodstock in the Valley would become a memory.
stage left a couple of forces of nature, local ladies Dianne Potter and Vicki Starr, and through their efforts, Woodstock in the Valley is back.

Free ‘Work Pathways for Young People’ event to be held in Nambucca Heads
FROM Page 1
Macksville and Nambucca Heads High Schools, are hosting a free Youth Week employment event on April 27 at the Nambucca Heads RSL Club.
At the ‘Work Pathways for Young People’ event, parents and carers of students from years 9 to 12 who live in the Nambucca Valley will be able to meet a range of employment and education support services, local employers, and school staff who can provide
information and insights about different approaches to career and job pathways.
A range of speakers will present on ‘preparing young people for work’, and the types of support and pathways on offer.
“Parents can have a lot of influence on their child’s career choices but can feel overwhelmed and under equipped to guide their young person into a good career,” said Kerry Grace, CEO of RDAMNC.
“High School Careers
Advisors are equipped with great skills and knowledge but are underresourced in terms of time available to connect with local employers.
“Employers are desperate for workers but are often unsure how to connect with young people and the supports available to them.
“We want to bring these key youth employment stakeholders – parents, employers, careers advisors and support services –together into one room to help facilitate the knowledge sharing and connection that is so important to get our local young people into good jobs,” said Kerry.
‘Work Pathways for Young People’ will be held on 27 April at the Nambucca Heads RSL Club. Doors will open at 5:00 pm for a 5:30 pm start, followed by a light supper after presentations. Entry is free, please register at https://events.humanitix. com/youth-week-employmentevent.
If you are an employer or a service provider and you would like to host a stand at the event, please contact Sara Runciman of RDAMNC at media@rdamnc.org. au or phone 0409 580 741.
Women in Art exhibition opens at Matilda Street
By Karen GRIBBIN
THE Nambucca Valley Women’s Business Network (NVWBN) will be launching its ‘Women in Art’ exhibition on April 29 at Macksville’s Matilda Street
Gallery.
‘Women in Art’ will feature original creations by local female artists in a range of mediums.
“The exhibition will feature a broad range of artistic media including watercolour, acrylics, mixed media and photography,” said Libby Foster, Nambucca
SMART MARKETING
Valley NVWBN secretary and exhibition organiser.
“This is our first art exhibition as a committee, and we have been thrilled with the response by local artists.
“We’re expecting a full house at the exhibition opening,” said Libby.
NVWBN President Sara Runciman said the NVWBN committee and members believe strongly in supporting, empowering and inspiring local women.
“Since 2017, we have held regular events featuring local women, including breakfast and evening networking events with speaking guests, and last year we
held a women’s writers panel at Macksville Library, which was a great success,” Sara said.
Women in Art will be held at the Matilda Street Gallery, 26 Matilda Street, Macksville.
The opening event on April 29 kicks off at 3 pm with music by Alicia Parry, and bubbles and nibbles for artists and guests.
This exhibition is sponsored by Nambucca Valley Women's Business Network (NVWBN) and Diana Does Books.

The Mid North Coast’s grooviest festival, Woodstock In The Valley is back
FROM Page 1
Making a return to the Macksville Showgrounds on Saturday 13 May 2023, from 12 noon until midnight, this year's Woodstock in the Valley promises to be bigger and better than the original, with a lineup of talented music acts, market stalls, food stalls, craft workshops, and much more.
Woodstock in the Valley is a tribute to a significant event that shaped our music and culture forever.
The musical lineup includes the Steve Edmonds Band performing his Jimi Hendrix Show, as well as Loose
Cannons, Creedence and Friends, Not Real Young, Leroy and the Rats, Raven, Casey Alexander, Lighthouse Duo, Critical Mass, Georgia Cortez Rayner, Lucy’s Sky, and Pash.
Woodstock in the Valley is a community focused, not-for-profit event designed to develop and nurture the local entertainment industry and promote Nambucca Valley tourism and retail.
The event is supported by the Australian and NSW Governments and is a Bushfire Community Recovery and Resilience Fund project through the joint Commonwealth/State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.
Kemp pledges to help Mid North Coast reach its “full potential”
MEMBER for Oxley Michael Kemp was last week notified of the NSW Electoral Commission’s distribution of preferences for the NSW State Election 2023.
“The official distribution of preferences were called at 1pm in the NSWEC Oxley Electoral Office and I am extremely honoured to be elected as the Member for Oxley,” said Mr Kemp, who contested the recent state election for the NSW Nationals.
“I will proudly work hard to serve the people of Oxley and advocate for
them and their interests with the dedication, energy, and enthusiasm they deserve from their local MP.
“I’m grateful to the Oxley community for their support.
“As a country boy I will remain pragmatic and be their voice in Macquarie Street.
“Working together we can help the Mid North Coast to reach its full potential as a thriving and prosperous regional community.
“I will identify opportunities to improve our electorate by fighting to ensure our region receives its fair share of funding from the NSW Government.
“As local member, I will continue to pursue opportunities for the projects that are important to our region, and that have a clear local mandate from the
voters of the Oxley electorate.” Mr Kemp won 47.5 percent of the final primary vote, and 62.84 percent of the two party candidate preferred vote.
Nambucca Valley Council, Healthy North Coast and the Nambucca Valley Rotary Club are also behind this special event.
Tickets can be purchased by visiting www.woodstockinthevalley. com and are only $10.00 each with children under sixteen attending for free.
For those who want to make a weekend of it, on-site camping can be booked by also going to www. woodstockinthevalley.com.
Camping will allow attendees to fully immerse themselves in the festival atmosphere and make the most of the full day of music and activities on offer.
There will be a bar on site and organisers advise that BYO alcohol is not permitted.
Co-organiser Dianne Potter told News Of The Area, “There will be prizes for the grooviest outfits so get your hippy gear on and come along to this celebration of music, culture, and community, and a happening that promises to be a fantastic day out for people of all ages.”

HOUSEHOLD BULKY GOODS COLLECTION 2023 (THERE ARE NO DESIGNATED COLLECTION POINTS IN ANY RURAL AREAS)
Coffs Coast Waste Service will be conducting household bulky good collections from residential properties.
There will be no collection points other than from the frontages of properties on the collection routes that receive a bin service and only residents of those properties can put waste out for collection.
In previous years residents in rural areas have dumped significant quantities of waste at unauthorised sites. This illegal dumping increased the bulky goods collection cost by more than $40,000 which is excessive and not sustainable. Should the illegal dumping continue, Council will reconsider the provision of a bulky goods collection services within the valley.
If you live on a rural property which does not receive a weekly bin service at the front of your property or you have opted to take the bins to the collection route, there is no bulky goods collection service available. You must dispose of your bulky goods at the Nambucca Waste Facility.
If you live on a collection route, please visit www.coffscoastwaste.com.au or refer to the MyBin App for specific collection dates relating to your property. For further information please contact Coffs Coast Waste Services Hotline on 1800 265 495.

Teenage artists make mark on local music scene
By Andrea FERRARI
A TRIO of teens from the Nambucca Valley are making waves in the local music scene, cutting their first recordings at ValleySounds Studios in Nana Glen earlier this month.
Ned Ambrose from Valla, Beau Hussell from Nambucca and Jesse Falzon from Eungai, along with Della Baldwin from Toormina, are the founding members of indie/alternative rock outfit Blind Pretty.
Beau mans the drums, Jesse is on rhythm guitar and lead vocals, Della takes on bass and vocals and Ned plays lead guitar.
With the band’s first tracks now laid down, Jesse Falzon told News Of The Area, “The recording studio was a very different experience for the band.
“It’s a lot of fun at times, when you can really just get to the core of the song and tweak every little thing, and very frustrating at times, when you’re half an hour into trying to lay down a guitar part.
“But at the end of every session we could all feel the songs growing and taking on their own sound, which is a very, very special thing to witness when creating something that can mean so much to you.”
The young musicians said the opportunity to work with ValleySounds owner Pete Dyball was great; with Pete showing them how things are done in the studio, and providing industry tips and tricks that will stick with them for life.
“Pete was great at listening to the ideas we had and bringing them to life.
“His input to the songs was greatly appreciated.”
Blind Pretty recorded two songs which they hope to release “very soon”, promoting them through their Instagram account @ blind_pretty, along with merchandise and music videos.
“Working towards an EP has commenced,” announced Jesse.
Blind Pretty officially formed in the summer of 2022, with the band members having met earlier that year at Coffs Harbour Education Campus.
None of them knew each other at the time but met through music class and began jamming together.
Throughout the year they decided to give a shot to “being a real band” and chose the summer holidays to be the launch of the band in a genre of music that takes inspiration from
RECLASSIFICATION OF LAND IN HILL STREET NAMBUCCA HEADS AS OPERATIONAL
Nambucca Valley Council has resolved to exhibit a proposed resolution to classify the recently acquired Lot 1 DP 1288566 (formally a part of the road reserve in Hill Street, Nambucca Heads) as operational land in accordance with Section 31 of the Local Government Act 1993.
The proposed resolution is on exhibition from 17 April 2023 until 4:30pm 15 May 2023. Written submissions are encouraged during this period. Relevant details can be inspected at Council’s Administration Centre at 44 Princess Street, Macksville between 8:30am4:30pm Monday to Friday.
Please note that any submission may be incorporated in a Council business paper or otherwise publicly disclosed. Submissions should be addressed to the General Manager, Nambucca Valley Council, PO Box 177, Macksville NSW 2447 or council@nambucca.nsw.gov.au

artists such as The Backseat Lovers, Spacey Jane and Sam Fender.
They used Instagram as a platform to get their name out there by doing acoustic covers of well-known songs.
“That helped us get a good amount of coverage on the Coffs Coast,” said Jesse.
“We have a strong ambition to one day be able to rely on the band as a full-
time job and create music for a living.”
Their first official gig as Blind Pretty was at the Macksville Laneway Festival in mid-March.
Since then, they have supported The Terry’s and played with The Moving Stills at Coffs’ Jetty Beach House to an enthusiastic audience.
“Performing live is such a special thing to be able to do.
“Watching a crowd interact with your music is such a thrilling and exciting experience.
“When you look around at your band mates and they’re all just loving every moment and having the time of their lives is a pretty beautiful thing to be a part of.
“All the hard work pays off when you see people enjoying your music and when your song is blooming into this energetic track you always wanted it to be,” he said.
Now Blind Pretty are focused on taking every opportunity they get.
“We want to grow the band and fan base to further spread our music to reach the ears of people, and to enable a connection between our audience and our art.”
The band members are currently in the process of writing an EP, and say they hope to put all their spare time and the majority of their profits into writing and recording.

Paw-some visitors at Riverside Gardens
RESIDENTS at Riverside Gardens Aged Care have been lucky enough to have some regular paw-some visitors. Choco, a Lab Kelpie and his lovely owner, Nicki Smith, who is a volunteer affiliated with Paws Pet Therapy, are visiting residents fortnightly.
“I was looking for a meaningful way to contribute
to the community, now my children are a bit older, when I saw a book on pet therapy on my daughter’s shelf and thought it would be a perfect fit for me - and Choco too,” Ms Smith said.
The demand for Paws Pet Therapy services has exploded since COVID-19.
They are a small
organisation, whose people, and pooches, are all volunteers that generously give up their time to help people with a range of needs – from loneliness, illness to assisting children with reading.
Paws Pet Therapy founder and CEO Sharon Stewart said, “We have a fantastic team of over 100 volunteers,
from Goulburn to the Blue Mountains, Sydney to the South Coast, who work hard and have one common goal - to help dogs make people happy.”
Choco, a four-year-old Lab Kelpie, travelled all the way to Paws Pet Therapy headquarters in the Southern Highlands to get special training and be assessed.
“Pets can be assessed online but I wanted to make sure Choco was fully trained and ready.
“He did lots of exercises, including a simulated hospital
room with a patient, and I was so proud when he passed and got his certificate,” said Ms Smith.
Choco started at Riverside Gardens in February and engages with residents beautifully.
He adjusts his energy levels to suit the person he’s with and is very gentle with them.
“Choco is proving to be a big hit among the residents,” said Kerrie Cue, Recreational Activities Officer at Riverside Gardens.
“He brightens up so many people’s day - staff included!”
Ms Smith said her and her canine sidekick are enjoying the experience.
“So many people love their dogs, and really like it when others love their dogs too – Paws Pet Therapy is really a wonderful way to do something for your community and feel good too.
“We’re really enjoying the experience of visiting people at Riverside Gardens and making their days brighter,” Ms Smith said.

Council backflips on operational land classification
By Karen GRIBBIN
THE controversy surrounding the classification of the former Hill Street Road Reserve in Nambucca Heads continues and was again discussed in Nambucca Valley Council chambers last Thursday, 13 April.
At Council’s 30 March meeting, a motion was put to councillors ‘that Council exhibit the proposed classification of Lot 1 DP1288566 – Hill Street, Nambucca Heads as operational land in accordance with Section 34 of the Local Government Act 1993’.
At the conclusion of that meeting, all present were of the understanding that the motion had lapsed, and as Council did not resolve to proceed to an exhibition period, the land (Lot 1 DP1288566) would automatically become community land at the expiry of the prescribed period under section 31 of the Local Government Act 1993.
Council reconsidered its position last Thursday when Mayor Cr Rhonda Hoban again put forward a motion that the matter be put on exhibition, allowing a site inspection by councillors, and enabling the reserve to be classified as operational land at the expiration of the exhibition period if councillors voted to do so.
After a number of speakers for and against, Councillors voted on the Mayor’s motion, with five for and three against.
The resolution to classify Lot 1 DP1288566 as operational land will now be on public exhibition.
Prior to any decision on the classification of the land, a site inspection will be arranged for all councillors.
Developers Vista Projex
Pty Ltd have development plans for a site at 3 High Street, Nambucca Heads which exceeds Council’s LEP and need to purchase additional land from Nambucca Valley Council to complete it.
If the land in question is rezoned as operational, it can be sold to the developers.
In July 2021, 3 High Street sold for $1.41 million, and in August 2021 Vista Projex Pty Ltd made an application to Nambucca Valley Council requesting a part road closure of Hill Street.
On 14 October 2021, Council agreed to the partial closure of the road.
Mr Bernie Perkins, a spokesperson for the residents of High Street, spoke against the motion, telling the meeting that considerations of the environmental or social impacts of the road closure had not been taken into account.
“Council was already in possession of a geotechnical report, dated March 2021, that listed all the landslips in this shire, and particularly those in the town of Nambucca.
“Front and centre is the landslip at 1 Hill Street.
“That was your own report, on your website, when your people applied to close that road, saying there was no environmental damage.
“I believe councillors were not in a position of having all the facts - they had no site inspection.
“The subsequent attempts to make it operational land, and the likely sale of it to a developer has been clearly stated by Council as its intent several times, and is a recipe for an environmental disaster.”
High Street resident Mr David Pleasance also spoke against the motion, pointing out that the potential loss of view and amenity from future development on the site was
problematic, but not the greatest issue.
The impact that the potential development would have on property value was of greater concern, in Mr Pleasance’s case calculated to be around $200,000.
“It is not just about a loss of view, it is about a severe valuation loss of our properties.
“It is about me losing my economic security.”
Mr Pleasance called for transparency about the Council processes that had led to this point, including any potential agreements made by Council with the developer.
“The business paper said they were going to prepare a report for Councillors on the processes that have gone before.
“That (report) is not before us.
“We can't be entirely sure what those processes are.
“We want to see the process, so that if council does prepare something for you to vote on, on the process, we would like to have some input.”
Mr Pleasance said consultation with neighbours had been lacking throughout, and that councillors had not been given enough information before undertaking decisions on the matter.
“If this decision goes ahead and the land is sold, the developer will gain 490 sqm of extra floor space because he gets this land.
“In my book that's not fair, it's not reasonable, it's not the Australian way and it certainly doesn't pass the pub test.”
Mr Bruce Mason from Vista Projex Pty Ltd and Jim Booth from Casa Koala Architecture spoke at last Thursday’s meeting in favour of the recommendation.
As the discussion

was primarily around a motion to exhibit the proposed classification of Lot 1 DP 128856 – Hill Street, Nambucca Heads as operational land, and not any future development of the site, objectors believe the development should not have been presented in the meeting or Council’s business papers as it was irrelevant to the discussion.
Mr Mason said that Lot 1 DP1288566 was very steep, describing it as a “hillside, covered in weeds”, and did not fit the zoning requirements of community land.
“Community land is land to be used for parks, recreation areas etc,” he said.
“Clearly this tiny piece of land could not qualify as community land under that definition.
“We ask that Council classify Lot 1 DP1288566 as operational land.”
Mr Mason told Council Chambers that his family had bought property at 3 High Street two years ago and had enquired with Council about purchasing Lot 1 DP1288566.
“They (Council) said that 1 High Street had bought the three metre strip from Council some years earlier.
“We asked if we could do the same and were encouraged to do so.”
Councillor Jones then asked Mr Mason to outline the communication that occurred with Council as to the process of potentially procuring the land.
“He (Council staff member) put that process in motion, he said it needed to be first discussed with the planning department.
“We said we would set up a meeting and he (Council staff) rang back and said that the planning department was in favour, so you don't need to have a meeting and we will progress it to the next stage.”
Mr Jones then asked Mr Mason if it had been made clear to him by Council staff that there was no guarantee of a successful road closure, or subsequent purchase of the land.
“I don’t recall,” Mr Mason said, “I assumed it had to go through a process.
“In the event, the process was gone through.”
After a similar follow up question, Mayor Hoban then warned Cr Jones over “leading through questions that could potentially result in litigation”.
“All I am saying is that I hope that due process was held,” Cr Jones said.
Mr Mason then clarified that Nigel Peterson, a Council surveyor at the time, had explained that the proposal to partially close Hill Street and sell the land needed to be advertised.
An advertisement was subsequently placed in Nambucca Valley News Of The Area highlighting Council’s proposal and inviting submissions to Council’s surveyor Mr Peterson.
Mayor Hoban then said that most road closures managed by Council occurred in rural areas, affected no other properties, and as such attracted no objections.
“What occurred in this instance was that there were objections but they were never reported back to Council.
“There was a potential issue with process.
“That is not something Mr Mason had any control over.
“I am absolutely satisfied that reporting those submissions back to council was not something our surveyor knew that should have done.”
Cr Susan Jenvey then again asked Mr Mason for further information on how Mr Mason came to his agreement with council, a line of questioning eventually shut down by Mayor Hoban, who said, “We as elected members of the council are to quite a degree responsible for this current situation, and I will openly say, in hindsight, we should have asked more questions.
“In terms of an agreement, it was a resolution of the council - that is what the agreement was.
“If we’d seen the objections of residents, we may well have made a different decision,” said Mayor Hoban.
Mr Reece Slingsby, the owner of a vacant lot in Ridge Street, told News Of The Area that he and his wife were not notified until February this year of plans for a multistorey apartment building to be built at 3 High Street, significantly impacting the view from their property.
“I feel let down by the council, there has been little information surrounding this matter, and there has been no transparency in the process.

REMOTE rural and regional communities across Australia can apply now for grants up to $20,000 for communitydriven mental health and wellbeing projects, through FRRR’s In a Good Place (IAGP) program.
Community groups are invited to apply for up to $20,000 to support activities
that empower locals to talk, connect, learn, participate and foster help-seeking behaviours.
FRRR and CCI Giving are offering $250,000 in IAGP grants, a boost of $50,000 on prior grant rounds, thanks to a new five-year partnership.
Jeremy Yipp, CCI General Manager, General Insurance Claims and Chair of CCI Giving, said that since partnering with FRRR in 2018, CCI Giving has seen the direct impact
made to 53 mental healthfocused projects funded across remote, rural and regional Australia.
“Seed funding is critical for the smaller community projects so that they can develop a proof of concept for their activity model and see what works and what doesn’t, and why.
“Without assistance from grant programs, such as In a Good Place, these projects may never have the opportunity to
really get off the ground and reach their full potential,” Mr Yipp explained.
Jill Karena, FRRR’s People Programs Portfolio Lead, said that, now in its sixth year, the In A Good Place program continues to provide vital funding to support the mental health and wellbeing of communities across remote, rural and regional Australia.
“Projects funded through the In a Good Place program typically bring people
together, sometimes to heal, always to learn.
“The program has a definite and important role to play in supporting rural communities in reducing the stigma surrounding mental health and help-seeking behaviours.
“It helps to bring mental health and wellbeing out in the open – making it OK to talk about and OK to reach out and ask for help,” Ms Karena said.
Applications opened on 12 April 2023.
There is a two-stage application process.
To get started, a brief Expression of Interest must be submitted no later than 5pm AEST, Wednesday 17 May 2023.

Cancer Council seeks ‘people people’ as volunteers
By Andrea FERRARI
CANCER Council NSW is looking to recruit volunteers to work at the Mid North Coast Cancer Institute in Coffs Harbour.
The volunteers are primarily based in the chemotherapy treatment room where they chat with patients, family and carers and offer support, as well as providing them with information about Cancer Council services.
“We are looking for volunteers who are ‘people people’; positive, respectful and with good communication skills, who are happy to take the time to listen to people and direct them to Cancer Council services and information,” Louise Jeffs, Cancer Council
NSW told News Of The Area.
“Those undergoing chemotherapy are experiencing a difficult time.
“Not all patients have friends and family who can be by their side and so the volunteers can provide companionship.
“Just a cup of tea and a friendly chat or laugh can make such a difference to a cancer patient.”
This is not a counselling role, it is a role that helps to link patients and carers to relevant information, support services and resources.
Dave Funnell started volunteering with Cancer Council at the Mid North Coast Cancer Institute in 2016.
Dave said he enjoys having the time to talk with the patients and family and
give them a cuppa.
The patients say they enjoy interacting with the volunteers.
One patient, Robyn, recently called Cancer Council to say thank you to the lovely volunteers in the Treatment Room.
“Dave always makes me laugh and that is really something as I am usually not feeling very well,” she said.
“He has such a great sense of humour.
“Thank you to all Cancer Council volunteers.”
The feedback Louise receives from the volunteers is that they enjoy their work, they find it rewarding and like working with the staff at the Cancer Institute.
“It is a privilege to have the conversations with patients
and hopefully help the time they have in the Treatment Room go a little faster,” said one volunteer.
The volunteer roles are available between 10am and 3pm on weekdays and can be half or full shifts.
Louise said volunteers would ideally be available on a weekly or fortnightly roster.
Training on Cancer Council services is provided.
If you would like to find out more about the role, please call Louise on 6659 8414, email louise.jeffs@nswcc.org. au or visit https://volunteers. cancercouncil.com.au/ engagement/?id=91dfb25eb3ce-ed11-a7c7002248933b28

SWIFF braces for record crowds
WHAT began as a 2015 plan by a husband-and-wife duo to bring more new movies to their local community has ballooned out to something nobody could have anticipated.
Eight years later and the Screenwave International Film Festival, known better as SWIFF, has earned the Coffs Coast the title of now being home to the largest film festival in regional Australia – and it opened last night, running for the next sixteen days.
The 8th Screenwave International Film Festival opened its 2023 lineup of over 140 film screenings and special events with the NSW Premiere of legendary Australian director Rolf de Heer’s new film The Survival of Kindness to a sold-out crowd at CHEC Theatre.
Cast and crew from around Australia travelled to launch this year’s festival with Festival Directors Dave Horsley and Kate Howat, and SWIFF’s Festival Patron – Australian screen icon Jack Thompson.
With SWIFF’23 having already broken the previous presales record, and Festival Directors now anticipating the previous all-time attendance record to be broken, theatres on the Coffs Coast are bracing for big crowds this year –particularly with festival being the first experience for punters wanting to check
out the newly upgraded Bellingen Memorial Hall, which has been closed since 2020 for a multi-million-dollar facelift.
“Our taste in movies is broad, and SWIFF’s line-up each year reflects that,” said Artistic Director Kate Howat.
“We love a popcorn comedy as much as we love a good French doco or Korean drama.
“Curating the festival is about finding a balance there, so festivalgoers have a super fun time but also push their own film tastes a little further with each festival,” Kate said.
SWIFF’s eighth festival program will present 80-plus different feature films from over 30 countries across the world – including the Australian Premiere of Brandon Cronenberg’s new satire of the rich and famous in Infinity Pool (Alexander Skarsgard, Australia’s Cleoptara Coleman), programmed alongside Cannes award-winning favourites EO, Joyland, and The Eight Mountains, to biting satires and hilarious comedies
Give Me Pity!, Ruben Ostlund’s Palme d’Or winner Triangle of Sadness, and Owen Kline’s cringe comedy Funny Pages, plus Berlinale Jury Prize winning documentary Nelly &
Nadine, and frozen Russian coastline surf epic Corners of the Earth: Kamchatka.
Local feature The Road To Patagonia has already proven a favourite with festivalgoers, having sold out its first session, with SWIFF also screening the World Premiere of a new short film, Return Chute, about one of Australia’s last video stores –Bellingen Video Connection.
In addition to the cast and crew of The Survival of Kindness, SWIFF’23 festival guests include Australian conservation icon Bob Brown (The Giants), Afghani refugee activist Muzafar Ali and prolific Australian
director Jolyon Hoff (Watandar, My Countryman, NSW Premiere), debut feature director Luke Cornish and breakdancer Patrix (Keep Stepping, includes performance), along with Gumbaynggirr activist Birrugan Dunn-Velasco and Australian Tent Embassy founder Gumbaynggirr
Elder Uncle Gary Williams (50th Anniversary of Ningla-a-na) in a First Nations-led talk about what’s changed in 50 years since the Australia’s civil rights movement was founded.
Actor Damon Herriman (Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, Breaking Bad) will provide a few words of guidance at SWIFF’s 2023 Nextwave Youth Film Awards, screening the World Premiere of 28 short films made by young Australians under 25, before sitting down for a fireside chat with Festival Director Dave Horsley about Herriman’s work in Hollywood for SWIFF’s Industry Connect networking event.
Film screenings and events will be hosted at the CHEC Theatre, Jetty Memorial Theatre, and the newly upgraded Bellingen Memorial Hall from April 20 to May 5.
This year’s festival will close on Friday May 5 with the Regional Australian Premiere of Ari Aster’s new Joaquin Phoenix driven dark comedy, Beau Is Afraid.
SWIFF is proudly supported by presenting partner Squealing Pig Wines.

Jazz musician Ian Date plays Macksville live and solo
By Andrea FERRARI
IAN Date, a master of the guitar, promises a “highly entertaining show” when he performs live and solo at Macksville Ex-Services Club on Sunday 30 April.
“It’s a journey with the guitar,” Ian told News Of The Area.
“I’m going to play a selection.
“Some original pieces, and pieces inspired from different parts of the planet and different eras.
“Songs from Ireland where I’ve just been living for the past 20 years, there’s a tune from Norway, a South American tune, some gypsy-based
pieces,” he mused, “from ancient Celtic airs to American blues and roots, Jazz standards, New Orleans style and Arabic as well as original compositions.
“Things I’ve collected over my travels and experiences that I’ve put on the guitar.”
It’s a journey that wends its way through a planned program as well as spontaneous pieces that come up.
“I’m a jazz musician so improvisation is always a part of my shows.
“I’ll also sing a couple of songs,” he said, laughing.
“I’m not the world’s greatest
singer but I do sing a few songs so the audience can hear some novelty music.
“I like to have a bit of funny stuff in there.”
Ian learned to play the guitar as a boy growing up in Macksville in the 1970s.
Since then, he has gone on to carve out an international career for himself, appearing at festivals and events from Tasmania to Iceland, the South Pacific to Asia, South Africa and Europe, worked on more than 70 albums as a leader or a sideman, composed for film and television.

with players like James Morrison, Martin Taylor, Robin Nolan, Tommy Emmanuel and Hank Marvin of The Shadows fame.
His focus has been on the art of jazz guitar, both from a gypsy jazz standpoint as well as classic stylings in the Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery traditions.
Firmly rooted in the jazz tradition and equally at home on the acoustic or electric guitar, Ian is a master and a mentor of the instrument.
Enjoy an afternoon of virtuoso guitar playing, stories and songs from far off places and scenes at Macksville Ex-Services Club.

It felt like only yesterday as the old songs, friendships and memories came flooding back.

Young bands enter Boom Clash Rockstar contest
By Andrea FERRARI
YOUNG bands have a new competition which aims to elevate their exposure and support their emergence into the music industry.
Boom Clash Rockstar is the brainchild of Brett Pattinson, frontman for Aussie ska band The Allniters, and music industry expert Grant Hilton.
Together, their goal is to encourage and mentor the next generation of music performers.
Created to help young artists find their voices, giving them real-world experiences and shining a light on youth mental health, Boom Clash Rockstar is open to school students aged fourteen to 22 residing in New South Wales.
Local Coffs Coast bands already signed up include Blind Pretty, Temperate and Purple Disturbance.
With little to no exposure to the industry for school leavers, especially for musicians in regional areas, Boom Clash Rockstar aims to provide young bands with hard-to-come-by industry exposure and experience as they work to make a name for themselves in the Australian music landscape.
Industry insiders connected to Boom Clash Rockstar will provide bands mentoring on their music, stagecraft, song development and production, all while gathering valuable feedback from judges and audience voting.
The prize for the winning band is a spot on a major festival main stage, with the possibility of signing a worldwide digital recording deal.
Speaking with News Of The Area, Boom Clash Rockstar co-founder Brett Pattinson said, "Playing music
can be a form of selfexpression and help process emotions or experiences.
“As a result, music can be a powerful tool for promoting youth mental health and wellbeing.
“While playing in bands and making music is fun, it is a business and can be brutal.
“We hope with this program, we can help young bands find their voice, what makes them unique and stand out from the crowd, and how to prepare them for the industry business."
q Temperate, an energetic rock band from Coffs Harbour.
q Coffs Coast band Purple Disturbance will take on the Boom Clash Rockstar contest.
Committing to the fact that music and visual arts have always gone hand-in-hand, there is also an art section.
If you are creative and love your music, but stage performance isn't your thing, you can enter one of the categories in Boom Clash Rockstar's Art Competition and help out your band-playing mates.
The Art Prize consists of four prize categories – The Poster Prize, The Photography Prize, The T-Shirt Prize and The Multimedia Prize.
104.1 CHY FM Station Manager Angie Vaughan told NOTA the station is proud to be associated with this competition and initiative.
"The station avidly supports local musicians,” she said.
“We received many music links and CDs from young artists.
“An initiative like Boom Clash Rockstar will assist these young, promising artists in navigating the
music industry, songwriting and industry development.
“Killing Heidi and Silverchair are just two of the many successful bands from Australia's regional areas.
“I know there is some real talent here in Coffs, and I'm excited to see and hear what these future rockstars have to offer."
Boom Clash Rockstar is proudly supported by Twenty10, GLCS, Headspace, Raise, Studios 101, Inside Out, Big Deal Touring, Niche Advisory, Studio 57, Abbey Road Studios, Stage Door Productions, Offbeat Operations Entertainment Agency, Sports Marketing Australia, SOHO Media Group and 104.1 CHY FM.
The Coffs Harbour/Northern Rivers final will be held at the Hoey Moey on Saturday, 17 June.

Worms, waste and household wellness
scraps by using simple composting systems and strategies.
Facilitator Chelsea Hands
By Jen HETHERINGTON
ON Monday 17 April visitors to the Stuarts Point Community Hall were confronted with a collection of wriggling kitchen scraps, though the free event was conducted for positive educational purposes, and there were no offensive sights or odours to endure.
In conjunction with Midwaste, Kempsey Shire Council held the workshop from 1 to 3pm which focused on educating householders on the benefits of utilising kitchen
from Midwaste Port Macquarie, also a committed beekeeper and community gardens coordinator,
commenced her delivery by displaying a working worm farm and explaining basic advice and recommendations for creating your own healthy family farm.
The audience comprised a dozen enthusiasts, some of which had travelled from Kempsey and Macksville, and were keen to get the low down on general composting ‘do’s and don'ts’, even without the help of a dedicated worm farm.
One local, John, a seasoned composter commented, “Think of a rainbow, use every colour, not just potato peels.”

• C - Create nutrient rich alive soil for your garden for FREE
• P - Prevent avoidable green waste going to landfill (reducing methane and leachate)
• R - Recycle food scraps, kitchen waste and green waste are valuable resources With basic yet comprehensive teachings, Chelsea’s aim to educate did not fall on deaf ears, with many attendees vowing to expand and share their growing knowledge. Further workshops are planned focused on ‘Bees Wax Wrap’ making and ‘Eco Cleaning’. For more info and details on future workshops contact Kempsey Shire Council and Midwaste.

Nexus Gallery welcomes new exhibitions
By Andrea FERRARI
NEXUS Gallery at The Old Butter Factory in Bellingen is getting back to earth with its two new exhibitions.
The Main Gallery is showing the Coastal ClayMakers' ceramics exhibition titled ‘20’ in celebration of their 20th birthday this year.
The Studio Gallery houses Gail Sue's exhibition of paintings titled ‘Memories and Landscapes’.
The exhibitions open at 1pm on Sunday 23 April and run until 19 May.
Founded in 2003, Coastal ClayMakers began life when a group of graduating TAFE ceramics students were keen to continue to meet regularly on a social basis, and to continue learning together.
While the group continues to attract TAFE students, it welcomes anyone with an interest in ceramics.
Members have a vast range of experience, including professional potters, teachers, students, home hobbyists and those just starting their love affair with clay.
“Coastal ClayMakers provides members opportunities to come together throughout the year to learn about and practise all aspects of ceramics, including hand building, wheel throwing, glazing and firing,” Coastal ClayMakers President Wendy Phillips told News Of The Area.
“Monthly informal gatherings include ‘Members Make’ days, where attendees can work on their own projects in the company of like-minded folk.
“Other meetings include weekend workshops; for example, in August, visiting artists Johanna deMaine and
Tatsuya Tsutsui will share their skills and knowledge with participating members.”
The exhibition of members’ work is simply called ‘20’ and shows a diverse range of works by the local Mid North Coast ceramic artists.
In Gail Sue’s ‘Memories and Landscapes’ exhibition in the Studio Gallery, we see the result of the artist inspiration from a saying by Robert Henri.
‘The most vital things in the look of a landscape endure only
for a moment. Work should be done from memory; memory of that vital moment.’
“I am pleased to present ‘Memories and Landscapes’, an exhibition in which I have explored a variety of approaches to the landscape genre,” Gail said.
“Among the highlights in this exhibition are new works such as ‘Blooming Wattle’ inspired by our wonderful floral emblem, which I painted from a memory of golden
foliage flashing by as I drove along the road.
“In contrast to another recent piece, ‘Hush Hush Who’s There’, in which I explore the unexpected relationship between the natural world and myth.
“This painting is still recognisable as a landscape, but comes from a place in my imagination, in response to my surroundings,” said Gail.
The exhibition opens on Sunday 23 April 2023, at the Nexus Gallery, with an official gathering from 1pm to 3pm.
“I will be in attendance and will be happy to answer any questions anyone may have regarding my work,” said Gail.
Conservatorium and is active on the music scene up and down the coast.
She describes her music as "Entertaining, engaging… my music touches people's hearts and brings joy to their soul".
Friday night’s concert, Jazz By The River, features Ian Date playing solo guitar before Heather Rose takes the stage solo on the piano.
Ian and Heather will then team up to jam on some jazz and blues together.
Doors open at 6.30pm and the show starts at 7.00pm.
“Bring your picnic along, nibble at your own grazing platter and enjoy the beautiful setting,” invited Heather.

Record numbers trial for North Coast Force teams
By Aiden BURGESS
THE NORTH Coast Force representative program has gone from strength to strength, having announced its strongest junior representative teams yet.
For the first time over 200 players trialled for teams, with the record number of players nominating to trial driving selection standards.
A further landmark for the program is the inclusion of a Youth Girls 15 team, which means that 2023 will see AFL North Coast fielding teams in each male and female age group for the first time.
North Coast Force teams will feature in six age groups in 2023; under 13s, under 15s, under 17s, Youth Girls
13, Youth Girls 15, and Youth Girls 17,
It was only twelve months ago that the Force added a Youth Girls 13 team and this rapid expansion is a true reflection of the exponential growth of girls AFL footy throughout the region.
Community Football Manager Paul Taylor said that the program is becoming the envy of other regions.
"The strength of the Force program has grown year on year from both a quality and quantity perspective, and this is drawing new players to it each year," he said.
"There's no doubt the link to the Sydney Swans Academy gives the program extra standing in many people's eyes, but the work that our
Force coaches are doing is the key to ensuring that our players are improving and making their mark within the club scene and talent pathway.
"With former local players involved at AFLW, VFLW, SANFL, and various state league levels, our region is gaining a reputation as a breeder of talented players.
“This opens doors for the next generation of players, and our aim is to ensure that they're best prepared to grasp the opportunities that come their way."
North Coast Force teams will compete at the Hunter Challenge Cup on 10-11 June, as well as the Northern NSW Championships in Coffs Harbour from 8-10 July.
North Coast Force teams will take on other regions at the two carnivals, including the Central Coast, Hunter Metro, Hunter Country, North West, and Illawarra.
Group 2 Rugby League season kicks off this weekend
By Aiden BURGESS
THEY’VE waited eight months for their season to begin.
Now this moment has finally arrived for the region’s rugby league players, as the latest Tooheys New Group 2 Rugby League season gets
underway this weekend.
Coffs Harbour Comets kick off their season at home when they host defending premiers South Grafton Rebels at Geoff King Motors Oval.
The Comets will look to bounce back this season after not playing finals last year.
Last season’s preliminary finalists the Woolgoolga Seahorses take on the Nambucca Heads Roosters at Coronation Park.
The Seahorses were one win away from the grand final last season, while the Roosters were wooden
spooners in their return to Group 2 competition.
Sawtell Panthers also hit the road for Round 1 when they travel to take on the Grafton Ghosts.
The Panthers missed the finals in their return to Group 2 competition in 2022, while
the Ghosts made the second week of last year's finals series.
The Bellingen Valley/ Dorrigo Magpies make their return to Group 2 after a twoyear absence when they host the Macksville Sea Eagles at Bellingen Park.

Strikers ready for season opener
By David WIGLEY
NAMBUCCA Strikers men and women are raring to kick off the 2023 season on Saturday 22 April.
Women’s first team coach Rhys Jones provided insights into what's happening at the Strikers.
“Senior men’s coach Ricky Welsh is very optimistic about how the men’s team will fare this season,” he said.
“After some major changes in the team with new and exciting players joining the club plus junior players making their senior debut.
“The feeling around the team is that a new dawn is looming.
“Especially with a new breed of younger players being available to play in the next few years, the future looks very bright indeed,” said Rhys.
A new team leadership group was announced at an
open training session. Coach Ricky Welsh and his assistant Jenna Welsh named Zac Baldwin and Brody Faulds as joint captains this year.
Women’s coach Rhys Jones is pleased to inject pace and skill into the squad.
“The Women's team who came so close last year to making the finals have recruited well in the off season,” Rhys said.
“The team is very well balanced, we still have a strong defence, however more
encouraging is the recruitment of pace and skill up front giving our consistent goal scorer and new captain Sarah Mander some support up front.
“Both teams have been training hard since January and are ready to go for the

OUR beautiful course was almost back to normal after the preceding series of rain events.
Generally dry conditions were experienced by all players although some strong winds blew during the early part of the week.
It would be fair to say that scores from all competitions were not what could be expected as playing conditions were generally very good.
The Golden Sands Tavern have been a valued long term sponsor of our club and we thank them for their sponsorship this week.
On Tuesday 43 players enjoyed an individual stableford round and Paul (Woofty) Maxwell (27) played consistent golf registering a winning score of 38 points.
“Woofty” was observed leaving the club with his customary package in hand and a huge smile on his face.
Ashton Herbert (14) was runner up with a very creditable 37 points.
The ball run down went to 31 points on a countback and ten players won prizes.
NTP’s were won by Steve Carr 5th, Keith Elphick 7th, Rodney Kinnear 8th, Ross Morpuss 13th, Stu Johnston won his own prize on 15th and Trevor Wilson-Brown won the pro pin on 18th.
The ladies played an American Foursomes event on Wednesday and attracted 42 starters.
Reports received suggested that they all enjoyed this event and found it a nice change from individual stableford.
Sue Barnett and Thea Kimber returned a net score of 70.62 to win on a countback from Judy Boyle and Maz Mc Nally.
Third place went to Kerry Naylor and Joy Green with a net score of 74.25. The ball prizes went down five places to 77.25.
NTP’s were won by Kerrie Jackson, Ann Antcliffe and Thea Kimber.
Ann Antcliffe featured again, winning the pro pin on 18th.
Unfortunately the scheduled Brian Burns challenge was cancelled but the event remained a stableford aggregate with 92 starters.
Some confusion ensued as some players (the writer included) seemingly ignored the instructions on the score card and assumed that the event was a single stableford.
No harm was done as the scoring system paired the players up when cards were entered.
Winners on the day were Les Mohr and Jeffrey Vanderwyk with a combined
score of 72 points. “
Runners Up were Steve Doherty and Bruce Mason with 71 points.
Eleven pairs won ball prizes with the run down going to 60 points on a countback.
The longest putt went to Don Wills on 2nd and NTP’s were won by Stephen McNeil on 5th, Drew Glasson on 7th, Roy Louis on 8th, Bruce Mason won the “Pizza this” prize on 13th, Jack Collins won Stu’s ball on 15th and Andrew Bagust won the pro pin on 18th.
Saturday emerged as a beautiful calm and sunny day which was ideal for golf.
The course had totally dried out and all rough areas had been mown (thanks Peter) and the course looked great.
No one enjoyed the day more than Stuart Johnston (8) who returned a great score of 41 points to win Division one.
The notable thing about this round of golf was that Stu birdied four of the par three’s and made par on the other one.
Great golf Stu.
Runner up in this division was a visitor from Wallacia Golf Club Andrew Supple (12) with 35 points.
Division two was won by a visitor from Bargara Golf Club Ken Whan (16) with a very good score of 39 points.

ROUND 7 of Grade 5 pennants
action saw the undefeated Sawtell Blue side come to the Den on a beautiful Saturday arvo, save for a pesky crosswind.
A victory for the visitors would likely wrap up the section so the Tigers knew
there was only one possible outcome. Neil Pollard's crew, who have been near untouchable since forming, drew their most formidable opponent to date and battled their way to a 16-14 win, winning twelve ends.
Adam Laird, with a new look squad due to forced changes, was under the pump early but fought hard to down
their opponents 24-17, taking ten ends in the process.
David Johnson's side were again dominant, largely due to an inspired performance by the skip, overcoming a 0-7 start to win 27-12, only losing six ends.
With that 67-43 scoreline on the master board, the Bowraville Tigers moved to the top of the ladder with
upcoming season; with some very impressive performances in the preseason both sides will be extremely competitive this season,” said Rhys.
The 2023 season kicks off with both the men and women playing at home in Coronation Park, Nambucca Heads on Saturday 22 April.
The men kick off at 1pm
against the Boambee Bombers followed by the Women at 3pm versus Orara Valley Dingoes.
“Come down and see some great community football, there is still room in the squad for men’s players so anyone interested can contact the club on coaching@ nambuccastrikersfc.com,” enthused Rhys.
q
Yuri Ylinen (18) was runner up with 37 points.
Bill Mann (21) showed some great form in division three returning a score of 39 points to win from Mark Stuckey (23) with 35 points.
Ball prizes ran down 22 places to 32 points on a countback.
David Wilson won the longest putt on 2nd and NTP’s were won by Murray Ingram on 5th, Warren Fuller on 7th, Paul Ryan on 8th, Stu Johnston on 13th, Daniel Wassens on 15th and the Pro Pin went to the par 3 specialist on the day Stu Johnston.
On entering the club house Stu was smiling widely as he knew that he was a very welcome collect from his playing group.

Swimming North Coast swimmers numbered 36 and came from eleven clubs, competing in 82 events.
Swimming North Coast swimmers won one medal and swam in three A finals and seven B finals.

Most of these events sported between 100 to 200 competitors.

“Following on the success of the Australian Multi Class Championships, these Championships were one of the biggest ever held and a massive number of competitors competed over
the club pairs title kick off with Jim Harter and Tracy Armes taking on Adam Laird and Neil Pollard on a gloomy Autumn day.
As I wasn't present at the game, all I can report is the final score was 24-15 to Adam and Neil which would indicate a spirited performance by their opponents.
Well done to all.
At time of writing, there is another match scheduled for this Sunday between Chris
the seven days,” she said.
“Just to qualify for this event is an achievement and is the pinnacle of the swimming calendar for these young swimmers.
“These swimmers performed very well in extremely tough competition.”

HYPOTHETICAL Taking a Legal Look
By Manny WOOD
Expert’s ‘belief’ is not enough
CHERYL contacts a local solicitor and arranges an urgent hospital visit so that her father, Bill, can make a Will.
Bill is suffering from terminal cancer and is in palliative care.
When the solicitor arrives at the hospital, he meets with Bill alone and is satisfied Bill has the mental capacity to make a new Will.
Bill explains to the solicitor that he only has two daughters, Cheryl and Jan, and that he wants Cheryl to “have the lot” because he hasn’t spoken to Jan for 20 years.
The solicitor returns later that afternoon and is still satisfied that Bill has the capacity to execute his will, despite the fact that Bill appears to be rapidly deteriorating.
The solicitor requests that one of the doctors write a letter attesting to Bill’s capacity.
Dr Jo writes a letter on the Hospital’s letterhead that states “I, Dr Jo believe that Bill has capacity to make a Will.”
Unfortunately, Bill dies the next day.
Two months later, Cheryl begins to administer Bill’s estate and Jan contests, alleging that Bill’s last Will is invalid because he did not have testamentary capacity.
Jan adduces alternative medical evidence stating that someone in Bill’s condition at the date the will was signed could not have had capacity.
Cheryl relies on Dr Jo’s letter, which the Court ultimately rules to be inadmissible as it does not explain the basis for her ‘belief’ that Bill had capacity.
Cheryl is unable to adduce any other evidence that Bill had capacity at the time the will was made and Jan’s claim is successful.
Had the solicitor ensured that the letter from the doctor was admissible, the Court may have accepted that Bill had capacity and his Will would have stood.

Who do politicians really represent?
DEAR News Of The Area,
THIS is a question we need to ask ourselves on a regular basis.
There are many examples throughout the world where politicians embroil themselves in self interest with little regard to the welfare of their constituents and lack of understanding or care of their responsibilities.
Australia, fortunately for us, is lowly rated but is still included.
Almost every day in the media we see the destruction of life in Ukraine and their conflict with Russia as well as the constant trauma with the mass shootings in the US.
I question the motives behind the megalomaniacs who are front and centre in these issues.
Are they really doing what's best for their people or just satisfying their hidden personal agendas without a care for the loss of human life?
In the US this year so far there have been 131 mass shootings (this figure will be incorrect by the time this letter is printed) with some 500 people wounded and 193 killed. Do the maths.
More than one every day.
During the last week there have been two shootings of people who simply went to the wrong address.
Some US Presidents have pleaded with Congress to do something about gun control but the politicians are more concerned about their position
than the people they represent.
A support for greater gun control there would surely have repercussions at the ballot box.
A fine example of doing what's best for self rather than others.
I was disgusted to see Donald Trump a few days ago with his comments about his re-election prospects.
He said quite clearly and openly that if you vote for me “your guns will be safe".
I often think how fortunate we are to live in Australia where we can feel safe and do not have to live our daily lives in fear.
I find it hard to comprehend someone like Trump pushing his own personal agenda.
I can only imagine how the parents of young children who have lost their lives in shootings might feel.
I have never been a supporter of John Howard but must give him credit for his initiative in the gun buy back scheme in 1996 after the Port Arthur massacre where 35 lives were lost.
Doing what is right and not what is popular is a lesson that all politicians can learn.
Shortly Australia will face a referendum concerning ‘The Voice’.
This is a real opportunity to bring together all Australians but I question the motives of the opposition, both Liberals and Nationals.
David Littleproud, Nationals
DEAR Jasminda,
My friend uses a filter when we are in photos together which makes her look completely different, but it makes me look different too.
I don't wear a lot of makeup and yet, in photos she posts on social media, I have impeccable eyebrows, bright lipstick, and my teeth are much whiter.
I'm happy in my own skin and just want to be seen in photos the way I am in real life.
Flawed. Lillian R.
With retouch tools you can erase every blemish.
The problem is that sooner or later people who use filters have to head out into the real world, or go on a date, and no amount of soft lighting is going to remove those dark shadows and crowded teeth and the bit of Duck Pad Thai stuck to your double chin.
Then there's the other issue you've uncoveredthe filtered by association issue - where everyone in the photo gets a glow up whether they want to or not.
Dear Lillian,
There was something quite fun about those early filters where everyone sported dog ears or devil horns or myriad other embellishments because we all knew they were fake (except for one ex-partner of mine whom I suspect really did have devil horns, but that's another problem for another day).
Now, though, filters can make you look like a sultry Hollywood star complete with narrow waist, peachy complexion, and teeth so bright they glow in the dark.
leader, stated months ago when the Voice was first mentioned that they would not support it without even participating in any consultation.
Peter Dutton has also indicated his opposition.
Do these politicians really believe by not supporting this move they are really doing what's best for Australia or do they simply not want Anthony Albanese and the Labor government to succeed
This is particularly fraught when it's a family photo and they are all genetically enhanced with dark eyeliner, perfect brows, false eyelashes and blood-red lipstick: Mum, Dad, little Johnny in his soccer gear, and Bruce the now-emasculated Bullmastiff.
Good on you for keeping it real, Lillian.
Tell your friend to stop posting pictures of you unless you approve of them or else you'll start repaying the favour with an au naturel series.
Carpe diem, Jasminda.
which would obviously increase their popularity.
I applaud Julian Leeser's stance over the Voice in doing what he believes is right and being able to tell his young family that he "stood up for something he believed in". Perhaps more politicians should do the same.
Regards, Bob KENNEDY, Toormina

SUNDAY MIDSOMER MURDERS
ABC, 8.20pm
FRIDAY TRACES
ABC, 8.30pm
Standout performances from a female-led cast help set this crime drama apart from the throng. Embellished with the moody backdrop of a Scottish town and the peculiarities and intricacies of forensic science (don’t mix acid and petrol), this second season has a new case to explore, with all the familiar faces, including Molly Windsor, Laura Fraser (pictured) and Martin Compston, returning. In tonight’s second instalment, Emma (Windsor) and Daniel (Compston) face tough decisions after the end of the trial.

Peace never lasts in Midsomer, but fans wouldn’t have it any other way. In tonight’s second instalment of season 23 – yes, this delightfully cosy detective series has composed intriguing murder plots since 1997 (retirement beckons but don’t fret) – it’s a place of investigation, rather than a destination, for much-loved DCI John Barnaby (Neil Dudgeon, pictured). Challis Court is a swanky gated retirement community set up for former police officers, where the retired criminal catchers dream of relaxing and enjoy their golden years. When a new member of their community, Elaine Bennet (Sabina Franklyn), is found dead, it’s soon apparent this idyll is not all it’s cracked up to be.
I’M A CELEBRITY… GET ME OUT OF HERE!
TEN, 7.30pm
It’s been a bittersweet season
I’m a this year
– while hosts Dr Chris Brown and Julia Morris (pictured) are happily ensconced in South Africa’s Kruger National Park, the “spiritual home” of the series, for the first time in three years, it’s the untraditional pairing’s last hurrah for the foreseeable future, with Brown decamping to rival network Seven in July. Until then, the number of hangry and humbled celebrities in the so-called jungle is starting to dwindle – two more are sent packing tonight in an emotional double elimination – so tune in for one of your last chances to see Morris and her beloved “Docteur” in action.

Roosters’ Star Recruit
to work with in an already impressive roster.
By Mick BIRTLES
ALREADY heartened by the win against the Port Macquarie Sharks in their second trial match three weeks ago, there is renewed excitement at Coronation Park as the Nambucca Roosters announce they have signed former NRL player Tyronne Roberts-Davis to their ranks.
A former Gold Coast Titans player, Tyronne has returned to the Mid North Coast and is thrilled to be wearing the tri-colours in this year's Group 2 Competition.
“I grew up here in Nambucca and it was so good to come back to the Mid North Coast about a year ago,” Tyronne told News Of The Area.
“My Dad, Brett Davis, was in the Nambucca Roosters’ 1996 Grand Final Team so it is a bit of a dream come true for me to be now also playing for the Roosters.”
Well known as a centre and a fullback, it remains to be seen where Roosters Coach Warwick Jones will play his new star signing and now has even more depth
Jones told News Of The Area, “Tyronne is a great addition to the club and has fit right into the culture and attitude toward our football we have built upon from last year.”
Along with bringing speed and experience to the Roosters in attack, Tyronne left the NRL with a 83.3 percent tackle rate and opposing sides will now meet with an additional dilemma as they try to crack the Roosters’ defence.
Having trained under NRL coaches such as Adam O’Brien and Neil Henry it is likely that Tyronne will bring a level of experience to Coronation Park that will filter down to all grades. Round 1 kicks off this weekend with the Nambucca Roosters taking on the Woolgoolga Seahorses at Nambucca Heads.
The U/18s kick off at 12:00 am on Sunday 23 April with the Reserve Grade at 1:10 pm and the First Grade at 2:30 pm.
The Nambucca Roosters Women’s Rugby League Team will also debut this weekend at Kempsey in a game against the Macleay Valley Mustangs kicking off at 1:00 pm.
