Lorraine Nicol Port Stephens’ New Freeman “I like doing By Marian SAMPSON
LORRAINE Nicol is not your Based in Port Stephens average lady. BAS agent 25829535 0422In070 333 fact she is small - she office@perpetualbookkeeping.com.au stands at just under 5 foot tall - but delivers big things for her community. Locally Lorraine is known as a pocket rocket. She has been active with a number of organisations over the years and was recently awarded Freeman of Port Stephens. Lorraine has worked tirelessly with organisations like Rotary, the Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Services, the VIEW Club and the Corlette Parks and Halls committee. Lorraine also assisted with the delivery of a recent event which raised funds for motor neuron disease. The newly named Freeman joked that it should be a Freewoman of Port Stephens because she has been free for a very long time.
Lorraine Nicol proudly told News Of The Area, “The VIEW Club has now eleven children whom they support. “I like doing things that make a difference,” she said. Lorraine also joked that she might be a “Freeman” but she still has to pay rates! She has plans to do more work on the Corlette Point Headland track and they are seeking some young volunteers to assist with the works. Lorraine remembers fondly taking a group of youths through Central Australia where she had to pitch her own tent. Lorraine is recognised locally as a fiesty hero. One who rolls up her sleeves and makes a difference wherever she can. Our community is richer for the efforts of those who volunteer and one thing is certain, Lorraine Nicol Freeman of Port Stephens has made a very big difference.

Councillor Jaimie Abbott told News Of The Area, “It’s such a privilege to be able to present these awards each year to talented Port Stephens women. “There was such a high calibre of candidates this year and it’s great to see so many applying for these scholarships. It’s exciting to see what these women will do with the money to better our community,” she said. I am sure there will be plenty of interest in watching the future of these women as they strive to meet their goals.

By Sandra MURRAY IT was the best possible outcome from a search operation conducted on the northern side of Nelson Bay on Sunday afternoon on the 8 March. Marine Rescue reported that crews from Marine Rescue Port Stephens and Marine Rescue Lemon Tree Passage were deployed to join local Marine Area Command, NSW Police Force and NSW Maritime to conduct a coordinated search operation after a small tinnie was found washed up on to Jimmys Beach. Police had been unable to contact the owner, whose vehicle and trailer had been left at the boat ramp. The search vessels were stood down after a Maritime officer located the boater, who had anchored the tinnie after it developed a mechanical problem and caught the ferry back to Shoal Bay. A new mobile phone had prevented attempts to contact him. The rescue crews returned to their bases, relieved that the search did not have a far more serious conclusion.

Gallery Takes A Walk On the Wildside By Marian SAMPSON
THE current Exhibition at Port Stephens Community Arts Centre celebrates the beauty and splendour of Australian flora and fauna. The artworks use a variety of media, inspired by artists’ passion for our native wildlife. Norm Littlefair is the Centre’s Feature Artist whose works will be on display until 24 March. A Western Australian, Norm is also an ANZAC who served in the Army in Malaya during the conflict in the late 50’s – 60’s. The Malayan Emergency was a guerrilla war fought between Commonwealth Armed Forces and the Malayan National Liberation Army (MNLA), the military arm of the Malayan Communist Party, from 1948 to 1960 in
Malaya. Australia’s commitment to the emergency lasted 13 years, between 1950 and 1963, with Army, Air Force and Naval units serving. The Malayan Emergency was the longest continuous military commitment in Australia’s history. He relocated to Nelson Bay around 2010 and immediately fell in love with the area and plans to live the rest of his days in the Bay. Norm started painting around 8 years ago and just wants to paint anything and everything he sees. Norm’s love of travel is depicted in his large art works. The Art Centre’s two Patchwork groups are sewing away to have their works finished for the opening of the March 2020 Quilt show.

Port Women Celebrate By Marian SAMPSON
INTERNATIONAL Women’s Day is celebrated around the world and here in Port Stephens there have been a variety of different activities to mark the occasion. The Rotary Club of Salamander Bay held its third annual International Women’s Day luncheon at Soldiers Point Bowling Club which was attended by over 150 women with a few men braving the day as well. The events Guest Speaker was Australia’s Rotarian of the Year and Member of the Rotary Club of Salamander Bay, Wendy Stein OAM. Wendy is involved in delivering life changing and life-saving programs in Papua New Guinea. The Save the Kula Babies program does just that. It helps save babies from abandonment by their families through offering family planning information and implants which allow mothers to plan around the size of their families. Wendy states, “The men are happy enough for the women to have the implants as long as it wont stop them from working.” In the Papua New Guinea society it is the women that do

much of the work. The theme of the 2020 International Women’s Day event was Each for Equal. Wendy is emphatic who our nearest neighbours and particularly the women in Papua New Guinea are not equal. While there are a multitude of political issues surrounding Papua New Guinea there are basic health ones: child mortality is high and so too are deaths in childbirth. Save the Kula Babies delivers safe birth kits so that women are not having their children born on a dirt floor. Often these women give birth in grass huts in the dark or by firelight. This is why we have International Women’s Day because unfortunately these women do not have what we have here and they deserve so

much more. Wendy has seen Mothers of 14 Pickaninny, the word for children in Papua New Guinea. For Wendy to continue her work she needs the support of the Australian community. Family planning, safe birth and education are a start but these women need so much more. Wendy Stein told News Of The Area, “We need a lot of help, these are our nearest neighbours and we are nowhere near equal, when ladies are having babies in the dirt, in grass unattended – losing their lives. “The biggest killers are childbirth, we lose five women per day in Papua New Guinea and it is needless. “Cervical cancer is the next biggest killer and we need help and money for a program to vaccinate against cervical cancer,” she said. Wendy is modest about her work and simply wants to see a better life for the women living on our doorstep. The event was MC’d by Rotarian and Tomaree Business Chamber President Leah Anderson. Leah said, “Our Club has been holding an event each year for the last 10 years to celebrate this very special day. International Women’s Day celebrates all women, in all their diversities. It is a celebration of those who came before us, those who stand beside us now, and those who will come after.

WITH almost 3 million disposable coffee cups ending up as litter or landfill each day in Australia, it’s time to look at the way in which businesses deliver the nation’s daily caffeine intake. Thanks to Plastic Free Port Stephens and Port Stephens Council, the region’s cafes may soon help change consumers habits with the rollout of the Green Caffeen reusable coffee cup system to stop the waste. According to Alicia Cameron, founder of Plastic Free Port Stephens, Green Caffeen is like the Swap’n’Go for coffee cups. “The Green Caffeen initiative is really simple. Customers can download the app, grab a cup of coffee at participating Cafes and simply scan and return the cup next time they’re in store,” said Mrs Cameron. “We’re hoping it helps to cut down on disposable coffee cups in Port Stephens and ensure a cleaner environment for generations to come.” The Green Caffeen system has seen over 500 Cafes Australia-wide sign up in its first year of operation with Port Macquarie-Hastings and the Central Coast LGAs helping small businesses transition to the system. o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from readers throughout the circulation area of our FOUR News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. SEND your concerns to Jasminda care of media@newsofthearea.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb. Dear Jasminda,
For three years my mother-in-law has been making our family a Sunday night vegetarian casserole and I’ve just found out she’s been using beef stock cubes all that time to give it a bit of flavour. I can’t believe she has done this, knowing I am a vegetarian.
INSURANCE MATTERS “My possessions are pretty minimal and inexpensive. Is it okay to have home insurance but not contents insurance? I BELIEVE everyone should be insured for every eventuality. And here’s why….your possessions might be “pretty minimal and inexpensive” but whether it’s a $5000 fridge or a $500 fridge that is damaged; your dog chews your lounge to bits (that’s happened to me), or your favourite guitar is lost or stolen, it will need replacing and that requires money. And damage can be caused by many things: natural disasters (on the rise in Australia) and these can include fires, floods, storms etc. Additionally, climate change increases risk and risk is a major factor insurers consider when insuring properties and this could well impact the insurable value of your home, leading to a property value reduction of 20% or more over the life of a standard mortgage. Consequently, if your house is lost, you may well have less money to rebuild, let alone refurnish. Further, your home insurance premium can rise as a result, so without contents insurance you could be losing on both counts! Insure your contents. Even if you never make a claim, you have the peace of mind to know you’re covered.
I hope this helps Denise

Dear Mrs KR,
OPINION
A different perspective Dear News Of The Area, MISS JS’s recent note to (News Of The Area’s) Jasminda, concerning her mother’s panic purchases was both timely and thought provoking. I regularly read Carpe Diem, Jasminda’s responses, albeit occasionally seemingly which are “tongue in cheek”. Just thought what I might say in the circumstances. Well if you were exposed to the Great Depression, JS just might rationalise her mum’s anxiety. But even if you weren’t, the gloom and doom architects of the Y2K bug caused mass panic in industry, which turned out to be a gigantic furphy. Indeed, someone with whom I’d haggled across the Industrial Relations table with for a long time and whom I’d come to believe did his homework and was not always wrong and whom I had not
heard from for nearly a decade rang me on the eve of the predicted Y2k bug catastrophe, to tell me to fill my bathtub with water, because there would be a critical shortage of water when the all the computer systems failed. With the benefit of hindsight, I filled my liquor cabinet instead. And got that one right. But JS, we are a resourceful lot and if you have ever been caught short in the bush, the duplicitous uses of a gum tree twig and leaves renders toilet paper redundant. I’d be more concerned if your mum was planting gum trees and building an outdoor dunny. FOOTNOTE: Miss JS, If mum starts purchasing mountains of candles and truckloads of firewood, then you will know that the climate change fantasy has kicked in also. Bob Macklinshaw Tea Gardens
Mrs KR, Corlette
THIS is a really tricky one. I’ve just done a bit of a mental calculation on the amount of time your mother-in-law has saved you by cooking Sunday night meals for three years and that is a pretty admirable effort. This could have been a completely innocent addition. I mean, do beef stock cubes even have beef in them? Maybe they are a bit like the humble frankfurt, or a piece of devon, or a crab stick. The sludge of ingredients that makes up these products could hardly be called food. Perhaps a beef stock cube actually is vegetarian. I’m going to put you out of your misery and have a look. Ok, Mrs KR. The great news is that beef stock cubes are largely made up of anything but beef. They have salt, wheat flour, maize starch, flavour enhancers, colour, yeast extract, vegetable oil, sugar, lactic acid, onion powder and mineral salt – I mean, how could one even begin to call something with those ingredients a beef anything? They sound positively vegetarian to me . . . oh, wait a minute – there’s something called beef extract in there as well. That could mean anything really. Let me see . . . Right, we have a problem. Beef extract is a bone, hide, skin, skeletal muscle, connective tissue combo. That’s not vego at all. In fact it is sounding very Silence of the Lambs. I have a feeling your mother-in-law has been slowly poisoning you. I can see her now, grinning as she brings the casserole to your door in an unassuming Tupperware container. Her ScoMo smirk when you say it smells absolutely delicious. Her coy wink when she tells you it’s the secret ingredient that makes it so special. You’re going to have to bring this to a head, I’m afraid, and tell her the game is up. There are only losers in this sad tale of subterfuge and Sunday night starvation. I feel you may never come back from this. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Ports Probus Clubs Active Calendars By Marian SAMPSON
THE Members of the Probus Club of Port Stephens have been having a busy time with social bowls where 18 would be champions were up for the challenge and the recent humidity vying their skills to get those bowls to kiss the jack! The club has also been enjoying a BBQ day which is very much a favourite activity which always sees good attendance. They met at Bagnalls Beach Reserve which is a perfect spot to park the BBQ trailer and set up the tables and chairs ready for some fun and friendship. Ann Gibson of the Probus Club of Port Stephens told News Of The Area, “The grass was very long after the rain and plenty of sticks that had to be removed beforehand. “President David Wilson even whipper snipped the area for members’ comfort; what a man!” she said. A team of master chefs soon had the steaks, sausages and

onions sizzling with a circle of mates supervising and solving the problems of the world. The ladies were happy to sit back and enjoy a wine and a chat. Coming up on the calendar is the Changeover lunch and more exciting activities filled with plenty
of friendship and fun. Ann encourages people to check out this very active and friendly Probus Social Club for retired and semi- retired couples and singles. She believes that there is something for everyone and lots of
Marine Rescue $450,000 replacement THE old Marine Rescue craft, LT 30, 24246, has well and truly weighed the anchor and now sits high and dry beside the base station on top of the hill in Whitbread Drive Lemon Tree Passage. It is soon to be shipped to a yacht broker in Sydney to be sold. The good news is that sitting in its cradle at the end of the jetty in the Passage is a $450,000 replacement. According to Commander Rick Tyler, the new aluminium rescue vessel greatly improves the response time, capability and

The new LT 30, 457141 ready for action at its compound in LTP. range of operation. “The updating of our vessel came about as part of a NSW Government initiative which saw a cash injection of some $36,000,000 to improve the efficiency of the service,” he said. “The money was to be spent in NSW so a manufacturer in Yamba was awarded the contract. This created local jobs,” he added. “Our contribution to the upgrade was set at $80 000. We are looking to get around $70,000 for our old craft and with fundraising activities and community support we hope to make up the shortfall,”
he said. In technical terms, the new boat has an aluminium hull as against the fibreglass one of the previous vessel; the twin Suzuki 250 hp. Engines increase by 25% the power of the craft and electronics improvements give out more accurate GPS and radar details. On top of this, more crew can be taken to sea for rescue missions and the craft can pick up a larger number of people in distress. Extra volunteers are needed to make Marine Rescue a more efficient service. Interested citizens cam make enquiries on 4982 4981.
WE’RE lucky here in Port Stephens to have so many incredible women doing incredible things. That’s why I’m proud to lead a council which values the contribution women make to our community through the Port Stephens International Women’s Day Scholarships. This year, we awarded 3 women $1000 scholarships to achieve a goal. Congratulations to our successful recipients, Grace Hewitt, Asha Larkin and Chontelle Grecian! International Women’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate women, raise awareness against bias and take action for equality. This year’s theme, Each for Equal, is a reminder that equality is not just a women’s issue — it’s up to all of us. Equality is good for business and communities, because a gender-equal world is happier, healthier and wealthier. So I challenge you to take a stand against bias, to reject stereotypes, and to broaden perspectives. There’s no doubt these are challenging times we’re living in. With the recent bushfire emergency and now the global Coronavirus outbreak, people are uncertain about the future and wary of travelling abroad. Thankfully, Port Stephens has been spared the worst of these challenges so far but our tourism industry and local businesses are still feeling the squeeze. That’s why I’m encouraging everyone to holiday here this year and spread the word about our beautiful place. From scenic walks along our stunning coastline, to delicious seafood and charming local towns, there’s so much to explore and do in Port Stephens. Head to portstephens.org.au and find out how you can get involved and help share the love for our local tourism operators and businesses. They are, after all, the people who keep this beautiful place ticking.

Edwards Easing Into Rugby Role By Mitch LEES
FOR Adam Edwards, rugby has not only been a lifelong passion but a pathway to realising some of his most cherished dreams. From boarding a plane in the Shaky Isles bound for Australia in 2007 as an 18 year old the versatile backrower rolled the dice for a chance to don the Gropers jersey in rugby paradise. Edwards quickly rose through the lower ranks to the top grade at the Nelson Bay Rugby Club where he made his mark as a powerhouse on the ball. “Those early days playing with the likes of Richie Gamble, Adam ‘Woody’ Wood and Grant ‘Goonie’ Vincent really developed my playing style,” said Edwards. “Watching Woody and Goonie attack the breakdown inspired me to really work on that area of my game.” Edwards took the helm as playercoach in 2017 and 2019 and was a part of the 2018 team that almost got to the last dance after years out of finals contention in the Newcastle & Hunter Rugby Union ( NHRU). Now, after lining up for the
Newcastle & Hunter Wildfires in their 22-15 victory over Illawarra in the Steel City Challenge, Edwards is keen to settle into his senior playing role and enjoy his time on the pitch. “It’s an old cliche but I’m really enjoying whatever opportunities are coming my way with rugby,” said Edwards. “It’s been an amazing rep season with the Wildfires and something I haven’t experienced for almost 17 years now. “Lining up with some great players from all the other NHRU clubs is really an honour.” Through all his achievements Edwards puts one milestone ahead of the rest and that’s settling with his young family on the Tomaree Peninsula. “I’ve had a magic time playing rugby in and around Port Stephens but the best thing that’s happened through it all is getting to raise our son Noah here with my partner Kailee,” said Edwards. “It’s a really special place, almost as good as Wanganui!” The Nelson Bay Gropers kick-start their 2020 season against Singleton at Rugby Park on Saturday, 28 March.
q Edwards all smiles looking forward to a strong 2020 season with the Gropers.
