Bid To Gain New National Park Land the protection of sensitive areas. Minister for the Environment, the Hon Member of Parliament Matt Kean told News Of The Area, “It is not just about the quantity of our National Parks, it is also about the quality of them. “In delivering additional National Parks we will also be able to identify and protect areas of koala habitat, that is something I am absolutely committed to doing.” “What I am doing, is writing to all Parliamentary colleagues and asking them to identify local areas that could be added to the National Park network. “I think that local MPs and Councils are best placed to identify opportunities to expand our National Park network and we will work with them, to deliver our commitment, to not only protect koalas, but to ensure that our National Parks remain the iconic

Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington told News Of The Area, “New National Park land has been announced encompassing 200,000 Hectares; as yet this announcement is unfunded, but I want to see this happen. I am keen to see both land at Fisherman’s Bay and Fame Cove brought into the protection of NSW National Parks and Wildlife. “At Fame Cove there is a repeat offender for land clearing… the fines are not a drop in the ocean for this owner and we cannot afford for people who are environmentally irresponsible to hold and own such beautiful unique and important land,” she said. Kathy Brown speaking for the Mambo Wanda Wetlands

Saving King Street Peace Picnic to Celebrate the Centenary of the End of World War I

Ms Kaye Newton from the Saving King Street group told News Of The Area, “In September 1919, Raymond Terrace held a peace picnic and this weekend’s event hopes to relive those times.” “We invite people to bring stories of this important event in Australian history.” Gathering at the site of the marriage trees, half way down King Street, people can dress like they did in 1919 or come as they are. The day is planned to be a simple gathering of residents and the Saving King Street organisers hope people will come out to enjoy the afternoon. Ms Newton said, “The Peace Picnic of 100 years ago was covered in the

had killed 6 387 people in NSW alone with 22,000 cases reported across the State. Ms Newton said, “Food from 100 years ago might be easier than you think.” “We will bring fruit cake and traditional shortbread to the Peace Picnic on 14 September.” “I will be happy to swap a piece or two for a fresh ham sandwich.” Raymond Terrace has a long association with World War I. Walk With Us goal to Save Lives
By Marian SAMPSON
WALK With Us is the annual event delivered by Port Stephens Suicide Prevention Network (PSSPN). The group raises awareness and educates around how to help someone considering suicide. Their goal is to save lives. One of their initiatives
is to create awareness and acceptance of those who have considered suicide. Walk With Us is an annual event held at the Solace Garden at Boat Harbour. Suicide is hard to quantify. How many single vehicle road accidents are accidents and how many are suicides? We many never know. What we do know is that

we need to support those dealing with hard times. That knowing how to offer support is important. Knowing when to offer support can be life changing. Surprisingly according to NSW Heath Statistics found at http://www.healthstats.nsw. gov.au/Indicator/men_suihos/ men_suihos_lga_trend women in Port Stephens are at greater risk of suicide than men.
q Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington addressing the 2018 Walk With Us participants.
The PSSPN is engaged with the community helping individuals to reach out in times of need. Michael Murray of the PSSPN told News Of The Area, “We welcome everyone in our community to walk with us whether they have been touched by suicide or not. “For those that have been affected by Suicide it is heartening
to see the wider community recognise the impact that it has on the lives of those left behind,” he said. PSSPN’s annual ‘Walk With Us’ day will be conducted on Saturday, September 14, at Solace Place in Boat Harbour’s Iluka Reserve from 9am. The event, which will coincide with World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10, is open to the public and
will feature guest speakers, a barbecue and live music. Also on the invitation list are the countless men and women who have served on the PSSPN committee, including past presidents, founding members and volunteers. The community is being asked to Walk With Us to recognise the impact of suicide in the community.

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from readers throughout the circulation area of our FOUR News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. SEND your concerns to Jasminda care of media@newsofthearea.com. au and include your title, initials and suburb. Dear Jasminda,
We are due to have a baby in November, and we really want a name that people can’t change to a nickname. Any suggestions?
RENOVATE OR DETONATE
Mr OS, Raymond Terrace
“I love where I live, but my house no longer fits my needs. Is it better to renovate or rebuild? YOU love your area, but not your house. That’s not unusual. Needs change. Unless your house takes ‘renovator’s delight’ to new depths, especially if there’s structural damage, at first glance renovation would appear to be the default position. Demolishing and rebuilding however is not without its perils. Firstly, find out whether you’re permitted to demolish in your area. If so, then compare your renovating versus rebuilding costs; the timeline and your living arrangements for both. If you rebuild, you’re obviously going to need somewhere to live. And if you have a mortgage, it’s smart to keep your lender appraised of your plans. Reducing a large part of your lender’s security to rubble – without their knowledge – may not go well for you. Plus, your lender is the best placed party to develop a loan product that better matches your current and future needs. There are so many factors at play here and all can be highly emotive: Council approval, your neighbours, budget, time-frame, lifestyle, emotions and return on investment. Research thoroughly, consult professionals and you have all the necessary tools to make an informed decision.

Park Site For Launch
By Heather SHARP
A PUBLIC launch of the very successful school based Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) Program will take place this Friday, 20 September at Boomerang Park and Lakeside Skatepark from 3.30-5.00pm. The PBL Program has had such a positive influence on local schools that those involved want to extend it into the community. The signs that will be displayed at Boomerang Park have been sponsored by Councillor Giacomo Arnott. The signs will outline the PBL values so that all that use the facilities will be able to read them. Hunter Valley Buses is also supporting this initiative and will have two PBL matrixes on each bus with the PBL expectations outlined. Those attending the launch will be able to see the bus for themselves.
Raymond Terrace Community PBL Team Leader and teacher at Irrawang Public School, Ms Merri Brady said to News Of The Area, “PBL assists children in understanding what is expected in every setting.” “Each school develops a continuum of support across the tiers that promotes student wellbeing within a school culture strongly focused on learning.” “All children and young people receive universal support and instruction.” “If students need more support, their program becomes more intensive and individualised to target their specific learning needs.” Raymond Terrace Community Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a joint initiative between the two high schools: Hunter River and Irrawang; and the seven public primary schools: Raymond Terrace, Grahamstown, Seaham,
Karuah, Medowie, Salt Ash, and Irrawang. It started in 2015. There are in excess of 3000 students enrolled in the nine schools and PBL is used to support the students, their families, staff, and community members’ social and emotional wellbeing. Schools are working together with parents, businesses, service providers as well as local, state and federal government representatives to encourage expected behaviour outside of school by using PBL. The schools are all focussing and acknowledging the positive contributions that local young people are making, rather than narrowing in on the negative. Friday’s launch will have guest speakers and the community can learn more about the benefits of belonging to the PBL community. Everyone in the community is invited to attend.
NAMING a baby is fraught. All babies are adorable, but what you name your little bundle of joy may not suit them when they are a six-foot-tall, hirsute rugby player, so go for a name they can grow into. All of us end up with nicknames at some point and these may or may not be derivative of what is on our birth certificate. I get Jazzy or Jazz. Since my surname is Featherlight, I also get Heavy in that weird way Australians have of naming things their opposite. Some nicknames come from something we are well known for, or perhaps a striking feature, or a personality trait. A lot of nicknames are just surnames with ‘y’ added to the end, which is okay if your last name is Brown or Finn or Jones, but a bit fraught if your strapping lad has the surname Fann or Loop or Fair. Another fun game kids enjoy is to swap the first letter of first names and surnames, a pastime that caused many sleepless nights for poor little Freddy Tuck. Let’s use politicians as a case in point for nicknames. For shortened name versions we need look no further than ScoMo and BoJo. Trump has more nicknames than policies and these are a mix of his perceived actions and his unfortunate looks: Fake President, Traitor Trump, Cheatin’ Donald, Agent Orange, Little Hands, President Spanky, and on it goes. Tony Abbott was nicknamed The Mad Monk, for his early priestly aspirations and growing bald patch. Barnaby Joyce was nicknamed The Beetrooter due to his ruddy complexion and for taking office public relations a step too far. Be very careful to look at the match between first and second names. Something not considered by the parents of E.C. Lay, O. Men and Y. Nott. Apparently the guardians of Elle Vator, Etta Lott, Sarah Tonin and Richard Face didn’t give it a lot of thought either.
Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Community Grant Win Applications Open 13

Port Stephens Community Grant Applications are Open for 2019
By Mitch LEES
THAT’S why last month, I was proud to be part of a defining moment for Port Stephens. After an extensive community consultation process, Council voted to fast-track $15.9 million worth of projects identified as priorities by our community. What that means is almost $5 million for footpaths, $2 million for roads and $2.4 million for town centre revitalisation. We’ve also committed $3.2 million for sporting facilities and $450,000 for public amenities across Port Stephens. On top of that, there are many projects which are must-haves for our community, like works to improve drainage and coastal erosion — works that just need to get done. I want to thank everyone who participated in the community consultation process — hundreds of people had their say both in person and online. We heard your feedback and we’ll be delivering these important projects as a priority for our community. One of the projects that has been many years in the making and about 2 years to get over the line is the 7 Day Makeover at Anna Bay. I want to particularly thank Deputy Mayor Sarah Smith for her continued advocacy for the community of Anna Bay. Council is leading the way on town centre revitalisation with this project, and it’s great to see the community jumping on the wave of excitement! With the total infrastructure spend now at a record $49 million for 2020 on projects born out of the community, it’s an exciting time for Port Stephens.

One of the things that really motivates me as Mayor of Port Stephens is delivering much-needed projects for our community
IN 2018 Port Stephen’s not-forprofit community groups took full advantage of the NSW State Government’s Community Building Program successfully applying for over $260,000 in Grants. The Berejiklian coalition has again dusted off their wallet for 2019 and Port Stephens MP Kate Washington is urging local community groups to take full advantage of the funds on offer to build or renovate community spaces and purchase much needed equipment. “This Grant program is a great opportunity for local groups to get funding for important community projects,” said Ms Washington. “I encourage Sporting Clubs, P&Cs, Residents Groups, Environment groups and others to apply for funding and bring their locally minded ideas to life.” Applications opened on Monday 2 September and will close on Friday 27 September.
Some of last year’s recipients included Medowie Community, Preschool, Salamander Bay Rotary Created: & Public B Foley Club and Shoal A Bay School Creator No: 12395 P&C.
