Meryl takes the shot FEDERAL Member for Paterson, Meryl Swanson has already taken the flu shot and is pressing people to do the same. With the 2020 flu season not far away, the community is urged — and especially those in vulnerable groups or age brackets— to arrange vaccination against seasonal influenza.
Ms Swanson said, “It’s super important for people to have their flu shot at this time of the year.” Whilst flu vaccination does not prevent against COVID-19, a flu vaccination is critical to protecting the general health of people from influenza. The National Immunisation Program provides free vaccines to those most at risk, including: • Pregnant women at any stage of

pregnancy; All Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged six months and older; People aged 65 years and older; People aged six months and older with certain medical risk factors; and For the first time, all children aged between six months
and five years. Receiving a vaccination from April provides optimal protection in the peak period of influenza circulation, usually from June to September in most parts of Australia. This year it is even more important to be vigilant about the flu because of the COVID-19 pandemic. While there is not yet a vaccine or effective treatment for COVID-19, vaccination provides an effective defence
against the flu. Vaccinating against the flu will reduce the risk of a very dangerous double-up of flu and coronavirus— both diseases affecting the respiratory system. Vaccinated people of all ages are less likely to get the flu and if they do, are less likely to have a severe case. Fewer cases and fewer severe cases of flu will result in less demand on our health care system. The actions that we
take to slow the spread of COVID-19 can also stop the spread of influenza and other viruses. Every one of us has a responsibility to contribute to this effort by: • Practising good hygiene • Practising social distancing • Following the Government’s directions on public gatherings and workplaces, and • Understanding how and when to self-isolate. More information on the flu is available at https://www.health.gov.au/healthtopics/immunisation/immunisationservices/flu-influenza-immunisationservice.

JUST because there is a pandemic doesn’t mean that the winter season won’t see more call outs for the local Fire and Rescue Crews, however it will change the way they interact with the public. Dennis Peters, Captain of Fire and Rescue NSW, Raymond Terrace told News Of The Area, “As a result of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, your local Fire and Rescue crew will be interacting with the community a bit differently for the time being. “We have cancelled all community engagements including schools and childcare centre visits, as well as our home fire safety visits. “We will also not be allowing entry to our Station or truck of anyone but essential personnel.” The good news is that the crews will still be there to keep us safe if there is a fire.

to continue responding to emergencies in our area and looking after the community. “We will be stepping up cleaning and disinfecting our Station and appliances, but otherwise it is business as usual for us in protecting the community,” he said.

Council hold meetings online PORT Stephens Council will hold its Ordinary Council meeting via video conference for the first time in an effort to protect the Mayor, Councillors, staff and the community from COVID-19 (coronavirus). Mayor Ryan Palmer says the move to hold Council meetings online is in line with the current restrictions on public gatherings by the Department of Health and advice from the Office of Local Government. “Through technology, we will continue to deliver our usual services and provide the community with access to Council meetings,” Mayor Palmer said. “Moving meetings online also allows Council to adhere to Government measures in place preventing public gatherings
to help stop the spread of COVID-19 while ensuring we continue to deliver our usual services for our community. “This is a first for Port Stephens: we are living in unprecedented times and the health and wellbeing of all people should be everyone’s priority at this time,” he added. Help at Hand By Marian SAMPSON IT is a sad fact but whenever a crisis of any kind happens, be it drought, bushfires, floods, cyclones and yes pandemics we see shifts in behaviour. It normally brings out the best in all of us, not just Australians but around the world. Here, we pride ourselves on mateship, on lending a helping hand; we support and nurture each other, help where we can and look out for our friends and neighbors. There is a portion of the population that will use a crisis like this to exercise or strengthen the coercive power and control they have over others that feeds their personality disorder. These are the perpetrators of family and domestic violence. We all know that even in normal times, the most dangerous time for any victim of abuse or violence occurs when that person gains enough strength to break the chain … to leave the relationship. Unfortunately, in a crisis, perpetrators are handed a
perfect excuse to escalate their behavior. In a pandemic crisis like this, victims have no choice. They can’t go anywhere! They can’t leave. Abusers can keep their victims at home, under control, living in fear. Fear for themselves, their children, their safety, their health too. Roger Yeo, White Ribbon Ambassador told News Of The Area, “Often victims have no

money, and nowhere to run. During the COVID-19 pandemic the health, safety and financial services they need, is curtailed in favour of services needed by the wider community to fight the pandemic. “There have already been reports of an escalation in domestic and family violence by as much as 50% over a month ago. “This will certainly get worse.
“We know that perpetrators of domestic and family abuse weaponize isolation, coercion and surveillance all the time. “I have even heard anecdotes of perpetrators bringing friends home and then claiming they have COVID-19 after they’ve left. “They’re using the Coronavirus as a weapon … “I have it” … “my friend who was just here has it.” Roger urges everyone in the community to watch out for your friends and neighbours, and listen. If you think this abuse is going on, report it. Call the Police. They’re trained and empowered to help. You don’t have to put yourself in danger. “If you are experiencing abuse, or know someone who is, call 1 800 RESPECT,” he said. Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington told News Of The Area,
“Many local families will struggle through this crisis, and awfully, that means some families will face added dangers because of domestic and family violence. “It’s hard to imagine what it must be like being told to stay home when your own home isn’t safe. “So local Police have been provided with additional powers to protect victims, including strengthened Apprehended Domestic Violence Orders. “The Yacaaba Centre and PSFANS, the local domestic violence support services, have had to change the way they operate during this crisis but are still doing a wonderful job supporting those who need help,” she said. Ms Washington believes it is vital for those living in a violent situation that they know there’s help if they need it.

White Nissan Navara in Nelson Bay last Sunday AN investigation is underway after two people were coughed on by an unknown man at Nelson Bay. Just before 2pm (Sunday 12 April 2020), a 73-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman were walking along Victoria Parade, Nelson Bay, and as they approached the pedestrian crossing, a white Nissan Navara slowed and pulled up beside them. CAN REAL ESTATE AGENTS STILL OPERATE?
Mrs PL, Nelson Bay Dear Mrs PL,
“How will real estate agents be able to operate through Covid-19?”
IF there is any consistency in our new Covid-19 world, it’s that, as we navigate this new landscape, the goal posts move daily! And while our environment has significantly changed – and continues to evolve daily, Real Estate Agents are able to operate. R and R Property is open for business at both our Stroud and Bulahdelah offices. We take our staff and clients’ health and wellbeing very seriously and to this end are adhering to all State and Federal directives with regards to social distancing, hygiene and client care. While auctions and Open House Inspections are no longer possible, private sales and private inspections are still taking place with all the care and responsibility vendors, buyers and staff expect and deserve. For tenants who may be suffering financial distress brought on by the current situation we are working with every client and landlord to minimise the stress and arrive at solutions that are viable for all. Fuel Prices Hit a Low By Marian SAMPSON
FUEL Prices have hit a low in the Bay with one Service Station retailing E10 for 99 cents per litre. It is three weeks since the first predictions that petrol could drop to $1 a litre in Australia after a price war ignited between Saudi Arabia and Russia amid coronavirus fears. Oil prices plunged over 20% in early March with concerns that the coronavirus outbreak would see the demand at the pump decrease with essential travel restrictions. Normally we see fuel prices go up and down due to a combination of factors, changes in International benchmark prices, fluctuations in the Australian dollar, pricing decisions by fuel wholesalers and retailers and levels of competition. Most motorists would argue that pre school holidays and public holidays usually see a price hike at the bowser; not so far this holiday period. How low we will see fuel drop during the coronavirus crisis remains to be seen.

Retirement in Unusual Times By Julie MCKIMM THE end of term at one local Port Stephens school brought with it the retirement of their much valued and respected Deputy Principal, Mrs Sue Wilson. Mrs Wilson’s career has spanned 44 years in Education, 8 of which have been at Wirreanda Public in Medowie. She has been an integral and much-loved member of Wirreanda’s staff and school community. Her passion for learning and for student wellbeing, coupled with her dynamic style and energy made her a favourite amongst students

and families alike. Principal, Philippa Young, told News Of The Area, “We feel blessed to have

had Sue in our community for the past 8 years; she has truly demonstrated what it means to know, value and care for every student.” “Sue’s influence will continue for many years to come through the young students and teachers she has influenced and shaped during her career. We thank her for her dedication, passion and teaching service and wish her well in retirement. Sue is looking forward to travelling and spending more time with her Grandchildren. Sue also shared a message with the school community; “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the students, staff, parents/carers of Wirreanda for your support and friendship over

the last eight years.” “I have seen students grow and flourish from kindergarten through to Year 6 and I have also had the privilege of getting to know so many families. “My time at Wirreanda has been the most satisfying of my 44 year career in Education and I feel so very grateful to have had the opportunity to work at such an outstanding school.” “From the physical school environment to the innovative classrooms, the Easter Hat Parades, Book Week, sports events and more importantly the students and staff who make this school renowned for its excellence; thank you for the wonderful journey. Wirreanda - I will miss you!” Due to the current restrictions, a proper send-off will have to wait until later in the year.
No, this is not how low we have stooped. This is (allegedly) how low a couple of young people have stooped and they are not at all reflective of our broader community. Stories such as this one can be really distressing, and they are distressing because most of us cannot fathom, in our wildest dreams, how people could be so uncaring, so insensitive and so devoid of humanity as to cough on vulnerable people in times when they are already anxious. I think it is important not to dwell on those seeking attention in repulsive ways and instead focus on the many incredible ways people in our community are supporting each other. Just within my small group of friends and neighbours, I have experienced people sharing recipes, bartering fish for meat, checking in with elderly friends, having Zoom parties instead of the usual weekend catch-ups, and helping each other with kids’ homework (who knew Year 9 maths was so challenging?). I’ve also witnessed locals respecting social distancing measures, but saying hearty greetings to each other as they walk past while exercising, smiling more and generally getting out of their bubbles and realising the many things we have to be grateful for, particularly in an area as spacious and beautiful as Port Stephens. Businesses are being incredibly innovative and coming up with new ways to meet their customers’ needs. Parents are learning how to be tech-savvy via their children. Pets are being adopted. Many are returning to a simpler way of living – planting veggie patches, baking and even buying chooks. In the midst of this pandemic, there is a lot of good out there. I’m not going to get all Louise Hay or Deepak Chopra on you, but the behaviour of a couple of (insert your collective noun of choice – mine will be censored out by the editor) is not representative of our wonderful community. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Local Program a First In NSW By Marian SAMPSON
STUDENTS from Medowie Christian School participated in an unusual program working with three Bachelor of Speech Pathology students, two from the University of Sydney and one from the University of Newcastle, who have spent six weeks at Medowie Christian School for their fourth-year internship. The program is believed to be a first for NSW with the university students embedded in the Prep to Year 12 learning environment for the full six-week internship. The program was instigated by Medowie Christian School’s Director of Literacy and Learning Engagement Kathryn Thorburn, who holds dual qualifications in both speech pathology and education. Ms Thorburn floated the concept to speech pathology program staff from both universities and “they were extremely keen”. Kathryn Thorburn told News Of The Area, ““It is a

common topic of discussion that a collaborative partnership based in schools would make teachers, and speech pathologists have a far greater impact for school age
students. Ms Thorburn said that currently in NSW public schools, speech pathologists were not employed directly, despite this occurring in most
other states. “If school age students receive speech pathology support at schools it will be in a pull out model, where the external speech pathologist
visits the school and works with the student essentially in a clinic setting at school,” Mrs Thorburn said. “Newcastle University also runs a Speech Pathology in Schools program which allows second-year students to provide speech pathology intervention in a clinic room at school.” “My familiarity with the language of both education and speech pathology means I am able to support the translation of assessment information into classroom practice. “Our recent implementation of systematic synthetic phonics using Sounds Write with Decodable readers and Heggerty’s phonemic awareness instruction starting in Prep means our students with language difficulties are being effectively taught just like all of our students and no one is falling through the gaps.” She said the Speech Pathology university students found the placement invaluable. “They understand the dynamics of the classroom, what types of support and interventions are most
effective and they know how to link this to classroom learning,” she said. “Our staff and students had the benefit of extra team members who brought a fresh perspective and a willingness to learn and work as part of our staff team.” The final-year University of Sydney students, Natalie Tsoutsouras and Abe Junho Chung, said they enjoyed the unique opportunity. Abe Junho Chung said: “It was great because at university we learn about everything we need to do but it is just words. “It’s really great to get a realistic view about what it feels like and how a classroom runs.” Amy Barwick, a fourthyear Bachelor of Speech Pathology student at the University of Newcastle said the Covid-19 outbreak also meant the students gained valuable insight into treating children virtually. This program may have been a first in more ways than one but the enthusiasm and results bode well for the experience to be repeated in the future.
Mental health and wellbeing during the
Coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak THE outbreak of the coronavirus COVID-19 has impacted people in varying ways on an international scale. It is understandable that during times like this, people may be feeling afraid, worried, anxious and overwhelmed by the constantly changing alerts and media coverage regarding the spread of the virus. While it is important to stay informed, the following are some mental health and wellbeing tips and strategies from Lifeline, to continue looking after ourselves and each other during these difficult times.
Manage your exposure to media coverage as this can
increase feelings of fear and anxiety. Be mindful of sources of information and ensure you are accessing good quality and accurate information.
Follow a “calm yet cautious” approach – do your best to
remain calm and be mindful not to contribute to the widespread panic that can hinder efforts to positively manage the outbreak. Ensure you are following directives issued by the government, medical advice and observe good hygiene habits.
Show compassion and kindness to one another –
these times of fear, isolation (both physical and social) and uncertainty
Thursday, 16 April, 2020
are when it is most important that we strengthen our sense of community by connecting with and supporting each other. Remind ourselves that we can manage this much better together in solidarity, and that COVID-19 doesn’t discriminate – it can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, nationality or ethnicity.
Actively manage your wellbeing by maintaining routines where possible, connect with family and friends (even if not in person), staying physically active, eating nutritious foods and seeking additional support by contacting Lifeline or further professional support as required.
Strategies to cope with social distancing, self-isolation or
quarantine Going into a period of social distancing, self-isolation or quarantine may feel daunting or overwhelming, and can contribute to feelings of helplessness and fear. In addition to the above, we encourage the following; ● Perspective – try to see this time as unique and different, not necessarily bad, even if it something you didn’t necessarily choose ● Connection – think of creative ways to stay connected with others, including social media, email and phone ● Be generous to others – giving to others in times of need not only helps
the recipient, it enhances your wellbeing too. Is there a way to help others around you? ● Stay connected with your values. Don’t let fear or anxiety drive your interactions with others. We are all in this together! ● Daily routine – create a routine that prioritises things you enjoy and even things you have been meaning to do but haven’t had enough time. Read that book, watch that show, take up that new hobby. ● Try to see this as a new and unusual period that might even have some benefits. ● Limit your exposure to news and media. Perhaps choose specific times of day when you will get updates, and ensure they are from reputable and reliable sources.
Staying connected through the
COVID-19 crisis Research after the SARS pandemic in Hong Kong in 2008, provides evidence of the significance of connection through epidemics. It found that residents in Hong Kong experienced increased social connectedness, which offset the negative mental health impacts of the pandemic. As connection is so important during this time, here are some tips on staying connected to others during this time. Remember – we are all in this together. ● If there is someone you think
NewsOfTheArea.com.au
may struggle through social isolation, it is important to reach out to them and let them know you care: ● Call them to check on their welfare ● Send an email ● Leave a note under their door ● Don’t underestimate the power you have to offer hope to another person. ● We encourage people to get creative with how they interact, here are some ways to stay connected if self-isolating: ● Set up a gratitude tree – where every member posts a message or sends a text to other members to share something they are grateful for. ● Find a buddy, or group of, to set daily challenges with. These could include a healthy habit, a mindful practice, a creative pursuit. Be sure to encourage and check in daily to stay motivated. ● Set dates and times to watch the same TV shows/movies with someone and message each other your thoughts along the way… kind of like Goggle Box but you're not sharing the couch! ● If your local community has one, join its social media group! This will keep you up to date with what’s going on directly around you. It may also include ways you can perhaps reach out and connect with someone less fortunate than you and ways to assist them.

Tourists kept distance By Mitch LEES
RESIDENTS and authorities are breathing easy after tourists have heeded their calls to stay away from the Port Stephens region over the Easter holiday break. Usually bustling with visitors from around Australia and abroad the
Tomaree Peninsula was a ghost town compared to this time last year. The Port Stephens Tourist Information Centre reported that “there were no holiday bookings in line with the current Public Health Orders on COVID-19 and the centre had experienced minimal traffic with only essential
travellers enquiring at this time.” Local cafe owner Lyle Goodman said that while the holiday trade was nonexistent, locals were still out and about exercising and grabbing their takeaway coffees. “The mad rush isn’t on but the locals are still supporting
business,” said Mr Goodman. “It’s got a real sense of calm and community at the moment, businesses rely on tourism and they’ll be back, the town just feels balanced at a time like this.” Even though the streets have been empty, local corelords are still filling the ocean as waveriders attempt to safely dominate the Easter
swells. Trent Hanson, surfer and troopcarrier enthusiast said “there was a fairly busy lineup at Box Beach but most surfers were staying well away from each other and the portal.” As the curve continues to flatten in Australia, a NSW Health statement released on Easter Monday warned that now is not the time to be complacent for communities like Port Stephens.
“The daily rate of increase in COVID-19 cases has fallen over the past fortnight, with the rate of increase in the past 24 hours being less than 1%, compared with 9% observed in the 24 hours a fortnight ago,” said the statement. “This is welcome news but there is still a long way to go before restrictions are lifted, now is the time we need people to be vigilant and stay the course.”
Riley Jewell, Port Stephens Power Football, can’t wait to get back on the playing field

q Ghost Town: The main drag of Nelson Bay CBD was eerily quiet on Easter Saturday.
We have seen the postponement of most winter sports, including Soccer, Netball, Australian Rules Football, Rugby Union, Rugby League and countless others. Whilst the long-term effects are yet to be felt, short-term effects are already spreading not only to administrators but to our children. Many local children live and breathe their winter sports, playing both days

on the weekends and training up to four times per week, watching anything sport related in between. Ryley Jewell from Port Stephens Power Australian Football Club told News Of The Area, “I’m missing being at footy and kicking a footy with my mates.” “I just wish this stupid corona virus would go away so we can start playing soon.” Parents and children are understanding the importance of social distancing so are looking for options at home to
keep active, away from devices and sane during this uncertain time we are experiencing. Some in the area are lucky enough to have large backyards with football goals and obstacle courses, those with smaller yards are looking toward more fine motor skills requiring less space and going on regular walks and jogs to keep their fitness up. With the future of this season unknown, every bit of home training counts for something.
