SOUTH Tomaree Community Association Inc. are calling for Council to retain and maintain the public amenities block in Ocean Avenue. Current plans are for the toilets to be demolished once the Robinson Reserve upgrade takes place. Roz Scoles of the South Tomaree Community Association told News Of The Area, “Currently we have 482 signatures on our petition and we are still collecting signatures.” The South Tomaree Community Association Inc. fully support the Robinson Reserve upgrade. “The reason we are

collecting signatures is because the community feel we need more public toilets not less,” she said. When the Robinson Reserve upgrade takes place there will be 4 new toilets built. The Association believes that a majority of the community want to keep the asset used by the 3846 local residents, and constant influx of tourists sees keeping a perfectly good and very used toilet block a good idea. The toilet block in question services Birubi Point Beach, Iris Moore Reserve, Tomaree National Park Walkway and the visitors to the historic cemetery.

locals and tourists will want to live, work, play and stay. The plan was co-funded by the NSW Government and was placed on public exhibition for community feedback in February this year. The decision to endorse the final plan was made at a community Council meeting in Nelson Bay as part of celebrations for the upcoming Local Government Week. Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says this is another step in the right direction for Nelson Bay. “Nelson Bay is a thriving place that is leaping forward into its next chapter — that’s the vision this plan has laid out,” Mayor Palmer said. “What we’re talking about is more street trees in the town

Have you been diagnosed with

centre and better connections to the foreshore and Tomaree National Park. We also want to create a town centre that is people-friendly for walkers and cyclists, as well as more quality spaces for locals and tourists to enjoy year-round, in turn supporting local business and growing employment opportunities for our region.” Mayor Palmer says more than 60 submissions were received in response to the Public Domain Plan, which were overwhelmingly positive. “The majority of community feedback we received was very supportive of the plan — in particular, people liked the idea of a greener, more beautiful town centre that’s easier to navigate for both locals and tourists. “Our next challenge is to

continue to do whatever we can to fund implementation of the plan. The NSW Government has been a huge support and we’ll continue to advocate for more for Nelson

Bay. We’ll also look at allocating funding as part of our strategy to fast-track priority projects for Port Stephens,” Mayor Palmer said.

Back from the Big Red Bash TANILBA’S Helen Smith is back from her second ‘Big Red Bash’ at Birdsville. She journeyed there with her sister Patricia where the dynamic duo promoted Patricia’s books which are photographic records of the annual event, the outback and the people who live there. The 10 000 patrons of the ‘Big Red Bash’ also inject much needed cash into the drought ravaged communities as Helen said, “It’s not just Birdsville that benefits.”

“Along the way people stop off at other remote villages and spend money on accommodation, meals and fuel,” she added. “This helps to keep these towns afloat during these difficult times.” Going on holidays out west is a great way to help the drought affected rural areas. This will augment our local Lions Clubs’ initiatives. The combined Tilligerry / Medowie effort saw some 44 truck loads of hay dispersed amongst needy farmers. Food and essential items

PBL Back In Term 3

THE start of Term 3 sees the return of the PBL (Positive Behaviour and Learning) awards presented to students of local participating schools. Each Thursday evening, along with raffles and

accompanied by a school teacher or principal to receive the award. Centre Manager and Marketing Manager Ms Colleen Mulholland-Ruiz told News Of The Area, “Seeing the look on the parents’ and other family members’ faces

when their student gets an award is so rewarding for us at MarketPlace.” “The look of pride on their faces reinforces our decision to run the PBL awards in public each week.” This week’s PBL award recipients include: Charlie Williams, Grahamstown Public School: Charlie demonstrated mature skills when working with

the teachers to support the recent public speaking and debating events. Huxley Rowe, Irrawang High School: Nominated for displaying outstanding customer service skills at the last CPA fundraising Bunnings BBQ. Tristian Ward, Medowie Public School: For giving up his own time and patiently trying to teach someone

Residents Local Lions Contributing to Say Save Community Land By Marian SAMPSON

By Marian SAMPSON

THE Crown Land in Shoal Bay referred to as Lot 424 is still a matter for contention. It is a shady piece of public land at Little Beach which is inhabited by a resident koala and has koala feed trees. It is understood that Council are working towards amalgamating this parcel of public land into Halifax Holiday Park. Residents are concerned about the proposed changes which will fall under Councils plans of management if adopted. Carmel Foster, Council’s Corporate Services Manager spoke with News Of The Area about Lot 424. “Council has completed the draft plans of management for Halifax and Shoal Bay holiday parks. “ These plans are now on public exhibition. “We’ll also be holding two public meetings for each park over the coming months,” she said. Community consultations on the Halifax Draft Plan of Management will take place in the Elizabeth Waring Function Room, at 4981 Nelson Bay Road, Nelson Bay NSW 2315 at 6.00 pmTuesday 6 August 2019 and at 11am on Saturday 10 August. These sessions will be immediately followed by the community consultations on the Shoal Bay Draft Plan of Management at 7.30 pm- Tuesday 6 August 2019 and 12.30pm on Saturday 10 August. The community is concerned that if these plans of management are adopted that Little Beach will lose its shady oasis and the only shade at the beach, while further reducing koala habitat and destroying known koala home ranges in the region. Residents are urging the community to make their wishes for Lot 424 known. Councils options are to either commercialize Lot 424 by developing it into Halifax Holiday Park, Leave GOL100 Lot 424 as an important community amenity, tourist attraction, and wildlife habitat and corridor and request that the State Government respect local community wishes and reGazette Lot 424 for “Public Recreation”.

Shining A Spotlight on Education Hawk Lead-In

Fighter aircraft

By Heather SHARP

MARKETPLACE Raymond Terrace continues to support local schools through its weekly student awards program, PBL. Education Week is also a focus and opportunity to showcase the wonderful local schools. From Monday 6 to Friday 10 August, schools will showcase their talented students to the general public. Supporting the schools will be MarketPlace Raymond Terrace. The popular shopping centre sponsors the buses for all the school children who perform during Education Week. News Of The Area spoke with Centre Manager and Marketing Manager, Ms Colleen Mulholland-Ruiz who said, “What we find is that not everyone can come along to Education Week in the schools, so we try to showcase the talented student here in the Centre.” “When the children do the performances here, it is an opportunity for the wider public to see it also.”

RAAF Base Williamtown Hawk Lead-In Fighter aircraft from Number 76 Squadron (76SQN) returned to the Salt Ash Air Weapons Range (SAAWR) to conduct air-tosurface weapons training for aircrew from Monday, 22 July 2019. 76SQN has scheduled four weeks of SAAWR operations from 22 July through to Friday, 16 August. The aircraft will use the range on weekdays only. PC-9 aircraft from Number 4 Squadron (4SQN) will conduct essential training at SAAWR from Monday, 19, to Friday, 30 August, and during the week of Monday, 14, to Friday, 18 October. 4SQN supports essential Joint Terminal Attack training for Army. Number 2 Operational Conversion Unit (2OCU) F/A18 Classic Hornet aircraft will also use the range for the final time during the week commencing 14 October. Commander Air Combat Group, Air Commodore (AIRCDRE) Tony Grady said residents living in East Medowie, Salt Ash and Lemon

q Colleen Mulholland-Ruiz (centre) with her Centre Management team Stewart Murrell (left) and Laura Carrol (right) dressed up for last week’s PBL awards. “Mums and Dads don’t always get the opportunity to see what their children are doing in the schools, the families get so excited to see their children performing.” “This year, we have bands, dancing groups, drama, singing, and storytelling.” “It can bring the school children out of their comfort zone by performing in public and help them grow as well.” “On the last day Irrawang High School students showcase the arts” When asked why MarketPlace is so committed

to showcasing education, Ms Mulholland-Ruiz quotes the well known song lyrics, “The children are our future; teach them well and let them lead the way.” “Education is not just in the school, it’s in the community and at home.” “It is important for the community to support children” Ms Mulholland-Ruiz “We didn’t realise the effect the impact of the weekly PBL awards would have on the children and their families.” “I have always been really

passionate about education” Marketplace will be celebrating their 21st birthday this November. “We are proud to be part of the community on all levels.” “We have a strong partnership with our sporting clubs, schools, and services.” “And, in return the community supports us as well by shopping locally, therefore we are able to give back to the community.” A full list of Education Week activities can be found at: https://www.facebook.com/ marketplaceraymondterrace/

Tree Passage can expect the range to be used consistently throughout this period. “Air Combat Group units will always attempt to minimise their use of the range, and once aircrew proficiency has been attained the unit will move onto the next stage of their course,’’ he said. “Air Force has a responsibility to ensure personnel are ready and able to deploy at short notice and this involves necessary air-tosurface weapons training at SAAWR.” AIRCDRE Grady said every effort was made to minimise any inconvenience to residents during SAAWR training and advised the range schedule could change at short notice due to weather or operational considerations. Members of the community seeking further information are invited to call 1800 033 200, or refer to https://www.airforce.gov.au/ operations/flying-operations, or https://aircraftnoisemap. airforce.gov.au/assets/site. html?806#base/1.

RENT OR BUY?

“Hi Denise, I’ve been renting since I sold my home a few months ago. It seems to be going well. Should I keep renting or look to buy?” RENT OR BUY? This age-old question is usually accompanied by thoughts of why pay out hundreds, maybe even thousands of rent dollars each month, versus the expense that goes with buying and owning a home. So, what to do? Renting frees up your savings to spend or invest elsewhere and allows you to live a more flexible life, even moving from place to place at will. On the flip side, you are vulnerable to rent rises and unexpected moves if your landlord decides to sell. Home ownership can be expensive and those costs certainly don’t stop with the purchase, but ownership provides you with a valuable asset that will appreciate over time. Buying forces you to budget and save, rather than spending your savings perhaps unwisely. And you’ll have equity you can access for other uses such as renovating, diversified investment and travel. Everyone’s circumstances and goals are different. There are many factors to consider and either situation is not for everyone. Do your sums and seek expert advice.” Hope this helps Denise

Standing up for a better way! or forms an opinion based on gossip and makes reckless comments, thus feeding the destructive virus. If someone dares call out the truth and offer a reasoned argument or explanation, they are also attacked, harassed and maybe even blocked. During the state and federal elections, candidates from all parties were subjected to attacks from typing tyrants, trolling their victims to destroy their credibility. It became newsworthy because high profile targets were able to fightback. But what of the lesser known. How do they fight back? In most cases they suffer, some so bad they take their own lives. Others close down their longstanding business like the family run Dog Pound at Gloucester. Others just pack up and leave. Sometimes, it is not misguided rants but orchestrated malicious, smear campaign against an individual or organisation; or a means to a political or philosophical agenda. Often they are well financed and grasp every

OPINION

Dear News Of The Area “STICKS and Stones will break my bones but names will never hurt me!” is a childhood proverb that does not appear to exist within social media. Since the advent of social media, self-posting of articles of hateful, malicious and nasty speech has become the tool of faceless bullies to do harm. Harm to honourable reputation. Harm to families. Harm to business. More importantly harm to the caring, encouraging and nurturing fabric of society. Such faceless vile is not new. In times past, the occasional poisonous pen letter dropped into a letterbox was known about by only a few. Greater harm occurs today because the malice is spread quickly, like an aggressive unseen virus across the worldwide web. Once started, it is almost impossible to stop. opportunity to attack people rather than debate the issue. Or worse, deliberately distort the facts to create mischief! The perpetrators act like cowards and we, as a caring society, need to strike back. We must overcome hatred and stand up for a better way. We must call out bullying and malicious gossip for what it is – degrading, antisocial behaviour that tears at the caring heart of society. A publishers (in the eyes of the law, is anyone who produces a social media page for comment) need to take responsibility for the cruel, damaging and malicious comments they allow to be posted. Recent court judgements have come down heavy upon reckless publications and irresponsible social media posts, likes and comments. We need to use social media to care, nurture and build relationships, which is vital for community and our own individual wellbeing. Think before posting; is it fact? Is it encouraging? Is it mean spirited? Is it necessary? Cr Len Roberts Tea Gardens

“The Lord has established His throne in the heavens, and His sovereignty rules over all.”

I’ve been looking after a friend’s cat and it has gone missing. She’s on her honeymoon and I really don’t want to call and ruin things for her. On the other hand, I feel like maybe she would have some ideas on where the cat has gone. Any suggestions? Frantic Mrs KL, Salamander Bay. OH dear Lord, Mrs KL. This is a disaster. A real dilemma. A true conundrum. An ethical quagmire. A missing-in-action, potential hostage situation. My heart is palpitating and my fingers are tingling with anticipation at what my warped mind will come up with. Or maybe I’m having a heart attack. I’m not sure. You know, there are a few options for people who have pets. Firstly, you can reconcile yourself to the fact that you’re not going to have a decent holiday for the next 16-odd years. You can bet as soon as you’re a sip into your first Pina Colada at a Couple’s Retreat, trying to get your mojo back (that you lost cleaning kitty litter trays and being interrupted – coitus interruptus to be specific – by a cat coughing up a hair ball on your bed) that your pet minder will call with a pet emergency such as the one you are now experiencing. It is far better to just stay at home with Petunia the Burmese and be a crazy cat couple (which has a nice alliterative ring to it, if nothing else). If that is just too depressing, you can book your beloved into a cattery, which is a bit like a nunnery, only a lot louder. These places are equipped to manage escape artists with high walls and fields of Catnip which will have your kitty drooling and purring like all get out. The third option, the one your cheapskate friend decided on, is to hand over the dear little fluff ball to someone who hasn’t participated in the requisite Cat Absconder unit which is a compulsory component of the Certificate IV in Lawful Pet Custody course. It includes cat absconder simulation training – a bit like Grand Theft Auto with kibble spills, shredded lounges, regurgitated lizards and tomcatting hazards. You should not look after someone else’s cat without it. You are not to blame in this instance, Mrs KL. Cats wander. In fact, they wander into the bush at night and kill what remains of our ever-diminishing fauna species. Hopefully the wayward lush will return before your friend. If not, there’s plenty of replacements at the RSPCA abandoned by owners who took the fourth and final option. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

BOX Beach at Shoal Bay has long been a testing ground for the watermen of Port Stephens and this weekend will be no different with the annual Burton Toyota King of the Box surfing competition set to run. This year the event has special significance with the recent passing of one of Box Beach’s original locals in Andrew ‘Tubeseeker’ Lilly who

helped pioneer the heavy left-hand wedge. Competition will be set to run on Saturday and Sunday with a paddle out on Saturday morning at 6:45am that all locals and competitors are welcomed to attend to farewell Andrew. Event director Terry McKenna, who shared a warm friendship and many waves with Andrew, said that the event was about showcasing grassroots

surfing and the uniqueness of Box Beach to the community. “The wave itself is a real spectacle,” said Mr McKenna. “It breaks close to shore with tons of power that allows for heavy tube rides and high performance surfing,” “Andrew was a master tuberider out there and we have really lost a legend of this area.” There will be four divisions in open men,

could be on it’s way for this weekend,” said Mr McKenna. “It would be a fitting send-off to celebrate Andrew’s life and his contribution to surfing.” All event information and running times can be found at https:// www.facebook.com/ TheKINGoftheBOX.

The event will culminate with an exhibition by photographer Robbie O’Brien of local surfing over the decades on Saturday night at the Shoal Bay Country Club. The Port Stephens community is encouraged to attend both the exhibition and surfing event with forecasts looking favourable for some epic conditions.

Katie & Feff show at Tilligerry RSL on Friday 2 August CAN she sing? Oh yeah! Can he play? You betcha! Katie & Feff are the acoustic sensation that your ears have been begging you for. With over 20 years industry experience between them Katie & Feff are certainly not new to the world of entertainment. The Katie & Feff show was born when these two combined forces with the same passion to create an act that was purely made of “real” music and instrumentation. You won’t catch them playing with any artificial sounds, Katie & Feff are 100% organic, real, easy listening, toe tapping & party entertainment. If you want to get up and dance they have the groove to make you move. If you would prefer a quiet beer and some smooth acoustic tunes to finish of your Sunday afternoon they have you covered! Katie & Feff are as diverse and eclectic as

the music they play. With a combination of male and female vocals coupled with warm acoustic guitar, stomp and percussion Katie & Feff

FOR a nation as sports-mad as Australia, it is surprising that there are some sports that still fly under the radar. Darts is one such sport. Although commonly seen played in pubs around the country by amateurs, the reality of professional darts is that it is played by skilled sportspeople. The profile of darts as a serious sport continues to grow and many games are now televised in the way traditional sports like cricket, tennis, and rugby league are. News Of The Area interviewed Raymond Terrace Bowling Club Jets team member, Mr Chris Fisher, to discuss their team’s recent success.
