Dave Banks named Citizen of the Year
By Mick BIRTLES
THE Macksville Ex-Services Club played host to the 2023 Nambucca Valley Council National Celebration Day Awards Ceremony on the evening of Wednesday 25 January.
A large crowd attended the ceremony where so many wonderful locals were honoured for the volunteer work they do for their community.
Before the awards were presented the gathering heard from a reflective Member for Oxley, Melinda Pavey, as she approaches the end of her time as a State MP, the Nambucca Valley Mayor, Rhonda Hoban OAM and the Nambucca Valley’s Australia Day Ambassador, MS Susie Elelman AM.
MS Elelman AM, a high profile media identity, fascinated the audience with her speech that covered her parents' escape from the Nazis during the Second World War and their incredible resilience in building a new life and thriving in Australia despite prejudice and setbacks.
This year the award for the Nambucca Valley

Mayor Hoban then led the proceedings of the Citizenship Ceremony that was a joyous and moving event for everyone, especially those being naturalised.
A beaming Augustina Roberts, originally from Argentina, told News Of The Area, “This beautiful country has welcomed me and the people in Nambucca Heads are just so caring and helpful, I am so proud to call this place home and to now be an Australian.”
The gathering then heard an address by our Australia Day Ambassador, Susie Elelman AM, who spoke about just how much we have to be grateful for in this country.
Although the Citizenship Ceremony has a rather official meaning, 2NVR announcer Clint Waaka ensured it ended with a true Aussie larrikin flavour by leading the seven newly naturalised Australians in their first ‘Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oi Oi Oi’ as citizens.

New community arts festival coming to Macksville
THE Macksville Laneway Festival will take place on Saturday 11 March from 2pm to 10pm, with a packed programme of live performances, street art and workshops for the whole family.
Event organiser Phil Nicholas from Events Delivered said, “The choice of site, which spans Wallace Lane and River Street, is inspired by the colourful street art and the community spirit of the old River Festival.”
The festival is proudly funded by the NSW Government via the Reconnecting Regional NSW – Community Events Program fund, with support from Nambucca Valley Council in administering the funding.
Valley residents will be treated to live bands, a fire
show, street performers, a street art photo trail, market stalls, food trucks, kids lantern making and parade, kids and young adult circus playspace, giant games, dance performances, laneway cricket comp, artist talks and workshops.
“One of the activities I’m most looking forward to is creating a Community Rock Choir,” said Mr Nicholas.
“This is where the audience is invited to belt out popular songs at the top of their voices, accompanied by a backing band and choir.
“Song lyrics will be published on the website and accessed via a QR code at the event.”
Entry is just $2 per person.
“We’re on the hunt for a few cricket lovers to help
run the Laneway Cricket Competition,” Mr Nicholas said.
“It will be a fun knock out contest played in front of the Phillip Hughes mural
on Wallace Lane. “Local businesses can field a team of three or four players and represent their business at the festival.”

Locals continue to oppose Forest Road development
By Karen GRIBBIN
NAMBUCCA Valley Council has received an application for a Section 8.33 Review of Determination from Oscar Design and Construction Pty Ltd for DA 105/2022 at Lot 208 DP1270916 in Forest Road, Nambucca Heads.
The proposal aims to develop six residential building blocks into two, two storey (plus basement) residential apartment buildings, each with twelve x three-bedroom apartments, for a total of 24 units.
At a Nambucca Valley Council meeting on Thursday, September 15, Councillors voted unanimously to refuse the original DA for the proposal..
At the time, Mr Daniel Walsh, Acting Assistant General Manager, Engineering Services, Nambucca Valley Council cited ‘exceeding the maximum building height and adverse overshadowing on adjoining properties to the south’ as a major reason for the development application being refused.
The only changes in the revised DA relate to driveway gradients, with the height of the development now 20 percent higher than the original concept, an increase in height to 12.05 metres at its highest point.
News Of The Area spoke with concerned members of the Forest Road Action Group (FRAG) regarding the impacts of the proposed developments on their homes and surrounding community.
FRAG would like to make it clear to the community they are not anti-development; they are against inappropriate development.
“We know development is coming, and we know we can’t stop it, nor do we want to stop it,” said FRAG spokesperson Claire Melton.
“A decade ago, the Productivity Commission predicted a population explosion on the Mid North Coast from 2020 to 2050.
“We can see that that prediction has begun.
“This is an extremely critical time for us all to ensure that increased development is carried out in a way that does not negatively impact either the social fabric or the pristine beauty of the Nambucca Valley.
“We do not want to be another Gold Coast or Central Coast with a badly planned, overbuilt, traffic congested sprawling urban mess," said Claire.
Forest Road is a narrow road on the north eastern side of Nambucca Heads, over a kilometre from the Nambucca CBD.
The six blocks pertinent to this DA are high on a ridge in a subdivision zoned Residential (R1), intended for one storey dwellings only.
Oscar Design and Construction Pty Ltd are asking for rezoning from R1 to R2 with height restrictions to be raised from 8.5m to 12.05 m, nearly 40 percent higher than the current LEP height limits for the original zoning of the sub-division and existing residential blocks in the Nambucca Valley.
Neighbouring residents are concerned the proposed development will severely impact on their properties, while the development would potentially quadruple the number of residents within a small area, putting added pressure on infrastructure such as sewerage, population, stormwater, and fire control on the Forest Road subdivision.
Locals say converting six average building sites into a large multi-unit development has the potential to adversely disadvantage the community as a whole by setting a precedent for similar re-zoned developments to be built in the future.
The proposal also includes extensive excavation down into the escarpment.
FRAG have expressed concerns that the impact of construction, including silt runoff, heavy construction equipment and increased traffic, will impact the environment of the immediate area, and further to the south of the development.
While FRAG initially celebrated Council’s original decision on this development they are concerned that the community will not understand that this is a review of the original DA and that all submissions (for or against) will need to be lodged all over again.
Nambucca Valley Council were contacted for comment but did not respond by the time of publication.
Anyone wishing to make written submission to Council needs to do so before February
10 2023.
For more information about DA105/2022 at Lot 208 DP1270916 in Forest Road, Nambucca Heads, visit
https://sites.google.com/ view/forestnambucca/home.
Submissions must be addressed to the General Manager, Nambucca Valley

$4.9 million allocated for Gumbaynggirr Aboriginal Keeping Place project
THE Nambucca Valley Shire’s Gumbaynggirr
Aboriginal Keeping Place project will receive $4.9 million thanks to the NSW Government’s Regional Tourism Activation Fund.
Member for Oxley Melinda Pavey said the Gumbaynggirr Aboriginal Keeping Place has been in the minds of community members for over a decade.
“The idea was triggered with the Pacific Highway upgrades within the Nambucca Valley, which uncovered a large variety of Aboriginal artefacts with no dedicated place to store them.
“Since then, the
Valley Shire’s Gumbaynggirr Aboriginal Keeping Place project last week.
idea has expanded and grown into a place that can be a celebration of Gumbaynggirr culture including art, food, performance, storytelling and cultural tours all under one roof for Gumbaynggirr people to preserve and share with the wider community promoting and educating visitors.
“This project encourages people to travel to regional NSW, where they will experience and enjoy everything on offer.
“More tourists visiting our regional towns means a boost local economies and local jobs as more people spend at cafes, restaurants,
hotels, motels and local shops.”
Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and Tourism Ben Franklin said this new cultural facility will provide a special experience for the community to hold and share Gumbaynggirr knowledge, stories, and artefacts.
“This funding will strengthen and empower the Nambucca Valley Aboriginal community to create a space that celebrates Aboriginal culture and brings the community together for cultural sharing,” Mr Franklin said.
Major funding boost for Nambucca Valley Phoenix
A TOTAL of $648,000 has been announced for the Nambucca Valley Phoenix across two major projects.
The community operated not-for-profit will receive $347,000 through the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund for an accessible carpark and entry to the Phoenix School of Arts in Bowraville.
The organisation will also receive $337,000 through the Our Region, Our Voice’ Regional Youth Investment Program for the Bowraville Out of School Hours Education and Training Support Centre program.
“This funding will provide an Out of School Hours Education Support Centre to support youth engagement at school,
support career pathways and assist students to enter into higher education,” Member for Oxley Melinda Pavey said.
“It will also improve social, emotional wellbeing outcomes by providing youth in Bowraville access to a variety of out of school support programs, including a homework centre, digital technology, arts and music.
“I’d like to congratulate Nambucca Valley Phoenix for their successful applications which will further enhance our local community.”

Save Nambucca River group urges for remediation work
By Andrea FERRARI
The Nambucca River Estuary Management Plan in 2007 identified the reinstatement of tidal flow through the Stuarts Island Causeway as a high priority.
With a plan of 25 priorities listed from high to low, the work began well but has ground to a halt with no meetings planned since 2021.
Beverly Gibbs, a spokesperson for the group, told News Of The Area, “The committee for Estuary Management has not met for over a year and our group is still waiting for an invitation but there has been no reconvening of the committee so far.”
Degradation of the
estuary was listed as a high need for active management over the long term and in the early days remediation works were undertaken such as the 2007 ‘Bring Back the Fish Project’ by the Department of Primary Industries.
“Remediation was to improve tidal flows to one kilometre and 23 hectares of the estuary and to enhance water quality and seagrass health costing over $240,000,” said Beverly.
Today the flow is sluggish,
some remedial work has resulted in more problems and the river’s health is in danger.
“Save Nambucca River group, local Gumbayngirr Elders, Island Golf Club members, dog walkers, fishermen and boating enthusiasts are still concerned about poor water flow, sand build-up, loss of seagrasses and lack of fish habitats.
“Remediation from the culvert installation has impeded tidal flow; the opening size is inadequate, causing sand to bank on both sides of the culvert.”
Beverly said the culvert opening needs remediation work to restore healthy
water flow to the river for sustainable marine life.
“The estuary is a source of income, especially for oyster farmers and tourism.
“Recreational users also benefit from a healthy accessible river with safe access to Stuart Island.”
High tides, wave surges and minor flooding, due to an increasing lack of river depth, make access across the causeway unsafe.
Save the Nambucca River group welcomes community support.
“There’s several ways to help specifically; assist with fundraising and grants to purchase water testing kits for a Citizen Science Program, volunteer to be trained as
a water tester and sign our petition,” said Beverly.
Petitions for action on the causeway are located at Nambucca Heads Island Golf Club, The Boatshed (fishing/ boat hire next to the Boatshed café) Nambucca Heads, Earthbound Café, Bowra Street, Nambucca Heads and at the next Save Nambucca River Group meeting on Sunday 5 February at 10am at Bellwood Park, Nambucca.
For further information, email savenambuccariver@ gmail.com or telephone/text Beverly on 0422 331 878.

$300,000 announced for Stuarts Point flood proofing project
By Jen HETHERINGTON
ON Sunday January 29, Steph Cooke, Minister for Emergency Services and Resilience and Minister for Flood Recovery, dropped in to visit Stuarts Point to announce a $300,000 grant in support of a project to protect the village from future flooding.
Ms Cooke addressed a small gathering, which included Kempsey Shire Mayor Leo Hauville.
A monitoring bore will be
installed and new studies will be conducted by Kempsey Shire Council to protect the Stuarts Point community from future flood events.
“The monitoring bore will mitigate existing and future flooding risks in the local area, while the development of a groundwater study, stormwater study and flood risk management plan will help guide future decision-making,” Ms Cooke said.
“I want to thank Kempsey Shire Council for working with us to reduce the risks faced by Stuarts Point residents when
future disasters strike.
“We know that every mitigation project and strategy put in place now will ensure we are better prepared for future floods, storms and other emergencies,” Ms Cooke said.
The project will be funded through the NSW Government’s Disaster Risk Reduction Fund.
$28.8 million of the Disaster Risk Reduction Fund has been targeted at initiatives led by community organisations, councils, Local Aboriginal Land Councils, joint organisations of councils and not-for-profit organisations that make local communities safer in the future.

Stuarts Point heroes nominated for Australia Day awards
By JEN HETHERINGTON
AMONG the large crowd attending the 2023 Kempsey Shire Australia Day Awards held on Thursday 26 January at the Slim Dusty Centre in South Kempsey, were Stuarts Point ‘Local Hero’ nominees Chris Robinson, Tulsi Cutgajar, Marlene and James Hankey.
In November 2022, James, Marlene and Tulsi
were travelling along Stuarts Point Beach when they came across Chris who had discovered two dolphins stranded high up on the shoreline.
Chris had erected temporary shade for the animals, a mother and baby dolphin, and with the extra help of Tulsi, James and Marlene, they maintained a vigil of covering them with sea water while they waited for the tide to rise again.
Eventually they were able to maneuver the mother back into the water, and then ensured the baby could join her.
These life saving actions were commended by Peter Chambers, who subsequently proffered the four individuals as nominees for the Awards event, where they were noted as residents that clearly showed and acted on their care for our important marine life.
Drag Queen Bingo raises $6500 for cancer charities
By Mick BIRTLES
THE Nambucca Heads
RSL Club put the call out to come for a fun night of Drag Queen Bingo to raise much needed funds for Nambucca Valley Cancer Support and Nambucca Valley Breast Cancer Group and a great crowd rolled up raising over $6500 for those organisations.
To make it an unforgettable night the Nambucca Heads RSL Club brought in Melbourne's leading drag queen, Abril LaTrene, who was hilariously funny, visually spectacular, very cheeky and always entertaining.
In line with the charities being supported, the dress for the event was pink, pink, pink and most guests went all out to be as pink as possible.
Many of the wonderful staff members at the Nambucca Heads RSL Club joined in with the spirit of the night and showed up to work pink and fabulous.
Chief Executive Officer of the Club, Wendy Mills, told News Of The Area, “We asked the town to get behind this event because it is such a great cause, they turned up in big numbers and we all had a night of nights.
“Cancer affects everyone and these two charities do so much for cancer patients and their families in this valley and it was so wonderful to see so many locals and visitors get behind them.”
News Of The Area spoke the to President of the Nambucca Valley Cancer Support, Irene Rowsell, who said, “Every cancer patient’s needs are different, such as equipment required in the home or travel support to Coffs for treatment.
“Thanks to beautiful fundraising events like this one we are able to provide support.”
A cancer survivor herself, when asked how she was enjoying Abril LaTrene’s naughty brand of comedy, Irene replied, “I am loving it, you have to have a great sense of humor to enjoy life and you have to have that to survive cancer also.”

Shorebirds and Seabirds explored at Stringer Gallery
THE first feature artist of the year at the Stringer Gallery, Nambucca Heads is Celia Ramsay, whose exhibition focuses on Shorebirds and Seabirds.
Celia takes inspiration for her painting from watching birds on the beach or along the river shallows.
“They are not only beautiful but can be very entertaining,” Celia said.
“Egrets and herons stealthily hunt for fish and crustaceans in shallow water, their reflections imitating their every move.
“Oyster catchers stab their beaks between the rocks for molluscs or walk along the beach, their bandy legs giving them the appearance of old men.
“Cormorants can fish in
great numbers following a pelican which they trust will find some fish or can be seen on a rock or post, wings held out to dry.
“Majestic pelicans glide effortlessly along the water, take off like an old DC3 aeroplane, slowly gaining height and land skimming along the water with their legs outstretched in front of them.
“Even squawking seagulls can be entertaining as they
squabble and fight over chips thrown to them by humans.
“It would be a sad world without birds and we humans should be mindful to leave the places where birds nest and feed well alone.”

By Andrea FERRARI
SAILING starts back at Urunga Sail Training Club on Saturday 11 February 2023.
The Club meets at 9 Bellingen Street, Urunga and newcomers are welcome.
This sailing season sees the club stocked up with new lifejackets, waterproof radios, and rescue boat training bought through a Government Department of Social Services volunteers grant received last year.
Beginning in February

The courses are for beginners and anyone wanting to brush up on their
sailing skills, so no experience is necessary.
The skills learnt can be transferred to crewing and sailing on larger boats.
The Urunga Sail Training Club is a volunteer organisation with a background of ten years of sailing on the Mid North Coast, running programs for people of all ages and all abilities.
The courses are run three times per year in February, May and October.

the best it has for months, Noel Austin took full advantage after an average front nine came home with a wet sail to finish with 39 points.
Nearest of the chasers were runner up Karl
Cooper and Brad Fortescue second runner up.
Straight shooters with nearest the pin were Mike Simpson (A), Neil Cuneen (B) and John Dowzard (C
grade).
The continuing good numbers in the Mid Week Competition saw Max Graham ahead of the field with junior Luke Laverty the
best of the rest.
Lorraine King has had another win in the ladies competition with Desma Hughes runner up again.

TUESDAY 26 January: Australia Day was a designated teams event directed by our Principal Director Rob Marshall.
A fun competition where four players compete as a team against other teams.
Thanks to our Club members who brought plates of sweets and
savories with a toast of champagne at the end of play.
Winners on the day were the team of Carol McKee, Daphne Priestley, and Libby and Warwick Knight followed closely by Mike Siford, Colin Tolley, Barbara Lott and Linda Siford.

welcome.
Twenty players turned up to tune up their play.
Richard continues to supervise and help players with their bidding and strategies of play.
Thursday 28 January: Rob and Phil won N/S with Daphne and Vicky a close second.
Ali and Neil Tupper won E/W with Colleen and Scott in second place.
TWO top games of consistency singles last weekend saw Daniel Wren taking on Graham Keys and Trevor Ryan against Neil Pollard.
With both bowlers starting off twenty, it was always going to be a close affair between Dan and Graham.
With Dan up 176-174, the next end was sure to be the decider and it was Keysey who prevailed by taking a shot and a couple more in another classic encounter.
Neil spotted Trevor thirty in their clash and after end 21, that gap remained intact.
The next end saw the best bowls of the game with all eight bowls within two feet of jack.
Unfortunately for Trev, Neil had the three closest, inspiring him to lift a gear and reel the lead in six ends later, eventually taking the match 183-167.
Mixed social saw two games of triples and one pairs and the welcome return of Steve Johnson and Norm Riddell to the green, In
particularly hot conditions, the winning card was held by the trio of Steve, Laurie Summers and Dean Roe who bested Shandy, Beau and Keysey.
Toucher prizes were taken by Paul and Norm and Trev, who hadn't won the lucky bowler cash since last year, made amends to jag the thirty bucks.
The draw for the club fours is on the board so get your teams organised and ready as Pennants is closing in fast.

Dorin’s Draws

On the Couch
with Jasminda
WILLIAM disappeared 50 years ago, when he was in his mid-20s.
He was not married and had no children.
William’s sister, Jane discovers that William had superannuation and life insurance.
However, Jane is unable to have the funds released because there was no will and no death certificate.
Jane sees a solicitor and is advised that she will need to obtain a grant of “letters of administration” to have the authority to claim William’s super and life insurance.
This grant is similar to a grant of probate but is made in circumstances where there is no will.
Jane is advised that because there is no death certificate or will, extensive searches will need to be made before the Court will approve her application.
Searches are made with Births, Deaths and Marriages, Centrelink, the Department of Corrective Services, ASIC, the Department of Immigration, the Salvation Army and the four big banks.
Affidavits are sworn, detailing the searches that were made and confirming that none of William’s family members have had any contact with him since his disappearance.
William’s five siblings sign consents, confirming that they agree to Jane obtaining a grant.
An application is made to the Supreme Court.
A barrister is retained to make written submissions and the matter is dealt with “in chambers”.
The Judge asks for further searches to be made through the New South Wales Police and Facebook but these searches also prove unsuccessful.
The Court states that the “presumption of death” can be applied if there is no knowledge of the person being alive after seven years.
The Court ultimately rules that on the balance of probabilities, William is presumed to have died and that Jane is the appropriate person to administer his estate.
The Court orders that Jane be granted letters of administration on the basis that she distribute William’s estate equally amongst herself and his other surviving siblings.

The NOTA needs you!
TELLING the incredible stories of the Nambucca Valley is what News Of The Area (NOTA) is all about.
The independently-owned NOTA launched in the region in 2021 and is proud to keep locals up to date with the happenings of the area.
Now, NOTA is seeking more enthusiastic locals with a background in writing to join the Nambucca team, with a Council reporter sought in particular and a general reporter based in Macksville.
“If you have a background in writing, and a passion for your local community, I would love to hear from you,” said NOTA Group Editor Douglas Connor.
“As the paper continues to grow, we are always looking for enthusiastic wordsmiths to help cover the region’s news, sport, events, music etc.”
Writing for NOTA can be an amazing way to connect with your local community,
to meet some of the awe-inspiring locals creating change in the area, and to learn and experience the unique elements of life in our region.
Writing for NOTA is flexible, with contributor reporters able to submit as many or as few stories per week to fit in with their present lifestyle and commitments.
NOTA Reporter Andrea Ferrari said, “I absolutely love my role reporting the news and especially connecting with the people.
“I have met so many kind, generous, interesting, and community-focused individuals in my work, it heartens me to be able to share their voices, good works and fun events in the paper.”
If you want to be a part of helping the community get its weekly local news hit, then let's start the conversation.
Send us an email telling us a bit about yourself to media@newsofthearea.com.au.
DEAR Jasminda,
I was recently told I look good for my age.
On reflection, I don't think this is a compliment, but an insult.
How should I have responded?
Helen G.
Ah, the old backhanded compliment.
A bit like the backhand return in table tennis, it can put you off guard and it is only later, on reflection, that you have the time to think of the perfect way to deal with it.
It is hard to know whether people who give backhanded compliments are being genuine and are actually unaware of their faux pas, or if they are just plain cruel.
A bit like real estate ads, there's usually always a hidden meaning.
So, if someone says 'You look great for your age' at the very least it's ageism, but it also seems to say, 'I can't believe someone as old as you looks so good' and that's not a great thing to hear.
If you hear: 'Wow, you're so confident. I'd never be game to wear that,' they probably mean, 'Do you really think you can get away with that outfit?'.
How about: 'I almost didn't recognise you'.
Which suggests; 'You normally look terrible.'
Or: 'You look like I feel,' which translates to 'I feel really dodgy.'
Or: 'Every time you wear that dress it looks amazing.'
Which probably means: 'You're wearing that again!'
Maybe you could just reply with the oft-used but still punchy 'Wisdom has been chasing you, but I see you are faster' and you will probably never receive another compliment from this person, backhanded or otherwise.

New Year, new you, join VIEW!
THE NAMBUCCA Macksville Evening VIEW Club is on the lookout for new members who want to give back to their community and make new connections with women in the area.
VIEW, which stands for Voice, Interests and Education of Women, is a network of close to 300 clubs and over 14,000 women throughout Australia.
It provides a place for women to connect in the community, enjoy social activities, and develop lasting friendships – all while supporting the work of children’s education charity, The Smith Family.
Nambucca Macksville Evening VIEW Club supports the education of six students through The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program, ensuring they have what they need for the school year.
Through Learning for Life, children are provided with financial assistance for essential school supplies, access to out of school tutoring and mentoring programs, and a Smith Family team member connected to the family who is on hand to support the child’s specific needs and interests.
“We have all been hit by the rising cost of living, be it power prices, food or petrol,” said a VIEW Club spokesperson.
“But these rises have had an even greater impact on those already doing it tough.
“Parents shouldn’t have to choose between putting dinner on the table or buying their child a uniform for school.
“This is why it is so important that we can help children experiencing disadvantage with their education, so they can fit in and belong and by completing their education, create better futures for themselves.”
This year is the perfect time to join VIEW as social events are back on the calendar after going into hiatus due to the pandemic.
“We have had so much fun organising upcoming events for our club this year, starting with our birthday celebrations at our March meeting!,” the spokesperson said.
In addition to their ongoing support of The Smith Family, the Nambucca Macksville evening VIEW Club hosts social events including outings, local community speakers, fun activities, themed meetings, luncheons and activities with other local clubs.
“We are always looking for women of all backgrounds and ages to join us and look forward to welcoming new faces at our next monthly meeting.”
Nambucca Macksville Evening VIEW Club meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month at the Macksville Ex-Services
Carpe diem, Jasminda.
Club Cooper Street Macksville at 5pm for a 5.30 start.
“So why not join us and enjoy a dinner and fun activities as we raise funds to support our six Learning for Life students?”

WEDNESDAY HARD QUIZ
ABC, 8pm
Curl up on the couch for a master class in witty jibes and sarcasm with Tom Gleeson. After nabbing the coveted Gold Logie for his deadpan humour in this comedic quiz show, and now hosting the local version of the British game show Taskmaster, Gleeson (right)is riding a career high –and this is where it all started.
THURSDAY LAW & ORDER: SVU
TEN, 8.30pm
MONDAY HERITAGE RESCUE
SBS, 8.30pm
If the idea of renovating makes you shudder you need a bit of Nick Knowles’ enthusiasm in your life. The British actor and presenter has overseen everything, from small home makeovers (DIY SOS) to the colossal refurbishments, on this comprehensive and craftloving series. He describes himself as a “bit of a history nerd” which might give rose-coloured glasses when overseeing the painstaking process of refurbishing a heritage site. In tonight’s final, he follows the £40 million (that’s around $A70 million) restoration of Stowe House in Buckinghamshire.

In tonight’s season eight premiere, Gleeson enters the fray with a process engineer who adores The Lion King nanny who knows smallpox; a software engineer who plays Legend of Zelda and a dill-pickle maker who likes antique purses. Tune in to find out who will thwart Gleeson’s own specialist subject to score the Big Brass Mug.
After 24 seasons, we all know dedicated detective Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) is every sex offender’s worst nightmare. “You know, men like you become so good at lying they even begin to believe the ones they tell themselves,” snarls Benson in tonight’s disturbing instalment titled “Breakwater”. It’s glaringly obvious who the bad guy is, but the problem lies with whether the SVU team can pin this conniving predator for his crimes. The story has some distressing developments, making for hard-to-watch TV, but Carisi’s (Peter Scanavino) surprising and gratifying turn against the predator makes for a welcome thrill.
