EVEN after this week’s showers, Hunter Water has declared Level 1 water restrictions across the Lower Hunter from this week, helping to conserve the region’s precious drinking water supplies. The severe drought affecting NSW has had a significant impact on dam levels, prompting the introduction of water restrictions in this region for the first time in 25 years. Hunter Water’s Acting CEO Graham Wood encouraged the community
to follow the water restrictions and continue to ‘Love Water’. “It’s more important than ever that we all play our part and save water, particularly as we head into the warmer months. “Level 1 water restrictions apply across our entire region, meaning outdoor watering is only permitted before 10am and after 4pm and all hoses must have a trigger nozzle. The use of sprinklers is no longer

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from readers throughout the circulation area of our FOUR News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. SEND your concerns to Jasminda care of media@newsofthearea.com. au and include your title, initials and suburb.
Dear Jasminda,
I have a raft of symptoms including dizziness, hot flashes, heart palpitations, tingling sensations and shortness of breath. I went to my GP and he said I am probably having a funny turn or going through perimenopause. It doesn’t feel very funny.
APPRAISAL OR VALUATION
“Is there a difference between an appraisal and a valuation?” YES, there is. Appraisals are conducted by Licensed Real Estate Agents, usually when a property owner is considering selling and are designed to see where the property sits within the current market in view of the Agent presenting vendors with a realistic price-guide. Age, structure, amenities, presentation, location, the sale price of comparable properties and price guides of current comparable listings are all considered. Appraisals have no legal standing, are nonbinding, should be obligation free and are usually cost-free to the vendor. A valuation, however, is a formal process conducted by a qualified valuer when a definitive value is required such as when a buyer is seeking a mortgage to assist in purchasing the property; to provide finance when an owner borrows against the property for other uses; establishing the value of a deceased estate and for resolving disputes. Even if you’re a property owner who’s not thinking of selling or leasing, it’s important to know your property’s value for insurance purposes alone. After all, it’s probably your most important asset. The R & R Team are skilled property appraisers and our wealth of local knowledge means, with us, your property appraisal is in safe hands.

RUOK Day By Heather SHARP THE annual RUOK Day has again been observed this past Thursday, 12 September. The RUOK Day has as its motto: A conversation could change a life. Started by Gavin Larkin OAM in 2009 in remembrance of his father’s suicide, the aim of the day is to encourage conversations between colleagues and friends about mental health. Lifeline reports that death by suicide is the leading cause of death for people aged 15 and 44. In Australia, current suicide statistics are around 12.9 per 100 000.
Ms Meryl Swanson, Member for Paterson said in a statement, “Construction workers are more than twice as likely to take their own life than any other people in Australia, and are six times as likely to die by suicide than through a workplace accident.” “Today with my colleagues at Parliament House I joined over 550 construction, mining and energy sites around Australia flying the flag for suicide prevention.” Medowie’s Active Diner supported the day by having on sale RUOK cupcakes made exclusively by Cupcake Espresso. Ms Amanda Bull told News Of The Area, “Our cupcakes were really popular, more than

Dear Mrs KD, Boy, do I know those sensations. They happen to me whenever I watch Dave Le’aupepe gyrate to Let Me Down Easy. It’s uncanny. Seriously, though, you have gone to a doctor describing what you think is a medical emergency and they have downplayed it by using a term that doesn’t adequately describe your suffering. A funny turn gives off casual and comical connotations. It sounds like what you’d experience after going on The Rotor at Luna Park, or drinking a couple of glasses of champagne on a whale watch cruise. Type your symptoms into Google, though, and it’s a different story – you could have anything from sinusitis to Supraventricular tachycardia. Those conditions don’t sound funny at all. The problem with ‘a funny turn’ diagnosis is it is too understated. It doesn’t go anywhere near explaining the vertiginous rocking, overheating, breathing difficulties and pins and needles you describe. The same with term perimenopause, which has an almost exotic sound to it: Peri: a Spanish-inspired feast; men: yes, please; o-pause: take a little rest. No, what you describe is more like a ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ breakdown accompanied by self-combustion. You are literally in the midst of your own climate change wars. Mrs KD, if these symptoms continue, perhaps seek out a second or third opinion. After all, you know your body better than anyone else and it seems to be giving you a particularly rough time at the moment. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

By Heather SHARP
By Heather SHARP TEDX TALKS and presentations have become famous the world over. The mission of TEDX is to spread ideas in local communities. TEDX talks are organised independently by those who seek to promote conversations and share ideas. TED which stands for Technology, Entertainment, and Design began in 1984. Medowie Christian School hosted their own TEDX Youth Talk on Friday, 13 September. Two year 9 students, Declan Aislabie and Skye McHugh, both 14 years old were among those selected to present their ideas. Declan told News of The Area, “My topic looks at the difference between a social media influencer and a leader.” “It is a big issue in today’s world as the majority of our lives is displayed in these platforms.” Skye told News Of The Area, “I am talking about the psycho-dynamics of leadership.” “Leadership is all about our personality, and we don’t have to change to fit into a stereotype.”
Presenting the keynote on the day was Mr Declan Stacey, a World Cup, World Series and Commonwealth Games medalist in diving. Declan is now focussed on qualifying for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Also presenting was James Evans, a year 10 student looking at the importance of permaculture on families and the wider community, encouraging its use. Ms Kupakwashe Matangira from Hunter Christian School spoke about racism in Australia. A statement issued by Medowie Christian School also said that Ms Matangira has represented Australia on a Young Diplomat’s Tour to Europe with the United Nations Youth of Australia, won the 2016 Race Discrimination Commissioner’s Prize, represented NSW at a national elite debating forum, and was in the national grandfinals of a public speaking competition She also represented her electorate of Maitland at Junior Parliament in 2016 and won the 2018 Tim Crakenthorp Social Justice Prize.
SHOWCASING the talents of the local public schools, last week saw Irrawang High School and its feeder primary schools perform a wide range of creative and performing arts. An extravaganza of local schools talent had the audience enthralled at the performances. From drama to drums to choirs and solo singers the schools demonstrated their diverse talents. In front of a full house over two nights, Irrawang High School hosted the primary schools with students singing, dancing, drumming, playing music, and performing skits. Mr Paul Baxter, Principal of Irrawang High School told News Of The Area, “Irrawang hosts Showcase for collaboration with the four partner primary schools, displaying fantastic work of students and teachers.” Irrawang Public School Principal, Ms Stacy Mathieson said to News Of The Area, “What a night!” “Showcase once again provides our students with a fabulous avenue to shine and the chance for our primary students to see firsthand the amazing creative and performing arts opportunities that lay ahead for them at Irrawang High.” During the evening, some old favourites were brought out, familiar to
the kids from the 1980s such as the song, Wash Your Face With Orange Juice which had audience members toe-tapping along. Councillor for Port Stephens, Mr Giacomo Arnott said to News Of The Area, “Our local schools put a lot of time and energy into promoting the creative and performing arts, and Showcase is the premiere event in Raymond Terrace to show off the incredible talent of our young people.” “It also adds a cultural event to our area’s calendar. I strongly encourage members of the public to come along next time and enjoy the show.” “The final performance, with all of the students, always has so much energy and passion, and this year was no different. Well done to all of the schools, students and staff involved in such a successful show.” Ms Trish Bowen, Director of Education Leadership said that, “Showcasing talent of our students and giving them opportunities to show success is important.” Pre-show, the principals and school supporters enjoyed the hospitality of year 11 students who treated guests to a variety of gourmet creations. With bruschetta, punch, meringues, pork meatballs, and other treats served up, VIP guests were left satisfied before the Showcase had begun.
