Dialysis Patients Desperate For Local Services By Mitch Lees KIDNEY disease kills over 3 million Australians a year and the need for dialysis is increasing as our population ages with 7% of people over 65 needing treatment according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. This trend has prompted a group of local kidney dialysis patients to meet with Port Stephens MP Kate Washington, who has recently been appointed Shadow Minister for the Environment, Heritage, and Rural Health, to discuss the growing need for dialysis services on the Tomaree
Peninsula. Currently, residents needing dialysis have to travel to Newcastle two to three times a week with the treatment process taking over five hours per session. Ms Washington said that after meeting with patients in Port Stephens it was clear that it was time for local services to be made available. “The meeting with local dialysis patients confirmed to me that there is a desperate need for dialysis services on the Tomaree Peninsula,” said Ms Washigton. “For people who are dependent on dialysis this is an

essential health service, it keeps them alive, but the kilometres they are forced to travel to access the treatment is taking a toll.” Prior to the March State Election Ms Washington and NSW
Labor committed to expanding the services at Tomaree Community Hospital to include dialysis. The Liberal Government chose not to match the commitment and as a result there are no plans for dialysis at
the site. Ms Washington has sought a meeting with the NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard to discuss the desperate need for local dialysis services in Port Stephens. “I’ve asked the Health Minister for a meeting in the hope that
we can work together to see this desperately needed service delivered locally,” said Ms Washington. “There are many dialysis patients currently living in Port Stephens and these numbers are only likely to increase.”

other State when it comes to valuing and protecting our environment, and our children and grandchildren are going to bear the brunt.” “For a start, we need to reduce our reliance on single-use plastic because it’s clogging up our waterways
and poisoning our wildlife. We just can’t keep doing what we’re doing.” “We shouldn’t have a situation where people are forced to accept poorer health outcomes for themselves and their children because they live in the country.”

“When people living in rural NSW cannot access chemotherapy, dialysis or mental health services, the Premier’s slogan that ‘NSW can have it all’ is meaningless. “Before I entered Parliament, I practiced health law, so I know how important it is to ensure everyone can access the health services they need, regardless of where they live.” Ms Washington has identified her priorities as being amongst others, to focus on reducing single-use plastic, protecting koala habitats, and address ongoing inequities of access to health care for rural communities. Ms Washington was formerly the Shadow Minister for Early Childhood Education and Shadow Minister for the Hunter.

munity Day to full heights day was an important event that maintains that community connection. “RAAF Williamtown has a long association with the regional community, and our close relationship with community members, organisations and our Defence community partners is something we truly value,” GPCAPT Cluff said. “As proud members of the community, we were pleased to showcase the F-35A aircraft as a fifth-generation aircraft that is at the forefront of air combat technology. “The day also has highlighted the value of

of the project’s construction phase.” Group Captain Cluff acknowledged the ongoing support of the community that has been instrumental
to the successful delivery and sustainment of the project. “The opportunity to provide our friends and neighbours with an insight into the Air Force’s newest
capability, the F-35A aircraft and its supporting facility, is a great privilege,” he said. “While the new aircraft and infrastructure is clearly impressive – more importantly, the F-35A Community Day has allowed guests to meet the highly-trained, highly skilled professional Air Force personnel that maintain and fly the aircraft – without whom, none of this would be possible,” GPCAPT Cluff said. The F-35A delivers fifth-generation capability transforming the way the ADF operates in the modern battlespace. Its nextgeneration capability benefits include stealth, advanced sensors, data fusion and the ability to share information with other platforms be they air, land or sea-based.
A Night for Conor is a fundraiser which is being held to help out a young man who suffered horrific injuries as a result of a car accident. Conor’s life will never be the same, as he sustained a brain injury in the accident. Local iGym employee Marilyn is Conor’s Mother and she has had to give up a great deal to be with Conor who is currently in long term rehabilitation in Taree. Positive Behaviour Awards
By Marian SAMPSON
THE Positive Behaviour and Learning program has seen some amazing young people nominated within our community for their efforts. This week we saw Hunter River High’s Harry Dasilveira nominated for being an upstanding member of the school community, volunteering his time to welcome new students by showing them around. Alex Hall was Nominated for representing Irrawang High School as a selected instrumentalist in the Star Struck orchestra. Irrawang Public Schools Jesse Cottrell was spotted by a parent picking up rubbish in the street. Thank you for playing your part and keeping our environment clean Jesse! Asta Barratt has been nominated for her outstanding commitment and leadership when representing Raymond Terrace Public School at Star Struck this year. Asta was always ready to support students from other

schools and displayed total respect for her choir masters from other schools. Dylan Wood of Grahamstown Public School was nominated for his amazing sportsmanship skills. Over the weekend an under 8’s soccer team required some extra players and Dylan was quick to put his hand up after only finishing playing for his own team. Lilli Pride of Medowie Public School gained her nomination for displaying a kind and caring nature by looking after younger students during all of the Star Struck performances. Salt Ash’s Jake Holster found an expensive fitbit on the playground. He collected it and returned it to the teacher who ensured it was returned to its original owner. Addison Towers was nominated by a teacher from Raymond Terrace Public School for being absolutely delightful to her and her students at Star Struck. Her manners were
impeccable and is an asset to Salt Ash Public School. Karuah Public School’s River Barr consistently displays respect, responsibility and pride. She was nominated to receive this award for always being a great role model. River is often observed helping the younger children during sports carnivals, school events and in the community. MarketPlace Raymond Terrace are supportive of this wonderful program not only providing a venue for the weekly awards but also encouraging our youth to do well. Colleen Mulholland-Ruiz of MarketPlace Raymond Terrace told News Of The Area, “MarketPlace Raymond Terrace is proud that the PBL awards have become part of the community, and we love seeing our young people doing great things within our community and our own generation noting things and putting students forward for the award.”

Dear Jasminda,
Will a granny flat enhance or reduce my property’s value? THIS is a frequently asked question. A granny flat is a definite value enhancer, particularly as a softer form high density development. Whether your granny flat is attached to your home, or is a separate building is irrelevant, but for your and your guest’s privacy - and sanity - a separate entrance is essential. Ideally, it will also be fully self-contained which not only enhances long-term rental prospects, but allows greater flexibility of use. A well constructed, maintained and presented granny flat provides additional space for family/extended family/guests and is increasingly popular as a teenager’s retreat, It can also serve as a revenue earner via on-going or AirB&B accommodation. And if you decide that regular guests are not your ‘go’, the space offers an ideal home-office or studio. The possibilities are endless...so go for it, maximise your property’s potential and reap the benefits!” Hope this helps Denise
Port Rallyist Doing It For The Kids
By Mitch LEES
THE Starlight foundation helps sick kids forget their illnesses and re-discover the joy of childhood with a belief that fun fights fear and wins every time. Local Rotarian and ‘Trek 4 Kidz’ rallyist, Peter Page, is aiming to help Starlight in this quest by raising much needed funds to support those kids going through some of the toughest times of their lives. Mr Page will embark on the ‘Trek 4 Kidz’ rally at the end of August after completing it for the first time last year.

Our family is travelling to Tonga in September and I have a severe fear of flying. I’m contemplating not going because I’m worried I’ll be so stressed on the flight that I’ll want to get off. Do you have any suggestions? Mrs LG, Anna Bay Dear Mrs LG, YOUR fear is legitimate. Many people have phobias of some kind and being 30,000 feet in the air for an extended period of time with complete strangers is unnatural. Add in some turbulence, the constant warning flash of the ‘fasten your seatbelt’ sign, a screaming baby, and a passenger who has fallen asleep and is now dribbling on your shoulder and flying becomes a form of torture. Is your fear associated with a lack of control? You mention that you are worried you will want to get off. Let me assure you, Mrs LG, the flight attendants will not allow this to happen, even if they have to restrain you. It’s a heck of a long swim to Tonga. There are some natural strategies you can try. Deep breathing can be quite effective, though I imagine you’ve already got that one covered. White knuckling the seat in front of you won’t help you or the lady whose hair is now entwined in your fingers. Some people find a bit of alcohol helpful, but it could go one of two ways. You want to have your wits about you if something does go wrong (not that it will, Mrs LG, not that it will). You could perhaps listen to some music or a meditation podcast. Also, think of the end result. Imagine reclining in the sun, a cocktail in one hand and a book in the other. That’s surely worth the angst. If you are really petrified, you may need to consult your GP and get a referral to see a specialist. All the best with it. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

the lives of young girls through their martial arts journey. Investigative journalist Ms Jess Hill interviewed the female students as part of her new book and is currently working on the documentary said in a statement, “Watching these young women train in martial arts and talk openly about issues of consent, abuse and self-love was one of the most incredible things I did while writing my book.” Ms Hill’s recently published best-selling book, “See What You Made Me Do” deals with issues of violence against women. LASTING the distance is the theme for an upcoming a creative fundraiser in the area. From 7.30am on Saturday, 27 July until 7.30am on Sunday, 2 July the Imugi Taekwondo Club will run a continual sparring session with five representatives. The sparrers have taken a simple, if not exhausting, idea to their fundraising. For 24 hours the five martial artists will be available to spar members of the community. the world.” “Something that we strive to achieve for all our students.” “We just want to do our best in getting this message out to as many people as possible.” “Martial Arts is about as much about personal growth as it is about physical skills.” The documentary at the centre of the fundraiser follows the lives of young girls through their martial arts journey. It faces the truths, myths and misconceptions that exist around martial arts and most importantly the benefits for young women. This is an affordable fundraiser, with each round of sparring costing between $1 and $3 for each 3 minute timeslot. Mr Tony Gillespie from Imugi Taekwondo Club said, “We’d like to encourage all our Martial Arts friends and family from everywhere to come along and join in.” “No style barriers, or even experience required, everyone is welcome to just jump in and have some fun.” For more information go to https://www.facebook.com/ events/2043423849113077/
