Banner Theatre for a burlesque competition with a difference known as DIY BurlesKoala.

Traditionally, burlesque is a glittering striptease entertainment style where dancers begin in opulent and expensive costumes swishing across the stages and dazzling their audience.

In DIY BurlesKoala, performers are challenged to create an entire performance on a budget of only $100.

The challenge is not to create a ‘cheap’ costume, but rather to create an act that audiences cannot believe the cost was no more than $100.

This requires some innovative recycling, thrifting, borrowing, and reusing to create their masterpieces both on time and on budget.

This year Missabotti’s Roxana Lennox, who goes by the stage name of Sheila Bea Rite, will be heading to Brisbane to take on the nation’s best ‘budget burlesque’ performers.

Sheila Bea Rite told News Of

The Area, “I was first attracted to the glamour of burlesque, but what has truly kept me coming back is the inclusive community.

“I struggle with both mental health and inflammatory arthritis so finding a fun and challenging physical activity that encourages participation from people with all levels of ability has been a huge boost to my overall health and well being.”

Sheila Bea Rite attends

regular workshops and performances with the Northern Rivers Burlesque collective.

“I make my own costumes as much as possible and when I can’t quite make my vision come to life my very talented mum makes magic with her sewing machine, as well as relying on the wealth of costuming experience held by the ladies of Northern Rivers Burlesque.”

Now in its third year after a Covid interrupted 2021, DIY BurlesKoala is the Australian

version of a New Zealand created burlesque challenge, DIY BurlesKiwi, now in its eighth year.

Although this will be the first time Sheila Bea Rite has competed in front of a live audience, in 2020 she competed online in the AAPC Burlesque Beauty competition and was awarded First Runner Up.

“I’m not a very competitive person and I am just really excited to share the DIY BurlesqueKoala stage with some great Aussie performers and see what creative acts they will share,” Sheila said.

No mobile black spot funding for Cowper

FEDERAL Member for Cowper Pat Conaghan has called on the Labor Government to explain why all 27 New South Wales locations invited to apply under the next round of mobile blackspot program funding fall within Labor seats.

The latest round of funding, named the ‘Improving Mobile Coverage Round’ was announced earlier this month, and promises to ‘implement the Government's commitments to improve mobile coverage and quality of service at 54 target locations across rural, regional and remote Australia’.

All 27 locations fall within Labor electorates, leaving residents of Cowper to go without.

“When you look at a map of New South Wales, particularly of the regional and rural areas within the state, it’s genuinely distressing to note that 100 percent of the recent funding round in our state is going to less than ten percent of the landmass that needs it,” Mr

Conaghan said.

“Let’s be honest here, rather than saying ‘commitments to improve mobile coverage’ it should really say ‘election commitments to Labor seats only’, because it is hard to argue anything to the contrary.”

Mr Congahan expressed frustration that areas like Kundabung, Raleigh, Repton and parts of Nambucca would not see “the infrastructure they deserve come to pass in this latest round”.

“Funding continues to be ripped away from the regions in favour of supporting Labor seats, particularly in NSW, despite the Coalition representing more than ninety percent of the state’s land mass,” Mr Conaghan said.

Federal Minister for Communications, the Hon Michelle Rowland MP told News Of The Area, “The October Budget delivered over $2.2 billion in funding over five years to expand mobile coverage and improve broadband through

our Better Connectivity Plan for Regional and Rural Australia.

“Our plan commits $400 million to expand mobile coverage and improve communications resilience, including investment to fund future rounds of the Mobile Black Spot Program, and $200 million to fund place-based communications solutions through additional rounds of the Regional Connectivity Program.

“The Department will shortly commence consultation on guidelines for the next rounds of these Programs, and look forward to applications for new mobile and other communications infrastructure under those rounds.”

Ms Rowland said this funding comes in addition to the Government’s commitment to expand full-fibre access and upgrade the NBN fixed-wireless network.

“In Cowper alone, this will deliver at least $40 million of investment to improve NBN quality

for over 39,000 local families and businesses, and support jobs.”

According to Ms Rowland, the Improving Mobile Coverage Round (IMCR) of the Mobile Black Spot Program fulfils commitments Labor made before the Federal Election to address long-standing mobile reception issues in known locations not addressed by previous Government initiatives or through industry investment.

“Local Members listening to the poor coverage experience of residents and small businesses in their communities contributed to this process.

“Improving mobile coverage is critical for vibrant and growing regional communities.

“Enhancing connectivity through the IMCR and our Better Connectivity Plan will support economic and social activity, as well as public safety in underserved areas of rural and regional Australia.”

“We invite all members of the Stuarts Point community to attend an information session on the project.

“The first Community Information Session will be held: Wednesday 7 December 6.00- 8.00pm Stuarts Point Community Hall.

“This session will be held as a drop-in style session over two hours.

“Community members can attend at any time between 6 and 8pm.

“Allum will share with

you the ideas we have for the site and results so far of the studies and thoughts on how some of the key community issues can be addressed.”

Allum Property Group, the proposer of the 600-dwelling development, was established in 1991 by Barney Allum, is fully Australian owned and boasts a heritage of three generations of family working in the business.

Allum has developed over 40 similar estates, providing homes for all lifestyles.

“The quality and comfort of each home we build and every estate we develop is at the heart of our engagement

with our buyers and our social contract with the wider communities,” the Allum Property website states.

The current general undertones of the community, as expressed to NOTA, are concerns regarding the long-stalled infrastructure problems, predominantly drainage and sewerage delays, adverse effects on surrounding ecological and culturally historical environments, and the likelihood of social stratification, though views on possible positive aspects include opportunities for increased employment, diversity of housing,

Second Report Finds Biodiversity Offset Failures

A NEW South Wales Upper House committee that examined the integrity of the Biodiversity Offsets Scheme has handed down its report after an eighteenmonth inquiry.

The Upper House committee, which included members of the government, opposition and crossbench, received over 100 submissions and held four hearings into the scheme.

Committee Chair Ms Sue Higginson said, “An

offsets scheme is supposed to protect biodiversity, by ensuring developers offset unavoidable biodiversity losses due to development with equivalent biodiversity gains elsewhere, meaning there is 'no net loss'.”

The inquiry heard that the scheme's design allows too much flexibility to trade off threatened species in exchange for cash, without guarantee that genuinely equivalent offsets will ever be found.

"We have heard that this scheme's operation is so opaque and complex that

no stakeholder group has full confidence in it,” Ms Higginson said.

She said, with little transparency about the biodiversity offset market, what offsets have been used for what developments, or the ecological outcomes of the scheme, it is not surprising that allegations of insider trading and collusion have surrounded it from the outset.

The report is consistent with the Auditor General’s report into the scheme that was tabled at the end of August which found that

are not being applied in the ways they should be.

She said the ‘like for like’ rules are not working, and, even though developers have paid more than $90 million into the Biodiversity Conservation Fund, there is no guarantee that it will ever be able to genuinely compensate for the biodiversity actually lost.

“It’s a complex system and it is very difficult to cost biodiversity loss,” she said.

for big developers.”

Ms Higginson said ‘avoid, minimise, offset’ should be the protocol but the system in NSW usually goes straight to offset.

“Do we want to keep losing biodiversity or do we want to make this scheme work the way it is meant to?” she said.

AS a way of saying thanks for the ongoing support provided to the Bowraville Theatre, there will be a Bowraville Theatre Christmas Party held on Wednesday 14 December at 6:00 pm for members of the Bowraville Arts Council (BAC) and friends.

During this free event, where entertainment is included, there will be drinks and nibbles provided compliments of the BAC.

Well and truly out of the quiet times endured by the theatre during the COVID pandemic, the iconic Bowraville Theatre has recently been the venue for a succession of incredible performances drawing large and delighted audiences.

This year alone the stage has seen the phenomenal Tasman Keith, folk rock icon Kim Churchill, the incomparable Hello Tut Tut and the flamenco maestro

himself, Paco Lara.

What so many visitors do not realise is that Bowraville Theatre is entirely volunteer managed and operated.

Secretary of the BAC, Dale Hawkins, told News Of The Area, “All of our volunteers are people who came to see a performance or a movie and fell in love with the place.

“There are a range of volunteer options at the theatre from front of house and box office roles to the technical side of putting on a performance and even volunteering at our cafe.

“If you think volunteering a the theatre might be for you then come along to the Bowraville Theatre Christmas Party to see it for yourself and talk to those who are already a part of the theatre.”

If you would like to come along you must RSVP for catering purposes by emailing bowravilletheatre@ bigpond.com.

NSW Greens MP and spokesperson for the environment Sue Higginson has drawn attention to NSW Forestry Corporation’s Annual Report, tabled in the NSW Parliament last week, which shows a $9 million dollar loss for the hardwood division.

Ms Higginson said the hardwood division conducts logging operations in public native forests and is directly driving the climate and

extinction crises.

“The people of NSW have lost another $9 million dollars to the unprofitable and irresponsible destruction of our public native forests.

“These native forests are home to endangered koalas and greater gliders and must be preserved if we hope to save these species from extinction,” she said.

Ms Higginson highlighted that the softwood division earned $47 million from plantations that can be managed sustainably and go to building homes and other

high value uses.

Native Forest Logging Costs Taxpayers $9 Million

“The Frontier Economics report ‘Comparing the value of alternative uses of native forests in Southern NSW’ shows that ending logging in public native forests could save NSW $62 million over the next 30 years,” she said.

“Frontier Economics has also shown us that the transition to 100 percent plantations could cost as little as $30 million per year over ten years.

“The time is now to plan the transition from public native forest logging while it is costing NSW millions

of dollars every year,” Ms Higginson said.

“Communities and workers need a managed transition out of native forest logging and into 100 percent sustainable plantations so they can have long term security.”

A Forestry Corporation spokesperson said their organisation had been appointed to manage tourism and recreation, roads, pests and weeds, conservation and fire across approximately two million hectares of public land on behalf of the NSW Government.

Grassy Head Plant Nursery

THE Coastal Plant Propagation Centre at Grassy Head Plant Nursery supports local dune care groups, and as a result of the recent fire and flooding events, also provides plants for land care revegetation.

Established in 1975, the Nursery currently operates as a self-sufficient Crown

Land Trust with facilities catering for workshops and a soil conservation educational unit, all powered by solar panels.

Twice a week, on Tuesday and Friday mornings, volunteers descend on the crown land location, which is accessed via a drive through the Grassy Head Caravan Park and get to work on various projects.

NOTA met with the secretary/treasurer, Moira Ryan and onsite groundsman, Vince Overton at the spacious workshop meeting room where Moira explained the importance of native plant propagation.

“As a Reserve Trust we identify threatened species and collect plants and seeds for propagation which in time are provided to conservation

groups, and we also have a wide variety of tube stock available for sale to the public,” Moira said.

Vince was keen to mention the proximity to the ocean.

“It’s good to be so close to the ocean, you just take a short stroll over the dune and it’s right there ready for a swim.”

Moira pointed out the need for more general maintenance of the nursery grounds and she said that their small, yet dedicated team could use more helpers.

“We would love to welcome more volunteers to the nursery.”

For volunteering or facility bookings information, contact Moira on 0421 911 294.

She said the cost is largely offset by revenue from timber production, which only takes place in around one percent of the forest, yet the management cost is incurred for 100 percent of the land.

She pointed out a range of factors that adversely affected the financial year.

The spokesperson said Forestry Corporation continues to balance the economic return from native forest harvesting with conservation of flora and fauna, access to forests for tourism and primary industries and jobs in

regional communities.

Ms Higginson said, “Forestry Corporation can justify it however they like, but where else is a public asset able to be sold off and still cost the public $9 million?

“We can surmise that the companies that carry out the logging are not carrying a loss.

“It is not just a loss on paper, but it is a significant cost to the people of NSW.

and watch him interact with the team is terrific.”

WITH a passion for all things motorised, 21-yearold Jamie, who has autism, has found his perfect employment fit at Battery World Coffs Harbour with support from CHESS Connect.

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, working-age people with a disability are twice as likely to be unemployed as those without a disability.

Franchise Partner Paul Simpson said it was a nobrainer to welcome Urunga lad Jamie to the Battery World team.

“Jamie is a wonderful addition to our store and the whole team looks forward to the two days when he’s working,” said Paul.

“We absolutely love having him on our team.

“Jamie has so many skills to provide to the team and it’s been rewarding seeing the boost in his confidence.

“He’s a real larrikin, so to see his personality come out

Jamie is an avid train enthusiast and metal detectorist, so working behind the scenes with batteries in the Coffs Harbour store aligns perfectly with his passions.

His job involves interacting with customers, taking customer service invoices, answering the phones, and mostly working behind the scenes helping the team sort through recycled

batteries, distributing stock, and keeping the store in tiptop shape.

Working two days a week, Jamie is an expert in small and AAA batteries, but has been learning more about all different kinds of batteries from homeware to truck batteries.

Keen to join the workforce, Jamie began looking for work experience opportunities in early 2020 before the global pandemic after he graduated Year

12, with the goal to gain independence, engage in social activities and contribute to the local community.

Jamie wasn’t worried about whether businesses would turn him away because of his disability.

“I just went for it,” Jamie said.

“I wanted to see what would happen and just give it a go,” said Jamie.

“Even with the pandemic, I kept persisting and learning

from each interview.”

Jamie’s determination brought him success.

Alongside his job at Battery World, Jamie also works at Bellingen Golf Club and keeps busy volunteering at the Frank Partridge Museum.

Jamie said understanding the detail and specifics of how batteries work helps him in his role.

Motivated by his passion for learning about the past, Jamie has been fascinated by

the history and development of batteries as well.

The support provided by his employer, Battery World Franchise Partner Paul Simpson, has been very encouraging.

“Paul is absolutely a great boss, and I really enjoy coming to work at Battery World,” said Jamie.

“Paul and the entire team support me in my role, and it’s a privilege to work with them.”

Students get creative at Nambucca Heads

THE recent Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) PopUp day held at Nambucca Heads High School was an amazing success.

Put together by the whole CAPA department, the day was funded by a grant from the Department of Education to reinvigorate the arts after Covid-19 interruptions.

Year 11 Visual Arts

students selected an artist then created a ceramic piece depicting their particular artist's techniques.

Then for the pop-up day they appropriated a piece of the artist's work.

Year 9 students studied Ancient Greek Ceramic forms and created their own pieces using both construction and decorative techniques.

They appropriated the Ancient Greek temple, The Erechtheion, using their ceramic pots as props.

They also recreated the 'Oath of the Horatii', which is a large painting by French artist Jacques-Louis David painted in 1784 and now on display in the Louvre in Paris.

To finish their display, Year 9 delved into some pop

art and revived old vinyl records to create a sculpture that will become a permanent fixture in the art garden.

“There was also face painting and some famous artworks depicted on large boards with cut outs so you were able to put yourself in a painting,” said Annette Welsh, Administration Support Staff, Nambucca Heads High School.

Nambucca Valley Writers Launch New Book

THE Nambucca Valley Writers Group (NVWG) are celebrating 33 years of writing excellence this year with the launch of their

“There was also a display of Indigenous art, self portraits and still life paintings.

“The band were again in fine form and the karaoke was a lot of fun.

“Congratulations to the brave people who took part.

“All in all this was a great day and it was wonderful

to once again be able to welcome family, friends and community members to our school to appreciate the very talented students at NHHS.

“A big thank you to the Year 12 students, who even though they have finished at NHHS, came in to lend a hand,” Annette said.

new anthology.

NVWG has 33 years of continuous membership and to celebrate this momentous occasion they will be launching their most recent anthology called ‘33 in 22’.

“I take great satisfaction in celebrating 33 years of our writers’ group, a group I’ve been a part of since before the turn of the century.

“It’s a pleasure to bring

together this collection of short stories and poetry from old and new members for this publication,” said President Roby Aiken.

The Nambucca Valley Writers Group draws its members from as far as Coffs Harbour and Kempsey, with Associate Members as far flung as Victoria.

Meetings take place on the fourth Saturday of each month at 11 Kent Street, Nambucca Heads.

www.newsofthearea.com.au

The group's members are a lively bunch dabbling in all sorts of literary forms including poetry, short story, biography, history novels, plays and film.

“Our intention is to support people’s writing ambitions by providing guidance through regular meetings, workshops, feedback, resources and the assistance of its members,” said Roby.

The launch of ‘33 in

22’ will be held on 10 December in the Seniors Community Hall, 11 Kent Street, Nambucca Heads for a 10:30 start.

Morning tea will be supplied, copies of the book will be on sale for $15.00 each.

Nambucca students send off school in style

NAMBUCCA Heads High School (NHHS) held their Year 12 Formal on Thursday 18 November at River View Island.

“Our young adults certainly looked amazing in their outfits.

“We were very blessed with a stunning evening allowing some beautiful photos in a spectacular setting,” said Annette Welsh, Administration Support Staff, Nambucca Heads High School.

Parents, families and friends enjoyed a wonderful evening celebrating the students' thirteen years of schooling.

Year Advisor Mrs Danielle Bowen who had supported

the students for six years, made a beautiful speech thanking the students for being a great group of kids during their time at NHHS.

“We wish them all well for their future, whatever that may look like,” said Annette.

“A number of students have had an early offer to several different universities.

“One boy has a contract with Sydney Olympic Football Club playing in the u/20’s NSW NPL Men’s Competition and another is travelling to Toowoomba to attend university and play rugby league in the Hasting Deering Colts U/21 squad.

Nambucca Heads Island Golf Club

MOTHER nature always has the last laugh!

While we have enjoyed wonderful weather for golf, access via the Causeway has been a wet problem in the mornings for both golfers and Club patrons due to some king tides, boosted by large ocean swells.

This week’s featured sponsor was Paul Habgood’s Island Pro Shop - thank you for your support, Paul!

On Tuesday, we played the monthly ‘Island Challenge’ sponsored by Michael Briscoe’s Toyota Service Advantage – a Medley Stroke event, where any golfer that plays to their handicap can win a sleeve of premium golf balls.

Overall winner was Stephen Kimber (19) with a net 64 (wow!), a clear winner from runner up Linne Street (16) with net 69.

Brian Carmichael (1) from Newcastle won the Gross with 76.

The next best Lady score was Jennifer Johnston (24) with 71 net. Others taking home a sleeve of golf balls were David Covel (Frederickton), Hans Jansen and Kevin Mulhall.

NTP’s to Kevin Mulhall on 5, Stephen Kimber on 8, Sue Seymour on 13, Chris Cordner (Club Taree) on 15 and Kel McGoldrick who scored

an ‘ACE’ on the 18th – I understand that this is Kel’s 4th HIO!

Congratulations Kel, make room on the mantelpiece, your Trophy is on its way!

The Ladies played a Single Stableford on Wednesday for their Annual Breast Cancer Trials Charity Pink Golf Day – a great field of 47 fun loving ladies out to support a great cause, raising $1,148 from a variety of activities, novelty events, cake stall, guessing competition and raffles – well done ladies!

In Division 1 (0 to 23), Susan McWilliam (14) just edged out Sue Brooks (13) with 38 points on countback.

Division 2 (24 to 30) was won by Kerrie Jackson (26) with 36 points from Jennifer Johnston (24) with 35 points.

Faye Hopkins (33) won Division 3 (31-45) with 41 points from Jennifer Ainsworth (32) with 35 points.

The Ball Rundown to 32 points on countback.

NTP’s to Kerrie Eichorn, Sue Seymour and Linda Piccin on 5, Glenys Thompson, Lisa Urquhart and Robyn Jones on 8, Cheryl Gilmour got the ‘Pizza This’ voucher on 13, Susan McWilliam got the Pro Pin on 18, and accuracy drives were won by Kay McGoldrick and Dianne Hopkins.

On Thursday, The Nambucca RSL sponsored ‘Dolphin Day’ Open Medley Stableford welcomed 88 players despite the flooded causeway for two hours.

Overall winner with a hot score of 44 points was Roy Louis (29) off to the Pro Shop to select his Golf Shirt as part of his trophy package.

In Division 1 (0 to 16), Kai Burkenshaw (6) and Colin Habgood (9) both scored 37 points, with Kai winning on countback.

Chris Thorndike (21) and Robert Coneybeare (18) both scored 37 points in Division 2 (17 to 22), Chris winning on countback.

Sheryn Fuller (33) won Division

3 (23 to 45) with 43 points from Hans Jansen (24 with 41 points.

The Ball Rundown to 34 points on countback.

NTP’s to Steve Frost for the longest putt on 2, Thomas Wattison on 5, Geoff Rackham (Urunga) on 7, John Hopkins on 8, Warren Fuller on 13, Anthony Smith on 15 and Geoff Brooks got the Pro Pin Jackpot on 18.

Saturday’s event was a Medley Stableford with most players opting for an early start so they didn’t have to navigate a flooded causewayagain! Daryl Wall (11) scored 38 points to win Division 1 (0 to 15) from Drew Glasson (9) with 37 points.

David Rosser (17) scored 38 points to win Division 2 (16 to 20) from Peter Shepherd (20) with 34 points.

Great to see Noel Gaddes (36) back on the course – he and Joanne Shepherd from Tamworth (24) both had great rounds of 42 points, Joanne winning Division 3 (21 to 45) on countback.

Bowraville Bowls Results

SOCIAL bowls last week saw two games of triples and one pairs fixture on a super slippery 'big' green.

Tracey Armes, Trish Walker and Paul O'Neill jagged the winning card with Trevor Ryan snagging most touchers. There's still several spots available in the Open Pairs tournament to be held this Sunday so get your names in for a chance at some great coin, including $500 to the winners.

the top seven going into a three end shootout final series and eighth spot going to auction.

$50 to enter a team which includes morning tea and lunch.

The draw for consistency singles has been completed so check the board and organise your opponent and marker ASAP.

A good turnout for the club AGM last Sunday to support those who will take on the formal duties for the next year, big thank you to all who have volunteered their time over the past twelve months.

Some great news was shared regarding the new club facility so the coming year looks to be very exciting indeed.

Nambucca U3A Fishing For Fun

THE year has come to an early close for the Nambucca U3A Fishing for Fun group, culminating with a Christmas luncheon last week.

But firstly it’s time to fish before any end of year celebrations.

Lions Valla Reserve was the venue.

This spot is regularly chosen because you can fish either the beach or Deep Creek plus there are great facilities such as barbecues and a large communal shelter.

High tide was at 10.00am and the water was crystal clear.

The current was strong in the estuary and on the beach.

In fact the tide didn’t turn until 11.00am.

The beach drift quickly returned the bait to the beach no matter how much weight was on the sinker so most fishing was done from the pedestrian bridge.

Gary entertained the tourists by

fly fishing into a school of mullet.

He did catch two and even though they were small they provided plenty of sport with his light gear.

Predictably it was bream that was the most caught species.

John landed a nice size bream on his first cast.

He nearly lost it over the side of the bridge in his enthusiasm to have his picture taken with his catch.

More bream were caught by Pam and Tony.

The winners for the day were Best Bream - John, Most Fish Any Species - Gary, Encouragement Award - Tony.

The morning concluded with a barbeque as our Christmas party.

These outings are organised by Greg Artlett for U3A.

Greg is a volunteer Fishing Instructor for the Department of Primary Industries.

If you want to join the group then ring Greg on 0427689400.

HOT news!

The crowds are back at the Bowlo both inside and out.

First let’s talk about outside.

Thursday Twilight Bowls is pulling them in - 34 people playing last week plus spectators and the number is growing each week.

A game of bowls, a bit of music (there have been some videos seen of people bopping around) a BBQ and time after the game to sit around and chew the fat about how well you went, or how bad.

Names need to be in by 5.30pm with a start at 6.00pm finishing

when you like.

Thanks to Doug and Janice for all the effort they put in.

Friday’s men’s Triples is also going well with good numbers turning up. Names in by 11.30am, starting at 1.00pm.

Sunday morning bowls also continues to grow thanks to Peter Fredricks. There were 36 players last Sunday with room for more.

Names in by 9.00am for a 9.30am start.

The wrong bias tin also had to be emptied and that money will go to the Cancer Council in Nambucca so all your $1’s go to a worthy cause.

of the Major Minor Pairs and two tight games kept the crowd inside and outside enthralled as both went down to the last bowl.

Danny ‘The Machine’ Curran and Angry beat the father and son combo of Doug and Oxy Cedelland 18-17.

It was a tight game all the way with Doug needing a three on the last end but only getting two.

In the other game, Mino and Urky defeated Mark ‘Canadian Club’ Blackford and Graham ‘The Good Brother’ Hunt 21 -17.

The Good Brother needed a three to win and went close but dropped a two. Man of the Round

Angry had to work Sunday so the final will be played on 2 December in the arvo.

Claim on inheritance under Family Law Act

AMANDA and Robert meet each other in their early 50s and begin dating.

After a few months, they consider themselves to be boyfriend and girlfriend.

After Robert’s mother passes-away, he decides to move-in with this father, so that he can look after him.

Shortly after moving-in, Robert invites Amanda to come and live with him and his father.

Amanda and Robert give the house a thorough clean-up before she moves in.

They don’t pay rent.

Unfortunately, after living together for six years, their relationship breaks down and they separate.

Later that year, Robert’s father passes-away and leaves the whole of his estate to Robert, including the house, now worth over $1 million.

Amanda files an Initiating Application in the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia, seeking orders that she receive $300,000 by way of a property settlement.

The parties cannot agree on a reasonable compromise and the matter proceeds to a hearing.

The Court hears that at the commencement of their relationship, both parties were in modest financial circumstances and when they separated, they each had assets totalling just $50,000.

Amanda claims that she spent some 300 hours cleaning up and renovating Robert’s father’s home.

She says that she attended to the cooking and cleaning and his transportation needs.

Amanda claims that due to her contributions towards the relationship and in consideration of “future factors”, which include her limited income earning potential given her age and her suffering from back problems, it is “just and equitable” that she receives a benefit of an order in her favour, although she reduces her claim to $100,000.

The Court notes that the parties kept their financial affairs separate during their relationship and expresses concerns regarding the credibility of Amanda’s evidence.

Ultimately, the Court does not accept that Robert’s father’s house should automatically form part of the assets of the relationship and on the basis that Amanda had no contribution-based entitlement in the home, dismisses her claim.

DEAR Jasminda,

I have a magnificent kangaroo paw plant at the front of my property.

Recently, I noticed that someone has been helping themselves.

I'm quite miffed. How do you suggest I deal with this?

Dear Vicki,

I'm trying to envisage someone furtively pinching kangaroo paws and I'd imagine that would be quite a difficult thing to pull off.

I'm also of the belief that this is a premeditated crime.

It would be possible to pinch something innocuous, like a daisy, without too much difficulty, but a kangaroo paw would require secateurs at the very least.

It would also be very difficult to discreetly leave the crime scene with a bunch of these highly distinctive plants.

Your thief is brazen (or perhaps working with an accomplice and a getaway vehicle).

So, you have a couple of options.

You could be passive and bask in the glory of knowing that your gardening skills are of such a high standard that people are willing to resort to theft.

You could be aggressive, hiding out behind your shrubbery and then pouncing on the thief, perhaps giving them a good walloping with a clump of the strap-like foliage and yelling, 'Get your dirty picking mitts off my magnificent flowers.'

Or you could be imaginative and, once again hiding, cry out a furtive 'ouch' each time the pilferer snips off one of the flowering stems.

I'd hesitate to go to your local law enforcement officers over this.

They are probably dealing with equally important issues like cyber crime, human trafficking and drug cartels.

FRIDAY

THE FLATSHARE

TEN, 8.30pm

London writer Beth O’Leary’s bestselling rom-com novel gets a new life as an exciting six-part series. Starring Jessica Brown Findlay and Anthony Welsh (Dirtymoney) in the leads, it’s a quirky, fun and stylish look at two London millennials in an unusual situation. Book editor Tiff and nurse Leon have never met, but they both sign up to share a single-bed flat, with each having alternate hours to use the space. What begins as a means to an end to save money blossoms into an unconventional love story.

MONDAY TASKMASTER

SBS VICELAND, 8.30pm

Before an Aussie version of this competition-based comedy series hits screens next year, with Tom Gleeson as its arbiter of good tasks, it’s advisable to get a handle on the slightly unconventional format – season 11 of the original British version, premiering tonight, should do nicely. With Taskmaster Greg Davies (right) and his assistant Alex Horne in charge, five new celebrity contestants – Aussie Sarah Kendall (Frayed), actress Charlotte Ritchie (Call the Midwife, Ghosts) and comedians Jamali Maddix, Mike Wozniak and Lee Mack – compete in a series of bizarre challenges, including delivering crockery while riding a scooter and catching rats.

TUESDAY STUFF THE BRITISH STOLE

ABC, 8pm Host Marc Fennell (right) looks closer to home for the final episode of this globe-trotting six-part series that unravels the mysteries behind artefacts plundered by the British Empire. In 1833, Indigenous Noongar warrior Yagan was a resistance fighter who tirelessly fought against British colonisers in Western Australia. The settlers branded him an outlaw and he was brutally killed. A key part of Yagan’s body was sent to be displayed in a Liverpool museum, only to be lost in the UK for decades. But Yagan’s determined mob never gave up in their quest to bring him back to country. Fennell says the “fight to bring him home is one of history’s wildest detective stories”.
