Locals in Bowraville were treated to a spectacle on the evening of Tuesday 27 September when hundreds of the Hot Rods rolled into town, filling High Street with Hot Rods from all over Australia.

Many businesses in Bowraville stayed open to support the influx of

Improving mental health in Nambucca Heads

COFFS Harbour Employment Support Services has been awarded a grant of $6,331 for its work to improve mental health and wellbeing in Nambucca Heads as part of Australia Post’s 2022 Community Grants Program.

The grant will fund their project The Community Mental Fitness and Wellbeing Project, a series of nonclinical, strength-based educational workshops for the Nambucca Valley community.

The workshops aim to strengthen participants’ mental fitness and wellbeing by providing practical knowledge and strategies and reducing stigma around mental health conversations.

Mrs Heather Hammond, Marketing Manager, Coffs Harbour Employment Support Services said, “The CHESS Connect Community

“We strive to provide education to decrease mental health stigma and practical strategies to enhance self-care, improve mindset and support help-seeking behaviours for residents in the close-knit Nambucca Valley community.”

Coffs Harbour Employment Support Services is one of 70 community organisations across the country to receive a 2022 Australia Post Community Grant of up to $10,000.

For the third consecutive year, the grants program reinforces Australia Post’s commitment to mental health by funding projects that help improve connection and mental wellbeing in local communities.

Australia Post Executive General Manager Community, Sustainability and Stakeholder Engagement, Tanny Mangos said the organisation was delighted to support projects making a real difference to health and wellbeing, with recipients based in every state and territory and half of the projects in rural and remote communities.

Nambucca Lions mark 75th Anniversary of Lions Clubs with a rejuvenation of Lions Park watching platform.

Lions Park on Newry Street, Nambucca Heads has long been a place where locals have been able to picnic while admiring beautiful ocean views and even do some whale watching.

Thanks to the Nambucca Lions, Nambucca Valley Council, a significant club grant of over $30,000 from the Nambucca Heads RSL Club and $11,000 from the Australian Lions Foundation, the park now boasts a stunning ‘75 Year’ flower garden, a renovated rotunda and a purpose built whale

President of the Nambucca Lions, Mr Grahame Beatton, told News Of The Area, “The public seem to love the space and are even having weddings here.”

The idea of rejuvenating this much loved space came from Friend of Lions, Don Parveez, and has resulted in the creation of a very special asset for locals and visitors alike.

On Saturday 25 September 2022 the Nambucca Lions officially opened the rejuvenated park at a ceremony attended by Nambucca Valley Mayor

Rhonda Hoban.

Grahame Beatton reminded those gathered about the history of Lions in Australia and detailed a number of significant works that Lions had done in making Nambucca Heads a better place to live.

Grahame also thanked the Nambucca Heads RSL Club, the Australian Lions Foundation, Anne Gillen, Andrew Holmes, Nambucca

Valley Council, Pelican Landing Garden Centre, James Bilson Builder, Kianana Bateman, Steve Bulmar, Wayne Burns, and Glenn McGrath who had all contributed greatly to the project.

In declaring the park officially opened, Mayor Rhonda Hoban said, “I thank the Lions for 75 years service to the country and 54 years service to Nambucca Heads.

Surf Life Saving patrols are back

THE iconic yellow and red flags have gone up along the Nambucca coastline, on Saturday, signalling Surf Life Saving Clubs are back patrolling for the summer season.

Surf Life Saving North Coast President Les Pepper said that with support from Newcastle Permanent lifesavers from the branch’s eight clubs, including Nambucca Heads Surf Life Saving Club, are ready to go.

“Thanks to Newcastle Permanent, we have the equipment, and our people are trained, to help keep people safe in and out of the water,” Les said.

“Newcastle Permanent also supports the recruitment, training and retention of junior surf lifesavers, to ensure we’ve got a pipeline of volunteers coming through.”

New Nambucca Heads Club president Aaron Honeysett said the club’s 30 volunteer life savers will patrol at Swimming Creek while Main Beach works continue.

He expects to have 80 local kids doing Nippers there this season too.

“We are hoping that by the end of the Christmas holidays the Council works will be complete, and we will be back in our

renovated surf club,” Aaron said.

Newcastle Permanent Branch and Lending Manager Joshua Freeman was with Les Pepper and Nambucca Heads Club representatives at a special North Coast Surf Life Saving Branch raising of the flags ceremony at Woolgoolga Beach.

At the presentation, Joshua said because Newcastle Permanent is customer-owned, it looks to support the communities where its members live, work and play.

“Spending time at the beach is part of summer for

so many people in our region, which is why we’ve been supporting local surf clubs for seventeen years,” he said.

“Local volunteer lifesavers save countless lives each year – they deserve our thanks and support.

“Last year North Coast branch lifesavers completed almost 20,000 patrol hours, saved 29 lives, gave 42 first-aid treatments and conducted almost 1,400 other preventative actions.”

Les Pepper shared tips to stay safe at the beach this summer.

- Always read and obey safety signs and lifesaver

instructions - Swim between the red and yellow flags

- Never enter the water if you have been drinking alcohol or are under the influence of drugs

- Wear sunscreen, seek shade and stay hydrated.

Boat skippers and rockfishers should always check the local forecast, seek advice from NSW Maritime and wear a lifejacket.

People interested in joining the surf life saving movement can find their local club at www. slsnorthcoast.com.au.

Hello Tut Tut at Bowraville Theatre

LAST Saturday night the town centre of Bowraville echoed with the sound of gypsy, balkan, klezmer and latin music fused together and exploding from the stage during a gig that had the crowd up and dancing from start to finish.

Hello Tut Tut, truly a band like no other, had the 208 seat Bowraville Theatre bursting at the seams with a crowd that embraced the unique and ‘feel good’ sound of the ensemble, with half their members from Melbourne and the other half from Bellingen.

The night opened with an uplifting set by the support act for the evening ‘Gunganbu’.

Gumbaynggirr language teacher Michael Jarrett and musician Luke Rhodes are Gunganbu, and they took the audience on a journey through local Indigenous culture

with songs and stories in Gumbaynggirr language set to music.

Gunganbu were at times joined on stage by guest musicians from Hello Tut Tut, adding to the richness of the performance.

The evening was presented by Archive Mid North Coast and is a concert program designed to provide opportunities for touring and local musicians and to bring accessible and inclusive music events to the community.

Archive Mid North Coast’s event organiser Sara-Jane Prince told News of the Area, “I am delighted by the number of people that have come along tonight to share this music and it has really set the scene for upcoming events being put on by Archive Mid North Coast here at the Bowraville Theatre.”

Forestry Firefighters train for the season

FIREFIGHTERS from Forestry Corporation of NSW on the Mid North Coast joined fellow brigade members from across the region for training in essential firefighting skills such as fire behaviour, tactics and strategy, leadership, command, control and communications, and how to operate the range of appliances and equipment used at fires.

Forestry Corporation is one of four statutory firefighting authorities, along with NPWS, RFS and Fire and Rescue.

Locally on the Mid North Coast they were heavily involved in the black summer bushfire season of 2019/20.

“Forestry Corporation of NSW firefighters staff were very active as part of the declared emergency response,” Rod Campbell, Forestry Corporation of NSW told News Of The Area.

The five-day intensive training program is designed to get new recruits nationally qualified as forest firefighters. Other more experienced

firefighting staff upgraded their qualifications in Advanced Firefighter and Crew Leader roles.

The camp was a mixture of theory and practical exercises to get staff fire-ready for the season ahead.

"The camps are essential for developing a skilled and capable workforce for the fire

season ahead," said Forestry Corporation’s Fire Training & Operations Officer, Adrien Thompson.

“Our training program is comprehensive, and recruits also get the opportunity to learn other skills like using chainsaws, first aid, chemical use and driving 4WD vehicles and tankers when they return

to their depots.

“Safety is always at the top of this list though; our firefighters’ wellbeing is our biggest concern, and it all comes back to correct training and procedures.

“We take our firefighting responsibilities incredibly seriously; our training ensures everyone from our

most experienced firefighter through to our newest recruits are fit and ready to be deployed to the fire front.

“We also send crews to assist on large bushfires across all tenures within their local areas, interstate and even internationally, so we need to ensure we are at the top of our game,” said Adrien.

Forestry Corporation is responsible for preventing and managing fires in two million hectares of State Forests across NSW.

To find out more about Forestry Corporation’s fire training, view the video at https://youtu.be/ VoWU284o8EA or visit www. forestrycorporation.com.au.

New CWA Evening Branch to be formed

IMMENSE interest has prompted a new Nambucca Valley CWA Evening Branch to be formed.

At the recent Macksville Show, many women that visited the 100 year CWA display expressed interest in joining if a local CWA Evening Branch existed.

An Evening Branch offers

women the opportunity to be active in CWA when they cannot attend daytime branch meetings due to work and family commitments.

The Country Women’s Association (CWA) aims to improve conditions for country women and children in Australia. Women living in rural areas have long felt

isolation, and suffered a lack of adequate health and support facilities.

The CWA grew out of the need for country women to have better services and a unified voice in a maledominated rural society.

From humble beginnings in 1922, the CWA of NSW now has over 370 branches, over

8,000 members statewide and is the largest women’s organisation in Australia.

Women from the country and the city across NSW/ ACT meet to connect with others in their community, fundraise and help set policies which are lobbied for at a state level.

Members also enjoy

cooking, handicraft, art and creative writing competitions as well as teaching skills to others.

From better digital connectivity to native vegetation reforms, CWA is at the forefront of improving conditions for country women and children and will continue to provide a voice

On Sunday 30 October, the cooks at South Arm Hall will be presenting their culinary skills to the audience by serving lunch prior to a matinee performance.

On Saturday evening, 5 November, Nambucca Heads Bowling and Recreation Club will be serving dinner prior to the show.

Because all performances are catered, there won’t be any door sales, so make sure you get your tickets early, especially if you plan on seeing the production in one of the halls as seating will be limited.

The Wyz Wimmin and Friends are all donating their time, and profits will benefit the Nambucca Valley community.

for country families across NSW.

The CWA is a group for women of all ages, it’s a group that focuses on kindness to all and on helping others.

SPaDCO Fun Day

HEAVY rain forced the decision by the Stuarts Point and District Community Organisation (SPaDCO) committee to host the longanticipated Stuarts Point Fun Day in the community hall rather than the sodden foreshore park, though the sun rose gloriously on the Saturday morning of the event, which also marked the beginning of the NSW school holidays.

With live music performed by ‘Bluesville’, a petting zoo,

face painting, craft stalls, BBQ, CWA scones and loads more free activities, the frenzied afternoon concluded with a screening of the movie ‘Madagascar’, which proved to calm and delight the children.

Undeterred by a brief but intense thunderstorm, local unofficial town-crier Christopher Robinson announced the 2022 Sunflower Challenge as open, while on the newly erected front deck seed distribution was well underway.

RFS and SES crews took up positions outside along with the free coffee caravan, though some of the crews were called to attend emergency storm incidents, while indoors, the Army mascot ‘Bear’

Drumming up School Holiday Fun at the Macksville Library

YOUNG people enjoying their school holidays in the Nambucca Valley had an opportunity to do something a little different this week when the Macksville Library hosted a free Drumming Workshop.

Enabled by a grant under the NSW Government Holiday Break Program the Macksville Library enlisted the assistance of Nambucca Heads based master drummer Kaya Boom to give youth a group experience in playing hand drums.

Manager of the Macksville

Library, Mr Wes McQuillan, told News Of The Area, “We wanted to show that libraries are more than just books and craft, and drums are something everyone can do.”

Mr McQuillian’s comments were supported by Kaya who added, “Hand Drums are a musical instrument accessible to everybody and kids seem to feel the spirit of music when playing them.”

Kaya has over a decade of experience leading drumming workshops in the Nambucca Valley and surrounding districts and was able to explain and break down rhythms for the group.

Anchors Wharf is back from the ashes

ANCHORS Wharf Urunga, the iconic and community-beloved local waterside restaurant, opens to the public on Wednesday 5 October after seventeen months of recovery and refurbishment after a devastating fire on Monday 3 May, 2021.

After watching 25 years of his family’s life being dumped into skip bins in the big clean-up, proprietor Steve Ryan told News Of The Area, “The turning point was a determination to bring back Anchors Wharf restaurant bigger and better than ever.

“It’s a huge credit to the local firies from Urunga, Bellingen, Nambucca and Coffs Harbour; they saved the building.”

While it took a lot longer than expected dealing with insurance companies and bureaucracy, Steve said the process taught him patience and “not to stress too much”.

The timing gave Steve and his wife Denise the opportunity to reinvent the business and design a beautiful interior.

“We had a lot of help along the way,” Steve acknowledged, “all local.”

Winning the job, builders Reconstruct from Toormina used all local subcontractors.

“Their heart was in it,” said Steve, “they could see the place was

going to be stunning when they had finished.

“They all had a sense of pride which grew as the end result got closer.”

The whole rebuilding, design and twelve-months of staff wages for eleven people will give Steve and Denise “no change out of $2.3 million,” according to Steve.

Creative interior designer Lisa Daniel, from The Design Cupboard in Coffs Harbour, was engaged to create ‘the look’.

Lisa told NOTA, ”Anchors Wharf, an iconic site of the region, deserved to be celebrated.

“I felt the need to design according to what the name evoked, a space full of character and history, rustic, aged, yet also contemporary with an industrial edge.

“An old map of the local waterways was used to embellish the large-scale coffered ceiling.

“Recycled timber slabs were utilized throughout the build, and an undercurrent of shifting green colour tones drawing in the river, a once old, now new place inviting locals back and welcoming new people to the area,” she said.

“There’s a lot of old recycled wood, boating memorabilia and we have a map of 1960s Urunga on the ceiling as you walk in; it all gives an idea of the history of the area,” said Steve.

Not new to business-closing events, Anchors Wharf had a major flood in 2009.

“But we only closed for ten days with the ’09 flood.

“The fire was catastrophic.

“Anchors Wharf is part of the area and we have had so much support from the community.

“We’ve posted updates of the work in progress on Facebook and every time we’ve had thousands of

views and hundreds of comments each time, saying positive things and people wanting to see us back up and running.”

The Ryans have had the business for a quarter of a century and their family has grown up around it.

“It’s part of the family; our kids have learned to work in the hospitality business here, it’s a treasured part of the community

where people celebrate their special occasions.

“Life’s got to go on and we weren’t going to let it be demolished and made into a park,” said Steve.

“We’re envisioning a very busy time from opening on 5 October.

“For the first three weeks we’re doing limited numbers just to ease ourselves into and make sure we've got everything right and running smoothly.”

Right and running smoothly, the thank you celebration at Anchors Wharf on Friday 23 September went super well with 120 people attending a personal invitation from Steve and Denise to be amongst the first to see everything in full swing.

“We invited the firies, tradies, anyone who worked on the refurbishment, the police, Bellingen councillors, staff, with Mayor Steve Allan and Melinda Pavey officially opening Anchors Wharf for business, once again.”

Black and White exhibition on show at the Stringer Gallery

STEPHEN Sheppard is the October Artist of the Month at the Stringer Gallery.

Steve started doodling about 30 years ago.

Over time he added more detail and started to understand more about shading and textures.

Steve is self taught and this may be the reason his style is unique with incredible attention to detail.

His subjects vary from buildings to boats as well as animals and birds.

He uses varying thicknesses of waterproof pens.

Recently he has started experimenting by adding some colour.

Steve has books and books of his drawings but did not start exhibiting until he came to Nambucca five years ago and joined the Stringer Gallery where he regularly

He has also exhibited his works in the Gallery at Macksville Agricultural Shows and had a combined exhibition recently at

Yarrahapinni CWA enjoy Latvian Lunch

THE Country Women's Association's Yarrahapinni Branch invited the public to join them for their Latvian International Lunch on Thursday 15 September at the Stuarts Point Community Hall.

Margaret Breust, local CWA chairperson, welcomed the guests and introduced Gail Kirby, dressed in a replica of Latvian costume, who then went on to elaborate on the traditional symbolism of the intricate geometric patterns woven, knitted, carved and worn by the country people, as well as the significance of the white daisies adorning the tables, the national flower of Latvia.

The luncheon menu consisted of 'Piragi' (bacon bread rolls), 'Koltetes' (meatballs), and 'Rasois' (mustard flavoured potato

and apple salad) followed by a desert of 'Sklandrausis' (sweet carrot pie), which was enjoyed by all in attendance.

By 1pm, with all the dishes cleared away, students and staff from Stuarts Point and Scotts

Head Primary schools arrived to entertain the gathering with PowerPoint and oral presentations of their Latvian cultural studies, an initiative promoted by the CWA.

As a traditionally matriarchal society, Latvians still celebrate with seasonal folk dancing festivals, as do a strong cohort of over 1,000 residing in South Australia.

Karen Martin, a Stuarts Point local, was thrilled to win the raffle, a large fruit and vegetable tray, the proceeds of which were dispersed between the participating schools.

Sandy the Echidna returns to the wild

A MID NORTH COAST

Echidna that had a tough start to life is about to be released back into the bush thanks to the concerned citizen that rescued him, and WIRES carer Jennie Simmons.

In early January this year a worker who was slashing grass at Sandy Beach, just South of Woolgoolga, noticed an injured baby echidna, or ‘puggle’ as they are known, and contacted WIRES Mid North Coast.

WIRES Mid North Coast Echidna specialist Jennie Simmons swung into action and began the task of ensuring the puggle had a chance at survival and took the youngster, now known as Sandy, to her property in Tamban near Eungai Creek.

The experienced Jennie, who over the years has cared for more than 30 sick, injured or orphaned echidnas, told News Of The Area, “Sandy was fed a special Echidna mix developed by Wombaroo in South Australia, however for a short time had difficulties with feeding and veterinary assistance was required for

him to be tube fed.”

Jennie has a purpose built Echidna enclosure on her property and as Sandy grew he was introduced into the enclosure where conditions and food sources mimic what he would encounter in the wild.

“At two months old, Sandy has been the youngest echidna I have had in my care; however I often have adult and juvenile echidnas who have been hit by

cars, have been attacked by domestic pets or have diseases.

“This is the time of year when echidnas are out and about however, as they are nocturnal they are seldom seen, but are crossing roads at night.”

Although Sandy will be released back into the wild over the next few weeks, so many Echidnas are not as fortunate as Sandy.

When it comes to caring

for our echidnas Jennie has asked that our readers please note the following:

- If you hit an echidna with your car, please report it to WIRES with the exact location as there may be a puggle nearby and WIRES carers may be able to locate it.

- If you find an echidna on your property or bailed up by your dog, please contain the dog and you will find the echidna will depart

under the cover of darkness.

- Lastly, echidnas are territorial and should not be relocated as they are likely to make their way home, thus risk being hit by cars while crossing roads.

Help the Glossy Black-Cockatoo

BIRDLIFE Australia is calling on citizen scientists to support the bushfire recovery of South-eastern Glossy Black Cockatoos on the Coffs Coast.

Anyone who will be on the Coffs Coast, that’s Coffs Harbour, Bellingen and the Clarence Valley, during Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 October can take part in the Coffs Coast Glossy Count, no previous experience required.

Citizen scientists will learn how to identify Glossy Black-Cockatoos and their feed trees at the following local training workshops.

• Coramba Community Hall on Saturday, 15 October 2022 at 2:00 –4:00pm

• Coffs Harbour on Sunday, 16 October 2022 at 1:00 – 3:00pm.

• Online via Zoom on Wednesday, 19 October 2022 at 6:30 – 7:30pm.

Citizen scientists can register for the event and sign up for a workshop via the BirdLife website at bit. ly/glossyproject.

They can also prepare for the event using training materials and guides found on the web page.

“Bellingen Birders has a team of around 24 of its members collating sightings of Glossy Black-Cockatoos in the Coffs Coast-BellingenNambucca Heads area,” Bellingen Birder’s Richard Jordan told News Of The Area.

“We have identified 'hot spots' for these rare birds, especially in the Urunga area.

“We are looking forward to extending the scope of our surveys under the program just announced.

“There is a need to assess the inland areas burnt in the 2019/2020 wildfires.

“We hope to get to those locations to see just what effect the fires have had on the 'Glossy' population, and whether they are recovering.”

The devastating bushfires of 2019‒20 impacted over a third of the South-eastern Glossy BlackCockatoo’s distribution, damaging large areas of vital foraging and breeding habitat.

Two years on, it is now listed as Vulnerable under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, the key piece of national legislation for managing threatened flora and fauna.

Glossy Black-Cockatoos feed on particular she-oak trees for food, creating an urgent need to identify and protect remaining feed trees.

This is a considerable challenge for a widely distributed bird and so

If you see any sick, injured or orphaned wildlife call WIRES NSW 1300 094 737 or you can report online at www.wires.org.au.

citizen scientists will be crucial to efforts to collect data on the birds and their habitat.

The Coffs Coast Glossy Count is part of the Glossy Project (Coffs Coast), a new citizen science project focusing on the recovery of South-eastern Glossy BlackCockatoos on the Coffs Coast, NSW.

BirdLife and collaborators will work with the community to monitor Glossy Black-Cockatoos then use this data to guide actions to protect, enhance and create foraging habitat.

This will both secure existing feed trees and ensure there will be foraging habitat to support the birds in the years to come.

This project is funded by BirdLife Australia and the NSW Government’s Saving our Species program.

Nambucca Valley Bridge Club championship

congratulations all round.

Runners up were Maureen Cowan and Richard Levy.

NAMBUCCA Valley Bridge Club held its club championships over three weekends in September.

Club President Scott Parker welcomed club members to the highly anticipated final round, which saw twelve pairs competing for the championship on September 17, with Phil directing a six-table sharerelay.

There was plenty of friendly rivalry among members in the lead-up with players eagerly looking forward to the competition.

In an exciting competition, Mike Siford and Colin Tolley finished as the 2022 Club champions, the eighth occasion they’d taken the title, and there were warm

Winners in the novice category (less than 50 masterpoints) were Louise and Gary Walton, with Lynne and John Slade the runners up – which goes to show there’s

something to be said for husband and wife partnerships.

Nambucca Valley Bridge Club meets Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday at various times and new players are warmly welcome.

Bridge lessons continue at the club on Tuesdays under the tutelage of Mike Siford.

Nambucca Bowls

THIS week’s Grumpy’s Grumble comes to you from Grumpy’s editor, as the man himself does not currently have a functioning computer.

We will be looking to set up a Go Fund Me Facebook page to raise money to have it either repaired or replaced shortly.

Good old rain came to the

valley again last week limiting Friday’s Men’s comp to just four or so ends.

Saturday was the second last round of Pennants with two of the three grades starting the day in the running to win their grades.

Grade four went to Sawtell and possibly wished they hadn’t as Sawtell proved far too strong on the day winning 10/0. Park Beach came to

Nambucca to play our grade two team and were probably glad they did, defeating us by the same 10/0 score line.

The contest of the day was between second place Nambucca at home to ladder leaders Macksville in grade three. Macksville led by a large margin early, but our boys started a steady fight back.

With a handful of ends to play Nambucca was down by two shots in a match that had already had sufficient

ends played to constitute a game if called off for rain.

Then the heavens opened. With the greens now covered in water, play could have ended there and then with Nambucca losing but a strange thing happened.

I don’t know if it’s because our greens have exceptional drainage, or the fact that a large sum of money in a brown paper bag was being prepared for the Umpire to recommence play, but we were able to continue.

With one end to play scores were tied at 61 all.

With the skips to bowl their last two bowls each,

Nambucca Heads Roosters

appoint head coach for 2023

Roosters have appointed a new coach for the 2023 Group 2 Rugby League season.

Warwick Jones will take over the reins of the Roosters first grade side after their first season back in first grade since 2018 this year.

The new Roosters coach outlined his plans for the 2023 season.

“I think we are going to be a surprise packet next season,” he said.

“We are aiming for top two or three, and it would be nice to win the competition but obviously that is tough.”

Roosters president Peter

Bellden highlighted the new coach’s recent involvement with the club.

“He played reserve grade for the Roosters this season, and he co-coached first grade this season,” he said.

“And he has been a big part of the fabric of the club.

“He is a local junior and club legend.”

The Nambucca Heads Roosters annual general meeting will be held on Saturday, 8 October from 5.30pm at the Nambucca Leagues and Sports Club.

All positions on the club’s SRLFC committee for 2023 will be nominated and voted on.

Macksville held the winning shot.

Enter Cosi.

In what will be remembered long after the match completed (or at least for 24 hours) Cosi, impervious to nerves, moved the jack out of the head to hold two shots.

A position the Macksville skip was unable to change leaving Nambucca winners 8/2.

The crowd went wild-ish.

The play of the day however came from Park Beach amputee Doug Lambert.

Doug bowls from a wheelchair but when we recommenced the rain affected game, he decided

to deliver his last two bowls without the chair.

Standing on one leg, using a crutch and supported by another player Doug delivered a toucher with his first bowl.

Stuff of a legend.

Anyway, the week just passed was topped by a successful Hibiscus Pairs Day on Monday.

The programme for the coming week is Mixed Triples Wednesday, Women's Social Bowls Thursday, Men’s Triples Friday, and Mixed Bowls Sunday Morning.

All are welcome to play any time so just see one of our friendly people at the Bowlo.

Hoping for good weather this week.

Heating Up!

A GROUP of AFL North Coast’s top juniors are set to be put through their paces over the summer months.

The group of 28 players have committed to a gruelling series of training sessions that will be conducted between October and March, where the focus is on individual development of skills, fitness, and footy IQ.

In addition to the squad training sessions, players will also be given individual running and strength and conditioning programs to complete over the Christmas/ New Year period.

The sessions are part of

AFL North Coast’s Northern Heat representative program, which comprises the best players from the North Coast and North West regions in Under 15 and Under 17 squads.

Community Football Manager Paul Taylor said that the Northern Heat program continued to build its reputation as a way for players to help progress to a higher level of footy.

"We've had a great response to the program from players in both the North West and North Coast since it commenced in 2018," he said.

"Our focus is on preparing players to take the next step

within footy, whether that be stepping up an age group, moving into open age footy, or progressing to higher level honours, and we're already seeing our past players making a significant mark on local footy and further afield.

“This group of the most talented players from across the North Coast and North West are in for a long hot summer of both group training sessions and individual fitness work as we prepare them to take the next step in their footy pathway.”

Once again the Northern Heat program will have a Colts squad (players born 2005 and 2006) and a Futures squad (players born 2007 and 2008) and will conclude with both groups playing a pre-season match on the Gold Coast.

Additional players will be added to the program, with a number of individuals unable to attend the selection trial due to prior commitments, injury, or illness, who will trial at the first training session.

The Northern Heat representative AFL program comprises the best players from the North Coast and North West regions in Under 15 and Under 17 squads.

Players are selected into the program based on their performance at the Northern NSW Challenge.

This off-season program exists to extend the representative pathway for the players of the regions and provide them with a further avenue to build their game ahead of transitioning towards senior footy.

WITH it raining on Thursday, there were no social bowls played.

The list is still on the board for the visitation from Iluka.

This should be a fun day, so come along and join in.

Our RSL Bowlers travelled to Sawtell on Monday 26 September, joining 16 other teams from the RSL zone 7 get together day, a great day was enjoyed by all Bowlers.

There were two games of singles played on Sunday morning with Peter ‘Nobby’ Carlow accounting for Ken ‘Digga’ Grace and the other game between Andrew ‘Cracka’ Shearer taking on another young gun in Phil Brennan, Andrew running out the winner, good luck in the next round, the runners up players can join me next year.

Our pennant players travelled to Nambucca Heads, we went down 6361 in a hard fought match that see sawed right up to the last bowl, with the score locked at 61 all with one rink to play, after a hold up due to inclement weather and the synthetic greens covered in water it was problematic if the match would be completed, luckily the weather eased and the Nambucca boys put the broom over the green clearing off the final puddles.

With the end changing numerous times, the Nambucca side came away with two shots to take the match.

The washed out game against Stuarts Point will need to be played, date and time to be announced which is up to Stuarts Point as the host club).

HYPOTHETICAL

Dorin’s Draws

On the Couch with Jasminda

Email Jasminda: media@newsofthearea.com.au

DEAR Jasminda,

It is so hard to get into a local GP, that by the time my appointment has come around, my symptoms have changed or gone altogether.

What's the answer?

DONALD and Nancy were both divorcees when they met on a moonlit beach.

Their relationship blossomed and they were soon married.

They decided to purchase a house together overlooking ‘their’ beach. Both Donald and Nancy had children from their previous marriages.

Later in life, Nancy was diagnosed with dementia.

Nancy’s doctor encouraged her to get her affairs in order before she lost capacity.

Nancy used a home will kit to detail her intentions.

She decided to leave $100,000 to Donald and her half of their house to her children.

After a few years, Nancy had lost capacity and now resided in a nursing home.

Donald then decided to see a solicitor to get his estate planning affairs in order.

Donald’s solicitor informed him that if Nancy died first, Donald would inherit $100,000 and he would become the sole owner of the house as it was owned as joint tenants.

Regardless of Nancy’s intention to give half of the house to her children, the house was not her sole asset to give.

Donald, being a generous man, instructed his solicitor to take Nancy’s intentions into account and provide a solution.

It was then decided that the joint tenancy would be severed so that the property would be owned by Donald and Nancy as tenants in common.

This meant that Donald and Nancy each owned 50 percent of the property.

The effect of this being that Donald and Nancy’s children would inherit their portion of the house, rather than it being transferred to the surviving spouse.

If Donald had not sought legal advice, he would have left his estate to his children only, with the effect that if Nancy dies first, her children would not have received any benefit.

Alternatively, if Donald dies before Nancy, his children would not benefit if the property was still owned as joint tenants.

Thank you to Anthony Fogarty for his assistance with this column. Email Manny Wood, Principal Solicitor at TB Law at manny@tblaw.net.au or call him on (02) 66 487 487.

Protesters protecting regrowth forests?

DEAR News Of The Area,

The protesters (News Of The Area 23/9/2022), should have a look at the forested areas of NSW.

It might surprise them that virtually all the areas they want harvesting banned from are regrowth forests.

Why are the animals they want to protect living there?

Because they prefer a forest that has trees of all ages.

Banning harvesting in native forests will not have any impact on the survival of the species they want to protect.

Good forest management however will ensure their survival.

Good forest management does not mean

OPINION

you lock up the forests, close as many roads and tracks as possible and have a fire management system where staff get a pat on the head if they don’t achieve the planned hazard reduction targets.

An increase in investment into hardwood plantations is doomed to fail.

As soon as trees reach a millable size, the same protesters will be out wanting them reserved as they contain the animals that are under threat.

Just look at the areas of plantation that are now in reserves.

North Coast Hotel Awards Finalists Announced

A SHORT-LIST of the state’s best pubs and hospitality operators has been released ahead of this year’s prestigious AHA NSW Awards for Excellence – the first in three years.

The list of North Coast finalists includes nominees in fourteen categories including Regional Hotel of the Year, Regional Chef of the Year, Best Burger, Best Steak and Best Family Friendly.

Port Macquarie pubs are up for a host of awards including the Settlers Inn Hotel nominated for Regional Hotel of the Year, Best Retail Liquor Outlet, Best Regional Local, Best Parmi, Best Steak Sandwich, Heart of the Community and Best Regional Casual Dining (Northern).

Other Port pubs in the running for an award are Finnians Irish Tavern for Best Regional Local and Tacking Point Tavern for Best Steak.

Two top North Coast chefs will also battle it out for the title of Regional Chef of the Year including the Ivory Waterside Tavern and Marina Tweed Head’s Anton Ram-Bawn and Ocean View Hotel Urunga’s Chris Kershaw.

Nominated for Best Burger is the Tattersalls Hotel at Inverell, Beach Hotel Byron Bay for Best Live Music Venue, Lake

Cathie Tavern for Best Regional Local and the Royal Hotel Taree for Best Cheap Eat Meal (under $15), while Ivory Waterside Tavern and Marina also made the list of finalists for Best Regional Re-development and Best Family Friendly.

This year’s awards will be the first since 2019 and will be held on Monday, 24 October at The Cutaway, Barangaroo.

“The AHA NSW Awards for Excellence is the pinnacle of our events calendar and celebrates the hard work and achievements of those in our industry,” AHA NSW CEO John Whelan said.

Dear Gina,

Ms Gina R.

In regional communities it can be very challenging to get appointments, and some doctors close their books to new patients, making the pool of available doctors even smaller.

On the positive side, if your symptoms have cleared up by the time you get an appointment, it sounds as though you don't have anything too troublesome going on.

You can always refer to the symptom you had when you made the appointment, and your GP can no doubt diagnose based on that.

You can also try out a telehealth appointment.

I used this service when my son and I had Covid, since if you have a runny nose, a cough, a sore throat or myriad other symptoms these days, you may as well have the plague.

Only well people can sit in GP waiting rooms (remember the good old days when waiting rooms were full of coughing people and the kiddies were left to play with a sad lot of mucus-covered toys while the adults flicked through germy magazines).

With online doctor services, you enter a virtual waiting room and then have a phone or Zoom conversation with a GP. You can even send photos of the symptoms and get a script emailed to you.

Worth keeping in mind.

Of course, for very serious symptoms, don't hesitate to attend your local hospital.

Again, the waiting times can be challenging, but at least you're in the right place if things go really pear shaped (metaphorically speaking -- if things are really going pear shaped, you probably just need to eat less and move more).

The new category will allow the community to vote for the chance to win a prize and elevate their local pub to awardwinning status.

“We know communities in regional areas like the North Coast are passionate about their local pub, and this new category gives patrons a chance to have their voice heard,” Whelan said.

“We encourage people to take a few minutes to vote for their local and play a role in letting all of NSW know their pub is the best in the state.”

“This stand-out list of North Coast finalists is proof that despite the adversity and impacts of COVID-19 our pubs are still some of the best in the world.”

This year’s awards will also see the inclusion of a new category, the People’s Choice Award.

Voting for the People’s Choice Award are now open via https://www.ahaawardsnsw. com.au/peoples-choice

“After missing this event for the past two years due to the pandemic, there has never been a better time to come together and recognise the resilience and innovation of our incredible industry.”

FRIDAY

MOVIE: MISBEHAVIOUR

ABC, 8.30pm

Based on a true story, Keira Knightley leads this feelgood political comedy about the events that unfolded at the Miss World Pageant in London, 1970. Director Philippa Lowthorpe (The Crown) lightheartedly celebrates the women’s liberation movement, and explores racism and gender, telling the story of a group of angry young women who concocted a plot to interrupt the live broadcast of the pageant. Also starring Keeley Hawes and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (pictured above with Knightley), this movie is fearlessly fun.

Pink-haired comedian Cal Wilson is a perennial favourite guest on this long-running and much-loved musical quiz show. Tonight, Wilson showcases her music knowledge once again before she puts home bakers to the test as the new co-host of The Great Australian Bake Off by former The Voice Australia contestant Thando and one half of the electronic music duo Peking Duk, Reuben Styles, along with fellow stand-up comic Nath Valvo. Host Adam Hills and team leaders Myf Warhurst (pictured) and Alan Brough banter in the charming way only old friends can, before a stirring performance from Melbournebased international outfit Ausecuma Beats.

WEDNESDAY THE REAL LOVE BOAT AUSTRALIA

TEN, 7.30pm If they can withstand a bout of seasickness, the singles on this amorous new show have got the pick of the reality-TV dating bunch. Terrible ship food and tiny living quarters not withstanding, cruising the seas of the Mediterranean is surely the perfect backdrop for romance. Darren McMullen hosts the cheesy romp – a mash-up of Bachelor in Paradise and 1970s classic sitcom The Love Boat – aboard the Regal Princess, with Spain, Greece, France, Italy, Turkey and Montenegro on the impressive itinerary.

Controversial Aussie Below Deck star Hannah Ferrier (pictured) is all hands on deck as the cruise director helping the passengers find love.

It’s Tennis Time!

WITH its beginnings in 1956, the Nambucca District Tennis Association is one of the oldest sporting groups in

the region still in existence.

The Macksville Tennis Club is a part of that Association and this week the President of the club, Robyn Jones, told News Of The Area, “Tennis seems to be in a bit of a slump at the moment and we would like to reach out to the community

and encourage more ladies to join our group.

“Each Tuesday morning we have a ladies ‘round robin’ competition, however some of our ladies are retiring, just like Roger Federer and Serena Williams, and we would really like to keep the group going so new members

are important to us.”

The Macksville Tennis Club Tuesday Morning Ladies are holding a ‘Try Before you Buy’ day commencing at 9:00am on Tuesday 11 October 2022 where ladies can come along and see if they might like to get into tennis.

The group welcomes ladies of all ages and currently have approximately 20 ladies in the group with an age range from early 40s with the oldest player being 92 and still taking to the court.

Robyn Jones concluded by saying, “Our competition is very social and caters to

all standards of play, our fees are reasonable and include morning tea.”

If you would like to know more about the Macksville Tennis Club Tuesday Morning Ladies please call their Club Secretary, Debbie Wassell, on 0431 573 710.
