By Heather SHARP
SIBLING duo Caesar and Scarlett Lewis have once again won over the judges at the Quilt NSW, Sydney Quilt Show. Caesar an 8 year old in Year 3 at Wirreanda Public School won first prize in Junior Member A Up to Year 6. His quilt, titled Monster Truck, was an original design and won Caesar fabric, a book, and a gift voucher. News Of The Area spoke with Caesar and asked him what his inspiration was. He said, “I thought of doing something with wheels and I said let’s do a monster truck.” “We got one of my monster truck toys from my bedroom” “I drew a big monster truck out on paper and then we stitched the fabric on to the paper and then we cut it out in the right shape.” “The wheels are made from rectangles sewn together to make it look like a real wheel” “My next project is a stormy weather theme”

Already thinking ahead to next year’s competition, Scarlett told News Of The Area, “Next year I want to do the Sydney Opera House.” What is the sibling rivalry like in their household? It is clear to see that they are fiercely competitive with each other and both want to win that top prize. Both are also incredibly supportive and proud of each other’s achievements.

Grants’ Program to assist Community
PORT Stephens community groups and individuals will receive more than $136,000 for projects that boost community wellbeing as part of Council’s 2019 Grants program. At the last Council meeting, Council approved funding assistance across its five Grant programs — community, environmental, heritage, cultural and Aboriginal projects. Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says these funds will go towards valuable community projects and services. “It’s a bit like Christmas in July! Each year, we help to fund many deserving groups and individuals who go on to make great contributions to Port Stephens,” Mayor Palmer said. “This year, our successful projects include an Indigenous Surf Safety Awareness program, funding to improve koala habitats and a range of community events to create a more vibrant Port Stephens. “Our annual Grants are a great way to give back to the community. Grants have a ripple effect — a small amount can get an idea off the ground, boost an ongoing initiative, attract other funding sources and have a positive impact on

Soldiers Point Public School principal Simon Parson is proud to be a recipient of the Aboriginal Projects fund for the Teach us Gathang project. “This Grant will enable up to 30 students of Soldiers Point Public School to develop a greater sense of belonging and pride in their Aboriginal culture. “Students will have the opportunity to learn about Aboriginal culture, including dreamtime, artefacts and the Gathang language. “This is an exciting project which will be expanded in the future to every student at the school through the development of a unit of
work highlighting the cultural significance of Soldiers Point,” he said. Jeanette Antrum from Seaside Singers says her group are pleased to be Cultural Projects grant recipients this year. “This funding will allow us to continue what we started last year in promoting Port Stephens as a cultural destination. “The Choral Festival will attract eight choirs from the Hunter region and one international choir — the Kirara Chorus from Tatyama in Japan. It will be the core entertainment of a wider Tomaree Arts Festival over the weekend of 25 to 27 October,” Ms Antrum said.

Support mental health initiative jupiter
By Marian SAMPSON
JUPITER is the new service offering free mental health services to Port Stephens youth. The activities of the service has already attracted the support of the NSW Department of Health and PHN the Primary Health Network, which has commissioned a new access and referral service to improve and increase the levels of support for patients eligible to receive funded primary mental health care services. The group launched a fundraising lunch at Bannisters, Port Stephens which is being hailed a success. Locals gathered at the Rick Stein restaurant to enjoy a decadent lunch and to raise funds to support the youth charity. The day’s Master of Ceremonies, was the witty Mel Turner of Moonshadow TQC Cruises.

The services of Jupiter are currently delivered in rooms within the Tomaree Library building and the group hopes to increase their reach across the LGA. Geoffrey Basser, Vice President of COPSY told News Of The Area, “The combination of the cause, the environment, the food, the service and the entertainment , it was as so many people commented, ten out of ten. “This being one of the major events to be
conducted annually by a number of jupiter’s Charity Partners as the major community priority, is to sustain Jupiter into the future,” he said. The service is not for crisis, and anyone in crisis or they feel that someone they know is in crisis they are urged to call the mental health line on 1800 011 511 or Lifeline on 13 11 14. Should I keep renting or buy?
Dear Ms KR,
HI Denise, I’ve been renting since I sold my home a few months ago. It seems to be going well. Should I keep renting or look to buy?
Rent or buy? This age-old question is usually accompanied by thoughts of why pay out hundreds, maybe even thousands of rent dollars each month, versus the expense that goes with buying and owning a home. So, what to do? Renting frees up your savings to spend or invest elsewhere and allows you to live a more flexible life, even moving from place to place at will. On the flip side, you are vulnerable to rent rises and unexpected moves if your landlord decides to sell. Home ownership can be expensive and those costs certainly don’t stop with the purchase, but ownership provides you with a valuable asset that will appreciate over time. Buying forces you to budget and save, rather than spending your savings perhaps unwisely. And you’ll have equity you can access for other uses such as renovating, diversified investment and travel. Everyone’s circumstances and goals are different. There are many factors to consider and either situation is not for everyone. Do your sums and seek expert advice. Hope this helps Denise

Fashion Fun for Probus Ladies By Marian SAMPSON
THE Nelson Bay Ladies Probus Club members get up to a variety of fun activities. At a recent meeting they heard Denise Weir's recitation of the poem "Abu Ben Adhem". Jill Stephenson of the Nelson Bay Ladies Probus Club told News Of The Area, “We celebrated Denise’s birthday finishing off the scrumptious cake, Denise had made for her own Big O Birthday.” The celebrations were
READING:
followed by a fun filled fashion parade where members glammed up and strutted their stuff in fashions provided by Noni B. Evelyn Swinburn, is the clubs Guest Speaker Officer, and was MC and organiser of the event. “Bev Marrott was stunning in a black dress with striking sleeves. Margaret Donnella was glamourous in black-andwhite. “Kathleen Wright, at 92
years of age, had the entire room in stitches as she "strutted-her-stuff" it was hilarious and she was gorgeous in the various outfits. Lina Lavella was simply beautiful in a terracotta faux suede matching skirt and jacket. Noni B supported the event providing not only the fashions and accessories but prizes for the raffles and the ladies were delighted with the discount vouchers they received.
2 Chronicles 7: 14 HEARER OF PRAYER “If my people, who are called by My Name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” Blessings from Lynne Miles
WHEN you say ‘a funny mask’ I get a few competing images. If you are referring to a masquerade mask, I guess she would look a bit odd wandering down the sleepy streets of Tea Gardens like an extra out of Eyes Wide Shut. I also doubt this type of mask would keep the germs away. It may even encourage them. A balaclava may also involve the wrong sort of attention, especially if she has to buy fuel or do the banking. Is she carrying a strangled chook in one hand? In this case she may be preparing for some good old-fashioned chicken soup, or she may be wearing a ritual mask. Keep away from her and call the cops if she starts hanging around with neo pagans and watching The Wicker Man. You can never be too careful, Ms KR. If, however, she is wearing what is sometimes referred to as a surgical or respiratory mask, I think she’s a smart woman. There have been studies that suggest, when teamed with OCD-level handwashing, that you will be less likely to catch something nasty. Although it may feel as though you are seated next to a madwoman, the flu is a truly terrible thing to endure. The last time I had the flu I was so delirious that I wrote a novel in my head and when I was taken to hospital I thought that perhaps the GP hovering over me was an angel. I felt so confused that I was more than happy for him to take me (in a Take Me to Church way, Ms KR). Lots of people in large cities wear surgical masks and I think it may become more popular in regional areas. Of course the other option is a jab in the arm and there are many arguments and counter-arguments that I do not have room to elaborate on here. Let her be. Carpe diem, Jasminda.
