Good Samaritan help with collections By Julie MCKIMM

GOOD Samaritan Ms Elaine Richards of Salt Ash has spent her entire life giving back to the community, and this year is no different.

Each year for the past few years Elaine has been collecting items from three local Anglican Churches, Holy Name in Mallabula, St Saviours in Williamtown, and St Francis in Medowie, to

donate to the Samaritans in Broadmeadow. Ms Richards told News Of The Area, “I’ve always done this kind of thing.”

Probus Club of Port Stephens Visits Blue Lagoon By Marian SAMPSON

GETTING out and about locally is one of the joys that Port Stephens Probus Club Members get out of life. Recently some 30 members of the Probus Club of Port Stephens enjoyed a very pleasant walk in bushland on our doorstep to visit the very pretty Blue Lagoon. There was no Brooke Shields or waterfall to be seen on the walk, but the local Blue Lagoon did not disappoint with lovely waterlilies and a sense of tranquility that fills the location, that belies the current environment of fires, drought and devastation. This was a very big turnout of walkers for the second last trek of the year. The Club’s Walking Group is extremely active, undertaking two walks a month led by Sylvia. Ann Gibson told News Of The Area, “The year is drawing to a close but not without a flurry of upcoming activities for the Club’s members. “The last barbeque of the year was held on a beautiful sunny day at Bagnalls Beach Reserve, bowls is still continuing and

Boost for Ports Little Athletics

Christmas Carnival 2019

q

By Marian SAMPSON

THE Little Athletics Centres in Port Stephens; Raymond Terrace and Port Stephens Little Athletics Centre at Tomaree, have received Grants totalling $7700 from Coles to buy brand new sports gear, thanks to funds raised through the sale of Coles’ Community Chiller Bags. The Port Stephens Little Athletics centres are among 316 centres across Australia to share in over $1.1 million in sports equipment Grants from Coles. Port Stephens Little Athletics’ President Bob Walkley told News Of The Area, “The $4100 Grant will make a big difference to this Centre, particularly their parent volunteers. “We’ll be able to buy a new tractor that will enable our volunteers to move equipment, particularly our high jump mats from storage to the track much more efficiently and effectively,” “This boost in funds will make a great difference to the local Little

The children of Medowie had an especially good time and were happy to tell News Of The Area about their fun. Three-year-old Frederick Montgomery said, “It was fun.” Adryane Montgomery, 9 years old told News Of The Area, “I loved singing on stage and going on the rides with my friends.” Eleanor Green, who danced in the Medowie Public School K-2 dance group said, “I enjoyed the singing and dancing.” Her friend, Amelia Rolfe said, “I enjoyed the rides and the fun time with friends.”

Athletics in Port Stephens. It is an investment in our kids and that is an investment in the future.” he said. Raymond Terrace Little Athletics’ President David Summerville hopes the $3500 injection form Coles will have a positive impact on athletes and volunteers alike. They plan to use the funds for a line marker, javelin trolley and electronic starting kit which will make the roles of volunteers less physically taxing. Coles State General Manager Ivan Slunjski said Coles was delighted to provide Grants to help the Little Athletics Centres in locations such as Raymond Terrace and Nelson Bay. “Thanks to our customers who have bought our range of chiller bags at Coles stores, we have provided nearly $25,000 in sports equipment Grants to Little Athletics Centres in the Port Hunter region and around $400,000 across New South Wales over the past 12 months to help kids lead healthier, happier lives.”

“The Raymond Terrace and Port Stephens Little Athletics Centres told us they would like to receive grants to buy a line marker, javelin trolley and tractor and we were delighted to help because we know these are an essential part of Little Athletics to support young budding athletes and parent volunteers,” he said. Funds for the grants are raised through the sale of specially-marked chiller bags designed by nine-year-old Lachie Macdonald from Victoria and 12-year-old Charlie De Bruyn from Western Australia. For every bag sold, 25 cents is directed to the Coles Little Athletics Community Fund to provide sport equipment grants. In addition to the chiller bags, Coles sells Community Bags which help to raise funds for SecondBite, Guide Dogs Australia and Clean Up Australia. All Community Bags were designed by school children as part of a bag design competition.

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. SEND your concerns to Jasminda care of media@newsofthearea.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb.

Dear Jasminda,

PROPERTY SETTLEMENT

“How much flexibility can I ask for in my settlement date?” I’M assuming you haven’t exchanged contracts yet. Once you have, then the settlement process is usually the last hurdle you’ll have to jump before the keys to your new property are in your hand. While you’re in the negotiation phase you’ll see that your Contract of Sale usually includes a clause clarifying the settlement as taking place 42 days (6 weeks) from exchange of Contracts. Settlement date must be mutually agreed so there is a certain amount of ‘wriggle room’ and if you state from the outset that you need more/ less time, then you have the opportunity to reach a mutually agreed outcome before everything is set in stone. It’s important to understand that once contracts have been exchanged, should you ask for an extension, the vendor has the right to refuse. Regardless of the settlement time frame, you should have your finances in order, including all fees and duties; undertaken all necessary due diligence on the property; taken out home insurance; booked in your power connection, telephone connection, conducted your pre-settlement inspection and kept your legal representative and Agent up to date on your position.

Incentive to Shop Locally ‘TIS the shopping season and this Christmas, Port Stephens Council is encouraging residents to keep their hardearned dollars in Port Stephens. Research undertaken by Council found that for every $100 spent at small businesses in Port Stephens, $60 stays in the local community. In comparison, for every $100 spent online, just $3.50 is estimated to stay in the local economy. Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says most people know shopping local is important but may not understand the huge impact it can have on a local economy. “Every time you spend money, you vote with your dollar. When you shop local, each dollar you spend is a vote for local business, local jobs and local people,” he said. “This Christmas, we’re working with local retailers

across Port Stephens to raise awareness about the value of shopping local.” “It doesn’t matter if you want to buy a surfboard, pushbike, a dinner for 2 or handmade homewares — it’s all available in Port Stephens,” he said. Retailers in Nelson Bay will host Twilight Shopping Nights on Thursday 12 and 19 December to make it even easier to shop local this Christmas. “It’s fantastic to see retailers from Nelson Bay joining forces to create a special experience for shoppers,” Mayor Palmer said. “There’ll be complimentary gift wrapping, entertainment and for every $20 spent in participating stores, you’ll go in the draw to win a $1000 shopping spree! “We’re committed to creating better places and better spaces across Port Stephens,

Josie Collard of Home Interior, Nelson Bay says shopping local has benefits for all. “When you shop local, it’s a different experience to what you get when you go to a shopping centre,” Ms Collard said. “We’re very personable, we really get to know our customers. I’ve always wanted our space to feel like a home, which is why we really want to treat our customers like family.” “We’ve built our business on being local. Dear Mrs JP,

GOSH, well I just had a bit of a look at traditional presents for an 18th wedding anniversary and it suggested gems to reflect the longevity and unbreakable nature of your marriage. Given that, maybe we should have a bit of a look at the qualities of a Toblerone that your husband has equated to this timeframe. For a start, 18 years is a mighty long time. To put it in perspective, people who commit manslaughter, intentional serious injury, culpable driving causing death, handling stolen goods, trafficking drugs and arson get in the vicinity of 15 to 20 years for their crimes, so living under the same roof for 18 years is very impressive (particularly if you haven’t committed any of the above misdemeanours). Now, back to the Toblerone. Was it the big Toblerone? Those things are pretty impressive. If it was, then I think you should maybe cut him a bit of slack. The Toblerone is reminiscent of Switzerland, which is quite romantic (until you realise it has been bought out by the Americans). Maybe your husband is associating you with the bear on the Toblerone’s mountain graphic which could mean you are cuddly or fierce or you need a wax. Let’s go with cuddly. Futher, Toberlones have many uses. You can turn them into a lovely chocolate mousse, make a delightful fondue (watch out for third-degree burns) or just hide in the bedroom and sob while watching ‘Love Actually’ and realising the Toblerone is the equivalent of that scene where Emma Thompson’s character Karen gets a Joni Mitchell CD for Christmas, thereby realising her cad husband didn’t buy the sparkly necklace for her, but his doeeyed secretary, Mia. Scoundrel. Alternatively, you could use the Toblerone to become an Instagram influencer. Did you know there is a movement of sad or bored (or both) women sporting what is referred to as the Toblerone Tunnel (similar to the thigh gap) – a trend to show off those with gaps wide enough to pass a Toblerone through. Seriously. I wonder what the reward is for such a feat? A Toblerone in the mouth, thereby reducing said thigh gap? What a weird old world. Look, just enjoy your chocolate (unless he’s already eaten it) and remember it is the thought that counts. Eighteen years? Hell. I’d be wanting a European ticket tucked into that wrapping (did you check?). Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Bob Royal Memorial Fishing Competition Murray Byfield on Stage mid January THE Bob Royal Memorial Fishing Competition, is a tribute to one of the Tilligerry Peninsula’s best known, but not overly successful fishers. Bob was a member of the Lions Club of Tilligerry Peninsula Inc. with vision and sought to have an event whereby children could go outside for a weekend - free from phones and computers. The competition started in 2015 with 30 children registering. With $1,000 raised this has grown every year with last year 82

8

registered fishers attracting participants from just about every locale in the Hunter Region. Joe Pfeifer told News Of The Area, “The response from the fishing fraternity exceeded our expectations, and the Board of Directors have decided that we should continue with the program given the absence of major events in the Port Stephens area at that time of the year.” “This year we are aiming to have over 100 children registered as well as raising over $6,000 for junior bodies,” he said.

NEWS OF THE AREA PORT STEPHENS

All profits from the event are directed to local organization’s within the Tilligerry Peninsula. In past years the Marine Rescue group and the Lions Centenary Children’s Park at Tanilba Bay benefited from these proceeds. Mr Pfeifer said, “In 2018 we decided that all future funds would go to designated junior sporting bodies in the Peninsula, resulting in us donating $4,000.00 in 2018 and $5,000 in 2019 between Mallabulla Junior Rugby League, Tilligerry Little Athletics, Tilligerry Football Club Tilligerry Drop-In Centre for Hope and Tilligerry Stingrays.” “This year in addition to

the five junior sporting bodies above we will also be donating to the Tilligerry Junior Tennis Club,” he said. The competition is scheduled for the weekend 11-12 January 2020. Businesses in the Tilligerry Peninsula have rallied behind this event for five years as well as businesses throughout Port Stephens, such as BCF, Tackle World, Terrace Boating, Imagine Cruises, Moonshadow Cruises and Port Stephens Toyota. Every child who enters the event will win a prize this year, thanks to our generous sponsors.

Innovative model recognised PORT Stephens Council’s innovative model for prioritising and managing weeds has been recognised at the Local Government NSW Excellence in the Environment Awards in Sydney last week. The Awards recognise outstanding achievements by local Government in managing and protecting the environment. Steve Peart, Council’s Strategy and Environment Section Manager, says it’s a great achievement.

“It’s great that our proactive approach to managing invasive species has been recognised as leading the way for other Councils,” Mr Peart said. “Once you start to learn why plants like African Olive, Chinese Violet and Giant Salvinia are considered a biosecurity risk, it’s alarming how often you’ll recognise them lurking in the local environment.” “We know that Councils have limited resources to fight the war on weeds. With 2700 introduced species to Australia,

there are always going to be more weeds than there are resources.” Mr Peart said, “That’s why our model ensures that efforts are focused on managing the most significant weeds while maximising efficiency. It helps us work out what time and resources we’ll need to make a real difference on the ground.” “This Award is a fantastic achievement for our Invasive Species team and will help Council continue its innovative work in fighting the war on weeds,” Mr Peart said.

Carols By The Bay By Marian SAMPSON

IT’s the celebration of the greatest story ever told. Of a woman, giving birth in a stable, an event that happened thousands of years ago. Yet so momentous is this story, that it is still celebrated around the world by billions of people every year. The birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.

q

It has been heralded in Carols throughout modern history. This year Christmas will be celebrated at Carols By The Bay in Nelson Bay at Fly Point on 15 December from 5.30pm. The event is delivered by the combined Churches on the Peninsula and this year it is being lead by Spectrum Church. Elly Webb the event organiser, of Carols by the Bay,

from Spectrum Church, told News Of The Area, “This is a family friendly event. You can bring your own hamper or enjoy the food from the stalls that will be setup on site; there will be a great variety of food.” Among the entertainment and activities available at the Carols are of course the fireworks at 9pm, performances by school

Wins for Martial Arts Club

By Heather SHARP

MEDOWIE local Imugi Taekwondo Club has shown once again they are a champion club. Six members participated in the 2019 Australian Martial Arts Championships National Titles. It was held in Port Macquarie across the weekend from 29 November to 1 December. The six Imugi members competed in their own age and belt divisions and they all also competed in the next division

above them. Chase Thoburn and Mia Gillespie won National titles in their age divisions and the next age group above. For 15 year old Mia that meant competing against 17 year olds and for Chase, he competed against the Open Men’s Black Belt division. Chase Thoburn told News Of The Area, “Winning the Open Men’s Black Belt Freestyle Sparring division was testament to my Instructors and their coaching on the day.” “As a teenager you look at their division and wonder how it might play out if you step up and now I’ve no doubt!” Mia Gillespie said, “I

achieved a personal best score in Forms. I’d worked incredibly hard and winning two National titles is reward for my persistence.” Mr Tony Gillespie, cooperator of the Imugi Club told News Of The Area the team performance was ‘exemplary’. “Not every decision went our way but the final results speak for themselves.” “We couldn’t be prouder of our students’ dedication to training and sportsmanship shown in competition.” Full results from the weekend included: 6 National Champions; 4 National Runners Up; three third places; and one fourth place.

Junior Squash Success By Julie MCKIMM

PLAYING in their last tournament of the year, junior members from Raymond Terrace Squash recently participated in the Roy Ollier Tournament in Port Macquarie. Twelve juniors headed north to take on players from across NSW in a weekend of great sportsmanship and squash, with some promising results. Edward Mayes won the Junior Novice division defeating fellow club mate Gui Sileirinha. D Division was won by Hayden Smith, and Jack came fifth in C Grade. Hayden told News Of The Area, “Port Macquarie is a great place to play, it was good to play new people.” “Next year I hope to hit the ball even better.”

This year has seen the club travel to five tournaments around the state, including Coffs Harbour, Parkes, Dural and Port Macquarie. The Club plans on traveling to the same tournaments next year. Eight year old Will told News Of The Area, “Apart from the pool, the best part of going to Port Macquarie was meeting and playing new and different people.” “Next year I want to start to boast (hit the ball off the side wall) more.” The juniors train at the Raymond Terrace Squash Centreon Tuesdays and plays on Thursday with new players always welcome. The Squash Centre is going strong and hopes with the success of the younger players to keep the sport alive in the region for many years to come.
