Some find renewed vigour for old hobbies, like gardening or crafts, both things we could do on our own and in our own homes. But what if that’s not enough? Over the years around 125,000 retirees have taken to Probus Clubs with absolute gusto, and have been spending much of their retirement time simply socialising and having fun with friends. Ann Gibson told News Of The Area, “They’re always happy to tell you how much Probus has brightened their lives and rekindled their zest for fun and friendship in retirement, and they’re equally happy to welcome new members into their Clubs.” You’ll find Probus Clubs are a mix of socialising, morning teas or lunches and a monthly meeting with interesting guest speakers, and both small and large group activities arranged by fellow Club members. Probus Clubs have a great choice of activities every month, whether
it is day trips, playing cards, crafting, dining out or helping arrange even more activities for your friends. But it’s not just about your own social life of course, it’s also about what you as a member can add to others’ lives. Your participation as a Probian is an important part of someone else’s social activities, and as you make more friends, your circle of social influence gets wider and wider, meaning more of your fellow Members look forward to seeing you and doing something together. Probus members become a part of their lives just as much as they do yours, and it’s this bond of friendship that has seen Probus become the major social group it is. “We all look forward to seeing our friends, but how nice is it to realise that they look forward to seeing us just as much?” she said. You can find out more about
Probus by calling (Australia) 1300 630 488 or Visit www. probussouthpacific.org to find out where your nearest Probus Club is. The Port Stephens area has a variety of Probus Clubs to suit your preference for men or women only and mixed gender

News Of The Area spoke with Ms Meryl Swanson, Member for Paterson about the week. She said “In my address to students I pointed out that it is vital for students to have a voice in the school and in our community.” “Our young people are our future and giving them the skills to share their feelings, opinions and ideas
is an important component of schooling.”” “We all want to be heard and having the skills to effectively communicate our needs and ideas is a vital life skill.” “I also expressed my opinion that ‘voice’ can mean many things.” “It may mean different forms of expression not necessarily just talking.” “It can be writing, dance drama, drawing, painting, designing, storytelling, public speaking and it may be in different forums such as talking to a friend in the playground, being part of a debating team, taking part in a yarning

Dance Festival Talent
By Heather SHARP
WIRREANDA Public School has showcased their talents at the Hunter Schools Dance Festival. Held at NEX (Newcastle Exhibition Centre) or for locals, known as the Old Workers’ Club, two dance groups performed. The Junior Dance Group (for students in Years 2 and 3) performed a tribute to The Lion King in celebration of the 25 year anniversary of the original film’s release. The Primary Dance Group (for students in Years 4, 5, and 6) performed a tribute to the 50 year anniversary of the first landing on the moon. The two teachers responsible for the dance
groups, Miss Hannah Brown (Juniors) and Miss Corynne Darcy (Primary) worked tirelessly with their young dancers in the lead up to the Festival. The Hunter Dance Festival runs over four evenings and hosts more than 100 public primary and high schools from the Hunter Region. News Of The Area caught up with Miss Corynne Darcy to ask about the Wirreanda dance groups. She said, “Both groups started training a couple of lunch times a week from March.” “We teach the choreography and all the formations.” “We choose the theme and then select and order all of the costumes.” “This year I even roped
my Father into making the American Flag prop and our P&C President made all of the primary dance group’s star headpieces.” Teachers are already busy, so why do they take the extra time out of their day to assist with school dance, News Of The Area asked Miss Darcy. She said, “We do all this extra work to prepare form the Hunter Dance Festival because we love seeing the excitement and happiness it brings our students.” “Many have never danced on a professional stage with lighting and sound before.” “Many families cannot afford outside-of-school dance classes.” “I have found that events like these are the things the kids will remember forever.”
“They never forget the experience.” “I myself performed 30 years ago at the Hunter Dance Festival as a student with Irrawang High School.” “Students gain performance skills, confidence, teamwork skills, co-ordination and incredible memories.” “Our Primary group also got to participate in a dance masterclass with a professional hip hop choreographer from Sydney.” The Wirreanda dance group also performed during Education Week, and will perform at the School Fete and later in the year at the Medowie Christmas Carnival.

Positive Behaviour for Learning Awards
By Heather SHARP
THE POSITIVE Behaviour for Learning (PBL) Awards were extra special this week, taking place on Thursday evening during Education Week. As usual, students were recognised across the nine participating schools for exemplary actions in school or for their school community. Ms Kath Henry, a teacher and currently relieving Principal at Karuah Public School presented the Awards to the deserving students. Speaking to MarketPlace, Ms Henry, who has been at Karuah Public School for 23 years, said, “Teaching is fantastic, as it is rewarding to see students improve academically, socially and to connect with students to make the world a better place.” “Education empowers minds and leads to making good thoughts and clever ideas. Education also is the only treasure that cannot be taken away from you.” “It has assisted the community members to become involved in looking for positive behaviour in
the community rather than focusing on the negative.” “As a school community, we feel a high level of satisfaction when we ring a parent to tell them about their child receiving a Community PBL Award.” This week’s Award recipients were: Matthew Hughes, Hunter River High: Nominated for his display of sportsmanship during the 2019 Nations of Origin Rugby League competition. Hayley Maslen, Grahamstown Public School: For demonstrating great leadership skills during Plant A Tree Day activities. Isabelle Lewis, Karuah Public School: For cutting off her beautiful long hair and donating it for cancer. Isabelle is not only a generous community member, she is always displaying respect, responsibility and pride everywhere she goes. Marley Lucas, Raymond Terrace Public School: For acting responsibly remaining safe and showing respect when representing the school at the Hunter Dance Festival. Lilly Vella, Seaham Public School: Lilly is an outstanding

Ella Metcalf, Medowie Public School: Nominated by a community member for
assisting their friend who fell and hurt themselves during dance lessons at the community hall. Kobey Raisbeck-Pollard, Irrawang Public School: For volunteering to play on another Under 8’s soccer team after playing his own game. Showing great sportsmanship. PERMACULTURE
“I’m looking to move to an area that is suitable for engaging in a self-sustainable lifestyle and a friend suggested permaculture. Is the Hunter suitable as a region where permaculture could be viable?” THERE’S a growing trend to push back against the frenetic pace of today’s life, especially the prevalence of chemicals and modifications to our food and the way we treat our environment in general. Permaculture does just that. With climate change and environmental degradation at the forefront of global conversations, surely working with nature, rather than against it can’t be a bad thing! The Hunter/Mid-North Coast is not just a beautiful part of the world, it’s ideal for permaculture and we’ve seen a region-wide increase in the practice of this philosophy. Several years ago, I sold an acre property in Stroud Road to a couple passionate about creating an environmentally friendly lifestyle. Brett and Nici Cooper have established Limestone Permaculture, a spectacular example of this philosophy. Have a look at their website and maybe visit their demonstration property. They’re keen to share their knowledge and experience. They also run courses and workshops. There is also a Hunter Permaculture Group numerous other similarly principled organisations. And when you’ve decided the time is right to find your perfect property – the Team at R&R Property is here to help. We have a tree change guide to help you get started. Hope this helps. Denise

I have a friend who volume dates. She thinks that by doing this she has more of a chance of meeting her soul mate, but is she really able to get to know people properly when there’s a handful of them? Is she giving them a fair chance? Is she being true to herself or to them?
Vietnam Veterans Day Zealand soldiers at Long Tan became legendary. That single engagement on just one afternoon in August 1966 has come to symbolise Australia’s ten-year-long involvement in our nation’s longest war. Since 1987, when Prime Minister Bob Hawke declared 18 August “Vietnam Veterans Day”, the anniversary has commemorated all Australians who took part in the conflict.
OPINION Dear News Of The Area
THE battle of Long Tan occurred on the afternoon of 18 August 1966, just two months after the 1st Australian Force (1ATF) established its base at Nui Dat in the heart of Phuoc Tuy province, South Vietnam. The bravery, tenacity and sacrifice of Australian and New

IN a former life I was a training and employment consultant. I trained people in job seeking activities. One of the things I stressed was that you have to apply for multiple jobs at the same time. In this way, even though you may not land your dream job straight away, or ever, you could pick up a survival job, an interim job, or a job that paid for Oysters Kilpatrick once a month. You could also gain invaluable skills or insights or even develop certain personal qualities, so those jobs were not a waste of time, but part of a sometimes steep learning curve. Now it would be somewhat tacky to apply this method to dating because your friend is perhaps not only collecting new skills, but venereal diseases and a reputation as a bit of a cad or a bounder (or whatever the female equivalent of these terms is. Cadette? Bounderess?). I guess with online dating, there is danger that though the smorgasbord on offer can be appealing at first, what are the long-term repercussions? Remember Sizzler restaurants? There’s still a couple of them around (please bear with me, Ms KP). On arrival at Sizzler, there was always a queue and a sense of anticipation as you caught a glimpse of mountains of seafood, stir fries, exotic salads, the irresistible aroma of bread and then bowls of enticing desserts - trifles and ice-cream, sauces oozing from dispensers, nuts and marshmallows. You name it, it was there. The first few mouthfuls of this buffet were truly intoxicating. It was hard to choose with so much on offer, so you ended up taking a bit of everything, just in case you missed out, but ultimately this gluttony resulted in a sense of being full, yet unfulfilled. Do you see where I’m going with this, Mrs KP? It’s hard to give your whole heart to chicken stir-fry when you have to leave room for crumbed prawns, Caesar salad, potato salad and chocolate mousse. Food for thought. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Winter Fellowship “Of course we were warmed by steaks and sausages and good company!” she said. The Probus Club of Fingal Bay meets on the second Monday of each month at 9.30am at the Fingal Bay Sports and Recreation Club, 100 Rocky Point Road, Fingal Bay. Probus offers fellowship for those who are retired and semi retired, giving connections to the community.
WINTER is the time to rug up, and while many of us focus on staying warm and enjoying homemade soup and comfort meals, the members of Fingal Bay Probus Club were still out and about getting active. Given the weather, it is not surprising that the Club members chose some undercover activities: movies and morning teas, a book lovers’ meeting and a lunchtime gathering. On another occasion, some Club members ventured onto Ross Jennings patio backed by the Tomaree National Park, for their regular ritual of wine tasting. Julia Redlich told News Of The Area, “On another day, it was time to rug-up to cope with the chilly winds at a barbecue.” q Fingal Bay Probus Club’s No one can really Trish McClung, Margaret resist a good Australian Marlin, and Jenny Wright barbeque, even in 17601 enjoying a Probus BBQ. winter. EVEN at this time of year, it’s wonderful to be able to get outside in the sunshine and enjoy the many parks, playgrounds and sports fields that Port Stephens has to offer. I’m pleased to say that soon we’ll have even better quality facilities for all to enjoy. During the winter, we’ve been busy delivering on a number of key projects funded through the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities grants. These grants have allowed us to carry out thousands of dollars of work across Port Stephens that would otherwise not have been possible. Bagnalls Beach Reserve in Corlette has a new playground, picnic tables and bubbler for the whole family to enjoy. Out at the Bay we’ve almost finished work on new pathways and lighting in Apex Park, after completing the grassed amphitheatre late last year. This is all part of our plan to revitalise this important community asset. In Raymond Terrace, we’re making Boomerang Park even more accessible with a new shared path for walkers, runners, skaters and bikes. Meanwhile, at King Park Sports Complex, we’re about to start work on one of three new all-access amenities. Spectators at Bowthorne Oval in Wallalong will have a place to watch the football and cricket with the upgrade to seating almost complete, while we’re giving the playing fields at Yulong Oval in Medowie some TLC. These projects would not be possible without the funding and support of the NSW Government, and the hard work of Council staff in applying for grants. This is just one way that we’re continuing to deliver more for our community. To learn more about these projects and more, visit portstephens.nsw.gov.au/projects
SCOUT, Jade Keher (aged 17) recently had the wonderful experience of attending the 24th World Scout Jamboree. The Jamboree held between 22 July and 2 August saw tens of thousands of teenage Scouts from over 150 countries converge on the US State of West Virginia. Jade was one of 687 Australian Scouts who attended the 10 day event. Prior to her International travels, Jade was invited to Sydney to conduct the investiture of the new NSW Governor, Ms Margaret Beazley, AO, QC. On 11 July the investiture took place and Ms Beazley is now the Chief Scout of NSW. Her husband, Mr Dennis Wilson, was made an honorary Scout at the same ceremony. Jade, told News Of The Area, “I was invited to go as one of two members from each Scouts’ group—Joeys, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers, Rovers—selected to participate” “I was really nervous.” “We did rehearsals

Neil Diamond, The Man ‘Thommo’ at the Bowlo The Music
THE one thing Craig ‘Thommo’ Thomson loves to do is entertain and using Acoustic and Electric guitars with the great assistance of modern looping, well let’s just say, everyone is in for a musical treat whether it be in a Club, Hotel or function. Now here is a little bit of history: Former Home and Away star playing Marty in the popular TV soap, Craig
knew entertaining was in his blood both musically and through the Nation’s TV screens. Moving to the UK, Craig kicked off his music career extensively touring on an 18 month’s Home and Away Musical throughout the UK, fitting in TV appearances on the likes of Good Morning Britain and Motormouth. Craig’s own music career
enjoyed early success with his single ‘I want you to want me’, performing and touring with members of UK legends Frankie Goes To Hollywood. For more info just click the Bio button below. You can see Craig Thomson at Nelson Bay Bowling Club this Saturday at 6:45pm.

‘NEIL DIAMOND, The Man The Music’ is on at the Tea Gardens Country Club this Saturday 17 August 2019 at 7.30pm. Certainly not one to miss. You all know the hits – Cracklin’ Rosie, Cherry Cherry, Song Sung Blue, Red Red Wine and many others. Neil Diamond has been loved by millions since he first burst onto the music scene with Solitary Man back in 1966. And now you have the opportunity to hear his story. ‘Neil Diamond – The Man, The Music’ is a tribute to the man himself presented by multi award winning singer/ songwriter and entertainer Craig Stewart. The show has been in development over several years, with audiences universally claiming “You close your eyes, and you’d swear you were listening to Neil himself”. Craig has now taken the show to a new level. Through the use of multiple projections, synchronised lighting, excerpts of interviews and of course the music itself ‘Neil Diamond – The Man, The Music’ follows the Neil Diamond story, from humble beginnings as a struggling young songwriter and notoriously nervous live performer through to
q Craig Stewart: ‘Neil Diamond, The Man The Music’. worldwide recognition as a genuine musical superstar. Multiple Award winning singer/songwriter Craig Stewart, the show’s creator, was once described in a national music magazine as ‘one of the most listenable singers to emerge this century’.
Please support the advertisers within the News Of The Area as they are bringing you your local news.
The article went on to say audiences will ‘be left wanting to hear more and more of this great entertainer’. With around two hours of Neil’s biggest hits on offer, this is one show that fans of both Neil Diamond and Craig Stewart are sure to be raving about!
