Buluunggal Festival to celebrate Gumbaynggirr connections with Country
“Everyone is invited to come join us again to celebrate the ongoing signficance of the mullet run for relationships with Country,” said Uncle Bud.
“I want this to be another fun day for people to experience how strong this place is and to connect with Gumbaynggirr culture.
“The day is about connection and respect.
“That is the important thing and the main thing I want to share,” said Uncle Bud.
The Buluunggal Festival aims to be a day where Gumbaynggirr Custodians can share connections with Country and nourish
relationships with buluunggal and the Nambucca River.
The day will include Gumbaynggirr storytelling, dance, music, stalls, and a free mullet BBQ for all to enjoy.
“The day is important for all who live on Gumbaynggirr Country because Country belongs to everyone, we don’t own it.
“We are here protecting it, looking after it and showing everyone else.
“People have got to learn the connection,” Uncle Bud continued.
This year’s festival will feature local musician Manduway Dutton and local bands Gunganbu, Juumbal Dreaming, Hot Mess and Kaya Boom.
An important part of
the festival is learning from Gumbaynggirr Elders and deepening community appreciation of Gumbaynggirr seasons, cycles, and relationships that continue along the Nambucca River.
“My Uncle Benjie would sit up on that wall there, right in the middle.
“He’d watch the mullet come across the river.
“He’d know exactly where the mullet were going and then, bang, he would spear them.
“Our job as boys was to hold
the end of the fishing line. Uncle Benjie would dive right in after the fish.
“He could hold his breath for the longest time.
“Aunty Byne would say, ‘Look out, here they come,’ and the mullet would come,” Uncle Bud explained.
“I want everyone who comes here to know where they are.
“I want them to follow in the footsteps of our ancestors.” Uncle Bud concluded.

Event explores pathways to Nambucca Valley youth employment
start on their career journey,” said Kerry Grace, CEO of RDAMNC.
“There is a lot of information and support out there for both parents and employers, but it can be hard to find, complex and overlapping between different levels of government.
“We hope that by bringing all the different groups together in one room, we were able to facilitate new connections that will help Nambucca Valley young people find and keep good local jobs.”
A number of service providers, including the Nambucca Valley’s ShoreTrack, were on hand to provide details about their programs.
ShoreTrack co-founder Jill Ashley said they provide “programs which focus on developing young people’s skills and confidence through handson project-based activities while linking them to industry and
community-based mentors”.
Jasper Goldthorpe is one such local who has benefited from ShoreTrack support.
“I left school last year and struggled a bit getting into work,”
Jasper said.
“ShoreTrack has been very supportive in getting me into a Certificate 2 Rural Operations, and work experience with Macksville Motors and Autocare, and I absolutely love working there,” said Jasper.
Laura Peisley, a Career Development Manager from Career Tools, was the event’s keynote speaker.
Informative panels were also offered on preparing young people for work and how to connect with employers.
“One of the issues I have observed in youth employment is the disconnect between schools and industry, both sectors want to connect but speak a different language,” said Ms Peisley.
“A combination of facts and
data about career pathways, like that delivered by schools, in combination with experiential and emotional information such
as that given by parents and employers, is necessary to fully engage young people in their career pathways.”

‘Women in Art’ exhibition launched at Matilda Street Gallery
By Karen GRIBBIN
THE Nambucca Valley
‘Women in Art’ exhibition launched at Macksville’s Matilda Street Gallery on Saturday 29 April.
35 artists feature in the exhibition and more than 70 people attending the opening event.
The event was sponsored by the Nambucca Valley Women’s Business Network (NVWBN) and Diana Does Books, a local bookkeeping
business.
“We were overwhelmed by the response of the community to this event, which featured a range of talented local women artists,” said Libby Foster, NVWBN committee member and exhibition organiser.
“We also had local musician Alicia Parry performing, who was fantastic and provided a great atmosphere, and the event was catered for by the Macksville Ex-Services Club.
q The Women in Art exhibition has 35 artists exhibiting, with 70 people in attendance on opening night.
q Nambucca Valley Women’s Business Network committee members Diana Wilkinson, president Sara Runciman, Lynette Howell, exhibition organiser Libby Foster and Kim Thomson.
“The quality and range of the artworks are impressive.
“The exhibition will remain in place until 20 May, so I urge everyone to check it out when in town.”
An art exhibition may seem like a departure from NVWBN’s typical businessrelated networking breakfasts, but according to Sara Runciman, NVWBN president, these kinds of events are just as relevant.
“Our core purpose as a group is to support, empower and inspire Nambucca Valley
Construction commences on mobile telecommunications tower
NAMBUCCA Valley
Council has engaged Telstra Corporation Ltd to commence construction of a Macro Base mobile telecommunications tower to be located on South Arm Road, South Arm.
It is hoped the tower will improve outdoor coverage across targeted areas and indoor telecommunications coverage across the Nambucca Valley.
Works commenced 2 May 2023, and Council anticipates minor interruptions to local traffic for approximately two months during the course of construction.
Council received joint Australian and NSW Government funding totalling $971,250.00 for the construction of the telecommunications facility under the Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Fund.
The funded project is a community-led initiative identified during the
recovery of communities, businesses and industries impacted by the devastating Black Summer bushfires.
“Council apologises for any inconvenience that may be caused and requests residents adhere to all traffic control instructions during the construction of the new telecommunications tower,” a Nambucca Valley Council spokesperson told News Of The Area.

Medical professionals raise awareness of heart disease
MACKSVILLE Medical Centre and Hibiscus Medical Rooms are raising awareness of heart disease as part of Heart Week (1 – 7 May).
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Australia, with a person dying every half an hour, according to the Heart Foundation.
More worrying is that two thirds of at-risk people ignore
their symptoms. There are many types of heart disease and a lot are often preventable.
So how can you prevent heart disease?
“By eating well, regular exercise, avoiding smoking and going to see a doctor regularly – which is important if you have diabetes, high blood pressure or cholesterol
issues - you may reduce the risk of heart disease,” advises Doctor Sangita Khobragade from the Hibiscus Medical Rooms in Nambucca Heads.
“A heart health check takes less than thirty minutes and could save your life.
"If you are 45 years, or over, or over 30 years and of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, a Health Heart Check is recommended.”
Both the Macksville
q The Macksville Medical Centre and Hibiscus Medical Rooms have been decorated for Heart Week. Anne Thomas (left) and Lesa Hennessey.
Medical Centre and the Hibiscus Medical Rooms have decorated their offices to promote heart disease awareness, entering the annual Heart Foundation creative display competition held in medical facilities
nationwide.
“If our office display encourages just one person to think seriously about their health and book a heart check-up it will be a great week,” said Casey Shorter, Practice Manager.
You can contact the Macksville Medical Centre on 02 6568 1155 or the Hibiscus Medical Rooms in Nambucca on 02 6568 6569 for an appointment or book online at MacksvilleMedicalCentre. com.au.
Irish singer-songwriter Áine Tyrrell locks in Bowraville show
By Mick BIRTLES
OVER the last couple of years
Irish singer-songwriter Áine Tyrrell has been booked to appear at the Bowraville Theatre twice, however Mother Nature had other ideas.
On the first occasion
Aine was turned back to her Mullumbimby home as fire had cut the highway to the north of Grafton.
On the second attempt it was pandemic related restrictions that required the show be cancelled.
Now, with a little luck of the Irish on our side, Áine will be hitting Bowraville on Saturday 27 May on her ‘Irish as F*ck, not Irish Folk’ tour.
On this tour Áine Tyrrell is breaking down the stereotypes surrounding
her music and heritage, traversing three states with twelve shows across major cities and rural centres.
Áine Tyrrell, a multiinstrumentalist, songwriter, activist, and mother, is incredibly proud of her heritage, despite the continuous and ongoing connotations surrounding Irish music as Irish folk and assumed ‘Irish’ behaviour associated with the heritage.
Hailing from a rich Irish lineage of music, Áine’s artistry cannot be confined to a single genre, as she rejects the limitations imposed by the music industry's narrow definition of Irish folk.
Instead, she is redefining her rise through her unique genre, 'Irish as F*ck,’ blending spoken word, hip hop, acoustic guitars, and powerful
vocals.
A reflection of the brave new world we are entering, one that is post-genre, postpandemic, post-colonial, and post-traumatic.
Tyrrell explained to News Of The Area that she got the inspiration for this tour from a close friend.
“The name of this tour came after a discussion where I could see how the industry was placing limitations on the folk genre and because of such assumptions, placing unfair boundaries on my creativity as an artist.
“In discussion with my genre-busting dear friend Jen Cohler, she so eloquently stated that ‘Irish folk’ was damaging me and quite frankly could never contain me, but that I was ‘Irish as F*ck.”
Áine Tyrrell wants the tour to also make the audience reflect on their own heritage and how we treat others.
“What I am really looking forward to on this tour is starting a bigger conversation and connection on how we see and define each other, how much better off we all will be if we can open our hearts to the humans in front of us and not be constricted by expectations of race, gender, cultural background, socioeconomic background.”
Áine Tyrell is appearing at the Bowraville Theatre on Saturday 27 May 2023 with the support act starting at 7:30 pm.
To get tickets go to the www.bowravilletheatre.com. au and follow the links or go directly to www.oztix.com.au and search for Áine Tyrrell.

Have your say on Kempsey Shire Council’s plans for 2023-24
RESIDENTS of Stuarts Point and other Kempsey LGA communities are invited to have their say on the $167 million dollars allocated to drive community and economic growth in the Shire during the 2023-24 financial year.
Kempsey Shire Council’s draft annual budget for the coming year was unveiled at the April Ordinary Meeting of Council on Tuesday 18 April.
Big winners included in the budget are the water and sewer network with over $46 million dedicated to maintenance and
upgrades and around $50 million towards improving the road and bridge network.
With Councillors providing their endorsement to place the draft budget on exhibition, it is now time for the community to review the plans and provide feedback.
Also available for public comment is the Schedule of Fees and Charges, Revenue Policy, Rates Map and the Long Term Financial Plan.
Kempsey Shire Council Mayor Leo Hauville said the best outcomes are reached when the community engages in the decision-making process.
“I highly recommend that
residents take the time to review the documents and provide feedback on the Council's plans for the upcoming financial year,” said Councillor Hauville.
“The budget includes plans to advance several significant projects, such as the upgrading of Lloyd Park in Crescent Head and Horseshoe Bay, the construction of new water treatment plants for areas like Willawarrin, and the development of the Five Headlands Coastal Experience.”
“The content of each document is a result of careful community consultation and high level diligence by Council staff, led by the General Manager, Craig Milburn.
SPaDCO holds April community meeting
By Jen HETHERINGTON
ON WEDNESDAY 26 April, the Stuarts Point and District Community Organisation (SPaDCO) held their second community meeting of 2023 at the Community Hall in Stuarts Point.
First Aid trainer Wayne Cook was guest speaker on the night, explaining the access and use of a newly installed defibrillator located externally at the Point Café.
Following a light supper,
chairperson Mary-Lou Lewis reported on recent SPaDCO activities and communications which included a submission to Kempsey Council’s Growth Management Study, which is informed by the Scenic Protection Layer, Employment Lands Audit, Local Character Statement Review and Local Housing Strategy.
A short report was then delivered by Allum Property Group, the proposed developers of a large scale residential development in Stuarts Point, which noted delays to the project due to impending council studies.
Other information was
provided regarding Council’s Road Safety report, the results of a development proposal survey, the Stuarts Point Hall committee, Council’s weeds officer response, funds for Stuarts Point School, Council’s commencement of drainage works, Crown Lands’ middle beach car park and fund raising for Turkey’s earthquake.
A media report spoke of activities via local print, radio and social media and the progress of a dedicated website, soon to be launched.
The next community meeting is scheduled to be held on 28 June 2023.
“I would like to acknowledge Council’s leadership team and staff for their dedication to develop each of them.”
Kempsey Shire Council General Manager Craig Milburn said replacing 56 timber bridges in the Kempsey Shire should wrap up within the coming financial year.
“Council's infrastructure delivery team will continue to work on this program, which is expected to be completed in April 2024, ensuring safer and more efficient transportation for the community.”
“Council is also prioritising modern and sustainable waste management, with landfill cell 4 to be operational and the
Waste Management Strategy
implemented.”
“Our financial position continues to be challenging with an operating deficit forecast for the financial year. “Driving this is the impact of inflationary cost pressures, labour costs, and lately, rising interest rates and borrowing costs.
“A detailed body of work will be undertaken over the next six months to consider all available options to address Council’s financial position.”
The draft Integrated Planning and Reporting suite is on exhibition until Sunday 21 May 2023.

Comedians talk power of humour on World Laughter Day
By Andrea FERRARI
‘LAUGHTER is the best medicine’ is a proverb repeated throughout history, the premise of which has been proven by the medical profession and, since 1998, celebrated on the first Sunday of May as World Laughter Day.
“There’s nothing quite like live comedy,” Coffs Comedy founder Ben Stevenson told NOTA.
“There is something wonderful about being in that moment when a comedian is eliciting laughter from an audience as though they were an orchestra conductor, the entire crowd bonding over someone else’s silly thoughts.
“The only greater feeling
is when you get to be the one on stage.
“As comedians, we have good and bad nights.
“Sometimes we ‘bomb’ and feel like the least funny person in the world, but every so often we ‘crush it’ and the rush you get makes you feel like you could rip a car door off its hinges,” said Ben.
World Laughter Day was established and first celebrated on Sunday 10 May 1998, in Mumbai, India, arranged by Dr. Madan Kataria, founder of the worldwide Laughter Yoga movement.
Bianca Spears is a ‘Laughter and Wellbeing Facilitator’ and empowerment coach based in Sydney who uses “laughter, play,
psychology and neuroscience” to help people “heal, rewire their minds and reclaim their lives through her NeuroPLAYstic approach”.
“Laughter yoga or laughter wellness sessions are a great way to begin intentionally laughing, as they’re an easy, guided way to accumulate more laughter and stay engaged,” Bianca told NOTA.
Bianca says laughter is much more significant than simply a reaction to something funny.
“I believe laughter is a natural tool for exercising and expressing, for relieving tension and re-establishing calm - think about awkward laughs - and it’s a tool we can use intentionally.
“Hundreds of thousands of people across the world, including scientists and researchers, understand that laughter is a readily available superpower for our health and wellbeing.
“Laughter Yoga is a method of belly laughing on purpose, ‘for the health of it’, and was created by a doctor (Dr. Kataria) after he researched, discovering the truth behind the old adage ‘Laughter is the best medicine’,” she said.
So what are some of the benefits?
“Physically, laughing tones and relaxes our muscles and helps to move toxins out by acting like a pump for our lymphatic system,” Bianca said.
“It oxygenates our cells and improves circulation.
“When we laugh, we release a cocktail of feelgood chemicals including endorphins; natural opiates
Trauma experiences contribute to young people using violence in the home
SYSTEMS which categorise young people as either perpetrators or victimsurvivors has left services unable to recognise the ongoing impacts of trauma on young people who have experienced adult-perpetrated domestic and family violence or who may have other unmet support needs.
Released this week by Australia’s National Research Organisation for Women’s Safety (ANROWS), the ‘WRAP around families experiencing AVITH: Towards a collaborative service response’ report found that difficulty recognising and
understanding adolescent violence in the home results in young people and their families falling through service gaps.
A major finding of the research was that the impacts of adult perpetrated harm –both previous and current – were the “single greatest contributing factor” to the complex scenario of young people using violence at home.
Importantly, families who had struggled to get support for children’s other needs, including needs related to communication, neurodivergence or wider
experiences of victimisation, required coordinated support to address their child’s responses to feelings of distress.
The new report by Elena Campbell, Associate Director, Centre for Innovative Justice RMIT University, follows the findings of the PIPA project: Positive Interventions for Perpetrators of Adolescent Violence, which identified the necessity of wraparound, collaborative responses to address the risk and need across the family.
One of the primary findings found that mothers
and children who have experienced adult-perpetrated domestic and family violence and the ongoing impacts of trauma, need “opportunities to build attachment and form their collective identity around positive experiences.”
Padma Raman PSM, CEO of ANROWS, stated that this research shows why children must be recognised as victimsurvivors in their own right, which the National Plan to End Violence against Women and Children 2022-2032 recognises.
“Many young people who are using violence in the home have themselves experienced domestic and family violence.
“This research highlights
the need for greater understanding among services systems about the impacts of DFV, trauma and reasons why young people use violence,” Ms Raman said.
“This research shows the need for additional supports, sufficient resourcing of services, and a suitably skilled workforce to provide traumainformed care and support, rather than just punitive or accountability measures.”
Ms Campbell said many services and individual practitioners have been working hard for a long time to respond to this complex issue.
“It cannot be the remit, however, of just one sector.
“With a wide range
that help to reduce pain.
“Mentally, a good chuckle reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression, also lowering stress chemicals in our system including cortisol.
“It sets fertile ground for building new neural pathways, allowing for easy, fun and lasting habit change.
“Laughter, and the playful perspective that tends to come with it, allows us to build a strong, resilient mind and take life more lightly.
“Cognitive function improves as we laugh, and after a laughter wellness session, many people experience a lifting of brain fog and mental clarity that they find refreshing and relieving.”
For those interested to learn more, Laughter Yoga and Laughter Wellness sessions can be found online.
of needs across a family structure – including those resulting from past or current abuse – we need a clear, coherent and coordinated framework through which policymakers, organisations and practitioners alike can respond.
“This AVITH Collaborative Practice Framework aims to be the first step on the road to recognition – and to services being resourced to provide the support they know is required.”

The Mid North Coast Veteran Golfers Association player hit a hole in one while playing at the Nambucca Island Golf Course on Tuesday, 4 April.
The Coffs Harbour Golf
Club member hit the hole in one on the 18th hole, and recalled the moment he achieved the rare feat.
“A guy was waiting there on the 18th, as he had finished his round and had come back to get his pen,” he said.
“When I hit it, I thought it would have gone off the green and I’d have to hit it
back on there from behind the green.
“We didn’t see it go in as it’s a slightly raised green, and the guy who was waiting there said it had gone in, and we said ‘sure it did mate’, and I didn't believe him at first.
“But when I got up there to the green the ball was nowhere to be seen, and sure enough it had gone in

It was a game that had everything - a big lead that was pegged back, a close score on the big board and
Grumble:
bowls played had spectators saying ‘he can't play that!’.
Bonzi, Ello, Owen and Drum jumped out to a handy 19-0 lead after 6 ends and had people asking ‘is that really Drum?’
He was on fire.

Blackford, Oxy and the Wizz went a bit the other way, going down 14-5 in the first half of the game before fighting back and getting 2 on the last end to record a 18-17 win.

Cosi had a fall before a bowl was bowled, and battled on gamely until the

Mr Woolies Dallas Nancarrow filled in and led the side to a 20-19 win, giving the 5s a 69-60 win. Well done boys.

Group 2 Referees Association puts the call out for referees
By Aiden BURGESS
HAVE you ever thought about refereeing?
With the latest Group 2 Rugby League season recently kicking off, that’s the question the Group 2 Referees Association are asking as they look for more people to officiate games.
More rugby league referees are needed this season to make sure the numerous games in each competition can go ahead.
Group 2 Referees Association’s Blake Smoothy said there were ideal candidates in the local rugby
league community who would make good referees.
“There are ex-players out there who would make really good referees,” he said.
“They understand the game, and as an ex-player myself, I just really love the game, and when you take yourself out of the team or club aspect and take control of the game by officiating, I find it’s rewarding.
“Ex-players who referee are using a skill-set they otherwise wouldn’t use, as they have a good footy brain and know the rules which helps them with the responsibility of controlling
the game.”
Smoothy also encouraged others in the rugby league community to give refereeing a try.
“People like parents who have kids who play, there is a pathway for people to step up and have a go,” he said.
“People who have been around the game and enjoy the game, if coaching or being a committee person is not for you, refereeing is another way of giving back to the game.”
The Group 2 referee highlighted the benefits of officiating rugby league.
“It’s massive self-
satisfaction giving back to rugby league, and being an integral part of the game,” he said.
“It helps develop your communication skills and how you work with others, and there are a lot of problemsolving skills as well.
“You make connections from across all clubs and meet a lot of different people.
“It keeps you fit, and if you can do two or three games, you can walk away with $300 for the day.”
Anyone interested in giving refereeing a try can contact the Group 2 Referees Association by visiting their Facebook page, or by email at gp2referees@gmail.com.

Tuesday’s “Island Challenge” Medley Stroke sponsored by Toyota Genuine Service is growing in popularity, attracting a good field of nearly 50 players, and some excellent golf scores. David McBaron (3) and Colin
Habgood (8) both scored 66 net, with David winning on countback. Jaydan Taylor (1) from Sawtell had 68 off the stick. Thea Kimber (27) was the best Lady player net 68.
The only other player to play to his handicap and rewarded with a sleeve of quality golf balls was Scott Burley 68.
NTP’s to Jaydan Taylor on 5, Jan Harris on 7, Scott Burley on 8, Tony O’Rourke (Bonville) won the “Pizza This” voucher on 13, Stephen Kimber on 15 and Stuart Johnston won the Pro Pin Jackpot on 18.
Wednesday was the Women’s Monthly Medal.
Amanda Carr (11) from Armidale won Division 1 (0
to 21) on countback from Angela Paton (20) both net 74.
Another countback in Division 2 (22 to 28), with Liz O’Hara (28) winning from Heather Gray (26), both 73 net.
Runaway winner in Division 3 (29 to 45) was Fiona Chaffey (45) with net 61 from Wendy Ritchie (31) with net 73.
The Ball Rundown to net 77 on countback.
Gross winners were Chris Clarke (Bonville), Judith Boyle and Robyn Jones.
NTP’s to Dianne O’Leary and Robyn Dyer on 5, Susan McWilliam (Darwin) won the “Pizza This” voucher on 13, Chris Clarke won the
week and was played on Thursday.
I don't know the result at the time of writing but I'm confident the Gnome will stay in its home - the trophy cabinet - at Nambucca.
There's not many days left to get your teams in for Major Minor Pairs, so check the board, ask a mate and get into it.
Social Bowls are moving along, but we can always
accommodate a few more players.
So, when you see somebody who hasn't played for a while, ask them ‘why?’.
Tell them about what is happening at your club and let's get them back.
The Ken Howard Carnival is not far away and it looks like a big weekend is in store with 32 sides entered.
So put that date 10-12 June in the calendar, come meet your old mates and watch some great bowls.
Pro Pin Jackpot on 18, and Amanda Carr won the Putting competition.
The field for Thursday’s “Dolphin Day” Medley Stableford sponsored by Nambucca Heads RSL was pretty well halved due to the continuing light rain most of the day – many ventured out, only to return wet and sorry that they didn’t opt to enjoy the hospitality of the Clubhouse.
My wet hat off to those that completed the 18 Holes!
Overall Winner, and recipient of the Dolphin Day golf shirt was Stephen McNeil (12) with 37 points.
Division winner was Jeramy Ashman (13) with 34 points from Peter Drysdale
into their first goal through their skipper Sarah Mander.
“Corindi being a goal down started to push forward, however the Strikers’ defence led by Hope Leslie was clinically shutting down attack after attack.
“Fast ball movement on the counter-attack led to a great team goal in which Sarah Mander again caused havoc in the opposition’s penalty area.
“However, not all things went the Strikers’ way, on 35 minutes while competing for a 50-50 ball, she fractured her tibia and had to leave the

In Division 2 (19 to 45), Brad Southan (20) from Macksville and Hans Jansen
field.
“Our pace at the back was the hallmark of this win, Virginia Arkell playing a great game on the left covering acres of ground and causing no end of trouble for the home team.
“The whole team performed very well, they gave everything, nothing is left on the pitch, the spirit of this team is their secret,” said Rhys.
The Strikers play Boambee on their home turf at Coronation Park at 2pm on Saturday 6 May in women’s division two.
(21) both scored +1, Brad winning on countback.
Other good scores from Edward Penrose +2, Peter Bush, Jeramy Ashman & David Mattacott all +1. The ball rundown went to -2 on countback.

Sea Eagles take on Grafton Ghosts at Macksville
By Bruce AULSEBROOK
THE Macksville Sea Eagles took on the Grafton Ghosts across four grades in their round two Group 2 fixture on Sunday 30 April.
A warm sunny day greeted a good crowd at Alan Gillett Oval, where Macksville came away with wins in three out of the four games.
FIRST GRADE
The First Grade game was a tough encounter, with the Grafton Ghosts emerging 22 to 10 victors.
The first half was dominated by the Ghosts, who defended very well and controlled the game with good ball handling.
Macksville's poor ball control had them on the back foot for most of the first half, with repeated turnovers giving the Ghosts good field position and a half time lead of 16 nil.
With Macksville Captain/ Coach Matt Hyland unable to continue due to injury, the second half started the same as the first, with the Ghosts controlling the rucks and backing that up with good defence.
Macksville got their score rolling with tries to Finnian Walsh and Jacob Simpson, and a conversion to Shane DavisCaldwell.
Billy Cockbain and Sam Miles put in strong performances and Andrew Blair had a solid game at fullback.
RESERVE GRADE
The Reserve Grade game was a high scoring affair with Macksville running out 50 to 12 winners over the Grafton Ghosts.
Macksville led 30 nil at half time.
Some poor discipline from both teams saw a number of players in the sin bin.
Try scorers for Macksville were Josh Bartlett (two tries), Wyatt Rouse (two tries), Jake Simpson (one try) and Ryan Gleeson (one try).
Cam Cohen got two tries and kicked five goals with Rhiley Maxwell kicking a goal as well.
Best for the Sea Eagles were Josh Bartlett, Cam Cohen and Jake Simpson.

AFL North Coast’s junior season begins
By Aiden BURGESS
AFTER waiting eight long months for their weekly dose of playing footy, the region’s Aussie Rules juniors returned to the field for the opening round of the AFL North Coast junior season.
Junior players from clubs spanning north to Yamba
and south to Port Macquarie returned for another season to play the game they love.
Competition Coordinator Brad Greenshields said the AFL North Coast’s junior competitions were thriving as the 2023 season got underway.
“Teams wise we’ve had a big increase as we’ve gone
from having 31 last year, to 45 this year,” he said.
“A lot of that has to do with the Youth Girls, which has increased by 33 percent from last year.
“Every Sunday between Yamba and Port Macquarie we have 20 games on, which is impressive.”
He said AFL North Coast
was aiming for even more teams and competitions in the near future.
“Having 45 teams is a good start, but next year we want more and more,” he said.
“With the Youth Girls, clubs have committed to move the age groups from the current 14s and 17s, to 13s, 15s and 17s.”

chase by the Rebel backs caught Jai before he could get to the line.
From there a series of handling errors from the visitors gave the home side plenty of the ball but they were unable to turn this possession into points.
When South Grafton were able to complete sets the Roosters experienced an extended period under pressure defending their line and eventually South Grafton’s Nick McGrady crossed the line.
Nambucca soon responded when a Tyronne Roberts-Davis grubber kick resulted in a Zac Johnson try that was converted by Tyronne to bring the score to 12-4.
With just three minutes left in the first half a 40 metre run by Roosters Fullback
Robbie Smith resulted in a try and again, was converted by
Tyronne Roberts-Davis.
The home side were up 18-4 at the break.
The second half saw South Grafton lift in all aspects of their play.
The visitors were able to pile on the points and the healthy half-time lead evaporated to 18-16 with thirteen minutes on the clock.
Rebels defence held the Roosters scoreless in the second half and South Grafton’s Nick McGrady was able to cross again, costing Roosters the game.
The warm dry afternoon at Coronation Park was enjoyed by the large crowd that turned up to watch four games of quality rugby league.
The Nambucca Roosters U/18s took on a very evenly matched South Grafton squad with both teams making minimal errors and being able to complete sets.
At the fifteen minute mark the young Roosters identified weakness on the South
Grafton right edge and were able to exploit this for points, going to the break 14-6 in front.
Both teams played great rugby league and the U/18 Roosters appear to be fine tuning all aspects of their football with each game.
The Reserve Grade clash provided spectators with a very entertaining game of footy.
The Roosters outfit were hungry for a win after going down to Woopie last week and, despite Grafton drawing first blood early in the game the Roosters attack was on point and line-breaks by Jason Jarrett, and Leroy Buchanan turned into points.
The Roosters were convincing winners in this game with a score of 36-12.
The Nambucca Roosters Women’s Rugby League played at home this week and what a difference a week makes, as the team’s improvement from Round 1
was remarkable.
The Wauchope Women’s Team came north to take on the Roosters and both teams were playing to win, locking the game up 10-10 by halftime.
Although the Nambucca
girls grew more confident as the game went on the visitors were able to stack on two unanswered tries to win 1814.
The Nambucca Roosters Women’s Rugby League left the field with their heads
held high in the knowledge of their significant improvement since Round 1.
The Nambucca Roosters Men's teams are away against Coffs Harbour this weekend and the Roosters Women are playing at Sawtell.

HYPOTHETICAL Taking a Legal Look

Agonising Court ruling in estate claim
MARY passes away after a three-year bout with cancer.
She leaves two adult children, David and Julie.
Julie lived with Mary for fifteen years prior to her death.
Mary’s will gifts her four-bedroom home to Julie and only makes nominal provision for David.
There is a mortgage on Mary’s home, with $300,000 owing.
Mary also made a binding death benefit nomination in relation to her superannuation, with the effect that Julie receives 90 percent and David receives ten percent of the death benefit.
Julie uses her share of the super to pay $200,000 off the mortgage.
David makes a claim against Mary’s estate, seeking further provision.
David says that Julie does not need a four-bedroom home and asks for it to be sold so that he can receive a share of the proceeds of sale.
He says he needs funds to meet his living expenses due to various health problems preventing him from obtaining employment.
David discloses his financial circumstances, indicating he has no savings.
David also asks for the Court to order the redistribution of Mary’s superannuation, so that he receives a greater share.
Julie says that she cared for her mother during her illness and that she should not be ordered to vacate the home. Julie also provides the Court with a letter, hand-written by Mary, stating that Julie had been “a blessing during times of need”.
Julie adduces subpoenaed records from David’s previous employer and Facebook posts as evidence that David’s alleged health issues do not render him incapable of working.
Julie also produces bank statements indicating that David has not disclosed a bank account with a balance of $10,000.
Nonetheless, the Court accepts that both parties have demonstrated that they have financial needs but ultimately, having “agonised” in assessing the matter, rules against awarding David with additional provision and orders the parties to pay their own legal costs.

Do you want to write for the NOTA?
TELLING the incredible stories of the Nambucca Valley is what News Of The Area (NOTA) is all about.
The NOTA launched in the Valley in May 2021, and is proud to keep locals up to date with the happenings of the area.
Now, NOTA is seeking more enthusiastic locals with a background in writing to join the team.
Are you a freelance reporter, current or ex-journalist, or simply a passionate and quality writer?
“If you have a background in writing, and a passion for your local community, I would love to hear from you,” said NOTA Group Editor Douglas Connor.
“As the paper continues to grow, we are always looking for enthusiastic wordsmiths to help cover the region’s news, sport, events, music etc.”
Writing for NOTA can be an
amazing way to connect with your local community, to meet some of the awe-inspiring locals creating change in the area, and to learn and experience the unique elements of life in the Nambucca Valley.
NOTA Reporter Andrea Ferrari said, “I absolutely love my role reporting the news and especially connecting with the people.
“I have met so many kind, generous, interesting, and community-focused individuals in my work, it heartens me to be able to share their voices, good works and fun events in the paper.”
Writing for NOTA is flexible, with contributor reporters able to submit as many or as few stories per week to fit in with their present lifestyle and commitments.
If you want to be a part of helping the community get its weekly local news hit, then let's start the conversation.
Send us an email telling us a bit about yourself to media@ newsofthearea.com.au.
ANZAC Day dawn service misses the point
DEAR News Of The Area, ANZAC Day is a day of commemoration of the landing of Australian and New Zealand troops on Gallipoli.
It also commemorates all who served and died in all the other conflicts in which Australians and New Zealanders represented their country.
The dawn service is a vigil to recall the wartime practice of the dawn “stand to” and the comradeship the soldiers felt in the quiet, peaceful moments before dawn.
Unfortunately, the dawn service at Bowraville concentrated on the 100 year anniversary of Legacy.
Legacy is an excellent organisation and has provided immeasurable benefits and support to veteran
DEAR Jasminda,
MY husband Roger has offered to be the model for a local life art class so he'll have to strip off and have his dad bod on display for members of the local community.
What if someone we know is in the class?
Why would he do this?
Genevieve F.
Dear Genevieve,
Being a life model is an important role where artists create representations of the human form in all its glory - in this case the glory of Roger, his belly as ripe and malleable as a persimmon.
Herein lies the beauty of life drawing.
The life drawing scene embraces diversity.
Scars and birthmarks and voluptuous bodies are revered; they add interest and variety to an artist's repertoire.
As long as your husband has stamina, patience and confidence (and it appears he does since he has signed up to be a life model), he will no doubt make a great muse for the local community.
I wouldn't worry about someone recognising him.
People who take life drawing classes are interested in art, not the cheap thrill of seeing your Roger reclining on a bifold trestle.
How much do protestors know about native forestry?
DEAR News Of The Area,
HOW many of the Knitting Nannas really understand how forests grow?
Looking at a forest is a snapshot of the life cycle of that forest stand just as a snapshot of your family shows what the family looked like at a point in time.
left undisturbed they will continue to come back even if harvesting has occurred in the surrounding area.
How many Nannas have native hardwood timber in their homes such as frames, mouldings or furniture?
and ex-service personnel and their families.
It is not part of the Anzac tradition.
Legacy has a week in August/ September for its fundraising and celebrations.
It is of note that 2023 is the 50 year anniversary of the peace agreement ending the Vietnam War which is of great significance to approximately 60,000 Australians who served in this war. It would have been more appropriate to reflect on this anniversary.
As a veteran I was embarrassed by the focus on Legacy and I trust future dawn services at Bowraville follow the standard and long practiced ceremony.
Regards, Blew MANING, Vietnam Veteran.
Forests change over time, some trees get bigger, others die.
Fire can kill the whole stand but regeneration starts the cycle again.
Animal numbers also change as the forest changes.
Some animal numbers reach a maximum at certain stages of the stand's life and then can decrease to almost zero.
Animals like the koala prefer fresh growth and are common in areas logged some months earlier thriving on the new shoots.
Glossy black cockatoos are very specific on individual feed trees and if those trees are
If they were so antinative species harvesting, they should get rid of all this material as a real protest instead of trying to stop the next generation from appreciating the beauty of this timber.
If native species harvesting is stopped we will just import more hardwood timbers from countries where harvesting controls are non-existent or not effectively enforced.
All it will do is move the issue off-shore.
Nannas go and talk to your local foresters and ask to be shown different areas that have been harvested over time and the impact of that harvesting on animal populations.
Regards, Peter PAUNOVIC, Boambee East.
