to a Neighbourhood Centre for Nambucca
FROM Page 1 Nambucca Valley after a public meeting, open to all, was held on Tuesday 16 August at Nambucca Heads Senior Citizens Hall. An engaged crowd of about 30 local people attended the meeting with the purpose of forming the steering committee to establish a Nambucca Heads Neighbourhood Centre. Concerned residents, some of whom remember the last time there was a local Neighbourhood Centre in the Nambucca Valley, located in Macksville, listened to a range of speakers who informed the group of the historical context, identified community needs and shared information about the smooth-running and busy Coffs Harbour Neighbourhood Centre. An Acknowledgement of Country was given by Nambucca local Fiona. Nambucca Valley local Paul Sekfy has over 20 years experience in community development and Neighbourhood Centres. Paul is also a Board Member of the Local Community Services Association, and spoke about the history of Neighbourhood Centres.Paul shared how the last Neighbourhood Centre in Macksville merged with another organisation and ceased to operate in 2014. To drive this project he encouraged a “coalition of the willing”.He supported the community engagement q The Neighbourhood Centre re-establishment meeting. approach that underpins the philosophy of Neighbourhood Centres, whereby people come together and share their skills, knowledge and experience. Moving forwards, he advised this approach would form the backbone for the reestablishment of a Nambucca Valley Neighbourhood Centre to be located in Nambucca Heads.Community members, businesses and community services in attendance also agreed the re-establishment was not only possible, but achievable.Nambucca resident Karin, whose passion is to provide much-needed in-person services and support in a onestop-shop, received an array of hands from people of all ages and backgrounds, when asking who may be willing to form a steering committee. An established steering committee will now drive this project

Whatforward.the meeting community voiced loud and clear was that a local Nambucca Neighbourhood Centre would provide a muchneeded information, referral and advocacy hub, where people had somewhere to go to be supported to be able to make informed choices about the most appropriate services to meet their needs so they could get help and support quickly. The benefit of such a hub would also be a step towards building a community space where people could connect, and to potentially support an interagency to improve navigation and access to services and ensure that any duplication of service was reduced.Speaking at the meeting, Coffs Harbour Neighbourhood Centre Coordinator (CHNC) Anna Joy described the practical services, activities, information and supports that are provided by CHNC and how these had been designed with the local community to meet the needs in the Coffs HarbourAcknowledgingarea. the dedicated team of volunteers that are the backbone of the Centre in Coffs Harbour, reinforced that Neighbourhood Centres are community members, contributing to and supporting their own community. Anna shared that many volunteer team members enjoyed and valued the work theyShecontributed.reinforced that for many volunteers their contribution matched their personal“Maintainingvalues. a positive environment, where volunteers are well supported, have the opportunity to build skills and knowledge of their community and where everyone is welcome will always provide a key foundation for any Neighbourhood Centre,” said Anna.At the end of the night, people officially registered their interest in being a member of the steering committee with next steps discussed for a meeting to be convened as soon as possible. All agreed that the re-establishment of a Neighbourhood Centre in Nambucca Heads was long overdue and the time to get it happening is now.

THE Mid-North Coast Police District will welcome a new Rural Crime Investigator as part of the biggest increase in police numbers in more than 30 years. Deputy Premier and Minister for Police Paul Toole said the new position will create a unit of two specialist investigators across the region.“Rural crime specialist investigators focus on a range of crime, whether it’s theft of stock, grain or wool, rural arson and fraud, firearm offences, cruelty to animals or trespassing,” Mr Toole said.“These crimes affect farmers, their families and entire livelihoods, so it’s critical we have the support and resources needed to ensure regional communities continue to thrive. “These investigators have lived and worked on the land, and continue to play a critical role in building positive relationships between police and the farming community, as well as supporting victims of crime.”Member for Oxley Melinda Pavey said crime prevention in rural areas is most effective when it involves a partnership between rural people, police and local “Havingauthorities.adedicated rural police officer to our region will mean local landholders have a singular point of contact, who can focus solely on rural crime investigations and prevention,” Mrs Pavey said.“I encourage farmers to report all instances of suspicious behaviour or criminal activities.”
“Since the discovery of Varroa mites at Bucca on 24 July volunteer beekeepers and DPI staff have worked together to inspect several thousand hives,” Mid North Coast beekeeper Glenn Locke told News Of The“NoArea.mites have been detected in the red or purple zones and no hives have been destroyed apart from the hives at the original infected“Everypremises.siteistreated as if it is infected.“Weput on PPE prior to going into a site and follow a strict decontamination process when we leave so that mites are not potentially spread from site to site via the sampling process.” The beekeepers open the hive and locate the queen so that she doesn’t get put into the alcohol wash which kills the 200 - 300 bees that go in. Another person shakes the bees for four minutes and an authorised officer (DPI) checks the alcohol that the bees were washed in for any mites. “This is a generic process used in all biosecurity settings,” said Glenn.Although there have been changes to the notification zone, the existing rules remain in place for the 10km red eradication zones and the 25km purple surveillance zones.Registered commercial and recreational beekeepers impacted by Varroa mite in the eradication zone can access reimbursement payments under the agreed National Response Plan.
By Andrea FERRARI BEEKEEPERS, both recreational and commercial, are sensing a return to normality as their diligence to the Varroa mite infection emergency protocols and the DPI’s surveillance are paying off. Locally the 50km yellow Varroa mite notification zone, located outside the emergency surveillance and eradication zone, has been dropped which will give commercial beekeepers in the Coffs Harbour biosecurity zone some more flexibility with bee movements and management in general.

Rusty Iron Rally returns for 25 year celebration
OVER the years, the Rusty Iron Rally has earned its reputation as one of the premiere vintage and heritage events in NSW. This year the event celebrates the milestone occasion of its 25th Annual Rally, running over 3 and 4 September at the Macksville Showground.“Afewfellow restorers with similar interests formed the Mid North Coast Machinery Restoration Club in June 1994, and have held this event since on an annual basis, with the exception of the last two years due to Covid restrictions,” said Elaine South. The first exhibition by members was at Cassegrain Winery, near Port Macquarie. The Club reached a membership of 55 by March of 1996, covering from Coffs Harbour to Taree. Membership is now over 500. “The first official Rally was held at Timbertown at Wauchope on 23-24 March 1996.“This was incorporated with the events at Timbertown that well suited the old “Themachinery.RustyIron Rally later moved to the Wauchope Showgrounds when more space was needed for the event.“As the popularity and interest grew from all over the country more space was needed for the growing number of those wanting to show off their treasured possessions,” said Elaine. Macksville Showgrounds have now become the Club’s permanent home, enjoying their own Club Shed for meetings, workshops and gatherings of like minded people.Recently an attempt was made to break a long standing world record of the largest number of vintage engines all running for a set time all at the same time. “The challenge was taken up and the club broke the record, and a very noisy one at that!“History waits at every turn at this event, many memories from past experiences, and a lot of information to be given, a huge number of exhibits and displays for all family members of all ages,” Elaine said.Grand parades will take place both days of the Rally, allowing attendees to enjoy learning about the wonders of days gone by. Be there and listen to the engines, smell the diesel fumes, browse the market stalls and swap meet sites, and the pavilion full of interesting collectibles.
RSL NSW President Ray James said commemorating significant moments in our military history is vital to Australia, as people, a community, and a nation. “RSL NSW takes this responsibility incredibly seriously as the custodians of the ANZAC spirit,” Mr James said.“Today we will honour those veterans who lost their lives during battle; returned home wounded, ill, or injured, lost their lives in the years since they returned, and still carry the physical and emotional scars of their service over 50 years later.”

THE painting of an outdoor mural which has been coming to life along the wall of FoodWorks supermarket in Urunga in recent months is now nearing completion. Artists David Bromley and David Southgate are at work making the most of the sunny days after rain played havoc with their painting plans. “The wall on the side of the FoodWorks supermarket, facing the primary school in Urunga, is not an easy site on which to do a mural,” David Bromley told News Of The Area.Nevertheless the painting pair decided to look upon it in a different light and work around the obstacles in witty ways. “The wall has fixtures including air conditioners and existing windows, it accommodates numerous wheelie bins and is a busy delivery bay for the supermarket, all of which conflicted with any ideas of painting vistas or making the wall one large canvas for a picture to exist upon,” he said. Instead, the wall has become a different version of itself, now looking like a dilapidated Edwardian structure, with cracked render, basement windows giving the illusion of another level to the building, and vegetation beginning to take a hold on the crumbling exterior. Using the trompe l’oeil technique has allowed the two Davids to use their artistic skills to create this illusion and to add life to a neglected part of Urunga’s street scape. David Southgate told NOTA that, as the industrial wheelie bins couldn’t be moved, “We decided to paint an ibis strategically placed to look as though it is on a bin quite at home as a ‘Bin Chicken’ with other creatures living on and amongst the vegetation growing on the wall. “Our intention is to catch the viewers’ attention with subtle, life-like effects and subjects that become apparent the more you look. “Hopefully it brings a smile to the viewer,” he said. The FoodWorks mural work has been gradual due to bad weather and other commitments, but completion is in sight. A display of six framed works depicting stylish posters of a bygone era, celebrating Urunga and its beautiful surroundings will appear in their weatherproof frames on the wall. “Three of the posters are completed, the latest is an aerial view of Urunga and the estuary with a beautiful old Bi-wing, passenger plane showing off a fictitious Urunga AirlinesDuringlogo.”a recent spate of rain, grounded from their q A painting by David Georges (a collaboration by the two Davids) includes some of their mural features, now showing in Coffs Coast Art Prize 2022

DEAR Jasminda, MY partner has great taste in decor. In fact, he considers himself a bit of an interior designer. And I agree with him. To a point. In the master bedroom (the one we sleep in) he has a very large painting of what can only be described as two animals making love. When I say animals, I mean a sheep and a llama. I find this extremely off-putting to the point where I only try to initiate romance in the loungeroom (where the artwork is a series of sea-themed paintings).

Kimmy L. Dear Kimmy, The fact that the first thing I did was to look up whether that hybrid was possible, maybe says more about me than your partner. I was unsuccessful; however, you can cross a llama with a camel (known as a cama). A rather moody animal apparently, which is littlePersonally, wonder. I like abstract artwork in bedrooms (though not as abstract as the image I conjure with the sheep/llama combo and their baby shama offspring). There are definitely some no-go zones in what adorns a bedroom wall. Family portraits can be very unpalatable - particularly when they include Uncle Roger. Religious artefacts, you know the Virgin Mary, Jesus on a Cross, Moses parting the seas, are better placed in another location, although I think a Buddha statue could be quite calming. I'm sure your partner could integrate this with some wind chimes, prayer flags, a mandala bedspread and some incense (all these can be purchased off Etsy, which seems a bit kitsch, but there you go). You know, the best bet for bedrooms is subdued lighting (candles are lovely), natural hues, and lots of plants. Artwork is very subjective and, as you've found, not always conducive to creating the rightPS:mood.Your partner soundsCarpeodd.diem, Jasminda.

• Cancer and Leukaemia • Blood disorders • Pregnancy complications • Brain and nerve diseases, and • Immune deficiencies, allowing recipients to lead a normal life. Demand is currently outstripping our supply, therefore we are always looking to increase the supply of plasma from Australian donors, to ensure patients across the country continue to receive the treatments they need. Plasma can be donated as often as every fortnight, providing more opportunities to help those who require it. Many donors have a regular monthly routine, but it is up to you how often you donate.
Penny and her father fall on tough times, they stay with Penny’s grandmother, Jane for twelve months. Penny is only ten years old at the time. After Penny and her father move-out, they maintain a close relationship with Jane.Unfortunately, Penny’s father unexpectedly passes-away, when Penny is in herJane30s.says to Penny, “Don’t worry, I will look after you in my will.” A few years pass and when Penny is looking to buy her first home, Jane says, “I will give you $100,000 now or you can have it as part of your inheritance.” No money changes hands. Penny continues to have a close relationship with Jane until her grandmother passes-away 20 years later. Penny discovers that she receives 20 percent of Jane’s estate under her will, with the rest of the estate going to Jane’s daughter.Penny makes several claims against Jane’s estate. She says that the unfulfilled promises that Jane made to her, amount to a breach of contract or give rise to an “equitable estoppel”.Penny says that in any event, the provision she receives under the will is not “proper and adequate” and that she should receive 50 percent of the estate. In relation to the contract claim, the Court finds that the “terms” of the alleged contract are too vague and too uncertain to be enforceable and there was no “exchange” of promises which would give rise to the necessary “consideration”. Similarly, the Court finds that the alleged promises were not sufficiently “clear and unequivocal” and also dismisses Penny’s estoppel claim, citing that Penny did not demonstrate that she suffered a “detrimental reliance” that was unconscionable in the circumstances. However, the Court finds that Penny’s cohabitation with Jane, during her childhood, constituted a partial dependency and because she had a close relationship with her grandmother, found that there were “factors warranting” the making of an order in Penny’s favour. Nonetheless, the Court ultimately finds that Penny’s inheritance of 20 percent of the estate constituted “adequate provision for her proper maintenance” and dismisses Penny’s final claim.

DEAR News Of The Area, THE NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet wants to have it both ways. He describes the recent flood events as, ’disastrous’ and ‘ catastrophic’ but at the same time he and his government apparently still intend to log the upper catchment and headwaters of the Kalang River. This tragic,ill-advised activity would greatly increase the frequency, maximum heights and overall severity of flooding and flash flooding in the valley. When these man-made, governmentsponsored disasters damage or destroy homes, farmland, livestock, and businesses at Kalang, Brierfield, Newry Island and Urunga, will the Premier and his government adequately compensate the victims? No, they will not. I beseech him to do the right thing, match his words with actions and pull the plug on this ridiculous, costly and highly destructive project.

SEVEN, 7pm It’s funny how tastes can change. A little more than two years ago, this show disappeared after a lacklustre season that failed to whet viewers’ appetites. Now, with a new set of judges and guests including Brit cooking queen Nigella Lawson, former MasterChef Matt Preston (right) and the charismatic Curtis Stone, this season is turning out to be people’s cup of tea. With an entertaining crew of contestants, including young Sydney couple Janelle and Monzir and outspoken radiation therapists Kate and Mary, it’s easy to see why. Tonight, the first lastchance challenge has four teams from group one cooking a main and dessert to score a spot in the semifinal.
TEN, 7.30pm It was only a matter of time before the savvy crew on The Living Room turned their focus to the ubiquitous work-from-home space. If yours is an unattractive, cluttered afterthought, Barry Du Bois and Amanda Keller’s revamp of a young couple’s small space will inspire with its sparkle and functionality. On the other side of the ditch, Dr Chris Brown (above) and Miguel Maestre have a nature-filled, tummy rumbling segment in the Hawke’s Bay mountains of New Zealand’s North Island. It‘s a tough gig as the pair sample local wine and whip up a pancetta-wrapped lamb dish. (PG) 11.30 Morning News. 12.00 MOVIE: Love Upstream. (2021, PGa) 1.45 Garden Gurus Moments. q The four leading A graders on the first tee - Allan Clarke (winner), Brad Fortescue, Mike Simpson and Steve Ellis.
By Max TURNER IN great conditions for golf, Trevor and Paul Latham sponsored the final round of the Macksville Country Club Golf BeyondChampionships.beingahabit, Allan Clarke won his 36th championship final. Apart from being a convincing winner, Allan finished his demoralisation with a ten metre putt on the last hole - playing off a plus one handicap is a commendable achievement.MikeSimpson won the Net Event. In the B grade, Jeff Gore maintained his consistency to come in the winner ahead of Jordan Welsh who tied with Darrin Turner as runners up. Not satisfied with winning the Junior Championship, Jordan came out determined to beat grandfather John Fortescue, which he did. It seems their handicaps are going in opposite directions. Paul Donges started with a flyer in the first round and maintained a good lead for the four rounds to finish a convincing winner in C grade. Neil Cunneen was runner up. The day's stroke event was won by Tony Grebert with Cohen Welsh runnerTheup.ladies were out on Tuesday. Jo Montague, the winner, is so consistent it seems her drives are finishing in last week's divots. Helen Ferrero was runner up on a countback from Desma Hughes and Rhonda McAuliffe.
